If you told me a few months

ago that flying cars and personal spy drones were on the horizon, I would’ve thought you were living in Editor’s a sci-fi novel. But, as we found while researching the latest tech gadgets, I can definitively say the future is here. In just a few short years, we might be living in a world where 3D bio printing of transplant organs is commonplace, where every moment of your life is recorded, and streets charge electric cars wirelessly and glow in the dark to warn drivers of potentially dangerous conditions. It seems to me that if we can imagine it, it will become reality. So, enjoy our tech guide and let your imagination run wild!

There is something about the ever-changing world of technology that connects seamlessly with the fast-paced world of fashion. Our dressing habits have been changed immensely by technology - just think of the whole nano-fiber-dry-fit technology that has completely revolutionized activewear or how laser-cutting and digital textile printing have created new and innovative ways for designers to express themselves.

siMPle solUtion that works great: the chest pocket stores your phone and collar loops keep your ear buds in place.

The next step in the relationship between fashion and technology seems to be clothing that is more digitally networked. We are becoming more and more attached to our personal digital gadgetry so it seems the natural progression is to literally wear them. The next generation of clothing cleverly incorporates our gadgets into their fabric and integrates technology in new and exciting ways.

EVENT

in the Park The annual Backpack helping school supply drive is kids in need. Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

2013 marks the ten year anniversary of For the Kid in All of Us. A landmark for any volunteer charity organization and even more impressive considering the incredible accomplishments they achieve every year: 38,000 toys, 9,400 backpacks and more than $474,000 have been donated within a decade of dedicated service. Their hard work all year pays off and those numbers are the proof. For The Kid in All of Us strives to not only raise awareness of the problem, but also to help in ways that other organizations don’t. This is why For The Kid in All of Us helps underprivileged families with things that may seem second nature to most, but are a critical need for others.

This change will help the organization distribute more backpacks as they won’t have to spend so much time double-checking each bag to make sure everything was included. But for those not aware of the ‘virtual’ donation or eager to stuff their own backpack, Alison is consoling: “We certainly will not turn anyone away who brings a filled backpack to the garden party.”

Another change for the annual event is its departure from Piedmont Park to the beautiful Cator Woolford Gardens. “We loved the Piedmont Park location and moved simply because we thought it was time for a fresh location”, Alison Hall explains. “The event has been held in several different parks since its inception, and this is an opportunity for the event to evolve into both a volunteer event Alison Hall has been involved with the organization for many earlier in the day, and a separate garden party in the afternoon,” years. She’s been on For the Kid in All of Us’ board for six years she continued. and served as president of the board for the past two years. Last year Backpack in the Park collected nearly 1,800 backpacks, and This year’s event will be a kid-friendly cocktail party with delicious Alison tells us that this year’s goal is 3,000 backpacks. “It’s a lofty treats, live entertainment and a silent auction - all benefitting the goal”, Alison says, “but we think our supporters are up to the beneficiaries of For The Kid in All of Us. The selected beneficiaries challenge”. do amazing work but are underfunded and this is where the backpacks have the most meaningful impact. For The Kid in All This year all donations will be in the form of ‘virtual backpacks’, of Us’ beneficiaries include organizations like AID Atlanta, Atlanta which means that each contribution is not a physical backpack, Children’s Shelter, Camp Horizon ,Chris Kids, and the East Lake but a $35 (online) or $45 (at the door) donation. The donations Foundation. will be used to fill as many backpacks as possible. “Our goal is to stuff, sort, and distribute as many of the collected backpacks Backpack in the Park will take place Sunday, July 28th from as we possibly can earlier in the day during the volunteer event. 4-7pm at Cator Woolford Gardens, 1815 S. Ponce de Leon Ave. When we receive online donations it just makes it easier for us to purchase pre-filled backpacks for quick delivery to beneficiaries. Kids go back to school the week after the event and we want them For tickets, a full list of beneficiaries, and information on how to get involved please go to www.forthekid.org to be prepared.”

