With possibly one of the hottest summers we have had well underway, there is nothing better than wetting your whistle, quenching your thirst or sopping your chops with a nice, ice-cold brew. Fortunately, for you, Atlanta delivers some of the best crafts around. A wide variety waits to be poured ranging from classic lagers to newfound, exotic creations that will tickle any beer connoisseur’s fancy. In addition to bountiful tastings, these local breweries offer informative tours, taking you behind the scenes to see where all the hangoverinducing magic happens. Listed below are some of the most popular breweries to check out whether you are a beer-lovin’ loner or looking for an exciting venue to host that summer gathering that you really don’t want to have at home for the fifth time this year.

FIRST UP on the list is Monday Night Brewing; its headliner is about as literal as it gets. An Atlantabased bible study is responsible for its founding. Every Monday night, a group of guys got together to brew beer as way to get better acquainted. Founders Jonathan Baker, Jeff Heck, and Joel Iverson spent the next five years perfecting their Monday night hobby and launched themselves to the public. MNB’s menu falls directly under the moniker’s umbrella, with mild-ales such as the sweet, caramel-esque Eye Patch Ale to a few higher-gravity options, like the double IPA Blind Pirate. MNB brewery tours and beer tastings are every Monday, Thursday and Saturday, each day varying by time. $10 will get you a souvenir glass, six complimentary tastings and a tour. Don’t forget to bring a necktie to add to their growing Wall of Ties, this saves you $1 off admission. 16 : July 3, 2014

NEXT, we have the Red Brick Brewing Company formerly known as the Atlanta Brewing Company, Atlanta’s oldest craft brewery. After the brewery underwent managerial changes in 2005, the company launched its revamped version of laughing Skull, featuring the Vortex’s iconic logo. From a former bartender’s perspective, I highly recommend this amber ale. laughing Skull pours a gorgeous, smooth-bodied ocher complete with just the right off-white head. You will not be disappointed with its mild bitterness, balanced malt and crisp finish. Red Brick’s touring schedule consists of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, along with Saturdays and Sundays, all times varying. Red Brick offers an array of activities including trivia, live music and naturally, tastings. Their beautiful tasting room and spacious atmosphere are also perfect for hosting summer parties or birthday celebrations. If you don’t have anything to celebrate, other than the fact that your work week was a rough one, then Red Brick is still the place for you. $10 buys you a souvenir glass and four beer sampling tickets.

THIRDLY, Red Hare Brewing Company is the first brewery in Georgia to can their craft beer. Quite a ballsy move when you think about it, but everyone loves popping open a can of Bud light, so why not a great local craft? Red Hare also cans all three of their year-round beers. You know you wanna be the coolest kid around drinking one of these babies. Red Hare’s tours run regularly through each tasting. You can even bring along your four-legged friend for a sample as long as you keep them leashed; however, I am not sure if there is a legal drinking age for dogs. Similar to the aforementioned breweries, Red Hare charges $10 for a souvenir glass complete with six sampling tickets. Tours are Thursday through Saturday by varying times.

LASTLY but certainly not yeastly (ha!), can we get a keg roll for Sweetwater Brewing Company? Deemed one of the largest and most popular breweries in Atlanta, Sweetwater’s products are distributed all around the state of Georgia and even surrounding states. Their flagship stock 420 is an awardwinning extra pale ale full of happenin’ hop.. What sets Sweetwater apart is not just their lively sociable atmosphere complete with live music, Fox Bros BBQ catered events or tastings on Sundays, but it is their eco-friendly attitude. The manufacturer’s trucks are about as green as it gets with a cleaner exhaust coming out than going in. Sweetwater ships over 10 million pounds of leftover grain to local farmers and operates under a wastewater management system. Heck, even their packaging is recyclable. Sweetwater’s tour schedule is every Wednesday through Sunday at various times. Souvenir cups are $10 with an additional six sampling tickets. However, you can also skip the souvenir cup and sample the beer for free.

