HIKE TO GEORGIA'S WATERFALLS D. David Kinney, Digital Editor WITH COOL WEATHER AROUND THE CORNER IT'S TIME TO GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE LAST FEW WEEKS OF OUTDOOR FUN. SO, WE'VE PICKED OUR FAVORITE HIKING TRAILS THAT LEAD TO SOME OF THE BEST WATERFALLS IN GEORGIA.

Cloudland Canyon Raven Cliffs Trail Anna Ruby Helen, Georgia Waterfalls Trail Falls Trail Located in the Chattahoochee Trenton, Georgia Traverse the gorge cut through the Cloudland Canyon State Park for one of the most rewarding hikes in Georgia. This isn’t an easy trail; however, it will lead you to two stunning Georgia waterfalls. First you’ll encounter Cherokee Falls 0.3 miles down the trail. The water from the Sitton Gulch Creek rushes over a ledge and crashes into a peaceful pool below. Keep walking and at the half mile mark you’ll encounter Hemlock Falls. The water spreads out a bit at Hemlock Falls before it cascades down into a shallow pool below. It’s a bit more difficult of a hike, but the natural features of the Cloudland Canyon can’t be missed. Difficulty Level: Distance To Waterfall: 0.3 miles to Cherokee Falls 0.5 miles to Hemlock Falls Total Distance: 1 mile

National Forest near the alpine village of Helen, GA this popular hiking trail leads you past babbling Dodd Creek to a stunning waterfall with three different drops. The first drop sends the unsuspecting water plummeting down 60 feet and the second drop sends the water down another 20 feet into a dark pool. Here the water collects until finally spilling out into Dodd Creek another 20 feet below. You can even take an adjoining trail all of the way into the city of Helen where you can see the German architecture of the homes in the alpine village. It’s a beautiful sight and a great hike. Difficulty Level: Distance To Waterfall: 2.5 miles Total Distance: 5.0 miles

Helen, Georgia Situated near Unicoi State Park the Anna Ruby Falls Trail is a great choice for novice hikers. The trail leads to the breathtaking Anna Ruby Falls named for the daughter of John H. Nichols, who previously owned the land and discovered the falls. The path leading to the waterfalls is paved and follows Smith Creek. Anna Ruby Falls’ rare double waterfall is the result of the York Creek and Curtis Creek meeting just behind the falls. Curtis Creek drops 153 feet, but York Creek only drops 50 feet. This is a great trail if you want to see the leaves change. Difficulty Level: Distance To Waterfall: 0.8 miles Total Distance: 1.6 miles

EATS

WHO DOESN’T LIKE A

MUSHROOM TIP? M. Duffy, Contributing Writer

Adventures in the outdoors will bring any city dweller into contact with an array of strange and exciting creatures. Some of the most memorable and colorful oddities belong to a special class, a 5th kingdom, that of mushrooms or fungi. These unique specimens grow in all manner of shapes and sizes from creeping to clinging to colonies of beautiful toadstools like something out of a fairy tale. While most people have an innate fear, having been told from an early age to be wary of mushrooms, there’s a whole world of harmless varietals which can add a new level to anyone’s culinary arsenal. Steven Bell, the proud owner of Atlanta’s own 5th Kingdom mushroom growers, began his foray into the world of fungus when necessity indicated a career change. So he drew upon his lifelong commitment to a sustainable environment, coupled that with his experience farming in locales like Costa Rica and St. Croix, and brought his own fascination with the world of mycology into the equation. With some careful study, some strategic urban planning and a short period of financial stress, he was soon able to launch a mushroom production venture. This burgeoning entrepreneur found his niche market where demand for quality was high and today business is booming.

20 : September 12, 2013

Most people can only claim to have tried one or two varieties of mushrooms in their lifetime. Memories of spongy texture and a flavor like... No, actually, it’s just the texture most people remember. But according to Steven Bell, there is so much more to the world of this largely unexplored food group. The textures can be light and ethereal to dense and meaty, and the flavors can range from sweet and nutty to robust and savory. Take Steven’s favorite, the King Oyster mushroom for instance. “If you’re a meat eater and you eat that, you would not feel like you’ve been cheated at all,” he says. “It’s beefy; so succulent, so tender.” Fortunately, 5th Kingdom can supply a whole range of odds and ends to tantalize even the most refined taste buds. As a weekly fixture at most area farmers markets, 5th Kingdom can provide goodies like Lion’s Mane, Silver, Gold and Pink Oyster, Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms. Wild harvested types include Puff Balls, Chanterelles, and even Old Man of the Woods. But why stop there? As Bell explains, he’s always working to develop new varieties to bring to market. Steven says his location and the size of his operation is what makes his product