XPLORE

provincetown: The Perfect Gay Paradise Tyler Calkins, Editor-in-Chief

Boston

Provincetown

When you step off the ferry and into Provincetown there is a feeling like none other that overtakes you - A warm, inviting, and energizing feeling. What other gay beach destination has a Human Rights Campaign store in the middle of town? There is no doubt that Ptown, MA is a tiny slice of gay heaven nestled at the end of Cape Cod. 24 : July 18, 2013

GETTING THERE: Admittedly... getting there can be a wee bit tricky. But, that makes your ultimate arrival all the more sweet. If you’ve got precious little time and a bulging *ahem* wallet you can charter a direct flight from HartsfieldJackson to Ptown. I chose the more affordable route and hopped on the 90 minute ferry from Boston. Just watch out for really rough seas because it can quickly become more than the average seafarer can stomach. If the seas are rough - don’t worry - they’ll give you plenty of advance notice. Immediately it becomes clear why the spirit of the island is so cheerful. I haven’t been so relaxed in ages until I stopped and took time to feel the warm New England summer sun kissing my skin and the salty sea air providing a welcomed breeze. The energy is cheerful and positively electric. Wrap up your zen moment, grab your gear, and then hire a rickshaw to take you to your homeaway-from-home on the Cape. The rickshaw is an economical and fun way to experience everything that Provincetown has to offer. It doesn’t hurt that the rickshaw drivers are insanely cute and have the calves of my dreams.

Prince Albert

W DID You knoW? Ptown has the highest concentration of gay couples in the country (5.1% of the total population - National Average is 0.6%)

WHAT TO DO: Provincetown is surrounded on three sides by water and is home to some of the best beaches in the country. Most of the best beaches in the area are easily accessible by bike trails. These include the well-known harbor beaches and the ocean beaches at Race Point. I suggest renting a bike and pedaling the short trip to Race Point. Just don't forget to take some sandals, water, and a snack. Beachfront privacy is extremely romantic, but that also means there aren’t any tasty gay bistros nearby.

WHERE TO STAY: Yes, there is a Holiday Inn around the area, but, I hope you’re not staying there. You’ll miss out on what makes vacationing in Ptown so great. Provincetown is known for their unique and incredibly cute bed and breakfasts. Many of them were built in the late 18th century and are in the heart of all of the action. I recommend the Prince Albert, Gabriel's at the Ashbrooke Inn, or the Land's End Inn. The only downside is that their bathrooms (and showers) are very small. (That's what she said.) Although all of them are pet friendly, be prepared to pay a pet fee upwards of $100 per diem.

The footpath from the bike trail to the beach looks like an Ansel Adams print and leads you through a marsh wilderness flanked with historic cape cod lighthouses. It's a good hike to the beach and depending on the tide you may have to wade through water, but the trek is worth it. The sheer amount of wildlife is incredible - seagulls, herons, bullfrogs, crabs, and even a few rabbits playing along the shore. It's an immensely peaceful spot with nothing but the gentle waves on the shore and the storied whispers of the wind to break the silence. Whether you're at Race Point soaking up the sun with a P-townie, adding shells to your seashell collection, or cuddling with your partner under the stars by the shore, this is one beach not to be missed. After a long day at the beach don't forget to head back into town for some shopping! There are tons

of charming clothing shops, old fashion candy shops, and artist galleries. The shops all have a distinctly New England feel and you never know what you might find. There is everything from gourmet foods at Cape Cod Gourmet to fine art and antiques from the 17th to 21st centuries. Brunch is always a great way to start the day - I recommend a little place called Cafe Heaven. Their breakfast selections are to die for, literally. While you're waiting in line (there is always a line there cause the food really is that good) head across the street to enjoy street performers and music. I'm not normally a huge fan of pork sausage, but Cafe Heaven could easily call themselves Hog Heaven.

The Pilgrims first landed here in November of 1620 A-House

Not a breakfast fan? A lot of my friends aren't either. Their lunch menu is just as impressive as their brunch menu. If you want to try some local seafood I recommend the seared scollops served with fennel and orange. While every bar in P-town is gay-friendly, there are several that you can't miss: Atlantic House Dance Club (A-House), Wave (at Crown & Anchor), and I also really enjoyed Monkey Bar.

