FENUXE 4.19.2012 While it’s expected for us to write about the past
two years in this anniversary issue, we just couldn’t do it. We’re too excited about the future to spend time focusing on the past! In this anniversary issue here’s what you won’t find: A breakdown of the history and intricate operations of our company, the struggles of certain types of print media in a slumped economy, or how amazingly well we’ve overcome the opposition. Those things are boring, and frankly, anyone who isn’t in this business probably doesn’t want to hear it and would rather read something interesting. So this is what you will find: the latest and greatest of our wonderful gay community in Atlanta, for your enjoyment, presented by the best staff an editor could ask for.

HERE’S A ROUNDUP OF THE HOTTEST GAY NEWS ITEMS. FOR REPORTING ON LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LGBT HAPPENINGS, VISIT WWW.FENUXE.COM SEVERAL TIMES A DAY CARSON DALY GETS A SMACK DOWN
The mother of 9/11 hero Mark Bingham wasn’t laughing after Carson Daly joked about how gay airline passengers wouldn’t have been able to subdue a crazed JetBlue pilot during his recent inflight meltdown. “The world has its share of strong, heroic gay men,” Alice Hoagland wrote to Daly, noting that her son was among the passengers who thwarted terrorists on Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. Daly issued several apologies for his failed attempt at humor. ATLANTA PRIDE ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR GRAND MARSHAL
The Atlanta Pride Committee has started searching for individuals to lead the community during this year’s Gay Pride parade, and is accepting nominations for Grand Marshal until May 28. GOP SURRENDERS ON GAY MARRIAGE?
U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, who represents south Georgia in Congress, hinted that Republicans are abandoning their decadeslong strategy of using gay issues such as same-sex marriage to rally voters. “It’s been realized that back in ’94, you could jump up on the House floor and pound your chest about [gay issues], and secure a good voter intensity, which you can’t do anymore,” Kingston told the website Politico. STUDIES SUGGEST HOMOPHOBES ARE GAY
The people who have the most hostility toward homosexuality and gay rights tend to have “an unacknowledged attraction to the same sex,” according to a series of studies published in the April issue of the Journal of Personality & Social Psychology. “Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves,” said researcher Netta Weinstein. Jenna Talackova deserves a crown even if she doesn’t make it beyond the Canadian prelims of the Miss Universe pageant. The transgender bombshell was originally admitted into the contest, but was booted for not being a naturally born female. Talackova fought back and forced Miss Universe owner Donald Trump to re-admit her to the competition. Later, Miss Universe organizers and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation crafted a policy to make sure transgender women can compete in Miss Universe pageants across the globe.

