FENUXE 5.17.2012 We made a joke in our Spring Fashion Issue back in March that because Atlanta’s winter was so mild and temperatures were already warmer than average, spring didn’t seem to have much of an impact this year. Of course, as soon as the issue hit stands we saw a dip to cooler temperatures, followed by normal spring behavior and finally rain. Now, as we prepare to send out Summer Fashion Issue to print we have decided we might as well proceed as normal. Who knows what type of weather this summer will bring. All we know for sure is it’s time for sandals and sun. In this issue of Fenuxe you’ll find fabulous trends in fashion this season. From swimwear to skin care, we’ve found the best bets for surviving this upcoming scorching season. And as always, if fashion isn’t your bag, we’ve got the inside scoop on all things gay Atlanta for the upcoming weeks. As we ease into the summer season we hope you’ll have Fenuxe at hand for all your entertainment excursions.

spotting me at a hotlanta softball League game is easy. I’m the SPF 80-soaked fluffy furball in the wide-brimmed Aussie hat desperately trying to squeeze into a narrow strip of shade. In my younger days I’d sneak a few extra tanning sessions at the florist/tanning salon/ video store where I worked. (I’d also watch the adult films stashed in the back, but that’s another story.) My sun-loving habits stopped years ago after I started noticing its damaging effects on others. I prefer looking like a “Vampire Diaries” extra than a crackly leather monster. But I’m not going to preach to you about summer skin care. I’ll let an expert do that. Meet Anna Paré, M.D., the vice president of Dermatology Consultants and board certified dermatologist. For sun seekers, she recommends using daily sun protection of SPF 30 and above, while applying non-greasy and non-comedogenic formulas for the face. Be sure to reapply every four hours! And, if you’re one of those sporty gays, she says antibacterial soaps and exfoliation can be beneficial. Anna also suggests covering up with proper clothing, but I’m sure all the exhibitionists out there will ignore that one. Tsk, tsk. As for you men with the flawless skin, you suck. No, I’m kidding. I assume you’re no stranger to a dermatologist’s office, but you may want to rethink some of your regular procedures during hot weather. “Increased sun exposure can make your skin more light sensitive,” Anna says. “It may Kiss My Face Natural Mineral SPF 40 KissMyFace.com

be best to avoid any chemical peels or laser treatments because those can lead to increased pigmentation of the skin.” However, she says an occasional microdermabrasion, especially in the summer, is great for increased exfoliation. Frankly, the term “chemical peel” frightens me, so I’ve never considered it. Did you see the Sex and the City episode where Samantha had to wear a black veil after a peel? Uh, no thank you. (While we’re on the subject of fear, I have to admit I’m irrationally afraid of a stray softball shattering my eye socket. Jeez, I’m rambling. “Microdermabrasion”—that sounds fun. I can do that one.) So, now let’s wrap up with a rundown of Anna’s top skin care products. Of course everyone’s skin type varies, so be sure to talk with Anna or one of her professional peers. “I recommend using sun blocks from SkinCeuticals and La Roche-Posay,” says Anna, who also suggests over-the-counter products by Neutrogena. “The use of cleansers—like the Daily Bamboo Exfoliant by Eraclea Skincare— help exfoliate, revealing softer, healthier skin.” Now, thanks to Anna, we’re all properly educated and don’t have to worry about scary skin issues after hours on the ball field. (Just keep those foul balls away from my face.)

Are a Charity’s Best Friend imagine being surrounded by black diamonds, rose gold and shimmering silver as you mingle with some of Atlanta’s most charitable people. Sounds ritzy, doesn’t it? If you’re a regular or potential VIP of CHRIS Kids, the Atlanta organization that helps support homeless LGBT youth, you’d be welcome at the exclusive appreciation party on May 24 at David Yurman, a high-end jewelry company within Lenox Mall. You’re also invited if you’ve already purchased a VIP ticket to the organization’s June 9 Premiere Party. While you’re there admiring the gorgeous men’s collection ranging from cuff links and rings to belt buckles and time pieces be sure to rub elbows with Kathy Colbenson, chief executive officer of CHRIS Kids. Kathy admitted to Fenuxe that she’s excited about the event being held at David Yurman. “You’re talking to a woman who likes jewelry,” she said. “I think it’s a gorgeous place. We’re so grateful to David Yurman for hosting this event and caring for LGBT homeless youth.” With those kids in mind, don’t be afraid to splurge on a shiny new present for yourself. A portion of the proceeds from any sales that night will benefit CHRIS Kids. “We want to raise awareness of the plight of these kids,” Kathy said. “Events like this help raise awareness because these kids are largely invisible. You can’t drive through Little Five Points and be able to say, ‘It’s this kid or that kid.’”
16 : MAY 17, 3, 2012 2012
Kathy said contributions to CHRIS Kids help provide a safety net—as well as support and direction—for homeless LGBT kids. “If we don’t have the funds we can’t provide the service, and we can’t offer the help and support that makes all the difference [for these youth],” she continued. Another opportunity to support CHRIS Kids will be the cocktail party and silent auction on June 9 at Mason Murer Fine Art. More than 600 people are expected to attend, with the annual event raising more than $800,000 since 2002.

