It’s a beautiful time for a romantic trip north to the blue ridge mountains. Pick some apples at merciers orchard or imbibe in some of the best fudge in the south at three sisters.

Shannon Jenkins ASSOCIATE WRITER, LIFESTYLE & CULTURE Shannon@fenuxe.com

Secretly (just between you and me), the real reason I love this time is because I can finally start wearing sweaters, coats, jackets, and scarves! Fashion is all about expression, not about labels, and as gay men and women many of us grew up in homes where expression was not only not encouraged, but rebuked. So, enjoy this time when you can express yourself. Don’t worry about what other people think or say - express yourself in a way that makes you happy.

“Great Expectations” I believe I am among the most fortunate people I know. The reason: I am part of gay media, writing about issues important to my community and me. I also have the great honor of finding myself in your hands, on your coffee table, and scattered throughout our fair city. For all of that I want to express my profound gratitude for making myself, and Fenuxe Magazine, a part of your daily life. As we begin this new relationship I feel it is important to establish the expectations and principles by which I will do my best to operate, because I value you; I value my unique position in the community; and I value this leap of faith that Fenuxe Magazine has taken by placing me in this role. I now humbly ask you to do the same. Photo by Richie Arpino

I vow I will always treat you and our subject matter with respect. In return I hope you will hold me as well as all media outlets accountable for any misinformation that is spread. I also hope you will engage in open communication with us: telling us when we are wrong or miss the mark, and praising what work you think merits it. My work will be quality, my reporting informative, and my language intelligent. Unlike many members of the media today I will do all that I can to share with you my opinions while providing you with informed opinions that differ from my own. I am only human, of course, and can only hope my devotion and commitment to the never-ending task of reporting valuable information accurately merit your patience in those times I may fall short. Finally, I vow to accept you as you are while challenging you to be better: more informed; more engaged; and more aware of local, national, and international issues that are important to our community. I leave you with a relevant quote by a writer whose works continue to inspire us generations later: “Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There’s no better rule.” -Charles Dickens, Great Expectations Thank you,

From Uncle to

Aunt

Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture

Filmmaker Melissa Regan didn’t seek out the family with an uncle who was transitioning into an aunt.

transgender friends. She hopes the film will have a similar effect on others.

“The story found me,” she said. “[A co-worker] took me aside one day and said, ‘You’re never going to believe this. I just found out my brother is becoming a woman. I have to tell my daughters. What do I do?’ I was like, ‘Dude, I’m just a lesbian. I don’t really know about transgender stuff.’”

“When I came out as a lesbian and my parents were not so open,” she said. “In my own experience I knew my mom could really benefit from watching how this family handled this. I wanted to show her it didn’t have to be that hard.”

But soon Melissa would be kneedeep in all that “transgender stuff.” It took her a few days before she realized she should document the process of her co-worker’s three daughters—ages 6, 9 and 11 at the time—coming to terms with the transition of their Uncle Bill into Aunt Barbara. “I wasn’t even coming at it from a transgender perspective,” she admitted. “I was more worried about kids and families and talking openly about gender and sexual orientation. At that time I didn’t even have any transgender friends. I hadn’t even met any transgender people, so I was just as shy and nervous as the kids were when we met Barbara for the first time.” Since the film debuted in 2001, Melissa’s life has changed substantially and she now has plenty of

Melissa imagined her mother as the target audience when filming the 24-minute documentary, and she wanted the film to open people’s minds through a non-confrontational, lighthearted approach. She also hopes viewers will take away the sense that children are more resilient than they think. “It’s possible to talk to them about things that even makes adults uncomfortable,” she said. “We may not have all the answers but if we approach it with the attitude of love and care we can find our way through.” Since filming “No Dumb Questions” more than 10 years ago, Melissa has continued to follow the family and plans to share a sequel in 2013. In the meantime, Atlantans will have the opportunity to see the Sundance Award-winning documentary and speak with Melissa and other panelists on Tuesday, September 18, as part of an Out & Equal Atlanta event with Turner Entertainment Networks.