Although the peach state is not formally known for its microbrewery scene, Atlanta is certainly helping to put Georgia on the map. Therefore, instead of going to another BYOB cookout, car-pool to one of these local establishments. The tours can be a fun, learning experience and hey, who doesn’t love free beer? If you are interested in more of Atlanta’s breweries, in addition to the ones listed here, then check out atlantabeertours.com. They offer private group or open tours, allowing you to hit several stops around the metro area in one day. Remember to drink responsibly and happy brewery hopping!

DRIVING TO AN

ISLAND D. David kinney, Digital Editor

No summer could possibly be complete without a trip to the beach, and without a doubt one of the best things about living in Atlanta is being centrally located in the South. So we're taking a look at some of our favorite sandy island spots that are within driving distance from Atlanta. From the Cape Fear Coast in North Carolina to the sunny and warm beaches of Florida, this list has us ready to pack a bag and hit the highway on a summertime beach getaway.

Tybee Island, Georgia Drive Time: 4 Hours Did you know that Tybee Island is the easternmost point in the state of Georgia? This island beach is incredibly popular thanks to its proximity to Savannah and the relatively short drive time from Atlanta. Walking down the beach it isn’t uncommon to see a familiar face here and there. You may even see Paula Deen who owns a house in Tybee that’s available to rent. In fact, renting a house for your stay at Tybee is a great way to experience Georgia island life.

If you want to experience an incredibly fun event on the water check out the Tybee Floatilla “Float for loggerheads” event on July 20. Tybee Floatilla organizes unique tubing adventures and this special edition benefits the Tybee Marine Science Center. Tubers are shoving off in their floats at 10:30 a.m. and should arrive at The Crab Shack at around 2 p.m. for their return to terra firma.

simply relaxing by the pool, this property has everything you could possibly want during your summer beach trip.

St. Simons Island, Georgia Drive Time: 5 Hours known as one of the best island beaches in America, St. Simons Island is a peaceful retreat and the perfect weekend getaway. If you're looking for a world-class experience book a room at The king and Prince Beach and Golf Resort. From playing 18 holes on their award-winning par 72 golf course to

20 : July 3, 2014

If you're looking for an adventure head toward Pier Village and Neptune Park near the southern tip of St. Simons Island. You'll find the island's beautiful lighthouse that stands at 104 feet tall and was built in 1872. If you hear voices, don’t worry, you’re not going crazy as the lighthouse is reportedly haunted. The story starts with Frederick Osborne who was the lighthouse caretaker in 1880 along with his assistant John Stephens. Together they kept the lighthouse operating 24-hours day and their families even shared the lighthouse keeper’s home. However, two families under one roof rarely goes well. One day Osborne addressed Stephens wife in an inappropriate way and Osborne was shot and killed. Bam! Now it’s haunted. Today you can take a tour of the lighthouse and even climb the stairs to the top. It provides an incredible view.

Amelia Island, Florida Drive Time: 5 Hours Head to this beautiful seaport in the northeast coast of Florida for 13-miles of white sand beaches and crystal clear water. If you’re looking for a resort in the area consider the Omni Amelia Island Plantation Resort. The property recently enjoyed an $85 million facelift and guests are raving about the experience. However, what keeps people coming back to Amelia Island and the Omni year after year is the golf. There are two world-class golf courses located at the hotel. Oak Marsh

(designed by Pete Dye) and Ocean links (designed by Bobby Weed) share a pro shop on-site. Additionally, located just a mile and a half down the road, golfers can enjoy the resort’s members’ course long Point. Even if you’ve never hit a golf ball in your life you can still get in on the fun. Private instruction is available from the resort’s pro shop and costs $60 per half hour. After all of that time working on your golf game you’ll inevitably need a little rest and relaxation. So head to the Omni Amelia Island’s fullservice spa and salon. From a stylish new hairdo to a rejuvenating massage, they’ll have you feeling good-as-new and possibly wanting to extend your vacation by a few more days.

