A positive result with this test does not mean that you are definitely infected with HIV, but rather that additional testing should be done in a medical setting. • A negative result with this test does not mean that you are definitely not infected with HIV, particularly when exposure may have been within the previous 3 months. • If your test is negative and you engage in activities that put you at risk for HIV on a regular basis, you should test regularly. • This product should not be used to make decisions on behavior that may put you at increased risk for HIV. •

Fenuxe made a New Year’s resolution to get bigger and better in 2013 and we’re all excited for the new changes! You can call me a ‘size queen,’ but I think bigger is definitely better. Our new size format is the first of many changes we’re making in 2013 to make Fenuxe Magazine a publication that reflects everything that makes Atlanta’s LGBT community home. Speaking of bigger and better, I want to extend a big thanks to everyone who came out to the Ice Party last Saturday! I especially want to thank all of our sponsors: Ketel One Vodka, Nalley BMW, Piedmont Bark, Meyers Carpet, Nationwide Insurance, Opulence, State Farm Insurance, Pride Medical, Burkhart’s, Home Depot, Urban Body Fitness, and Palmer House Properties. I also really want to thank the Atlanta Opera, their performance blew me away. I’m excited to see La Traviata in March! Finally I’d like to thank everyone who has asked about Little Fenuxe. So much has happened since I last wrote. For starters, Fenuxe has confirmed that Little Fenuxe was living in a puppy mill and had already had at least two litters before she was lost. (She’s not even a year old.) Her first surgery was unsuccessful, but after a new plate was used in her leg she is going to be all right. Thank you so much to all of the generous individuals who gave to her campaign. I really appreciate it. Once she is healthy and back on all four feet I will be looking for a good home for her. Fenuxe continues to grow and we hope you enjoy our new look! See you in two weeks!

Suit up, Ladies!

Femme, fabulous, and fashionforward women don't need to cover their assets to don a suit.

Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

Tina Crittenden, owner and founder of Gentlewoman Clothing, has been an avid suit wearer since she was 18. “I didn't wear men’s suits, so they were always hard to find,” she tells Fenuxe. “Men's suit were too big, so I had to find certain brands to fit my needs as much as they could. Women’s suit jackets came above the butt and I didn't like that, either.” In 2006, Crittenden had an epiphany: Why not just create her own line of suits for women? By 2010, she saw her dreams realized and launched Gentlewoman Clothing with a huge (and successful) fashion show. “I think the market for sexy women’s suits is scarce, because when society thinks ‘suit,’ they think ‘male.’ With Gentlewoman, I aim to change that mindset, and give every woman the chance to wear a pantsuit she can feel sexy in.” Concerning the name, Crittenden is quick to point out: “Gentlewoman is not a play on ‘gentleman.’ It comes from the idea that my friends and I pride ourselves on treating women with care – i.e. gentle.” With her good-natured vibes and passion to please, it’s no wonder she 14 : January 17, 2013

counts Ellen Degeneres as her idol. She confesses, though, that she doesn’t currently have any style icons – she just knows what she likes and aims to share her vision. “Gentlewoman gives every woman the opportunity to wear a suit however she feels. If she is feeling sexy, we got that. Feeling tomboy, we got that. Feeling manly, we got that. Feeling androgynous, got that too!” Crittenden has solidified a contract with a manufacturer that’s ready to start production. Gentlewoman is committed to staying updated with the latest styles and fabrics. “Bottom line: If you’re a female, we have a suit for you.”

Classic meets contemporary with familiar cuts in modern fabrics, all tailored to the female form.

Gentlewoman will launch its online made-to-measure store Jan. 15, 2013. She urges readers to visit Gentlewoman Clothing’s Facebook page for a preview of the styles Crittenden has to offer. “My vision is for every woman in the world to own a Gentlewoman suit, no matter what her lifestyle,” she says, “as long as the suit fits.” www.gentlewomanclothing.com

Others may imitate, but will never duplicate the suave and savvy nature of Gentlewoman's Tina Crittenden.

