How To Style Up Your Look With Tank Tops

Call To Arms The tank top is taken directly from sportswear, which is why it is most often worn very relaxed with a pair of shorts – easy, breezy, beach wear! H&M printed tank, $10

Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director | Photos: PR There's a new tee in town. Or rather it's not a t-shirt since it's missing the two things that literally put the “T” in t-shirt: both sleeves! The tank top has been gaining ground on the t-shirt for the past few years – and with good reason, because it's just as stylish as a t-shirt, (if possible) even more comfortable and you can much better showcase those endless hours at the gym getting that perfect tone and mass to your arms. But does a tank top go with anything other than shorts? Sure, it does – and here's how. Dapper Up! The arm-bearing look isn't just for the beach. Why not dress up your tank top with fitted shorts and dressier shoes – suddenly your tank looks a lot less athletic and more dapper. Parke & Ronen Tank Top, $90 Hit The Town In Style Why not wear your tank top as you would a good t-shirt or dress shirt; with a blazer? The two will counterbalance each other making you look both dressy and casual enough for just about any night out on the town! Asos Slim Fit Plaid Blazer, $142 Asos Bound Edge Tank, $11

12 : July 31, 2014

Did You Know... The tank top is actually named after one-piece bathing suits with no sleeves from the 1920s. They were originally used for swimming in pools or tanks. The reference isn’t a military tank as many believe, but a tank of water!

Solids or Stripes? As a rule you should alternate solids and patterns. So, if your blazer is plaid go with a solid tank, and if your jacket is unicolor you can go crazy with the tank underneath. Selected Shandrew Tank Top, $20 21 Men Basic Tank Top, $4

DR.A.G.’s next Chapter Preeminent Book on Drag Re-launches to Bookstores By tim larcombe

CHRIsTOPHeR LOGAn’s

fascination with drag began fresh out of acting school. While working odd jobs and waiting tables in lA to make ends meet, he met a few friends who were involved in the Hollywood drag scene. they encouraged him to put on a wig and gown and enter his first drag contest. He won, of course, and for the next five years, starred in cabaret and club gigs. The shows fulfilled his need to perform, helped line his pockets with money, and eventually even landed him his first movie role in the nia Vardolas drag comedy Connie And Carla. From that role, he met most of the performers featured in his first book. the new edition of dr.a.g, with twenty never-before-seen images added is available at bookstores now. 14 : July 31, 2014

Photos clockwise from upper left: Raja by Peter Palladino, nina Flower by norman Dillon, lady Bunny by Peter Palladino and Jaylene tyme by nicholas Jang.

What inspired you to create dr.a.g.? I had written a film on drag and was looking for a way to fund it. I’d seen so many friends and indie producers not end up liking their final film, because they had made concessions along the way for funding and grants. their actual message got skewed bit by bit along the way. I wanted to find a way that the money for the film came from people who enjoyed the subject matter. the book raises funding for the film and at the same time, creates awareness of it, and hopefully an audience eager to see it. How did you choose the images for the book? I contacted everyone through Facebook. I’d see a photo I liked or a performer I respected and drop them a note asking if they’d be interested in being in a book. Performers connected me with their photographers, and the photographers always had better options from the shoots that had never been seen before. the book’s quality and level just

kept rising and rising with each new artist. What we ended up getting was far and above the original expectations. Were the photographers eager to have their photos added to the book? Yes. Everyone I contacted was into the project. I think they appreciated my interest in their work. I was approaching artists because I was taken with their art. It’s the best place to start when approaching an artist. Who are the top photographers of drag today? there are a number of top photographers and they all have very distinct styles. Austin Young, who shot our cover of Jeffree star, has a brightly-colored pop pin-up style with edge. Magnus Hastings embraces sensuality and glamour but in a vibrant and exciting way. Peter Palladino takes performers on a journey and creates some stunning tableaulike effects. His image of Raja featured in the

book, a tribute to ‘Attack of the 50Foot Woman’, is a fine example.

second chance to get this book out to the world.