INTERVIEW
Getting Intimate with
Idina Menzel Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture
I
f you don’t recognize the lovely face of Idina Menzel, your gay card should be revoked, shredded and burned.
With her work in the industries of stage, film, television and music, the powerhouse artist cemented her status as a gay icon years ago. On Broadway, she shared the stage with Kristen Chenoweth as the green-skinned Elphaba in “Wicked,” and she sang her heart out in both the musical and film adaption of “Rent,” which also starred her husband Taye Diggs. In the world of TV, she portrays the biological mother of Rachel Berry on the homo favorite “Glee.” And, finally, her new album “Idina Menzel: Barefoot at the Symphony” makes the perfect addition to any collection of beloved musical divas. Despite a hectic schedule, Idina managed to chat from her home in Los Angeles with Fenuxe writer Shannon Jenkins. Here’s what the superstar had to say. Shannon: Tell me about your new album. Idina: It’s a live performance, and it’s very me. It’s very personal. It really finds a balance between having this incredibly thrilling orchestra and allowing me to be intimate with my audience.
Shannon: What was it like to perform with an orchestra? Idina: I love it so much. It’s magical to have all these incredible musicians behind you. It feels great because it reminds me of how it feels to stand on stage in “Wicked,” with all those musicians supporting you. The theatricality and the sensationalism of it are very exciting to me. Shannon: Do you have a favorite song on the album? Idina: It changes all the time. I love doing “Tomorrow.” I like “No Day But Today” a lot. I think that came out really nice. I like it all because it’s all very real in a time when people are fixing everything they sing within an inch of its life. Shannon: Well, I love to hear your voice no matter what. I especially love when you sing on “Glee.” What do you enjoy most about that role? Idina: Many things. I love being on that set. I love being surrounded by that energy. I miss New York City and the theater so much, so it’s nice to be surrounded by all those talented singers/dancers/ actors. The camaraderie and community aspect of that is inherent on that set. It feels really good to be there.
16 : APRIL 19, 2012
Shannon: So, what do you miss about “Wicked”? Idina: I miss eight shows a week. I miss the character—getting inside her head and her heart every day. I miss that instant reaction you get from an audience. I have that in my concerts but it’s different. I love living in that character’s shoes. I loved the end of act one every night. No matter how I felt about my
INTERVIEW day before I got there, it was so exhilarating to soar over the audience. It was uplifting. Shannon: Although “Wicked” is over, you’re still super busy. How do you balance your personal life and career? Idina: I don’t know. [Laughs]. I’m doing it right now. I have a two-and-a-half-year-old running around the house playing hide-and-seek and I’m trying to answer your questions. It’s very difficult. My priorities are being a mom and a wife first. All the work stuff is gravy. Being a mom has made me a better artist. It puts things into perspective. It gives you less time to overthink things. It’s just liberated me in so many ways. I feel good as a mom, and that rolls over into my confidence as an artist. All that stuff is such a gift. But any time I’m away from my son I feel guilty about it. I just have to keep reminding myself that he’s going to grow up watching a woman who is strong and pursued her dream and was independent. He’s going to grow up seeing his mom fulfilled and happy….and he’s pulling on my foot right now! You’re pulling on my foot! That was perfect timing! [Laughs] Shannon: Sounds like he keeps you on your toes. What is your favorite thing to do as a family? Idina: Honestly we take family naps on Saturdays. So we sandwich Walker and take the longest, sweatiest, delicious nap together. That’s my favorite. We like to take him to the beach. He loves the ocean and the sand. It’s the little things. Shannon: What is your guilty pleasure when you’re home? Idina: This past season it was watching “The Bachelor.” I’m embarrassed to say it but that is the truth. Shannon: I think we all have a show like that. So, what are your plans for the rest of the year? Idina: I’m going to go back on tour and try to break the album internationally as well. I’ll do some more TV and film. I’m eager to get back to New York City to do another play. I’m in the midst of workshopping different ideas. Shannon: What’s a must-have in your dressing room? Idina: Obviously pictures of my family and friends. Hmm…I should just say a bottle of tequila; that might be more interesting. Oh, a steamy shower. It helps my voice a lot, and especially when I was in green makeup every day I was steaming my pores. I like to warm up and vocalize in the shower, so that’s really important to me. That and my pictures of my family. Actually I haven’t done a play since I had my son so now I’ll have pictures of Walker all over.
Shannon: What Broadway show do you most want to see right now? Idina: I haven’t seen a lot because I’ve been in LA and touring, so I’m behind. I haven’t even seen the “Book of Mormon,” which I’m ashamed to say. I have to get home and do that. I’d like to see “Book of Mormon” for sure. And “Porgy and Bess” as well. Shannon: If you were to write your own Broadway show, what would it be about and who’d star in it? Idina: It would probably be about some kind of heroine and her journey defying all odds. It would be me and maybe Bette Midler and Patti Lupone. Barbra doesn’t like to do theater so I’m not even gonna ask. Shannon: That sounds like a good show. Idina: Yeah, it’d be good, right?

ortraying strong female characters doesn’t intimidate actors Topher Payne and DeWayne Morgan. The two played the Sugarbaker sisters in the popular “Designing Women Live” shows at OnStage Atlanta, and now they’re tackling The Process Theatre’s production of “Auntie Mame” with Topher in the title role and DeWayne as Vera Charles. The gender-bending thespians spoke with Fenuxe about their unique addition to Atlanta’s theater scene.
Fenuxe: What interests you about playing female roles? DM: Because you change everything about yourself. The way you look, walk, the way you talk. It’s as far from yourself as you can possibly get. TP: And that level of concentration makes for such good habits in any other role. I studied to play David Frost in “Frost/Nixon” the same way I prepped to play Julia Sugarbaker—picking apart every little detail of how they speak, how they move. Performing is all about experiencing the world in someone else’s shoes. For us, those shoes are often high heels.