Stage fright? Just imagine everyone in their underwear … … now imagine them running down Peachtree in their underwear. Cupid’s Undie Run, a national campaign that raises money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation, is a 1.5 mile fun run on Valentine’s weekend. The run has a following in 17 major U.S. cities including Atlanta, 11 of which were just added this year. With that kind of growing popularity, there’s no telling how many more cities will be added next year.

It’s a good thing, too. The Children’s Tumor Foundation is the world’s largest non-government organization dedicated to ending neurofibromatosis (NF) through research. In layman’s terms, NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves through the body, resulting in blindness, deafness, learning disabilities, and severe chronic pain. It also affects roughly 1 in 3,000 births in the U.S., meaning the cause is a worthy one. The run will start at 2:30 P.M. on Feb. 9 at Rí Rá Irish Pub. Runners will dress in their bedroom best and sprint around Midtown before returning for the awards for best fundraisers at 3:30 P.M. and the after party (still in their skivvies). Where else can you support a great cause, make a few friends, and give Cupid a run for his money while enjoying the scantily-clad eye candy around you? After all, eye-candy won’t add to your waistline. CUPID’S UNDIE RUN WHEN: February 9th at 2:30 P.M. WHERE: Rí Rá Irish Pub on Peachtree WEB: CupidsUndieRun.com/Atlanta

Contestants Adam Horne is a 23-yearold singer/ songwriter from Atlanta, by way of rural South Carolina. Very new to the scene, he has performed with theatre troupes in a wide variety of shows from “Footloose” to “The Wizard of Oz,” and is back from a four-year hiatus. Self-taught on the piano, he has a passion for taking his personal experiences and telling a story while he tickles the ivories. He tells us, “Music and writing is a driving force in my life, it has saved me in so many ways: from hurt, from life and myself.” He also informed us, for whatever reason, that he likes long walks on the beach and fondue. Hopefully you’ll fall for his nutty, sarcastic sense of humor.

Chase Davidson was born in raised in Dallas, Georgia. He grew up in a very musical household and was inspired by his grandma who was a singer and music teacher. Chase started singing from a very young age, tapered off a bit through high school, then picked it up again after high school. He attended the Boston Conservatory where he honed his skills as an actor and singer. After Chase's sophomore year in school, he was cast in the first national tour of the Broadway smash hit "Spring Awakening" where he toured the country for two years performing in more than 40 different U.S. cities. Chase has been working as a professional singer since 2004 and intends

to continue for many years to come. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the support of an incredibly loving family. Amber Renee is a 23-yearold graduate student born and raised in Atlanta. She works as a writing tutor by day and a bar tender by night. Amber began performing when she was three years old, first as a ballerina, then in the school chorus, and later in musical theater. Now she writes her own music and sings for Portmanteau, a local indie folk band. Amber is a selfproclaimed nerd – you can most often find her with her nose in a book and a pen in her hand.

Jillian McWilliams has been performing since the age of five in church and hasn’t stopped since. She studied classically through high school and college and continued on to work for Disney before becoming a studio singer for a professional development label. Today you can see Jillian running around Atlanta doing hair by day and bartending on the weekends in Midtown. She relishes making people laugh, and LOVES spending time with her little pup Louise as well as her dear friends.

Josette is a pint-sized girl with big dreams! She started dancing at the age of nine and has been addicted to performing ever since. During the week she bartends in Gwinnett, but on the weekend you can find her around Atlanta shaking her showgirl tail feather with the Dames Aflame, Davina and the Harlots, and occasionally Blair Crimmins and the hookers. When she’s not performing she loves to eat drink and be merry with her crazy Italian family.

Contestants Wade Lowman is a 22-year-old singer and performer. Since age four, he has been in the entertainment industry and has made it his career path. He has dabbled in every genre from musical theater to pop. Wade’s Atlanta fan base started to grow two years ago when he slipped on a pair of leather boots to portray the role of Angel in Fabrefaction Theater’s rendition of "RENT". He is beyond thrilled to be a part of this amazing experience and promises to bring all of his heart, charm, and talent the stage!

Matty Barbato 25-year-old Atlanta transplant from Rochester, NY. He has always been a performer since the age of 2(when he was signed up for dancing lessons). From singing and dancing around for fun, to showcasing his talents in musicals and classical voice competitions, or even just a night out for karaoke: he does it all. Music will always be what makes his soul shine, and he is very excited to be showing you all what he can bring to the competition.

