BOOK REVIEW
It was right here a minute ago.
You saw it, but now it’s gone and you have to find it. Beneath a newspaper, atop a shelf, under a blanket, wherever it is, it was just right here – and as in the new book “Whiskey When We’re Dry” by John Larison, you’d search years to have it back. Jessilyn Harney never knew her mother. She died in childbirth, leaving Jessilyn’s father to raise Jessilyn and her brother, Noah, who was five years older. Noah took care of Jessilyn when their father drank too much syrup. He was a good brother, making sure she was warm, dressed, and protected – until the year she turned thirteen and, as young men are wont to do, Noah had a fight with his father and he rode away. For a few years, Jessilyn did what she could to help her father run things, but he’d gotten addled in that fight, and was never the same. Sensing the truth, perhaps, he schooled her on sharpshooting for protection, and he talked of marrying her off. Six days after he left on a solitary ride, Jessilyn found his bones scattered. Not knowing what to do, she asked if the nearby Mormon family might take her in, and she was denied.
> CREDIT | Author: John Larison >“Whiskey When We’re Dry”
That was when Jessilyn went into the old wooden box that Noah left behind. She found some of his outgrown clothes – things that fit her fine – and she became Jesse. Women on the frontier stuck out, he learned, but a baby-faced man was mostly ignored. Still, he was soft and that cost him; he was
unwise to the world, and that cost more, though guns would ultimately protect Jesse and they’d generate money in wagers with fools who thought a lad wasn’t good with a Colt. But Jesse didn’t want money; he only wanted one thing. Noah had taken up with some outlaws, and there was a bounty on his head, dead or alive. Sharp-shooting was fun, but Jesse only wanted to find Noah before the law did… Reading “Whiskey When We’re Dry” is like opening dozens of little gifts at Christmas: each time a surprise occurs, it’s a delight – the last, no less than the first. Author John Larison does that over and over again, gifting readers with a great opening, exceptional characters, and plenty to unwrap. Set in the years following the Civil War, in an unnamed state, this book offers a lot to fans of many genres: for sure, this is an oater, complete with hosses and outlaws. With stunninglydescribed scenery, it’s a book for adventurers. There’s a gauzily-told romance with another woman here, and small crushes on gun-slinging men. It’s un-PC, so beware! There’s heroism in this novel, but not where you might anticipate it. Take this book on that last-minute vacation you’ve got. Take it to bed, and don’t expect to sleep. Take “Whiskey When We’re Dry,” take, it, take it wherever you go. If you’re in need of a sweeping epic that offers plenty of mini-shocks throughout, it’s right here.

Drama Queen Broadway Performer KFIR debuts new single with a style that only he knows how to interpret.
By Shane Gallagher
As a classically trained ballet dancer currently appearing in Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera, KFIR admits he had his dramatic moments on and of the stage. “I’m a performer, it is who I am,” he admits with a smile. He’s so excited about the track that he made “Drama Queen,” the lead single off his upcoming debut album, Free Delivery. “It was actually the last track I wrote for the album,” he continues. “I love it because of its attitude and sound. It’s catchy, funky and totally NYC. It’s almost a futuristic throwback to the disco era.” The other reason he decided to release “Drama Queen” first is because Free Delivery is an emotionally charged album and he wanted to ease listeners into the intensity. The album questions love and explores loss, pain, anger, loneliness, growing up, gaining sense of self, and becoming the man he is today. Produced by Pablo San Martin and co-written with Javier Cardellino, it draws inspiration from Kfir’s own life experiences while living in NYC and the USA. Kfir’s calls it “James Bond Pop”. The songs are pop/alternative melodies with a consistent use of brass instruments throughout mixed with Hip Hop and R&B beats and some orchestral undertones. “Drama Queen” aims its critical finger at people who fail to acknowledge others. “One thing I hate is when I come across someone and they act like they don’t know me,” Kfir says. “I hate that with a passion! Maybe it’s because of how I was raised but even if I do not remember a person’s name, you can bet that I will acknowledge them with a smile, every time.” Kfir was born in Haifa, Israel; best known as the birthplace of Gene Simmons, the lead singer from Kiss. Today his mom is a secretary, but when he was growing up she was a professional singer. “ I remember going to rehearsals with her and playing hide and seek with my sister under the stage.” His dad is an electric engineer. Though they are close now, Kfir admits he wasn’t always so with his father, at least not in his early years. “He was an athletic soccer player and I think he found it very hard to have a ballet dancer son. We didn’t have much in common. I also think he was too young to be a father.” Dancing was in Kfir’s blood. Classical Ballet, especially, made him feel special, like royalty. When kids would torment and make fun of him, he ignored them, firm in the knowledge that his talent was something unique. It was also his main form of expression. “I was so ashamed of my
