Must-Haves

Retro Sunglasses Sunglasses are an inevitable part of an Atlantan summer. If you're out to get new shades try donning a pair that combines retro vibes with a contemporary twist – like these Oakleys with a smokey gray frame and mirrored lenses.

Must-Haves For Your Most Stylish Summer Ever

Oakley Frogskins, $110

Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

Just because you're wearing mainly shorts and t-shirts when the weather warms up, it doesn't mean that you can't dress up your look. With just a few of these essentials, you can update your wardrobe so that this summer will one of your most stylish ever.

Casual Sports Shirt No matter how casual, a shirt will always appear more dressy than a t-shirt. Go for a soft cotton sports shirt and you will have the same comfort wearing it as you would a t-shirt – and you will look more refined. Brooks Brothers Sports Shirt, $70

Varsity/Pilot Jacket This type of jacket – shorter and fitted V-shape with a zipper – is perfect to throw over just about anything when the evening cools. Forsake any frat boy associations by keeping it clean and free of logos. It's masculine edge and casual comfort will make your style take off. H&M Go Gold Collection Jacket, $50

Dressier Shorts Shorts should always be comfortable to wear, but they often look a little more messy than dressy. Go for a pair that would look good with a dressier shirt. Add a linen belt and you’ll be hot to trot. American Eagle short (with belt), $40

Diesel Tepphar Jeans, $348

Loud Sneakers Sure, sneakers have always been prone to be colorful, but this season they are more colorful than ever with vibrant hues and even neon accents. The question is how bright will you go? New Balance Running Sneakers, $145

Bold T-Shirt Of course you can't go through summer without wearing a t-shirt, but this season choose one with a great print or a pop of color to add that little extra to your look. Topman Eagle T-Shirt, $44

14 : April 10, 2014

Dark Denim Dark denim (blue or black) that hasn't been washed or treated in any way is a big trend this season. Slip them on with a colorful or printed t-shirt and you are ready for a night on the town.

With warmer weather comes the inevitable urge to don lighter and brighter clothing. Last year's color-blocking trend continues, but this year it seems more segmented. Additionally, there is less disparity of colors as compared to last year. So inject some freshness and fun into your look this season by combining dark shades with vibrant colors, wear a colorful detail or do segments of the same color scheme. Uniqlo T-Shirt, $30

Traditionally, sportswear was gentlemanly attire fit for physical activity like riding or a game of tennis – and that's exactly the look that's popular right now. So even though we may view these items as more formal they are, in fact, based more on function. Another way to look at this trend is to think about clothing fit for a country club. Event

Atlanta Cotillion Broadens Horizons

The annual Atlanta Cotillion has, since its inception in 1997, raised an impressive $1.3 million for AID Atlanta. However, event organizers are steering the event in a new and exciting direction this year! The night’s fundraising goals will be no different, but the event itself is changing to represent a new wave of cotillion — which this year is themed Cirque de Nuit en Rouge.

Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director | Photos by JM Photographics Not only does Atlanta Cotillion raise vital funds that are needed for AID Atlanta’s work throughout the year, but it is one of the best part ies in gay Atlanta. In fact, the Atlanta Coti llion is one of this city's largest early summertime events (this year it will take place on June 21, the first day of summer). Orig inally the Cotillion was centered around a de butante ball featuring a pageant as a nod to Atlanta’s rich Southern traditions. Each contestant would raise funds individually and everyone would come together at the end for the ball. However, the last queen was crowned in 2012. Since then the cotillion has changed its focus to be more about the fashion-forward even t itself. It’s a change growing to new dimensions with this year's Cotillion that’s even evid ent in the name. No longer is it just the Atlanta Cotillion. Going forward the event will be p resented by Atlanta Cotillion with a new theme each year. This year's theme is Cirque de Nuit en Rouge – circus of the night in red. “Thi s will be a new wave of Cotillion,” David Janke, chairperson of the 2014 Atlanta Cotillion Pres ents, explains. Janke, who was also crowned at the 2012 Cotillion and therefore still

