It seems that when summer moves in and summer outfits get a lot smaller, the list of rules for dressing properly is cut correspondingly shorter. Life is just more uncomplicated in shorts and flip flops! But there are a few rules you should observe — especially if you want to enjoy your summertime in style. The inquiry caught me off guard and protectively, I pulled my hands back from the iPad, an unusual move for me. The keyboard is my security blanket, my bodyguard in a sense. In all my years of being the one who demands answers, Brian Dixon is the only soul ever to reverse my mic.

I took longer than I'd ever imagined I would (I’d never imagined it, actually), squinting defensively over his slim shoulders into the street beyond the rain-mottled window. The answer took its time, peeking nervously around each of my false starts, as a child might during a quieted game of hide and seek.

“When you’re constantly told [by your family] that if you say anything about what’s going on at home, you’ll be taken away, it’s a terrifying thing.” I ask him why that would be so awful.

“You do it slow, not in a slash,” he explains. “And you do it in the shower.” He dives back into lunch casually. “If you cut your thumbs, they bleed a lot. A lot. And [the blood] pulses with each heartbeat.” He says this to me as though he’s reading stereo instructions — unaffected, matter-of-fact. “I still have to talk myself out of cutting when I get stressed. I bite my nails until they bleed instead.”

But ... when the honest justiﬁcation emerged (nearly without my consent), it came in a surprisingly revelatory tone.

“As bad as it was at home, my family was all I had. That was my normal,” he says. “To think that I’d be placed somewhere where I didn’t know anyone and had no idea if life would be worse ...” he trails. “I pulled away from society, from friends.”

I asked him if the abuse tried to make itself known in subtler ways.

Then there’s the option of trying to choke yourself out with your bare hands, he learned early. If that doesn’t alleviate enough pain, you can use the cord from a vacuum cleaner.

And that’s the kind of exchange you’re going to get from a wise head on young shoulders, from a man who’s seen more pain in his 23 years than many will ever see before all is said and done. You get a man who wants to know your motive before he wants to know you … and you get a man who feels it’s important you understand why you have these motives.

“What do you mean?”

And then there are pills.

“Well,” I begin carefully. “I knew a girl who was sexually abused at an early age and, as a 4-yearold, would draw penises for her family as a way to say ‘I know what these things look like and you should probably ask me how.’”

He won’t say where he got them, but he asked forgiveness before downing what he’d hoped was a lethal amount of Vicodin and Lithium, praying to God to understand while swallowing them. Somewhere in the depths

“It’s said that children don’t form memories until they’re 5,” he told me, looking at me from the corner of his eye. “I made my first memory at 1, maybe 2 … and it was of being hit across my back with a belt.” The violence can actually be traced back six months before his first birthday but, in Brian’s moderately guarded form, he doesn’t divulge how exactly that information came to light. Having been beaten and molested by an innumerable amount of people before he was old enough for elementary school, Brian is surprisingly calm as he recounts the horrors of growing up. There were years of being held back in the sixth grade, having missed so many days of school due to being literally unable to sit down as a result of being beaten so hard about his legs and rear. There’s a recollection of sitting in the kitchen being yelled at by his stepmother. What happened that day is still hazy, but he recalls waking up on the floor, his nose gushing blood, and his eye swelling. When his father saw the damage, she denied ever touching him. “It would have been OK if she didn’t mark me where people could see,” he says. “But because it was on my face, she had to lie about it.” And it wasn’t just traumatic for Brian. “My brother saw everything. When [the violence] would start up, he would literally defecate himself.” “You didn’t say anything to anyone?” I ask. He shakes his head.

Already knowing the hell of checking in and out of foster homes that couldn’t properly manage him, he wound up on the streets — namely Cypress Street, an area notorious for male prostitutes. Brian was no exception.

