Has Beardie Gone Bye Bye? Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Grooming Director

Ah those fashion trends they are indeed devious. The minute a trend becomes mainstream it is abolished by those few that introduced it in the first place. Now, one of the most defining trends of the last few years, the full beard, may be seeing it’s own decline and it has us asking: Is it time to shave? It’s a known fact in fashion that the appeal of certain items diminish in line with how popular they are getting. This was the case with the man purses and platform shoes, and it seems to be the case with the full beard. Heralded five or six years ago as one of the greatest and most appreciated comebacks for men when Hollywood stars started letting the stubble grow, the trend trickled down to the fashionisto style set. Yet, now it seems that everyone sporting more than a downy upper lip is opting for the full hipster facial fuzz. And that might be exactly what kills it. When the beard trend surfaced it was mainly a reaction to two things. First, it was a way for men to reclaim some of that masculinity that had been sacrificed in the wake of the no-hair-out-of-place and polished-to-perfection metrosexual trend that dominated the first part of the 2000’s. Although most men reaped the benefits of actually taking good care of their skin and hair, they longed for a less emasculating way to express their manhood. And what better way to do that than to grow a beard - the ultimate symbol of masculinity reserved solely for the male human species! The other reason for growing a beard was a more romantic notion of ultra-masculinity in a world where defining what it means to be a man may not have been as easy as before. Combined with a plaid shirt a beard could be viewed as a throwback to a more authentic world as a kind of urban lumberjack far away from air-conditioned offices and high-speed Internet. 10 : August 14, 2014

In fact, the same romantic notion spawned the elaborate hipster movement where the basic principle – apart from growing an enormous and untamed ‘hipster beard’ – was to seek out everything non-mainstream and alternatively ‘authentic’. But apart from reclaiming masculinity and going full hipster what really seemed to surprise everyone was that facial hair looked great on most guys. So instead of being popular for a fashion season, beards became popular for a reason. Beards create balance in the face, they hide double chins and pudgy cheeks, and draw attention to your eyes and lips – they can, in fact, be much better than a facelift!

So, what do you do now that fashion seems to forego the trend for full facial hair? Do you keep on wearing your beard defiantly? Or do you shave to conform? Go for a compromise (don’t say goatee!)? The answer may not be an easy one. Your beard has literally grown to become a part of your face and shaving it is not a decision taken lightly. So, before you reach for the razor remember these wise words spoken by a true master of both fashion and style, Yves Saint Laurent, who famously said that “fashions fade, style is eternal”. Contrary to general belief fashion and style don’t always go together, and one can exist perfectly without the other. So, with that in mind: Are you going to shave?

An Alaskan Adventure D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

If there is one thing Southerners know how to handle it's hot weather. You won't find us shying away from an outdoor mall or foregoing a trip to Piedmont Park just because the heat index is grilling us. Still, resilient as we are, there is nothing quite as sweet as leaving the sweltering Georgia heat for an incredible wintry adventure. So this year I decided to cross a few items off of my bucket list with a trip to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Photos by D. David Kinney I was on a mission to taste the freshest wild salmon and King crab, snap a photo of humpback whales, fly to a glacier in a helicopter and happen upon some playful bears. However, if you want the full Alaska experience you’ve got to be flexible in how you travel. There was no way that I could see and do everything without incorporating travel by air, rail, boat and car. So planning the trip in advance was of paramount importance. Both Seattle and Vancouver are excellent places to start your trek into Alaska, and I ended up choosing Seattle for this trip. It’s an overly caffeinated slice of heaven, and it’s the perfect city for your transition from the extreme heat of Atlanta to the sometimes brisk chill of summertime in Alaska. If your plane lands during the day you’ll likely be fine in shorts and a shirt because the average high temperature in August is 75 degrees, but the evenings are decidedly cooler and typically fall to the mid-50s. So make sure you pack a light jacket (preferably waterproof to ward off any famous Seattle rain). Wanting to see some of the sights in Seattle before heading out to British Columbia and Alaska, I planned a day of sipping espresso, watching the fish fly at Pike Place Market and taking the elevators to the top of the Space Needle. It’s all super touristy, but it’s reliably good fun and worth checking out. Don’t miss the Gum Wall when you’re at the market. Just like the thousands of love birds who flock to Paris’ Pont des Arts footbridge to leave a ‘love lock’, thousands of funky culture lovers flock to the Gum Wall at the Pike Place Market to leave their masticated signature. It’s a completely disgusting but intoxicatingly beautiful community art piece. After soaking up the Seattle scene, I began the seafaring leg of my journey aboard the Grand Princess. In stark contrast to