reigns, is very excited about this year's party. “By transforming the event into Cirque de Nuit en Rouge, we want to make the event more inclusive and at the same time bigger, bolder and better,” Janke says. The wonderful evening will take place at the newly renovated Delta Flight Museum. Reno vations are actually scheduled to conclude right before the cotillion party begins. Cirque de Nuit en Rouge will be the updated venue’s maiden event. With all of the changes what should guests wear to this year’s event? “We wanted to get a wider range in the community and make this a fu n, fashion-forward inspired event where ther e really are no limits to what you wear,” Janke tells FENUXE and continues, “That also translates into if you don't want to wear a big costume, you can wear your tuxedo or show up i n a fabulous cocktail dress. We want to reach not only the gay community but wider than that. We want to be all-inclusive and let everybody be part of this fresh, fun phase of the Cotillion – a fashion-forward avant-garde bang of an evening!” So dress up in your most outrageously creative costume or show up in

Both on-stage and happening right in the crowd there will be performances that are sure to wow and thrill gues ts. Additionally, Janke teas es that a very wellknown DJ will be setting the musi cal backdrop for the nigh t. NightLIFE

Beards and Bonnets D. David Kinney

GRAB YOUR HOT GLUE GUN AND PULL OUT YOUR ARTS AND CRAFTS TABLE, BECAUSE IT’S TIME FOR THE ARMORETTES’ EASTER DRAG RACES! THE HOMEMADE EASTER BONNET CONTEST AND RACES ARE ALWAYS A HOOT, BUT THIS YEAR THE ANNUAL EVENT IS GETTING BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER.

22 : April March10,27, 2014 2014

“We’re going to have the old favorites and some new things we’re excited for,” Co-Chair of the Armorettes Kevin Crumsey details, “We’re bringing back the underwear auction and we’re adding a new dunking booth. Dunk your favorite drag queen!” Make a donation and you can hurl giant balls toward your favorite entertainer in hopes of sending them crashing down into the water. If you make a larger donation they’ll even let you walk up and push the lever yourself. Of course the always entertaining and colorful Easter Bonnet contest is back for 2014. But be prepared to pull out all the stops. This is one event where your ‘mad’ hatter skills don’t mean much unless you go big and beautiful. “People are very creative,” Crumsey says, “I’ve seen hats as large as hula hoops before. If you want to participate in that event get the scissors out and make a great bonnet!” So what about the people who aren’t dressing up in their new Easter bonnet? “Dress in what makes you feel good. If you’re not participating in the

bonnet contest, it’s just a casual event. What makes you comfortable is best. Some people even dress in drag.” Crumsey explains. In addition to the Armorettes fabulous costumes and the fun games, Crumsey also looks forward to meeting the new people who come to the event each year. “We get a lot of new people, new faces and even straight people because it’s a festival,” Crumsey adds, “I love it when we commingle, because you don’t have to be gay to come to the Drag Races. It’s about being equal and working toward a common goal. I love that we can all come together as human beings and have a great time.” The Easter Drag Races have changed over the years, however, the festival’s common goal has always remained the same. “When the Easter Races started people were dying and being abandoned by their families,” Crumsey remembers, “They didn’t have anyone to spend Easter with. It started out as a way to raise money and

create family at the same time.” Raising money is an important aspect of the Easter Drag Races because the annual event is one of the Armorettes largest fundraisers for its PWA fund. “Everything you give us go to the PWA fund,” Crumsey remarks, “We raise money throughout the year and then decide what organizations to support. We review each organization and make sure they’re legit and worthy. We usually try and keep it to four [beneficiaries] because we want to give a sizable check to these organizations.” Everything the Armorettes do is devoted to raising money to help those living with HIV and to find a cure. In fact, it’s the reason Crumsey joined the organization as Ms. Trashetta Galore. “It’s what got me into it,” Crumsey recalls, “Prior to the Armorettes I only did drag for my friends at the Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus. But I’ve always been community-minded so this enabled me to give back to our community. It’s the reason we do it.”