Great beaches, uber gay friendly townies, awesome parties, and scores of romantic spots... what else could you want from a trip to the beach? People always say that you don't understand the allure of Ptown until you've been there. They weren't lying. If you've never experienced the gay beach bliss that is Ptown I highly recommend you plan a vacation soon.

fun facts: Take a close look at the buildings along the main drag - several of them have a ceramic tile that bares an image of what looks like a river or a boat. These ceramic tiles mark the houses that were floated over to Provincetown from Long Point, a early settlement that was abandoned in the late 1860s. About 30 homes in all were moved. To this day, no one knows why settlers abandoned the town. After the decisions on DOMA and Prop 8 were announced the Human Rights Campaign in town served wedding cake as the entire town celebrated.

By Michael Burcham, PhD When you screen as many new startup ideas a week as I do, you have to have a system to stay focused and keep the ball moving. My system is simple. There are three groups of ideas: A, B, and C (notice I said groups of ideas, not people).

Successful entrepreneurial leaders typically have a well-articulated goal. They have real clarity of purpose and work toward that singular goal with a zest, that for most, is unimaginable. I was reminded of the importance of a strong goal when I stumbled across this quote: “If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much!”

I have to persuade those with ideas in Group C not to quit their day jobs—just yet… Our mentors educate Group B on where improvements can be made before they are ready take their ideas into prime time. But, it is those in Group A that have something special. It’s a combination of a great business idea, an identified market, a willingness to learn, and most importantly, a particular character trait that I can see a mile away. And it has nothing to do with who their daddy knows, where they went to school, how outgoing they are, or how much money they have. This unique trait that distinguishes the real entrepreneurial leader is grit. Grit is what makes an entrepreneur successful, and it’s what Thomas Edison referred to when he said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” Grit is the quality that allows people to accomplish their goals, to actualize their dreams, to create a legacy. Because we’re in the South, I have to make a slight adjustment: to be a leader not only do you have to have grit but also GRITS. GRITS are the five things that that make a leader—and an entrepreneur—truly remarkable.

Michael Burcham is one of the country’s leading openly gay businessmen and entrepreneurs. Burcham is the President and CEO of the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. He has extensive experience in healthcare innovation, entrepreneurship, and startup venture coaching and has served as President of ParadigmHealth in addition to Theraphysics, a venture-backed specialty healthcare firm managing rehabilitation services. He is founder and Director of the Accelerator Summer Business Institute, a 4-week intensive immersion program designed to challenge undergraduate students to develop their own personal brands and business skills and teaches healthcare innovation and strategy at the Owen Graduate School of Management. 30 : July 18, 2013

Great leaders and great entrepreneurs are able to deal with stress and uncertainty. They know how to develop enough mental “hardness” to persevere, and they take on challenges instead of running from them. The really great entrepreneurial leaders are often the ones at the back of the room, but they are successful today because of their ability to persevere.

Entrepreneurial leaders are innovative. The entrepreneurs I admire most have learned to think through possibilities and practicalities. They have a sharp distaste for the status quo and a drive to think beyond yesterday’s solutions for tomorrow’s problems. They embrace their curiosity.

Entrepreneurs trust the people around them. This trust is rooted in a confident expectation of something, in optimism, and in hope. The truly successful ones learn to trust others to help execute their vision and turn their idea into something real. Entrepreneurs wear multiple hats in the early days of their business—they simply do whatever it takes for the business to succeed. As the business grows, this unilateral decision-making style must change. Plenty of businesses, ideas, and campaigns have failed because of a leader’s inability to trust.

The one trait that I admire more than anything is that entrepreneurs share their success, or as we say in entrepreneurial and leadership circles, they “pay it forward.” Great entrepreneurs understand that doing well and doing good are not the same thing, and they are mindful to do both. Growing up as a poor kid from Mississippi, I know first hand what it means to have someone pay-it-forward, and having someone reach out to me as a mentor has made all the difference in my life. It is why I do what I do and give other young entrepreneurs the same opportunity that someone gave me.

WAYS TO YOUR GEORGIA POWER BILL

1

SWITCH OUT YOUR LIGHT BULBS

Turning off the lights when you leave a room will save energy and money, but remembering to do this is more difficult than changing a light bulb. The more expensive LED light bulbs use 57 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. In other words, an LED bulb you leave on all the time is more efficient than an incandescent bulb that's only on 50 percent of the time. Try Cree LED bulbs (creebulb.com) which now start at less than $10 and are available at Home Depot on Ponce.

