BETTER WITH

AGE Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

Our culture is obsessed with youth. It seems like each new pop star to hit the scene is a year younger than the previous one and all the “next big things” in Hollywood only know Mariah Carey as an “American Idol” judge. Compound that observation with the fact that sex and youth appear joined at the hip and what results is a disenfranchised demographic of single people sighing at their receding hairlines and tugging at their deepening crow’s feet, wondering if there’s any love left for the maturing generation. The answer, my wizened counterparts, is yes. Hell yes, in fact, and if you stick around, I’d be more than happy to preach the gospel on some of the many, many ways that your experience and life exposures make you far cooler (and wildly more attractive) than the rest of us. Shall we? You’re usually better with money. Let’s face it: Being broke indicates more than just meager paychecks — it indicates poor management of what one does earn. Because you see no need in trying to impress people with luxury items you can’t afford, you’ve got the means to enjoy the truly finer things in life, like travel, wine with “legs,” and pants that aren’t hemmed with staples. You take care of the things you buy. Some of us will lie through our teeth and say our homes aren’t accented with piles of clothes on the floor, dust-covered electronics, and a car in the driveway that needed an oil change 4,500 miles ago. (Don’t front.) But your house? Your garage? It’s in those places that you 14 : March 28, 2013

display your investments as what they are: investments. You don’t make the purchases a frivolous 20-something does; you only part ways with money when you’re absolutely sure something is worth it, which is why you treat it as such. You’re smarter. You’ve been there, done that, learned your lesson. Now you live life without all the sophomoric missteps and (if we’re willing to listen) you’ll show us more optimal ways to conduct business, like: “Don’t accept that credit card offer, numbnuts. Your credit is in the toilet as it is” or “When the officer comes back, tell him you don’t give your consent to search and let’s get back on the road.” We’d be so lost without you!

You’re more in control of your emotions. While there is an unmistakable beauty in youth, it can quickly vanish when the words coming out of that lovely mouth are vile and childish. You, however, don’t make mountains out of molehills when, for instance, someone gossips that your ex (with whom you had a two-week “relationship”) is seeing someone else and instead of speeding down Piedmont to catch up to the guy who cut you off for some choice words, you shrug and turn up the radio because hey — life is good, right? You’re more experienced at … that. Without going too far into detail, you’ve got a few tricks up your sleeve and don’t mind sharing the love. You’re able to bestow some sage advice and even go the extra mile for the curious (it’s a tough life). We can count on you to forgo the drunken fumbling stories that seem to comprise our love lives and divulge the good stuff.

"THERE ARE SO MANY OF US WHO DON’T THINK PEOPLE OVER 40 ARE 'OMG, ANCIENT!'”

State Farm agent Cleo Meyer pictured with partner Donna and son Connor

Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. ®

You devote your time to worthwhile causes. You’ve seen some hardship in your own life and as a result, you know that setbacks can happen to anyone. That’s exactly why you don’t mind helping a local church plate food for the needy or volunteering to walk your elderly neighbor’s dog in the evening. We’ve seen you use your time and energy on something that affects more than yourself and for that, we must applaud you. Although it hurts my feelings to hear people utter self-disparaging statements like “I never expect y’all to invite me out — I’m old” or “You probably wouldn’t want my playlist suggestions, honey — I’m old,” I can’t say that I’m surprised some people actually feel that way, given the constant barrage of ‘young is sexy.’ In truth, many of us don’t think people over 40 are “omg, ancient!” (And ultimately, who really gives a shit about the twerps who do, am I right?) In fact, some of us (like yours truly) feel privileged to be around you and wonder if you think we’re fun to be around … you know, in spite of our age.

Griddled poulet rouge – David Naugle

B. Duffy, Contributor

Spring Fare Sous chef Emily Hansford’s blue eyes sparkle on one particularly cold calm morning in early spring. She thinks of this time idealistically, a time of birth and brightness, a moment when both life force and flavors are making their grand reemergence into the world.

first buying a subscription to Bon Appétit magazine and later traveling to Spain where she fully embraced the Mediterranean mentality toward fresh food. Fortunately, Emily eventually landed in Atlanta, and found a world steeped in sunshine and at a restaurant committed to local and seasonal foods.

Fortunately for all, Emily is merely a culinary prophet foretelling what the palates of Atlantans can soon expect. From her vantage point, busy in the kitchen of Miller Union, she can see firsthand what farmers are bringing to market. Admittedly, she says she’s happy to say farewell to the earthy root vegetables of winter as she welcomes a much greener array of seasonal produce.

While Emily still draws inspiration from the Iberian Peninsula she left behind long ago, these days she focuses on Southern ingredients and lets the food do the talking in the kitchen. “I like to accentuate the flavors as basically as possible,” she says. “I want the actual ingredients to shine.”

