Hello Atlanta! We live in the greatest country on Earth! The land of the free and the home of the brave(s)! Whether you plan on enjoying a barbecue with friends or snuggling up with a loved one during the fireworks at Centennial Olympic Park, take a moment to remember what this holiday is all about. It took guts for the young Continental Congress of 1776 to stand united in their cause and vocalize their opposition. This lesson is more important today than ever before for our community. We don’t have complete equality yet, but even in Atlanta we can find our voice. And we can be heard. In this issue, Fenuxe celebrates America. We hope as you celebrate your freedom this Independence Day you will reflect on what you have, not what you lack. Happy Independence Day. See you in two weeks! William Duffee-Braun Editor-In-Chief

JOE soLMonese THE FENUXE INTERVIEW

anyone can speak about the state of LGBT America, it’s Joe Solmonese. The Massachusetts native is President of the Human Rights Campaign—the largest LGBT advocacy group in the country. Solmonese sits down with Fenuxe to talk about the latest news on our most important issues, which issues get overlooked, why Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is finally close to repeal, his proudest day as HRC President and the future of LGBT rights in America. 10

FENUXEMAGAZINE

Fenuxe: Which American gay rights issue do you think is the number one priority right now? Joe Solmonese: We have a number of legislative priorities

right now, the most immediate being repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which has passed in the House and is facing the full Senate shortly. Opponents like John McCain have promised to do everything they can to stop repeal and we need to be focused on preserving DADT repeal language in the bill and getting it to the President for his signature. Other legislative priorities also include passing an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, ending the unfair taxation on domestic partner benefits and extending equal benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. As the summer sets in though, it’s time to start gearing up for this November’s elections where the future of pro-LGBT legislators will be on the ballot.

Fenuxe: Why do you think Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is finally close to repeal? Solmonese: So many veterans, both gay and straight, have

spoken up on the issue and it’s their voices that have been crucial in moving repeal forward. At HRC we’re proud to have identified and mobilized thousands of veterans across the country. When you have brave men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line stand up and say that this law hurts our national security and compromises our values, that’s what moves public opinion and members of Congress.

Fenuxe: Which do you think is the most overlooked issue? Solmonese: When you look at media coverage of LGBT issues you see a predominance of stories about either relationship recognition – marriage, civil unions, etc. – or “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” But the fact remains that in 29 states you can be fired from your job solely because you’re gay, lesbian or bisexual, and in 38 states you can be fired solely for being transgender. This violates the basic American value that we should all be judged on our merit and puts LGBT people at particular risk in these difficult economic times.

Fenuxe: You grew up in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. The hopes for the same happening anytime soon here in Georgia, in the Bible Belt, are not optimistic. What can you tell LGBT Georgia residents who are discouraged about the marriage issue? Solmonese: It might not feel like it, but we have

made a tremendous amount of progress in a relatively short amount of time. We didn’t always think marriage equality would become reality in Massachusetts and I refuse to believe that it’s not possible in Georgia and everywhere in this country. I say to Georgia residents, keep up the fight for equality. Take every opportunity you can to speak up. The road ahead is long, but we gain nothing by giving up.

Fenuxe: What’s the most positive LGBT rights experience you’ve had in your career? Solmonese: Being with Judy and

Dennis Shepard when President Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was a real highlight of my career doing this work. When Judy and Dennis lost their son Matthew, they worked for nearly 12 years to see that day. We had come so close to getting hate crimes passed so many times and they never gave up.

Fenuxe: What’s the benefit of being gay in America? Solmonese: As we celebrate Independence Day, even as we are reminded that we don’t have full equality, we celebrate the fact that we live in a great nation. When you look around the world and see things like lawmakers in Uganda considering a bill to make homosexuality sometimes punishable by death, it’s apparent that we do have a lot for which to be thankful for. Fenuxe: What do you think the LGBT community’s responsibility is to the nation? Solmonese: Just like all Americans, we should be contributing members of society. We fight for equal rights, and we have equal responsibilities as citizens of this nation.