Did you discover any new talent? I did! I found Ann Brown whose images are gorgeous straight on beauties. they are classic yet with a quirky sensibility. I also fell in love with William Dick’s highly polished images and Dusti Cunningham’s quirky and unexpected photos that bend towards old Hollywood.

How did you choose the additional images for the second edition? A few were images that fell through the cracks the first time around. Either we couldn’t clear the right photos or had missed connections. When Yara Sofia signed on, I was so taken with the vibrancy of her images, I asked if she had any recommendations for other performers from Puerto Rico. through her and photographer Edwin Irizarry, we connected with Queen Bee Ho and Valeria Mendez, who are two of the new faces in this edition.

Do you have a favorite image in the book? One of my personal favorites is the image of Jimmy James as Marilyn Monroe that graces the book’s back cover. It was shot by toronto photographer Walter Melrose and is stunning in its silvery simplicity. These photographers can shoot anything. Why do they choose to focus on drag queens? I’m sure they all have different reasons but with make up and costuming, drag is built for the camera and the lights. Every twitch and subtle facial expression pops that much more. Every inch is amplified. What image from the original release of dr.a.g attracted the most attention? the cover shot seems to get the most notice. It’s simple and elegant at the same time. Others mentioned often are Eddie Edwards as Barbra streisand and larry Edwards as tina turner. One of the most interesting reactions is Kenneth Blake as Madonna. Maybe because they are ‘over-Madonna’ed’, gay men push right past it. straight women, however, stop, stare and fawn over it. What did you learn from the initial release of dr.a.g? The first release taught me there’s much more work to do after you’ve made something beautiful, and that it’s the work that will get you through. When the original publisher went out of business, I thought it was the final chapter for dr.a.g. something in me decided to pick up the phone and start mailing copies to stores around the Us and Canada. It was that push that led to a new distributor stepping forward to take me on for a relaunch of the book. I’m so very grateful to have a

How has the art of drag evolved through the years? Early drag was more about poking fun at celebs. today’s drag is about being a celeb in your own right. Drag has always been and will always be about pushing boundaries. Why do you think drag has become so popular in recent years? “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has a lot to do with it. the level of exposure from the show has really gotten the images of drag performers out to people who never crossed paths with it before. What do you hope readers come away with after viewing the images in dr.a.g? I hope they come away with a greater respect for drag. What’s next? I’m working hard on my next book in the series called BURlEsQUE. A companion piece to drag, it will feature the world’s top burlesque stars. let’s just say the women give the men in drag a run for their money. Visit Bookthefilm.com.

Queen of Queens:

Shavonna

Brooks By D. David Kinney

16 : July 31, 2014

Sitting silently in a pew in the glorious house of the almighty a young child saw drag for the very first time, Ms. Toni. She was mesmerizing and instantly captured the curious child’s attention. It was there, in the presence of God himself, that Atlanta’s Shavonna B. Brooks first encountered drag and the spark behind her career as a performer was eternally lit.

Photography: Toby justtoby.me Model: Chad Wick Art Direction & Styling: Josh Murtha & Mikkel Hyldebrandt

“I was very young, and it was at church,” Shavonna explains about seeing Ms. Toni for the first time, “I was like yes ‘cause I love the Lord.” But it was more than just her love of God that got Shavonna excited that day. “I saw what could one day be me,” she reveals, “When I was younger I wanted to be a variety of things. But, no matter what, I saw me doing it as a girl.” Fast-forward to today and Shavonna B. Brooks is one of the best drag entertainers in Atlanta, and she was recently crowned the winner of FENUXE’s annual Queen of Queens competition. The event was held at Burkhart’s Pub this year and both the performers and audience had a lot of fun. The competition consists of two rounds. In the first round all of the contestants perform one song and the top three performers are selected based on applause. Then the top three contestants each perform a second song and FENUXE’s panel of judges selects the winner. Last year Shavonna also competed in the Queen of Queens competition and she came incredibly close to winning. However, this year she pulled out all of the stops and won the crown with showstopping performances of “Sovereign’s Song” and Jennifer Holliday’s “In The Mood”. When asked about her victory Shavonna humbly points out that all of the performers in the competition are incredibly talented. Additionally, after recently returning from a few months of performing in Las Vegas, Shavonna says, “It was great to be back in the dressing room with a variety of the Atlanta drag community,” she remarks about the event, “We had a fantastic time. They were all good sports!” Shavonna is no stranger to traveling for bookings. In fact, she has some exciting plans taking her to Columbia, South Carolina in September. “I’ll be at