stand out from the rest. “Because it’s our sole focus, we’re able to give the attention needed so we have a consistent product,” he remarks. He also points out he can do what national suppliers have no chance at doing. “We’re in the middle of town,” he points out. “If a chef needs something in a pinch, we generally can get them what they need.” Bell says this quick turnaround and commitment to quality makes his mushrooms a superior product. Educating the public is also an important part of the job for the people at 5th Kingdom. “We’re working against a phobia,” Bell explains. “We have an ingrained culture that says don’t eat mushrooms.” To combat this indoctrination, Steven works hard to make sure his employees are highly knowledgeable about the oddities they sell. Additionally, they offer “do-it-yourself” mushroom bags anyone can use to produce round after round of fresh mushrooms in their own home. “It’s actually not something we make a lot of profit on because the value of the mushrooms is greater than what we sell the kits for,” admits Bell. He says they provide the bags because the learning experience is so valuable for the customer. “And it doesn’t get any fresher than breaking the mushroom off and putting it right into the pan,” he adds. To top it off, Bell personally leads “myco-adventures” into nearby nature preserves so locals can learn for themselves how to identify and forage for their own mushrooms. Anyone interested in one of these events or more information in general can go to the 5th Kingdom website: 5thkingdom.com.

Steven's 5th Kingdom Favorites

King Oyster

tastes beefy, like eating meat. Succulent and tender, perfectly satisfying even for a hardcore meat eater.

Lion's Mane

tastes like lobster or shellfish. Deeply delicious, pairs well with creamy sauces or great in tacos with cilantro and lime.

Pink Oyster

tastes like bacon. Fully flavored, can be fried crispy and disguised as bacon in a dish. Steven Bell

Every month WNG members travel to fantastic locations both local and remote in search of outdoor adventure. According to WNG’s secretary Jason Lye, “We get together and go on trips, make great friends, and have a lot of fun. Most trips are within driving distance, but we’ve had a few international ones on the calendar.” Pick an outdoor activity and it’s likely a WNG member is passionate about it and planning a trip to do it. WNG’s members (over 250 in number) happily share their knowledge and expertise about the outdoors when they’re planning trips. Lye, for example, recently became a certified scuba diver and he’s planning a trip to the Florida Everglades to see the manatees in January of next year. To ensure every adventure goes smoothly and is well planned WNG has a trip coordinator that helps members with organization and travel plans. This also helps ensure that every WNG member is properly prepared for the outing whether you’re an outdoor pro or a woodland novice. “One of my favorite trips was when we went caving. I’d never done that before and didn’t know anything about it. But other members were passionate about it and helped everyone from start to finish. It

28 : September 12, 2013

was reassuring to have members there who do this all of the time. We needed backup flashlights and things that I wouldn’t have even known to buy,” Lye said. And Lye isn’t talking about a trip to Ruby Falls and taking the elevator to the bottom. On Lye’s spelunking adventure the group scooted, crawled, and squeezed through over a mile of caves. “You could easily get lost down there if you didn’t know what you’re doing,” Lye pointed out. One particularly interesting aspect of spelunking that Lye wasn’t aware of before his first trip was just how fragile cave systems are. “A bunch of guys going down into the caves and urinating could hurt the environment down there,” Lye explained. So the group purchased containers to store and carry their waste while they were underground so they wouldn’t damage the caves they were exploring. Sound intense? It was. But Lye loved every minute of it and it’s the ability to have this type of new experience that makes WNG so popular. WNG’s members range from young to old with varying athletic abilities, so the group plans various trips and activities that everyone can enjoy. “Our group is really diverse. We’ve still got members who were

Joining WNG and selecting an outdoor adventure is really easy. Become a member on their MeetUp webpage and then pick an trip from their calendar. Membership is restricted to gay and bisexual men age 18 and older. annual membership dues are $20. here when the group first started, before it was called WNG,” Lye said. If a less intense pace is more your style you could try WNG’s trip on September 20th to Sapelo Island where they’re going “car camping.” Or you could go sailing at Lake Lanier that very same day on a different trip. “The diversity of WNG trips are great and even include service trips to help reduce invasive species ingress or repair bridges and trails,” Lye said. Not only is WNG a unique way to get outdoors, but it’s an incredible opportunity to make new friends. Like many other