The Devil wears ALL of this Tony Davenport Fashion Contributor Photos by Getty Images

I CANNOT POSSIBLY EXPRESS THE LEVEL OF RESPECT I HAVE FOR TODAY’S FASHION DESIGNERS. can you imagine the challenge of successfully designing clothing while, at the same time, economies are collapsing, unemployment is rising and terrorism is a greater threat than we’ve ever known in our lifetimes? our priorities have changed and fashion has mirrored those changes. as a result, over

numerous seasons, we have watched designers reinterpret the classics that remind us of simpler times. a much more conservative aesthetic became the norm and now we all look like a Kennedy circa 1958. Unfortunately, it is being argued that this trend has left men’s fashion boring and predictable. this idea leaves me torn because I’ve always been one to embrace timeless design. I believe that clothing should be a second skin. However, I cannot ignore the fact that it has been some time since a piece has come down the runway during New york Fashion Week so inspired that I’m willing to sell my car to purchase it... until now! only this time, I want everything! the beauty of Fall ’12 is that nearly every piece can be easily incorporated into an existing wardrobe. this season’s trousers are shorter, lapels are wider, and shapes - while still fitted - are easier at ySl and Etro. Bags are oversized, gloves are studded and dress boots are laced at Gucci and Burberry. details are restrained and layering is unexpected at tom Ford and Valentino. (Wear a puffy vest or leather bomber jacket over a suit to add interest). the key piece that I never would have guessed is the denim jacket that manages to somehow look great with everything this Fall. (my current favorite is at Zara.) the newest incarnation of the corduroy suit fits close to the body and the patterned sport coat (paired with faded jeans), has become the new must have

the overall result is a season of men’s fashion that is anything but boring and predictable. If you are anything like me, it is a season that will remind you of the very reason you fell in love with fashion in the first place.

that transitions well from day to night. trench coats, leather bomber jackets and striped duffel coats have the power to ignite an addiction for outerwear, while the newest tribal patterned shirts replace the plaids of late.

I

Cho Gets Maternal

Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture

WHEN SHE HAD her daughter nearly 44 years ago, margaret cho’s mother probably never expected to be the subject of a comedy tour. margaret has been imitating her mother for years in comedy routines, so it was just a matter of time before the comedian built an entire show around the woman who gave her life. margaret’s “mother” tour kicked off in late august in New Jersey and will make a stop in atlanta September 16 at the Punchline. as a huge cho fan, I relished the opportunity to speak with the “drop dead diva” star, who has been making me laugh for years with her comedy specials “I’m the one that I Want,” “Notorious c.H.o.,” “revolution,” “assassin” and “Beautiful.” Shannon: So, tell me about the “Mother” tour. Margaret: I’m excited about it! It’s a show I’ve wanted to do for a while. It’s a lot of stuff about my mother I had done in the past. I expanded on it. That’s always been the most popular thing in my act. It’s a fun thing to revisit. I’ll be talking about mothers in general. We also look for mothers within the queer community. We look as these female icons as mothers. Shannon: What attracted you to the role of Teri Lee in “Drop Dead Diva”? Margaret: I really loved the script and I thought it was a cool story. I’ve had a lot of body issues myself and I’ve felt very uncomfortable with my weight. I really appreciated the spirit of loving yourself and the concept that all women are beautiful. Shannon: What do you think of Atlanta? Margaret: I think there are a lot of great things about Atlanta. I really enjoy living there. I probably spend more time there 60 : SEPTEMBER 6, 2012

than I do anywhere else. During the rest of the year when I’m not shooting “Drop Dead Diva” I’m on the road. The food is great. The city is politically liberal. I appreciate that part of it. Shannon: Congrats on your Emmy nomination for portraying Kim Jong Il on “30 Rock.” Margaret: Thank you. I loved doing that role. I loved doing that show. I love that I got to be in drag. I’m excited to go [to the Emmys]. My parents are going to go with me. I’m thrilled. Shannon: What are your favorite aspects of the gay culture? Margaret: I love the humor. I love the arts, the literature. My experience within the community is really fulfilling. Shannon: What’s your most meaningful tattoo? Margaret: I have a horse on my left thigh with the name underneath it, which is “Ralph.” It’s pronounced “Rayf” [after Ralph