Sizzling Square Cut Swimwear wearing clothes during the georgia summer seems counterintuitive. But we must obey those pesky laws about “public indecency.” Blah, blah, blah. Thankfully we can rely on swimwear to help alleviate the scorching heat while avoiding jail time. But don’t just slap on those trunks you’ve been wearing for the last 10 years. Just because you’re covered doesn’t mean you’re not committing a fashion crime. We don’t want all the stylish gays talking behind your back at the pool party. So, we solicited swimwear advice from Todd Piercy, the selling executive manager of the men’s department at Bloomingdale’s Lenox Mall location. Fenuxe: What colors are popular with swimwear this season? Todd: Anything bold! Colors we are noticing more are turquoise, purple, yellow and red. Fenuxe: What swimwear trends should our readers know about? Todd: Solid bold colors, square cuts, and the short trunk. Diesel has a style that displays the “Diesel” name above the drawstring (which appears to look like underwear) attached to the short. We carry a bright red trunk and a bit longer purple one that both offer an amazing fit. If you are not into bright colors, Hugo Boss has a black square cut that looks great on most anyone. Fenuxe: What’s your favorite swimwear look? Todd: I like the mid-length trunk on myself paired with a tank in any bright color from Alternative Apparel. Of course the tank doesn’t stay on very long. Fenuxe: Where are your shoppers talking about wearing their swimwear this summer? Todd: P-Town, Miami, Cabo, Punta Cana and, of course, all the roof top pool parties in Midtown!

Letting Loose Pensacola Beach Memorial day Weekend
once May hits, the buzz about all-night parties, half-naked men and drunken make-out sessions start circulating through the South. Everybody’s talking about Pensacola Beach, Florida. If you’ve never been to Pensacola for Memorial Day Weekend, please allow us to feel you in. Think sun-kissed bodies in tiny swim trunks, endless cocktails and beer, high-energy dance parties and plenty of good gay times. We won’t delve into all the scandalous details, but we’ve heard many tales of debauchery that would make even Kathy Griffin blush. Brace yourself for a crowd in this westernmost city of the Florida Panhandle. The hot holiday weekend is expected to attract thousands of party-goers. That’s a lot of thongs and bikinis. Oh, you should also anticipate seeing lots of breasts. We’re not talking about man breasts, although you’ll see plenty variations of the manly chests. No, we speak of lady breasts. So don’t be frightened of the exposure. Trust us, their owners have no intention of pressing up against you. The official Memorial Day Weekend events are planned for Friday, May 25, through Sunday, May 27.
Splash Beach Fest will be held at Park East each day from noon to 7 p.m., with a welcome party set for 2 p.m. on Friday. An 11,000-squarefoot pavilion will house the beach festival, but feel free to bring your personal tents and beach gear. The daily events are free to the public and feature bar service, food, entertainment and a hip-shaking lineup of DJs. If you’re younger than 18, you’re out of luck. Sorry kiddo, these events are for beach lovers 18 and older. Save up your energy for Saturday night’s Wave Black Light Beach Bash at Park East. Running from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., the party will feature tunes by DJ Joe Gauthreaux and entertainment by New York’s drag sensation Bianca del Rio. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 cash at the door. Just in case you missed all that, here’s a quick breakdown: beach, men, ocean, cocktails, halfnaked men, sand, breasts, drunk men, music, men, men, men.

