Award show season is always a dizzying mix of glamour and couture cattiness ... and I’m willing to admit that I get sucked into the sparkling lights of Hollywood as well. However, lately I have been so impressed with Atlanta’s local talent that I forgot the Oscars were last weekend! A few weeks ago I had had the honor to be a guest judge for “Sing For Your Life” and I am in love with the show! I am continually blown away by the talent of our community. American Idol and The Voice can keep their singers because we have knock-out talent here in town! It has also been a pleasure to work with the other judges, the host, and most of all Barry Brandon, the event organizer. Barry knows his music and our community which has helped make this the incredibly fun event that it is. I also have to let you konw about a new show in town called “Angry Fags” written by my good friend Topher Payne and starring the fabulous Melissa Carter- it is crazy hilarious!! Trust me: You will LOVE it. It’s at 7 Stages Theatre at 8pm Thursday through Saturday. And last but not least are the talented and eligible bachelors on our website for Fenuxe’s annual Best Bachelors of Atlanta. You can vote every day till March 14. These guys and gals will be featured in the magazine and will be auctioned for a date at our Best Bachelor Auction on April 6. Every penny raised goes directly to AID Atlanta. AID Atlanta does awe-inspiring work and we want to help them raise much needed money for testing, education, and life-giving medicine.

FASHION

Tying The Knot John Hilton, Fashion Contributor

Bowties have long been viewed as the formal sibling of the necktie. Today, bowties can be worn formally, also better as a cool and contemporary style item in your everyday wardrobe. Within recent years, it seems like bowties have crept out of the shadow of the necktie and are now basking in their own glorious light. Of course, bowties have been ever present whenever the event is strictly formal, but Bowtiesof today have made the transition into other areas of fashion where they have taken on a much more playful and contemporary role. Like with the necktie, there are endless possibilities as to how you can actually wear them. In terms of famous bowtie wearers, you can choose to wear it dapper like Sinatra, comically like Donald Duck, sexy like a Playboy bunny, smooth like James Bond, or hip like André 3000. Here is a quick guide to how you can style up your look with a bowtie:

Go Classic & Contemporary Every guy should own a black bowtie for all formal occasions when a tux is the dress code. Additionally, a black bowtie can be styled with practically any shirt and just about any type of print for a more contemporary look.

Designer Duds Add a little designer flair to your look with a designer bow tie. The gray knit is both traditional and edgy and is perfectly styled with a custom-fitted denim shirt. Lanvin Cashmere Bowtie (Pre-tied), $185 on neimanmarcus.com

Top Trendy This reversible bow tie in green silk and tartan will dress up any ol’ shirt. Worn a little bigger and with a loose touch, it is perfect for those gorgeous upcoming outdoor parties. O-Tie Highland Tale Bow Tie, $95 (excludes shipping) on o-tie.co.uk

Perfectly Preppy This reversible bow tie will dot your perfectly preppy "i." Combine it with lots of colors and patterns (don’t worry, it will still stand out) or a denim shirt and tie it a little messily for a casual look. The Tie Bar Grandiose Dots Self-Tie, $15 on thetiebar.com

Fun & Edgy Show off your wild side with this spiked and studded bowtie. Wear it with an all black, gray or white shirt to let the bowtie really shine. Wellington III Mid-Stud Bowtie By Jonathan Andry, $46

Neiman Marcus Black Satin Bow Tie (Self-Tie), $55 on neimanmarcus.com

EVENT

GET YOUR CHARITY ON AT

DRAGAVANZA WITH DRAG QUEENS, BIRTHDAYS, & BRUNCH Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

for the evening. We raised more than $6,500 that evening. So once again this year I have decided to "turn 40" and raise some money for Jerusalem House. This year I am excited to have actress/drag legend Coco Peru as my emcee! The theme is DRAGAVANZA. I had the extreme honor of joining the board of directors for Jerusalem House this past July. How much money have you raised so far? More than $14,000 in two years.