Emily was born in Ohio and anyone from the Midwest knows how the color of the gray skies of winter are reflected in the local cuisine. She jokingly relates how her mother was fond of preparing countless casseroles, many glued together with cream of mushroom soup and some even sprinkled with potato chips to top it all off. However, it was exactly this bland upbringing that encouraged her to venture out in search of flavor, 20 : March 28, 2013

Emily says one day she’d like to have a farm-totable restaurant of her own where education and community involvement would play a big role. “I want to bring kids out to farms and have them see how things are grown and have them recognize the importance of nutrition and where food is coming from,” says Emily. For such ambitions, it would be hard to find a better mentor for all foods local than Steven Satterfield, co-owner and executive chef of Miller Union. He’s a man so committed to local farms, a chalkboard is posted daily at the restaurant prominently displaying the names of his purveyors.

Radish and feta snack – David Naugle

Fortunately for the public, the majority of Emily’s creative culinary energies goes into her job. Like many chefs, after a long day of work, Emily has many things on her mind aside from cooking. She blushes and abashedly admits she rarely gets to make a proper meal at home. “I make burritos a lot,” she interjects, then smiles, “because they are really quick.” Still, her love of food is evident in the large garden she grows yearly with Jen, her girlfriend, on her 1/3 acre home in the West End. “I start the seedlings and plant the vegetables and flowers, but she’s the one who keeps everything alive.” This time of year is exactly when thoughts of produce begin to swim in Emily’s head. “I love vegetables,” she says, “all sorts.” She’s particularly fond of the bright flavors, one power player in particular being green garlic. “It’s so versatile, you can do anything with it,” she says. Green garlic is actually young garlic, pulled from the earth before the identifying ‘cloves’ have begun to mature. It looks similar to a green onion or

Emily’s Green Garlic Salsa Verde a young leek and can easily be misidentified as such. But its character is unique. “You can use it any way you would use garlic, it’s just milder,” says Emily. “It’s fun to play with and accentuate in any recipe that you have. It’s flavorful and it adds a nice heat.” One of Emily’s favorite springtime recipes, combining the freshness of the green garlic with her love of all things Mediterranean, is a green garlic salsa verde. “It’s really bright and colorful,” says Emily, “and you can really put it on anything."

1 stalk green garlic minced 2 T mint, chopped 2 T marjoram, chopped 2 T tarragon or chervil, chopped 2 T capers, chopped 1/4 cup Italian parsley, chopped 2 anchovy fillets chopped 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil Pinch of salt

Combine and enjoy. Fabulous on fish or fowl.

hen FENUXE posed the question, “Know a guy or gal who’s still single and you can’t understand why?” … Atlanta didn’t hesitate to respond! Our inbox was flooded with some extremely enthusiastic feedback from the community singing the praises of 36 amazing and eligible men and women. Thus, our nominees list was born and the images and bios of this year’s contenders were splashed across our website for your viewing and voting pleasure. Throughout the next two weeks, we received a head-spinning amount of traffic at fenuxe.com aimed directly at the Bachelor contest. Only 10 men and women could be chosen, so the race got tighter by the day.

This year, we threw in a twist: An extra Bachelor could be granted a safe spot if he or she received the most votes at one of our Bachelor Preview events. As a result, we have 11 eligible singles up for bids. Now, the results are in! The following Bachelors (and our first ever Bachelorette!) are ready to be auctioned off to some lucky winners at Burkhart’s Pub on April 6 at 8 p.m . The highest bidder for each Bachelor will receive some pretty swanky additions to the ensuing date, but most importantly, the proceeds collected from the auction will go straight to the good folks at AID Atlanta. You can start bidding online now by going to bestbachelor.kintera.org and

clicking "Bid on a Bachelor Now!" The highest online bid for each Bachelor will be his or her starting bid at the in-person auction on April 6. If you're the highest bidder online and no one outbids you at the in-person auction, you win the Bachelor! In a committed relationship? Straight? Just a friend, coworker, or family member of a Bachelor? You can still contribute to the Bachelors' fundraising efforts by donating to AID Atlanta in a Bachelor's name instead of bidding. Just visit bestbachelor.kintera.org and click "Donate to a Bachelor." So without further ado, FENUXE presents this year’s Top 11 Bachelors of Atlanta.

(Didn’t hear about the contest? No worries! This is an annual FENUXE event, so if you find your friend single next year, hop aboard! In the meantime, head to Burkhart’s on April 6 at 8 p.m. and see if your currently single friend wouldn’t mind bidding on one of these hotties at a fun-filled event for a beautiful cause.) 24 : March 28, 2013

Ryan holds a bootcamp in Piedmont Park and has helped several people lose over 30 pounds and get healthy. Ryan does a lot of 5Ks for AID Atlanta, breast cancer, and sickle cell to name a few. I could go on forever, but I'll end by saying Ryan has never met a stranger.”

