FENUXE 6.14.2012 Gay marriage is without question today’s single
most highlighted discussion in our struggle for equal rights. One detail in the marriage argument which is often overlooked is the proclamation of love in our relationships. It seems the focus is consistently about having the same rights of the straight community instead of whether or not our love is actually valid. The reason for this is obviously because we have the ability to love, there’s no argument there. We choose to love however and whenever we want without the consent of anyone else. In this year’s partnership and ceremonies issue instead of continuing the discussion of equal rights and what we have not yet achieved, we chose to focus on love and the beautiful chemistry which occurs when two lovers find one another. Although the love and marriage discussion is a battlefield at times, in the end it’s a beautiful thing and must be celebrated. We hope you’ll use this issue to assist in celebrating the love in your life.

Wedding Wear
Wrap-up
Deciding what to wear for a regular night out is tough enough. Choosing an ensemble for your wedding might just send you over the edge. Put a call in to your therapist if you like, but we recommend seeking guidance from an expert. Meet Brandon Bryson, an Atlanta stylist and cast member on TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids.” We asked Brandon what you should wear when you walk down the isle. Fenuxe: What trends are you seeing in tuxes and wedding gowns this year? Brandon: For wedding gowns, I’m seeing a lot of lace. Since the royal wedding, brides have been studying what Kate Middleton was wearing on her special day. We are seeing the re-invention of the full sleeve and even more simple A-line dress styles. About six or seven years ago the ball gown made a major comeback. Well, it seems the ladies are favoring the more simple and classic styles that you would see in the 1960s, but with a modern flair. Tuxes usually don’t really ever change, but one thing that we have seen is the straight-legged pant. Men should always know the order of the ties—formal: black bow tie; semi-formal or casual: regular tie (Windsor knot). The suits are starting to lean more towards European suits, such as Ermenegildo Zegna and Z by Zegna. The look is all about being tailored. Also, do not wear a colored vest! It looks like prom! Fenuxe: What are your suggestions for proper wedding attire? Brandon: I would recommend a couple always keep whatever look they are trying to accomplish timeless. You want to wear something you are not going to regret twentyfive years later. Does that mean you have to pull out your grandparents’ attire? No! It simply means you need to keep it classy 16 : JUNE 14, 2012
with a splash (not a downpour) of modern flair. With weddings come life-long pictures. You want to stay away from dramatic trends and fads and stick with something classic. For two guys, I would recommend both get their suits tailored. A neat idea I have seen is both men wearing the exact same suit but in two different colors. One might have a suit in black with an ivory tie or vice-versa. I personally would have both men in identical suits, to signify they are one. For lesbians it’s a bit different. I have seen couples wear the exact same wedding dress, different dresses or one wear a tux and the other wear a dress. With dresses you always have more options (long, short, fabric, color etc.) Fenuxe: What are some creative ways a gay couple can customize their ceremony? Brandon: Monograms! Nothing says you are a couple more than monogramed items at the wedding. Choose a nice, simple and creative font with your initials and put them on things like napkins, table confetti, tops of chairs (small not large), save the date cards and wine glasses (frosted font). Two aisles for the ceremony continues to be a hot trend. This gives each bride or groom their own space; they love the twobecomes-one metaphor.

THE CONFUSING WORLD OF
Marriage Equality “Sweetie, do you want to spend Christmas with your crazy family or mine?” “Babe, should we grab cocktails tonight or stay home and watch ‘True Blood’?” “Honey, who was that sleazy guy you were talking to at the gym?” Questions inevitably arise when you’re part of a couple. While some queries offer obvious solutions, others present perplexing predicaments. Take laws regarding marriage equality, for example. “It’s confusing, even for lawyers and family law practitioners,” said Jeff Cleghorn, a partner at the law firm Kitchens New Cleghorn in Atlanta. “So we thought it would be helpful to have a free community forum to try to explain what all this means to an LGBT family here in Georgia.” The firm’s Marriage Equality Forum on June 21 aims to discuss the rapidly changing laws related to marriage equality across the country and what it means to Georgia’s LGBT citizens and families. “Right now there is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding as to what you can and cannot do under the law relating to marriage equality and LGBT families in general,” Cleghorn said. Between same-sex marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships and state bans, it’s no wonder everyone is confused. In addition to Washington D.C., states recognizing same-sex marriage include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York. States allowing civil unions include Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Both Washington and Maryland have passed legislation allowing same-sex marriage. Maryland’s laws go into effect in January 2013, and Washington was forced to put the legislation to a November vote thanks to same-sex marriage opponents. And now questions start to arise. What does it mean for a gay or lesbian couple in Georgia who goes to Iowa and gets married? What are the eligibility requirements in these other states for non-residents to get married in those states?
18 : JUNE APRIL3, MAY 14, 5,2012 2012 2012
What does it mean if you get married in a different state and you live in Georgia and your relationship ends? How can you get a divorce? If you can’t get a divorce in Georgia, what does that mean to you legally? How is your family impacted if your relationship ends? For Cleghorn, answering those questions falls under a topic he finds of professional interest. He has worked for years providing legal assistance to LGBT military personnel, and despite the successful repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the marriages of gay and lesbian service members aren’t recognized by the military. “We’re continuing that fight to obtain full equality within the Armed Forces,” he said. “It’s just basically a passion for gay equality.”