Since the Armorettes were first founded, they’ve raised over $2 million and donated that money to 27 different HIV organizations. They’ve also become the longest running camp drag show in America. That’s a long way from their humble beginnings at the Armory bar. “The group started out with a few employees that would dress up in drag to keep customers entertained during the Falcons halftime,” Crumsey says, “The Falcons weren’t very good during those days and people would leave during halftime. The customers took such a liking to it that [the Armorettes] became the main event and not the football game. Then with the onslaught of AIDS and people dying in our community, it transformed from just entertainment to raising money for our brethren.” You can join the Armorettes at the annual Easter Drag Races this year on April 20 for fun and games at Burkhart’s Pub starting at 2 p.m.

PERFECTLY

SUITED VACAYS

Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

ROAD TRIP If the expression “getting there is half the fun” resonates with you, consider a good, old-fashioned road trip – a favorite American pastime. Positioned somewhere between careful planning and boundaryless adventure, you get the opportunity to experience and see large chunks of American landscape (albeit most of it through a car window). Whether you choose to go from city to city or want to explore the great outdoors, a road trip is the perfect way to do it. Take it from an experienced road tripper, there are no limits to the adventures you’ll encounter on the road. Anyone whose personal and work life is full of schedules,

It's about high time to shake off those winter

project deadlines and meetings. On a road trip you get a taste of life without a crammed day planner. You’re free to basically just get up and get out on the freeway and see where it takes you – even though a little planning is very helpful!

chills and start planning your summer vacation.

SPA RETREAT

But have you ever thought about what kind of vacation you really need? Does your busy daily life call for a party-cation or a spa retreat? Or does your humdrum routine simply scream “take me on an adventure?” Well, FENUXE is here to help guide you to different types of vacation - and which one might fit you the best.

24 : April 10, 2014

STAY-CATION Ever get the feeling that you're missing out on everything your city has to offer? By the time you’re done with work and necessary errands, all of the new restaurants, gallery openings and fun events have already zipped by without you because you’re constantly running in the same circle. It's time to get out and enjoy the city and play the role of tourist in your own town! It’s like a trip that you can enjoy without leaving all the comforts of your own home. Alternatively, you can always check into a local hotel for that out-of-town experience. Anyone who wants to feel more connected to the city where they live. Nothing roots you more than experiencing all of the quaint nooks and crannies of your city. Developing roots in your city will help you enjoy where you live even more. This is the perfect option if you don’t have many days off of work.

If your days are a hectic race to make everyday deadlines, it is time for you to unplug entirely by taking a spa retreat. Here you can lower that high-paced pulse of yours for a few glorious days. You may go through a few days of withdrawal symptoms from not having your smartphone strapped to your body at all times, but you'd be surprised at how rapidly the need to be connected evaporates. And this way you have a ton to report, tweet, facebook and pin once you get back home. Anyone whose everyday life is consumed by a busy schedule filled with appointments, email, voicemails, projects and social events. Also, if you have a fervent need to document everything you ever do on social media platforms.

ACTIVE VACATION Even though most people equate vacation with relaxing and laying low, your time off is an excellent opportunity to regain some of that lost form and condition or reach new fitness goals. An active vacation doesn't need to be sweatdrippingly hard or include extreme sports. Daily hikes in beautiful scenery or lengthy bike rides through stunning landscapes will do wonders for your health, too. Anyone who may be a little too inactive on a daily basis or fitness buffs. An active vacation that allows you to enjoy increased physical activity may help promote living a healthier lifestyle when you’re back at home.

CITY DESTINATION Everyday life can quickly become characterized by routine, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but eventually you may start to feel the urge to break free of the daily grind. A good way to snap out of it is to visit a big city you’ve never visited where everything is a new experience and your normal routine goes out the window. Sights, shops, shows, new people and experiences are all waiting to be found around every corner! Anyone whose daily calendar seems to be stuck on repeat. Your mind could use inspirational reboot every once in a while. A city vacay is also a great option if you only have a weekend or a short amount of time off of work. In a large city you can squeeze lots of different things into a few days.

