How Not To Wear Out

Your First Date Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

What do you wear on a first date to make the best impression? Your Sunday best or your most unique stylings? Here are five rules that will guide you to an impeccably dressed first date.

Rule #1 Don't Overdress Unless you're going to the opera or a very fancy restaurant where a dresscode is enforced, wearing a suit and tie often hits way above target. Of course, you want to dress nicely, but you also want to wear clothes that you actually wear and feel comfortable in. It's all about presenting the best version of yourself, not someone you're not.

Rule #2 Don't be Overly Trendy Rocking the latest trend and showcasing your unique style, you may think that you're being true to yourself, but it can come off a little distancing to your date. And don't worry: if you hit it off, there'll be plenty of opportunities to show off your one-of-a-kind personality!

Rule #3 Wear Good Shoes

Shoes really do say a lot about people, so pay attention to how your shoes look. As long as they are clean, polished and well cared for it doesn't really matter if you wear sneakers, dress shoes or loafers. Clunky biker boots, That all important first date with it's first impressions and though, may not exude the most refined impression. initial advances can quickly come to a halt if you or the person you're dating is dressed not to impress. You know, the guy you thought was all that when you exchanged numbers at the club shows up in too large, pleated khaki shorts, a dirty Although, you shouldn't wear a full suit and tie (see rule #1), it is always t-shirt and socks in sandals? Would you simply shrug and a good idea to dress up a little – like wearing a nice jacket over a t-shirt. think that it's not about appearances and not give a care If you feel comfortable, you can always take off the jacket and be more in the world? Be honest now! Shallow, as it may seem, we casual in the t-shirt alone. put a lot of meaning into what others wear and, albeit often unconsciously, we analyze and interpret what is worn – both our own and other people's attire. So, that guy wouldn't likely get a second chance – or even to second base... All black or all neutral colors signal you as being morose or plain. Don't be

Rule #4 Dress Up To Dress Down

Rule #5 Be (Somewhat) Colorful

afraid of wearing color, but don't overdo it either as it can be distracting with, say, a hot pink t-shirt. Solid hues like blues, greens and maroon always work well.

According to Buck Cooke, Executive Director, The Official Kick Off Party at the Georgia Aquarium is described as one of the best parties of the year by many in our community. Word on the street is the staff has been hard at work on surprises so top secret, even the Pride Committee does not know what to expect. Sponsored by Delta Air Lines, The Atlanta Pride parade is always a crowd-pleaser to thousands of marchers and spectators. The parade offers a little bit of everything, such as Dykes on Bikes to dancing men, decked out floats, political ingénues, elaborate costumes and colorful flags. It is a kaleidoscopic vision rolling down the street set to a backdrop of fantastic music. Speaking of music, the entertainment brought to you by Pride is free! A diverse array of acts from all over the world will be performing on the Bud Light Stage located in the Piedmont Park Pavilion and the Coca-Cola Stage in the Meadow. Some of Atlanta’s best talents will be showcased, as well.

STEEL

Magnolias

A Revival of Laugher and Tears by Dustin Shrader

Once again, it is time to share laughter and tears with the quirky, southern women of “Steel Magnolias.” Starting October 22nd, the Alliance Theatre is bringing the classic 1989 movie back to life complete with a full cast and creative team for the upcoming production. The show will run through November 9th, with opening night being held October 29th. Two-time Tony Award winning actress, Judith Ivey will direct, while an accomplished group of actors will portray the six bold, dynamic women. Becky Ann Baker (Broadway: Good People, TV: Girls) will play the cheery, candid Clairee, Mary Pat Gleason (TV: The Guiding Light) as the charmingly crabby Ouiser, Deirdre Lovejoy (Broadway: Lucky Guy, TV: The Wire) will play salon owner Truvy, Annie Potts (Broadway: Pippin, TV: Designing Women) is set to star as the steadfast and stable M’Lynn, Sarah Stiles (Broadway: On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) is playing Truvy’s newest hiree and new girl on the block Annelle, and Zoe Winters (Off-Broadway: 4000 Miles, Much Ado About Nothing) as the radiant, care-free Shelby, M’Lynn’s daughter. “This community of women is such a delightful and touching story to tell. It truly is an ensemble play for if we didn't have one of the six there would definitely be something and someone missing in the story,” said Director Judith Ivey, “Their histories deepen this story beyond its surface of humor and teasing. The intelligence of that humor is based on those histories and relationships. It really is a love story celebrating the woman as well as the human being.” 14 : September 25, 2014

Originally crafted as a play for which the classic film was based, the tearjerker dramedy is a timeless story about six independent, fiery women who tackle life, love and loss with typical Southern flair and style, all the while holding court at Truvy’s salon in Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Beginning with Shelby’s highly anticipated wedding, the play follows a timeline from Shelby’s nuptials to childbirth to her untimely medical complications, with comedic gusto and sisterhood camaraderie sprinkled in between to offset the dramatic, but sad realities life tends to hold. Annie Potts

Steel Magnolias can be seen Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 pm, Fridays at 8:00 pm, Saturdays at 2:30 pm and 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm, October 22 – November 9, 2014. Again, opening night is October 29, 2014, at 7:30 pm. Tickets begin at $25 and may be purchased at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office or online at www.alliancetheatre.org/steelmagnolias. The Alliance Theatre is located at the Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30309, at the corner of Peachtree and 15th Street.

the Bar

THE PERFECT WORK NIGHT? I like it when the bar is busy, because it’s usually fun and it means I make lots of money in tips.