24 : August 14, 2014

the bustling streets of Seattle, the Grand Princess is an oasis of serenity that sails through some of the most astonishing landscapes on Earth. Princess has seven different ships sailing in Alaska this year offering nine different itineraries that range from one week to two weeks in length. My advice is to skip the particulars of the individual ships and instead focus on the itinerary and route you prefer. When you book a cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas you’re most likely selecting your ship based on its amenities and ports of call. When you’re in Alaska the journey between the scheduled ports is just as important. For this reason, I suggest picking an Alaskan itinerary that navigates the Inside Passage. It’s a route through the islands off the coast of southeastern Alaska and western British Columbia. If you don’t take the Inside Passage you’ll see vast stretches of the beautiful Pacific Ocean and likely encounter a fair amount of ship roll - which can lead to seasickness. However, if you do take the Inside Passage you’ll be continually surrounded by snow capped mountains, have a better chance of seeing more wildlife and experience less roll. Luckily, six of Princess’ nine Alaska itineraries this year take the Inside Passage. Next you’ll need to decide whether you want your ship to travel the Tracy Arm Fjord or head a little further north to Glacier Bay (the largest UNESCO protected biosphere in the world). You can’t go wrong with either choice, so my travel crew and I picked Tracy Arm. It’s located approximately 45 miles south of Juneau and was designated by Congress in 1980 as the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness. A U.S. navy crewman named Ford famously paddled a boat into a waterway connecting the Tracy Arm Fjord to the Endicott Arm and got trapped in a tidal surge for six hours. Understandably, he was terrified and name Fords Terror stuck.

Rugged, steep mountains flank both sides of the ship as you make you way through Tracy Arm toward the South Sawyer glacier. Not only is the passageway incredibly narrow for such a large vessel, but the threat of icebergs becomes very real the closer you get to the glacier. In fact, depending on the time of year you’re travelling, the amount of icebergs that have calved off could prevent your ship from navigating the area at all. The cruise lines offer Alaska itineraries from April until September when the weather is warm enough to accommodate safe passage. After September there is simply too much ice to safely make the trip. Seeing your first iceberg truly makes the entire trip worthwhile. You’ll definitely see icebergs that are white and hopefully you’ll see some that are an intense shade of aqua blue. The older and more densely compacted the ice forms, the richer the blue color will appear. It’s an absolutely marvelous sight that unfortunately can only be seen by the naked eye. Photographs and videos can’t fully recreate the exact color. So you've got to see it for yourself to get the full experience. Our ship had an easy time navigating Tracy Arm as we had beautiful weather with no rain and plenty of sunshine, but it was still very cold. The temperature in Alaska, even during the summer, warrants wearing pants and a warm jacket, and you’ll want to bundle up even more as you get closer to the glacier. The further up Tracy Arm you go the colder it gets. When you arrive at the South Sawyer glacier the ship has gone as far in as it can go into the passage. The captain and the crew will then begin turning it around as you and your fellow guests snap dozens of photos of the icy wonder. Without a doubt the glacier is one of the most marvelous things I’ve ever seen in my life, however, watching the captain and his crew turn the massive cruise ship around in such tight quarters gave it a run for its money. The skill and expertise they demonstrate while steering through the tight fjord is quite impressive. While on our nautical jaunt we also stopped at ports in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. All three cities are unique with Juneau obviously being the largest. Ketchikan is the southeasternmost city in Alaska and is lovingly known as the “Salmon Capital of the World.” So naturally if you like salmon this is where you should try as much of it as you can. Fishing tours are very popular, but just remember that state regulations only allow sport fishermen to keep one salmon per person. If you’re more inclined to taste rather than catch, buy some fresh salmon on

your way to the outskirts of town to see the Native American totem poles. Ketchikan has the world’s largest collection of standing totem poles. If you’re in town during August and September when the salmon are running, don’t miss seeing the Ketchikan Creek and its salmon ladders. When Salmon are ready to spawn they leave the ocean and return to the river or creek where they were born. To help keep the salmon populations strong, salmon ladders are built at parts of the creek that the townspeople notice have become impassable for the fish. Water flowing downstream is diverted to go over a gently sloping series of steps. The salmon instinctively know what to do and they use their famous jumping skills to hop right up the steps and continue up the creek. It’s an awesome sight to see. Next on our itinerary we stopped at Juneau. There are plenty of tour operators here offering to take you on a tour of the tiny capital city. Yet, I wholeheartedly suggest skipping the city and the tour operators. They’re offerings are overpriced and you’ll have more fun charting your own path. Plus, the downtown area is really touristy and shuts down in the evening. So what do I suggest? Charter a helicopter and head twelve miles southeast to the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier. This is the absolute best way to experience the glaciers in a short amount of time. Seeing the glacier from the ship is fantastic, but soaring over to it for a walkabout is even better.