Coco Peru

What’s Dragavanza all about and how long have you been a part of Jerusalem House? I moved to Atlanta from Panama City Beach, Fla. in 2002. I loved going to the Armorettes shows and always got this awesome feeling watching the community give to and support them and their cause. I always gave donations but wanted to do more. I never seemed to have the time to do more. I wanted to give something back to the community, so I decided to host a party for my 40th birthday in 2011. I invited about 50 friends. I requested no gifts or cards, just that they give a donation to Jerusalem House. I got this idea from Mary Edith Pitts’ annual Birthday Fundraiser for Jerusalem House. I contacted her and one thing lead to another and before I knew it, the party had grown to about 200 people. The first event was held at Jungle Night Club. The format was a drag show, silent auction, and hunk auction. We raised more than $7,500 that evening. I had so much fun turning 40 that I decided to do it again in March of 2012. For that event I used the same format as the previous year, only added a theme, “One Sordid Night,” based on the the movie “Sordid Lives” by Del Shores. I brought in actress Ann Walker (LaVonda Dupree) from the movie and Logo TV series to be my emcee 14 : February 28, 2013

What are some of the direct benefits you've seen the money go to? The money raised from the two previous events as well as the money from the upcoming DRAGAVANZA events help provide housing for low income and homeless individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. I have had the opportunity to meet with several of the residents, both adults and children. Is this a labor of love that you fund on your own? Yes! I am so fortunate to have the best friends and family in the world and an incredible loving partner who puts up with my insanity organizing these events. I also hope that this helps raise awareness about Jerusalem House. Jerusalem House is not an LGBT organization — HIV/AIDS touches everyone. Until a cure can be found, Jerusalem House will continue to help provide housing for those in need. Housing is health care. Housing results in improved health outcomes with the majority of people living with HIV/AIDS. Who are some other sponsors involved? Apart from Fenuxe, other media sponsors to help get the word out are David Atlanta and Project Q. Brushstrokes has generously been selling tickets for the events. Sponsors include Jungle Night Club, Las Margaritas, and Caramba Cafe. Donations for silent auction have come from Roxx Tavern, Ansley Tanning, Atlanta Braves, Apres Diem, Agave Restaurant, World of Coke, First Hand Experience Massage, Urban Body, and more!

So your 40th is coming up! That's a milestone. How long have you been a part of Atlanta's LGBT scene? It will be my "third" 40th! Turning 40 has become lucrative for Jerusalem House. What can people expect at the event? There are actually TWO exciting events: Saturday, March 2 is Dragavanza at Jungle. Actress/drag legend CoCo Peru will be the emcee. Several of Atlanta's most talented entertainers have donated their time and tips for this event. Monica Mitchells, Erica Lee, Mary Edith Pitts, Amber Divine, The East Point Possums, Al'Meria RichMan, Berlinda Wall, and my alter ego Regina Cartier will be working it to make some money for Jerusalem House. There is a silent auction featuring a signed baseball from the Atlanta Braves, Craig Kimbrel, 60 minute massages from First Hand Experience Massage, gift certificates to restaurants such as Apres Diem, Agave, The Varsity, Roxx, and more! On Sunday, March 3 Brunch with CoCo is at Las Margaritas at 1 p.m. Finish off the weekend with a fun filled brunch with Miss CoCo Peru! All you can eat brunch buffet, unlimited mimosas, live DJ, and more! Tickets $35. You've got some pretty seasoned performers! Have the more established drag queens been involved with Dragavanza since its inception? Mary Edith Pitts and Monica Mitchells have been involved with all three fundraisers. Erica Lee joined us last year. Richy Pugh

BroaDWay cares CONTRIBUTES TO GEORGIA AND BENEFITS THOSE LIVING WITH AIDS NATIONWIDE Kat Tippins, Managing Editor 18 : February 28, 2013

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/ EFA) is a New York-based nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization that benefits AIDS charities all over the nation. BC/EFA first contributed to Atlantabased AIDS charities in 1992 when it awarded a grant to Open Hand.

BC/EFA raises money in a variety of ways, primarily through support and partnership with the Broadway community. “Whether it’s here in New York City with folks on Broadway, with the national tours all around the country or with other theatres throughout the regions, we are extraordinarily fortunate to have the support of so many theatre

“in 2012, BroaDWay cares contriButeD a total of $70,000 to orGanizations in atlanta anD $100,000 throuGhout the state of GeorGia,” “In 2012, Broadway Cares contributed a total of $70,000 to organizations in Atlanta and $100,000 throughout the state of Georgia,” said Director of Communications & Development Danny Whitman. “We’re thrilled by how generous the Atlanta audiences have been, and grateful for the opportunity to give back into the local community to support so many affected by HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses.” So far this year, the organization has completed the first of three grant rounds. “The first grant round focuses on food services: meal delivery programs, congregate meal programs and food pantries. In that grant round, Open Hand received a $35,000 grant,” Whitman said. “The other organizations receive support during one of our other two grant rounds, which will take place in April and June. We are doing everything we can to continue to support the organizations funded in past years.” Most of the AIDS organizations funded by BC/EFA are service providers: food delivery and meals programs, medical and health care, as well as other forms of support services, and according to Whitman, the organization also supports “extraordinary, cuttingedge research organizations like amfAR (Foundation for AIDS Research) and IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative).”