Elliott Alexzander is a 20-year-old creator and inspirational thinker. In his own words he “aspires to inspire and lives for creativity.’ Some of Elliott’s biggest inspirations are Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain and Andre Pejic. For Alexzander his voice is not just for singing but is an opportunity. It’s his chance to share with the world his unique view on gender and his inspirational process.

Contestants Sarah Peavy is excited to be a part of this incredible opportunity and performing with such a wide variety of talent! When not playing princess to kids birthday parties, serving tons of yummy alcoholic beverages, diving into a new stage character, or any other odd job that can pay the bills, this 21-year-old Kennesaw resident is a student of music theater performance at Kennesaw State University and plans to graduate in July. She hopes to pursue a professional career in music and theater, and explore the avenues of television and film as well. Though relatively new to the professional performance world, Sarah is eager and grateful for each and every opportunity that

comes her way, and she hopes that one-day (preferably in the near future) she will catch her "lucky break." Amy Dixon in is an artist in all respects. Originally from Stockbridge, GA, she went to high school in Atlanta, during which time she served as a founding member of Fabrefaction Theatre Co. In addition to songwriting, she also enjoys playing the guitar and piano. She attended The College for Performing Arts, Music Education, and is currently an Illustration major at SCAD-Atlanta.

Jennifer Zuiff or her stage name Indie Killed the Pop Star, is classically trained with a background in opera, classical music, and choir. She received her Bachelor's in Vocal Performance from GSU in 2009, and is now on a serious mission to create the most beautiful and awesome music that she can muster. When "Indie" isn't knee deep in her own album, she spends her time teaching music lessons to kids and adults, playing open mics around town, in a hot yoga class, or juicing. Â

Chari Lakey being born and raised in Los Angeles, Chari has always had big dreams. She attended Pebblebrook High School where she gained many skills and more. From black history month programs, Atlanta All Stars, to the musical "Hairspray," she is working hard towards her dreams and aspirations. She dedicates time to not only perfecting her craft, but also doing community service. Chari tries to be humble, not only when it comes to her gift, but also her everyday life. She is kind, goofy, and strong, and though she has many goals, showing the world the artist she is the most important.

On the night I revisited, I let Bruce and his talented kitchen staff (Chef Tanya, Chef Tracy, and sous chef Xavier) choose the dishes – a good move.

Eats

A sumptuous tray of cheese, crackers, and crudites hit the table in seconds flat, an artisanal spread that included infused chevre, Swiss, figs, apples, bleu cheese, pecans, and wheat crackers. In short order, a gorgeous plate of shrimp and grits was presented, with the grits fashioned into fried, artful pyramids. Expertly-cooked (gigantic!) shrimp were served with green and red peppers in a sauce similar to beurre blanc. No single part of the dish fought with its counterparts. His sanguine chefs dispersed the sauce lightly, letting the main ingredients speak for themselves, which is something I truly adore: culinary confidence.

A Cardinal Presence in Vinings:

Café Vena Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

To show how dinner used to be at home, Bruce served up a heaping plate of fried catfish with a medley of squash and red onion paired with roasted potatoes and a coleslaw that offered the sweet touch to a savory plate. “The tartar sauce is also homemade,” he informed me as I hummed through each bite. Bruce is subtle with his decor, but one can’t miss the images of red birds scattered throughout. He explains: “When my Dad died in ‘82, my Mom

There are no rainbow flags at the intimate, cozy Café Vena. There is no ostentatious display of LGBT symbolism, no pictures of gay icons, or overtones that scream “We’re here, we’re queer!” That is, until you take a deeper look. Framed poppies line the walls and a cowardly lion guards bar shelves, subtle references to the jovial owner’s favorite movie. The small stage where jazz musicians serenade diners has a cabaret feel, and thoughtful interior additions (see: real orchids in the restrooms and booths lined with plush pillows) are subtle cues that a gentleman with “the touch” might be responsible for all this. Indeed, owner Bruce Speer has poured his heart and soul into his affable eatery in Vinings. “This entire place is an homage to my family – especially the food,” he said with an audible fondness. “We use Mom’s old iron skillet, the same measuring cups, everything.” He placed menus on the table with a gentlemanly bow and let the experience begin. Though the selection offered fanciful options (angel hair shrimp pasta in a light cream sauce with bacon, basil, and mushrooms, for example; an arugula salad with grilled asparagus, 24 : January 17, 2013