Every whale watching experience is different so you never know what to expect. But we were treated to an awe-inspiring show from a pod of humpback whales who were bubble net feeding. Underneath the water, the whales swim in a continually shrinking circle while blowing bubbles below a tasty school of fish. This scares the fish into forming a tight school and pushes them toward the surface. Then the whales charge toward the fish swallowing them in one big gulp as they explode from the water. Watching a mammal of that size work cooperatively with the rest of its pod to feed is absolutely magical. I’ve always loved whales and found them fascinating, but I’d never fully appreciated their size, power and ingenuity until that moment.

If you’re looking for an economical option you can easily hire a car to take you to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. From the comfort of the Visitor Center you can enjoy spectacular views of the glacier. If you’d like to get closer to the glacier there are numerous hiking trails in the area that are maintained by the Forest Service. Hiking to the water’s edge and being able to actually touch an iceberg that had calved off the glacier was quite a memorable experience. The whole trip to the Mendenhall Glacier only took us about two hours which gave us time for our whale watching tour later that evening.

From here it’s on to the tiny borough of Skagway located on the Alaska Panhandle. You may already be familiar with Skagway if you’re a fan of Jack London’s writing in “The Call of the Wild.” Skip the souvenir shops and head straight into the wild by buying a ticket on the White Pass & Yukon Route train. The railroad was built in the late nineteenth during the Klondike Gold Rush so that the miners could move themselves and their cargo easier, and it’s one of the most beautiful scenic railways in the world. For the best experience, take the route all of the way to the end to Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon. But make sure you have your passport on you because you’ll be in Canada, and they’re strict about proper identification at this border crossing.

The trip between the Mendenhall Glacier and the boat slip where the majority of the whale watching tours depart takes about twenty five minutes. So make sure you leave plenty of time to arrive if you’re taking a group tour. If you’re debating between a group tour and a private tour, I highly suggest the group tour. You’ll save a lot of money and if you pick the right boat you’ll only have one or two small groups joining you.

Hopefully I’ve given you a glimpse of the astonishing adventures waiting for you in Alaska and offered some suggestions that you would want to incorporate in your own trip. But, as always, I urge you to remember that it’s the small moments between the major sights that make a trip memorable. When I think back on my time in Alaska, it was the smiles and laughter from loved ones travelling with me that I remember most fondly.

Your skills of deception and manipulation are in peak form right now, however, watch out as the people around you begin to take notice. Your greatest asset could become your largest liability as Venus’ favor abandons you on its inevitable orbit. Look for opportunities to advance over the next two weeks, especially at your job and finances. However, remember that every action you take will cause an opposite and equal reaction. Afterall, we’re playing a game of balance.

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEb. 18] Some may be quick to label you a space cadet over the past few days. However, you’re perfectly fine. The stars have aligned for you to have intense moments of clarity and introspection over the next two weeks. Enjoy the insight and don’t worry too much about the future. Venus’ trek onward continues to be in your favor. But don’t be too late to act. Your luck won’t last forever. Your Big Brother 16 Houseguest Soulmate: Victoria Rafaeli

The super moon has come and gone, and will it continue to leave positive vibes for your social endeavors over the next couple of weeks. However, pay extra attention to your physical game. Neptune will allow you to summon strength you may not have realized you possess. If the opportunity for a fishing trip comes up make sure you jump on it because you’re sure to catch more than just a fish. Your Big Brother 16 Houseguest Soulmate: Donny Thompson

PISCES [FEb. 19 – MAR. 20] It seems like other people are absolutely determined to keep putting obstacles in front of you, but you keep knocking them down. Instead of focusing on how many challenges you’ve recently faced, look at how many times you’ve succeeded. Whether it’s sheer grit and determination or a whole lot of luck, you’re still cruising through just fine. Taking stock of how far you’ve come will lead to great inspiration as the full moon wanes. ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19]

The distant planets are holding the strings to your likeability. Luckily they’re slow moving and definitely falling in your favor. If you embrace yourself and let your aura shine, all those around you will benefit from your magnetic personality. The stars are drawing people closer to you. So embrace them and welcome them into your life. Just don’t forget to stay true to yourself or you’ll inevitably get lost in your own crowd.