WNG members, Lye isn’t originally from Atlanta. Lye was born in the United Kingdom and traveled across the pond to work on his doctorate in North Carolina. After graduating, he moved to Atlanta for a job and joined WNG to explore his new home and meet new people. Little did Lye know at the time that one of the people he would meet through WNG would be his future partner. It wasn’t always this easy to find a gayfriendly outdoor recreational group here in Georgia. When WNG was formed in 1992 there was no website or online calendar to browse. Interested outdoorsmen had to read about the group in local media or hear about it from a member to learn about the group

and get involved. In the 90’s members had to sign up for a newsletter that was mailed out each month. “Volunteers printed addresses, licked envelopes, and stuck stamps to mail out the newsletter to the membership so that they could contact various trip organizers and participate in trips,” Lye said. But don’t worry, “These days, of course, it's all electronic,” he added, “WNG uses social media to help organize our trips, which has made it much more accessible, increased the number of trips for the members, and at the same time reduced the administrative burden on the club volunteers.” The group was originally called the Atlanta Outdoor Sports Fellowship and was created out of interest. Their first newsletter explained, “More than fifty men have answered our ad in Creative Loafing and expressed interest in doing outdoor sports, and word-of-mouth is beginning to get the news out about the fun we are having.” But the name Atlanta Outdoor Sports Fellowship (AOSF) wasn’t very popular with the early group members. “We had to call ourselves something in this newsletter, so we picked AOSF. But we’re still open to suggestions,” the newsletter remarked. The

FENUXE.COM : 29

group wrestled with the name for a while; however, as we already know they eventually selected the Wilderness Network of Georgia. What did stand the test of time was the group’s purpose. From the very beginning the group’s founders knew that Atlanta’s gay community wanted an outlet to explore “...a wide variety of outdoor activities including: day hiking, backpacking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, caving, boating, mountain biking, and horseback riding, all of which are readily available in our area.” Additionally, the group’s values have remained strong. As the first newsletter points out, it was important that the group foster a sense of inclusion welcoming young and old, outdoor pros and newbies alike. “We’ve also got several folks in each activity with enough experience to help those who want to try a new activity, so beginners are more than welcome,” WNG’s first newsletter stated. Not only did the group work to incorporate beginners, but the original members were also keenly aware of varying physical abilities and worked to include everyone. “In addition to the more athletic activities, members seem to be equally interested in pursuits that focus on the natural beauty and peace of the outdoors, such as observing birds and wildlife, wildflower identification, and scenic experiences.” So what are you waiting for? Visit WNG’s webpage on MeetUp.com and get out there! Georgia has a treasure trove of beautiful natural resources, unique geographical features, interesting wildlife, and we all know how sexy outdoorsmen are. So pick an outdoor adventure you’ve always wanted to try and I bet WNG already has a trip planned for it. The group would love to have you join and you’ll have a fantastic time.

FITNESS

TIpS FOR ROCk

HaRD aBS (With Ab No Crunches In Sight!) Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

Whether you want a perfect six-pack or just want a healthy and stable core, you can’t ignore your abs. Beyond keeping your intestines in place, your abdominal muscles also help you balance and support your back leaving you with a better posture. Sure you can do tons of old school ab crunches, but why not shake things up with more effective exercises that will lead to better results? Here are a our seven tips that will help you get stronger and better looking abs. BRACE No matter which ab exercise you do, it is always a good idea to brace your ab muscles. Pretend that your belly button actually has a little button on the back that you want to snap onto the spine - that’s how you brace your abs. We’re not talking about holding your breath (seriously, keep breathing normally), we’re talking about actually activating your entire core.

1

BASE JUMP The base jump is a very simple and effective way to train your abs while also building stronger legs. Start out standing on the floor and then jump onto an elevated surface. Even though it seems like your legs are doing most of the work, your motion activates just about every ab muscle you’ve got to lift your body onto the elevated surface. Do three sets of 12-15 jumps.

2

STATICS Effective ab exercises don’t require a lot of action. In fact, one of the most effective exercises requires very little movement. Start out in a plank position (on your elbows and toes) and hold your body up with your abs. This static exercise activates your entire core. Hold position for 20+ seconds and repeat 3 - 4 times.

JACKKNIFE 4 This exercise combines static exercise with movement and balance. Start out in a plank position with your feet resting on top of a gym ball. Next, roll the ball forward by bringing your knees as close to your chest as possible. Remember to keep your back straight. Finally, roll back into plank position. (This is a tough one!) Do three sets of 10-12 full movements. 36 : September 12, 2013

CHOOSE SIDES Don’t forget about your side abs (obliques) because they’re an equally important part of your core. It’s true that some front ab exercises will work your obliques; however, a good side plank here and there will do wonders. Hold position for 20+ seconds and repeat 3 - 4 times.