artichokes, sundried tomatoes, and parmesan in a lemon olive oil vinaigrette, for another), I carefully chose Mama Vena’s Meatloaf. I figure if you’re gutsy enough to stamp the namesake onto a dish, then it best be a good one, meatloaf or not. After the first bite, I can say this with conviction: I will never make meatloaf again. I will never top Mama Vena’s version and I won’t even try. I’m not sure exactly what the kitchen does to make it as succulent and tender (and something to come back for – which I did), but my date wouldn’t leave my plate alone, stealing bites between sips of red wine. “I don’t even like meatloaf, but this is amazing,” she confessed. “It’s also pretty rare to get vegetables you can tell were never frozen.” She was right. The snap of the al dente veggies was testament. But the meatloaf! “That recipe has been preserved for years and years,” Bruce later told me. “It was written on the back of an Old Dominion bank slip and we’ve kept up with it.” (Thank the Lord!)

and I were always visited by cardinals. When my mother passed in ‘08, my three brothers, my sister, and I were at her bedside when a red bird appeared outside. ‘Momma, it’s time for you to go,’ we told her. ‘Daddy’s here.’ And she left.” If that wasn’t touching enough, he adds: “During the building of Vena, there was always a cardinal around. The builder said, ‘You’ve got a crazy cardinal around this place!’ and I said, ‘No, that’s just Daddy.’” The live music, the laughter, and great vibes (or as Bruce calls it: “sparkle”) in this charming little spot in Vinings boasts true diversity in its clientele. Young, old, gay, straight – all of us are fully aware that, just like at home, we’re eating with loved ones.

Jeremy Tarlow

The Writer

Kenya Jackson

Dr. Jeremy Tarlow has practiced emergency veterinary medicine in the greater Atlanta area since 2003. During this time, he became aware of a critical shortage in the supply of blood products necessary to treat his patients. Best Friends Blood Bank’s motto is “pets helping pets” and its blood supply comes from healthy, community pets whose owners are seeking a way to help other animals in need.

Kenya Jackson has everything you could desire in a woman and more. A writer, motivational speaker, and performance poet, her work has been called “smart, honest, candid, and evokes introspective conversation with countless ‘aha’ moments.” Her first book “empty.space: Where is My Stuff?” is a spiritual self-help memoir designed to ease tensions associated with the ever-dreaded quarter life crisis.

Pets, like people, may require blood or blood product transfusions for a number of reasons, including trauma, immunologic disease, parasites, poisonings, surgical complications, and congenital bleeding disorders. Before Best Friends Blood Bank, veterinary blood products would need to be ordered overnight from one of several national animal blood banks. The presence of Best Friends Blood Bank has allowed immediate access for local veterinarians to canine and feline blood and plasma. The availability of blood products to general practice veterinarians has allowed local vets to treat their own patients, rather than forcing owners to incur the cost associated with treatment at a large, referral hospital.

Kenya is also the administrator of a new blog, (www.silencebeseen. com) and is the driving force behind the silencebeseen Facebook community. Both spaces emphasize the importance of “creating yourself” versus “finding yourself,” and encourage readers to be who they want to be, without fear. Her ultimate goal is to marry her love for writing, spirituality, and mental health to help other quarterlifers pursue their passions.