professionals who make our fundraising and grant-making possible,” Whitman said. “Additionally, we raise money through large, exciting Broadway-sized events, from the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction in September to Gypsy of the Year and the Easter Bonnet Competition in December and April, respectively. There are a half dozen more, including Broadway Backwards in March, Broadway Bares in June, and Fire Island Dance Festival in July.” Whitman said the easiest way for Atlantans to contribute to BC/EFA is to drop money in the bucket during fall and spring audience appeals: “When you go to see a touring Broadway show and they make a pitch from the stage about Broadway Cares, give generously. Your 10 or 20 dollar bill will help provide food to someone homebound

or pay for lifesaving medications. It may provide transportation to and from a doctor or offer someone a safe place to sleep at night.” Atlantans can also visit BC/EFA’s website to discover other ways of getting involved. Besides Open Hand, other Atlanta AIDS organizations that have been funded through BC/EFA include Sister Lore, P.A.L.S., Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition, Inc., National AIDS Education and Services for Minorities, and Jerusalem House, Inc. BC/EFA also benefits charities in other parts of Georgia, such as AIDS Athens, Inc.; Positive Response, Inc. in Carrollton; AIDS Alliance of Northwest Georgia, Inc. in Cartersville; Columbus Wellness Center Outreach and Prevention Project; James House in Marietta; AIDS Resource Council, Inc. in Rome; and My Brothaz H.O.M.E. in Savannah. Ours is not the only state BC/EFA serves: “In addition to those organizations throughout Georgia, there are more than 450 other AIDS and family service providers around the country, from the big cities like Los Angeles, Detroit, New York City, and Atlanta, to rural areas throughout the South and Midwest,” said Whitman. To find out more about how to become a part of BC/EFA, visit broadwaycares.org to create a personal fundraising page, throw a party for Broadway Cares, or join their annual major donor program, The Angels Circle.

Exceptional Tex-Mex meets the Perfect Margarita at

Mi

Cocina

I have been to many a place for a cocktail and have rarely found an establishment willing to call an item “perfect” on the menu, but the “Perfect Margarita” on Mi Cocina’s beverage list lives up to its name — it’s, well, perfect. There are other margarita options, but I recommend you don’t mess with perfection. The chips and salsa brought to every table are fresh and not too salty and you don’t even have to share the salsa bowl. Every guest is given his or her own bowl that has just the right amount of heat. I highly recommend getting some of the Chile con Queso. It’s worth a little guilt the next day. I could go on about their appetizers, but I suggest you save room for the entrées. They are well worth it. Mambo Taxi

Steven Cayton

Rico Salad Beef

Ceviche

Most of the entrées are priced at $15 or less, and my favorite thus far is definitely the Cocina Changa — aka chimichanga. This is not your usual chimichanga, this is pure indulgence on a plate, and a lot of it. I’ll bet you won't be able to finish it all, even if you try. Trust me: It’s worth that overly full misery. If you are looking for something slightly less filling but just as delicious, try the Tacos Habana or the Ernie’s Chicken. They also have all the normal TexMex fare and the ones I’ve tried — are all good. (Confession: I may be going to this place too often.) They also have some Tex-Mex brunch/ breakfast options that are available all the time. Mi Cocina is one of my favorite Atlanta dining establishments. The food quality and prices are great and the drinks, though a bit pricier, are worth it. The one thing that keeps it from being perfect is that the waitstaff is sometimes hit or miss. Overall, if you are looking for a great place to get dinner and drinks with some friends, head over to Mi Cocina. My grade for the excellent new Midtown addition: a solid A-.

Mi

Cocina brings the best of typical Tex-Mex fare and spices it up a notch with stellar cooking and a beautiful atmosphere. Prepare to be greeted by the friendly staff, soaring ceilings, and panoramic windows that surround the space. Check out the tables downstairs, as they are easier to access and the upstairs tables do not allow for people watching.

