Understanding that the majority of

people derive their opinions on homosexuality from the teachings of their various religions, we at Fenuxe believe it’s important to discuss the state of gay in today’s religious world. While historically the LGBT community has been persecuted, demonized, and even killed in the name of various religions, more and more places of worship are now welcoming us. In fact, we are pleasantly surprised at the number of gay-affirming places of worship throughout Atlanta. Sadly, however, that number takes a sharp decline as you stray from the perimeter. Opinions on religion aren’t hard to find, especially here in the South, and the diversity of those opinions can run very high. That is why it is important to remember to keep an open mind and embrace the freedom to choose whatever religion moves your spirit.

BISHOP

Gene Robinson THE FENUXE INTERVIEW

The issues of religion and homosexuality have never been as closely intertwined and

as fiercely debated as they have in the last 10 years. The man rooted firmly in the center of that debate from the beginning is The Right Reverend V. Gene Robinson—the first openly gay bishop in a major Christian denomination. He hasn’t slowed down since his 2003 consecration into the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, whether it’s advocating for LGBT rights or giving the invocation at President Obama’s inauguration. We spoke to Bishop Robinson while he was in San Francisco working on his book about gay marriage. He discusses growing up poor and gay in the religious South, the LGBT community’s fear of religion, wearing a bulletproof vest to his consecration, and how being gay is a spiritual journey.

Fenuxe: You were raised in a very religious

household, in a poor area in the South in the 40s and 50s. The chances of a little gay boy making it out of that situation were slim enough, much less that boy becoming the first openly gay bishop. So why you?

BISHOP GENE Robinson: It’s a question

I ask myself all the time. I think the reason this has been so big in addition to just coming at the right time is that LGBT people have, like everyone else, spiritual issues. We’ve been told forever that we can’t put together our spirituality and our sexuality. Because I grew up in quite a fundamentalist, narrow-minded congregation, I know what that’s about because I experienced it. I eventually went into the Episcopal Church, which is obviously much more open and accepting, particularly of LGBT people. So I think those parts of me sort of intersected in a way that at least made me want to question how we can put our sexuality and spirituality together.

Fenuxe: There seems to be a widespread fear

among LGBT people when it comes to religion, considering it’s been used against us for so long. There’s even a fear of talking about it among other gay people.

Robinson: Well you know I always say to gay groups, I think it’s easier to come out as gay to your straight friends than it is to come out 12

FENUXEMAGAZINE

as religious to your gay friends. It’s not unlike an abused spouse, you know? To be told to go back to church is like being told to go back to that husband who beats you. The experience of LGBT people in most religious groups has been supremely negative. So it seems almost like a self-loathing thing to do. But the fact of the matter is, you should actually step out to the church now because it might not be the same church that you left. Because the world changes and you may find a really unique spirit there. Almost by definition, [LGBT people have] been on a spiritual journey and we have a lot to offer churches and religious organizations because we know what a spiritual journey is about. Fenuxe: As a holy man and a gay man, what

is your reaction when people use God against you? Is it anger? Does it motivate you?

Robinson: Sure it makes me angry, but I always remind myself that people only believe what they’ve been told. We’re trying to change several thousand years of prejudice against us all in the name of God, so it’s going to take some time. I also remember that I grew up believing the same things too, so it’s sort of the way I stay sympathetic and stay in conversation with people who disagree about this so that I’m not turning myself off from them.

“Some of my most bitter, fierce critics have come from the church community. The way I survive that is, the one thing that is rock solid inside me is I am certain of God’s unimaginable love for me. So in the sense of feeling that, I don’t care what comes at me.” Fenuxe: Tell us about your

consecration as bishop. You were wearing a bulletproof vest underneath your vestments during the service.

Robinson: Yes.

I had multiple death threats at that time. I had full time security. We had this rather elaborate plan. If you look at the footage of it you’ll see a big tall guy dressed as a deacon right beside me during the whole service who was like a fully-armed tank. His job was if shots were fired or a bomb went off he would jump on top of me and get me out. If I was still alive after that happened, I was to be taken to a particular location. It takes three bishops laying hands on you to make you a bishop, so we had three bishops that would be taken to that location and a photographer so that if I was still alive, they would lay hands on me, they would have a photograph to prove it and the consecration itself would not be spoiled even if the several thousand people there were not able to see it.

On the other side of it, I felt really just amazingly calm. So calm in fact that I took an hour nap right before the consecration. And then got up and put on my bulletproof vest and went to the service. Our two grown daughters were obviously very nervous. It gave me the opportunity to say to them, “Look, if something bad happens today, you will know that I was doing what I feel God has called me to do.” Some people live their whole lives never getting to do the thing that they most want to do. For me, one of the joys of being a Christian is you know that death isn’t the worst thing—not living your life, that’s the worst thing. There’s now a second openly gay bishop. Is there a “next first” as far as openly gay people in the ministry?