Kevin Buckins Kevin Buckins is a cerebral guy. When asked what makes him tick, he can draw the most gorgeous, poignant analogies about life, love, and the path he took to becoming the man he is today. Though adept at dealing with patients who have eating disorders and drug/ alcohol issues, Kevin is now focusing on LGBTIQ concerns, such as couples/ relationship counseling, depression, anxiety, career issues, identity concerns, and the individual quest for meaning and fulfillment. Interestingly enough, Kevin was a Bible and Theology major during his undergrad years, but soon realized that some of the teachings were discordant with his more positive intentions. He parted ways, acknowledging, “The greater mystery actually begets greater faith.” (Beautiful!) He switched his focus to something more apropos upon graduation and, after more than 15 years working as a counselor in local universities, Kevin has opened an office of his own near Cheshire Bridge Road. RuPaul Lets It All Hang Out Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

W

Your mantra “If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love someone else?” has a real self-discovery feel to it. Are you ever hard on yourself?

hen you’re lucky enough to score an interview with one of the most famous public figures in our community, you’d best check yourself for a pulse if you don’t get a little jittery. (“What if I stumble over these questions? What if I can’t articulate what I’m trying to ask? What if I sound like a complete nerd?”) Thing is, RuPaul constantly reminds us that we should be comfortable in our own skin and, lucky for me, the audible smile in the “Hello?” coming from the other end of the line put me in good company. “Ru” is quick to laugh – and it’s a loud, infectious, genuine laugh that millions of people worldwide know well. So let’s talk Atlanta! How has living and working here help shape the RuPaul we know today? Well, Atlanta is Mecca for drag – at least when I was living there. Let me tell you: I was poor as dirt living in Midtown, back when there was affordable housing. It was great. We could go to [the now-closed nightclub] Illusions on Monday night and for $2 see the world’s greatest drag queens, and we studied them, got to understand the vernacular and what it means to be a part of that society. It created a basis for us. I think they looked at us as mocking them, though. We were punk rock, genderfuck, antiestablishment types. When you say greats, who are you referring to? Erica Adams, Lisa King, Dina Jacobs, Tiffany Middlesex, Charlie Brown, Lily White, Apple Love, and Tina Devore. How do you think Atlanta is representing on the show? We’ve had many contestants from Atlanta, but we choose the best of the auditioners from wherever they come. It’s a process, but we choose the best of the best from all over. This season coming up, we have our first girl from San Francisco. People have been going, “WHY don't you have San Fran girls on?” and I’m like, “Send me some and we’ll see!” I mean, Nicole Paige Brooks is from Atlanta … Phoenix … and season two’s winner [Tyra Sanchez] lives in Atlanta now, so Atlanta’s well-represented. You were born and raised in San Diego, but you consider Atlanta your true birth place. What happened here that makes you claim that? Honey, I had my bar mitzvah there. It’s where I became an adult. It was my coming out – not of the closet, but out of my shell. In San Diego, I was involved with my parents’ melodrama. I was, at best, a background actor in their drama. In Atlanta, I was able to be the star of my own movie. It was such a conducive place to develop my personality.

I wouldn’t say I’m hard on myself, but I’m always having a conversation with myself. There’s this … internal dialogue I keep: “What’s going on with you? How do you feel?” I’m always present, always in the moment, and focusing on the now – and am diligent about it. We can tell! So pretend you’re coming to Atlanta this weekend: What places would you want to hit up first? I’d wanna walk around Piedmont Park. It was a hub, our Central Park. I’m telling you, 1976 to 1987 was the boom time for Atlanta. It started in ‘74 when Maynard Jackson took [mayoral] office. The city, like a phoenix, reinvented itself. From ‘76 to ‘87, we had an amazing time! And then what? Well, big business took over Midtown and tore down all the clubs, got rid of affordable housing, and really just … changed the texture of the city. Piedmont Park is still there, though. But can you do that, as famous as you are? Can you just walk around? I can, sure – especially if it’s a little chilly. I put on a hat and no one knows it’s me. People are usually texting or doing their taxes or something. And it’s weird to me, that people aren’t there, even when they’re present. You’ve talked about, how after your parents’ divorce, you and your sister took on the reverse role of parenting your mother, who more or less turned her back to the world. Do you think that maternal instinct and experience kicks in with the contestants on “Drag Race?” Absolutely! But even if it wasn’t my story, it’s intrinsically part of me to be empathetic and compassionate. I place kindness at the top of my human virtues – I always have. I always try to be understanding of [the contestants’] doubts and feelings. Helping them self-realize is the role I play on the show. Even in my personal life, I ask people questions they should be asking themselves. And what about you? Is there anything you’re insecure about? That’s a good question. In my constant dialogue, I sometimes have to check myself and say: “Ru! Honey! There’s nothing to be afraid of!” Well, actually, there is one thing … and it’s the ignorance and fear in other people that can scare me sometimes. But am I insecure about the way I look? No. There comes a point where you just say “f*#k it.” I’m at that point too. You should see what I’m wearing, it’s awful. Usually is. *laughs*

Ru’s real-life crushes are the three lead actors from “Workaholics” and the late Gene Kelly.

