EDITOR’SNOTE
Hello Atlanta! It seems we’ve all heard of the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf these past couple of weeks and some are even suggesting that we gays should change our Memorial Day plans - but when has a little “lube” ever scared us away? Pensacola will still have plenty of warm sunshine, cool drinks, and of course many sizzling hot gay men and women! We’ve spent the last few weeks talking with all the business owners and party coordinators in P-cola. We get the same message from all, “the show will go on.” This is our weekend to relax, Atlanta. So pack your bags, grab your copy of Fenuxe, and head south for some fun in the sun. And if you can’t partake in the festivities, don’t forget there are many great things to see and do right here in our own beautiful city! Stumped for ideas? See page 18 for some great things to do in Atlanta this Memorial Day weekend! See you in two weeks!

JOE GAUTHREAUX THE FENUXE INTERVIEW
F
rom city to city, booth to booth, DJ Joe Gauthreaux brings the vibe and the beat to the premium gay clubs and parties all across the world. But the New Orleans born and bred beatmaster has his feet set firmly on the ground. He’s both shy and engaging, and his sincerity shines through both in conversation and in his music. That sincerity has fueled his jump from teenage busboy to global star.
Gauthreaux took some time out while roaming the streets of San Francisco to talk to Fenuxe about his upcoming Memorial Day set at Pensacola’s Emerald City, the nomadic lifestyle of a DJ, playing for straight audiences, a “revealing” first gig and his love for Atlanta boys. Fenuxe: So how does someone go from busing tables at Chuck E. Cheese in New Orleans to traveling the world as a DJ? Gauthreaux: I was 16, that was my very first job. Everybody’s gotta start somewhere I guess! Then when I was a senior in high school I started going out to the clubs. I just loved all the dance music and found myself really captivated by the whole club scene. So I asked some DJs there to show me how to do it and they did. I made some tapes and brought them to the clubs and it just took on a life of its own. Fenuxe: What do you like most about traveling from city to city? Gauthreaux: All the amazing friends I’ve been able to make. And it’s just been really nice to travel to all parts of the world that I wouldn’t have got to see on my own. But the act of traveling? I don’t think anyone really likes that, but you learn how to deal. I try and spend a lot of time at home in L.A. to achieve some form of normal life---going to the gym and dinner with friends and going to movies and stuff. Fenuxe: What’s your strangest or most memorable gig? Gauthreaux: One of the little-known facts I don’t even put out there is that one of my first DJ gigs was at a bathhouse. I DJ’d there for about three months until one of the clubs gave me a shot. I was so nervous! I’m very shy so I was all completely covered up and all these guys are walking around in next to nothing or nothing and I’m being offered sex from strangers. So that counts as one of the strangest! [laughs] One of the best would have to be Black Party in New York. It’s such an iconic party and I got the last shift. It was definitely an experience. Fenuxe: What is your creative process like? Gauthreaux: It’s almost a 24-7 thing. I’m not the type of person to get up in the morning and work from 9 to 5 on music, it’s not like that. I have the luxury of doing it when I want to do it. 10
FENUXEMAGAZINE
Fenuxe: Do you ever play for straight audiences? Gauthreaux: Not really, I mean I play for straight audiences that happen to wander in but I'm not one of those DJs who's trying to cross over. I know that sounds silly but I know my crowd. I like playing for the gays. I'm not straight, I don't know what straight people wanna hear and I'm not altogether that interested. If straight people wander into a gay club and happen to like the music then great! I think that's awesome. I'm just not trying to be someone else, you know?
A E
Like I said, it's just a 24-7 process. But I like it like that, it's my livelihood. This is what I've chosen to do. And I love it! I love dance music. I'm not a DJ for people to cheer for me or anything, I just really love music.
R E G AUTH
Gauthreaux: I usually listen to stuff that I'm currently working on. I’ll download it and just bring it to the gym. Right now there's one particular song that's like my anthem right now which is The Temper Trap, “Sweet Disposition.”
Richard Grey: I’m Back (One Night In Ibiza Mix)
TOP
10
O
Fenuxe: What do you listen to when you're on-the-go or at the gym?
Zoe Badwi: Release Me (Joe Gauthreaux Private Rework)
J
Gauthreaux: They make my job a LOT easier because I have so many friends in Atlanta and I'm so welcome in the DJ community there. I usually have a pretty good idea of what I'm in for which makes it a little easier, but it also makes it a little more challenging too because they've heard me be good. So it definitely makes me step up my game because these guys expect the best.
Lady Gaga & Beyoncé: Telephone (various mixes)
J
Fenuxe: So Atlanta will be sending a huge crowd down to Pensacola. What do Atlanta boys bring to the table at your shows?
The Temper Trap : Sweet Dispostion (Axwell Remix)
X
I'm sure it wouldn't take me all that time if all I was playing was Beyoncé or Madonna and Lady Gaga. Those are obvious. I'm not trying to sound egotistical or anything but there are just so many DJs out there nowadays so I really have to work extra hard to set myself apart. I'm just trying to create an experience that you're not hearing anywhere else.
Kelis: Acapella (Joe Gauthreaux Symphony Remix)
U
I just have to be feeling it. I've been asked before if I have a day job. I'm like, “Are you crazy?!” [laughs] It takes so much time to get ready for these gigs, ya know?
D
Yinon Yahel: I Feel the Music (Original Dub)
Fenuxe: Do you have a long term plan or goal or do you just take it day-by-day and see what happens? Gauthreaux: Honestly I feel like there's so much more to do with the path I'm on right now. I just started to produce, so I feel like my feet are just getting wet in that area. Part of me feels old because I've been doing it for like 13 years but another part of me still feels pretty young because there are a lot of DJs that are approaching 50 years old who are still going really strong. I'm gonna do it as long as I feel like I'm not...sounding lame [laughs] and as long as people keep coming to hear me play. If all those things line up then I'm going to keep on doing it. Fenuxe: So what are your plans for Pensacola? Gauthreaux: I'll get there Friday morning and go to the beach with all my friends and then go to the gig on Saturday night. I'll definitely hang out and have fun for a little while. I'm looking forward to it because all my Hotlanta boys are gonna be there, so I'm happy! Fenuxe: We'll see you there, Joe! DJ Joe Gauthreaux will be appearing at Emerald City in Pensacola on Saturday, May 29th. For more information visit his website at www.djjoegauthreaux.com

