Margaret Cho took time out for Fenuxe to talk beauty, body image in the gay community and why Atlanta is the San Francisco of the South.
The incomparable
comedian and actress was told by network executives to lose weight for her short-lived 1994 television show “All American Girl.” She subesequently suffered from anorexia and drug and alcohol addiction but came back in a big way in 2000 with a one-woman show, concert film and bestselling book called “I'm the One That I Want.” Hit albums and tours followed, including last year's one-woman show “Beautiful”--a fresh look at body image as only Margaret Cho can do it. Cho is busier than ever with her Lifetime series “Drop Dead Diva” (shot in Peachtree City) and her upcoming tour and album release for “Cho Dependent.”

POPULAR HAIRSTYLES go through more changes than Cher at Ceasar’s Palace, so what’t the hottest style right now? FENUXE is on the case. We fanned out across the city to find the most eyecatching cuts. As with most fashion, hairstyle trends typically originate out of Europe. Men’s hairstyles are no exception to the rule, so if you want a hint about the summer clip, we hope you tuned into the World Cup. Those sizzling soccer boys were showing off the latest trend. “What you’re seeing is a return to a bi-level haircut, otherwise known as a mullet,” says Jason Tichenor, American Board Certified Hair Colorist at Paragon Salon. “But it’s been modernized and Europeanized, it’s narrow in shape on the back.” So bi is in! But the overall theme for the men this season is texture, texture, texture. Close-cropped, military-style cuts and the sleek, straight look are out and loads of length, shapes and disconnection are in. Julio Cesar of Julio Cesar’s Salon & Spa concurs regarding the desire for disconnect, listing a contemporary pompadour among the hot new styles. “The cut will allow any guy to have a modern style or conservative look for the

The bob is versatile so you can go jaw-length like Katie Holmes or go with the long bob like Gwyneth Paltrow or get the sideswept bangs popularized by the ravishing Rihanna. The summer sensation at Cesar’s salon is a long, layered cut he calls The Hollywood Diva that mirrors the look of Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian. Bonus? It works for straight and curly hair. With whistles officially wet, it's time for antipasti. And Piola's antipasti to partake of is the ceviche mancora. Tilapia and shrimp bathe in a lemon jalapeno marinade mixed with cilantro, pepper and red onions. The fish is good for your skin too!
The Midtown eateries are many, but when you're eyeing Italian, embrace the pure beauty of Piola.