He instantly understands. “I talked in my sleep. From what people tell me, I’d say things like, ‘Stop it! Stop! It hurts!’” And yet no one bothered to stop it. “I still dream about the abuse, actually. I’ll say things I would never say aloud.” It’s common for children to hide abuse. To be frank, even a good lot of adults will shy away from revealing just how bad their most intimate relationships are. Grown men and women will bear that cross to hide the shame of being a part of something so gruesome. Imagine the weight of that on the shoulders of a child. So then, how does someone so young and so removed from the comfort of compassionate ears cast out the pain? If he’s anything like Brian, he creates alter egos. He talks to himself, reaches out to God for comfort. And he cuts himself for 13 years. “I learned how to do it without too much scarring,” he tells me, rolling up his sleeves. “I did it from [ages] 7 to 20.” There are faded remnants of years-old razor blade slits making macabre processions along his forearms. I observe quickly, then retreat back to the iPad, unwilling to ogle his visible manifestation of internal furor.

of chemical comatose, though, Brian was conscious, thinking he was having an out of body experience, perhaps. “We all have a vision of what death is like. I really hoped I was dead.” “And when you came to?” “I was mad that I wasn’t.”

We can be pretty spoiled. For most of us, it’s easy to glance over the names of charitable organizations (AID Atlanta, Lost-n-Found Youth, For The Kid in All of Us, etc.) and think, “Yeah, I’ve heard of them.” But for others who don’t have the luxury of passing these names and heading straight for the latest Prada shades or Scoutmob yoga sessions, these organizations give them something a lot of us take for granted — a real life. “I turned 18 at CHRIS Kids. That’s where I became an adult, but only in the legal sense. The person you’re looking at right now is not who they got when I came in.” The foundation he refers to has been around since 1981, providing respite and healing tools for emotionally disturbed youth, placing a heavy emphasis on LGBT youth. They’re an extremely welcome presence for many who FENUXE.COM : 31

would otherwise be forced to live in foster homes that can’t properly handle their behavior, with distant relatives who are overwhelmed by the amount of patience involved, on the couches or in the beds of people whose altruism isn’t exactly benevolent, or simply on the stoops of government buildings and empty ofﬁce spaces, hands outstretched for money, cigarettes, drugs, and anything else they can get. CHRIS Kids actually gives them a bed and a shoulder to lean on when they’re ready. CHRIS stands for creativity, honor, respect, integrity, and safety. “There isn’t another CHRIS Kids out there,” he tells me. “Especially for our community, [the organization] plays a vital role. Without them, a lot of people — especially transgendered people — wouldn’t have a home.” As Brian speaks, the coordinator from the foundation who has taken us to lunch dabs at her eyes with napkins, unsettled to this day by his words. She can’t stay the entire time, which is rather fortuitous. By the end of our nearly ﬁve-hour chat, the more grisly details of his life on the street surface, the likes of which could have possibly sent her home for the day. Early in his life, Brian was thrown into a facility that’s much like prison for children. The “correctional facility” he had the misfortune of calling home came with all the trimmings of

prison: cells, inmate jumpsuits, strict lockdown procedures, and guards who didn’t mind sexual engagement with the boys. That part, he tells me frankly, was welcome. In reality, he was caged and vulnerable to the sexual proclivities of horny wardens, but in his mind, he was living out a role-playing fantasy of sorts. That’s one hell of a silver lining. There’s something about his eyes. Deep, impenetrable … at times, he avoids my gaze, but it’s not an impolite gesture; it’s almost as if he looks away from me to avoid encroaching on my privacy. There’s an almost clairvoyant nature to his focus that, on the one hand intimidates me, but on the other intrigues me. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, I almost want to know what he’s seeing and why he stops looking. He’s nearly a decade younger than I am, but those eyes display the wisdom of a survivor, surpassing that of my own. Brian was no exception. Going over the many types of clientele he came across, he expounds on the thieves, the

self-conﬂicted, the paranoid, the insecure, and strangely enough, the emotionally intimate, the latter of which came mostly from married men. Though not his John, he tells me about a mentally retarded gentleman whose penis was abnormally large, but thanks to the help of relatives, could snag a hooker for a good time. He mentions a closeted preacher, codes for people you don’t get in the car with, and the oath among the streetwalkers: “You never ever take someone’s John.” Luckily, he never contracted any STDs or got popped by undercover cops. We talk about money (“I could make $1,000 in two days.”), drugs (“The majority of the money went to drugs — anything but needles.”), and rape. Yep. Rape. Again. This would put him in a terrible full circle, a disgusting and destructive, horriﬁc and criminal circle. “There’s a way to make men think they’re having sex with you when they’re really just penetrating your thighs,” he says. I furrow my brows. “You have to use Nair and the right lube on your upper thighs, then squeeze them just right.” He managed to dupe a few individuals successfully with this Cypress Street parlor trick, but the last John he tried it on didn’t take it kindly, which is something Brian understands. The raping and beating he took as a result, however — his third rape on Cypress — was enough for him to call it quits.

