oveR 40 PRiCeless automobiles will get the utmost in preferred parking September 11th and 12th as the Georgia Aquarium hosts its first ever Classic Car Show. Whale sharks, manta rays, beluga whales, and hundreds more majestic creatures will provide the backdrop for the autos inside the Oceans Ballroom, the 23,000 square foot future site of the Pride Kickoff Party next month. You'll find a few more of the collectables parked in various locations inside and outside the Aquarium.

The stars of the show date back to the 1920s, from the 1927 Pierce Arrow to the 1955 Mercedes Gullwing Coupe with its signature roof-hinged doors opening skywards. RADIATORS HeADs sWivel As a fleet of pristine cars take the turn off North Druid Hills into the parking lot of the restaurant, surrounding the lot's perimeter. Jags, Caddies, Alfa Romeos, Beamers, Vettes, vintage muscle cars—the sun bounces off the body of each waxed, polished wonder. Doors open. Out step the drivers. They're here. They're queer. And they love their gears. The monthly “cruise-ins” are part of a spate of activities held by the Lambda Car Club-Dogwood Region—the Southeast's premiere club for the LGBT car enthusiast. The members of LCCDogwood gather at car shows, how-to clinics, road rallies, and other social events over their shared love of all things automotive. Gay car clubs aren't a new phenomenon by any means. LCC chapters started sprouting up across the country in the early 80s, with the Dogwood Region planting its oil-soaked rainbow flag in Atlanta in 1989. LCC now claims 30 chapters with over 2,200 tire-shining, dash-dressing friends of Dorothy nationwide. Gay gyms, gay bars, gay sports leagues, and gay churches aren't for everyone so it's yet another option for those looking for “social fellowship” as LCC-Dogwood puts it. “I've got friendships around the country that go back more than 25 years,” says John Muller, President of Lambda Car Club International and co-founder of LCC-Dogwood. “The car club is what brought us together.” Don't worry, you don't have to own a collectible car to take part in LCC-Dogwood either. You just have to like cars. And being gay doesn't hurt.

THE AUTOMOBILE BOOM of the 1950s produced an indelible image of the time: diner parking lots swarming with immaculate cars dolled up specifically for the occasion. We went out in search of a diner with the same retro 50s vibe yet still caters to an upscale crowd. Where multicolored neon shines down on a sea of badass autos. We found it at Buckhead Diner. Marble and mahogany blanket the interior. The three-toned optic design of the floor reminds us of an MC Escher painting, except these are made of Italian marble, they’re not on our dorm room wall, and we’re not stoned.

SHORTLY AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA,
we were left with the choice of either trashing food from the powerless fridge or cooking the best way we knew how. So after brainstorming we decided it was time for dinner. What's in the fridge? Five pounds of ground beef. In the middle of our candlelit living room, we used an adapter to power a slow cooker with our car batteries. The reason for multiple batteries? The ground beef took four-and-a-half hours to brown, so after one battery died, we switched it out with a fresh one. Then we took the dead battery out and jump-started it back to life.

Speaking of altered states, the wine list focuses on a select group of quality vinos. The Rancho Zabaco Pinot gris will make you melt but get a bottle of the Dynamite North Coast Merlot if you’re feeling red. And yes, Buckhead Diner’s potato chips with Maytag blue cheese are like sunshine, ponies, and well... homogenized cow’s milk all rolled into one. But try the buffalo style gulf white shrimp with pickled cucumber sticks, too—it’s an unsung hero. For entrees, we lust after the grilled mahi mahi tostada with guacamole and pasilla chile sauce. Add the side of white cheddar stone ground grits and it’s a healthy marriage of the South and south of the border. Their white chocolate banana cream pie is an award-winner, but we took the road less traveled and went with the scrumptious peach bread pudding with Southern Comfort cream. With our ride retrieved, we pull back onto Piedmont with Buckhead Diner’s modern American morsels and opulent nostalgia parked securely in our memories.

frivolity still associated with being a gay man, it is pleasing to occasionally point out how we set trends not exactly expected of us. As in cars. As in the car as accessory to our lives. It's a landscape in which our heterosexual brethren go to all the anticipated gay extremes instead of us.

Maybe the car was the straight man's expression of ambiguous sexuality long before the term “metrosexual” ever got tossed around. Granted, this is easy to overlook. After all, cars are about smoke and engines and all kinds of macho components.

Dear Purchaser, A car? Me? I have a team of muscle men who carry me around on a throne, of course. It’s not as great as it sounds; they’re dumb as rocks. Occasionally they toss me on Peachtree Street when one gets distracted by something shiny. That said, I think you should go in a slightly more reasonable direction. Of course you want something with personality, something that will help you make an impression. You want something that says “I’m a naughty party boy,” but only on Saturday nights. On Monday morning, it should project “I deserve that raise!” as you park next to your boss (although “I’m a naughty party boy” might get you a raise, depending on your boss). So which way should you go? Import, domestic, SUV, crossover, sports car, or one of those new weird cubish things? Hm? Oh you thought I was going to answer the question? Hell no, I don’t know squat about cars, I’ve got men carrying me around the city for Liza’s sakes.