A Look Inside Our Quest to Be Beautiful
Look around
you right now. There’s the hot guy with the broad shoulders on his way to the gym. The girl with the impossibly flat stomach. Then there’s also the grungy guy choking down a cheeseburger and the girl over there needing two seats to sit comfortably. The unlikely trait they often share, no matter their size or how much they bench press, is that they hate their bodies. And being gay is usually a factor in that hatred. “Body image issues are a pretty pervasive theme in the population I see,” says Will Mahan, Director of The Equality Counseling Center. “It’s a theme that I see across the whole population regardless of their level of attractiveness.” But why are body issues so rampant in the LGBT community?
24
FENUXEMAGAZINE
From Hate to Self-Hatred The taunts the LGBT community face as children, and even as adults, leave a deep scar causing issues that can be manifested in many ways. “We have so many messages telling us we're crap, that we've picked the wrong lifestyle,” says life coach Greta Jaeger. “That's on top of self-esteem issues we already had.” Mahan explores the beauty fixation issue in terms of validations. “When a lot of gay men are growing up, they don't get a lot of validation for being gay,” he says. “So we turn to things like good grades or our work then later on we look at attractiveness and status to get that validation.”
Visual Reality
Mirror Image
A study published in last month's American Journal of Public Health confirms what many quietly assumed. In a survey of 67,000 Massachusetts residents, researchers found that gay men were half as likely to be obese as straight men.
Research shows that people who are conventionally attractive and in good shape have advantages, so it's not abnormal to appreciate and desire that attention.
“It seems like body image issues and eating disorders tend to be higher when you're trying to attract men because men are more visual,” Mahan says. Esther Rothblum, a professor of women's studies at San Diego State University, agrees. The professor referenced dating sites like Match.com when she told MSNBC, “Men will say they are looking for a partner who is not above 35 years old and not above 135 pounds. Women don’t typically do that. They say they are looking for someone with good sense of humor, intelligence, and creativity, or someone who is not an alcoholic.”
Perception vs. Reality
“Fashion and style are all smoke and mirrors,” says Aaron Marino of Alpha M Image Consulting. “There are things we can do to make people look taller, more muscular and more handsome. I help them blend the way that they want to be perceived with how they are perceived.” There's also the intense competition for jobs and business right now, not to mention how competitive the dating world is and always will be. “My clients come to me for two reasons: they want to make more money and they want to have more sex. That's it,” Marino says. The boost in looks typically translates into a boost in confidence for Marino's clients. They realize they can be beautiful.
Many LGBT individuals break through the barriers of body image issues by challenging their own assumptions. Is the beautiful girl in that advertisement the norm or the exception? What percentage of Facebook pictures are photoshopped to (unrealistic) perfection?
“We're helping someone change from the outside in,” he says. “Look, going to therapy is fantastic. But sometimes all a guy needs is a great outfit, a sweet pair of shoes and a good haircut.”
“You can maximize the potential you have but it might be healthier to look at the comparisons you're making and see if those are standards you want to measure yourself to,” says Mahan.
Whichever the cause of the LGBT commmunity's beauty fixation and whatever the harm or benefit it causes, one must evaluate how heavy the desire to be beautiful dominates one's life.
Mahan sends his patients out into public to see what percentage of people they are attracted to. “They think it's going to be 60-70% but it usually ends up being closer to 20%,” he says. In addition to challenging perceptions about a rarefied image of beauty, reevaluating the idea of having a “type” can be another eye-opener. Some are pegged early on as falling for twinks, or lipsticks or butches. That preference gets reinforced by friends, and people are “tagged” with this seemingly lifelong type. It's taking the attractiveness experiment one step further by asking yourself whether those you find attractive match what you think your type has been. “Sometimes it helps to take a step back and see if that hasn't changed,” Mahan says. “Maybe you have more diversity in your interests and likes than you think you do.”
Final Exam
“If you rely on that for all of your self-esteem, then you're eventually going to have a problem and eventually go to more extreme measures like radical plastic surgery or eating disorders to attain that false ideal,” Mahan says. The help is out there if needed. Both Jaeger and Marino pointed out that their services are cheaper than a plastic surgeon's. You can start right now on your own though. Look around you again. What percentage of the people there fit what you perceive to be the “ideal” body and image of beauty? Is it really 60%? Or closer to 20? Is your pursuit of beauty induced by society or merely by your own demands?

does your sleep position determine how many wrinkles you have? Will botox paralyze your face? Will common condiments make your hair shine? Fenuxe finds out beauty's biggest bold-faced lies! myTh #1: PUTTING MAYONNAISE IN YOUR HAIR MAkES IT GLOSSIER If you really want Hellmann's hair, there's a 127-step process that could make your hair shiny. But what's the point when there are glossing treatments that do the same thing, only better and with less chances of spoiling?
myTh #4: YOU CAN GET RID OF CELLULITE Moisturizers and firming creams will temporarily reduce it, self-tanners will camouflage it, but nothing will permanently get rid of cellulite—not even liposuction. Blame Mom and Dad--cellulite is all about the genes.
myTh #5: PREPARATION H REDUCES PUFFINESS The ingredient that's credited with reducing puffiness was taken out after the ointment was reformulated in 1994. There's one other ingredient that could constrict blood vessels, but no clinical studies have confirmed it.
myTh #2: PLUCkING A GRAY HAIR WILL MAkE 10 MORE GROW Step back from the ledge and stop analyzing your hair, it's not true! Plucking the hair out by the root might keep the regrown hair (singular) from lying flat, but it won't multiply like Express 1MX shirts at a gay fundraiser.
myTh #3: YOUR SkIN WILL AGE LIkE YOUR PARENTS’ DID Genetics play a small role in the texture, color and pore size of your skin, but to see who's really responsible for your skin, look in the mirror. Smoking, drinking, tanning and stress are what make make your skin sag and jag.
myTh #6: SLEEPING ON YOUR BACk WILL kEEP YOU WRINkLE-FREE Putting pressure on your face's fibers for long periods could cause more wrinkles. But your face would have to be jammed into a pillow for massive amounts of time to do serious damage, and we're not touching that joke.
myTh #7: BOTOX WILL PARALYZE YOUR FACE Does Botox cause a momentary paralysis? Yes. But you'd have to be injected with a UPS truckload of it to cause total paralysis. And what's a little temporary face paralysis in the name of beauty?

