FENUXE 6.20.2013 Editor’s

Note

One of the things I enjoy so much about our great city is its atmosphere and people. I’ve been traveling around a lot lately (so much that I feel at “home” at the Delta baggage claim) and I’ve been able to see many of our country’s great gay hot spots. While I’ve had a lot of fun (and maybe TOO much fun), there is nothing like home. We’ve got an inspiring, thriving, and growing community here. I’m incredibly excited for our future! Now that we’re officially in the middle of Pride month, I want to take a moment to reflect on how far we have come as a community. It wasn’t too long ago that the Stonewall riots sparked a cultural shift in thinking that led us to where we are today. All of us here at Fenuxe are eagerly waiting for the Supreme Court’s decisions which will hopefully come down in our favor by the time you read this. I couldn’t have imagined (even just a few short years ago) that we would have come this far so quickly. Literally, I turned on Comcast On Demand the other day and even they are featuring LGBT-related films all this month. Everywhere I turn I see more and more people coming out, standing up, and being vocal — living with Pride. It’s quite a thrilling time to be gay. As always, I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you! Take Care,

This season the trends in men’s fashion eyewear are going timeless and classic. Gone are all signs of flashy and logo-heavy wraparound shades. No nonsense, nologo, classic frames that are retro with a contemporary twist. The lines are clean and elegant and the frames are a little bit on the bigger side. The classic wayfarer shape is a spot-on trend followed closely by the aviator type frame with the flattering dropshaped lenses. Classic finishes like tartaruga and tortoise (both fake, naturally) are still popular, but feel free to discover other options and colors to put a modern spin on your retro-style specs so your eye candy is as sweet as ever. Sure, the primary function of sunglasses is to protect your eyes against the sun. But if you are like most people, wearing shades is equally as much about the coolness of it. In fact, most people shop sunglasses based only on how they look, not how well they protect your eyes.

THREE TIPS ON HOW TO PICK YOUR SHADES

1

Protect Your Eyes – Make sure the lenses have a UV filter in them so your eyes will be protected. It is the primary property of your sunglasses!

18 : June 20, 2013

2

Match Your Face – Sunglasses should be of a fitting size and neither too small nor too large. They should adequately cover your entire eye area, so generally bigger is better than smaller.

3

Accentuate Your Features – It is always a good idea to have the sunglasses follow the arch of your eyebrows. Also, if you have a round face, go for more square frames and vice versa.

GROOMING

SLEEPING Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

You may be using a daily moisturizer or sunscreen, but have you ever considered a night cream? You may think, That’s just another cream, which will make my life a little more complicated, but there are quite a few advantages to using a night cream. You may not think there is much difference between a day and night cream, but they serve completely different purposes. A daily moisturizer should protect your skin against the sun and pollution, while a night cream will nourish and repair your skin, meaning it would make no sense to use a moisturizer with sunscreen at night or vice versa. Because the skin’s ability to absorb nutrients and moisture during the night is much better, it makes perfect sense to deeply moisturize the skin, prevent premature aging, and heal breakouts at night instead of during the day, when the skin is ‘busy’ coping with protecting itself from the environment. After a long day, the best thing you can do for your skin is wash away the dirt and grime and apply a nightly treatment that fits your skin’s needs. It only takes a few minutes, and your skin will thank you for it by looking its very best during the day.

EVENT

JOININg HEaRTS 26 Kat Tippins, Managing Editor

Joining Hearts’ annual Main Event started as a formal affair with dapper gentlemen dressed in tuxedos and elegant ladies clad in stylish gowns, but now its attendees wear hardly anything at all. At the 26th Main Event (aka Joining Hearts 26) this year, you’re more likely to see speedos and bikinis than cufflinks or a bowtie. “Over the years the event has grown and changed from a black-tie cocktail party, to an evening dance party, into the pool party it is today. Joining Hearts, like so many other events, has grown and changed to reflect the tastes of our event guests,” Heath Loupe, director of events for Joining Hearts, tells FENUXE. “We have evolved with the community response, even adding other events over the years, like the Wish List Party, Love on the Rocks, and the Change of Seasons Tea Dance. As Joining Hearts continues to evolve with the times, we continue our mission of providing housing for those men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in our Atlanta community.”

THE dETAiLs WHAT: Joining Hearts 26 WHEN: Saturday, July 20, 4-11 p.m. WHErE: Piedmont Park Aquatic Center HOW: Purchase tickets at joininghearts. org. General admission tickets are $95; VIP tickets are $175. 22 : June 20, 2013

Out of all the fundraising events Joining Hearts holds throughout the year, the pool party consistently brings in the largest amount of donations for beneficiaries Jerusalem House and AID Atlanta. “With 100 percent of all tickets sales and bar tips going directly to our annual donation to our beneficiaries, our Main Event contributes more than 50 percent of our annual donation amount,” says Loupe. “While we did increase our general admission and VIP ticket prices this year, we know that not even that difference will be able to fill the void for our beneficiaries who provide these much needed housing services. We rely on our patrons and corporate sponsors to help fill in this void and for our guests to tip our bartenders generously the day of the event.” General admission tickets include access for the full seven-hour party along with complimentary cocktails and food. Smirnoff is providing cocktails and Bridge Catering is providing the food. DJ Luis Perez and DJ Joe Gauthreaux will spin upbeat dance music. The VIP tickets include all the benefits of general admission plus premium spirits, a private air-conditioned VIP lounge, gourmet food, and some limited edition Joining Hearts 26 keepsakes. Tickets sold out last year, so visit the Joining Hearts website to get yours before they’re gone!