NIGHTLIFE
A COUPLE WHO ‘DRAGS’ TOGETHER, STAYS TOGETHER Eighteen years ago, Rick Westbrook and John Jeffrey met on a blind date. “John actually stood me up the first time,” Rick said. “We were supposed to meet at a bar, and he never showed up. He called the next night and apologized and offered to cook me dinner. We’ve been together ever since.” A few years later the couple joined two of their longtime friends for a party. There was one catch though—the host requested a few of the guests perform a drag show. Little did they know that night would birth the annual East Point Possums Show.
Rick, left, and John
“It all started in a backyard,” Rick recalled. “It was 50 to 100 people and we were just doing it for fun. People would throw money on the stage. We thought, ‘Let’s just donate this to charity.’” For the next few years, the group would attend a PALS event and anonymously donate a big wad of money. “Around the fourth year it got up to $800-$900, and we knew we couldn’t donate it anonymously anymore,” Rick said. “So we started advertising the show, and it was so big we moved it down to East Point.” Rick wasn’t sure if East Point would embrace a colorful gathering of campy queens, so he fudged a bit about the event’s true identity. “I told them I was going to have a Shakespearean variety show downtown,” he said with a laugh. “Now I just go in and say it’s time for the drag show!” Over the years the East Point Possums Show has grown into a highly anticipated annual event. The audience has grown to more than 700 and includes everyone from straight to gay and old to young. “People bring their babies to the show,” Rick said. Considering its popularity, it’s no wonder the show has raised almost $60,000 for local charities, and this year the Possums will donate the proceeds to the Philip Rush Center. “We consider it doing good work through bad drag,” said Rick, who expects at least 28 drag performers this year. “We call it Booger Drag.”

Can I Hug You? Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture
ONE MOMENT DURING her daughter’s wedding made Jeannie Senter nearly cry. Certainly emotions ran high as Jeannie’s daughter, Erin, married her long-time girlfriend, Brooke, last June in Washington D.C. Even the sight of the United States Capitol in the backdrop as the women legally wed one another undoubtedly had Jeannie grabbing for a Kleenex. But it was during the wedding reception Jeannie encountered an unexpected moment that particularly touched her. “I was dancing with a young fellow who was one of my daughter’s friends,” said Jeannie, who lives just north of the city of Decatur. “I said something, and he said, ‘Are you a PFLAG mom?’ I said ‘yes’ and he said, ‘Can I hug you?’” She obliged, and her dance partner said, “My parents love me but they don’t accept me.”
“It meant so much to him that other moms accept their kids,” Jeannie recalled. “I was almost in tears because there are so many young people whose parents don’t accept them. That was a special moment.” Although she had no issues with her daughter’s sexual orientation when Erin came out, Jeannie admitted she had wondered if she somehow had influenced her daughter’s lesbianism. “I was a single parent since my daughter was two,” she said. “I initially thought I must have been too strong of a woman.” After joining PFLAG about five years ago, Jeannie finally realized that wasn’t the case. “I think every parent initially feels like they did something wrong,” said Jeannie, whose daughter-in-law coincidentally works for PFLAG National. “I realized that wasn’t any part of it. I would say that’s how PFLAG helped me the most.”