If you’ve been out and about in Atlanta's gay nightlife, you know that the bars are populated by outstanding bartenders that serve up your drinks cold whether you want something new and surprising or good old favorites. We spoke to a couple of the fine bar men - and even got a few confessions out of them…

Favorite Drink Tea Tottler, currently (which is basically anything non-alcoholic), but back in the day my favorite was a Bloody Mary - and I still serve a mean one!

MOST AWKWARD BARTENDING MOMENT? I once had a customer take a dump on a patio outside! This wasn’t at Woof’s (they don’t have a patio…)

ABOUT BRENT My name is Brent Cochran-Maddox, I’m 41 years old and the manager of Bulldogs. I’m in a great relationship, and I love spending time with my partner and our four kids. What most people don’t know about me is that I’m really good at baking, besides making really good drinks. MOST AWKWARD BARTENDING MOMENT? There are soooo many to chose from… but what really irks me is calling someone ma'am or sir when they are the opposite sex or at least identify themselves as the other sex. That always gets awkward. BIGGEST NO-NO WHEN ORDERING A DRINK? Order your liquor first! In other words cranberry and vodka isn’t a drink, but vodka cranberry is. Please understand that when ordering.

ABOUT CHANCEY I’m 34 years old and grew up in Hurley, Virginia. I started playing the trumpet when I was 6 and made history by the time I was 7 being the youngest person ever to be in the high school marching band. I'm not sure if I still hold that record. My hobbies include video editing, cooking and the supernatural. I'm a certified Reiki practitioner, and I'm also proud of my spelling capabilities - give me a word and I'll spell it! Oh, and I have a fear of opossums - which is quite ‘possumbly’ a phobia… MOST AWKWARD BARTENDING MOMENT? I'll never forget the time I had to use my spray gun to put out the fire on this poor girl's head. The smell of burned hair is horrendous.

BIGGEST NO-NO WHEN ORDERING A DRINK? If you're standing at my bar wanting to order a drink, get off the damn phone! That's rude! Next in line, please. THE PERFECT WORK NIGHT? There's always going to be some work aspect that could have been better, whether it's more tips, less rain, less drama, etc. Nevertheless, I can honestly say that I look forward to going to work; and that's because of the people that I work with and work for. I'm surrounded by so many positive people that I've grown so close to and that's a blessing. I haven't worked at Burkhart's for 10 years for nothing.

The 'Astro-Pop', a layered drink that has Stoli Rasberry and sour mix, Blue Curacao, and grenadine (tastes just like the popsicle); and my signature drink, 'Take a Chance'. I can't reveal the ingredients, but take a chance, if you dare (it has Southern Comfort, melon liqueur and vodka and is delicious!).

ABOUT ANDREW I'm 30 years old and single. I love cooking, so much that I have even worked as a chef professionally, which really comes in handy when making new cocktails. I also hold a 1st degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and was a competitive cheerleader. I love tennis, even though I suck at it, but that doesn't stop me from pretending I'm Serena when I'm playing. MOST AWKWARD BARTENDING MOMENT? I don't know if I can really release that information. People expect a certain level of confidentiality from a bartender, and I don't really want to call anyone out. BIGGEST NO-NO WHEN ORDERING A DRINK? Don't go up to the bar when you have no idea what you want to drink. Especially, when its busy and you are keeping other people from ordering. Hang back a bit until you make up your mind, because if I have to stand there waiting on you to make your mind, you probably just cost me $10 in tips from the other 20 people who I could've helped.

Favorite

Drink

I don’t really have a favorite, but I have recently been working on some new cocktail recipes for fall and came up with something I call a "Spiced Pear Benedictine.” Its 2oz of B&B, a spiced French cognac, 1 oz of pear puree, and 3/4oz of spiced simple syrup. The pear puree gives it a nice creamy-like texture and the spiced simple syrup has this warm quality that just sings fall as it hits your taste buds.

EXERCISING REGULARLY? EATING HEALTHY? BUT STILL CAN’T LOSE THAT STUBBORN BELLY FAT? THERE MAY BE A SOLUTION RIGHT HERE IN ATLANTA.