Fenuxe: Where do you see the state of gay America in 10 years? 20? 50? Solmonese: Well I certainly don’t have a crystal ball, but I think we are on the verge of some amazing progress. Yes, it’s slower than we all want and there are often steps back for our many steps forward. But looking ahead I see us expanding anti-discrimination protections, having our relationships recognized as equal and being more fully integrated into the fabric of American life. Fenuxe: Thank you for your patriotism, passion and perseverance. Happy 4th, Joe! FENUXEMAGAZINE

WHEN innovators see something missing in the marketplace, they don't complain about it—they create it. So went Kansas City-bred Kate Spade in the early 90s after a five-year stint in the accessories department at Mademoiselle in Manhattan, creating stylish but sensible handbags in classic colors and fabrics. The brand expanded (as always!) to shoes, housewares, fragrances, eyewear and beauty products available at her boutiques around the world, and right here in the Lenox location. THE ambassadors of modern American fashion come from different backgrounds but have a common goal: to single-handedly define style. The gay community has been all too willing to help them out! We take a look at four of the finest American-born, American-bred fashion designers who've defined style for decades.

AMERICA MADE IN

EVAN Lysacek skated to gold in one, Charlotte got married in one on “Sex and the City” and Mariah Carey got married in one in real life. It's a Vera Wang. The Vera Wang is a New York gal who developed her style as senior fashion editor at Vogue for 16 years then for two years at Ralph Lauren before opening her own salon in 1990. Now we've got shoes, jewelry, fragrances, eyewear and housewares to keep us vibrant in Vera through the tricentennial!

FASHION

GLIMPSES of fashion from the 1940s to 1980s can be found in the dashing designer’s line. The New York-born Jacobs honed his skills at Perry Ellis before moving on to Louis Vuitton and designing his own beloved brand of women and menswear. The openly gay, married Jacobs isn’t afraid to speak out either: last year he launched a shirt demanding the legalization of gay marriage. Our neighbors to the south in Savannah have one of the few Marc By Marc Jacobs boutiques in the nation!

THE openly gay Austin, Texas native turned around the Gucci fashion house and brought the Yves Saint Laurent brand to another level before striking out on his own in 2005 with the creation of the TOM FORD brand. Initially known for designing womenswear, Ford quickly expanded his reach to shoes, fragrances, eyewear and menswear. Celebrities and the fashion savvy have embraced Ford's classic sensibilities. Fenuxe loves his racy yet sophisticated fashion ads!

TO SHINING

ATlANTA has had its fair share of patriots who fight for LGBT equality across the city and state, but a select few have spread their reach for our rights to a national level. These gay Atlantans are making us even more proud to call the city home! Kyle Bailey (photo courtesy ProjectQAtlanta.com), Harry Knox, Paul Horning and Ken Britt (clockwise from bottom left)

When Harry Knox was denied ordination as a minister because he is gay, he took his teachings national. The former head of Georgia Equality is now the Director of the Human Rights Campaign’s Religion and Faith Program, playing a crucial role in creating a national network for progressive state clergy coalitions. President Obama even appointed Knox to the White House’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

The local HIV/AIDS non-profit community was the focus of Paul Horning, former chair of Project Open Hand Atlanta. But then it was on to political activism at HRC and a well-deserved spot on the Board of Directors of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund—the nation’s largest LGBT political action committee. The Victory Fund’s goal is simple: get LGBT leaders elected to public office. Horning’s helping to make it happen for the LGBT community.

Kyle Bailey grew up in the mountains of North Georgia and got his political science degree from the University of Georgia but made his mark in our lovely city. After successful tenures at YouthPride and Georgia Equality, Bailey made it to the national stage by taking a position with the National Stonewall Democrats. Now Bailey is fighting the good fight for gay marriage in the Northeast as Development Director at Equality Maine. 18 FENUXEMAGAZINE

Midtown resident Ken Britt worked from the inside to create change on the corporate level. He retired last year as Executive Director of Alston + Bird after 30 years of service and he's a major reason the powerful nationwide law firm has a stellar record on LGBT employment policies. Britt is co-chair of the national board of the HRC and was honored for his distinguished record of service at last month's Evening for Equality.