The venue for Joining Hearts 26, Piedmont Park Aquatic Center, is a favorite of guests who have attended Main Events in the past. “Our guests have repeatedly requested that we return to the pool as our venue space each year in our annual event survey,” Loupe says. “We have a great working relationship with the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the City of Atlanta, and the Mayor's office over our 26 year history — partners really. They have all been very good to Joining Hearts, they believe in and support our mission. They invite us back every year and commend Joining Hearts for providing a much needed service to our community and for producing an exceptionally well run event.” Throughout its 26 years, Joining Hearts has donated more than $1,589,500 to its beneficiaries. According to Loupe, Joining Hearts donated a record-breaking $250,000 to their beneficiaries last year. “We are hoping that with the support of our community and generous patrons and corporate sponsors to surpass that number this year,” he adds. “With the cost of providing housing increasing and the number of grants that our beneficiaries receive decreasing, our work in fundraising for them has never been more important.”

chutneys. The puris are surprisingly cold inside and spectacularly different. “It's the dish that Indian people are surprised to see on the menu and are happy they ordered,” Files says. “They tell me it actually tastes like what they can get at home.” The main dish was a Thali, which is a traditional dish of many facets, served with basmati rice, a soup-style daal, sabji (a sort of Indian potato salad), raita (an herb-laden yogurt that cools the tongue), and roti, as well as kachumber and papadum. Not sure what the last two are? Good! You should head down there and find out. Chef Daniel likes to switch it up, though. “Every night on the Thali, we do something different,” he notes, so what you’re reading now might now be what’s presented.

Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

THE THING I ADORE ABOUT INDIAN RESTAURANTS IS THE INTENSE AROMAS OF CARDAMOM, TURMERIC, AND CORIANDER THAT ENVELOP YOU THE MOMENT YOU OPEN THE DOOR. IT’S A DISTINCT (AND WELCOME) SMACK ACROSS YOUR SENSES THAT GEARS YOU UP FOR THE EXPERIENCE. IN GOOD FORM, CHAI PANI IS READY TO SMACK YOU ... AND YOU’RE GONNA LIKE IT. Chai Pani doesn’t just want you to experience Indian food — they want you to experience Indian street food. The casual Decatur eatery takes diners on a seated promenade through the vibrant streets of India — Royal Northern India, specifically — and in their surging miasma of beans, broths, and breads, you can almost see streetside sari-clad women stirring piquant, highly palatable delights. Michael Files, a partner in the restaurant, tells FENUXE: “There isn’t much of what I’d consider ‘fusion’ here, but the closest we come is the kale pakora.” A fantastic chaat (street snack), their take on kale is an atypical (but marvelous) way to go about the green stuff. Kale is naturally thick and with the added crisp shell of a curried chickpea batter, its crunch has no rivals. Served with a green chutney that’s herbal and sweet, I honestly asked if they bottled or sold it. (Chai Pani, are you listening? You could sell that stuff.) The chef de cuisine, Daniel Peach, is surprisingly young for his role at Chai Pani, but once you 24 : June 20, 2013

try his dishes you realize that he’s culinarily far beyond his years. The fresh-faced cuisiner spent years in India, teaching himself Hindi and delving into all facets of the culture. “With the exception of maybe one or two simple things, I make everything from scratch,” he tells FENUXE. Naturally, Chai Pani offers a mélange of curried delights, but this isn't just a place where you get curry, no sir. Their Tomato & Cheese Uttapam (like an Indian version of pizza almost, but on a crêpe) is sumptuous. With ingredients baked right into the batter, the flavors seep into the crêpe. The food is served in silver tins, as it would be in India. The spirited décor is awash in color. Photography of street scenes spackle the walls and the upbeat music is a background player, allowing diners to talk in “inside voices.” The Sev Potato Dahl Puri are crisp globes stuffed with potato, cilantro, onion, and chickpea noodles tossed with green and tamarind

A rava (dessert) comes with the Thali dishes during dinner shifts. Their Indian Semolina pudding (think Cream of Wheat) is tinged with hints of saffron, cardamom, and a secret ingredient so refreshing, it could almost be mint. There’s an old tale that comes out of India that goes something like this: When a group of Parsi immigrants were trying to board land in Maharaj territory, they were presented with a full bowl of milk and told: “Our land is like this bowl — there is no room for anything else.” One of the Parsis approached the bowl and stirred in a spoonful of sugar, shrinking the mixture and turning it into something sweet, proving that not only was there room for more, but that the union would create something even better than before. With Chai Pani’s addition in Decatur, I feel they’ve done that very thing. CHAI PANI 406 W Ponce De Leon Ave. Decatur, GA 30030 (404) 378-4030 chaipanidecatur.com

OUR

Immigration

Situation Conswella Bennett, Contributing Writer

“It was certainly a grim day. We were disappointed, but we remain steadfast. It was deeply, deeply disappointing, but it means we continue to press forward for the best bill for LGBT undocumented immigrants and their families.” - Stacey R. Long, Esq., director of Public Policy and Government Affairs with the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force.

“Honestly, [we’re] talking about around 38,000 same-sex couples. We’re talking about equality.” - Maya Rupert, policy director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “It’s a simple inequality, and it should be addressed. The time is now for such legislation that recognizes the same-sex bi-national couples because now more states recognize same sex marriage.” Gregory T. Angelo, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans.

“Not providing some relief to siblings who face extreme hardships because of their separation and not ending the discrimination against same-sex couples legally married in the United States is short-sighted and bad policy. Many amendments added during the mark-up will strengthen the bill in the areas of highskilled immigration, protections for vulnerable groups, and due process. However, other amendments, like those attempting to deny citizenship, may have been driven more by rhetoric than reality.” - The Immigration Policy.

Despite the momentum surrounding a comprehensive immigration reform bill that was supposed to include protections for same-sex binational couples, the Senate Judiciary Committee decided not to follow through with the same-sex inclusions during the markup process last month. Sadly, bill number S.744 was passed out of the committee by a 13-5 vote on May 21. Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., prepared the amendments to the bill that would allow gay Americans or U.S. residents to sponsor their partners for U.S. residency in the same manner married heterosexual Americans can. LGBT advocacy groups hoped the addition would address the issues of inequality. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case.

“We are disappointed that certain senators threatened the entire immigration reform bill simply because it affords same-sex binational couples equal immigration rights. At the same time, we thank Senator Leahy for standing up for these families.” - A press release endorsed by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), The National Center for Lesbian Rights, GLAAD, United We Dream, the Queer Undocumented Immigrant Project, Lambda Legal, Equality Federation, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.