20 : September 25, 2014

CoolSculpting® was designed for something some of us know all too well - “stubborn fat.” It is designed for people who exercise, what what they eat, but still can’t get rid of that small pooch in the belly, those love handles, or lower back fat. Basically it is non-surgical liposuction. There is no scalpel, needles, anesthesia, or down time from work. It works by killing fat cells with a new “freeze” technology. The body absorbs the dead fat cells and within two to four months you will see up to 25 percent of your body fat gone from the treated area. You can eliminate even more with multiple treatments. This technology was developed after a pediatrician noticed that during the summer some of his patients were developed dimples from sucking on popsicles. This led to the discovery that low temperatures kill fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. Fast-forward a few decades, when researched used this same concept - cold applied to a limited area to kill fat cells - to develop Zeltiq, or CoolSculpting. The procedure is performed by putting an applicator cup on the treatment area, and a gentle vacuum pulls the skin and fat up into the cup. Cooling plates on either side of the cup drop the temperature and freeze the fat cells. It is important to remember that the surface skin is not frozen; only the fat cells underneath. Once done, the skin takes about five or ten minutes to thaw. There will be some redness but that is due to increased blood flow. Some patients get a slight bruise from the suction of the vacuum, but it fades in about a week.

GAY DATING: AWKWARD FIRST DATE CONFESSIONS By Dustin Shrader Dating. Ugh, the thought of that particular extracurricular activity shrouds me in a sense of foreboding so strong it puts me off my lunch. Okay, that may be a tad melodramatic, but dating is hard. It has become a monotonous chore driven by societal expectations in a nine to five world, which is really more like a nine to midnight kinda world. In all honesty, who doesn't take their work home with them after leaving the office? Sad, but true. What is even more dreadful than the task of finding a date, is having the fearful but more times than not, inevitable, awkward first date. First dates are tough. They are cutthroat, make it or break it deals setting up the premise for the entire relationship if you are even lucky enough to make it to a second one. Consider the last first date I blindly subjected myself to. Let me set the scene. A strapping lad, yours truly, takes his seat across from a decent-looking guy who is so tall one wonders if he suffers from constant nosebleeds at such a high altitude. As the dinner progressed, the conversation began to lag. Despite my tried efforts, there was simply a lack of chemistry. It's no one's fault. It happens from time to time. However, Jack the Bean Stalk persisted to force something that just wasn't there, leaving me no option but to deliver the kindergarten commandment of “honesty is the best policy.” The dude still didn't get it. Therefore, I asked for my check. After paying and saying a polite goodbye, telling him we can remain friends and all that blasé jazz, he grabs me by the collar of my shirt and attacks me with chapped lips and a tongue that was hell-bent on giving my mouth a full lobotomy. Mind you, I am barely 5'8, maybe 5'9 on a good day, so it is baffling at the life-threatening backbend this kid endured in order to save what was already a failed experiment. After all was said and done, I walked out amidst the catcalls and jeers, only to later wind up with food poisoning from the bad sushi I consumed during said train wreck. Upon reflection of such an ordeal, I began to wonder if I was the only one who took such a beating during a first date. Alone, I was not. The following depictions are sordid memories from gentlemen all around the city who have taken a stroll down Awkward First Date Lane.

24 : September 25, 2014

The Gay Blindside: I don’t really recall many dates being awkward, because first dates are always interesting. You are trying to figure out the person. You are assessing them to see if it is worth going on a second date. But, it is in the moments when you don’t know you are actually on a date when things get awkward. Multiple times I have had a friend say “Hey, let’s go grab dinner tonight” via text. No calling. No previous conversations. If you are like me, which can be kind of oblivious to when someone is flirting with you to your face, then you understand when someone says, “let’s grab dinner…” you are thinking, this is great! Go out to a cool place, catch up with a friend, have a good laugh or two, and call it a night. It isn’t until it is time for the bill when you notice the other person is acting stranger than normal. Then asks for one check and takes it. He then proceeds to tell you he is paying because this is a date. Since when was this ever a date?? How did I get roped into this when I have no physical attraction to this guy? Sweet and kind, but no sexual chemistry on my end. Then, comes the kicker, the moment they try to take you back to their place. I’m sorry, but just because you tricked me into going on a date and paid for dinner does not mean we have to do anything. So, the awkward moment ensues where I ask to go home and make sure to dodge any physical moves for the next fifteen minutes. Lightweight Guilt: It was back in the day when I was naive and didn’t know any better. I downloaded Grindr, started chatting with a guy I thought to be sane, and then decided to meet him for a date. The night started out with meeting him at a local bar and chitchatting. He kept asking me if I wanted a drink—to which I politely declined for I’m a lightweight with alcohol. After about an hour of “getting to know you,” he received a text from his best friend. We then decided to go to this guy’s house to meet his friends. Once there, I found a slew of catty guys and mixed drinks. Time passed, and I somehow was roped into going to the local discotheque. His best friend started coming on to me—even going to the extreme of touching me inappropriately under the table and showing me nude photos on his phone. With all that was going on, I finally succumbed to a drink called “Sex with Brittany.” Before I knew it, I was dancing in the middle of a group of drag queens and making out with my date. I woke up in his bed the next morning with a hangover and the stench of regret. Also bruises. And a sprained ankle. And the solemn vow to never again because I can’t even.