Homolicious Honeymoons Just like vodka, gay couples come in a variety of flavors. Some pairs identify as smooth and sophisticated while others consider themselves sweet and fruity. When these diverse duos decide to celebrate their committed relationships, it’s practical to assume their honeymoons will reflect their personal tastes. Below you’ll find five types of couples, along with our suggestions for the ideal newlywed getaway.
The Leather Lovers Strap up for a sexy sabbatical in San Francisco. The perfect hunky holiday falls on Sunday, September 23, with the return of the Folsom Street Fair, which touts itself as the world’s largest leather event. Nothing says “Just Married” better than a pair of matching harnesses. The Power Partners Mixing business and pleasure is simply the smart thing to do. After networking around the Chicago Loop, it’s time to wind down in the Windy City. Stop by the Coffee and Tea Exchange in Boystown to relax with an amaretto blend or a chamomile. Then enjoy a decadent French dinner at Paris in Chicago, followed by cocktails at the popular gay bar Sidetrack. The Party Duo For a honeymoon full of celebratory toasts and thumping music, South Beach is the place to be. After grinding on the dance floors of the city’s many bars, rest up on the popular gay beach at 12th Street and Ocean Drive. The ultimate South Beach affair occurs November 21-26 with White Party Week, so plan accordingly. The Manly Beaus Pack up the camping gear and head to the newly opened Oz Campground (formerly Lumberjacks) in Unadilla, Georgia. Spend the night under the stars in one of the primitive tent sites or cozy up in a cabin. The Artsy Sweethearts What can be more romantic than an art-filled weekend in The City of Roses? Creativity thrives in Portland, Oregon. Stroll through galleries of the Alberta Arts District or see a gay-themed show by Triangle Productions, one of the city’s oldest theater companies. For fall newlyweds, the Portland Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in October is a must! 28 : JUNE 14, 2012

Until Gerard Butler proposes to me, I’ll just have to settle for watching other newlywed lovers feed slices of decadent wedding cake to one another. As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen my fair share of this time-honored practice. Although many couples stick to tradition when it comes to cutting the cake, most forge their own paths where dessert design is concerned. And a signature cake wouldn’t be the same without a topper that reflects the couple’s sense of style. Below you’ll find some of my favorite selections for LGBT cake toppers. For traditional couples, I recommend these classic toppers. I’m convinced the lesbian figurines were fashioned after Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. And, obviously the topper with two grooms is Gerard and me because my clumsy tail would fall off the cake. Wedding Collectibles.com Adorable newlyweds should consider these custom toppers handmade right here in Atlanta. Don’t you just want to pinch their cheeks? TheSmallObject.com Want to be immortalized? Younique Boutique will sculpt your face onto one of five “gay” characters for a personalized topper. I wonder if they could create a Spartan character for my Gerard. Tybinc.com 30 : JUNE MAY 3, 14, 2012 2012
Photographs always grab my attention, so this glass photo vase topper is a winner in my book. Perhaps seeing my face staring back at me would dissuade me from gorging myself on cake. No, probably not. GayWeddings.com

BACHELOR TIPS
The
Dos & Don’ts
YOUR BIG OLE GAY BACHELOR PARTY
Ah freedom, it’s a marvelous thing, especially when it’s in limited supply. You, however, have decided to get hitched and part with independence. You’re making the commitment, and the big day is on its way. But before you go consecrating your love for all eternity a party is in order. Tonight is your last night of fancy freedom, playful gatherings and purely inappropriate behavior. Tonight is your bachelor party. But how do you celebrate your last hurrah without overstepping the boundaries of your relationship? What is considered “inappropriate behavior”? Let us help you answer these commonly asked party predicaments.
Dos
Who to invite?
Do invite your liberal siblings and childhood friends. Maybe even your purely plutonic dorm mate from college.
Don’ts
Don’t invite anyone who can be found within a three-mile radius on your mobile phone app. Trust us, he didn’t log on to help you celebrate your union.
Where to go? Do frequent your favorite neighborhood drinking holes, stomping grounds and grub hubs. Familiarity is key to making a relaxed memorable night.
Don’t head to the local mega club so you can compete with various brides and their entourages. Haven’t you seen “Bridezilla”? Bride hogs = cray cray.
How much to drink? Do pace yourself and quit once you’ve obtained a delightful buzz. Your buddies are here to help celebrate you and they are depending on you to be their leader. Take your time and end the night feeling accomplished.
Don’t test the limitations of your alcohol tolerance by partaking in such drinking games as “I never” and “Beeropoly.” This will inevitably end in a game over. Besides, a queasy groom doesn’t photograph well, and vomit tends to dampen the mood of any special occasion.
What other activities can take place? Do plan for great conversation, embarrassing story-telling and footing the bill for your broke-ass friends.
Don’t indulge in a wild, last-minute trip to a foreign country with your adventurous pals. You’ll wake up one morning in an ice-filled tub with a cell phone duct-taped to your hand.
Who to thank at the end of the night? Do text your friends who gave you meaningful and cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Don’t text your ex letting him know how much happier you are now without him and how your life is so grand but you may be a little lonely right now so stop by, maybe?
With all these items squared away and set in motion you’ll be sure to have a killer time without a killer hangover or killer regrets buried in a heap of killer guilt. Hurrah! 34 : JUNE 14, 2012