Gay atlanta's TOP DOCTORS OF 2013

Dr. DaviD Morris

Dr. David Morris serves as the medical director of Pride Medical, where he is an attending physician. “For 13 years, I have served the Atlanta gay community through Pride Medical, along with my excellent staff. I provide both primary care and HIV+ specialty care. Our office is proud to serve the GBLT community. We have a full service practice that includes primary care, HIV care, STD screening and treatment, psychotherapy, full service pharmacy, IV infusion suite, and free HIV testing and counseling,” said Dr. Morris. He recommends that patients have a frank and honest dialogue with their doctors about their sexuality: “It is very important for patients to be open about their sexual orientation with their health care providers. This level of clarity and openness can help the physician get a better insight to the patient and his/her overall health. Issues such as mental health, depression, anxiety, fear, societal pressures, and self-worth affect general health. Sexual practices (safe vs. unsafe), fertility, sexual identity, and overall well-being are important issues to discuss openly with your medical providers. The bottom line is that your medical providers can best help you when they know the full you — all cards on the table.” Outside of his medical profession, Dr. Morris is passionate about photography: “I enjoy studying light and I enjoy seeing through new eyes. I have taken over 20 photography classes. I enjoy taking travel photos: the wild horses in Vieques, the Vienna opera house, Gaudí architecture in Barcelona, children playing in Brooklyn, the Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok, sunset in Charleston Bay, sailing the coast of Maine, New York City during the holidays, Seattle's Pike Place Market and music fest, friends and families, weddings and birthdays, life celebrations, and photos of our three dachshunds.”

Dr. t. DouGlas Gurley

Dr. T. Douglas Gurley is an internal medicine physician and HIV specialist. “We treat the whole GLBT community in our practice, and the standard of care is truly different for our community. I realized this early in my profession and developed my practice to service it,” Dr. Gurley said. “Locking yourself in the medical closet is dangerous to your health. If your doctor doesn't know you're gay, he is not going to ask you the right questions, screen for conditions you are at risk for, and in some cases, not provide the right treatment. If your doctor does not know you are gay, he might not recommend, as we do, that you get vaccinated against HPV, the virus that causes anal cancer. Also, an anal pap smear is critical in diagnosing anal cancer and precancer. I suspect most traditional straight practices are either ignorant to this, in denial, or too afraid to speak about it.” When he’s not treating patients, Dr. Gurley enjoys the culinary arts as a decompressing and therapeutic hobby: “I always stress the importance of balancing the stress of a very busy professional life with a hobby. Hobbies that are cerebral and also incorporate your hands are especially therapeutic. This is because the hands take up more real estate of the brain than any other part of your body. My passion and hobby is cooking and cuisine. I began developing a passion for it while cooking Southern cuisine with my grandmothers in Alabama. Now my repertoire is more refined. Lucky for me, my partner is French, so I have been exposed to exquisite French cuisine and technique through our frequent travels to France. I enjoy the whole process of cooking, from developing a complex menu, executing it, and sharing it around my table with family and friends.”

Congratulations to Dr. Morris and Dr. Gurley for receiving the highest number of nominations! 24 : February 28, 2013

Gay atlanta's TOP DOCTORS OF 2013 Dr. reena Gupta

Dr Reena Gupta is an optometrist at Ansley Eye Care who has several years’ experience comanaging LASIK surgery. “Our practice serves the gay community by making each and every person who walks through our doors feel comfortable and welcome. Located in Ansley Mall, we love the diversity of our community,” said Dr. Gupta. “It's very important that patients are open about their sexual orientation during the exam because it allows me to tailor the treatment plan based on lifestyle

needs and wants.” Besides optometry, Dr. Gupta is passionate about design. She uses this passion in her office by selecting all the frames they carry, creating a unique selection. In 2005, Dr. Gupta volunteered on a relief mission in India, where she helped tsunami survivors get their sight back.

Dr. Nedra Dodds is a former model who founded Opulence Aesthetic Medicine and serves as its medical director. “We are an aesthetic practice that does everything from skincare to cosmetic surgery,” Dr. Dodds said. “The importance of our role in the gay community is to offer medical procedures, administered by medical professionals who are concerned about the overall outcome, and your treatment as a person with respect — and no judgement — as all people are entitled to.” Dr. Dodds is passionate about the performing arts. She is an annual ticket holder of the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Ballet,

Cobb Civic Center, and multiple performances at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Dr. Dodds is wellknown for seeing plays in their element on Broadway in New York, as well as attending Fashion Week.