Sometimes things don’t work out the way we plan. Sometimes other people are definitely to blame. However, it won’t do you any good to dwell or point fingers. Despite how chaotic things may feel, the stars have been kind and you’re likely to excel in areas you may not have focused on. These successes, although unexpected and not part of your grand plan, will prove to be of paramount importance to you going forward.

We might as well call you Madame Butterfly because you’re social graces have you delicately floating in all the affairs of your many confidants. Having everyone in the your ear can be a true asset, but letting people figure out you’re holding this wealth of knowledge could be your downfall. Just remember to stay alert because there are plenty of people willing to clip your wings out of jealousy.

For weeks Venus has distracted you with intense feelings of love and you’re finally clearing her intoxicating influence. It was a great time to foster a lasting relationship, however, Venus’ attention often leads to falling head over heels for an unrequited love. Circle back and take a critical eye to the decisions you’ve made over the past few months. If Venus left you blind to an approaching surprise the time to catch it is now.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21] You’ve got a goal and a plan on how to get from here to there, but you never know how the dice will roll. Stay nimble and keep your boots out of other people’s muddy waters. The stars continue their trek and it has you balancing a rocky and precarious ledge. However, maneuver it well and the reward will be yours for the taking. Look for financial gain and a new point of view to emerge over the next three weeks. Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Sometimes being labeled the villain isn’t such a bad thing. Mercury’s movements will continue to plague your personal relationships with strife and cause those around you to question your intentions. However, stay true to your mission and they’ll eventually see that your heart is pure gold. An unexpected (but delightful) opportunity will arise on August 26 if you remain vigilant.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] The stars have put a sparkle in your personality that others around you enjoy. Use your wit and good intentions to compliment it and you’ll be the belle of the ball. However, be wary of telling tall tales that could expose your grand plans before you’re ready. The next couple of weeks could prove to be rocky for you. So shore up your allies and ride it out for a taste of sweet success. Look for a unique opportunity for advancement on August 21. Your Big Brother 16 Houseguest Soulmate: Christine Brecht

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Some may say you’re just floating by right now, but the stars wouldn’t characterize it that way at all. Floating down the river is a great way to get where you’re going - as long as you stay in control. As the stars move about avoid getting caught up in the changing tide of social battles surrounding you. You don’t have to be above the fray. Stirring the pot could be beneficial for you if done properly. Just avoid getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar.

Holler Poodles!! Return to 3 Flags Over Here (Pt 3). Surprisingly, Selma hadn’t had enough fun yet so we headed over to the Spindle Top ( the ride that spins you around while the floor drops down. I could only think that a tragedy was about to occur but Selma said it would be fine. As we got into the cylindrical space and lined up against the wall, we both pulled our tube tops tight and mini skirts tighter. Selma was on my right and an older gentleman and his wife were on my left followed by what looked like a gaggle of their grandchildren. Selma and I looked at each other hoping everything would turn out ok. With a sudden jolt, the ride started slowly spinning to the left and increased speed. It was then I realized this was not going to end well. Now just in case you aren’t familiar with concept of centrifugal force, its basically when things speed up to the point everything is pinned again the outer wall of whatever is spinning. (I should write a drag queen technical manual). So while my legs and hands are pinned against the wall and can’t be moved, all of a sudden, in tandem, my boobs, Selmas teeth and the old man’s teeth next to me start to wiggle out of their confines and into broad daylight. As if someone had choreographed a dance, the teeth, my boobs and the other teeth start to do the conga in a line whilst we were all spinning helplessly and horrified at the display. Then, with another jolt, the floor falls from under us and the barrell tilts on its side. Selma and I both looked at each other in horror as we realized the centrifugal force was pulling our mini skirts down exposing our hairy mounds to the crowd. I was mostly horrified. This continued on for what felt like hours but must have been just a minute. The ride soon ended and so began Selma’s search for her teeth. Whilst I was attempting to cover up, I realized the old man next to me was gumming my nipple to which his wife said “Henry! How could you?” to which he replied “They were hanging so low, I thought they were yours!” Selma quickly grabbed my hand and rushed me off to tell me she had found a newer, nicer pair of dentures. I was so happy for her. While our time at 3 Flags Over Here had come to an end, we could only look back fondly at our time. Be sure to check out Three Flags Over Here in downtown Jonesboro and tell them Mary Edith and Selma sent you! Love and lashes,

