Jane Lynch and Cyndi Lauper really want a Golden Girls_ reboot by Romeo San Vicente
Deep Inside Hollywood You’ve seen Shark Tank, so you know what a “pitch” is. No? OK, it’s when you’re a screenwriter and your agent gets you a meeting at a studio to tell somebody in a suit that you have an idea for a show and will they please give you money. It helps if you’re already famous and successful, such as Jane Lynch, who just won an Emmy for her semi-recurring “guest star” role on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And backstage at those awards she spilled the beans on a project she’s pitching around Hollywood with Cyndi Lauper for a sitcom that will be inspired by The Golden Girls. Now, attention-paying readers will feel a sense of déjà vu over that one, and with good reason: everybody wants to do some kind of Golden Girls-inspired show; this idea keeps getting pitched and then sometimes even announced as green-lit. But so far none of them have really gotten off the ground. Will this one work? We hope. We love Lynch and Lauper and we really want to see them convince Madonna to join the cast. They could even let her direct sometimes. It’s a good idea and you know it. Michael Urie and Becki Newton just wanna have Fun Did you see Fun Home? The stage musical based on Alison Bechdel’s award-winning graphic novel about her childhood growing up in a funeral home was one of the most innovative and moving queer theater experiences of the past decade. And that’s probably why the idea of a sitcom that has absolutely no connection to this material except for its setting and a somewhat appropriated title – in this case, simply Fun – seemed like such a cool idea to 2 Broke Girls co-creator Michael Patrick King and his co-producers Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally. They’ll bring Fun to CBS with stars Michael Urie and Becki Newton, both so much fun themselves on Ugly Betty, and reunited here as a brother and sister who manage their family’s funeral home in Pennsylvania. It could be cute, and we’ll probably give it a chance when it finally hits the small screen. But we’ll always be wishing someone would break into “Ring of Keys.”
Gay Chorus Deep South joins hands with MTV Coming soon this fall to an arthouse theater near you: Gay Chorus Deep South, a moving documentary from filmmaker David Charles Rodrigues that’s been rolling through the queer film festival circuit, and now picked up by distributor MTV Documentary Films. It’s about the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and their 2016 tour of America’s southern states, places where anti-queer discrimination still runs the gamut from polite disapproval to openly and murderously hostile, with more than enough Republican legislators trying to turn back the tide of progress for the LGBTQ community. On this journey the chorus was led by their director, Dr. Tim Seelig, and joined by the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, which made them nearly 300 strong as they sang their way through the Deep South in the middle of a rancorous election year. Obviously, you’ll need some Kleenex when you go, and you might want to refresh your memory of the lyrics to Into The Woods’ “No One Is Alone” or Wicked’s “Defying Gravity,” in case there’s a sing-along screening. Romeo San Vicente slays all Sondheim at Broadway karaoke.
Dustin Lance Black: Mama’s Boy Laurent Bouzereau, the director of Netflix’s great Hollywoodmeets-World War II documentary Five Came Back, as well as of the upcoming HBO doc Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, has a new project. He’ll be turning Dustin Lance Black’s memoir, Mama’s Boy: A Story From Our Americas, into a feature-length documentary. It’s Black’s story, but very much centered on his relationship with his mother, who grew up disabled but possessed a steadfast optimism and strong will. Beyond that we don’t know much, only that Black says that his relationship with her helped bridge unnamed political divides. If you can’t wait for the doc, the book is out now so you can read all the film’s spoilers – here’s one: Black won an Academy Award for writing Milk, so you could say his Mom raised a strong-willed person of her own – and if you can wait, then it’s scheduled to arrive sometime in late 2020.

BOOK REVIEW Tethered by a cord. That’s what people think when they see you and your closest pal: that you’re tethered by some sort of invisible cord. You think alike, talk alike, you sometimes mirror each other’s actions. Where there’s one, there’s the other even, as in the new book “Bosom Friends” by Thomas J. Balcerski, when you’re often poles apart.
> CREDIT | Bosom Friends: The Intimate World of James Buchanan & William Rufus King” by Thomas J. Balcerski c.2019, Oxford University Press
In the years prior to the Civil War, our nation’s Capital was “very much a work in progress”: roads were little more than mud, neighborhoods were far apart and, indeed, Washington DC was a swamp to which most Congressmen had to travel. Since nearly all were landowners elsewhere, few elected officials brought their families to the city with them; those who came solo needed places to live, so boardinghouses – called “messes” – sprung up to house the politicians. It was at one such “mess” that William King met James Buchanan. King was born to be a politician: educated at the University of North Carolina, he almost immediately went into politics after graduation. He was a social man, and very charming, but he never married, blaming it on a broken heart over a Princess who was angered by a perceived insult. Balcerski hints that the Princess story was a convenient ruse. Buchanan was also educated and politically-minded but his personal life differed: he was engaged to be married but a misunderstanding caused his fiancé to call off the nuptials. Before Buchanan could patch things up, she fell ill and died. For the rest of his life, he, too, claimed that a broken heart kept him from marrying.