34 : January 17, 2013

Fab-Facts

Ru’s (non-sexual) female crushes? Sharon Stone and Nicole Kidman.

Ru’s counts “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark” and “Mommy Dearest” as the two films she’s watched way too many times.

So let’s take some fan questions: Since you had contestants play it on “Untucked,” choose one drag queen from “Drag Race” you would marry, one you would screw, and one you would kill. *laughs* Well, you know … they’re all my kids so, as the Mommy, I can’t play favorites. I want all of them to know I love and respect them, so I really can’t answer that! Boo! *laughs* How did you feel about giving Team Latrila the chop? I hate it everytime I have to give the chop, but I also understand that it’s life. We’re on a competition show – someone’s gotta go, someone’s gotta win. It’s like life: You have to acknowledge night and day. But the thing is … I’ve chosen each girl to be there. I’m in love with them, sure, but someone’s gotta go. I understand and live with it. But just because the competition is over doesn’t mean they’re not being watched or sought after. No way! It’s career launching just to be on. Absolutely! Even the first girl to leave is sought after immediately. OK, now what happened to Willam? Well … *nervous laugh* ... several things happened but the big thing was that she broke the rules. We take away cell phones, computers, all outside contact and … well, Willam had a computer and outside contact. You just can’t do that. Another fan question: "Do drag queens, as a result of facing so much prejudice historically, have more 'license' to say whatever they want?" Its not just queens – it’s all of us. As people, we’re ego-driven. The ego has to separate itself from other people, because in reality, we’re all one. Ego will tell you you’re better or worse and it’s true for all people unless they actively work on overriding the ego. So yeah, there’s prejudice and nastiness wherever you go, but I think drag queens actually have less of that because they understand you can’t take life too seriously. You can’t take identity too seriously. And that’s what drag is all about. What did the young Ru want to be as an adult? I just wanted to be famous. I wasn’t sure in what capacity, but I wanted to be famous. My mother prophesized I would be, so ... So she hit the nail on the head with that one! She certainly did! Well, I do appreciate you taking the interview. It was an honor. Thank you, Berlin.

Interview with Deven Green

Deven Green

"An enviable Talent Nico Stoerner, Staff Writer

Over the holidays, I met up with my sweet friend (and comedienne extraordinaire) Deven Green to judge others’ face and fashion, and I happened to mention that we were featuring RuPaul on the cover of this issue. "Ru has been a sweet champion of mine since I started making my inscrutable videos! I am so honoured to be a special guest on this upcoming season of Drag Race!” Color me unsurprised. Those who know Deven also know that she is undeniably among the most hilarious people you could ever meet and has inadvertently developed a weight-loss program that consists of watching her voice-over parody videos or live shows: You laugh until you soil yourself. Deven is your laxative. “I want you down to your birth weight,” she demands. Nico: Deven, I bought us two, first-class tickets to Guatemala since I used to work at the Consulate General in Atlanta.

Deven: Working with Fenuxe is a logical career jump. PS: I changed our tickets to a nude beach in Puerto Vallarta! Nico: I'll bring the Deep Eddy Vodka! We arrived at the beach. I was naked, Deven was wearing a mock-neck sweater to protect her transparent skin. Many of the men noticed Deven immediately and began screaming, 'Well hello!' 'Hot Pockets!' A large crowd gathered, she pulled out her ukulele and we had a sing-a-long into the wee hours of the morning. She's just like that. Nico: Is this how your Los Angeles and Las Vegas shows are, too? Deven: Why YES but with pants on! Would

you like to attend? Look at my calendar: DevenGreen.com Nico: What would America's Best Christian – Betty Bowers say? Deven: Find out for yourself on YouTube: MrsBettyBowers. I never saw Deven sleep or eat for three days straight. She doesn't do drugs or drink — I had to know … Nico: What is your secret? Deven: I have an internal thermostat which maintains a perfect state of homeostasis. I had no clue what she was saying most of the time but her positivity was infectious. FENUXE.COM : 37