Box-office Snooze Fest: I went to the movies with a guy for our first date. I can’t even remember what movie was playing because I was so nervous about who was going to make the first move. Thirty minutes into the film, I finally worked up the courage to hold his hand. I slowly wrapped my hand around his and prayed he wouldn’t pull away. He didn’t. The butterflies were raging. At that point, I sneaked a side-long glance, hoping he was feeling the chemistry. Turns out, the jerk was asleep. Snoring loudly, with drool running down his chin! My ego took to that one real well. When the movie ended, he woke up and acted as nothing odd happened. A few days later, I found out, he had taken two different dates to see that exact same movie. Guess the third time is not the charm for a player who doesn’t stay awake. Golden Showers After Dinner?: I recently took up online dating. I honestly can’t even relay a legit reason, other than I wasn’t meeting anyone interesting any other way. Therefore, I concluded, finding a love interest via social media would tally up many suitors. That it did. After setting up a profile and screening several of the guys who only wanted to trade “those kind of pictures,” I accepted a date with

a guy who seemed nice, cute and had his act together. We had dinner at a quaint little restaurant, complete with the usual ping-pong of getting to know one another. As we were waiting for our dessert, (a chocolate milkshake he wanted to share! So Lady and The Tramp <3), he randomly asked me what my peeing habits were. Um… what? Completely floored and unsure how to answer, I replied, “They’re fine.” He said, “The reason I am asking is I’ve noticed you drink a lot of water. I really like to have guys pee on me. I want to make sure you’re holding it until we get back to my place.” I could only smile; positive my face was frozen in my own interpretation of Heath Ledger’s Joker. Don’t get me wrong, I realize everyone has their fetishes, but bringing up your love of pee on a first date and assuming I would go along with it is ludicrous. Once the check came, I paid my half and told this creep, “Honey, you’re gonna have to pee on yourself tonight. Laters.” I have come to find these horror stories and others like them are interesting to say the least for a couple of reasons. First, they blast the lie that is normality to hell and back. I’m not even sure Lucifer himself would understand the madness behind a stranger’s unpredictability. It

is not wrong to believe that there are normal people out there experiencing normal relationships, each content with their significant other’s weirdness. Yet, the truth is everyone is dysfunctional. The kicker is individuality. We are individuals based upon our characteristics and perception of others that surround us. And not everyone is going to perceive the idea of being peed on the same way (At least I’m keeping all appendages crossed they don’t.). First dates are hell. An awkward first date is even more hellish. They only confirm that beneath the delicate veneer of civilization, everyone is mad. By that, I imply the love we are all searching for is mad. Love is the ultimate vessel of madness. It is beautiful, crazy, raw and at times painful. In order for admission to this mad, heartstring hospital, all patients must soldier through the first date forum. There is no formula or mathematical solution to avoid the scenarios detailed above. Some people are freaks and can’t be avoided. I am one, and so are you. Best advice I can give before venturing out on a first date is to relax and be you. If love is what you are after, sometimes you have to bite the bullet, grit your teeth, throw on your Nikes and just do it.

SOUTHERN MOUNTAIN

Getaways & Escapes by Dustin Shrader

Inviting hues of red, orange and yellow engulf the trees, while a crisp, cool breeze caresses the leaves, making you snuggle tighter in your Sherpa-lined jacket as you inhale the intoxicating aroma of the beauty of the South. This is just a taste of what you can enjoy when you look at our favorite mountain spots to escape to this fall. ROADTRIPPING ALONG BLUE RIDGE Blue Ridge Parkway might possibly be the most stunning, scenic drive you could take this fall. The 469mile highway curves and twists through two national parks—The Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah. With such mileage, the possibilities of how to spend your day or weekend are endless. Mountainous panoramic views, rolling hills of greenery tinged with fall paint, sporadic and surprising sightings of wildlife, in addition to countless towns, shops and tourist attractions are all the epitome of a scrap-booker’s dream.