At that time in history, says Balcerski, homosexuality was strictly forbidden but deeply “intimate” friendships between men were common and even encouraged; it seems likely that King and Buchanan formed one of these while living at the “mess,” partaking in debates together, and working at the Capital. Their “bosom friendship,” however, appeared exceptionally close: tongues wagged and others publicly teased the politicians for their particular bond. But were they lovers, as rumors have claimed for over 170 years? Inconclusive, as you’ll see in “Bosom Friends.” There are many reasons to think either way; although author Thomas J. Balcerski says they weren’t, evidence otherwise is tantalizing. To get there, though, will take some rock-climbing. To understand the lives of King and Buchanan, one must inherently understand politics, of which much of this book consists. This is necessary, since it also shows division between the two men, ultimately both physically and emotionally; the scrappy political competition in which they engaged; and an untraversable gulf of disagreement – facets that, individually and together, are fascinating. Readers will clearly see the affection between the two men here, though we’ll never completely know the true nature of it: possibly-argument-settling written communication between the two disappeared shortly after the Civil War. That sets up a delicious doublemystery that leaves you to make up your own mind: letters lost or tossed? “Bosom Friends,” or more than that? If you’re curious to know, this book will keep you tethered to your chair.

Creep of the WEEK Dave Daubenmire
by D’Anne Witkowski
Let’s go on a jou rney to hell, shall we? I’ve found a But back to the de portal that can tak vil stuff. Daubenmi e has some very, us directly there re well, interesting th . Hat tip to Da eories ve about the souls Daubenmire, forme of our children. r high school footba ll coach and self-pro claimed “defender of “There are for the Christian faith,” ces of dark beyond for showing the wa what y. we can even The way to hell, it imagine that is fu turns out, is throug ll bore h after our child Billie Eilish. ren,” he said. “If th ey can’t abort ’em, they’re going to drug ’em Now, I’m no longe . If th ey ca n’t drug ’em, they r in my 20s. Or my ’re gonna 30s for that matte vaccinate ’em. If r. So I am not supe r ’em, they’re go they can’t vaccinate familiar with Billie nna indoctrinate Ellish. In fact, when them I in school. If th saw that the cover ey can’t indoctrina of one of her recor te ’em ds in school, they depicted a red ladde ’re going to indoc r and Ellish wearing trinate a red jumpsuit be ’em through the low said ladder wi media. If they ca th indoctrinate n’t multiple chains aro ’em through the und her neck, my media, first guess was th they’re going to at the album had take them to th a libraries and tal workplace safety th e k about homo sex.” eme. But I know now that Ellish’s theme is th e devil. Specifically, bringing children to the devil through he r videos, which have millions of views on YouTube. “[The devil] is out of the bottle and ou r children are watch ing it. You with me ?” Daubenmire said during his Sept. 20 webcast. “The de vil is stealing ou r children.” The song and video “all to hell” seems to ha the good girls go ve on Daubenmire’s De set off the alarm vil Detector. “Do you think Billie Eil this idea on her ow ish came up with n?” he asked. “Do you think this imag ery and these song s and these videos, do you think she jus t kinda did it on her own in her baseme nt, like me?” A good question. Th ough Daubenmire’ s webcast is done ag ainst a backdrop th at looks like a full sp orts stadium so I am shocked, SHOCKE D, to hear that he ’s actually webcastin g in his basement. And, no, I don’t th ink that Ellish ma de these songs and vid eo but hey, kids and tec s in her basement, hnology these days , amirite? Anything is possible.
24: OCTOBER 04, 2019
Woah. He got all of this from a Billie Eil ish video? Also, Daub enmire says he’s pro life but Jesus, du de: a GOOD THING th vaccinations are at SAVE PEOPLE ’S LIVES. Then I watched the video for “all the go od girls go to hell.” It be gins with the imag e of Ellish’s bare back be maybe a dozen syrin ing stabbed with ges, after which sh e sprouts wings and falls from the sky an d hits the ground rea lly hard. If that’s wh at Daubenmire thinks vaccines do, well, no wonder he’s again st them. I watched the res t of the video, wh ich consists of a weak and drenched in what loo stumbling Ellish ks like oil, dragging her wings behin d her. Around he r everything catches fire. Because, you know, hell.
I also watched the video for “when th e party’s over” (she has plenty of othe rs, but I don’t have tim e to sit around an d watch music video s all day unlike some people), in which Ell ish consumes a glass , dressed in white, of dark liquid that then pours out of he r eyes like tears. I’m not sure where th Daubenmire’s ab is video fits into ort/drug/vaccinate/ indoctrinate/librar y scenario.
What I do know is that visit with the devil him I was promised a /her/their self and instead what I got were some songs an d videos by what is cle arly a very talented young woman wh o likely doesn’t GA F what people like Daubenmire think about her. “Folks, the assault on the American ch ild is at an all-time fev er pitch and those of us who carry the na me of Christ, we are asleep in the light , baby,” Daubenmi re warns.
I would agree that the “assault on th e American child” is at an all-time hig h considering that jus t about every child in America just bega n yet another scho ol year where activ e shooter drills are now considered bu siness as usual in a country that has mass shooting aft er mass shooting an d does absolutely fucking nothing to stop the next one. Perhaps Eilish’s raw imagery an d sorrowful lyrics are a response to growing up and living in these very times and so many yo ung Americans are drawn to her art be cause it helps them make sense of a seemingly sensele ss world?
Or, you know, it co uld just be the de vil beckoning kids to th library to be vaccina e nearest public ted with homo sex. I guess we’ll never know.