X-PLORE

Washington, D.C. might be the nation's capitol, but our country was born in The City of Brotherly Love. It's where our forefathers declared that we're all created equal. It's one of the most gay-friendly cities in the entire world. Brothers and sisters, welcome to Philadelphia.

Over ten flights leave Atlanta daily for the two-hour trip to Philly. Ease down at Philadelphia International Airport and catch a cab or car service to your playground for the duration of your visit. The city is wondrously walkable so there's no need for a rental car. Head up I-95 while taking in the Delaware River on your right then roll onto South Broad Street for a “straight” shot into the city. You're entering... The Gayborhood. 20

FENUXEMAGAZINE

Fenuxe's Philly home is at the Loew's Philadelphia Hotel. You've got the finest amenities, the cleanest skyline view and you're within walking distance of the best of gay Philadelphia. The city's Gayborhood is not nearly as spread out as Midtown Atlanta's. Cue up some culture and hit Antiques Row in historic Washington Square West. The Fenuxe find is definitely Blendo, a trendy trip of a shop full of unique clothing, housewares and jewelry that’s a sin to leave empty-handed. A stop by the gay-owned shops Open House and Urban Décor will make for a new featured item for your living room back home. If you want to know where the gays gather, head for Rittenhouse Square Park.

It’s a gorgeous, green gift of a park surrounded by diverse residential architecture and high-end retail shops. Rittenhouse Square Park is much smaller than our beloved Piedmont Park, but size doesn’t matter here. The gorgeous fountain in the center, the jazz bands, the remarkable artwork for sale and the occasional dance troupe roll up into one big friendly atmosphere that's considered the gay cultural center of Philadelphia. When it's time to dine, you've got the ultimate freedom of choice. Philadelphia has one of the best restaurant scenes in the country...outside a certain Southern city of course. If you're still in the park, don't miss, well...Parc. Sit on the bustling patio at this fab French restaurant but if you can't get a table outside don't worry---they open the windows on most summer days so you can enjoy that fresh Philly air from indoors. There's also a pair of grand gay dining options just two blocks from Loew's. The best Mexican food in town is at Lolita and right across the street is an impressive Indian restaurant called Bindi---both are owned by a lesbian couple and will leave you counting down to your next visit. Like many restaurants in Philadelphia, Lolita and Bindi are part of the BYO (bring your own) culture, so make sure to stop by State Liquor Store on your way. Philadelphia delivers when it comes to the gay nightlife scene, and your visit won't be complete until you stop by Woody's. This Philly fixture draws an eclectic crowd and it's always jumping. Start at the main bar at street-level to get the lay of the land, then make your way to the second floor for the cute cocktail lounge and dancefloor. Bars have a 2AM curfew in Philadelphia, so if you're still on Gay Atlanta Standard Time, go one block over to Voyeur. The three-floor funhouse skirts the curfew laws by being “members only” but you can get into the massive megaclub by knowing a member, so just make friends on the way in. You'll flashback to Backstreet. End your phenomenal Philly visit on a high note at Independence Hall. Not only is it the spot where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were created, it's also the site of the first LGBT rights demonstration, on the 4th of July, 1965. Four years before Stonewall, the fight had already begun in Philadelphia. It is all too obvious how our nation's founders got the inspiration to declare everyone has the right to life, love and the pursuit of happiness. It all started in Philadelphia, where living, loving and being happy is a given---especially if you're gay.

THE AMERICAN work ethic is legendary. When we treat ourselves to a meal, the treat is steak. When you want one of the best in the city, you go to Kevin Rathbun Steak.

EATS

The steakhouse set in a renovated cotton warehouse in the Old Fourth Ward seamlessly blends the vintage with the modern when it comes to décor. The stacked-wood wall and exposed brick melds magically with the enormous chandelier and delicate white linen tabletops.