Dr. John Ouderkirk's practice, Piedmont Avenue Health and Wellness, treats patients in the fields of internal medicine (general adult medicine) and the specialty care of infectious diseases, including but not limited to HIV,

Dr. Manuel Patino has practiced family medicine in the Atlanta area since 1995, primarily serving the health care needs of the LGBT community. He became interested in the treatment of HIV/AIDS when, as a resident in Birmingham, Ala., he was the only physician at the hospital willing to care for HIV positive patients. Dr. Patino has served on the Board of Directors of AIDS Research Consortium of Atlanta and has authored numerous papers and participated in several major studies on the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

concern of HPV (and its associated cancers). “It is important for patients to be open about their sexual orientation with their doctor so that their care may be complete with all risk factors fully addressed in a non-judgmental manner. Patients may have additional risk factors not obvious to a non-informed physician,” Dr. Ouderkirk said. Outside of medicine, Dr. Ouderkirk’s interests include traveling, playing softball and other outdoor sports, white-water rafting, camping, hiking, and the occasional thrill of ziplining or simply spending time with his three dogs.

Gay atlanta's TOP DOCTORS OF 2013 Dr. Michael pruDent

Dr. Michael Prudent is a psychiatrist. “It's incredibly important that a GLBTQ patient be comfortable coming out to their health care provider, whether a family physician, OB/Gyn, surgeon, psychiatrist, or therapist,” Dr. Prudent said. “While no health care professional can know everything about any particular patient's life, it's imperative that there be an honest flow of information between the patient and doctor.” Dr. Prudent is passionate about his church, St. Mark United Methodist, where he has been a member since 1996. “I am so thrilled to have access to a faith

Dr. annette BernarD

community that accepts me for who I am, honors and loves our family and provides so much to the Atlanta community,” Dr. Prudent said. He is also a fan of beauty pageants: “They're a kitschy combination of competition, fashion, and glamour. The Miss America pageant is like a sporting event for me, and I love the statistics.”

Dr. Annette Bernard has a practice in the Old Fourth Ward that has been present in Atlanta for more than 20 years. “We have a diverse staff that helps us serve our diverse patients. We see a broad range of internal medicine patients, and care for anyone over the age of 18. Internal medicine is aptly described as ‘medicine for adults’ and includes common problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and gastrointestinal issues,” Dr. Bernard said. “In addition, we have special expertise in caring for HIV patients. Being able to care for patients with HIV, and treat all their medical issues, enhances their care. Our patients include many lesbian and transgender

individuals, and we enjoy seeing GLBT and their partners. It is critical that patients feel comfortable discussing all aspects of their lives with us, so that we can care for them in the best way possible, and understand their stresses as well as their support systems.” When Dr. Bernard is outside of the medical office, she enjoys her passion for bicycling.

Gay atlanta's TOP DOCTORS OF 2013

Dr. patrick coleMan

Dr. Patrick Coleman has practiced with Piedmont Healthcare for 19 years with special interests in HIV, diabetes, and preventive care. “The gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered patient is

just like any other patient — one who wants good care and understanding from their providers,” said Dr. Coleman. “As a member of the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, I understand there are specific health concerns for this community and why it is so important patients feel comfortable enough with their doctor to be open about their sexual orientation. HIV is not the only issue that our community faces and by partnering with your doctor, you can work collectively to take control of your health.” In his spare time, Dr. Coleman enjoys running and hiking with his partner of nine years and his two dogs: Ritzie, a purebred lab, and Rosie, a purebred mutt.

Dr. Joel rosenstock

Dr. Joel Rosenstock began his career in Atlanta in the late ‘80s caring for patients infected and affected by HIV. “I have seen the care of those patients infected with the disease advance faster and further than any other disease

in my career. I have grown and matured as a physician, first caring for those when we had limited resources and now helping people lead long and productive lives. Both sides of this story have been rewarding to me and I admire those in the gay community who have struggled with the illness and loved ones who have helped me help them,” Dr. Rosenstock said. “I want my patients to have a free and open relationship concerning everything that is going on in their lives, not just what medicines they are on and if they are taking them.” Dr. Rosenstock is passionate about golfing, and he’s proud of his two sons, an ecologist and a landscape architect, who he raised as a single parent. He is also a doting grandfather.