Deven: Let's find some boys and change everything about them! Nico: Ha! I don’t know about you but I’m not a plastic surgeon. Any other ideas? Deven: Why YES I keep a womb on retainer for $10/month – you never know when I might get the urge to have someone else inseminated. Nico: I feel the same way Deven. What transpired next was straight out of a phone-sex party line. Groups of curious people would migrate to Deven and she would sincerely ask, 'Are you okay?' and their floodgates would open. I watched in awe as complete strangers would reveal intimate secrets as Deven provided positivity and inspiration. Deven: Look at all the good I do. Nico: I can’t. That 11th cocktail has my head spinning too fast. Deven: Are you okay? Nico: So you grew up in Canada, you do live comedy shows, you perform a hilarious musical lounge act, you eviscerate politics / religion, you create insanely funny videos, what don't you do? Deven: What was that? I wasn't listening. I brought up her website where she and David Marvel (makeup/hair/ styling) and Reed Davis (Reed Davis Photography) have a plethora of gorgeous photos – all distinct, creative, and stunning. Nico: What were you thinking: Deven: I've never met a zipper that didn't need a good tug. Nico: Didn't you once say, 'All my pores produce diamonds?' Deven: Yes! You have seen my videos! Nico: You don't appear to be a modern girl. Deven: How astute. Let me give you some period realness. Nico: Check yourself before you wreck yourself! Periods are among the many reasons I'm gay, sister! “Red” is definitely not my color, catch my drift? Deven: I love colour photos which appear black and white. Nico: Let's hop in the whirlpool! <5 warm minutes later> All you do is create. Deven: I truly love doing whatever the hell I am doing at that moment … more so I love seeing others do what they were meant to do without any tempering. Nico: I was going to say, 'you seem so wise' but... Deven: … then you saw the bubbles in the water. Nico: Deven! Deven: What is wrong with you and your dirty little o-ring Nico! Nico: What am I going to do with you? Deven: I'll give you a list ;)

Obama Appoints

(Formerly?) Anti-Gay Secretary of Defense Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

Well, this is awkward. When Leon Panetta gave his final salute as America’s Secretary of Defense, the Obama administration had to take quick action and name his successor. In a brief press conference, the prez introduced the American public to former Republican senator and war veteran Chuck Hagel. He informed us that Hagel will now be the top dog at the Pentagon, making military

decisions and putting the right people in the right places. The warm and fuzzy introduction, however, came with a curious phrase that is never lost on politically-tuned ears. It concerned Obama’s admiration of Hagel’s “willingness to speak his mind even though it wasn’t popular … even though it defied conventional wisdom.” Wait, what? Defying what conventional wisdom? I dug around a bit and found a few gems I thought you might find interesting. In 1999, Hagel opposed repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" citing (among other things): "The U.S. armed forces aren't some social experiment!" Hang on: This is the guy who’s going to lead our military now? Someone who can’t fathom equal rights for LGBT soldiers? Someone who fought to deny them that very thing? Let’s go back a little further, though. In 1996, Hagel supported the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law defining marriage as a union of one man and one woman. He also supported the state constitutional amendment barring gays from marrying in Nevada. Then in ‘98, he railed against the nomination of James Hormel as Ambassador to Luxembourg, arguing that an "openly, aggressively gay" man should not be selected to “represent America.” Seven years later, with plenty of time to come around to the idea that gays aren’t the enemy, he reacted to a 2005 federal ruling that overturned Nebraska's ban on same-sex marriage, decrying: "I am hopeful the federal appeals court will recognize the rights of Nebraskans to determine their own laws governing marriage and reverse this decision." Yeah yeah yeah, more of that states’ right noise that (without federal interruption) would mean slavery, segregation, a ban on interracial marriage, the denial of women’s suffrage, and a slew of other obviously “conventionally unwise” institutions could still be around. (Quickly, I don’t mean that states shouldn’t have rights, but I truly enjoy watching federal gavels squash laws that certain states use to justify discrimination.) Since his appointment, Hagel has apologized to the nation for his former stance on our rights, admitting that they were “insensitive,” but Tammy Baldwin, the nation’s first openlygay Senator, ain’t having it. She wants to meet the man himself and find out whether his apology is sincere. She wants to know if he is truly over his bigotry and can accept the repeal of DADT and what that means for the military he’s now leading. (I like this woman.) The Obama administration gets a score of “not too shabby” when it comes to gay rights issues. The first president to support gay marriage, we’ve seen the repeal of DADT under his leadership, watched numerous states give the go-ahead to gay marriage, and are finally getting some considerations by The Supreme Court on whether we can count on gay marriage as a national reality. This is all gravy, baby, but if I’m honest: It does give me pause that our LGBT brethren in the armed services are being led by a frenemy of Dorothy.