THE MOUNTAIN TERRAIN OF THE GRANDEUR OF THE BILTMORE ESTATE: ALABAMA THE BEAUTIFUL ASHEVILLE, NC Having personally grown up in the last leg of the Appalachian Mountains, I can wholly assure that you will be hard pressed to find a more pure, simplistic joy than visiting the northern regions of this great state. Quaint towns are nestled along Lookout Mountain with the bubbling Little River Canyon streaking its way through the glowing fall color. If discovering the natural splendor of this jewel is not enough to persuade your welcomed presence, then the enchanting charm, antique shopping and southern hospitality of towns such as Anniston, Fort Payne, Mentone and Tuscumbia will undoubtedly make your weekend an unforgettable experience. 26 : September 25, 2014

The Biltmore Estate is not just one of the grandest homes in America. Actually, the real wonder is found in the surrounding landscape. Yes, while visiting the Biltmore you must follow the velvetlined ropes and tour the passages of the house. However, before or after your tour is complete, do not leave the estate without experiencing everything the foothills of Asheville have to offer. Enjoy hikes, float trips, carriage rides, historic downtown shopping and best of all the rooftop views, which gives one a clear understanding of why George Vanderbilt chose to build this vacation home in North Carolina.

CLIFFHANGING RED RIVER GORGE, KY If you are an active person, always on the go and naturally not content with leisurely sightseeing, then Red River Gorge is the place for you. Complete with grandiose arches and spiraling cliffs, Red River is a breathtaking spot to spend a day or two. It is not only gorgeous but it is rugged, rustic, and adored by Kentuckians. Due to its numerous overhanging cliffs, Red River is known around the globe as a thrilling time for rock climbers.

ON FILM

OUT 2014

by David Kinney

Summer is officially over and Fall has arrived bringing with it some of our favorite things to do in the city. From Atlanta Pride to the start of theatre season, there is always something incredibly fun and entertaining going on. One of the events you’ll want to go ahead and mark your calendar for is Atlanta’s annual LGBT film festival, Out on Film. We recently caught up with the festival's director, Jim Farmer, to get a sneak peek at this year’s event and the amazing films they’ve selected.

How do you select which films are part of the festival? We start the process on January 1st of every year and take films through mid July. We have hundreds of submission each year but this year we had a record number. I watch all the submissions and then work with the programming committee to pick a diverse, inclusive slate of the best films we can choose. What are you most excited for during this year’s festival? I am most excited about the number of films we are showing and the number of guests we are bringing in. We are still tweaking our guest list and some new additions to the schedule, but both will be record or near record numbers for us. I am also excited about the diverse slate of films we have scheduled. What movies are you really looking forward to this year? So many! We are one of the only LGBT festivals in the country showing "Compared to What: The Improbable Journey of Barney Frank" and I'm excited to show it and have one of the directors down for it, Sheila Canavan. I am also excited to screen "Tiger Orange" and have the director Wade Gasque and the two stars from the film, Mark Strano and Frankie Valenti, in as well. Basically, I love all the films we are showing, especially that a majority of these films will never play theatrically, so seeing them at a festival is the only chance for many.

Can you give us a little taste of what to expect from the work being screened by Christopher Hines and Del Shores? Del Shores' concert film "Naked.Sordid. Reality" is a chance to see Del in action and he's very funny. I think this is one of the funniest pieces he's ever done. He is an unparalleled storyteller. His film "Southern Baptist Sissies" had three sold out screening for us last year. Christopher Hines, who used to live here, is a huge favorite here. In years past we've showed his films such as "The Butch Factor" and "The Adonis Factor" and they've been increasingly popular. His new "Bad Ass Gays' Is a world premiere. It will be airing on Logo later this year and we look forward to showcasing his new work. We heard that the director and stars from “Blackbird” will be at Out on Film this year. What can we expect from the film and the screening with them? It's really an exceptional film. When we saw the film, we knew we had to have it as our opening night feature. It's a story all of us can relate to - growing up in the South and realizing we are different - and has a great ensemble cast, including Mo'Nique in her first movie since winning the Oscar for "Precious." We are excited about having director Patrik-Ian Polk down. He is beloved for his work on "Noah's Arc" and "The Skinny.” The young stars from the film are very good in the movie and I think patrons will really want to meet them and find out more about them and the movie.

What motivates you in annually creating one of America’s best gay film festivals right here in Atlanta? We've grown the festival to become one of the top 10 of its kind in the country and we want to grow even more. It's a chance for the community (and its allies) to gather together in a safe environment and see work for, by and about us. And to meet some of the most exciting filmmakers and performers in the industry. From a quality point of view, we are known for high quality and standards. That has been very important for our team. We could show eight days of "men get naked" films and do boffo business, but we aim for the most diverse and educational slate we can find. We love documentaries. Last year we closed with the remarkable documentary "Bridegroom" and had the star of the film, Shane Bitney Crone, down for the event. Thanks for chatting with us about this year’s festival. We’ll see you at the movies! Out on Film will kick-off this year’s festival starting on October 2 and runs until October 9. For more information and to purchase tickets to any of the shows visit outonfilm.org.