The Comedy House with my sister Dorae Saunders,” Shavonna announces. You may remember Dorae from her time as a contestant on season three of “America’s Got Talent”. She lit the stage on fire with her rendition of Tina Turner’s cover of “Proud Mary” winning over the judges and audience. In addition to putting on a great show together they’re also good friends. “Dorae also spoils me and cooks for me,” Shavonna reveals with a playful laugh. Even with all of the traveling, Shavonna has a large and loyal fan base here in Atlanta - especially at Burkhart’s Pub. She calls the neighborhood bar her “Atlanta Home Bar”. “I’m now in the Femme Fatale show on Friday nights at 11 p.m. at Burkhart’s Pub,” she coyly says plugging her regular show, “I host with my sister Destiny.” If you’ve seen Shavonna on stage it isn’t hard to figure out why she’s so popular with Atlantans. She’s absolutely captivating when hosting or performing, she selects great music and she always makes sure to connect with the audience. One of the things she is also known for is her incredible lip-syncing ability. “I never do anything I don’t know,” Shavonna explains matter-of-factly, “It becomes easy if you fall in love with a song.” She also points out that makeup, dance moves, hair and the right outfit are all important. “But most of all personality,” she cheerfully says, “People like to be able to relate to the entertainer they’ve come to see. If they can’t connect they won’t be interested in you or the show. I connect with the audience by being myself. I’m very good at making sure people enjoy themselves.” Shavonna B. Brooks has worked hard to make her dreams come true and her career as an entertainer is the proof in the pudding. However, she’s only just hitting her prime right now. “Hopefully I will continue to entertain Atlanta now that I’m home and in between shows capture a few dreams,” she concludes, “We know not what the future holds.” FENUXE.COM : 17

URBAN CANNIBALS By Dustin shrader LIkE A pHOENIX RISINg from the ashes, Calavino Donati will not be held down. Along with her wife, Doria Roberts, Calavino owns Urban Cannibals Bodega & Bites; an east Atlanta corner store with a four by sixfoot kitchen where she turns her fantastic entrees into sandwich creations, while Doria leads a widely popular social activism outreach through her baking and music.

18 : July 31, 2014

The two lovely ladies met eighteen years ago when Calavino was asked by her landlord to show Doria her apartment. Although the two lived within close proximity to each other, busy thriving careers never allowed for anything more than an acquainted friendship. “It wasn't until both our careers slowed down, became more manageable that we actually sat down for a cup of coffee. After that conversation we both saw the missing pieces. We walked away shaking our heads saying to ourselves respectively, 'Calavino???' 'Doria???'” Not long after the couple embarked on their epic romance, did things turn south for Calavino's business, The Roman Lily. The restaurant suffered as a result of the ongoing recession. With all of her assets tied up in the property market, Calavino was at a loss. Refusing to give up, Calavino and Doria made the brave decision to do whatever it took

to stay in the game. With that, Urban Cannibals was founded with nothing more than an unused George Foreman grill, two used refrigerators, two used electric hotpots and the sheer generosity of family and friends. Since its founding, Calavino and Doria have combined their separate talents of cooking and writing music respectively to create an atmospheric hotspot that is a staple to the community. In addition to the many attributes Urban Cannibals has given since it's inception, Doria has developed Farm To Ear, a musical tour highlighting her gifted abilities of being a musician along with serving up Calavino's original concoctions all the while promoting their message of sustainability, food access and food production for local communities. Calavino and Doria will be celebrating Doria's birthday at her 12th Annual Birthday Party Show benefit the Giving Kitchen. The show will be held Saturday, August 9th at the Variety Playhouse.