PARTY-CATION You know how the saying goes: Work hard, play hard! If you live by this mantra your vacation is the time to splurge on everything from shopping and great drinks to dining and entertainment. This type of vacation is perfect if you travel with a group of like-minded individuals. They will not only amp up the party, but can also help you keep up the pace. Even though you will probably return to work a little sleep-deprived, you will feel energized on so many other levels. Anyone who spends long hours in the office and doesn’t get to enjoy the fruits of their hard labor. You may end up spending a small fortune on this vacation, but you worked for it and you deserve it! Play It On Your Speakerphone Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

The way we listen to music has changed immensely since the introduction of the MP3 player and the smartphone. Music is mobile now and we listen to our favorite songs everywhere we go. We’re not necessarily at home sitting in front of a stereo system. In fact, many forego a traditional sound system and choose a good portable speaker. They will connect with your smartphone, music player or computer allowing you to simply stream your music . A positive side effect is that you don't need to be 'plugged in' anymore and can share your musical experience with your friends - regardless of where you are. 28 : April 10, 2014

The salty water will soften your skin without stripping it of natural oils. It will also aid in the natural exfoliation of your skin. Toward the end of your soak, wash and condition your hair. Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Grooming Director

You know how a shower can make you feel clean and refreshed? Why not indulge even more in the practice of bathing and experience how a more ritualized bath can cleanse not only your body but also your mind? All you need is a bathtub and a few remedies to make your bath less of a routine and more of a ritual.

BEFORE

Prior to immersing into the warm water, it makes sense to prepare the skin for the wet element. Do so by gently scrubbing the skin free of dead skin cells and applying a cleansing mask to your face. Also, use this time to concentrate on breathing deeply and letting your more relaxed state begin.

J. R. Watkins Menthols Camphor Bath Soak, 14 oz., $10

Bumble and Bumble Seaweed Shampoo ($23) & Conditioner ($24) , each 8fl. oz.

AFTER

Rinse off the salt water after getting out of the tub and pat your skin dry – remember it is softened after soaking so don't rub too hard. Immediately after drying off, rub body lotion or preferably body oil into the skin. That way you will retain the remaining moisture in your skin. PROdUCTS:

FENUXE

Taurus [APR. 20 – MAy 20]

Istanbul, carpets, bazaars, scents, mystique, dust, sandals. Put everything you have in a satchel and be on your merry way. Observe the ways of strangers, learn from them, and practice letting your guard down. Wanton and wild on the 13th.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] For once in a very long time, you are content to stay where you are. You do not feel driven to hit the road, explore, or find new places to rove. Nonetheless, it behooves you to take a break on the 11th. Close to water, sturdy burlap, and neutral tones for a change. Neutral? You? Yes. Think Bosphourus.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Golden oranges and yellows, slinky abundance in stretchy, yet structured toile. No hiking for you in the near future! Lazing, stargazing, sailing, being driven, carried, or riding. Rememberewhat to do if you should fall? Clamber right back up and break into a steady canter. Your wistfulness will beguile on the 21st.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] You dare go places where you understand not a lick of what they are saying to you. Is it self-determination? Nonchalance? Who cares, really? Watch out for the dumplings, baby, you may succumb early on and frequently thereafter. Loose the preppy look--it’s a no-brainer, literally. Go hog wild on the 13th.

virgo

[AUg. 23 – SEPT. 22] Everything French, even Patois, exerts an undeniable pull on you. St. Bart’s exudes an irresistible charm. Your friends encourage you and help you navigate your recently acquired extravagances. Bespoke? Sure. Custom-made-everything, as is befitting the successes you have achieved. Be sure to share a little extra kindness on the 11th. You will do immeasurable good.