“As we come together as a nation to tackle our broken immigration system, it is deplorable that a small number of Senators have been able to stand in the way of progress for lesbian and gay couples torn apart by discriminatory laws. Instead of working to achieve commonsense solutions, Senators Graham, Flake, McCain, and Rubio threatened to derail the entire immigration bill to appease a small but vocal group of antigay social conservatives that will do anything to stop the progress for lesbian and gay couples.” HRC President Chad Griffin.

Although this is a setback, the NGLTF is pleased that the bill does currently address issues that will particularly benefit LGBT people. According to their press release, the provisions will provide protections for undocumented youth, eliminate the one-year bar on applying for asylum, improve conditions for people held in detention facilities, limit the use of solitary confinement, and explicitly prohibit the use of this practice based solely on detainees’ sexual orientation or gender identity. 28 : June 20, 2013

S. Derek Gage Georgia has enshrined discrimination against the LGBT community in its constitution by defining marriage as between one man and one woman, and the consequences reach far beyond our dreams to have our marriages recognized. This amendment to our state constitution effectively endorses a pattern of bias against gays, lesbians, and the transgendered who come into contact with our judicial system. With this state-sanctioned inequality comes a whole host of legal dilemmas for gay and lesbian individuals and families and puts all of them at the mercy of one judge's interpretation of the amendment and the extent of its reach to critical aspects of our lives. It is essential for us to get creative as attorneys for the LGBT community and to offer practical outcomes for our clients that defy a hostile legal environment and put them on as close to an equal level with our heterosexual friends as possible. While other heroic litigators are fighting to defeat these terrible laws head-on, we attorneys who directly serve the community must, in the meantime, use our skills to create de facto equality through our advocacy and imagination. I offer the LGBT community services in estate planning, as well as criminal defense litigation. Both of these areas of practice present unique challenges to gay and lesbian individuals and families. If you pass away without a valid will in Georgia, and you're gay, the cards are stacked heavily against you. Our laws of intestacy that govern the distribution of our property, our assets, and the fate of our children if we die without having planned our estate don't recognize homosexual relationships of any kind; you might as well not even have known each other in the eyes of Georgia probate courts. Needless to say, this can have a hugely detrimental impact on our families when we pass. My firm offers comprehensive estate planning to LGBT families that will address all of these concerns and provide practical outcomes that avoid the pitfalls of Georgia's discriminatory legal framework. The criminal justice system presents its own problems to gays and lesbians who have the misfortune of being cited or arrested for criminal charges. While many Georgia judges and law enforcement officers are gay-friendly (or gay, themselves), there are countless others who are openly biased against us. We use our experience to help our gay, lesbian, and transgender clients successfully navigate what can be a system tilted against them just based upon their sexual orientation. I love to cook, and it's the closest I come to having artistic abilities. Give me a beer or a glass or wine and a Viking range and I'm in heaven. Just don't hang around to clean up after dinner — my boyfriend says I can tear a kitchen up worse than anything he's ever seen. 32 : June 20, 2013

Michael N. Miller I am concerned with the way LGBT individuals and families are treated on a daily basis. While we are at the precipice of making significant strides in how we as a community are viewed by the courts and by the legislature, there is still a bias that exists with the legal system when it comes to our community. Change is slow and until people's minds are changed and politicians follow suit, we are left to work within a context that is not geared to our specific needs and the needs of our families. I have always worked to help gay, lesbian, transgendered, and bisexual clients navigate a legal system which was designed to deny them certain basic and fundamental rights while preventing them from being stripped of their dignity and affording them fair and equitable treatment during some of the most trying periods of their life. I am passionate about equality for all people. I believe everyone should be looked at the same, regardless of sexual orientation, race, sex, national origin, religion, etc. Sadly, we all bring our biases to the table, whether as a result of our upbringing, the part of the country we were raised in, our religion, or how we have been treated by others during our lives, yet we are uniquely situated such that we have the ability to choose whether or not to cast those biases aside. I am a proponent for gay marriage. I believe it is a right; not a privilege. However, my partner of 18 years and I have no plans to run out and get married. Our families and friends have always treated us like a married couple and we function as a married couple. My partner, friends, and family are the most important and valuable things in my life. I believe that the people we surround ourselves with and the quality of our friendships in many ways define us. I have always loved cars and driving fast. My parents bought me my first sports car when I left for college and everyday after class I would get out on the country roads and put the car through its paces. I think I am one of the few people who could actually give you the technical specs on the car you are driving and what options you could get on different year models.

Always very close to both, I watched my parents not just ‘talk the talk,’ but ‘walk the walk’ by helping people who are taken advantage of by others — or simply not as blessed — as we were as a family. As my parents said many times by not just their words but by their actions, giving money to others can help change situations, which is good, but the giving of your time changes hearts — yours and theirs. My parents’ daily example inspired and excited me then, as it does today. Their influence was a huge force in my journey to become a trial attorney/ personal injury. I'm a beach/ocean fanatic and plan to have a home on the beach one day. I regularly practice in the areas of estate planning and litigation in Georgia. I enjoy serving the gay community by informing people and preventing the consequences of simply failing to do anything. Many view will and estate planning as something that is only for the wealthy. Not true. Without even a basic will, power of attorney, and health care directive, a loving gay partner of many decades could not only be excluded from receiving property from their deceased partner, but decisions regarding their partner's health care and end of life treatment preferences could be left up to others. This is especially true in

Tracie Klinke Immigrants come in all types: Fortune 500 CEOs, researchers at NASA, music students, those just looking for a better job and a better life, and people fleeing persecution because of who they are. My practice focuses on immigrant communities that have had an extraordinarily difficult time in the United States. In the immigration world, LGBT issues are everywhere. If a foreign worker wants to bring his husband to the U.S., can he? Probably not. But can a person file for asylum because of sexual orientation persecution in his home country? Absolutely. Can a U.S. citizen file paperwork to keep his transgendered spouse in the U.S.? It depends. If someone is a victim of a violent hate crime, can he apply for "victim of crime" visa? Probably.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to rule on DOMA and Proposition 8. While the Prop 8 decision will likely only impact California, the ruling on DOMA will likely have consequences throughout the country. I hope that the Supreme Court will allow the federal government to recognize lawfully performed same-sex marriages. If we don't get this change this year, I remain hopeful that our immigration policies will soon embrace families in all their various forms. I love going to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and any of our area's great Shakespeare companies (Shakespeare Tavern, Georgia Shakespeare). I like the idea of enjoying music and theater that has entertained people for hundreds of years — it's like a living connection with history.