EVERYBODY’S FAMILY AT THE WAFFLE PALACE Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture
have you ever made a late-night visit to the waffle house on cheshire bridge? Some patrons are clubbers stumbling into the 24-hour eatery from Onyx, Heretic and Jungle. Some are truckers just passing through while others are eccentric regulars. Say what you will about Waffle House, but you can’t deny it brings people together. And, more often than not, that scattered, covered and chunked combination of people makes for an interesting experience. Writing partners Larry Larson and Eddie Lee certainly seem to think so. Inspired by the unique atmosphere spawned by the Georgiabased restaurant chain, the duo wrote the play “The Waffle Palace,” playing now through July 1st at Horizon Theatre. “I kept coming across articles and news reports about various happenings and events that seemed to be unique to the place, and it was described in one article as a ‘Weirdness Magnet,’” Larry said. “I started jotting down ideas for a plot and characters and pitched the idea to Lisa [Adler, co-artistic director of Horizon] and then to Eddie as a possible project for us to partner on, and the rest is history, as they say.” During the writing process, Larry and Eddie added a drag queen character named Vivienne after hearing about a regular drag gathering at an Atlanta Waffle House. But don’t assume these two straight guys are using Vivienne as a cheap laugh. “Her presence and her bonding with the electrical lineman [character] goes beyond the Waffle Palace,” Eddie said. “I wanted to say something about the South, about how disparate people relate to each other on a basic, very Southern level. In the scene, you have a drag queen and an African-American lineman from a small town in north Georgia, but their Southern roots connect them.”
34 : MAY 17, 2012
Eric Mendenhall, the straight actor playing Vivienne, said the character brings a human element to the show. “She is full of love and life and humor, and she lights up a room instantly,” he said. “The scene with Vivienne culminates in an unexpected way, and she shares a moment with her ‘family’ at the Waffle Palace that is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. I think it’s a special time on stage that drag queens and NASCAR fans alike will relate to.” To prepare for his role, Eric has watched several documentaries on drag queens and tested his skills at walking in heels. “I have to wear stilts at one point for a different character, and I tell you, give me stilts over high heels any day of the week,” he said. But as Vivienne says, ‘Drag queens don’t wear sensible shoes.’”