Long Live
the Gay Couple
None of them ever uttered the phrase “love at first sight.” They didn’t need to say what their actions confirmed. Since the day they first met, each of the four metro Atlanta couples has stuck together through thick and thin.
Roger & Lance It was about midnight when Lance spotted Roger at a party on Thanksgiving. Lance’s attention had wandered away from a conversation with his friends to the tall gentlemen who had just entered the room. He quickly informed them the person he planned to marry had just arrived. Roger noticed Lance looking in his direction and struck up a conversation. “We talked, we laughed, we danced,” Roger recalled. “We have been dancing for 23 years now.”
Chris & Jon The beginning of “Chris and Jon” is a virtual tale. They first met on AOL in 2001 and kept their chats on a friendly basis, as both had boyfriends at the time. A few years later, they bumped into one another on Yahoo Messenger, but this time they were single. “We finally met for dinner on April 3, 2003, and have been inseparable ever since,” Chris said. “We celebrate this day as our anniversary still.”
Brian & Troy Another online love story belongs to Brian and Troy. They were both living in Las Vegas when their paths crossed on the Internet. “We were chatting, and I simply asked if he would like to come over and have a cup of coffee with me and he did,” Brian said. The two will be together seven years in August.
Stephen & Alan A dance at Saint Mark United Methodist Church brought this pair together. Stephen was a member of the church and attended the dance just to have some fun. Alan had been invited to the social gathering by a gym buddy. “Neither of us was looking for a relationship,” said Stephen, who celebrated his ninth anniversary with Alan in March. Continued on page 46
44 : JUNE 14, 2012
PROFILE STICKING TOGETHER
A common thread among these couples is their willingness to openly communicate. “It’s the bedrock of our relationship,” Jon said. “Chris and I don’t always see eyeto-eye, but it builds a solid mutual respect and trust that endures.” “If we are wrong for something that we have said or done to the other we apologize and talk it out,” Brian said. “Stephen and I are better now than we used to be,” Alan said. “But it still is challenging to ‘hear’ what the other is saying and make sure the other is hearing and understanding the one wanting to be heard.” Local psychotherapists Jim Sacco and Brett Rozen, who both specialize in gay relationships, couldn’t agree more about honest dialogue between partners. “When people are not open about their feelings, their partners often resort to mind-reading in an attempt to guess what their feeling based on their behavior. Much of the time, they’re wrong,” Brett said.
emotion to cloud his judgment. “Being very different in our thoughts and who we are as individuals has surely played a key role in our longevity as a couple,” Brian said. Chris and Jon agree. “We both bring something unique to the table, and appreciate each other for it,” Chris said. Jon added, “We don’t try to change each other. Our individual qualities are what brought us together in the first place, and we strive to keep that while we grow together.”
VARYING FACTORS
Two of the couples identified a few interesting aspects of their relationships that helped contribute to their longevity. “We have a very broad social network,” Stephen said. “A lot of long-term couples we know tend to isolate themselves with a core group of friends and activities. Depending on the group we’re with, we are the rich ones or the poor ones, the old ones or the twinks, the newbies or the hosts. It helps us keep our perspective on who and where we are at the moment.” Lance and Roger recognized financial planning as a valuable contributor. “Taking steps to protect ourselves during difficult financial times has proven to provide a stronger sense of commitment,” Lance said.
“When a couple is committed to making a relationship work, regardless of issues, it will usually work.”
“It takes bravery to be honest,” said Jim, who advised that the starting point for communication needs to be making an agreement about monogamy, or a variation of it. He also said partners should listen to one another, not to prove them wrong, but to understand what it’s like to be in the other’s shoes.
OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Another factor in their success as couples has been embracing their differences. Stephen tries to be three steps ahead of the pack, while Alan claims to be oblivious to anything outside the immediate task at hand. “We accept each other for who he is and encourage the behavior we want,” Stephen said. With a theatre background, Brian admitted he was the dramatic one in the family, opposed to the reserved Troy, who doesn’t allow 46 : JUNE 14, 2012
PARTING WISDOM
“Healthy relationships happen because there are two healthy individuals,” Jim advised. “Each person must do the work to have the life they want. The more whole we are and more resolved we are before we hook up with someone it’s going to result in a healthier partnership.” Brett suggested treating a relationship like a rare plant. “If you don’t tend to and water it, it will eventually die,” he said. “When a couple is committed to making a relationship work, regardless of issues, it will usually work.”