SOLAR PANELS ARE CHEAPER THAN YOU THINK

Tyler Calkins, Editor-in-Chief

Technology is awesome, but it can be expensive—and not just for early adopters. In case you haven't looked at your power bill recently, Georgia electricity prices are steadily rising, and the fact that you’ve got 28 gadgets plugged in at the same time probably isn’t helping. But, your bill doesn’t have to rise with electricity prices. Here are eight energy hacks that will help you save money and the environment:

2

Solar energy is a great way to cut electric bill costs, but purchasing and installing solar panels can cost $30,000 or more. There’s a better solution: Solar leasing. Coming to Georgia in early October, Sunrun (sunrunhome.com) lets you skip the upfront cost of solar energy. The company purchases panels and installs them in your home for free, and you just pay for the energy they produce, which is less than you pay for grid electricity. Of course, your mileage will vary—the effectiveness of solar panels depends on a number of factors, including which direction your house faces—but Sunrun estimates its customers save more than $10,000 over a 20-year contract. Besides, there’s also the satisfaction of living at least partially off the grid.

KEEP YOUR FRIDGE AND FREEZER PACKED

Want to save money? Fill your fridge with stuff—even if it’s just beer. Why does this work? Science! Foods (solids) and drinks (liquids) are dense, which means it takes a lot of energy to heat them up. Air, on the other hand, heats up easily. So if your fridge is full of food and drink, it’ll stay cold. But if it’s empty—full of air—it’ll warm quickly, and the compressor will have to turn on in order to cool it down again (since your fridge is programmed to stay at a set temperature). The best part: liquids are about twice as hard to heat as organic solids, so a fridge full of beer will stay cold for about twice as long as a fridge full of food. I'll drink to that!

4

INVEST IN A SMART THERMOSTAT

There are three types of thermostats: Traditional, programmable, and smart. Traditional thermostats let you control the temperature in your home, while programmable thermostats let you program certain temperatures at certain times. For example, you can tell your thermostat to turn off the heating at night. Smart thermostats, such as the Nest ($249, nest.com) or the ecobee (around $300, ecobee.com) are totally different—they learn your behaviors, can be programmed remotely, and can even sense when you’re on vacation. Think of how much money you’ll save the next time you go on a twoweek vacation and forget to turn the air conditioner off.

5

USE APPLIANCES IN THE EVENING

This is a simple, low-cost hack, but it works: Use heatgenerating appliances in the evening. Heat-generating appliances, such as stoves and ovens, driers, and dishwashers, make your house hotter. And if it’s already hot outside (thanks, sun), your air conditioner is probably already working pretty hard to keep the house cool. The last thing it needs is for you to add heat to the mix. So, wait until it’s cool outside before you fire up the oven or wash your sheets.

MICROWAVE EVERYTHING

Speaking of heat-generating appliances, one appliance that doesn’t generate (too much) heat is your microwave. "The microwave is one of the most energy-efficient appliances out there," says Chris Capra, a public information specialist with the Georgia Power Company. So, when you boyfriend asks why your romantic dinner consists of TV dinners and hot dogs, assure him that you’re not lazy—you just care about the environment.

8

34 : July 18, 2013

7

USE ELECTRICITY DURING OFF-PEAK HOURS

CONTROL LIGHTS FROM YOUR SMARTPHONE

If you really want to go whole-hog into the LED thing, try the Belkin WeMo light switches & plugs (See Page 48) or the Philips Hue bulbs ($200 for three, meethue.com). These color-changing bulbs are wireless, which means you can control them from your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using the Philips Hue app. Using Wi-Fi, you can control the bulbs from anywhere in the world—turn them on and off, dim or brighten them, or change their colors. You can also set timers (if you want to wake up to natural light) and create custom light settings based on photos.

All electricity is not created equal. According to Capra, there are peak hours during which electricity costs more. During the summer, our peak hours are between 4 and 7 p.m., so you'll pay more for electricity during these hours. Avoid using appliances or charging gadgets during these hours.

How To Pick the Right Swimsuit: Yes, finding the right swimsuit that matches your physique is no day at the beach - but follow these simple pointers and it will be!

Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

If you have ever been to the Joining Hearts main event at the Aquatic Center in Piedmont Park you know that it is splashes of fun. And that there is one piece of clothing that is of utter importance: The swimsuit! Considering the fact that you are almost naked (in public!) picking out the right swimsuit is key for not only looking your best, but eliminating any signs of uncomfortable vulnerability. Here is our guide to the best swimsuit for you.

If You Are Slim or Skinny

Don’t wear too much of a swimsuit so you are all covered by fabric. Smaller swimsuits (even swim briefs) will be best on you. Make sure that the legs are narrow so the swimwear won’t resemble a skirt.

If You Are Of Medium Build

If you don’t have the body fat percentage of a supermodel, but you're fit and in no way overweight, you're ideal for swim trunks or square front swimsuits. Keep the suit trim but not tight so it is as comfortable as possible.

Love knows no borders, but the law does. At Klinke Immigration, we handle the ever-changing rules of LGBT immigration policy and can find a way for love to flourish in the melting pot.

38 : July 18, 2013

What Not To Wear If you want to look your best in a swimsuit avoid over-sized boardshorts. They're not a good fit for any body type. Plus, you'll be taking out half the pool with you everytime you get out because the large pockets hold so much water! So shorter (above the knee) is better all-over. Also, your butt is no billboard so don’t be a brand victim with a big logo slapped over your behind...

Swimwear That Matches Your Skin Tone If you have pale or creamy skin - any shade of green, deep blues and if you are daring pinks are great colors for you. Avoid yellow and orange.

If You Are Heavy-Set

A nice pair of swim trunks will be perfect for you - and if you have a daring soul try a squarecut suit as well. Don’t get the false notion that a big belly means a bigger suit, which will only emphasize your size. Go for dark uni-colors like black or blue and avoid popping colors.

If You Are Short

Boardshorts will drown you in fabric and make you look awkwardly underage - not good! Go for smaller suits like a swim brief or trunk that will fit your proportions.

If you have medium to dark skin have fun with colors. bright yellows, reds and white are great. Stay away from browns and beiges. If you have dark skin - wear bright colors but know that pastels look great against your skin tone. Orange and brown are not good and white can be challenging (but not always if the fit is perfect).

Mac pro Computer Instead of a big boring square box, the new Mac Pro is a shiny black cylinder that looks like it fell off the engine of a starship. It's actually a tall black cylinder, but much smaller than the tower it replaces, fitting into oneeighth the volume of the previous Mac Pro. Plus, it's twice as fast. Apple.com

Tyler Calkins, Editor-in-Chief

As science fiction moves closer to reality (flying cars, anyone?), we're taking a look at our favorite tech innovations of 2013. Check out these 55 souped-up (and stylish) gadgets designed to make your life easier and more fun:

FOR THE OFFICE AudiOffice by Invoxia Entirely unrelated to the fine German automobile maker, the brightly hued speaker dock has room for an iPad and an iPhone to cover standard mobile calls and video chats all answered by the sleek handset. Pairing by Bluetooth, non-iPhone owners can also make calls using four built-in speakers to take care of impromptu conference calls. The other great thing about the AudiOffice is that it also helps extend your cellphone range, ensuring your calls are never dropped and clear. invoxia.com $299

The TrekDesk Can't seem to find the time to go to the gym? You might wanna take a look at the TrekDesk. This is a treadmill that encourages everyone to walk slowly while doing normal office activities like talking to people, typing proposals, and catching up on emails. Talk about multitasking! Trekdesk.com $479

Aromatherapy USB Say ‘goodbye’ to the stale smell of your stink office and ‘hello’ to the fresh scent of aromatherapy essential oils. The AromaUSB is a USB fragrance dispenser that emits a pleasant aroma when plugged into a computer. The AromaUSB comes in different styles and colors (and can be custom printed) and of course, various perfumes. Need to feel relaxed? Opt for the “calming” fragrance, infused with lavender. Need some energy but you’ve already had 50 cups of coffee? The aromatic citrus scent with flowery notes is perfect for re-energizing. A single fragrance will last approximately 7 days and will scent up to 10 square feet of space. aromausb.com $20 40 : July 18, 2013