Here, the word “pretty” is meant to be interchangeable as both an adverb and as an adjective. As an adjective, it’s meant to connote that the subject is pleasing to the eye. As an adverb, it’s meant to signify fairness or moderateness — in other words, being in balance. Pretty Masculine is the celebration of the human form through the deconstruction of gender identity. The overarching effort is to divert the focus of societal definitions of masculinity and femininity and focusing on our collective individuality. Pretty Masculine is tied to various charities. Which charity/charities benefit and does the cause have a direct relation to your life? PM supports The Gay Men’s Health Crisis, The Ali Forney Center (a New York shelter for homeless LGBT youth), Green Chimneys (an outreach program for children with emotional, behavioral, social, and learning challenges) and Bullies & Buddies (a pit bull and chihuahua pet rescue center). As a bullied gay youth, who also happens to be an animal lover, all these organizations speak to my sense of civic-mindedness and social responsibility.

Mike Ruiz is

“Pretty Masculine.” Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

Photographer/philanthropist Mike Ruiz is good people. His newest work, Pretty Masculine, is a beautiful photobook that aims to capture the masculine element in less-than-conventional ways. To give his fans a chance to immerse themselves in the meticulous undertakings of fashion, makeup, photography, and composition, he’s created the Pretty Masculine app. I really dig the name Pretty Masculine. You don't normally think of the two words at the same time. What's the concept behind the book and what's the app about? This has been a true labor of love. A lot of talent has come together to make this happen. From the models to the make-up artists, to wardrobe to my staff, we all have given of our time to create this hub of creativity. The result has been to provide the end user with a new way to experience art. 32 : February 28, 2013

The app itself is the best resource to learn about the Pretty Masculine experience. Not only can you see a vast gallery of images with corresponding videos of behind the scenes, but you can also click on interviews with models and the artists who brought the images to life. This is a unique product that is rich in content. You can learn about my creative process in general and specifically witness firsthand what it takes to create the end product.

Was it always in your nature to be altruistic or did something trigger it? Early on, I learned that nothing was ever going to be handed to me. I was going to have to work hard to get what I wanted. As I reached a certain level of success, I realized how lucky I have been in living a life doing what I love, which happens to be photography. However, it wasn’t until I realized the fulfillment I could get from “paying it forward” that I really took concrete steps to help out my community. I started to get serious about philanthropy about four years ago. When is the app available and how can we get it? The app is available now on iTunes for the iPad. We are currently developing versions for the iPhone and Android devices. You can go to my website at mikeruiz.com for further information. Or, you can download the app through iTunes. What's goin' on with Oliver, your pit rescue, a what's the scoop on the pit bull community in LA? Oliver has become quite the celeb-u-pup! After my partner and I rescued and adopted him in LA and then brought him to NYC, we’ve sort of made him a voice piece for pit bulls. We want everyone to realize just how gentle and loving this breed actually is. He now has his own twitter account: @OliverRuizBerus.

You have a really interesting, exotic look. From whence does your family hail? This ol’ thang! (Laughs.) Thank you, I guess. I’m from Montreal, Canada. My mom’s side of the family is French and my dad’s side is Filipino-Spanish and Norwegian. His side also comes from a long Mormon heritage. So, there’s a bit of everything in me. Your body of work is fantastic! I'm going to give you the names of some celebs you've photographed and you give me one sentence about the experience. Nicki Minaj: Sweet and knows what she wants. Dolly Parton: Funnier than I expected. Kelly Clarkson: Very professional. Zac Efron: That shoot was very short and I honestly don't remember much about it. Christian Bale: Very mellow and courteous. Claire Danes: Very sweet. Dita Von Teese: So amazing in front of the camera! Absolutely inspiring. James Marsden: He was really cool. I worked with him quite a while ago and I still remember how cool he was. LL Cool J: He was doing press all day long so I didn't have much time to work with him but he was pleasant. Vin Diesel: I really liked working with him. Very chill. Robin Thicke: I literally had five minutes with him so I really can't say. Salma Hayek: She is amazing. I've worked her a few times and I love her energy. Michelle Rodriguez: Sweet. RuPaul: Where do I begin? It's really wonderful working with a good friend who has a similar sense of humour as I do. I just adore him. Justin Timberlake: Too long ago to remember. Ian McKellan: He was funny. I photographed him with a live parrot that kept biting his ear. He was a good sport about it. Beyoncé: So amazing. I continue to be inspired by her. Will you tell Parker Posey I have the hugest girlcrush on her? Haven’t seen her in a while, but will do (big grin). We've seen you on many shows, but you particularly stand out on “The A-List: New York.” Are you still friends with anyone in the cast and what was the experience like? Not so much. I keep in touch with Rodiney every once in awhile. Martin and I do see Ryan and his husband Desmond — we had dinner together quite recently. We still laugh at some of the shenanigans that took place on the show. But it’s a kind of distant memory, you know? Is it true that you're currently engaged? Any plans on getting married or are you holding out for something in particular? I am engaged! I proposed to Martin [Berusch] a year and a half ago and we still haven’t set a date. We’ve been so busy with different activities and events. We’re hoping that it doesn’t become the five-year engagement!