Fenuxe: What’s the biggest challenge of playing a female role? TP: Oh god, take your pick. Making people forget they’re watching a 200-pound man who’s 6’6” in heels. Vocally, I’m a pretty deep baritone, so particularly with someone like Mame I have to find a way to hit the pitch of the voice and still be able to breathe. And in real life, I have a heavy, lumbering gait—I literally stomp around. So becoming graceful, finding that gentle economy of movement, takes real concentration. DM: The undergarments are extremely uncomfortable at first, but they really do help you carry yourself more like a woman. It keeps you aware of your posture and your movement. TP: The overall challenge lies in playing a character who happens to be female, not playing it as a drag queen. Being a drag

queen is an entirely different skill set that I’ve never had the opportunity to learn. I don’t think I could lip synch to save my life. Fenuxe: What drew you to “Auntie Mame”? TP: The story of Auntie Mame is such a celebration of individuality, and the right to live life on your own terms. Mame Dennis can accept anything you bring to the table, except hypocrisy or judgment. She has no tolerance for the intolerant. These concepts are still on the table in 2012. Picture how revolutionary she was sixty years ago. DM: Mame’s an amazing character, but she wasn’t the one who I fell in love with. That was Vera. Mame had to deal with the kid and the money problems, while Vera’s just off having a cocktail tossing off one-liners. That’s my kinda gal. But Mame and Vera share that love of adventure, who the hell cares what people think? TP: And what better way to honor this show’s unapologetic celebration of life than to let a couple of small-town Southern boys grow up to be glamorous divas?
m
DM: Your answer was so much sweeter than mine. Damn you. TP: Well, tell your mama to come, and then you can have a sweet story too. DM: Oh, I will. And everyone will say my story is the sweetest story they ever heard. TP: You are such a bitch. Fenuxe: If you could play a female role in any play what would it be? TP: I’d be Mama Rose in “Gypsy.” DM: But you can’t sing. TP: I sing with you in “Auntie Mame.” DM: Yes. That’s how I know you can’t sing. TP: Fine, who would you be? DM: Ouiser in “Steel Magnolias.” I would be great in that part. TP: You should be; you play her every damn day of your life. DM: You are a pig from hell. TP: Aw, DeWayne, you know I love ya more than my luggage.
e m a
Fenuxe: Which aspect of the show are you most anticipating? DM: I cannot wait to do the theater scene with Topher. Vera gets Mame a small part in one of her plays and all hell breaks loose. It’s so overthe-top, all this physical comedy. We are having a ball doing it, and I cannot wait for the audience to see it. TP: Mama and my Aunt Merry Ellen are coming from Mississippi to see it. Merry Ellen was my Auntie Mame growing up, and there are little aspects of my performance that I lifted directly from her. Getting to play the lead in one of their favorite stories for them is so exciting for me, and the fact that they’re so excited about it shows how far we’ve come as a family, you know?

Like everything in life, an anniversary trip can be a coin toss. Your vacation can exceed expectation or devolve into a disaster movie. To illustrate our point, we spoke with two local couples about their most memorable anniversary vacations.
RONNIE & BRENT
MARK & TAVIS
To celebrate their eleventh anniversary, Ronnie and Brent visited San Juan with a group of friends earlier this year. The couple rented a house from www.homeaway.com in the gated community of Ocean Park, which is within walking distance of several restaurants, gay bars and the beach.
Although he enjoyed the overall experience of visiting Cancun for his second anniversary, Mark’s vacation with his partner several years ago nearly resulted in a trip to the hospital—or the morgue.
“An Ultralight is basically a hang-glider with two lawn chairs and a lawnmower strapped to the top,” Ronnie joked. “I had never been so scared in my life. But, the beaches, lakes and mountains of Arecibo are beautiful from the air. It was the best $40 we spent on the trip.”
It was during a boat ride to Isla Mujeres that things took a turn for the worse. Once reaching the island, they discovered a pristine spot, which screamed “photo opp.” After Tavis posed on the reef, he pressured Mark to do the same.
Once safely on the ground, the couple and their friends rented umbrellas and stretched out on the beach. While chatting and drinking mojitos, Ronnie checked his email on his iPhone and discovered he and Brent had been selected as finalists for 11Alive’s WOW Wedding Giveaway, which they later won.
“Against my better judgment, I climbed up on the reef, a piece broke and I lost my footing,” Mark said. “I fell backwards and just remember my partner screaming. When he helped me up I was covered in blood.”
In the beginning, though, their romantic rendezvous seemed ideal. They stayed “There are a ton of clubs,” Brent said. “We hit in the all-inclusive adult resort Blue Bay up Splash, as well as Heaven and Hell.” Getaway (now Temptation Resorts), which Mark said deemed gay friendly. After jumping in the ocean to wash away the blood, Mark decided he could wait for medical “We screamed and said there was no way we attention once they returned to Cancun. could win,” Ronnie recalled. “So we ordered a round of shots and more mojitos. It was one “The boat ride back was excruciating,” said of our best days on the beach—ever.” Mark, who had also declined sun block prior to the four-hour round-trip excursion. Badly sunburned and bleeding, Mark sought relief from a bottle of tequila a group of kind-hearted strangers were passing around. “Even though I was cut, battered and bruised, that night is one I’ll always remember.”