Fenuxe:

Robinson: I think that certainly for the Episcopal Church, this is now a done deal. If you do this once, it can be an aberration or a mistake or whatever, but when you do it a second time it means that the Church has decided once and for all to move forward with this. I think while there’s still people clearly who oppose it or are uncomfortable with it and so on, I think the Episcopal Church has clearly said that the Church has and will continue to recruit LGBT people in all levels of the Church and its leadership. I think there are other denominations clearly that are not quite there yet—the Methodists and Presbyterians are really struggling with it, the Lutherans have come along really wonderfully, and then of course there’s the Catholic Church and all the fundamentalists. There’s much work to be done but I’d like to think that the Episcopal Church is somewhat in the forefront of declaring God’s love for all of God’s children.

Fenuxe: What would you

want to see addressed in a gay magazine that’s devoting an entire issue to religion?

Robinson: I would like for the gay community to hear that real progress is being made. I would love to remind them that while it may come as a surprise, there are tremendous people working for our community within religious bodies.

Here’s how I would describe this moment in history: for countless centuries, scripture was used to justify slavery and then we began to entertain the notion that we had gotten that wrong and indeed it was religious people who led the fight for abolition. Much more recently, we decided that we had gotten it wrong about women and that we had used selective passages of scripture to justify the subjugation of women. So we set about to fully include women in the life and leadership of the Church. I think this is a similar moment for the Church and we are in various stages of deciding that the way we have understood the very few—only seven— passages that are used against [LGBT people], that we may have been wrong about that. The actual history of the Church is one of better discerning the will of God over time, and part of that discernment is coming to understand that we’ve gotten it wrong. God hasn’t gotten it wrong, and God never gets it wrong. But the Church, in discerning God’s will, often does get it wrong. Bishop Gene Robinson’s book, tentatively titled “God Believes in Love, Straight Talk About Gay Marriage” and a documentary featuring him titled “The Truth Will Set You Free” will be out in early 2011.

is FaiTh the new BLaCK? Unitarians have led the gay-friendly faith march for years, but not far behind is the United Church of Christ. “They were quick to say 'Gay marriage? Why not.' while other denominations were fighting it out,” says Rev. Peter Laarman, the openly gay Executive Director of Progressive Christians Uniting. Virginia-Highland Church and Central Congregational UCC are two local houses of worship preaching the UCC gospel of inclusion.

Look to the number of fashion publications and shows, or the hallowed ground we put “Sex and the City” and “Devil Wears Prada” on. But what about the religions that are in fashion for the gay community?

Graetz. Episcopalians have grabbed the gay headlines for their ordination of the first openly gay bishop in 2003 [see The Fenuxe Interview: Bishop Gene Robinson page 12] and continuing the trend by ordaining a second gay bishop this year. Some branches of Judaism are proving Christians don't have the market cornered on gay-friendly faith. “You can forget about the Orthodox, and the Conservatives are in the middle, but the Reformed are very progay,” says Laarman. The openly gay Rabbi Joshua Lesser leads services at Congregation Bet Haverim under another branch of progressive Judaism— Reconstructionist.

Hindus have been hit-ormiss on gay issues in years past but are beginning to open up more doors. For those with an eye for architecture and faith, visit the gorgeous “Mandir” (Hindu place of worship) in Lilburn run by BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. It's the second largest Hindu Mandir in the world. Gary Laderman, Chair of the Department of Religion at Emory University, says this is all part of a greater movement. “More of the marginalized people have been able to find ways to satisfy their interest in spiritually based connections,” he says. “It's part of a shifting landscape in American religion.”

THE BIBLE DOESN'T say anything about chocolate for obvious reasons—the cacao bean was native to the New World. If things had been different, Westboro Baptist Church might be holding up signs saying “God Hates Fudge.” So when the sweet tooth grabs hold and you want something so delicious it should be a sin, make a pilgrimage to Kilwin's. The Atlantic Station confectionery shop is part of a family tradition going back to 1947 serving up some of the finest chocolate, ice cream, and other sweets around. They're hard at work daily in the on-site kitchen using only the freshest, finest ingredients. They use the highest percentage of cream in their ice cream, making it top graded in the entire state according to owner John Dallaire. “With ice cream, you can mask flavors with sugar,” he says. “We mask it with cream.” Visitors to Kilwin's are most likely to leave with a box of Mackinac Island Fudge tucked under their arms—the franchise's biggest seller. But don't pass over the truffles. The chausse truffle is divine, with a white chocolate center spiked with champagne flavoring and coated in milk chocolate. Talk about devotion. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled when you drop by. One of Kilwin's most unique treats brings a certain superstar songstress around the way. The pimento cheese and beer battered catfish varieties are downright divine. The portion size of the grits isn’t overwhelming, so you’ll have room for a Dogwood favorite—the foie gras “creme brulee” with sauternes-vanilla syrup, fruit compote and mini pancakes. And yes, grits and pancakes for dinner so far—enjoy being devilish for the evening. Many heavenly entrees await but none more so than the Southern fried boneless chicken breast, a savory cut seasoned to perfection (which will make you want to go to confession). Baked mac & cheese and collard greens with bacon complete this delectable supper selection. Top it off with the blackberry-and-chocolate cornbread upside-down cake and you’ll have the full Southern experience without the sneeze guard and booth seating. We’ve all got to break bread somewhere, so make it count with a stop at Dogwood.