Georgia, as its laws don't have formal recognition of gay partnerships. Also, I aggressively represent and defend the rights of surviving partners in probate courts in Georgia after their loved ones have departed. I am rather passionate about music, as I am a season ticket holder to the Atlanta Opera, I collect vinyl records regularly (Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald are some of my favorites), and I frequently sing baritone and play trumpet with my church in Midtown. I also enjoy spending my free time with my family, especially my two nephews, who are 8 and 2 years old.

My legal practice is split into two areas. First, I offer domestic partnership packages. This includes a will, a living will, and financial and health care powers of attorney. These are so important for everybody to have, but especially for members of the LGBT community until marriage is recognized in this state and country. It is important to have these legal documents in place to ensure that your decisions will be carried out — not only concerning who gets your property, but who can visit you in the hospital and make medical and financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapable of doing so. Secondly, I am a bankruptcy attorney. Many people are going through financial hardship and I am there to assist them through this difficult time.

Kenneth Franklin I am an entertainment attorney with The Law Offices of Sandra L. Brown, P.C. (SLBPC) where I have practiced since January 2010. SLBPC is a boutique law firm with 18 years of experience in the entertainment industry. The firm represents a diverse clientele of multi-platinum talent and awardwinning celebrities in all areas of entertainment, including music, publishing, television, motion picture, and new media. As an attorney at the firm, I have negotiated an array of deals for recording artists, producers, songwriters, managers, on-air talent, and independent record labels and publishers.

LGBT community, I look forward to continuing my work in the area and working with more LGBT clients in the coming months and years.

Personally, I have represented LGBT individuals and business, including the reality TV and adult entertainment spaces, and have been consulting with various LGBT musical artists, musical performers and television producers in Atlanta. Given the immense artistic talent and entertainment activity in Atlanta’s

I am deeply passionate about music, and a big fan of Atlanta’s vibrant live music scene. I am particularly excited about the recent reemergence of Music Midtown and other music festivals in Atlanta. I am also very passionate about giving a wonderful, happy life to my rescue puppy, Paxton, who I recently adopted.

There is no question that all persons, regardless of their ethnic, racial, or religious background, disability, or gender status or orientation (including LGBT status), deserve excellent legal representation. Here in Georgia, we're collectively making great progress in eroding bigotry and misconceptions about LGBT people. I am proud to have worked with LGBT clients and will continue to do so.

Being a gay attorney and an active member of the LGBT community, I am able to assist my clients with the understanding and knowledge of many situations unique only to our community. One matter in which I am passionate about is the young people of this country, especially those struggling with their sexuality. It is so sad when a young person commits suicide due to the bullying and feeling they are all alone. It is terrible when parents abandon their children when they come out. There are several great organizations that are helping in these areas, but we need more and we all need to do more. I was a big supporter of CHRIS Kids, and I also support The Trevor Project.

Since I first started practicing law in Atlanta in 1983, I have taken extreme pride in representing people in the LGBT community. For decades, I have handled gay and lesbian financial and domestic legal matters, both litigation and transactional. I have lobbied on gay and lesbian issues in the Georgia General Assembly. I have served on the boards of several community organizations and received awards for my work on gay marriage equality and civil rights from the ACLU of Georgia and the Stonewall Bar Association. I am a trained mediator, with particular sensitivity to and experience with LGBT issues. I and my partner of 21 years, Lee Frush, a financial planner, now work together to provide our mutual clients with collaborative estate planning and wealth management services, in addition to the other legal and financial services which our office provides.

I’ve participated in Pride for the last four years. It’s given me the opportunity to speak with folks about what the LGBT community needs and how I can offer help and services within the family law arena. I offer a wide array of services to our LGBT clients, including traditional family law matters (divorce, custody, child support, etc.) as well as non-traditional family law matters (second-parent adoptions, partnership agreements, estate planning, etc.).

When I started, there were only a very few of us openly practicing as LGBT lawyers in Atlanta. We faced many hurdles as a consequence. But, I am dedicated to the idea that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people are entitled to the same quality of legal representation as the rest of our community. Especially for those of us who are openly visible as LGBT professionals, we need to hold ourselves to an even higher standard of competence and professionalism. Outside of the office and our community work, my partner Lee and I love to ski (we finally got married on the Peak to Peak Gondola at Whistler-Blackcomb Mountain during Gay Ski Week 2009), we are both avid scuba divers (we’ve logged about 75 dives together so far, including several near 200 feet), and we spend many of our weekends working on our cabin in the Cherokee National Forest in East Tennessee.

From my experience I’ve learned many people in the LGBT community aren’t aware of what they can do to protect and preserve their family units. I’ve traveled to Rome, Ga. and metro areas to give presentations to help with awareness. It’s so important that the members of our community do all they can to ensure they are protected. So many people are turned away from attorneys’ offices (or feel they will be) simply because they are gay or transgendered. It is so important to have a safe place all LGBT persons can go to have their legal needs met. I strive to ensure my office is just that place. Right now my passion is my daughter! She’s three months old and the absolute light of my life. My partner and I want to make sure she has every opportunity in life, regardless of having two mommies. Her smile lights up our world!

National HIV Testing Day Take the Test, Take Control By Terry Hackworth, MSN, APRN

When was the last time you were tested for HIV? Knowing your status is the first step into taking control of your own health. National HIV Testing Day is June 27. This annual campaign encourages people of all ages and risk groups to be tested for HIV.