GRILL

THRILL

Grilling steak at home tonight? Show them the goods! No, not those. Follow these steak grilling tips and you'll be master of the meat.

SIDES FIRST, STEAK LAST: Get your sides cooked first, then focus on the steak. KNOW YOUR CUT: You want a cut that's 1 to 1 ½ inches thick to avoid drying out or undercooking. QUALITY IS KEY: If you can't get USDA Prime

Aged Beef, go with Choice-graded or Certified Angus.

OUT OF THE COLD: Make sure the steaks are at room temperature for easy grilling.

SEASON EARLY: Salt your steak 15 minutes before grilling or it won’t stick to the meat.

WAIT FOR THE SIZZLE: You want your grill

hot enough to hear the steak sizzle upon touchdown.

AVOID THE FORK: Use a spatula or tongs so the juices don’t spill out. [see grilling set on page 12] NO FLIP-FLOPPING: You're allowed one flip, and that's only after three to five minutes of grilling. PRETTY IT UP: Give them a quarter-turn halfway through grilling for those cross-hatched grill marks. GIVE IT A REST: Allow the steaks to rest for a

few minutes before you cut so you retain the juices. 22

Wine is no stranger at Kevin Rathbun Steak. With over 200 labels to choose, there’s a pick for every possible palate. The Fenuxe red is the Freemark Abbey merlot and our wish for white is the Stonestreet chardonnay. Sip and savor either red or white and you surely won’t be blue. An array of hot apps and cold apps are at your pleasure. If cold, go local with the creole Georgia shrimp and remoulade. Make it hot with the BBQ pork shoulder smoked in the famous Big Green Egg charcoal cooker and lathered with High Life BBQ sauce. Steak and sides are the goal at Kevin Rathbun Steak and the selection is superb. Mix it up with a little surf and turf to make the night go right. It’s a 22-ounce dry aged cowboy ribeye with a broiled Maine lobster tail that Fenuxe fetches. The steaks are imported from the renowned Allen Brothers of Chicago so this steak and lobster soiree delivers the best of the American Midwest and Northeast. Make sure to pick the right side, which is never difficult with Rathbun’s charmers. Two highlights are the elbow mac & cheese tart with truffle crumbs and the smoky braised greens with Kentucky hog jowl. They don’t skimp on the hog jowl! The perfect end to the perfect American meal? Deep dish gala apple pie with sour cream ice cream. Trust us with this spin on an American classic. Indulge yourself for a night with the succulent staples of American cuisine at Kevin Rathbun Steak.

AN

AMERICAN

TALE

S

She was a middle class girl from the Midwest. Big family, loving family. She had the usual schoolgirl crush on her teachers. A large group of loyal friends. It was ideal. She moved down south to go to college, always with an eye for helping people. People liked her, they responded to her. It could have been her easy laugh or a “cool beans thrown in here and there. She took the gift of connecting to people and decided to run for office. Before she knew it, she's standing in the chamber of the Georgia Capitol being sworn in as a state representative, with the love of her life of 20 years standing by her side smiling proudly. Six months into the job, she's found her footing. She's really helping people, this time on a grand stage. It's a uniquely American story. It's about love and perseverance. It's about the first African-American lesbian to serve in a U.S. State legislature.

24

FENUXEMAGAZINE

Coming from a family of entrepreneurs and selfstarters influenced her as well. If you wanted something, you went out and worked for it until you got it. It was the Bells' way, it's the American way. Bell knew who she was very early on. “I came out around 13,” she says. “It was more to myself than anyone else. Then people figured out what was going on from there.” Like many American families, the Bells had trouble accepting the fact that their daughter was gay. But eventually, the acceptance came. “We’re very fortunate and blessed that time has healed it. It’s pretty freaking amazing,” Bell says. Her family even came down from Detroit to help her on the campaign trail last year. “We are very blessed that we have a lot of love and respect in our family,” she says.

