BOOK REVIEW

O

nce, you believed in Fairy Tales. Santa came down the chimney, the Easter Bunny hid colored eggs, and the Tooth Fairy left money for your molars. Once, you were wide-eyed and innocent, too, but those days are gone – even when, as in the new book “Perfectly Clear” by Michelle LeClair and Robin Gaby Fisher, you believe in love. For most of her young life, Michelle LeClair was a worrier. She had to be: her mother was somewhat of a free-spirit who married often and “was gone a lot.” For that, LeClair grew up as the Independent Responsible Child; the one who, as a teen, wanted a job so she could pay for her own car.

Clear” by Michelle LeClair and Robin Gaby Fisher

And so, LeClair’s mother helped her get a job selling L. Ron Hubbard training materials for Sterling Management, an organization run by Scientologists. It didn’t take long before LeClair surprised everyone, herself included, by excelling beyond expectations. Her success – and her mother’s influence – led the Church to invite LeClair to one-on-one member counseling, ostensibly to determine her “purpose on earth,” but also to lead her deeper inside Scientology. Church members offered her their friendship, but LeClair noticed that she was asked nearly constantly for more money. As her career rose, so did the Church’s requests for donations and soon, she was writing astoundingly-frequent fivefigure checks to the organization. And it might’ve continued so, if not for one thing… As a teenager, LeClair fooled around once with a female friend, which she had to confess to a fellow Scientologist, information

that went into a file. Even after LeClair married and had children, her long-ago fling was flung in her face repeatedly – particularly after she tried to divorce her abusive husband. Scientology has long considered homosexuality to be repugnant, she was reminded, and that nagged at her enough to make her question this faith in which she’d been raised. She questioned even deeper when she fell in love with a woman named Charly. Halloween is long over. The decorations have been put away. But if you didn’t get scared enough then, “Perfectly Clear” will finish the job perfectly. It starts with the opening pages, in which author Michelle LeClair is arrested for a crime that never happened, fabricated, she says, by Scientology members. It’s a small story compared to what else follows, but its heart-pounding presence in the front of the book takes readers by the scruff and shakes us. That leaves a lingering feeling of alarm that continues to run in and out of the rest of this memoir as LeClair (with Robin Gaby Fisher) lets readers see what she did not. We’re privy to the manipulation she recalls but didn’t notice then, the pressure she felt but dismissed, and the dawning fear that she could never get away. That makes for an excellent reallife love story wrapped up in a psychological thriller that’ll also make you pick your jaw off the floor about every third page. If you think “Perfectly Clear” is a book you’ll like, you’d better believe it.

Deep Inside Hollywood D

id you miss the Roy Cohn lesson in queer history class? Do you still not know about the closeted, Trump-mentoring, McCarthyite lawyer who hated the LGBT community and himself? Well, soon you won’t be able to blame media erasure for not knowing about one of the most dastardly homosexual villains of the 20th century, because Michael Sheen ( is about to star opposite Christine Baranski, Cush Jumbo and Rose Leslie, playing a character based on Cohn in the upcoming third season of the CBS All Access series The Good Fight. Sheen will play a charismatic lawyer named Roland Blum whose wickedness and corruption provides plenty of resistance fodder for Baranski. Meanwhile, we already reported on the upcoming Matt Tyrnauer (Scott and the Secret History of Hollywood) documentary Where’s My Roy Cohn? (formerly titled Don’t Mess with Roy Cohn) But brace yourself for a second Cohn doc, this one still untitled, from Ivy Meeropol (Heir to an Execution). She’s the granddaughter of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were prosecuted by Cohn in the 1950s, and then executed. Word is that this one will focus intently on Cohn’s private life, based on information from people who knew him, as well as on candid audiotapes of Cohn himself. Not to worry, none of this drops between now and the holidays to bum you out; it’ll all be part of 2019’s gift basket of deplorables instead. Todd Haynes and Mark Ruffalo go after DuPont Three-time Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight) will leave his Hulk responsibilities alone long enough to star in the latest movie from Todd Haynes. Socially conscious production company Participant Media will produce the film – once known as Dry Run, though currently untitled – about corporate lawyer Robert Bilott, who shepherded an environmental lawsuit that turned his career upside down and, most importantly, exposed decades of chemical pollution on the part of DuPont. Ruffalo will co-produce the film, based on Nathaniel Rich’s New York Times Magazine article, “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare.” It will be interesting to see what Haynes can do with this material, as his adaptations of other work always wind up bearing his auteurist stamp, and it’s great to see one of Marvel’s most beloved superheroes take time out to remind audiences that the only real-life heroes are the people who stick out their necks and take on the Big Bad themselves.