here’s a certain beauty that comes with simplicity, like with a pair of Converse or a black Hugo Boss dress shirt. Simplicity can also work in your favor when you only have three days to explore the nightlife opportunities in a given town or city.
THE ROUNDUP The Roundup is a laid-back Pensacola institution with a brand new sheen. They’ve moved to a bigger, bolder spot two blocks down from the space they occupied for over 20 years. This prime spot for the over 40 crowd (with a generous dose of bears) stays open and pouring until 3AM for those who want to make it a night.

Move on up to the eastside of town for The 22nd Annual Decatur Arts Festival. Start the weekend with a lazy Friday night stroll through downtown for the ArtWalk. Then Saturday at 10AM the creativity explodes across the city. Authors, artists, dancers, storytellers, comedians and musicians converge to bring you the best in regional and national culture.
And all that....
Pride wasn’t the only festival to take a drycheck from Piedmont Park. The 33rd Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival is back and bebopping in the park after two years at other locales. The fest is free and the music is free-flowing, but if you need a little eye candy to go with the ear candy, check out the sets by Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Esperanza Spalding and Hiromi. These chaps and chicks have chops and they’re ready to provide a holiday from all your worries.
Say goodbye to a Princess.
Memorial Day Weekend brings one of your final chances to see the extraordinary “Diana: A Celebration” exhibit at the Atlanta Civic Center which features family jewels, heirlooms, paintings, artifacts, photos, home movies and letters. The centerpiece is the Royal Wedding gallery featuring Princess Di’s gown, diamond tiara, veil, 25 foot train, shoes and parasol---and no, you may not try it on. Round it all out with over 28 dresses, suits and gowns from Chanel, Versace, Valentino and other legendary designers and you have a reservation with royalty.
Carrie on with Jake!
Memorial Day Weekend delivers the ultimate double feature for the little gay in all of us. First up is a beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal in “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” trying to stop a rascally ruler from unleashing a killer sandstorm on the world. Not that the plot matters since many of you stopped reading at “beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal.” The pinnacle of the holiday is the return of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda in “Sex and the City 2.” So you’ve got swords, saviors, sass and style to choose from all weekend.
Remember.
We might not be able to serve openly in the military yet, but that shouldn’t discourage us from honoring those who have lost their lives in service of our country. The National Moment of Remembrance takes place at 3PM on Memorial Day. Wherever you are at that time, pause for one minute and honor our fallen.