Time to Fly

Planting the Seed

Rising to a position of power was never a far-fetched idea for Rep. Simone Bell, partly due to the racial makeup of her Detroit hometown. “Everyone was African-American, we were definitely the majority,” she says. “The mayor, the school board, everyone was. So I always saw myself in power.”

But her move to the South as a teenager began with adversity. She went from a high school of 2,000 students to a college a quarter the size, Fisk University in Nashville. Aside from the culture shock, the campus was not altogether gay-friendly. Luckily she had some friends attending a lovely school down in Decatur, Georgia. She decided to visit.

Love in The A

Agnes Scott College was a blessing, and before long Bell decided to make the move to Atlanta. After some time at Dekalb College (now Georgia Perimeter College) and working in the healthcare administration field, she enrolled at Agnes Scott and flourished. “We were young and gay and we all had each other,” she says of she and her friends. “It was love, it was awesome.” She spread the love by helping the disenfranchised: fighting for affordable healthcare and workplace equality, helping erase the stigma of those with HIV/AIDS and going to bat for kids, for women's rights and LGBT rights. She organized, she spoke up, she advocated.

She used her voice. That voice made her an American original.

Rep. Simone Bell is at ease in the Capitol chamber. She compares it to a big classroom, with lots of talking and laughing and papers all over the desks. She even shares high-fives with her fellow representatives when good legislation is passed. One of those “classmates” sits behind her: Rep. Karla Drenner, the only other openly gay member of the Georgia General Assembly. Bell appreciates Drenner's presence. “We are disturbed by a lot of the same things, we cheer about a lot of the same things, we laugh at the same things,” she says. Her sexuality wasn't a big secret at the Capitol—just like at school, people gossip. But not everyone knew. The first person she formally “came out” to was a preacher. After a spirited conversation about social justice issues, the preacher mentioned how long he and his beautiful wife had been together. “I figured, 'Well I've gotta come out to someone so why not him?,'” she says. So she mentioned how long she had been with her beautiful partner. He was taken aback for a second but very complimentary. They've been allies ever since. Bell is running unopposed in this year's election for the 58th District seat and is well aware of the work left to be done for her constituents and her state. She's aware of the work ahead for the LGBT community as well. Part of that involves using the strength of the LGBT community to help other movements, therefore building stronger allies for our cause. “Having a voice, being engaged, that’s how we get the job done,” she says. “We have to be on the outside agitating as well as being on the inside. We can’t give up.” It's also about having a sense of self. About knowing who we are and what we're capable of.

“We need to live 100% of who we are every day,” Bell says. “We need to represent as LGBT Americans.” 25 FENUXEMAGAZINE

IT’S EASY to focus on the negative when it comes to equal rights for the LGBT community--let’s face it, protesting is truly an American deed. But let’s take a step back and evaluate where we stand as a community and celebrate where we’re going! PRESS-ING MATTERS Freedom of the press is a vital right, especially when it comes to gay media. Our voices are being heard in a variety of formats and places—none more so than here in Atlanta. Whether it's online, on-air or on your coffee table, our stories are out there and will continue to be told from coast to coast!

MARRIAGE MOMENTUM The last two years have seen a flurry of marriage equality activity, with four states plus Washington D.C. legalizing gay marriage and lawsuits and legislation proposed which would overturn Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act. Before long, we may have the legal recognition we seek!

ARTISTIC DIFFERENCES The entertainment industry is gayer than a sale on v-necks at H&M. Ellen DeGeneres is ruling primetime (“American Idol”) and with Oprah retiring soon, the emerging mogul will be the queen of daytime. From “Glee” to a gay wedding on the big screen in “Sex and the City 2,” we're everywhere!

GAY FOR PRAY It’s become familiar for partners to hold hands at religious services, the Episcopalian Church ordained their second openly gay bishop and a Gallup poll showed that Catholic support of gay relationships is up 35% in just the past four years. Gayfriendly churches and synagogues cover America's landscape.