CRIB CHATTER Making Home Ownership A Zipity Duda day!
Your 401k or IRA not making you enough dough and want to get in on today’s real estate deals? Working with investors is a specialty of Zipity Duda. Ever see my $35k HUD properties for sale and think; why am I not making some rental income? A Self Directed IRA might be an option you never knew was available allowing you to invest in real estate and set yourself up for a nice cushy retirement in Palm Springs or South Beach. The benefits of this program allow you to take control of your retirement account, freedom to invest in what you know and understand, drive higher returns, and provides for a larger range of investment choices. Here is how it works. Paul has $50,000 in his

401(k) and is interested in buying real estate. Working with Zipity Duda as his buyer’s agent, he locates a desirable property (commercial or residential) for $38k, moves funds and makes an offer that is accepted by the seller. The buyer on the contact is the custodian/ trustee, example “Advanta IRA Administration, LLC, fbo Paul IRA#1234”. All documents are read and approved by Paul. The custodian/trustee wires the $70k to the closing attorney, the purchase is recorded and the deed sent to the custodian/trustee and the purchase completed. All expenses, repairs, taxes, insurance etc. come out of the IRA and all revenues (rents, appreciation, etc.) go back into the IRA. The asset must be managed “passively” (no sweat equity, no comingling of funds with personal funds). Certain IRS rules apply so visit ZipityDuda.com for a list of them or invite us to do a lunch & learn for your company or social organization on this amazing opportunity!

PUBLISHER’S NOTE
GROwinG StROnGeR I
t’s amazing just how fast time can zip by! Two years ago I had a dream of giving my community something they could be proud of—something that would set Atlanta on fire. That dream now comes true every two weeks—52 times now to be exact. Some have called me crazy for starting a gay publication in the middle of a recession. Some tried (and still try) to sabotage our efforts, but we persevered in spite of it all. Over the past two years the most consistent feedback I get concerns our name, Fenuxe. One guy went as far as to tell me the spelling was queer. I agreed with him. We’re here, we’re spelled queer and it’s clear we ain’t goin’ nowhere! Our LGBT community is unique, and we think its magazine should be as well.
My vision for Fenuxe is not just to offer a fun and informative gay publication that delivers results to its advertisers, but to serve as an ambassador for the LGBT community which unites us all. It has personally been both a thrilling and humbling experience. After two years as a gay small business in today’s economy, I am proud to report that Fenuxe has remained faithful to the goal of making our community stronger. Most recently, Fenuxe celebrated the second annual Best Bachelor Auction, which is our tribute to the life-saving work of AID Atlanta. Considered a success in our first year, the Best Bachelor Auction raised $6,500 while the Fenuxe Bachelor Team raised an additional $8,500 at the AIDS Walk in October, bringing our total contribution for 2011 to $15,000. The 2012 Bachelor Auction alone has 44 : APRIL 19, 2012
already brought in over $17,000, and the donations are still coming in! I can’t wait to see how much we raise at the AIDS Walk this year! As part of Fenuxe’s commitment to our community we are also proud to be hosting our third annual Fenuxe 50 Awards in November. Our 50 honorees range from powerful politicians and engaging entertainers to local business owners and schoolteachers, who each have a deep commitment to our community. It is an honor to recognize those who make our community stronger and advance LGBT rights. Our community has a lot to celebrate with the recent strides toward civil rights and the end of policies such as DADT. As the publisher of a gay magazine I am also too often reminded of just how far we have
PUBLISHER’S NOTE yet to go. Just hours before our recent bachelor party, I was confronted by a man who was screaming gay-slurs who informed me that our “kind” is why God is directing his wrath toward America. Fortunately, we always have security and the hatefully pious man was escorted away from the event by the APD. Although I know he’s crazy, it still stung and reminded me that hate, discrimination and prejudice toward our community isn’t just OTP. I look forward to a future where hiring security for our events is an afterthought.
staff, our loyal readers, and our awesome advertisers. I’ve been blessed to have so many great people rooting us on as we explore gay Atlanta through our pages.
Producing a top-notch magazine every two weeks while maintaining our standards and goals is an exciting challenge. There are four things in my life that keep me going: God, my wonderfully dedicated
Now, on to planning more issues and events!
I publish Fenuxe Magazine because I love Atlanta’s LGBT community. I love meeting our readers at events and hearing your reactions to content in the magazine. Fenuxe is your magazine and I’m eternally grateful and humbled by the love Fenuxe gets from our community! With your support we will continue to grow and thrive.