MetroNap Sleep Pod Immerse yourself in a futuristic dream-world. When Google noticed that their employees were getting tired on the job, they turned to these “energy pods” that feature a zero-gravity and ergonomic design. You'll be softly lulled to sleep by soothing sounds and put into a perfect position for a nap. So, the next time you're tired at your job – see if your boss will spring for one of these bad boys and let you sleep on the job! Metronaps.com $12,985

FOR THE PHONE LG Smart Mobile printer Like hand-writing letters and smoking tobacco from a pipe, printing photos is no longer the commonplace pastime it was. Even so, there’ll always be a need for physical images that you can pin to your wall and admire... or throw darts at, as you see fit. This pocket-sized printer connects to your phone via Bluetooth or NFC and uses “inkless” ZINC technology. This works by heating special paper containing color-forming molecules packed into layers that, once melted, form the image of that cute boy you picked up from the bar last night. LG.com $129.99

Tylt Vu Rapid Wireless Charger No, it’s not a designer shoe horn or a weird sex toy; it’s the Tylt Vu, and if you wanna wirelessly charge your smartphone using the Qi standard, it’s your next must-have accessory. Drop a handset into its 45-degree cradle and microscopic nanobots pass from the 5W charger directly into your battery and restore it back to health. tylt.com $50

Mobile Cinema i20 Projector So, how cool will you look at your next party or business presentation if you whip out this little bad boy? Watching movies or sideshows on our phones is tough because of the small screen, but the Mobile Cinema i20 solves this issue by projecting crystal clear images up to 50 massive inches. Smaller than a pack of chewing gum, the tiny yet powerful device comes equipped with a built in rechargeable battery that can also charge your iPhone battery. The device also works on iPads as well. Neiman Marcus $149.95 The UrbanEars Slussen Are you an aspiring DJ, but lack the funds to buy the super expensive equipment? We've got the solution: The UrbanEars Slussen. The Slussen adapter & app turns your iPhone into a complete DJ station. The threepronged adapter plugs into any iOS device, headphones, and speaker hookup. The accompanying app has scratch, cross-fader, and equalizer functions. Perfect for keeping the beats rockin' all night long. Urban Outfitters $15

Portable Wireless Speaker with NFC We all know the sound quality sucks on our phones – which is why we're stoked about the new Creative NFC wireless speaker system. Just tap your phone to the chocolate-bar shaped premium speaker and sit back and enjoy seven hours of orgasmic sound. It's even got a built-in microphone which lets you use the device as a stylish speakerphone. Tasty. Creative.com $149

Samsung Game Pad Want to turn your Galaxy S4 into a full gaming console? Try the Game Pad. Running on AA batteries, it connects via Bluetooth and offers Xbox-like gaming controls. Dual analogue sticks, shoulder triggers, a D-pad and four action buttons give you much improved control over all the increasingly sophisticated games Android has to offer. (Although, it's a bit too high-tech for some apps like Temple Run.) A clip holds the phone in place and will fit previous and future Galaxy devices running on Android 4.2 or higher. Samsung.com $112.99 Nooly App Ever feel like every time you try to look cute it starts raining? Now you don't have to worry about getting soaked (unless you're into that sort of thing). Nooly, the new location-based weather app generates forecasts localized within 0.4 miles of wherever you are. The software analyzes real-time radar and satellite data from NASA and NOAA to create hour-long predictions broken into fiveminute intervals. You'll never again have to worry about messing up your hair or that cute outfit you just bought! $Free FENUXE.COM : 41

Also available in Celebrity Tongue models... [k.d. Lang-feels like sandpaper]; [Ellen-feels like a Porsche but kinda tickles] (Available at www.lickalotapuss.com) 70 : July 18, 2013

Boo Butt ($15.99 pk/12) You know the drill, you meet Mr. Wonderful and things start to get hot and heavy. Inevitably, you want to get to that certain area but don’t know if the hermetic seal has been broken since his shower this morning. Well, with Boo Butt, you don’t have to guess anymore. Simply attach the micro test strip to your fingertip and “accidentally” touch said area. Boo Butt’s microprocessor analyses the area and wirelessly sends a text message to your iPhone. “You go girl!” or the dreaded (Boo Girl!! You gotta get out of there!!) (Available at boobutt. com) Love and lashes, MEP