event, the spotlight is on the gentleman. I wanted to highlight men who have taken the initiative to live their best life…and be everything they were meant to be, including loving their same sex partners openly and with pride.

INTERVIEW

What can we expect that evening? A true VIP experience, one that tantalizes all your senses. Everyone will to feel proud of whom they are as we celebrate them with the “WOW” factor. Tell me about the entertainment. The evening is hosted by accomplished actress, TV host, and fashion model Eva Marcille. The incredible Frenchie Davis will be performing live. There is a fantastic band and Blue Flame Resources along with Food Network and CNN Alum Chef Alexis Hernandez are presenting the gourmet cuisine. The best way to describe the evening is “expect all the bells and whistles.” I understand you and Juan are more than business partners. Can you elaborate? Yes, we are. We have been together five years and married for three. We also are looking forward to having my son with us this summer to complete our family.

Two Gentlemen; One Cause The Gentlemen’s Ball 2013, Benefitting AID Atlanta’s EVOLUTION Project Dino Thompson-Sarmiento

The second annual Gentlemen’s Ball will be an evening of grandeur, where sophistication and class come together in an unparalleled experience. The ball is a creative black-tie affair hosted by actress Eva Marcille. The evening includes a three-course dinner by Food Network and CNN alum Chef Alexis Hernandez and an unlimited flow of signature cocktails by presenting sponsor Ciroc Vodka. The star studded evening also includes a performance by Broadway star Frenchie Davis in an ambiance that is sure to captivate the most distinguished of gentlemen and sophisticated ladies. Proceeds from this year’s ball will benefit AID Atlanta’s Evolution Project, a nonprofit program committed to uplifting the lives of men. Please find out more about Evolution at evolutionatl.org. 42 : January 17, 2013

The organizers are the handsome duo Gee Smalls and Juan Session. I sat down with Gee to find out more on what is behind this impressive event. What is this event about? How did you come up with this concept? We originally designed this event to give an opportunity to those who were unable to attend their proms with their same-sex dates. This is also a tribute to celebrate the many dynamic gentlemen in our community. Furthermore, it also gives us the platform to start chipping away at the walls and stigmas within the African-American culture concerning the LGBT community. Why not call it the Gentlemen’s and Ladie's Ball? Everyone is welcome – but, at this particular

Where is your son now? He is with his mother, the product of my first marriage. We have shared custody. She was my high school sweetheart. My son is now 11 and we are excited to have him in Atlanta. What do you think the Gentlemen’s Ball impact will be within our community? I see a potential for growth and tolerance beyond that of the African-American culture but also the Latino population. Do you agree? Absolutely, we want the individual to be proud. We want the gay black man and woman to be proud. There is a need for positive ethnic role models. Our community does not traditionally welcome LGBT folks with open arms. We hope to help change that, and give hope to those who are hiding who they really are. Empower them with courage and pride, leading to fewer suicides and the infamous down low syndrome. I believe these true gentlemen have embarked on a mission of hope. Through their hard work we will witness the freedom of many still in the shadows of lies and hopelessness. Join me, Fenuxe Magazine, Ciroc Vodka, and the many supporters of this event on Saturday, January 26 at 7 p.m. at Mason Murer Gallery. Details at gentlemensballatl.com.