tep off the beach, shower and slide into a fresh change of clothes. It's time to drive into Pensacola proper and prosper.
After a breezy stroll through the Pensacola Museum of Art, step outside and let the bay breeze embrace you. Just don't ignore the faint smell of lobster and succulent steak wafting over from next door. That's Jackson's Steakhouse, and it's the fine dining destination for the Fenuxe traveler in Pensacola. Let's start with a cocktail. There's a haven of handcrafted concoctions for you and your partner to choose. The Fenuxe fave? Jackson's Julep---Conecuh Ridge Whiskey with sweet simple syrup and fresh mint over shaved ice. If wine's on your mind, consider yourself blessed. Jackson's is an nine-time winner of Wine Spectator magazine's Award of Excellence. But now it's Executive Chef Irv Miller's turn to wow you. We always begin with the Louisiana Oyster Fry with Charred Corn and Jalapeno Relish. This Jackson's specialty bursts forward with crispy bacon, Windsor blue cheese cream, a dab of Tabasco and worcestershire reduction signaling one clear thing: you're not at the beach barbecue anymore. Let's keep the momentum going with an entrée. The options are bountiful, but don't force yourself to choose between steak and lobster. Why not have it all? Go with the Petite Filet and Tempura-Fried Lobster Stack. The plate begins with whipped potatoes with demiglace topped with buttered croutons, then Jackson's famous 6-ounce filet laid gently on top with grilled soy-sauce-brushed baby bok choy and ginger scallion sauce. And the crown? The tempura-fried lobster of course. Just find it in your heart to share if you dare. Dessert? Why not when you can always dance it off at the beach tomorrow? Try the Baked Fresh Balsamic-Berry Crumble. Just the right amount of light and sweet to send you off. And with that, you and your partner float out of Jackson's with satiated senses and sly smiles. Doors are opened, smiles are returned and that familiar bay breeze greets you once more. It's Gay Memorial Day Weekend in Pensacola, and Jackson's Steakhouse is serving up memories.

GAY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: A CITY REACTS FENUXEMAGAZINE

The first caravan of cars breaks through the city limits on Thursday night, just as the first fleet of private planes touch down at Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport. Hotels and resorts begin buzzing with activity, tables fill at restaurants bayside to beachside and the first hundred pairs of feet hit the pristine white sand.
And with that, residents started looking past the pink and seeing the green. Ted McCrary, General Manager of Pensacola gay club Emerald City, says business owners in particular saw an opportunity.
“I never saw any of the vendors or business owners just tolerate it---they really embraced That 100 explodes to 50,000 sun-kissed gay revel- it,” McCrary says. “They put up rainbow flags ers by Saturday afternoon and it is official: it’s Me- and welcome signs. In-town there’s a different story. Pensacola is about the only town on the entire Gulf Coast where this party can take place. The beaches on either side, from Gulf Shores to Panama City, are littered with condos, highrises and amusement parks. Pensacola Beach takes great pains to limit the development. But how do the residents of a small city in the Deep South feel about the population influx of gay tourists? “In the beginning there was a lot of pushback,” says Pensacola News-Journal reporter Kimberly Blair. “It’s the good old boy network, staunch Republican, conservative. People were pretty much against it.” Things started changing when LGBT visitors decided to stamp the dollars they spent to show the impact they were having on the local economy. “That really underscored the contributions that their business was making,” says Blair.