Who should be tested? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says testing and screening should be included with routine medical care in all health care settings. The current recommendation is for all persons to be screened once for HIV and any person deemed

high risk for HIV infection should be screened at least annually. Based on that level of risk, more frequent testing should be considered in certain groups. According to the Department of Public Health, Georgia is ranked sixth highest in the U.S. for AIDS cases through December 2009. Statistics in Georgia reveal that in 2010, approximately 40,328 people were living with HIV/AIDS. Of that number, Fulton and Dekalb had the highest HIV prevalence in the state. The rate of new infections among men who have sex with men has increased from 26,700 in 2008 to 29,800 in 2010. African Americans are disproportionately affected, as compared to Caucasians. It is estimated that HIV infections within the African-American population are 7.9 times higher, as compared to Caucasians. The highest rate of new infections is among African-American females.

How are you tested for HIV? There are several technologies available to your care provider to test you for the presence of HIV. Ask which test is available to you: RAPID HIV TESTS: These tests provide you with results in approximately 20 minutes. The rapid HIV test detects the presence of HIV antibodies for both HIV 1 and HIV 2. Rapid HIV tests can be performed with the use of whole blood (usually a “finger stick) or oral fluids. Recently, ORAQUICK has been approved for home testing with the use of saliva.

used for data collection only to determine the prevalence of HIV in the state. When this information is shared with the CDC for national health trends, all identifying information is removed.

THE WESTERN BLOT is considered to be a supplemental means of testing to confirm infection by HIV. Western Blot also requires a whole blood sample that is sent to a laboratory for testing and can take approximately 1 – 2 weeks to obtain the final results.

So, circling back to who should be tested: All adults and adolescents between the ages of 13 and 64 should receive an HIV test annually as part of their routine medical care.

HIV VIRAL LOAD: A whole blood sample can also be sent to the laboratory to evaluate the presence of HIV. This blood test detects for presence of HIV in whole blood products and is measured as the number of HIV copies.

It's Complicated:

Fired for Gay Facebook Status Berlin Sylvestre, Staff Writer

Tattoos glide up both the former Catholic’s olive-complected arms, small trails of music on two sets of staffs. The right arm displays a passage from “Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus” by Messiaen (Praise to the Eternity of Jesus); the left arm reveals a musical notation from Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely.” His hair is cut in a modern fashion, bangs swooping to the right above his chic specs. He’s thin, tone, and speaks in a gentle, but assured, timbre. He honestly isn’t the man I visualized on the other end of the phone. Surely the baby-faced gentleman across the table from me wasn’t the former organist of St. Brigid Catholic Church who was given the pinkslip by a temporary pastor because his private Facebook account affirmed he was in love with a man; the same guy who, because of such, was asked to gather his belongings and turn in his keys while being followed by one of the church’s watchdogs, like a thief being shadowed by a suspicious shop owner. This young man with a great smile seemed calm despite being freshly spurned by the very organization he’d devoted his life to. “I love the Catholic church,” Nick Johns confesses. “I grew up with it. I love church music, too, and I’ve always wanted to make the experience beautiful for a lot of people.” Such a shame that the honor (which was also his job) was callously stripped from him a few weeks ago. Let’s go back to how it all happened. Sometime

around January, an anonymous individual tipped off Monsignor David Talley — the head of St. Brigid Catholic at the time — that Nick is not only gay, but also supports samesex marriage. Facebook was the source of the information and Nick still isn’t sure whether the individual took screenshots from his account, but the indictment was irrefutable and Nick didn’t deny its truth. Father Talley, not particularly fazed by the news but rather supportive of the young musician, suggested Nick simply make his Facebook account private. After Nick willingly did so, it was never mentioned again. When Monsignor Talley was promoted to bishop, the church appointed a temporary replacement, Father Joshua Allen, a younger man with (according to the church’s website) a penchant for old saints, college football, and Nascar. Father Josh, though brand new and temporary, wasted no time in calling Nick to inform him that he was under suspension and possible termination due to his “moral dissention.” Nick was told to get his things from the church

grounds and turn in his keys. He was taken off the church’s website and locked out of his church email account. After that, radio silence. Nick’s calls to the Archdiocese ’s human resources department were fruitless. They appeared as shocked as he was — odd, considering Father Josh claimed the orders came from HR. Days later, with his fate still hanging in the balance, a choir member called him to let him know the group was told that Nick was no longer with the church and his replacement was being sought. He asked the music director if she knew anything about that, and was informed that she was instructed by Father Josh to relay that message. One would suppose it makes sense when considering this is a temporary pastor who, according to Nick, capriciously injects politics into his homilies; a temporary pastor who received a standing ovation after giving a sermon on how people aren’t true Catholics if they support pro-choice politicians like Obama; one who, in the name of Christ, uses his pulpit privileges to spew conservative talking points. In a post written for the Catholic News Agency last year, Father Josh asserted that “homosexual unions [are] really just the natural progression of a general assault on marriage that has been moving in force” and that his interest “as a priest is fixing the problem.” Apparently, the purging of your own is fair game in Father Josh’s eyes. Nick tells me Father Josh would uncomfortably greet him as they passed each other in hallways, always turning his eyes downward, a complete