Since then, Patric has wedded his longtime partner and consulted here and there while taking a brief break from the daily routine of a restaurant kitchen. Only in December of 2012 did he procure the head chef title at the popular eatery, The Barrelhouse. Owned by Phillip Christensen, James Brooks, managed by Tara Christensen, Patric rounds out the team with his vivacious personality and tasty libations which fill the restaurant's revolving menu. The Barrelhouse provides the perfect atmosphere for anyone wanting to escape the humdrum of hectic schedules, meetings and all around stress.

Speaking of what he loves about The Barrelhouse, Patric explains that besides having Sundays off (laughs to himself) he enjoys the laidback feel and the people he works with. “It's always cool to work with people who have

I get bored easily, so you have to keep yourself interested. We'll have late summer, fall, winter then spring menus. It's as seasonal as we can make it.”

Chris's passion for baking began to spark at an early age while assisting in the family kitchen. As he got older, Chris found he had a knack for all things mathematical and chemistry-related. “When I was younger I was hooked on a television show called 'Great Chefs' and I also had a fascination with science and chemistry. It was expected that I attend a fouryear institution, so I did; majoring in environmental engineering.”

Ultimately deciding environmental engineering wasn't for him, Chris considered a veterinary career. While managing a kennel, he realized eventually owning his own place felt right. It was time for him to get back to his roots. For example, I enjoy making and working with breads and candies.” Chris's zeal for such a scientific technique and loving niche for baked goods allows for a decadent menu, each delectable delight measured in precision and perfection.

it is no surprise that his passion for cooking resonated from family values. His Signature Chicken & Waffles is what people are really rushing out for lately. Originally only known to locals who frequent 10th & Piedmont, this ingenious take on a southern classic is made with a juicy piece of chicken that’s marinated in buttermilk, hot sauce, onions, garlic, salt and pepper. The tender chicken is then covered in apple wood smoked bacon and baked in the oven. After this portion of the magical masterpiece is completed, Javier then dips the bacon-wrapped chicken concoction into his homemade waffle batter in order to be fried to a golden perfection. The chicken & waffles on a stick is served with a trio of dipping sauces: hot sauce, powdered sugar and North Georgia sorghum syrup.

Atlanta’s reputation for being a city that can only be navigated by car is rapidly waning. Although Atlanta is still a car city - who would deny that the urban network is undergoing a remarkable transformation. Right now Atlanta is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. It has been cited as the number one city people are moving to and not from, and overall it seems that times for the unofficial capital of the south are good. Really good. Even though most would claim that the major development is taking place in the suburbs surrounding Atlanta, there is also major change happening in the heart of the city. And a very visible one at that. Since the opening of the first stretch of the Atlanta Beltline in 2012 the combination trail, rail and park space is putting its lasting impression on the metropolitan cityscape. For those skeptics who claim that the 22 miles of pedestrian and bike-friendly trail is nothing but a fancy bike path, there are several other prospects surrounding this vast infrastructure project that have proved that the BeltLine is having a much greater impact on Atlanta. Because not only is the Beltline a means of transportation, but it effectively re-connects the city’s neighborhoods while turning condemned land, which used to be a rail corridor, into sustainable and green spaces. Quite a feat for a city normally associated with the pitfalls of vast urban sprawl that can only be accessed by car.

FENUXE.COM : 25

Program Director of the Atlanta Beltline, Lee Harrop, chimes in on the positive impact of the Beltline on Atlanta’s in-town areas: “It’s sparked a new era of intown economic growth and vibrancy that the city hasn’t seen since the Olympics,” he explains, “Like a lot of cities, Atlanta didn’t see a lot of development during the recession. But as the economy has started to recover, we’ve seen tremendous development along the Atlanta BeltLine.” One of the most important points according to Lee Harrop is that the Beltline has re-connected neighborhoods that were once physically divided by the railroad. As an example, after just a few years of having the Beltline, Midtown and Virginia Highlands are now seamlessly re-joined with the Old Fourth Ward just like the areas West End, Westview and Grant Park have been invisibly interwoven again. It’s probably not solely due to the success of the Beltline, but there is no denying the positive impact that the Beltline has had on Atlanta. That impact also carries with it a social aspect, which can not only be seen but felt as you move through Atlanta’s Midtown: Joggers, bikers and pedestrians are no longer confined to the city parks, but can venture outside the ‘Midtown bubble’ in a safe and accessible way. It seems like the Beltline is not perceived as merely a means of getting around, but a destination in itself. In fact, this is backed up by the multiple social and cultural activities that have arisen surrounding the beltline. The initiative is headed by the Art on the BeltLine 26 : July 31, 2014