Kure Beach, North Carolina Drive Time: 6.5 Hours This is a classic Carolina beach town nestled on an island near the North and South Carolina border. When you're planning your trip, skip the hotel search entirely and rent a beachfront home while you're here. The experience is completely different and really fun if you have multiple people coming along. You can find properties available to rent by reaching out to local real estate agencies. Whether you want to stay a week or just a weekend, odds are you'll find what you're looking for here. However, you need to look early. Things book up quickly during the summer months. Whatever you do don't miss the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. It isn't as large as the Georgia aquarium, but it is definitely worth a visit. The local marine biologists working at the aquarium are incredibly passionate and their aquariums are top-notch. You can even sign up to take a class where experts teach everything from crabbing to caring for sharks.

When you’re ready to bust a move and enjoy a cocktail, follow the local gays into the city of Wilmington and check out the Ibiza Nightclub. It’s always going strong on the weekends and has a fun and diverse crowd. On your way there stop by Fish Bites Fresh Market & Seafood Restaurant for some of the best food in the area. The owner is a local seafood aficionado and only serves freshly caught items. Everything I’ve tried from there has been absolutely incredible.

Beauty

Men,

Mollusks & Medicine D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

Would you let a dozen snails squirm around your face in the name of beauty? You may laugh, but some of the best spas in the world are charging top dollar for their slimiest snails. So we asked Atlanta’s Dr. T. Douglas Gurley about the snail craze and how you can look your best this summer.

“There were snail farms in Chile for the French food industry, and they noticed that the snail farmers’ had great hands,” Dr. Gurley reveals during a recent interview, “So people started doing studies on the snail and found it has super anti-aging properties. Now snails have become very popular, and some spas are indeed putting live snails on you and having them crawl around your face for an hour.” The mucus from this mollusk contains proteins, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. It’s a super skin trio that can reduce the depth of wrinkles and improve your skin’s elasticity and firmness leaving you with younger looking skin. But don’t worry. Dr. Gurley assured us that you don’t have to get slimed (as if it’s Nickelodeon in the 90s) to get the benefits of the snail slime. You can simply pick up a bottle of Snailas by Sesderma from his office. Dr. Gurley only offers products that he has approved and refuses to offer any cosmetic product unless there is outside clinical evidence that it is both safe and effective. One of the reasons Dr. Gurley is excited about the Sesderma products is because the product line utilizes nano and liposomal technology. “Most skincare products stay in the upper layers of the epidermis because the large molecules in creams, lotions and serums are too big to penetrate natural skin barriers,” Dr. Gurley explains to patients, “So they literally sit on top of the skin where light, heat and air basically destroy most of the active ingredients. Sesderma pioneered an amazing technology to solve this problem. Through the use of nano and liposomal technology, active ingredients are delivered into the [deeper] levels of the skin where they can

22 : July 3, 2014

escape the oxidizing effects of light, heat and air and do the most good.” It’s a revolutionary product, however, Dr. Gurley also pointed out that it works best in concert with other cosmetic strategies. Everything kind of works together,” he says, “Botox is still important and another important one is stem cells. We have stem cell topicals that work very well.” However, creams, lotions and serums can’t do everything. So Dr. Gurley also utilizes state-of-the-art technology in his practice to provide more intensive treatments. One such treatment, Coolsculpting by Zeltiq, is especially popular during this time of the year. The non-invasive procedure freezes up to 25 percent of body fat off your stomach and love handles. If you’re healthy but still have a little stubborn belly fat this may be a good option for you. “It is exactly for that type of person,” Dr. Gurley confirms, “If you just have a little bulge from fat.” However, make sure you plan ahead because you can’t do it right before an event and expect to see results. “It takes about two months to get the effect from the procedure,” he details. If the gym isn’t giving you the results you want this may be an attractive option for you. Above all, staying healthy both on the inside and outside is important. One of the best ways to do that is to find a great doctor. “The main thing is you have to find a doctor that is educated and willing to fight for you,” Dr. Gurley concludes, “All doctors are different. You won’t get the same health care everywhere. So you need to find someone who understands your issues.”

“You better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone, oh the times they are a-changing.” - Bob Dylan in “The Times They Are A-Changin’

You’ve known for years that one you’d be the HBIC, and it looks like that day is coming sooner rather than later. However, the stars aren’t going to dumb success into your lap and walk away whistling. Keep your eyes out for room to advance and take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves. You’ve got this. You’ve just got to do it.