hose who walk every year during AIDS Walk Atlanta, which is now nearly a quarter century old and still going strong, know that they are walking to support an important and incredibly worthy cause. More than just walking to benefit AIDS treatment, they also want their voices to be heard. Many of the people who walk have family members, friends, co-workers or neighbors who are living with AIDS. For them, walking for the cause is a way to stand up and say that living with AIDS is difficult enough; individuals with the disease shouldn’t also have to suffer the lack of quality treatment. Standing up in this way and walking to support the cause also raises millions. Last year alone, with the support of teams and sponsors, AIDS Walk Atlanta raised more than $1,000,000 during the campaign. However, like the participants, the founders of this walk also want to raise awareness. On Sunday, October 19th, AIDS Walk Atlanta is committed to making sure that anyone in or around the Atlanta area is aware of this year’s walk. To that end, the group is bringing in the very outspoken and provocative personality, Sandra Bernhard to be Mistress of Ceremonies. Perhaps best known for her “take it or leave it, bitch” comedy, Bernhard is sure to be heard far and wide when she kicks off the event at Piedmont Park. Before leading the charge during the walk, Bernhard will deliver a speech as only she can. The outspoken comedic talent will, no doubt, leave the crowd laughing so hard that many will be gasping for breath before ever taking a step. Besides leading the walk, Ms. Bernhard will be performing to benefit the cause as well. For one night only, on October 18th, she will perform her no-apologies comedy

routine at the W Midtown in the exclusive top floor venue, Altitude. The first show will be at 7:30 and the second at 10 p.m. This incredible evening with Sandra will benefit AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K. With limited seating of only 250 guests at each show, those wanting to attend are encouraged to act quickly. As the shows are presented in partnership with Laughing Skull Lounge, tickets can purchased there or online at laughingskulllounge.com.

How lucky Atlanta is to be able to host such a talented and passionate performer for two nights this October. Anyone in Atlanta on October 18th is fortunate enough to be able to support AIDS Walk Atlanta simply by being one of the select who will share the evening with her and get a peek into the world that is Sandra Bernhard. Best of luck to everyone who wishes to make the cut…hurry!

Beginning her career in Los Angeles in the 1970s, and appearing regularly on-air with the likes of Howard Stern since the 1980s, Sandra is probably best known in the LGBT community for playing the first openly gay character on a network sitcom. She played Nancy Bartlett on Rosanne from 1991-1996 and delighted audiences with her brilliant comedic timing and sarcastic tone. Her brash demeanor and cutthroat wit on the show won audiences over and helped pave the way for many openly gay characters that would follow. Moreover, her portrayal of Nancy on the show was instrumental in showing mainstream viewers something that, ironically, the character of Darlene could not: sometimes the funny, smartass girl likes other girls. Audiences began to see that, although her character was a lesbian, they could enjoy her just the same.

To learn more about Sandra Bernhard, look for our intimate interview with her on Fenuxe.com.

Bernhard has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman more than 30 times and has been in countless other shows – Hot in Cleveland, Ally McBeal, Will & Grace, Law & Order SVU, and The L Word, just to name a few. Far more than just a comedian and television actress, Sandra has also starred in numerous films, recorded albums and authored books. She is a force that will not be stopped, no matter who or what may attempt to get in her way. As she continues to tour nationally and internationally with her new live show Sandyland, which spotlights her own unique and hysterical views, Bernhard still sells out venues all over the world.

If you think that bar, pub or tavern fare is merely a last and desperate resort to soak up the alcohol or avoid imminent starvation while having a drink, think again. Many bars have upped their food game so even flavor-savvy souls have started to turn to the bar food selection to satisfy their gastro-centric needs. Bar grub has indeed turned gastro and if you want to experience the best in tavern fare, you probably need to venture outside the gay Midtown bubble, because these places are often not on the gaydar.

THE PORTER BEER BAR 1156 Euclid Ave. theporterbeerbar.com Needless to say the beer rules when your bar is called ‘beer bar’ - more than 800 different beers are bottled and on tap at the cozy bar in Little Five Points. In tune with the publike atmosphere, the bar allows smoking after 10pm, which in turn makes it a fun hangout on weekend nights. Putting the bar aspect aside, the Porter Beer Bar also boasts an excellent menu that circles around classic bar food dishes, but all with an unexpected twist that raises the bar on this bar food. Try the amazing house cheeseburger and side it with the herbed fries and you can’t go wrong. Also, the Fish‘n’Chips – beer-battered, naturally – and the Shrimp‘n’Grits are out of this world! 34 : September 25, 2014

MANUEL’S TAVERN 602 North Highland Ave. NE Manuelstavern.com There’s something about the neighborhood bar feel and cozy, comfortable atmosphere that lower your shoulders inches when you enter Manuel’s Tavern. No wonder many frequent the place for a relaxing beer or cocktail, but if you’re opting for a great and tasty meal, you’ve come to the right place as well. Try any of their sandwiches, but go for the French Dip or the Philly if you’re into really treating yourself, and if you’re very hungry, because they are sizeable sandwiches. If you’re into loaded hot dogs you’ve come to right place as well – how can you not want the Loaded Dogzilla?