20: September 07, 2018
voice,” he remembers. “I just didn’t like the tone of it. I felt more confident speaking with my body.” When alone and in the privacy of his own home, however, he loved diving into his parents’ record collection and belting along to Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson and the Eurythmics. He counts them among his biggest influencers today, along with classical composers like Jules Massenet, Bach, Elmer Bernstein and Hans Zimmer. “It’s amazing to me that I have somehow found the courage to tell my stories vocally,” he says now. “It’s one of the things I’m most proud of with the album; that, and the authenticity of the record.” In fact, Kfir titled the EP Free Delivery because he says it’s the first time that he feel like he is being really honest in delivering his truth to the listener. It’s an exciting project and will be made even more so with the video project Kfir is planning to release along with the record. “The EP will include a music video album exploration, containing five tracks,” he explains. “What’s cool is that the videos will be short mini clips that stand on their own but when watched together, they will present a full music video story that goes along with the album.” “When you are an artist and want to communicate with your audience, you need a vehicle to get to the audience and then provide the big idea to get them to listen. I hope fans truly feel the love and honesty that went into Free Delivery. I hope they relate to it on a personal level and make it their own.”
Kfir’s Free Delivery will be available on iTunes, Spotify and most online stores soon. “Drama Queen” is available now. Visit https://www.kfir.com. Follow on Twitter @ KFIRMUSIC

Alice Temple W ins in The End " "
By Shawn Larkin
Nearly thirty years after the release of 24 Years of Hunger, an album AllMusic Magazine described as “one of the finest, most refined and fully realized recordings of the era,” alternative queer rocker Alice Temple makes her triumphant return to music with The End. In it, Alice delivers a searing new set of self-produced and performed, soul-baring indie pop tracks, all with her venerable, take-no-prisoners bite.
”The concept for making The End was simple,” explains Alice. “Just me in my bed- room writing songs about how I was feeling at the moment. That goes for the style of each song as well. It’s all about moods and feelings. The overall sound of the album is eclectic; home-made; heartfelt.”
introverted. Took me a long time to get it right.
Do you still speak with Boy George? Alice Temple: I do. Not often these days because we are rarely in the same country but we Whatsapp. Last time was 2 months ago. I happened to hear Philip Tracey on the radio talking about George. It was very sweet and I told him to listen to it. Time before that was when a great friend of ours died.
You had a 10 year relationship with supermodel Rachel Williams at a time when supermodels ruled the world. How did you guys come together? Alice Temple: First time we met, I was living in LA. Then in NYC there was a little gang of us girls including Jenny Shimizu. We spoke with Alice from France, where she was promoting the She ended up hanging out with us a few times. Maybe I just figured out that there are no answers. Maybe it just comes with age. How did a BMX champ link up with Boy George? The transition was a matter of weeks and I never looked back. What specific songs on the album mean the most to you? I was quite young. I met George in 84’ in London but it wasn’t Alice Temple: My favorite song is definitely “The End.” It’s until I moved to NYC in 85’ that we got so close, and then I the only one I can listen to and not feel like bits are wrong. I and all your friends were so open about your sexuality while in love my guitar playing on it too. “Move Me” is another one. It’s the public eye. How did you manage that? groovy and simple and the guitar is really cool. Depending on Alice Temple: Truth is, I personally didn’t know what the fuck my moods I like some better than others. I was at that time. Deep down I must have, but I was very confused. I was always in love with gay boys. And what made Do you still have a BMX bike? it even more confusing is that gay boys liked me too. I suspect the copious amount of drugs being consumed scared them too and got in the way of us giving a shit what anyone thought. I never hung out with normal people so to me it was normal. Were there gay role models to look up to? Alice Temple: Personally for me there were no role models at all. In those days, a gay woman meant you had to be super butch. Short hair, overweight and hate men. That was the stereotype. It’s really weird because on the one hand, 98% of my male friends were gay and not once did I ever question the morality of homosexuality, but on the other hand I didn’t know a single gay woman and so I felt like a freak which made me super