program and started with the annual Lantern Parade in September - an event that last year attracted more than 10,000 participants. Another great project, which will undeniably become a very visible champion of our changing city is Atlanta Streetcar. So far, the about three miles of rails have been laid out in midtown and downtown where there were previously streetcar tracks, and the streetcars have been purchased. So, it is only a matter of time before Atlantans will have yet another (and greener) alternative in the network

of metropolitan public transportation. The streetcar will initially fill in missing circulation and connectivity between midtown and downtown. However, future development plans include expanding the rail network to other parts of the city. So, does a new streetcar system and the expanding Beltline mean that Atlanta is moving in a greener direction? Lee Harrop is convinced of it: “Absolutely. As part of [the Beltline’s]

first seven years of implementation we’ve already cleaned up 200 acres of contaminated land, most of which is now greenspaces and trails with thriving landscapes and ecosystems,” he elaborates, “Over 1000 trees have been planted along our trails and parks in partnership with Trees Atlanta. Atlanta is launching a bike-share program. We’re seeing the emergence of more transit options.” The fruits of which can already be seen as more intowners park their cars and become bike commuters instead. In fact, work has already begun on connecting the Beltline with the new streetcar system for even more effective transit options for commuters. As Atlanta enters this new phase of growth and sustainability it will be exciting to see just how much the urban culture of the city will change. Will Atlanta be able to keep on it’s track to smarter and more urban development projects? Only time will tell, but with enterprises like Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market underway the future continues to look very bright. As far as the Beltline is concerned it will expand even

more this year with the new Gateway connection between the Eastside Trail and Historic Fourth Ward Park, and construction will start later in the year to extend the Eastside and Westside Trail as well as lay out a North Avenue Plaza trail, which will take you right past the new Ponce City Market. The masterplan for an ever-expanding Beltline is set to be completed in 2030. It will be very interesting to see if Atlanta commuters can one day ditch the car entirely!

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22]

Sometimes things are just better when shared – that goes for happy times, heartaches and sweet treats alike. Make sure you surround yourself with lots of friends and family in the beginning of the month. With all of these people around look for a sweet enlightenment on August 10 - maybe even with a romantic touch. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Birthday cake

virgo [AUg. 23 – SEpT. 22]

You seem to revel in the more sensuous side of life with senses sharpened and tuned in to every little taste, sound or touch around you. Whether you choose to use this advantage to go on lots of fun dates or for getting (a lot) closer to finding Mr. Right is entirely up to you - but on August 12 you could encounter someone who could make that decision for you… Sweet Treat of the Stars: Banana Split

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22] Just as the stars collide to create the perfect stellar alignment, it seems like a lot of minor issues are subtly falling into place in your life. You may not be aware of the fact that things are indeed looking up for you - except for that feeling of content and your insatiable sweet tooth for life. Look for a challenge on August 3 - it will be up to you whether it has positive or negative impact on your life. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Chocolate Mousse

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEB. 18] Espresso Crinkles are always cracked on top. It doesn’t matter how you make them they’re not going to have a smooth crust. But they don’t need one. Being cracked is okay sometimes. Life has thrown some hurdles your way recently, but you’re overcoming them and hopefully coming out stronger at the end. The stars may have you on a quest for perfection, but happiness will find you when you embrace your own imperfections. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Espresso Crinkles

PISCES [FEB. 19 – MAR. 20] The stars are sashaying their way to you with a heaping spoonful of love over the next couple of weeks. Bake it into a beautiful relationship and you’ll have something truly sweet on your hands. Extracts may be suitable shortcuts in the kitchen, but shortcuts in other areas of your life won’t turn out as tasty. You’ll need to have a serious conversation with a close friend over the next couple of weeks. Don’t be afraid of a little salt. Spilling a little on the floor won’t shut down the kitchen. Just don’t let it rain cause it will pour! Sweet Treat of the Stars: Amaretto Apple Streusel Cupcakes