Daniel Kaluuya joins Lena Waithe’s Queen & Slim Powerhouse lesbian creator Lena Waithe has a new project going before the cameras. Called Queen & Slim, it’s the story of a black couple on a first date that goes horribly wrong, forcing them into a series of consequences they never anticipated. Starring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) and up-and-comer Jodie Turner-Smith (soon to be seen as Grace Jones in the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic, Sexual Healing) have signed on, while helming duties will fall to acclaimed music video director Melina Matsoukas. It’ll be her first feature film, but she’s already directed cinematic stunners like Beyoncé’s “Formation” video as well as dozens of clips for artists like Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue, and Katy Perry. And the Waithe connection? She directed the Emmy-winning “Thanksgiving” episode of Master of None. In other words, bring on this encore collaboration right now. Will Ferrell, Gus Van Sant crown Prince of Fashion

Gus Van Sant, fresh off the critically well-received biopic, Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot, is about to bring another reallife subject to the screen: the 13-year-old son of Pulitzer Prizewinning author Michael Chabon (The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay). Chabon wrote a 2016 piece for GQ titled “My Son, The Prince of Fashion” in which he detailed a trip to Paris’ Men’s Fashion Week with his young son, a devoted design fan. The heartwarming father-son bonding story went viral, especially among queer readers, and now Will Ferrell has signed on to play Chabon’s role in the film version. Currently titled Prince of Fashion, we’re hoping it turns out to be the kind of film befuddled dads in need of a map for raising their own fashion-loving boys turn to for advice. Then we hope they buy plane tickets to Paris for that boy. Trust us, we guarantee that kid has already been through a lot and deserves a break. Romeo San Vicente knows more queens of fashion than princes.

Wide Awake

Classical Music Phenom Jumps Into Pop with Eyes Wide Open

By Tom Tietjen

Y

anni Burton describes his life as a “gay thirty-something in New York City.”

A graduate of the prestigious Juilliard School in Manhattan, he holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in orchestral performance and is producer and general manager of the Salome Chamber Orchestra, where he has performed alongside a long list of celebrated artists including John Legend, Michelle Williams, Natasha Beddingfield and Rufus Wainwright. In fact, John Legend and Rufus Wainwright were instrumental in helping Yanni to obtain an artist green card. Both graciously agreed to write letters of support for his US residency. It’s allowed the Aussie born double bassist to stay in NYC and create his first album, but surprisingly, it’s not in the instrumental genre he’s become known for. Same Old Love is a pop album and his brand new single, “Awake” is a broody song that brilliantly combines his passions for both classical and pop music. Tell us about your new song, “Awake”. Yanni Burton: The song is a reflection of a stagnant relationship I found myself in a few years back. It was my first longterm relationship and the first man I really fell for. However, somewhere along the road we lost the passion and fire we once shared. The song explores the ideas of feeling alone and stuck in a relationship and the desire for wanting something more. Has your ex heard the song? Yanni Burton: I have no idea. I hope not! I mean, I don’t say his name in the song. I clearly don’t have the balls of Ariana Grande. Looking back, I really do think he knew how I felt and he was also probably struggling with the same issues, so in the end, it was best for both that we parted ways. What’s your message to people looking for love this holiday? Yanni Burton: Go for it! The more you give, the more you get.

24: November 30, 2018

What’s your holiday wish this year? Yanni Burton: I actually just found out I got my wish. My family is coming to visit from Australia. It’ll be our first Christmas together in New York and they will get to meet my fiancé’s family! Fiancé?!? So you’re taken? Yanni Burton: Sorry, boys! What was your favorite memory of 2018? Yanni Burton: My favorite memory for 2018 was giving my fiancé a heart attack. Please elaborate. Yanni Burton: Every year, his birthday falls around pride weekend, and we usually celebrate it at the festivities. However, this year, I decided to step it up. I told him I booked dinner at our favorite club and invited friends to come. So, we’re all dressed up in suits. We get in the Uber and five minutes down the road, he freaks out and is like, “We’re in the wrong Uber. This is going to JFK!” I just smile, and he realizes dinner isn’t going to be in New York. We’re going to London for the week! He had a panic attack about work, toothbrushes, his contact lenses and the overall spontaneity of the event. He’s not that kinda guy. But after I showed him his bag had all of his essentials, he began breathing again. That reaction was priceless!

I find confidence in my body, but in my social and work life. How do you feel about nudity today? Yanni Burton: I’m all for it! The human body is a beautiful thing and comes in all shapes and sizes. There’s no reason to shame it. I say express yourself! Have you ever gone full monty in photos or in public? Yanni Burton: In public, for sure! My parents traumatized me as a kid by being total nudists, so I guess it rubbed off on me. One of my favorite things to do is nude swims on summer nights. Nothing more freeing! As far as photos, I did a semi nude shoot the other week. My first time, believe it or not! What are you most looking forward to in the new year? Yanni Burton: Releasing new music, new videos, and hopefully getting hitched!

We’ve been nice so far in this interview… let’s get a little naughty! Yanni Burton: Haha, cheeky! You’re not shy about showing off your body on Instagram. Is that to show off your Barry’s Boot Camp results or is it a way to get more followers? Yanni Burton: If I’m totally honest, it’s a bit of both but Barry’s and thirst trap photos seem to be the perfect combination. I’ve been pretty keen on fitness for the past couple of years, but it was only when I started doing Barry’s earlier this year that I found the confidence to show off the results. It has helped my follow count, too. We sure appreciate the bikini and brief photos! Yanni Burton: I was the fat Greek boy growing up. Up until 22, I was a big boy, almost double the weight that I am now. Once I started working out, I noticed my lifestyle change drastically. Not only did