ASK & TELL After 17 years, the gay military ban Don't Ask, Don't Tell appears to be on its last breath. The U.S. House and the Senate Armed Services Committee have approved an amendment to get rid of the policy, the U.S. Senate will vote next and and if all goes well, the ban could be gone by as early as January!

CORPORATE EQUALITY It's getting easier to be gay in the workplace. The number of businesses with perfect scores on the Human Rights Campaign's Equality Index jumped 20 percent in the last year. Keep an eye out for the new Equality Index coming out in September---even better workplace news should be in store!

AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE The fight for equal rights often comes down to visibility, and either more of us are coming out or America got a new pair of contacts. A recent CBS News poll found that 77% of Americans say they know someone who is gay or lesbian—a whopping 35 percentage point increase since 1992.

Our community is blessed to have so many

wonderful LgBT organizations that benefit numerous worthy causes. For Fenuxe Magazine's oďŹƒcial launch, The Flight Party, we are partnering with one of those amazing organizations: For the Kid in All of Us. For the Kid in All of Us began in 2003 when a group of friends concerned about the plight of underprivileged children in Atlanta decided to raise awareness about the issue and help needy families during the holidays by creating The Toy Party, a toy drive event attended by LgBT and LgBT-friendly community members.

CONTRIBUTIONS Toys and gift cards distributed through The Toy Party: 27,000 Backpacks filled with school supplies and gift cards distributed through Backpack in the Park: 3,700 Money donated to agencies and organizations benefiting Georgia's underprivileged children: $450,000

The Toy Party became a massively successful holiday tradition (the Fenuxe team has been to our fair share of the events), and in 2006, For the Kid in All of Us created a second annual event to cover the summer: Backpack in the Park. Instead of toys, it was backpacks and school supplies this time and Atlanta's underprivileged children were all the more happy because of it. Through their gracious efforts, For the Kid in All of Us has distributed over 27,000 toys and gift cards through The Toy Party, over 3,700 backpacks full of school supplies and gift cards through Backpack in the Park and raised over $450,000 for various agencies and organizations serving georgia's less fortunate. The Flight Party will continue the tradition by benefiting For the Kid in All of Us, and therefore helping the staggering number of underprivileged children across the state. Fenuxe is proud to have the support of the community, and we present The Flight Party to you as a thank you and a way to help an outstanding organization. See you on the 17th!

Dear Mary, After being unemployed for almost a year, I finally got a job and things are looking up! Unfortunately I had to take a job with an ultra-conservative company. It’s not really an issue for me because I don’t like to bring my personal life to work anyway. Here’s the problem, the company has a barbecue coming up to celebrate Independence Day. My partner tends to be more “animated” than most. I’m worried he’s not going to fit in or might feel uncomfortable. What can I do to blend both worlds? Signed, Conflicted in Cabbagetown dear Cabbage Patch Man, There are a lot of simple ways to handle this situation. First, sit down with your beau and have an adult conversation with him about the company and how their perception of you matters from a professional standpoint and encourage him to behave in an appropriate manner. When he stops stomping his feet and shrilly declaring that he isn’t going to hide who he is for anyone or anything, smile and tell him you understand. It’s important to let him know you appreciate how he feels and assure him that you would never want to make him uncomfortable for something as silly as a company barbecue—be really convincing so he won’t realize you slipped a tranquilizer in his drink. At this point, you may need to recruit some friends to help you engage in a Weekend at Bernie’s fandango; string him up like a marionette puppet, dress him in conservative-chic weekend wear (Polo and khakis, boat shoes optional) and don’t forget the sunglasses as his eyes will be, at best, half open with dilated pupils. The beauty is, he’ll make whatever impression you want him to make, because you’ll have full control of his every action! This will ultimately ensure his comfort, as well. Relationships are a lifelong (or…month long) effort to force the other party to be the person we want them to be. never stop trying to change him. It’s how he knows you care.

Love, Mary Makers-McMark 46