askMARY
Dear Mary,
Dear PH,
My social calendar is full of pool parties this summer, which makes me a bit nervous. With the combination of sun, sexy men and alcohol, I’m admittedly a hot mess. On an ordinary night out, I know my booze limit. But it’s something about a pool party that turns me into a sloppy disaster. Last year alone I nearly broke up a couple, toppled over a gas grill and trampled a perfectly innocent hydrangea bush. Do you have any advice for proper pool party etiquette?
Wait how are you supposed to act at pool parties? This all sounds pretty on the level to me. Have you ever considered you’re not the one with the problem? I think the first step to cooler pool parties is insisting you don’t have a problem– everyone else is just being a jerk.
Help! Poolside Havoc
A second option, one I’m always fond of, is to attend parties under an alter ego. Apply your handy false mustache (which you previously used to fool an ex-lover who moved into your apartment next to you in November 2010) with an extra dollop of water-proof glue, get your lace-front wig on straight and head out. If you feel like your disguise is a little transparent since you are clearly you in a false mustache and wig, have a few drinks and look in the mirror again. You won’t know who the hell that is looking back at you.
For the sake of reducing casualties, though, you may have to augment your behavior, as horrible as that sounds. I suggest a firm rule of planting your ass in a chaise lounge before you start drinking. It is nearly impossible to get out of one of those things sober, but after four margaritas there’s no chance you’ll be able to do it without help. Warn friends beforehand to leave you chaise-bound; how much trouble can you possibly get in from a lounge chair?
If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail mary@fenuxe.com Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.

Holler poodles! Brain Freeze Trivia is a hit at Blake’s, and I just want to say thanks to Bill Berdeaux and the staff and management for inviting me to be a part of all the fun. Don’t forget we give away $250 cash every Monday with additional round prizes provided by Fenuxe Magazine. Blake’s is definitely the place to be on Monday nights, and trivia is always followed by the fabulous girls of Drag on the Edge. At the beginning of the year I told you I would be honest about my ups and downs on my weight loss journey. I feel like the last month I have been floundering. I gained six pounds back and have not exercised like I should be doing. I feel a little discouraged because I had been working out consistently and eating better but the weight was coming off so slow. [I have an under-active thyroid that contributes to a low metabolism as well]. It has made me realize I need the help of a trainer. I’ve been told you can do cardio as much as you want but you need to build muscle in order to burn fat and increase your metabolism. At this point it has all become a little too overwhelming for me, and it makes me want to quit. Isn’t it funny how one moment you can feel in control and everything is going along just fine but in the course of a few weeks you find yourself slipping? But if you know me, you know I’m not a quitter. I’m choosing to remember how far I’ve come this year and that this is a process. I didn’t gain weight overnight, and it won’t come off overnight. I am recommitting to my goals and asking for help. YES!! I am asking for help. If you work out at Colony Square and would like to be a workout partner, I would

be very interested in talking to you. (My email is below) Thought of the week. There was a post circulating the Internet recently called 15 Things To Give Up To Be Happy. My favorite of these is “Give up your need for control”! Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you—situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are loved ones, coworkers, or just strangers you meet on the street, just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are, and you will see how much better that will make you feel. “By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go.