Dear Mary,
Dear BLL,
For the past four years, my partner has made big plans for our anniversary and every single time it’s ended in disaster. We’ve experienced food poisoning, a mugging, a scuffle with drunk frat boys and a minor car wreck. Our fifth anniversary is swiftly approaching and I fear it just might kill us. He’s hinted that’s he has something special in the works, and, frankly, I’d rather sit home safe and sound. Should I tell him not to bother with celebrating this year or should I brave the consequences?
You guys have been together five years—don’t you like the excitement? Maybe your boyfriend’s been orchestrating these “catastrophes” so he can be your knight in shining armor. Alternatively, maybe he’s been trying to kill you, and he’s just really bad at it.
Bad Luck Lover
Potentially failed homicide attempts notwithstanding, maybe you should take the planning out of your boyfriend’s hands this year and orchestrate something that is simple, elegant and sure to come off without a hitch. Book a romantic harbor cruise for two and recruit a stranger from Craigslist to wear a diaper and sprinkle rose petals on you as he hangs, suspended by a pulley, over your dinner table like a little cupid. You could even give him a bow and arrow with strict instructions not to aim at people when he shoots his love projectiles. I have no idea how anything about that could go horribly wrong. A second option—one I’m always a fan of—is drugging him. Let him make his big plans and then slip a muscle relaxer and sleeping pill in his pre-date martini. Bonus: on your anniversary, you can watch whatever you want without input from him AND you get the entire pitcher of martinis to yourself. And you can wear sweat pants. Win-win-win. You can also make him feel guilty about this later by acting hurt that he passed out so early on your special night…this is really rather elegant. Or: relax and hope for the best. Enjoy that your darling thinks it’s so special you’ve spent another 365 days together that he wants to make a production over it, because it’s absolutely charming of him. Come what may, be sure to thank him for caring enough to try, given that you both survive the night.
If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail mary@fenuxe.com Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.

Holler poodles! It’s the Anniversary Issue, and it’s time to celebrate. I want to congratulate Tyler, William and the team at Fenuxe for another great year! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to write for Fenuxe and to connect with our community in a different way. You guys are the best! I also want to thank all of you for the nice comments and encouraging emails you’ve been sending me regarding my weight loss journey. I’ve been a bit surprised at the number of people cheering me on. By this time next year, I want to be celebrating an anniversary of reaching my goal. Make that “I will be celebrating reaching my goal!” I work out at Colony Square Athletic Club and am still looking for a personal trainer. If you can recommend someone to me, I’d appreciate it. I’m down a total of 24 pounds and can comfortably wear an XL shirt [down from XXL]. It feels so good to see tangible results and not just numbers. I especially like the comments when I’ve been in drag. “I can really tell you’ve lost weight in your face.” I think to myself, “Thanks, cause if you had said my hips I was gonna smack you.” In other news, I was happy to be an escort [sounds tawdry, huh?] for Rob Beck and Terry Hackworth for Fenuxe’s 10 Best Bachelors Auction benefiting AID Atlanta. A great time was had by all and the event raised more than $17,000. Congratulations to Yhon Sanchez who received the highest bid and to all the contestants who gave of their time. I will track you down meet with you each personally to force upon give you your sex with Mary Edith consolation prize and dinner at McDonalds a nice restaurant.

Thought of the week: I recently had a conversation with a guy who told me two friends of mine were upset with me. I initially thought I should address these guys specifically but after thinking about it further, I decided not to step into the drama pool. If someone truly has an issue with me, I would expect they would address me and not someone else. Whether you’re a double DD-lister like me or an A-lister like Oprah, there will always be haters. But if you’re a hater—just so you know, Marjorie— and your children will know... “What other people think of me is none of my business!” Pop! Love and lashes,
Mary Edith Pitts Please send your comments and feedback to me at maryedith99@gmail.com