Fenuxe interviewed Pensacola Mayor Mike Wiggins, who was not aware of what LGBT stood for. While he repeatedly said that he “welcomes all of our visitors to Pensacola,” he neither addressed nor mentioned anything directly about the gay community. [Continued on page 26]

And
despite all the money we spend in Pensacola this weekend, you won’t find a single mention of any gay Memorial Day Weekend events on the website of the city’s visitors bureau. However, none of this has stopped us from coming. We kept coming back when it might have endangered us, we kept coming back after two hurricanes and we’ll keep coming back even if the city government keeps taking a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” approach to our presence.
“I don’t think anyone could stop it from happening if they tried,” Rev. O’Steen says. “It has a life of its own.” Just like we saw with the recent Westboro Baptist Church protest, if you keep showing up and you do so in greater and greater numbers, people will learn to accept you. With a little time and luck, they’ll embrace you. So we’ll keep spending our money with those who support us, from the first step on Pensacola soil to the moment we break back through the city limits for the trip home to the reigning gayest city in the nation.

WAYS TO LAST MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
J
umping from place to place and taking in all that Pensacola has to offer can be a drain. Fenuxe is here to make sure you stay alert and upright so you don’t miss a thing on your sensational spring fling!
Cool off ! Korres Yoghurt Cooling Gel is the cure for what ails you after several hours in the sun. A dab here and there to your face or body and it’s instant gratification: you’ll feel no more sensitive stinging or hellish heat. Be ultra cool with Korres!
Pace yourself. You're working with 72 hours. Don't blow it out the first day and stumble all the way to the finish line. Try taking a Max GXL supplement and increase your energy, concentration AND improve your liver function!
Recharge. The sun is beating you down by day and the clubs are killing your gluteus max-allover at night. Spa Portofino is ready for you with a full range of services from skin renewal to body wraps and mani-pedis to massages. You'll glide out of the posh resort with a fresh outlook and a purpose!
Hydrate. No matter what else you're drinking, make sure you keep bottled water handy at all times. Better yet, buy a Platypus. It's a collapsible 1-gallon water tank from REI that's good for the environment and you. Your friends (old and new) will thank you.
Cookout. You'll find a wide variety of delectable dining options in Pensacola, but the long waits and the crowds can sap your energy. The Palafox Market is the Fenuxe find for the ultimate cookout. This downtown delight has all the freshest seafood, produce and cheeses that you'll need to create the perfect sunset spread.
Sit down! The beach is packed, the music is pumping and there's a pretty new face everywhere you look. You're moving, dancing and taking it all in---just don't forget to take a break! Getting to know your new friend works twice as nice when sharing a two-person beach towel.
Give praise. You don't even have to leave the beach to give your spiritual side a boost. LGBT church Holy Cross MCC will have Sunday services in the sand. Rev. Sandy O'Steen wants you to come as you are whether you're in seersuckers or sandy short shorts. All are welcome!