Fiennes]. It symbolizes my dog. I wanted to have a tribute to him. I thought if he got his way in death he would be reincarnated as a horse. He thought he was bigger than he actually was. Shannon: If you could play any role in a movie remake, what would it be? Margaret: I’d like to go back and revisit Kim Jong Il. No movies have really been made of him. I’d love to be him in a big movie. Another person who would be fun to portray in a movie would be Imelda Marcos. Shannon: What do you do in your spare time? Margaret: I play music. I do a lot of reading. A lot of my time is taken up with travel. I have friends all over the world. So a big part of my life is traveling and socializing. Shannon: What are your favorite cities to visit? Margaret: I love Paris, London, New York and Atlanta. Shannon: If you were running America, what major changes would you make? Margaret: I would legalize gay marriage. I would make sure everybody had equal rights. That’s a basic important thing but they can’t manage for some reason. Shannon: If you were a superhero, what would your power be? Margaret: I’d really like to fly. I think that would make things a lot easier for me. Shannon: If you had to pick a new career, what would you choose? Margaret: I think I’d love to be a veterinarian. I love animals and taking care of them. Shannon: What makes you happy? Margaret: I love working and traveling and my friends and just having that joyful moment of being able to see the people I love. Shannon: What makes you angry? Margaret: Injustice, prejudice and inequality. Those things are very frustrating. Shannon: If you could tell off anyone in the world, who would it be and what’s your perfect one-line zinger? Margaret: I have so many people to tell off! There’s no way to even begin. Basically it would just be a “f@#k you.” There are so many worthy of that.

HOROSCOPES : 9/6 - 9/19 own the night

virgo [Aug. 23 to Sept. 22] A new job, assignment, or talent may bring you public attention. Be sure to utilize diplomacy in your interactions with others and err on the side of persuasion.

libra [SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] Partnerships, joint activities, friends, and even popularity are on the rise and contributing to your overall well being. Cherish this in spite of low-energy.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Things are going well, but beware of arguments. Put your best foot forward and don’t let your ego dictate your actions.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov. 23 to Dec. 21] “Et tu, Brute?” Take a page from Julius Caesar and watch out for your “frenemies” – you are a prime target for betrayal at this time.

Capricorn [Dec. 22 to Jan. 19] You’re facing many obstacles, constraints, and challenges right now. Manage money wisely and face challenges head on. Avoid excesses and take care of yourself.

AQUARIUS [Jan. 20 – Feb. 18] “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius!” The stars have aligned and your endeavors are more and more fruitful. Continue to work hard and capitalize on your high-morale.

PISCES [Feb. 19 – Mar. 20] Although demanding, life is good. Be sure to balance morale and your optimistic vision of the future while working at your own pace and the sky is the limit.

ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19] Focus on solving any health problems, getting in shape, improving hygiene, and some spa treatment. It may be a good time for a diet too, gurl.

Taurus [Apr. 20 – May 20] Join a gym and focus your energy to good effect. If you don’t take control you may tend towards excess and no one needs to see you spillin’ yo drink.

GemIni [May 21 – Jun. 22] Keeping calm is of particular importance during the beginning of September. Everything will be exciting and lively, but don’t allow it to become tiring and over demanding.

CANCER [Jun. 21 – Jul. 22] Everything’s coming up roses. Status, profit, and welfare are improving while energy is high. Be sure to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Don’t let self-promotion and successes affect your relationships and love life.

LEO [Jul. 23- Aug. 22] 74 : SEPTEMBER 6, 2012

Money seems to matter more than glory this month. Use your skill to improve your situation, but don’t be overindulgent. Enjoy your good spirits and take time to relax.