Holler Poodles!! Life is full of embarrassing moments and if you can laugh at them, you’re one step ahead of the game. I’ve told this story many times over the years to many friends and to this day, it remains my most embarrassing, disgusting yet hilarious moment in my life. Picture it, Sicily, 19 aught 2. I was a very shy young boy who needed to have two back surgeries in order to correct a hump in my spine. Suffice it to say, the lack of privacy in a semi-private room at 16 years old was less than appealing. However, as day passed, the level of of embarrassment seemed to increase. From the first indignity of having my pubic hair shaved to the last indignity, I don’t think a kid could be more embarrassed. After enduring two back surgeries 15 days apart and approaching the 28th day of my hospital stay, an old familiar feeling came to visit me. Because the anesthesia shuts down the digestive tract, I had not gone to the bathroom for the last month. I was also laid out flat on my back unable to move. I was also sharing this room with a 16 yo boy from Iran with steel pins in his toes. I could only think this story would be fraught with tragedy. After putting it off as long as I could, I finally called the nurse and tried to whisper I would need a bedpan. As if whispering it would make it less traumatic. The nurse comes happily along, pulls the curtain and places the bedpan under me and says “Well just call me when you’re finished.” I could only think of my poor roommate at this time because I knew I was getting ready to release the Cracken! Not 3 seconds after I started did I hear my Iranian friend yelling “OH MAN, THIS IS TERRIBLE!!! THIS IS TERRIBLE!!! THE SMELL, THE SMELL, OHHH NOOOOOOOOO.” I felt about two inches tall. I thought how could this get any worse? Finally, I call the nurse back. Now keep in mind she was probably in her mid fifties and had been through everything 48 : February 28, 2013

and seen everything. When she walked in the room, I could hear her say “Oh Lord!” Again, I thought my humiliation was complete. But when she walked over to collect the bedpan, she pulled the bedpan from under me and said in her sweetest voice “Honey, are you trying to make soft serve ice cream?” because there were concentric circles of poop in the bedpan. I was DONE! My embarrassment was complete!! Being able now to look back at this and laugh at myself is empowering? What are your embarrassing stories? Please email me at maryedith99@gmail.com and share them with me. Love and lashes,

Mary Edith Pitts If you have any questions, comments or feedback, please contact me at maryedith99@gmail.com

FENUXE Presents Dad of the Month: Leo Brandino After serving on Long Island, N.Y. for 30 years a police sargeant, Leo Brandino moved his family to the Atlanta area in 2003. He didn’t realize it then, but his views on fairness and equality would come close to home. A few years later, Leo found out that his daughter, who was 16 at the time, was gay. He suddenly saw that gays were treated unfairly and viewed unfavorably by many in the South. His wife found the PFLAG Atlanta chapter's website after an extensive search on the Internet, and they began attending monthly support meetings on a regular basis. Leo found support from other members at the meetings, and over time, decided that he wanted to start giving back to make sure his gay daughter had the same rights and respect as his straight children. He began marching in the Atlanta Pride Parade with the PFLAG Atlanta group shortly thereafter. It has now become an annual event for his entire family. Thanks to the love and support he found at PFLAG, Leo has become a strong advocate for his gay daughter. In December, when "The Rachel Maddow Show" featured a memorial for Jeanne Manford, the founder of PFLAG, their montage featured a photo of Leo holding a sign from the Atlanta Pride Parade that read “Proud of my Gay Daughter.” One day, Leo hopes to see his daughter legally marry in Georgia, so he can proudly walk her down the aisle.