Drag Queen of the Underworld
Sharon Needles Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture
Like a fresh wound spilling precious blood, Sharon Needles oozes charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. So it’s no wonder the Pittsburgh queen cast a spell on me, along with the rest of the world. Sharon intrigued me even before season four of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” aired, but it was during the first episode I became a true fan. As part of the first main challenge, the contestants fought off a swarm of drag queen zombies as they scavenged for items to construct an apocalyptic runway look. Once Sharon uttered to one of the zombies, “Honey, I’m on your side,” I was hooked. Needless to say, I squealed like a sacrificial pig when the macabre maven won the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar. And much to my delight, I spoke with the deliciously devilish Sharon the day after her win. Shannon: So what are you going to do with the $100,000 prize? Sharon: I’m going to get so much plastic surgery Chad Michaels is going to look natural. Shannon: What traits helped you win the crown? Sharon: It’s simple. Drag was always meant to be the celebrity of every city’s gay culture. Drag queens are the clowns in a world full of hate and oppression. I think I just reminded people that drag is fun. Drag makes you make a fool of yourself on stage to entertain your friends and community. It’s not something that was designed to polarize or even to be perfected. Drag is just a circus designed to entertain people in the middle of the night in a smoky bar after a couple of cocktails. I think I not only reminded RuPaul but America as well that drag is for fun. Shannon: How are you dealing with the fame? Sharon: It goes back and forth. It’s something I’ve always wanted. Fame is something I’ve always been obsessed with my entire life. Now I have it, and it’s hard to remember why I wanted it. It definitely carries more of responsibility than I thought it was going to. It’s a taxing concept but it’s something I’m more than willing to accept. When you don’t have fame, you want it because you think it 52 : MAY 17, 2012
is ultimate Xanax to life. You think it will financially settle you. It will emotionally calm you. It will provide you with a sense of status and comfort that can’t be matched by anything else on this Earth. But fame is a magnifying glass. It doesn’t deliver what you thought it once promised. It forces you to see the flaws and beauty within yourself. Shannon: Who was your favorite regular judge? Sharon: Oh, Michelle Visage. Most definitely. Being such a fan of the show, I’d watch RuPaul’s Drag Race, and every time I saw Michelle Visage I thought she came straight out of a Transylvanian castle from a vintage Disney movie. She was sheer evil—just a wicked bitch of the West Coast. She made me nervous. But within the first day of working with her I saw so much of myself in her—this kind of giddy, laughy, campy, Gothic woman. It was very much me, and I love Michelle Visage to death. Shannon: Who was your favorite guest judge? Sharon: Oh, Elvira, of course! Shannon: That’s what I thought. Sharon: To be accepted on the show was mind boggling enough but to walk in the first day and be chased down by zombies and vomiting up [fake] blood in front of idols like
INTERVIEW RuPaul and Elvira was out of this world. I can sincerely say that one of the most bizarre and best days of my life. Shannon: What was your favorite challenge? Sharon: It’s really hard to decide. I loved the first challenge because I got to show the side of me that is very devoted to horror and gore. I also loved the Snatch Game where I portrayed Michelle Visage. But I think the episode where I proved to America that I was more than a one-trick pony was the Frock the Vote challenge. I play stupid on TV but I’m very obsessed with culture and media and the news. I used that strongly to my advantage. And I was sickening! Shannon: What was your least favorite challenge? Sharon: My least favorite was the Hope Floats challenge where we had to take boats and decorate them with one color of the gay pride flag. If gray, black, beige or mauve were in the rainbow flag I would have really enjoyed that challenge. Unfortunately we had to work with the really bright colors, and I hate color. I don’t like wearing it. Of course I get green, which was the one color Michelle Visage just can’t stand on a drag queen. Luckily I was safe but it was a close call. And you know what? RuPaul is running out of ideas when you’re strutting down the runway in a f***ing boat. [Laughs]
with my boyfriend, my best friend and my mother and it was a great full-circle moment for someone who has dealt with a rough-andtumble life. It was great for one night to feel like the most important person on the planet. Shannon: A few months ago Raja visited and asked a packed crowd at Burkhart’s who should win Drag Race. Everyone shouted “Sharon Needles,” so Atlanta loves you. You’ll have to visit. Sharon: I’m such a fan of Atlanta drag, which really pushes the barriers of excess. Your city has spawned such greats as Lady Bunny and RuPaul herself. So I know I’d be in good company in your city. Shannon: What are you going to next? Sharon: My schedule is jam-packed full of tour dates. I woke up this morning after three hours of sleep ready to create and ready to push myself. I’m ready to move on to the next adventure. I want to start creating music and do more acting. Any way I can make a public fool out of myself for the American people I’m there.
Shannon: After watching the show, did anything surprise you? Sharon: We never witnessed other contestants’ confessionals. I know a lot of the girls this season were shocked by some of the things Phi Phi said. I wasn’t shocked by anything. Shannon: What fascinates you about plastic surgery? Sharon: I think anything unnatural looks really beautiful. I just love that we live in an age where you can be your own piece of clay. I’m also very interested in what goes into the mentality of people who take such drastic steps to look completely different. I think everyone has insecurities about the way they look. It takes a very special person to have themselves sliced open in the name of vanity. Shannon: What was going through your mind in the final moments of the finale? Sharon: I was just so proud of myself for getting as far into the competition as I did. Campy queens and comedy queens tend not to get the recognition they deserve on this program. I was just so pleased with how far RuPaul allowed me to go. It was almost numbing. When I found out I won I was FENUXE.COM : 53

askMARY
Dear Mary,
Dear BIG,
I’ve been overweight for years, and I’m trying my best to get in shape this year. The weight loss options are endless, and everyone has a different opinion on the best way to shed the pounds. I’m simply overwhelmed by which healthy path to follow. What’s your preferred method of maintaining a healthy weight?
First of all, thank you for assuming I’m svelte. This picture is from the waist up, I could be packing anything behind or below.
Sincerely, Beefy Indecisive Gay
The “Biggest Loser” recommends workout sessions that include things like having people place quarters on a plate on your outstretched hand until the weight of the quarters causes you to drop the plate (I’m simplifying). I personally recommend you pull your couch outside and drag it in circles around your house until you pass out from exhaustion; it really engages the glutes. Follow that with a conscientious liquid diet (clear liquors only!) and watch the pounds melt away.
The great Karl Lagerfeld (famous for designing Chanel’s signature looks for a generation and losing a Lagerfeld of weight in order to fit into size four women’s jeans … I just pulled your gay card if you didn’t know that) suggests existing solely on an IV of Diet Coke plugged right into your butt (I’m paraphrasing).
Or you could embrace your body, shortcomings and all. Don’t let naysayers tell you it’s unhealthy to be overweight—I heard Paula Deen just released a diabetes drug and I bet it is delicious.
If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail mary@fenuxe.com Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.