PUBLIK DRAFT HOUSE 654 Peachtree St. Publikatl.com Located right next to the Fox Theatre this gastro pub is ideal for some choice drinks and wonderful food before or after a show. The vast bar space does turn into a party scene come Friday and Saturday, so if you’re there for the food, we suggest you catch the tasty menu items at lunch. The smaller dishes like the Korean Style Chicken Wings and French Onion Soup may tempt you, but it is advised to go all in on their signature burgers: The lamb burger if you’re in the mood for a twist, the falafel burger for a very tasty vegetarian meal and the B&B burger if you’re more the traditionalist and want your beef and bacon. All will thrill your palate and make you come back for more.

BRICK STORE PUB 125 E. Court Square brickstorepub.com The menu at Brick Store Pub reads ‘fine pub fare’, and that’s exactly what it is. Brunswick Stew, Country Chicken Rillette and Lamb Loin Chops sounds like something served at a British countryside inn, but there is no denying the Southern roots of the food here. We warmly recommend the sandwiches – brat and meatloaf in particular – and if you’re in the mood of a more entrée style dish, you can’t go wrong with the Cast-Iron Pot Pie or the Springer Chicken. If there’s room for more they serve the best whoopie pies around – well worth the trip aaaaall the way out to Decatur.

virgo [AUg. 23 – SEPT. 22]

The stars are seemingly working against you. Shore up your mental reserves and ready your body for battle. Extra sleep when possible and a healthy dose of Vitamin C will do wonders for you. If you see an opportunity for a shortcut take a moment to pause and reflect on whether your intended course is the best one. Look for a unique opportunity toward the end of September.

libra [SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] You’re walking on sunshine and boy does it feel good! The stars are showering you with their blessings and good will. The opportunity for fortune and advancement at work are in the stars for you if you can keep on your current path. Be wary of flashes in the pan. Pretty distractions may be entertaining but they aren’t good for the long term.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

Don’t forget about the people who have your back. That’s a powerful army that you can turn to when the seas of life get rough. Sometimes it may feel like you’re stranded in a dinghy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You may not be sailing the waters in a mega yacht, however, there is no reason in the stars that you can’t get to that point.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21] Noticed a nagging sense of dread following you about lately? The stars aren’t doing you any favors – especially not Mercury and Jupiter. You could let this drag you down and get eternally lost in their orbit. Or you could simply jettison yourself away from their orbit and make your own luck. If you put your mind to it there is nothing astrological that will stand in your way.

Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Beyoncé and Jay Z aren’t the only people Drunk In Love that are reportedly having marital problems. Your personal and intimate relationships are standing precariously on several different ledges. There is no need to push any of them if you can keep up the balancing act for just a few more weeks. Things look decidedly better in the end of September.

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEb. 18] When stress and anxiety come knocking you should follow the stars’ lead and continue merrily down your orbital path. There is no need for blissful ignorance, but deviating from your timetested and considered plan of action is hardly necessary either. See reality for what it is and figure out how to jump the hurdles being placed before you. An apparently happenstance meeting could turn into love during September. 36 : September 25, 2014

PISCES [FEb. 19 – MAR. 20] Sometimes not understanding something or being completely unaware can be a good thing. The stars are showering you with a strong desire to micromanage right now. Avoid this, if possible, because it will cause problems in both your romantic and work relationships. If you can see the value in other people’s ideas and plans you may avoid several headaches down the road.

ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19] Are you the master of your own domain? You can’t reign supreme in the present if you’re haunted by the ghosts of your past. Some things you simply can’t change. Fretting over things that have come and gone will surely get you nowhere. However, learning from them will put you into a better position in the future as you’ll be similarly tested during the third week of September.

Taurus [APR. 20 – MAy 20] Does it seem like your to do list keeps growing, but the amount of items you get to check off never seems to get any larger? The stars have made it easy for you to overextend yourself over the summer months and it may just not be catching up to you. Taking a bit of “me time” isn’t selfish – it’s healthy! Shifting priorities could do wonders for you as the stars have lots in store before the year’s end.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] A major life decision will present itself when you least expect it during September. A surprise quandary may sound exciting at first, but give your contemplation the proper time it needs. Don’t jump the gun with this decision. A healthy dose of Devil’s Advocate could keep you from diving into the shallow end.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] You’re stronger than you’ve ever been before mentally. Take advantage of this tremendous asset by taking a critical eye to what you’re doing in life. Are you where you want to be? The stars are pushing you toward bigger and better things, but complacency will be the hair in your drain. Get too comfortable with the way things are and you’ll find your life force slowly leaking elsewhere leaving you fragmented.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] The stars rarely put only two options in front of us. Even if all you see are Option A and Option B there is wisdom in looking for the middle ground. Venus has you locked in its orbit, so get ready for a bumpy and wild ride. Make sure you’ve cemented your plans before the end of September. Just because a window opens you’re not guaranteed that it will stay open.