libra

[SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] Wanton wandering, wishful-thinking, play fair and you will be treated fairly. Go spelunking, someplace where you have to go, glory in it. chin down deep, best done in dungarees, chin up, headlight in place. Stay aware of your surroundings, gale with wonder at sights new to you. Careful and steady was you of yesteryear, challenge yourself, dare to be dirty on the 23rd.

scorpio

[OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Descend in glory, billowing, smooth, metallic, clinging to where the light is unforgiving. Slink your way over the tiled mosaics, slither through marble chasms, explore in perfidy the lairs and haunts of ancient deities, their pyramids reeking of blood of yesterday - or is it just a remnant of dribbled catsup? Look for rainforests. Do not let your beloved companions stray out of sight on the 14th!

SAGITTARIUS

[NOV. 23 – dEC. 21] You meander, you are attracted to structure, but yet for some reason that elusive Madmen silhouette is not for you. It tickles your fancy, but requires too much STUFF, which is your current quandarybecause what really matters to you? It is not your stuff. It’s a hug, a grin, a mutual endeavor, a memory. Reach out on the 12th.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Long, lean profile, ready for the home sprint, winding up, then winding down. You will take it in stride, sporty, comfortable, and as practical as you are. The 19th allows you the opportunity to dilly, to dally, and to play. Watch out for friends, and be on the lookout for new ones, as well.

AQUARIUS

[JAN. 20 – FEB. 18] Time to tend to your fancy pants. face it—undergarments should be to die for—not to die in. If you DO NOT begin dressing from your under most layers, everything you pile onto your foundation is distorted and no longer reflects the true proportions that are your essence. Move freely, go for fit in all you do, and remember that even the unseen elements are visible to the discerning heart. Be gentle to yourself on the 18th, my friend, and be ready for some trekking in places far and wide from home.

PISCES

[FEB. 19 – MAR. 20] Through these tumultuous times your sense of delight in color and line has always been there to buoy your spirits. Your gifts are subtle, but noticed by all who come within your sphere of influence. Dare to change your style now that other elements have been reordered. The 17th will bring you a very nice surprise!

ARIES

[MAR. 21 – APR. 19] Why do you do these things to yourself? In the interest of “a clean sweep,” you have once again purged your abode of all those entrails that interfere with sparseness, but add dimensions to whatever endeavor (or outfit) you undertake. So, by golly girl, how the heck you gonna hold yer britches up if you donated the BELTS, the ribbon, the suspenders? There HAS to be A Happy Medium (Naja Elieva) that anticipates your urges to donate, and waits just a few days before delivering. Go visit someone you have not seen for a while on the 14th, and make sure you have your passport with you.

Holler Poodles!! While my job as a triple “ZZZ” list drag queen celebrity may sound all glitzy and glamourous to some, it also requires hard work. I’ve just returned from Fashion week and an experience I’ll never forget. While I was under the impression I was headed to Atlanta Hartsfield LaToya Jackson International Space Port for a flight to the Mercedes Benz fashion show in NYC, I was disappointed to find I was headed to the exotic city of Jonesboro for their fashion “minute.” With Real Housewives of Atlanta Celebrity Look-A-Likes judging, the fashion show had its moments but was definitely not up to my international standards. NeNe Leakes-A-Lot was serving attitude, Porsche looked like a Pinto and Kenya-No-Moore was Breaking-Wind Fabulous although she did fill the room with a certain air. Kandi was humming along the whole time-it was only later I was informed she wasn’t singing. Maybe she was filled with the spirit something. Hmmmm. Fashions from wannabe fashion star Bob Tackie were less than impressive. Duct tape and hot glue were prominently featured throughout while still leaving the viewer wanting more. Speaking of more, I wasn’t sure but I think I saw some balls under that duct tape. Work it giirls!! And color is the trend for summer! Golden Rod, Mustard, Yellow, Chartreuse, Rust and Burnt Umber are your featured color story. As I think about it, those colors are featured in my panties. What a coincidence!