He found himself in a church and finally caved. He told God that he had had enough of this life and was tired. Just tired. Mother Ruth Ann Dankins placed her hands on his small frame and said: “From this day forward, you’ll never feel the same again.” Brian’s back straightens. “I felt the all-powerful God and never used drugs again.” He is incredibly serious, the nonchalant nature of recalling his gruesome past melting from his demeanor. “That woman has loved me unconditionally. She has changed my life. She speaks to me from love, not from judgment. She told me to leave those [Cypress Street] men alone and got me the attention from God I needed.” That’s definitely, definitely a beautiful thing. Always striving to stay close to his Creator, Brian went through periods of serious self-doubt about his spiritual worth. “I wondered how God could love someone like me. I’ve been defiled by myself and others,” he says. “I had to bring God my burdens, though. It wasn’t easy. I had to learn that God never didn’t love me.” The grown-up Brian has forgiven his father. He informs me that his father has serious mental issues that could’ve stemmed from the PTSD he’s suffered after serving in Iraq during

Operation Desert Storm. Naturally, Brian still maintains a distance. “My father was sitting in my living room recently with me and my boyfriend, watching football, but do we talk regularly? No. I choose not to.” During his time of trying to heal, Brian has reached out his family about what happened to him growing up, but they insist he’s not being truthful about his childhood. He’s moved on. I ask him where he’d be if all his new life plans came true. “I’d have a degree from Liberty University and be a preacher and a nurse practitioner. I’d specialize in LGBT services, especially for the trans community. I’d also be a leader in the ﬁght against injustice. I want all people to be treated as God sees them: equal.”

At 23, Brian Dixon has lead one hell of a life (damn near literally), but he has no regrets. “All things work together for good,” he says, quoting Romans 8:28. “All of this was just part of my path.” Helping the Helpers The CHRIS Kids Premiere Party is an evening of cocktails, silent auctions, and the magic of good will. Imagine you’re living in a “round” house for more than 30 years. Your parents have passed away and now you are living in it with your children. Then one day, your neighborhood started to change. New people were tearing down the “round” homes and building “square” homes. One day you get a letter that says the neighborhood association does not like your “round” home because it does not fit their image of the neighborhood; that it does not comply with their “square” homes; that it’s bringing their property values down. They are not giving you a choice. They are simply saying you must move out in four years because you have lived there enough. You have no choice in the matter because the City has passed a legislation that says this action is legal. So without any compensation, you have four years to go earn enough money to buy a new home. You are not allowed to sell your current home because they are simply taking it away from you. It sounds unbelievable and there is no way this could happen in this country, right? Wrong. This is exactly what is happening to small, local, family-owned businesses on Cheshire Bridge Road. Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan and his supporters in the NPU-F are proposing a legislation that will do away with the "grandfather clause" which will close down numerous businesses on Cheshire Bridge Road. Although businesses, such as Auto Repairs by Patrick, have been a fixture on Cheshire Bridge Road for over 30 years, councilman Wan and NPU-F want to close them down. Patrick opened his doors in 1982, 14 years later the City and the NPU-F proposed a zoning change in 1996 from C(Commercial) to NC(Neighborhood Commercial). Businesses, such as Patrick's, were protected under the "grandfather clause" which allowed businesses

to operate under the new zoning regulations. This begs the question, what incentive is there for businesses if future zoning changes would put them out? Wan and his supporters are proposing a “Sunset Legislation” that will give the businesses operating under the “grandfather clause” to recoup their investments in four years! Initially, the proposal gave businesses two years, but was increased to four after much protest. With no help to relocate and no compensation from the City or the NPU-F, Auto Repairs by Patrick and businesses like his will be thrown out. How is Patrick’s, a small, "family-owned" and operated business supposed to recoup the 30 years of investment in 4 years? Members of the NPU-F believe this is fair. This petition is to show support to the business owners impacted by the legislation that this is NOT fair. Not only will the passing of the legislation destroy many small businesses and their owners’ livelihood on Cheshire Bridge Road, it would also set a dangerous precedent for future legislations and impede upon the rights of small businesses in the community, the City of Atlanta, and the State of Georgia. Lastly, it’s just wrong! This issue will go before the Zoning Review Board on May 9 at 6 PM. Atlanta City Hall Council Chambers, Second Floor. 55 Trinity Ave. Atlanta, Ga. 30303. Getting into the contest was a process in itself! Can you tell our readers what it took just to get your name on the list of final contestants?