PERSPECTIVES
orthwest Florida has always been referred to as the “panhandle,” which is a public relations problem. “Panhandle” is not...attractive. Besides, all of Florida is essentially the handle to the larger skillet of the US, isn't it? So why not “Gulf Wing?” How about “Continental Border?” But no, it's always been the panhandle, complete with its associations of dismal little towns, naval bases and no waves. But times have changed. Destin is hot. Panama City began attracting attention in the ‘80s and never looked back. Pensacola is and has been happening for some time, and “panhandle” has taken on a charmingly quaint meaning. It's a safe bet that gay culture is at least partially responsible for the fashionable status of this stretch once reviled as the place you go in Florida when you can't afford Palm Beach. The evils of generalization aside, the fact remains that when gay men decide to work some magic on a neglected and formerly undesirable territory, real estate values climb in no time. “Artists, bohemians and gays affect housing values through two kinds of mechanisms: an aesthetic-amenity premium; and a tolerance or open culture premium,” says the Oxford Journal of Economic Geography. “Findings indicate that [this] BohemianGay Index has a substantially positive direct relation with housing values across all permutations of the model and across all region sizes.”
There Goes the Neighborhood: The Great Gay Turnarounds Real estate moguls have taken advantage of this happy statistic for quite a while---that is, they keep their eyes on where the gays are going. And they have good reason to. Decades ago, far-sighted gays transformed strings of down-and-out blocks on Pittsburgh's Northside into a stunning and popular neighborhood of elegant townhouses. New Jersey's Ocean Grove carried the macabre nickname of “Ocean Grave”---a nasty reference to its predominantly senior population---for most of the 20th century. That is until gay men swooped in, took some chances and turned the little town into an oceanic gem.
BY JACK MAURO
Although, a noticeably gay settling of an area is by no means a formula for revitalization and success. What real estate trackers and their ilk cannot document are the failures, because a bad neighborhood that remains bad doesn't spark investigation. Nonetheless, there are still plenty of examples that point to happy results from minor gay migrations. Think about it when you and your partner spend those balmy days in Pensacola. It is an extraordinary irony: since when is the moving in of any marginalized segment of society embraced as a sign of good times to come? The LGBT community has long been seen as a dangerous and hedonistic element to the mainstream world, but we're beginning to get respect for something far different. For fresh paint, safer neighborhoods and a beautiful, peaceful domesticity.

Dear Mary, I have been with my boyfriend for about 6 months, we live together and I think it is about time that we meet each other’s families. So after many misgivings...he finally gave in and agreed. My parents are extremely liberal and raised me to have pride in myself. His parents are suburbanites who live far outside the perimeter who lead "normal" lives. There are miles between everyone in this potential family. Anyhow, two weeks from now, our families will meet for the first time in our small, meek, midtown apartment. The real problem I am facing now is an obvious one, Mary. Do you have any menu ideas that could please suburbanites? Thanks for your advice, Moaning and Menu-less in Midtown. Dear Moaning,
If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail her at mary@fenuxe.com. Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.
It’s so kind and thoughtful for you to strive to make your boyfriend’s parents as comfortable as possible; kudos to you! I have a few suggestions to make this evening run smoothly. First, if they’re as conservative as you say, they’re probably used to couples that consist of a male and a female. Perhaps you could facilitate their transition to seeing their son in a relationship with another male by dressing in drag for this initial meeting? Find some pictures of his mother when she was around your age and replicate her outfit. The two of you will immediately have something to chat about, and they will definitely take this as a sign that you have a healthy interest in them and are just as “normal” as they are—after all, you’re dressed like them! Next—and this is crucial—is alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol. I recommend a cocktail of 2 parts vodka, 3 parts whiskey, 2 parts gin, 6 parts moonshine, 1 part Sterno and just a splash of seltzer water. Garnish with a festive lime and encourage everyone to drink up. (Hint: this is Mary’s 2:00 p.m. refreshment every day!) You see, alcohol naturally makes people get along—especially people with widely varying viewpoints. To my knowledge, no one has ever had a fight when drinking, so mix up a pitcher of the above aperitif and watch your potential future in-laws mingle happily. Salud! As far as food, perhaps it would be a good idea to serve traditional dishes. I believe most people outside the perimeter prefer their food with gravy, so perhaps serve a light salad with sawmill gravy, sautéed shrimp and edamame with redeye gravy, and finish up with raspberries and mascarpone, spiced with nutmeg and accompanied by pepper gravy. If you can also find a way to batter and fry each of these dishes, I would recommend it. You should find these tips useful. I strongly suspect that following all of them will lead to an unforgettable evening—just the sort of night you want to set the tone for the rest of your relationship with these people, who are such an important part of your man’s life.