shift in the love he felt from Father Talley, who would slip into the church and meditate while listening to Nick practice. “He even said my name six times in a homily,” Nick says of Father Talley. “When you grow up Catholic, you’re told [being gay] is wrong,” Nick tells me. “Being homosexual isn’t considered a sin in itself, but acting on it is.” It was never discussed whether he acted on his urges, though. “It isn’t anyone’s business,” he rightly says. “And besides, some people are quick to forget that Jesus hung around with sinners.” The normal protocol for termination begins with a verbal warning, a written warning, then your removal. Nick had none of these. He just had Facebook. “It wasn't like I was in the church waving rainbow flags — I was just doing my job,” Nick explains. Though not outwardly so, he admits he’s still upset with the decision. “If a Catholic were fired from their job for being Catholic, how do you think they’d react? They’d say their freedom was under attack. My freedom is being openly and blatantly attacked all the time.” To this day, Nick has only heard from his employers at St. Brigid’s once and it was an email that sought his new address to handle the business of his final check. “I’ve been looking on Craigslist for jobs, but …” he starts, but finishes with a head shake. “Music is my passion. There's just something about sitting at an organ, but it’s not like you can get a job playing one for Delta.” We move onto the topic of the scandals that have rocked the Catholic church, such as child-rape and molestation. Nick furrows. “Pedophilia and homosexuality are two different things. [Pedophilia] is a huge ground for getting rid of someone and for prosecuting them, especially,” he says. “But they move these people around to different churches instead of firing them, and I'm fired for being gay and out?” He understands that the church is well within its rights to let him go; he just thinks it was a bad call. “The church teaches us that God is love and God created us all,” he says. “If He made me this way, should I not be able to celebrate the gift to love?” I notice another tattoo on his left calf. When I implore, he tells me it’s an image of the vocal frequency of Luke, his boyfriend of two years, saying “I love you.” Like his other tattoos, it must sound beautiful when played. Letters of support for Nick have hit his inbox, but so have letters praising Father Josh’s decision. “The positive definitely outweighs the negative,” Nick says. Many organists. pastors, and parishioners at other churches have given their support, among them the Catholic Archdiocese, St. John's Lutheran Church, Virginia Highland Church, and a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. In a show of solidarity, Nick tells me the Atlanta Chapter of the American Guild of Organists — an organization that finds jobs for church musicians — will not be a resource for St. Brigid.

There’s a story about St. Brigid of Kildare, for whom the church is named, that recounts the time she appealed to the King of Leinster for some land to build a convent, only to be met with dismissal. She prayed to God to soften his heart, and when she went back to the king, he laughingly agreed to give her as much land as her small cloak would cover. When her friends banded together, they each grabbed a corner of the cloak and miraculously stretched it for miles, the king knew God had given his blessing and soon after, St. Brigid founded the convent. Perhaps if the community banded together in a show of support, the “king” in this tale will one day realize that God loves — and has a place — for us all.

The Tripoli Tour Interview by Dino Thompson-Sarmiento, Senior Writer Edits by Berlin Sylvestre 54 : June 20, 2013

T

ony what brings you to the ATL? I am coming to open for Joan Rivers on the 29th of June at the Atlanta Symphony Hall. I’m also there to support a local Atlanta charity, Positive Impact. I'll be doing a benefit at Blake's on the Park on Saturday, June 29th between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Come out and support this benefit! There will be food, cocktails, and so much more. I’m so excited to come to Atlanta. It’s always such a great time and I’m just thrilled I’m able to do both in one trip. By the way you can ride in style with a designated driver for that day just download the Uber App on your smartphone and enter the code UBERLAUGHS for a discount and come see me at Blake’s! We’re thrilled to have you! We gotta ask: What is it like to work with the Queen of Comedy Joan Rivers? I would love to tell you that she’s tough as nails and she’s a total bitch who’s critical and hates everything, but that’s just not the case. The truth is, Joan has become like a grandmother to me. She is affectionate — we kiss ‘hello,’ we say ‘I love you’ when we’re saying goodnight, and she is far too involved in my life that any employer should be. I just recently moved into a new house and her very first question was: “Do you have enough china?” That tells you a little something about the lady I work for. She’s just wonderful. She’s constantly trying to find me a husband — she’s a Jewish mother, after all, and that’s what they do. She doesn’t understand why I’m such a nice boy, but don’t have someone. We laugh so hard and all the time. I’ve learned so much from her and she has the most incredible work ethic that I’ve ever witnessed. I’m so proud to call her a friend, a part of my family, and a complete mentor. You work as a writer for “Fashion Police.” What do you prefer: being in the background or being on stage? I definitely prefer being on stage and being on camera. That was my dream as a little gay boy growing up in Phoenix, AZ. I never saw anyone on television that I thought was like me. I always wanted to find a way, as an adult, to be on television so that other little gay kids growing up would see someone like them on television and in their homes. That said, to get to be behind the scenes and write jokes that are made 10 times better through the talent of someone like Joan Rivers is incredible as well. I really, really love my life — I have the best of both worlds. Have you always been open about your sexuality? I always knew. I remember being very small, maybe four or five years old, and noticing billboards and advertisements always had a man, a woman, and a child. I remember thinking to myself that when I grow up, I don’t imagine [my life] with a man, a woman, and a child; I imagine me, another man, and a child. So I knew there was something that wasn’t typical [about me]. I spent a very short time realizing there was no one like me on television, so I thought: “It must be really horrible … to be ‘that thing.’” I remember watching “Charlie’s Angels,” and they showed pimps and drug dealers and criminals, but they never showed [gay people]. I remember thinking: “Gosh! It must be even worse!” Luckily, my parents were so accepting. I officially came out when I was 17, but I don’t think they needed me to actually say it. I think it’d been pretty clear. I never felt like my family was going to turn their backs on me or kick me out. Tell us about your time as a Chippendale stripper. It’s really weird. I made my living as a singer until 2001, and you really just go from job to job. You’re singing what people tell you to sing, so I was Aladdin for The Walt Disney Company for three years. At the same time, I got hired to sing for a Chippendale’s European tour, so I literally went from being this Disney character to being this

guy singing between male strippers — that was a weird adjustment. One of the things that I always try to tell people, regardless of what they do for a living, is: “Say yes to everything.” All those experiences add up to make you who you are. I’m so grateful for it and the truth is, it wasn’t my favorite experience, dealing with male strippers. They weren’t the smartest, kindest people I’ve ever dealt with, but I will say: There’s nothing quite as hilarious as watching two straight men fistfight over waterproof mascara. Tony, I think you’re a man’s man because of your willingness to fly out to Atlanta early and help raise funds for Positive Impact. Have you found your charity platform as you gain fame? It comes back to that “Say yes to everything” philosophy. Anytime there’s a charitable organization that could possibly be helped by me showing up and telling my dirty stories for an hour, I’m thrilled to be there. There are people doing much tougher work. There are people volunteering at phone banks, the really tough fundraising, and those are the people who really deserve the credit. I’m thrilled anytime there’s an AIDS-related charity. I’m 43 years old. I’m of that generation that became sexually active right when MTV was putting condoms on bananas. I’m part of the first generation that knew what safer sex was and what the rules were and we’ve never really lived any other way. I find so many men my age are incredibly complacent about it and I find that troubling. So anytime I can do any work for an AIDS/HIV-related organization, I’m thrilled to step up.