When you
turn down your bed and say your prayers, do you express thanks for good health? Do you include prayers for loved ones, for guidance, for strength? And – assuming you're of the vast majority of us not gracing magazine covers – are you grateful for not being drop-dead gorgeous? No? Maybe you should be. Quite possibly the last thing this weary world needs is yet one more marginalized faction deserving of long-denied attention, but the strange reality is that being absolutely stunning physically is no walk in the park. Yes, it has its advantages. Yet the truly beautiful confront snags in everyday life most of us don't encounter and rarely even acknowledge. For the same beauty that opens so many doors for them leads to a whole mess of very tiny, windowless rooms. We see the amazingly handsome guy or sensational girl and automatically make our deductions, gauge our chances and mercilessly assess the owner of that face and body before we even get the name. By the time we shake their hand, we have attached to that person so many preconceptions and pieces of our own physicality baggage, it's a wonder they can still stand. We often slap deviousness – or at least egocentric selfishness – onto the poor soul who just happens to look great. In the mix as well is our desire, with its smaller cousins of wanting to possess the beauty, be friends with the beauty, and be attractive to the beauty. All before anyone's said hello. Think of it in a real estate way. You stumble upon an agreeable, pleasant, ordinary meadow. The place itself isn't intimidating in the slightest. It's just nice, and therefore open to possibilities. But the fantastic waterfall splashing on the crystal pool surrounded by iridescent stones knocks you out. This is a place to show off. This is a place to own, to brag about. This place is a challenge.
"the same beauty that opens so many doors for them leads to a whole mess of very tiny, windowless rooms."
Meanwhile, both waterfall and meadow grasses are simply just doing what they're there to do. Falling, growing, etc. Neither handed out any agendas. Go easy on the gorgeous. For every door that flies open for them, minimal breathing space waits within. For every trace of aloofness you perceive, there's a history of cold, hard bias dealt with. By all means, you can still want them. But your best bet at getting closer – or just being real and human – is a variation on the old 'blinders' technique. With the fantastic-looking man or woman, just act like nothing's incredibly, ridiculously right.

Dear Mary, I recently took the leap and came out to myself. I even went out to a gay bar for the first time! It was a blast and I met some great people. Trouble is...Atlantans are hot. Super hot. I’m just an average guy from the burbs and I don’t know anything about this life. What can I do to fit in? Yours truly, Size 38 Levis
size 38, i’m just going to assume “size 38” was hyperbole. i mean... you can’t really be a size 38 and still be able to go out in public without jeers and stares, right? especially in atlanta. the south is known for it’s rigorous body-maintenance regiments, and you’re simply going to have to accept that. now, first thing’s first: put down the fork. Gays should only be consuming anything of sustenance once a day (brunch), and by sustenance, i of course mean mimosas. Mimosas are a wonder food for your body, have a negative caloric impact and are laden with health-boosting properties, like Vitamin c and alcohol. paired with your rigorous mimosa fast, you’ll need to spend somewhere between four and six hours in the gym every day. one of those hours should be devoted to intense cardio, 45 minutes to strength training of either the upper or lower body (depending on whether you top or bottom), 45 minutes on abs and anywhere from two to three hours making eye contact with that guy near the inverted leg press machine. remember that “self esteem” is a fleeting, ignoble preoccupation. squeezing your ass into your 13-year-old sister’s jeans, on the other hand, is an accomplishment you can treasure for a lifetime. never forget, it’s who you are on the outside that counts.

That Beautiful Moment by Maria Rivers
You know who rocks? Buddhist Monks rock. They spend years constructing a picture out of tiny, handmade tiles that they have cultivated from Mother Earth. In a very meticulous manor, these guys work together to make this monument absolutely perfect. Then, when the beautiful masterpiece is finally finished, they have a huge party and destroy it. That’s just nothing but beautiful. I had this girlfriend one time, she was quite a hot shot. We kind of knew deep down that we weren’t going to have the white picket fence and the 2.5 kids together, but we held on for a while. We had this idea to have a 365 day relationship. No more, no less. Just one year, then we would go our separate ways. We would talk about it at first as if we were writing a screenplay. Then, when we got to the end, we would get very sad. I guess we both really loved each other. That’s exactly what would have made the whole idea work... well, that, and the pretense that nothing lasts forever, so seize the moment! When we as humans are conscious that things aren’t permanent, it makes them sweeter. “THE MOMENT” - that’s what is beautiful to this dyke. I do love that beautiful moment.

“Where Women Come OUT”
The moment I am having right now will never happen again. Sometimes I think of that girl and I wish I had more moments with her. But, I won’t waste too many moments thinking of what could have been. I would rather work on savoring new beautiful and precious moments.