5

CARDIO Getting a six-pack isn’t just about ab exercises. Belly fat can still hide toned abs. Did you know cardio not only burns fat, but it also works your abs at the same time?. Your abs work as stabilizers and cardio keeps them pretty busy. Do 30+ minutes of cardio everyday.

6

AND STREEEETCH… Sore muscles are an unavoidable byproduct of building muscle, but you can easily keep it in check. Everyone knows that basic stretching can prevent or reduce muscle soreness, but how do you stretch your abs? Start out lying flat on your stomach. Now inhale and raise your upper body using your arms while bending your back upward. You should feel the stretch in your abdomen, but be careful not to over do it.

9.6.2013 - 10.6.2013 HARMONY ALLIANCE THEATRE

Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman have teamed up to tell the story of “the first sensational boy band” in a spectacular new musical “Harmony.” The Comedian Harmonists formed in 1920’s Germany and the world quickly fell in love with their signature harmonies and on-stage comedy antics. Don’t miss this great new show premiering right here in Atlanta at the Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff.

9.14.2013

BEAR BASH ATLANTA EAGLE

Katy Perry is going to hear Atlanta “Roar” when The Southern Bears arrive at the Atlanta Eagle for Bear Bash. DJ Barry Huffine, known for spinning at great bear events up and down the East Coast, will be spinning all night. The Atlanta Eagle won “Best Bar For Bears” and “Best Bar To Sport Your Leather Gear” this year in the FENUXE 2013 Best of Atlanta. atlantaeagle.com

9.4.2013 - 10.6.2013 VENUS IN FUR ACTOR’S EXPRESS

Playwright David Ives is back with an incredibly hot new comedy that radiates sex and appeals to your kinky side. The story centers around Vanda, a young actress who is desperate to land the lead in an upcoming play. Needless to say, her audition makes an impression on the director and things get steamy as sex and power battle it out on stage. 9.6.2013 - 9.29.2013 TROILUS AND CRESSIDA THE NEW AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE TAVERN

Shakespeare thrusts us into the seventh year of the Trojan War telling us of the battles over Helen of Troy as only he could. With a heavy dose of satire and piercing tragicomedy, that’s as relatable now as it was when it was first written, this is a great show to see at The New American Shakespeare Tavern. Enjoy Shakespeare as it was meant to be viewed with some wine or beer and a delicious meal.

COMMUNITYPICKS 9.13.2013 PAPARAZZI - VIRGO BIRTHDAY EDITION 10TH & PIEDMONT

DJ MERR1N and Barry Brandon are joining other Virgos for a special version of Paparazzi this month. The party starts at 10 p.m. and DJ MERR!N himself will be spinning. If you’re driving into Midtown don’t forget to take advantage of the complimentary valet. Groups of six or more can call 10th & Piedmont (who recently won “Best New Restaurant” and “Best Place To See & Be See” in the FENUXE 2013 Best of Atlanta) in advance to reserve one of the three Celebration Lounges for a unique experience. communitashospitality.com/10th-and-piedmont

HOROSCOPES : 9/12 - 9/25

by Naja Elieva, Your friendly, fabulously costumed, neighborhood Fortune Teller

FENUXE

virgo [aUg. 23 – SEpT. 22]

Times are a changin’. You feel the seismic shift, you feel “the Earth, move, under your feet.” Don’t dilly-dally, don’t dither, rather gather your skirts, your harvest, your followers, your finds, and prepare to shift to that spot where you place your motherlode. Ohhhh, watch your step on the 3rd, pu-leeze!

libra [SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22] WOW-are you really up to adhering to the the laws you are creating in the your own private Idaho? Are you sure you’re not having double vision, and most importantly, are you taking notes? Prepare to be an arbiter of justice. Dole out some good on the 7th. Do it with humility.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Hold on hon’, grab your partner and dosie-doe. When it’s finally your turn, kick it up a notch. That’s not saying that the vigorous formalities that rule the game are no longer in effect—but it’s saying that it is worth your effort to pay attention to what you are being told to do—for a change. Kick back on the 2nd.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21]

after dark

Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JaN. 19]

Decidedly within the whirlwind you have created, chin held achingly and defiantly against the current and the maelstrom, you forge on. There is a way to sweeten things, to understand the joy of resistance, of growth, and not to tether yourself to conclusions which may be, quite frankly, utterly wrong, dearie. The 4th proves to be a majestic, game changer of a moment.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18] Don’t rush. On the 6th you will find yourself rolling in time, awash with a positive cash flow. Be frivolous! Be gay! Continue to explore—the ball is in your court. Play for time, others patience will wear thin before your indomitable energy ebbs. Those in the know will have to grant you your carefully crafted plans, or risk alienating you and your posse.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – maR. 20] After having had bit of a hiatus, you rebound, refreshed, recharged, and ready to be reunited with that which love most dearly. Don’t let yourself be led astray—you most definitely know at least as much as those in whom you would confide. From the 7th through the 9th--read my lips—frivolous is good.