When can we see you in the thong again? *laughs* I still can’t believe I thought that was a good idea, but I did it. I try to say yes to everything, and I will tell you that I’m such a sucker for a man with a big smile and a tiny ass. That combination can pretty much get me to do absolutely anything.

What can we expect on season four of “Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best”? Oh, it’s great. We’ve been given the greenlight for season four and, as you know, Joan’s birthday is coming up in June. It’s pretty rare for a star of a television show to reach that milestone. I’m really hoping to incorporate some of the celebration, [even though] she doesn’t like birthdays. Melissa’s going to have to twist her arm

and do a lot of secret planning behind the scenes in order for there to be any celebration — Joan’s just not having it. I hope the cameras are around to capture all of that. It’s such an adventure. I’m excited to see what happens in season four. Joan’s career is constantly getting hotter and hotter and she’s getting busier and busier, and at some point, she’s going to snap. I think the show’s going to be more about finding balance.

You’ve mentioned you’re single. Besides the smile and the small ass, what are you looking for in a man and do you think you can find him in the South? I had my sophomore year of high school at Roswell High, so I only lived in Atlanta for one year. I was 14, so it’s not like I was really dating. I would love to have a nice romance with a Southern boy. I think everyone should experience that, but I’m only in town for a couple days. Can we make this happen? I’m at that age where I want a husband and a house. I work so much and I travel so frequently, that I’d love to have someone that could share it, that could be there at home at night. That’s very important to me. Thank you Tony and we look forward to seeing you on the 29th at Blake’s. For tickets to benefit Positive Impact please visit https://www.xorbia.com/e/pi/tripoli.

Interview by Dino Thompson-Sarmiento, Senior Writer Edits by Berlin Sylvestre Photos by Charles William Bush

60 : June 20, 2013

Back in high school, instead of buying Van Halen or Journey music, I bought Joan Rivers’ comedy cassettes and at night, I’d slide them in my Walkman and laugh through the night. I don’t know what my family thought I was doing in the dark, in bed giggling hysterically, but I was only listening to the zany Joan Rivers. One of her jokes stands out most: the one about meeting Queen Elizabeth II. She said she was so nervous that she didn’t know what to do in her presence, so she licked the back of the monarch’s head because she’d only seen her on stamps! I had such a visual of that, I still laugh … Joan welcome back to the South! How you keep up with your hectic schedule? You’re filming a reality show, you host “Fashion Police,” you do live shows, you have your jewelry collection, you’re a theater critic, you have been on “The Apprentice” twice, you’re a mother, a grandmother, and you give lectures. What’s next — “Dancing with the Stars”? How do you do it all and why? The answer is major drugs! Major, major, major drugs! You give an old Jew drugs (as long as you wrap it a matzo ball), and I will take it. Joan, I know your birthday is in June and you’re turning 80. How are you celebrating Joan’s Jubilee? I’m going to call Betty White! She’ll sound older than I am. I’m praying that a nurse will answer — that’ll cheer me up! E! Entertainment did a whole week of “Fashion Police” every night, and I worked on QVC that weekend. I love to work! I worked through [my birthday]. My family is not one for birthdays. I just think it's a little embarrassing when you’re an adult and have people go, “Ohhh, it’s your birthday!” Oh, shut up! We have such a big staff between “Joan and Melissa” and “Fashion Police,” the QVC jewelry, and now the InBedWithJoan. com internet show. We’ll have a birthday every three days, so you watch the staff get fatter. We try to play down birthdays. If I see one more goddamned red velvet cake … *screams* Let’s talk about your lady loving past. We know all about you and the Barbra Streisand lesbian scene back in the ‘60s, and we’ve seen you make out with a woman on your show “Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best” but what about Phyllis Diller? What was going on there – was she your mentor and inspiration? She was lovely, but no. I had no mentor, nobody truly helped me and I’m not being angry about it. You can’t wait for a mentor; just get out there and do your own damn thing. But! Phyllis was very generous. She was never angry that another young comedienne was coming up — she was very encouraging. She was really nice and you can’t say that about a lot of people. She was a great person who had a wonderful life and I can’t say enough nice things about her. She would go into Greenwich Village when I was starting out. Barbra Streisand was on the bill with me, and Phyllis came out and sat in the front row. It was a club called Bonsoir. She laughed loud and applauded and was so encouraging to young people. FENUXE.COM : 61

Joan your support of AIDS & HIV issues, animals, cancer, children, disaster relief, education, the LGBT community, health, hunger, poverty, and refugees is admirable but it all started with women’s rights. You set the example that a woman can and will make it in a man’s world. What was your driving force and what advice do you have for those who are now fighting for social change and equality? Well, if you’re talkin’ about gay men … Yes. I think being gay now is so accepted. Maybe I’m crazy. It’s still very hard in small [cities]. If I were a gay man in a small city, I’d get out of there as soon as I could get my pumps on! Every time I hear someone say something anti-gay, I say: “Look at your family. Go tell that to your cousin over there who’s redecorating.” It’s still tough, it’s still hard, but thank God there are so many places you can go and live life and be happy. And who gives a fuck? They don’t want you? We’re outta here! But I’m against gay marriage and there are two reasons: One, it’s costing me a fortune in gifts! I became a minister and I’m officiating a lot of my gay friends’ weddings. Two, gay marriage means gay divorce — think about it! You’re a tough lady who has overcome many challenges and uphill battles. Can you share an intimate moment about your life when you were vulnerable but kept your chin up and kept fighting the good fight? Every goddamn day … and the only advice I have to give is to run your own race. Don’t worry about what the guy next to you is doing, and for God’s sake go after your dreams before you turn around and go, “I’m 80?! Where did it go?!” It goes so fast, so fast. What made your parents so hip and progressive that they supported their young daughter who searched for a career in comedy 60 years ago? I think — and it’s a wonderful question and I’m not making a joke here — that my parents just never said to us: “Oh, you’re girls so you can’t be a doctor; you have to be a nurse.” There was never that ‘because you’re a woman’ thing. From the beginning, they said: “Do what you want to do with your life!” My sister was very smart. I was smart, but she was verrry smart and they always expected us to go out and do something wonderful. They encouraged us. They didn’t encourage me to go into acting. They would’ve encouraged me to be a brain surgeon on Mars. They would’ve said: “Yeah! You could do that.” But when I said that I wanted to be in show business, they were very, very, very, very, VERY upset. And I understand it. I look at my daughter Melissa and I wonder if she came to me and said, “I want to be a hooker,” if I’d say: “Good for you, learn some tricks! I want you to be the best hooker there is! I want you on your back, moving those hips like nobody else in the world!”