NORCOSTCO ATLANTA COSTUME TIP OF THE WEEK: Cutie Pie Clint says “We have a new line of lashes! Ardell Professional Line Double Up Lashes have twice the amount lashes for a more dramatic look. It’s like TWO pair of lashes in one! Double layer style gives you a fuller, thicker look. Reusable and durable, so you get your money’s worth! Each lash strip is knotted and feathered by hand to achieve the highest quality. Achieve the ultimate glamour look with 6 new styles! Ardell Professional Natural Lashes are available in a 4-pack. An incredible value. We’ve also cut the prices on the rest of our lashes by up to 25% and have a larger selection of lash glue, including DUO Brush-On Adhesive, Ardell Lashtite and Lashgrip.”

Love and lashes,

MEP If you have any questions, comments or feedback, please contact me at maryedith99@gmail or on twitter @maryedithpitts. 44 : April 10, 2014

A Table On The Roof D. David Kinney

As spring continues to bloom around us it’s hard to shake the urge to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. And if you can do it with a cocktail and tasty food to nosh on… well that’s even better! Springtime in Atlanta was tailor-made for rooftop dining, so we’re highlighting a few of our favorite spots.

Rooftop 866 rooftop866.com

This chic spot at the Renaissance Midtown has perfected rooftop dining and cocktails. Starting with the decor, guests are immediately immersed in a relaxing environment that offers a modern nod to the great outdoors. Let the stress of your day melt away as you get comfy on one of their sage green cushions that sit below gently swaying English lavender planted nearby. Even though it is spring the temperature can dip down and get a little chilly at night. To keep guests comfortable day and night Rooftop 866 has three beautiful firepits. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail don’t miss their Ginger Caipirinha. It’s made with Leblon Cachaca, freshly muddled lime and ginger honey. For an entree you can’t go wrong with the Char Crusted Turkey Burger. It starts with a juicy turkey patty and adds perfectly melted provolone cheese, BBQ sauce, grilled onion and avocado.

Best For: Small Groups, Dinner Dates

Sun Dial Restaurant, Bar & View sundialrestaurant.com

What list of great rooftop dining in Atlanta could possibly ignore The Sun Dial downtown? You may not be sitting outside, but you will be a towering 73 stories up in the air. In addition to the restaurant’s incredible 360-degree panorama view that continually rotates, the restaurant also boasts being Atlanta’s only tri-level dining complex. The top level is where you can sit down for an always delicious meal. Below the dining level there is a cocktail lounge, and on the lowest level you’ll find an observatory. There aren’t many places where you can enjoy exquisitely prepared food while looking on a sprawling city below. It makes for a truly unique experience. Admittedly, this rooftop option is most likely not going to become your weekly go to spot. But it is a welcome treat for a special occasion or when you’re in the mood for something different. If you’re local and want to try The Sun Dial without the crowds we suggest reserving a table for brunch. Ready to tackle the menu? You can’t go wrong with their house made pimento cheese that is made with a sinfully delicious sweet bacon jam. If you’re hungry head straight toward the sweet potato pancakes. Yum.

Best For: Brunch, Business Lunch, Dinner Dates

5 Seasons Westside 5seasonsbrewing.com

Lots of people come to this fun spot for their great beer selection (including their own homemade brews) and the incredibly tasty food. However, rooftop diners flock to 5 Seasons Westside for what it hides upstairs. Large glass garage-style doors open up creating a large rooftop dining area. The view overlooks where Marietta Street and Howell Mill meet. If you enjoy people watching this is a great spot because Octane Coffee down below always has a steady stream of people going in and out. For dinner try the Georgia Rabbit Enchiladas. They’re made with locally sourced rabbit, sweet onion, a spicy cheese sauce and carrot salsa. If you looking for something a little more - ok, might as well just say it, chicken - the Sweet Tea Brined Southern Fried Hen is super tasty.

Best For: Large Groups, Guys Night Out, Beer Lovers 50 : April 10, 2014