You have been holding yourself back, preening, and prepping just the right vernacular. Let loose, dive in, feel the majestic ripple of your muscles beneath you as you gather yourself together in perfect form and float across the finish line. You are ready to be celebrated; time to graciously accept your laurels—you have earned them. The kudos come your way the 13th through the 15th. Say thank you.

56 : September 12, 2013

ARIES [maR. 21 – apR. 19] Can you just cease and Ddesist for one second? People aren’t quick to trust a repeat offender, as much as they WANT to trust you. Don’t begrudge others their turn at the wheel. Practice playing nice, it renders you gracious (and provides a perfect foil for your petulant bellicosity). Let ‘er rip on the 3rd....

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUl. 22]

Taurus [apR. 20 – may 20] After the rain, all is cleansed, a tabula rasa. New beginnings. Keep your eyes down, allow your humble earnestness to show. It is not a pretext, but a way to let others who are more self-effacing and restrained discover the face of your presence, and to be in on the fun, as well. The 11th warrants wisdom and leads toward wish fulfillment.

GemIni [may 21 – JUN. 22] Can do. Can do. Just repeat. There are too many flimsy excuses offering themselves on a pedestal (or two) at present. Just keep your gaze focused on where you want to be, NOT on who you want to be there with you. Sultry gaze on the 9th, or not, you just need to walk on by.

People are kinda droolin’ at the fab confections you’re creating. Layer upon layer of creamy, fluffy, yet simultaneously hearty, savory delight with a structure of steel scaffolding and balsa wood for a léger and stately effect. This is the moment to loosen yourself and lose yourself—the great palaces and structures which you have painstakingly de developed are beginning to be populated. The 8th-one never knows who one will bump into....

LEO [JUl. 23 – aUg. 22] Measured stride, no tilt, no wobble, slender muscular neck, arched high, nostrils flared—all the better to whiff with, my dear. A time of restless pursuit and carving out new kingdoms is upon you. Use it wisely, stake out your territory, and do not pander to anyone. Lift your gaze in wonder on the 13th.

Holler Poodles!! When the wilderness calls, it is important to have the tools we need to get the job done. Here is your quarterly report on new technology for the wilderness. When you reach your campsite, it is critical to establish a safe zone to protect your party from wild animals, insects, and snakes. With the You Go Girl Perimeter Alarm, ($29.95) a constant stream of sibilant sssssssss’s backed by an “Unch! Unch! Unch!” dance beat are guaranteed to keep you safe from wildlife predators. [Warning: Scientific studies have concluded some heterosexual men with a propensity for politics are attracted to this sound] Buyer beware. Available at bravotv.com and watchwhathappenslive.com As you start to set up your campsite in the wilds of Jonesboro, the novice gay man may face challenges unfamiliar to him—setting up his tent, getting wood, making a campfire, and connecting speakers to the sound system. Don’t fret poodles! With “Ask A Lesbian” ($69.69/year) you get 24 hour technical support for any of your How-To, Fix-It problems. With a guaranteed no-holds-barred, authoritative tone, your lesbian will be sure you get that shit done right the first time!! Damnit!! With the natural tendency for the gay camper to want to fit in, Ronco has developed its latest line of accessories for gay men and lesbians. No longer must the smooth, trimmed-within-an-inch-of-your-life gaybie feel uncomfortable in naturistic surroundings. With Pop on Pubes, ($24.99) the well-groomed, manscaped urbanite can easily disguise themselves with a ‘70s inspired bush in the bush. Available at bushforbush.com and ronco.com For all males over the age of 21 who identify themselves as boi, official certification of that designation has been provided by the outreach unit of the Boi Scouts of Amerika. Primarily for gay men, this designation allows a man 50 years old to officially be called boi without fear of judgement. Boi Certification, ($25.00) is recognized throughout the United States in areas densely populated with leather clad individuals. Available at boiscoutsofamerika.com and poncedeleonboibuffet.com 58 : September 12, 2013