Thank you. It’s all because of me; I take full credit for everything. It’s fun because I’m part of a household now, so I’m not something special or foreign to [my grandson] Cooper. “Oh, here comes Grandma! We have to go out to dinner.” I’m part of the fabric — that’s wonderful. We’re a real family. It’s great, great, great. Are you going to encourage your grandson to go into acting? No. At first, I was a little upset that he wasn’t gay — no one wants to listen to Stephen Sondheim in the house with me! He doesn’t sit at my feet and go, “You really met Judy Garland?” He couldn’t care less. Unless I told him Judy played lacrosse, he’s not interested. But [acting] is such a rough business, even for people with a lot of talent. I’d like him to find a profession with stability and there’s no stability to our profession. But again, if it’s what he really wants, then goddamnit, do it.

"I want you to be the best hooker there is. I want you on your back, moving those hips like nobody else in the world!”

How about the dynamics between you, your daughter, and your grandson? Has that changed after the show? Oh, it’s been wonderful! Boy, you really are a good interviewer. It’s been fabulous. I have to live there while we do the reality show and I also live there because Melissa is an executive producer on “Fashion Police.” She’s doing an amazing job, by the way. I’ve seen her change over the years and she’s stronger, she’s found her legs.

Thank you Joan and we look forward to seeing you on June 29th at the Atlanta Symphony Hall! Tickets are at www.atlantasymphony.org 62 : June 20, 2013

Which “game of Thrones” character are you?

GemIni [may 21 – JUN. 22] Your ability to play both sides against the middle while seeming innocent makes us wonder what the hell you’re up to, Littlefinger.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUl. 22] Mysterious (and a little scary sometimes), we’re well aware that you’re holding back your power for something bigger, Red Priestess Melisandre.

LEO [JUl. 23 – aUg. 22] That strong will and hot head of yours makes for some of the best entertainment, and we got your back, Arya!

virgo [aUg. 23 – SEpT. 22] Grounded and rational, you gently try to help but no one really seems to listen. Sucks for them. You’re Catelyn.

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22] You’re steeped in romance, but are coming to learn that your heart has been foolish lately, Sansa.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] We all know who you’ve been sleeping with, but we still secretly think you’re crazy-hot, Jaime.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21] There’s no question that you’re ruthless at times, but your beauty keeps us enthralled, Cersei.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JaN. 19] Your wit is so sharp that people often overlook the depth of wisdom behind it, but that’s OK by you, Tyrion.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] Cool-headed but a complete badass, you’re just as gorgeous as you are unstoppable, Daenerys. (Or Khaleesi, whichever you prefer.)

PISCES [FEB. 19 – maR. 20] Though childlike on the exterior, your keen intuition is making a warrior of you by the day, Bran.

ARIES [maR. 21 – apR. 19] Are you brutal for your friends … or just brutal? We can’t figure out why we like you so much, Hound!

Taurus [apR. 20 – may 20] You’re so hot and so unattainable when you want to be, it’s no wonder Robb Stark betrayed the Freys for your love, Talisa.

Holler Poodles!! Politics and activism is an interesting topic for me to write about only because I’ve never thought of myself as very political. An activist... maybe? I have a true disdain for politics as a whole--especially the constant fighting and attitude of “i’m right, therefore you must be wrong.” It really drives me a little crazy. So much so I usually retreat to changing the subject. In the grand scheme of things, I guess its much like anyone who is passionate about anything--you fight for what you believe in. I’ve spent the better part of my drag career raising money and awareness for HIV/AIDS and as an entertainer and writer, I try to remain mostly impartial. To me, its more about encouraging someone to make sure their voice is heard rather than make them agree with my opinion.

tell you the number of people I’ve heard say really hurtful things about drag in general but those same individuals are the first to ask you to do a benefit for them. No matter what your feelings are about politics and activism are, I encourage you to get out and vote every opportunity to make sure your voice is heard. Lover and lashes

I’ve never been very vocal in my political beliefs because I look at politics as a very slippery slope. Once you are pigeon holed as this or that, it is very hard for people to see you as anything other than that. Like most people I know, I have very strong feelings about what I believe but I also recognize my friends who I love and respect have very strong opinions. The few I may choose to discuss politics with are intelligent people (amongst other things) who can converse and debate issues without judging me because I may feel differently. The fact that we may disagree about an issue doesn’t negate our feelings for each other. I have learned to just respect that other people may feel differently and that our individual voices will be heard on election day. Activism seems to go hand in hand with drag. The sheer act of being in drag can be construed by some as a kind of “F*ck You” to the establishment. In the early days of the AIDS crisis, many individuals were in drag to “Act Up” and raise awareness and demand the government do something. Activists have recognized for a long time that a man in a dress garners a lot of attention. And as such, drag queens are often the first people contacted for a cause, benefit etc. Yet, we are also the first individuals maligned by our own community. While attitudes and perceptions are gradually changing, I can’t 70 : June 20, 2013

At Thursday's orientation, there is an allAmerican BBQ with live music by the lake, complete with beer and wine. And after dinner, there will be s’mores and an acoustic sing-along around a fire pit. “Most of the music is going to be by the lake and we are going to have two different DJs,” Tabb says. “One is going to have dance music, and then [the other DJ will be playing] '80s music." If DJs aren't your thing, there will be a live band by the lake.