GLEE FIFTY SHADES OF GREY SONG OF THE SUMMER MISSY ELLIOT It has been almost a decade since the illustrious raptress released her last solo studio album, “The Cookbook” (2005). Since then, the rapper has lent her voice to several other artists’ hits such as Little Mix’s “I Deserve It” and Fantasia’s “Without Me.” Despite the decade-long gap, Missy’s longtime producer and songwriting partner, Timbaland, insists we will get our freak on to a new Missy record soon. In a Rolling Stone interview Timbaland says, “It’s coming. It’s on her. She got the first single; it's just a matter of when she wants to do it. We got the hollow-tip bullet in the gun. We have the game changer right there.” In regards to what the new album may sound like, Timbaland relays that it’s unlike anything we have heard before from Missy. What do you think, guys? After nine years of rumors, will 2014 finally be the year Missy pulls the trigger?

The dog days are upon us and summer is winding down. So, the big question remains: What hit record deserves to be crowned the song of the summer? Every summer has one. That one song that you can’t stop playing. No matter where you are at, when you hear it you’ll always think of the summer of 2014. We’ve had a lot of great hits this past season (“Am I Wrong” by Nico & Vinz, “Rude” by MAGIC! “Drunk in Love” by Queen Bey and many others); however, one distinct voice has risen above all the rest: Iggy Azalea. You knew the answer. Iggy not only rocketed up the charts with her infectious single “Fancy” but also made a stand-out appearance on Ariana Grande’s soul-stompin’ “Problem.” Iggy has become the sixth artist ever to occupy the top two positions in the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to the longest running song to sit at the top of the chart by a female rapper, it is also the first by a rapper from Australia. Should we be surprised? Who hasn’t been singing, “Who dat? Who dat? I-G-G-Y I-GG-Y” all summer long?

CHANNING TATUM

According to Universal Studios, the first trailer for the adapted, erotic novel has garnered well over 100 million views. Most of these views occurred the first week it came out setting a record for the successful launch of a movie trailer. The total number of views considered is a combination of the official and unofficial copies on YouTube. Apple’s trailer page, Facebook pages, IMDB posts and posts on Yahoo’s movie site all contributed to the trailers mind-blowing success. Is it any surprise though? We all know everyone is continuously rewatching this trailer thanks to its male lead, Jamie Dornan. Dornan plays the BDSM loving Christian Grey and thanks to those many shirtless scenes in the first trailer, it is blatantly obvious why the former-male model landed the coveted role. With a chiseled jaw and abs like those, Dornan can pull out the blindfold and crack the whip anytime.

Although the upcoming season six of “Glee” means all of us Gleeks have to say goodbye, we also get to say hello to a few new characters enrolling at McKinley High. The final season is casting five new characters - completely different from the original cast. After reading the casting descriptions, one in particular is sure to be quite the standout. Spencer is a starathlete on the football team and openly gay! According to the casting notice, Spencer will not suffer the same problems former football stars on the hit show once did (i.e. Cory Monteith’s character Finn Hudson, may he rest in peace.) Spencer is said to be “post-Glee” gay. Meaning no one messes with the football stud because he can kick your behind. The role of Spencer has yet to be cast, but it looks like the final season of Glee is shaping up to be one to watch. The Fox musical-comedy returns in January for an uninterrupted 13-episode season.

POET

A video of writer and poet Steven Boyle recently went viral on YouTube. Within the video that Steven performed earlier this year at Penn State, he recites his spoken word poem “I Hit Send, or Modern Meltdown.” The poem covers Steven's fear of coming out and the ramifications of crushing on someone in the 21st century. The funny and sweet poem is relatable to anyone gay or straight who has come of age in the era of AIM, iPhones and Twitter.

On the August 11th episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” actor Channing Tatum runs pantless. After getting Tatum to do a back flip out of a hovering helicopter into a lake, Grylls suggested Channing take off his pants to “wring them out.” Being the classy ex-stripper he is, Channing happily obliged. Guess, Grylls was hankering to see Channing drop trou. And for that we are thankful. 42 : August 14, 2014