Yes, we all know that you had a master plan and that things aren’t going quite right. But “Things Fall Apart.” Outside influences have been and will continue to steer you toward paths you never imaged, however, you’ve got to adapt to get lost in the current of change. The stars are pointing you toward Chinua Achebe’s masterful historical fiction for wisdom.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] “To be popular, I’ll help you be popular! You’ll hang with the right cohorts. You’ll be good at sports, know the slang you’ve got to know. So let’s start cause you’ve got an awfully long way to go.” - “Popular” from “Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz” People like to tell us how to be, but don’t pay them any mind. Whether you want to be a good witch or a bad… well… you just focus on being you. Great things are coming your way if you stay true to yourself. Look for financial opportunity during the last two weeks of July.

You just might learn more in those conversations than you would pouring over thousands of TPO reports in your cubicle.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – MAR. 20]

“All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.” - The Beatles in “All You Need Is Love”

“You shake my nerves and your rattle my brain, too much love drives a man insane. You broke my will, oh what a thrill. Goodness gracious, great balls of fire.” - Jerry Lee Lewis in “Great Balls Of Fire”

Whether it’s a summer fling or a storied love, the stars will provide so that your love life will prosper. Enjoy the heat of summer as it translates into the bedroom as the fiery planet crosses your orbit. You may be tempted to fret over the trivial problem of the day, but ignore it and enjoy the fact that all you need really is love.

There is a carnal energy surrounding you as Mercury continues to move in its long orbit. You’re craving juicy cuts of meat on the grill and in the bedroom. If you’re already found love be wary of letting this energy control you or watch out for trouble in the third week of July. Your confidence at work will rise in the weeks ahead look for the benefits coming your way.

You may feel vulnerable walking your own path in life, but the stars are in your corner of the universe. If there were ever a time for you to say what you think and go after what you want out of life it is right now. Summer showers will darken your stoop here and there, but they’re short lived. You’ll weather the storm and best of all you have the strength to do it your way.

Sing that like a mantra over and over ‘cause it is working for you! The stars are perfectly aligned for you over the next few weeks. So take advantage of it while you can. From financial gain and surprising opportunities at work to making great new friends, you’re going to have a fun and rewarding summer if you remain open to it.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

Taurus [APR. 20 – MAy 20]

“Don’t settle for less even the genius asks questions.” - 2 Pac in “Me Against The World”

“Shot gun, aimed at my heart, you got one. Tear me apart and then some. How do we call this love?” - Rixton in “Me And My Broken Heart”

Just because someone tells you something is so doesn’t mean it has to be that way forever. If you want something now is the time for you to stand up and take it. The stars are aligned for you and luck is on your side. Take advantage of this before the heavenly bodies move past in the weeks ahead.

A rocky time in a relationship can leave you on the other side with a stronger bond or a brawl and a bridge burnt. What happens over the next few weeks is up to you. The stars have put adversity in your path, but how you weather it depends on how you act when you confront it. Look for financial opportunity in late July.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21] “The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath.” - Led Zeppelin in “The Battle of Evermore” Venus is crossing your path and it will likely have you on edge over the next two weeks. Take caution to keep cool under pressure and don’t create any situations that can’t be controlled later on. It may feel personally satisfying to let a sharp tongue free, but the consequences won’t be worth it in the end.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] “Why you gotta be so rude? Don’t you know I’m human, too?” MAGIC! in “Rude” The stars are crossed and it’s likely to mess with your emotions over the next two weeks. Don’t let your feelings get hurt when people are rude. Turn that frustration into motivation and personal success that you can enjoy for years to come. A friend will likely turn to you for support over the next two weeks. Don’t let your own emotions overshadow your ability to be a good friend.