Just got back from the second week of Brain Freeze Trivia and all I can say is WOW! We had such a great turnout and so much fun. Bill Berdeaux rocks as our trivia master! If you haven’t checked it out yet, I’m hosting trivia every Monday night at Blake’s from 11-12:30, and we give away $250 CASH as well as prizes for each of the round winners, too. (Sponsored by Fenuxe Magazine). If you’d like to be a sponsor, contact me at maryedith99@gmail.com. Saturday night I was excited to attend the HRC dinner for the first time. I got to meet Congressman John Lewis for a second time and was pleased he remembered our first meeting at the Fenuxe 50 celebration. Gee, do I make an impression? Congressman Lewis really is an impressive man—he stared at me intently and gave me the feeling I was the only person in the room. I forgot for a moment I was in full regalia and just enjoyed our oneon-one interaction. He is such a compelling man full of wisdom and perseverance. Highlights of the evening for me included Frenchie Davis who tore the house down with a couple of music selections, Sean Hayes who received an award, HRC President Joe Solmonese who is leaving HRC to work on Obama’s re-election campaign and Tammy Baldwin who is running for the senate in Wisconsin. The event was held at the Hyatt downtown, and I must say it was pretty swanky. My favorite comical moment was when the inevitable bathroom break was needed, and I traipsed into the men’s room to relieve my bladder. The attendant wasn’t quite sure if he should call security or follow me into

a stall. The greetings from the men at the urinals must have squelched his concerns because as I exited, he smiled and said, “Have a nice evening.” Thought of the week: “Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible.” Years ago my therapist shared with me the notion that the world was a place of abundance yet so many people operate from a scarcity mentality. Guess what? There is enough to go around—we don’t have to throw someone under the bus to get what we want. When we stop allowing limiting beliefs to keep us stuck, we begin to see the abundance life has to offer. Love and lashes,

INTERVIEW
ANDRES CUERVO: SONG & SOUL South american star reaches the masses through his voice and actions Latin singing sensation andres cuervo has eagerly embraced the hiV/aids cause and developed a campaign in the u.s. called “pay it for-red”–named after the iconic red ribbon–to fight the disease by motivating folks to get tested. His foundation, “Saber Amar” (Know How to Love), is in full force promoting awareness and raising funds for organizations already in place across America. Andres debuts his national campaign in Atlanta on May 31 at 6 p.m. at the Wimbish House. Funds raised will benefit Positive Impact, whose mission is to eliminate the risk of HIV transmission and to empower those affected through culturally competent and inclusive prevention, education, mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Andres graciously sat down with us to discuss his visit to Atlanta and his passions, both professional and personal. Here is a sampling of what he had to say. For the full interview, please visit Fenuxe.com. Dino: Andres, thank you for sharing your inspiring story with us. Where are you from and where do you live? Andres: Hello, Dino and Fenuxe readers. I am from Barranquilla, Colombia, and now live in Miami. Dino: Tell us a little bit about your career. Andres: When I first came to the States to chase my dreams of becoming a singer, I made ends meet through modeling. Eventually, after hard work and persistence, my first album was produced in 2007 with the help of the famous music producer Rudy Perez. My first album was a success and included two number one hits. My new album, “Este Soy Yo” (This Is Me), is a reflection of who I am. Dino: Tell me about the Saber Amar Foundation. What has driven you to take on such a huge project? Andres: It was crucial to my existence to establish this not-for-profit. I realized that anyone can make a difference. One doesn’t have to be a multimillionaire to make an impact. I began this foundation to give back to the universe, to 74 : MAY 17, 2012
give back to the world I love. Right now my number one mission within Saber Amar is to get folks tested for HIV/AIDS. There is a lot of work to be done, especially within the Latino community. Together we can break down the barriers and begin to help those in need. Saber Amar embraces many causes and is culturally diverse. I have also written the “Saber Amar” single to help bring light to these important causes. The song is not what you expect for a charity; it is a dance song meant to make you feel good, make you feel beautiful and connected to the world around you. We are in the midst of creating the music video, and I will be performing it live in Atlanta. Dino: Thank you, Andres. I urge our readers not miss this fantastic event on Thursday, May 31, at the Wimbish House on Peachtree Street. Libations sponsored by Cuervo Tequila and BV Wines, bites by Food Network reality star Chef Alexis Hernandez and Andres Cuervo singing live. All for $10, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Positive Impact Atlanta. Buy your tickets at www.xorbia.com/e/pi/ AndresCuervo.