AVISCA FINE ART GALLERY

is a contemporary fine art gallery located near the downtown Marietta Square specializing in artworks created by black artists from the Americas, Africa and the Caribbean. The gallery strives to present a diverse range of artistic expressions and to serve the local art community by featuring local talent at the monthly First Friday Marietta Art Walks. Avisca is an extension of Director Byrma Braham's longtime involvement in the visual art and is housed in a newly renovated 2,300 square foot building. Braham co-owned and ran a commercial art gallery in New York City's East Village before relocating to the Atlanta area to continue her passion for fine art.

The gallery features regular themed, group and solo exhibitions as well as related educational programs, and is dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the local community. Avisca Fine Art Gallery will feature "No Escape From Love," an exhibit by Rory Golden October 2nd-16th.

ITCHENS NEW CLEGHORN

KITCHENS NEW CLEGHORN, LLC ATTORNEYS AT LAW

when you need a family law firm that’s truly “family,” go to Kitchens New

Cleghorn, LLC.

Kitchens New Cleghorn’s attorneys and staff have been at the forefront of protecting the legal rights of Atlanta’s LGBT citizens and our families for nearly a decade. Right now, LGBT people and our families operate within the margins of the law, and that makes our legal issues trickier. You need an attorney who understands those issues and can work with you to give you the fullest protection the law allows. Kitchens New Cleghorn helps provide that protection. From Domestic Partnership Agreements to Domestic Partner Dissolutions/ Divorces, from individual or second parent Adoptions to Parenting Plans for separating same-sex couples, or from Wills and Powers of Attorney to Healthcare Directives, you can take steps to protect your property and your family. Kitchens New Cleghorn, LLC also assists entrepreneurs and existing businesses with their legal needs, and helps both employees and employers in navigating Georgia’s employment and labor law provisions. When the anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 went on the ballot in California in 2008, Kitchens New Cleghorn sprung into action and organized an Atlanta community fundraiser. The event netted over $25,000—all of which went directly to the fight for marriage equality in California. When it comes to protecting your rights, Kitchens New Cleghorn, LLC doesn’t give up—it gives back.

KNC Partner Jeffery M. Cleghorn serves on the national Board of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and is President of the Stonewall Bar Association. He is also a former Board Member of AID Atlanta and Georgia Equality.

Managing Member Randy L. New serves on the Board of YouthPride and is a former Board Chair of Georgia Equality. He, along with Dr. Lee Kyser, attracted national attention in 20042005 when they challenged the Druid Hills Golf Club's anti-gay policies.

Dear Mary,

I’ve started dating this guy who’s very religious and I’m not. He wants me to go to his church and I’m tired of making excuses about not going—for me, Sundays are for brunch. How can I make this work? Signed,

Aggravated Agnostic

If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail her at mary@fenuxe.com. Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.

Dear Aggravated, I, too, worship at the Holy Trinity of Mimosas, Melon Balls, and Quiche Lorraine, and I understand where you’re coming from. People frequently tread on my beliefs, attempting to interrupt my reverent adherence to this important ritual and trying to drag me to their church, saying things like “the music is so beautiful” and “you’re his godmother, I think you have to come to the baptism.” Their disrespect for my beliefs is shocking. Brunch is more interesting than church in most cases. You can use this in your favor. Offer to drive him to church but then end up at Einstein’s. If he fights it, wave a Bloody Mary under his nose. But if you absolutely must, compromise. It’s not a solution I’m usually in favor of—when we compromise, everyone loses—but if his hotness is such that you can’t afford to lose him no matter the cost, make the concession. You can go to brunch after church. I feel like you’re getting the raw end of this deal, but hey, as long as it’s reasonable, and not one of those churches with lots of standing, kneeling, sitting, kneeling, standing, sitting (I was raised in one of those), you should be able to doze lightly right through the service…unless it’s the kind where people yell stuff or the kind with snake handling…are you sure he’s worth all that?