Holler Poodles!! I’m so excited to announce a special event on October 5th @ 1pm at Einstein’s. Please join me and the Jerusalem House team for a very special brunch show and fundraising event for AIDS Walk Atlanta. Einstein’s has graciously donated a 42” flat screen TV to be given away. Join me along with some of my favorite entertainers, a few hot studs who will be auctioned off for charity and a fun-filled afternoon of community! Mark your calendars now: OCT 5th @ 1pm at Einsteins I hope to see you all there! In other news, I’m so ready for the new fall TV season to start. I’m like a dog with a biscuit on their nose waiting to eat it. The new View started this week, and I am pleasantly surprised at how much I like it. I’ve always loved Rosie O’Donnell’s brash style but was concerned how she and the other panelists would get along. I must say she seems to have mellowed a bit. I’ve always loved and respected Whoopi Goldberg too and am excited to see what kind of dynamic develops between everyone. Though Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy were likeable, I think it was the right move to replace them and to add some new perspectives. Change is good! Based on the recommendation of a dear friend, I’ve been binge watching “The Good Wife” starring Julianna Margulies and I’m totally enthralled with it. If you haven’t watched it, this is a great show. The acting is superb! My most anticipated comedy premiere is of course “The Big Bang Theory” which was originally pitched to me. The producers heard about the time I cleared a whole section of the Braves game with one loud fart. I tried to hold it in but the hotdog and beans did a number on my stomach and you know what they say… better out than in… so… I let er rip…. my dress, my hose and my panites. It looked like there had been a bad fire but luckily there were no fatalities. Just a few patrons knocked out. Wheewwww! Finally a quick shout out to my friend Sadie at the Origins counter at Macy’s at Lenox Mall. As we head into the Fall and Winter seasons, the importance of skin care cannot be emphasized enough. Stop by and let her take care of your skincare needs. She’s a good ‘ol helping of Southern charm and will have you laughing in your seat. Tell her Mary Edith sent you! Love and lashes,

LIGHTS, CAMERA… VIAGRA? pop culture by Dustin Shrader

IT’S ALIVE! Well, looks like Deadpool is not six feet under after all. The much anticipated and highly rumored X-Men spinoff has finally secured a release date for February 12, 2016. Although nothing is yet confirmed, eight-pack abs galore hottie, Ryan Reynolds is assumed to reprise his role. Reynolds previously played human Wade Wilson alongside Hugh Jackman in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

So is Viagra the new trend on the block? In recent weeks, several young Hollywood stars have admitted to popping the little blue pill to enhance their already viral performance in the bedroom. Divergent star Miles Teller, discusses his boning-up experimentation in the new issue of Elle magazine, “Uh, yeah. I’ve taken it before. My buddy in Vegas gave me one. He was like, ‘Bro, break it in half and take it two hours before you’re ready.’ But he was right.” 27-year-old Teller is not alone. Zac Efron loosely confirmed his own encounter during an interview on Conan, “I had a friend of a friend try it, like a half of a half of a Viagra.” Mmm hmm, I see you Zac. Ashton Kutcher has also copped to taking the drug. “I took it a few times recreationally. It’s illegal, but I’ve taken it.” I guess their acting careers are not the only thing on the rise these days.

YOU GOT A BIG WHAT? Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea finally bare their booties in their longawaited “Booty” music video. Think there is such a thing as too much booty? Never! Especially when referring to J.Lo and Iggy. The music video definitely lives up to its name. Move over, Nicki! “Anaconda” has been booty-ed out!

NOT TOO GAY TO DANCE Looks like the not-so-secret secret is out. Julianne Hough all but confirmed that current Dancing With the Stars Contestant, Jonathan Bennett (aka Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls) is gay. In an interview with Extra, Hough casually revealed Bennet’s sexuality, “He tweeted me on twitter last year and said I had a nice butt. I thought, ‘I should go out with him!’ Then realized that’s not going to work because he’s gay.” Despite there being plenty of rumors, Bennett has never publicly admitted one way or the other.

True Blood star Joe Manganiello is not only a fighter on-screen but off-screen, as well. While accepting the Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign in Seattle, the hunky actor revealed his reasons for standing up for gay rights. “I had to watch my friends endure challenges not experienced by the straight community. I’ve never had to suffer any of those difficulties myself… I decided to use my platform to fight for all of the people to feel free to be who they are. I choose to fight for a world where equality is a reality, not a dream.” Manganiello is currently hard at work filming the sequel to 2012’s smash, stripper flick Magic Mike.