Holler Poodles!! I came across this on a friend’s page yesterday and it was just what I needed in the moment. It caught me so off guard in it’s simplicity but spoke directly to my heart. “Be brave. Even if you’re not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. Don’t allow the phone to interrupt important moments. It’s there for your convenience, not the callers. Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. That’s where the fruit is. Don’t burn bridges. You’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river. Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated. Don’t major in minor things. Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Helen Keller, Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. Don’t spread yourself too thin. Learn to say no politely and quickly. Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved. Don’t waste time grieving over past mistakes Learn from them and move on. Every person needs to have their moment in the sun, when they raise their arms in victory, knowing that on this day, at his hour, they were at their very best. Get your priorities straight. No one ever said on his death bed, ‘Gee, if I’d only spent more time at the office’. Give people a second chance, but not a third. Judge your success by the degree that you’re enjoying peace, health and love. Learn to listen. Opportunity sometimes knocks very softly. Leave everything a little better than you found it. Live your life as an exclamation, not an explanation. Loosen up. Relax. Except for rare life and death matters, nothing is as important as it first seems. Never cut what can be untied. Never overestimate your power to change others. Never underestimate your power to change yourself. Remember that overnight success usually takes about fifteen years. Remember that winners do what losers don’t want to do. Seek opportunity, not security. A boat in harbor is safe, but in time its bottom will rot out. Spend less time worrying who’s right, more time deciding what’s right. Stop blaming others. Take responsibility for every area of your life. Success is getting what you want. Happiness is liking what you get. The importance of winning is not what we get from it, but what we become because of it. When facing a difficult task, act as though it’s impossible to fail.” — H. Jackson Brown Jr. Love and lashes,

Nothing says summer quite like the sweet, smoky taste of good BBQ. Sure, it's fun to grill it yourself, but sometimes it's just easier- not to mention tasty - to go out for some fantastic BBQ. Luckily Atlanta has plenty of places to satisfy your hankering for some juicy meat. Sweet Auburn Barbecue

Fat Matt's Rib Shack 1811 Piedmont Avenue ne, Atlanta, GA 30324

656 n. Highland Ave ne, Atlanta, GA 30306

Heirloom Market BBQ 2243 Akers mill rd. Atlanta, GA 30339

Daddy Dz BBQ Joynt 264 memorial Dr Se, Atlanta, GA 30312

It started out as a popular food truck, and recently opened its flagship location in the Poncey-Highlands. the flavor is distinctly Southern, but does have influences of a more contemporary cuisine making the eatery on north Highland a very popular spot - especially on fridays and Saturdays when the generous bar area becomes the perfect hangout to start a night on the town. the entire menu is delicious, but we highly recommend the texas Sandwich, the Southern Seoul (classic BBQ with Asian influences, yum!) and any of their sizable sample plates. If you have room for dessert the Bourbon Pecan Pie is awesome and great to share. sweetauburnbbq.com

Don’t let the rundown exterior fool you - you get some of the best BBQ in town at this shack! The restaurant has been featured on the Food Network, was named one of the best places to eat by USA Today and has received awards from both the New York Times and Rolling Stone Magazine. You’ll understand why this place has been so frequently recognized when you try their out-ofthis-world ribs, BBQ Plate or their amazing Que Wraps - barbecued pork in bitesized bits of dough that are deep-fried. You simply can’t resist it… daddydz.com

Right on Piedmont sits another great ‘shackstaurant’ - and again don’t let the exterior fool you because this place serves up some mean, finger-licking good ribs. And with a daily schedule of local bands, you can even get a little party going while enjoying their incredible BBQ. Of course, you should try their ribs (it’s on their sign, duh!), but if you have a larger appetite or decide to revisit the pork sandwich it is also fantastic. Don’t forget to save some room for one of their sides (how about rum baked beans, potato salad or Brunswick Stew?) that are simply amazing. fatmattsribshack.net

If you don’t mind communalstyle dining, where different parties of guests sit close to one another, Heirloom Market is a great choice for BBQ. It’s especially good if you’re a fan of traditional BBQ served up alongside decidedly untraditional but ever so tasty sides like glazed Korean sweet potatoes and cucumberradish salad. Whether you go for the sandwich or the combo platter, all of Heirloom Market’s meats are smoked to perfection and and will have you coming back for more. The are many favorites on this menu, but we definitely recommend the brisket. Or the pulled pork. And the ribs. And the chicken is amazing! Ok, you get the picture… heirloommarketbbq.com