“Do you work for UPS? I could have sworn I saw you checking out my package.” (Return to sender.)

“There must be something wrong with my eyes, ‘cause I can’t take them off you.” (Would a little mace help?)

GemIni [MAY 21 – JUn. 22]

CANCER [JUn. 21 – JUl. 22]

LEO [JUl. 23 – AUg. 22]

“Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?” (You’re moonwalking around me and it’s still not working.)

Holler Poodles!! Make sure you check out the next issue of Fenuxe for my next column as I am about to embark on a new and exciting journey. Until then, I want to answer some mail. From BillyK: Not to be rude but why do drag queens use duck tape to hold their junk? I sometimes see pieces of it hanging out of their costumes. Well, humm, I guess technically it’s called a gaff and the purpose is to hold your lady bumps in so you appear smooth down there. I’m not sure who thought to use duct/duck tape originally but it seems to be widely used in the industry. Other queens use a dancer’s belt which is like a very tight thong to keep everything in. Personally, I’m hung like a tic tac so I use a postage stamp. From Thumpah: Love your column and been followin you awhile. You guys rocked Jungle a couple of weeks ago. What is Jerusalem House all about? Thanks sweetie! We all had a great time putting on that show at the Jungle and raised lots of money for Jerusalem House. Jerusalem House is Atlanta’s oldest and largest provider of permanent housing for Atlanta’s low-income and homeless individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. 91 cents of every dollar donated to JH goes directly to fund programs. With the recent sequestration, HIV/AIDS charities will be hit hard and it is more crucial now than ever to support Jerusalem House. As a board member of Jerusalem House, I encourage you to make a donation of your time, energy, talents or money at www.jerusalemhouse.org. From Elgin: Good Day! I am Elgin. I still have the column from June 14, 2012 where you chronicled your weight loss journey. I would like to invite you to my step aerobics class each Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Colony Square/24 hour fitness. Hope to see you soon. Elgin, thank you for thinking of me! As you’re probably keenly aware, weight loss is a journey and once again I strayed off the road. I recently slipped while 56 : March 28, 2013

getting in the shower and hurt my knee but I will make a promise to attend your class within the next month as it heals! I’m really looking forward to getting back to a whole health approach. I want to say thanks for sending the hot naked pictures you’ve sent of yourselves... my lady balls were very busy. Keep ‘em coming! Till next time, Holllllerrrrrr! Love and lashes!

FENUXE Presents Dad of the Month: CORY BYROM

We knew pretty early that our son wasn't what you'd call a typical boy. When he was two, his favorite activity was matching and folding clothes. If you asked him who his favorite character from any of the shows he watched was, it was always a girl. It was Minnie Mouse, Jessie from Toy Story, and Tinkerbell across the board. He loved princesses and refused to accept that a prince was the same thing, just the boy version. When he was four, he started taking karate. He seemed to have fun, but never really got into the spirit of it, and never seemed all that excited to go. But when he tried dance lessons several months later, he flourished. It was clear where his interest lied.

Early on, we tried to nudge him gently toward more boy-typical activities, but he just wasn't interested. “Are you sure you want that Cinderella gown? They have this cool knight suit,” we'd say. But no, he wanted the girl stuff. And we quickly realized that that's OK. We explained to him that some kids might give him a hard time, but that there's nothing wrong with him, and what toys you play with or what your favorite color is doesn't have anything to do with whether or not you're a good person. And he is a good person, a generous, kind, smart boy of whom any parent would be proud. We've wondered if he might be gay, though obviously it's not a topic we've broached with him. He told us once he was in love with a boy at school, and if that was his big coming out, then that's fine with us. But a month later he told us he was going to marry one particular girl in his class, so you never know. But we've taken the stance that he is who he is, and our job is to guide him, not force him into being someone he's not. He knows some boys like girls and some boys like boys, and he's been around gay couples plenty of times. We went

to the Atlanta Pride parade last year and explained what it was all about. He understands why we stopped eating at Chick-Fil-A (though he's not happy about it). In other words, he knows there's this thing called being gay, but he's never made a clear declaration about himself. Hey, there's no rush, kiddo. Take your time. He's six now, a brave kindergartner, wearing pink and twirling around the classroom. He knows he's a little different for liking “girl stuff” (he's what we'd call gender non-conforming), but for the most part he doesn't let outside pressure get to him. Around the house, he loves to dress up, wearing frilly dresses and sparkly skirts. He's obsessed with fashion, and has recently become hooked on "Project Runway" (which he watches with his mom so she can skip through the more adult-themed conversations and explain what those pesky bleeps are all about). We watch him with wonder, amazed at this little person growing up before our very eyes, confident and happy about who he is. All we want is to make sure that never changes, no matter what revelations lie over the horizon.