How do you work around a shaky voice as a result of stage-fright ... or are you one of the blessed who don't get nervous?

Well, it took a rocking horse, an Indian headdress, and a bottle of wine! I really wanted to set myself apart from the other contestants with my video submission, so I

I honestly feel very at home on stage. I always get little butterflies before I go on, but I don't really get stagefright. I know it sounds corny, but it really is my favorite place to be. If you could cut an album with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? That's easy: Amy Winehouse. She is amazing! Hands down one of the best songwriters and singers of all time. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to her albums. I'm sad that I never got the chance to see her live before she passed. That girl had soul. Do you write your own music and if so, what's the first verse in the very first song you ever wrote? (Even if it's embarrassing, homegirl! Actually, especially if it is, lol.) I actually just wrote my first original the other day! I'm very excited to finally get to perform an original at my next show, but at the same time I could pee my pants I'm so nervous. It's extremely personal, so I hope people can connect to it like I do. The first verse goes like this:

It's important (naturally) to put your own spin on the songs you're covering, but when you perform certain artists' music, do you "channel" them at all?

Hmmmmmm ... any Lady Gaga album — that bitch is fierce! — any Amy Winehouse album, and the "Now and Then" soundtrack. That is my jam in the car!

Absolutely! The reason people cover songs in the first place is generally because the artist or the song has inspired or influenced them, so I definitely channel artists when I cover their music. My main goal when covering a song, though, is to make people think of my performance when they hear that song whether they want to or not. I really want people to remember my performances!

But it’s not over for Josette, oh no. Apart from rockin’ venues with her band Davina and the Harlots, she’ll be drowning us in soul during a performance at Pride. Given the chance — and some industry talent scouts in the audience — she could possibly be discovered as the next best thing out of Atlanta to hit the charts. Good luck to you, Ms. Pimenta!

Holler Poodles!! With summer right around the corner, I know all of you fashionistas are looking to me to set the trend for the summer... And I am here to tell you the trend is skin!! That’s right readers, skin... as in naked! Or nearly naked! Bare as you dare! Oh hell, why not be naked? It’s affordable, it’s your body and its yours to celebrate. How many people are nudists at home? I ﬁnd it’s just easier to stay naked. It’s so much cooler in the summertime. Plus, you save so much on laundry. And when the pizza guy delivers, I always answer the door as naked as the day I was born. I let him see my long pendulous breasts swaying to and fro as if to hypnotize him into submission (only if he’s cute!). I’m not sure why some people have such a problem with nudity but in my opinion, we should all give it a try at least once. I think it would help our acceptance of each other and tear down some walls. Can you imagine if world leaders or politicians had to stand in front of each other nude to debate issues? I bet things would be vastly different. I see all of these pictures of The World Naked Bike Ride and other nude events on the net and think why not? In a sense, when we are nude we are our “freest” selves. We are not obstructing our physicality with clothing. It’s as if to say accept me as I am. As I’ve gotten older (shut up bitches) I see nudity very differently from when I was younger. When I was a kid, i didn’t give it much thought one way or another. I remember going to the YMCA with my “big brother” and saw all of these naked men swimming. I immediately told my big brother I wanted to swim naked too and he let me. I remember feeling so free and happy, not in a sexual way but unencumbered. Later as a young adult, I often found locker rooms embarrassing--more because of my scars from back surgery than from my actual nudity. 68 : May 9, 2013

It was my own insecurities about my scars that triggered feelings of inadequacy. It wasn’t till about 10 years ago a friend totally changed my perception. He said he thought scars were kinda neat... that they told a story and the history of a person. I had never thought of it in those terms before. It suddenly helped me accept my scars. Suddenly, being nude in front of others wasn’t about my self inﬂicted shame of my scars--it was about being comfortable in my own skin! Love and lashes, MEP