ARIES [MAR. 21 – ApR. 19] Just because something sounds like it is going to turn out sour doesn’t mean you should immediately give up on it. You never know how sweet something can be until you do a taste-test. Mercury’s slow orbit will open up opportunities for you in the world of commerce, however, make sure you’ve got the ingredients to make these new opportunities a success. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Blueberry Tart

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

Everything is better with a big spoonful of sugar. Whether you’re trying to get the medicine to go down (with sugar? really?) or simply trying to turn around a negative situation, the way you approach it will make all of the difference. You don’t have to be fake or overly sugary sweet, but a little kindness will do you some big favors during the second week of August. Look out for a man with a dog that can change your life. Whether his changes are for the better is up to the stars and they’re not telling right now.

You may be destined for your own “Let them eat cake” moment over the next few weeks. The stars are shining good fortune down on you right now, however, remember that not everyone around you is enjoying such good luck. Taking a few moments to become self-aware certainly won’t hurt you in the end.

Sweet Treat of the Stars: Apple Fried Pie

Sweet Treat of the Stars: Blackberry Crumb Cake

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21] The stars will tease you with the comforts of your childhood home over the next few weeks as Venus continues on its path. Surround yourself with happy memories and embrace nostalgic thinking. However, all of those memories may cloud your judgment so watch out for people trying to take advantage of you. Specifically watch out for August 7. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Peach Cobbler

Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JAN. 19]

Taurus [ApR. 20 – MAY 20]

GemIni [MAY 21 – JUN. 22] It’s easy to become bored with classic staples, but there is a reason they persist. Try upgrading things that have become humdrum with a tiny hint of something exciting and exotic. A dash of spice in the right area of life over the next two weeks will produce incredibly positive results for you. Look toward the end of August for an opportunity to expand your social circle. Sweet Treat of the Stars: Tahitian Vanilla Bean Ice Cream Sandwich

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22]

The stars are tickling your funny bone and you’ve got the power to brighten everyone’s day if you embrace it. Sure you may come off as a little nutty, but your sweet personality completes the recipe and you’ve got a real chance of having a great couple of weeks ahead. Just be careful not to spend too much time focusing on the negative or any one particular person because you could easily get burnt.

Everyone knows that the best bananas for a tasty banana pudding are overripe. You could learn a lesson from this sweet treat. Don’t be afraid to let things play out. A situation will soon seemingly spiral beyond your control in early August, however, just like with the bananas it will be up to you to turn the overripe scenario into a satisfying treat.

Holler Poodles!! Return to 3 Flags Over Here (Pt 2). After my dear friend Selma B. Hole was thrown out released from the hospital, it took her a couple of hours days and a case box of wine to recuperate from her injuries. We returned 3 weeks later on a Sunday to continue our review of “3 Flags Over Here” in beautiful downtown Jonesboro. Naturally, we headed to the buffet first thing because we like to eat. They had some kinda restaurant combo like Waffle House+Huddle House+Out House combined. I’ve never seen food go through people so fast in my life. Because I couldn’t find an empty stall I’m a lady, I held it in. Big Mistake! Selma wanted to hear the children’s choir singing so she pushed her way through the tens of people crowd to see all the kids dressed in little white robes. It just so happens it was also the entrance to their version of the Sky Coaster called the Rim Shot. Selma begged for us to go on it. It’s that ride that’s like a bungee jump off a 10 story building and hang-gliding all in one. Needless to say, we were ill-prepared looking cute in our white mini skirts and matching tube tops. They hauled us up to the top with a crane while the voices of those little angels on the ground filled the air. The attendant yelled, “Pull the tab when you’re ready!” I told Selma I thought I was gonna hurl cause the food wasn’t sitting right, and she said she thought she was too. We asked to get down but they said the only way down was to pull the cord. So, Selma pulls the cord and I immediately start spewing out my mouth and unbeknownst to me, Selma starts spewing out her rear. All I could see as we made the initial pass over the little angels below was eggs, grits, ham, pancakes, hash browns and sausage raining all over the kids. But as we went backwards, Selma’s duty chute of destruction had managed to dive bomb a few of the kids and knock some of them out cold while the other children ran screaming off. Later, as we were washing up in the kiddie pool restroom, I could only laugh at the conversation between two ladies outside talking about the new “aerial water feature” she saw from a distance. Said it looked like The Bellagio’s dancing fountains. Selma almost swallowed her teeth. Next week is the final installment of my review! Until then… Love and lashes,

Nothing quite beats a good cup of coffee in the morning. Yet, finding the perfect cup of Joe can prove to be incredibly frustrating in Atlanta. There are a couple of great spots, but there is a deluge of mediocre java. This is why I’m excited to share with you my latest find here in the city that has completely revolutionized my caffeine fix - Bishops Coffee & Tea. Often times before or after leaving the gym I get a hankering for an espresso. So the other day when I was leaving Ansley Mall I happened upon Bishops Coffee & Tea across the street in the Clear Creek Center. It’s conveniently nestled underneath the new pizza restaurant, and it’s an ideal spot for an intimate Midtown coffeehouse. Whether you’re looking for a new spot for a romantic coffee date to impress the cute guy you met last weekend or simply looking for a pick-me-up before heading to Burkhart’s Pub nearby, the baristas at Bishops Coffee & Tea are truly maestros of mocha. The cute shop is owned by the coffee roasting goddess known as Bishop (like Madonna, Cher and Jack McFarland she goes by just Bishop). The Atlanta location is her fifth store. If you’ve grabbed a cup of coffee when you were in Pensacola over Memorial Day, you may have already tried her delicious brew. Bishop’s other stores are located throughout Florida and Alabama. “I’m originally from San Francisco so coffee is in my DNA, but I started really getting into coffee when I was thirteen,” Bishop tells me during a recent interview, “My dad and my grandfather introduced me to my first coffee roaster. Then from around seventeen to nineteen, I really honed my skills as a baker and coffee roaster.” However, there are a lot of coffee devotees out there. “What sets me apart from other typical coffee roasters 42 : July 31, 2014

is that I use electricity,” she reveals, “So I leave a smaller carbon footprint on the environment and the coffee has a low acidity profile no matter how light or dark you go.” All of the coffee served at Bishops Coffee & Tea is expertly roasted by Bishop herself, and she creates some fantastic blends. “I do four different types of espressos,” she explains, “I’ve got our typical house blend which you can get in any drink. But we also have the Blond Bombshell which is my secret recipe and it’s highly caffeinated. It’s like drinking Mt. Dew for espresso. It’ll get you going. We also have our Madame Noir which has hints of dark chocolate and tobacco. What’s wonderful about that particular espresso is that it’s great in a Cubano and does well in our mochas. And then I also have the Red-Headed Stepchild.”

Now that you’ve picked out your favorite coffee you’ve got a big decision to make. Do you stay and enjoy the relaxing and comfy chairs inside the shop, venture outside to the patio to listen to some great live jazz or jump back into your car and refuel on-the-go? It doesn’t matter what you choose. Trust me. The coffee is super tasty wherever you enjoy it! If you do want to zip in and out quickly you can take advantage of their ample parking. You never have to fight for a parking space here which is a luxury in itself. Additionally, you can save even more time ordering your morning, afternoon or evening (yep, they’re open well into the evening) coffees and baked treats with the Bishops Coffee & Tea app. It’s available on both the iTunes and Google Play store and allows you to order your coffee in advance so it’s ready whenever you are. It’s perfect for when you’re pressed for time, squeaking out a few seconds to stop and get a quick coffee. So give it a try and let me know what you think. I’m always on the look out for a great new spot in Atlanta!

If you’re selecting a blend based on caffeine content don’t be bashful about asking about the different coffees. The store even has a special shelf with all of the different varieties on display so that you can do a quick smell test on all of them to help pick your favorite. Additionally, you can ask the friendly baristas about how the coffee beans were roasted by Bishop. “The lighter roast has more caffeine and the medium to darker roast has more flavor, body and less caffeine,” she details, “Most people think it’s the opposite, but it’s not.” Owner, Bishop
