kIEhL'S Kiehl's doesn't boast about it, but the 160 year-old company has an underlying philanthropic nerve. Is Your TV Becoming More

GAY? Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion & Grooming Director Photos: PR

Television is gaining ground over feature films as the media outlet where LGBT characters are best represented. FENUXE spoke to out gay actor Joe Komara about his work in television, the token gay guy, and the new (gay) power of TV. 24 : November 7, 2013

Y

ou may know actor Joe Komara as the smooth bartender from "The Girl's Guide to Depravity," the Cinemax show hailed as the modern day "Sex and The City." He plays Tyler the bartender who gets to listen, laugh, and say "I told you so" to the group of girls that make up the main cast. In the new season of the show airing right now, Komara's character is becoming more of a mainstay role and we're learning even more about Tyler. For instance, he's Canadian, he got a boyfriend, is dyslexic, and even has Green Card issues.

The Cinemax show is the culmination of a bustling career for Komara, which started in musical theatre on and Off-Broadway. His work on stage ultimately led him to L.A. where he's also currently working in the Follies singing and dancing – and of course as a regular character on "The Girl's Guide to Depravity." “I feel so lucky that I'm a working actor," Komara explains on the coast to coast cell phone connection, “I'm working and performing and even though it's not always easy – it's never easy – I've made that choice and I'm sticking with it. I know I'm going to be fine!”

“I'd like to see a different way of seeing gay instead of 'here's my best friend who's gay' – you know, the 'token' gay guy in a show." who just happens to be gay. So it's not so much about the sexuality, but just about the character”.

Of course, landing a part on a hot new TV show has something to do with his professional confidence, but it also makes him think about what the future could possibly hold: “When something like that happens it's like hopes and dreams start flowing left and right. You can't help but hope that it will have a really big impact on your career.” And given the rise of gay characters over the past few years in film and especially TV, the future is definitely looking brighter for an out gay actor like Joe Komara. But, as with any change, it comes with challenges – or to yet again paraphrase the words of Joe; it's never easy. Just a few short years ago things would have been even harder. A gay man playing a gay character used to be somewhat of a novelty.

But change is coming-especially to television. “It's exciting that there are so many TV shows and networks that are increasing the amount of gay characters”, Joe says about the obvious fact that gay characters are indeed becoming almost a staple in the majority of major TV shows. “A show like "The New Normal" has really been instrumental in showing a different side of being gay. I think it's really important because in the past you had generalizations of gay characters”, Joe Komara says about the fact that gay characters in movies and TV tend to be portrayed in a certain way, “I'd like to see a different way of seeing gay. Instead of 'here's my best friend who's gay' – you know, the 'token' gay guy in a show. It would be great to see just another character in a group of friends

Komara is on to something when he suggests that gay characters tend to follow a certain 'token gay' norm. The trend has also been noted by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, ed.) which surveys the entertainment industry (among other industries) to call out discrimination, but also highlights positive changes for our community. “The most persistent issue that needs addressing in terms of how LGBT people are represented on television has definitely been a lack of diversity in those representations”, GLAAD Associate Director of Entertainment Media, Matt Kane, notes, and continues, “Not only are LGBT people not all the same gender or race, but our community is also made up of every age, religious affiliation, and socio-economic background.” So in other words, gays have become more present in entertainment media, but are still subject to the stereotype that being gay means that your are male, white, and of a certain socioeconomic status... FENUXE.COM : 25

But change is evident and these stereotypes are slowly but surely becoming less pronounced. A good example is the aforementioned "The New Normal" and "Modern Family," but also this summer's "Under The Dome" on CBS which featured an interracial lesbian couple with a teenage daughter. Or how about "GLEE," which not only has gay and lesbian characters, but also a transgendered teen cast member?

interpretation, but as Komara says: “I don't think America is ready for an out gay actor to play the (heterosexual) male lead. Or rather, I don't think Hollywood is allowing America to be ready for it," Komara says and adds, “It's all about creating that certain image, which really should have nothing to do with sexuality. But it still does, so I don't think it's there yet.”

So why is TV leading the change instead of Hollywood's feature films? Joe Komara sees the issue two-fold: “Hollywood holds on to generalizations, because it is important to have characters that people can relate to quickly," he explains, “It's about selling an image and selling tickets, and Hollywood is not ready – or maybe too lazy – to sell that image differently."

Which in turn raises the question of whether or not being an openly gay actor would exclude Komara from getting certain parts. “Where I'm at in the industry, it's more like 'whatever' and you do the audition – people are not interested in my personal life. So I don't think being openly gay has anything to do with it – for me at least," Komara says.

The other side of the issue is that there is simply much more TV being produced now, and much less original film. “The best writing and character work is happening in TV right now. There is so much of it! Every network has a ton of shows, and then there is Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube creating original content for streaming – and they're really good! It's an exciting time for television," Joe concludes.

Another indicator that TV is gaining ground over film is the fact that movie stars are quickly turning to TV. “Movie stars are returning to TV to play big characters like "American Horror Story" with Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Jessica Lange. Some of our biggest stars are on TV now”, Komara says.

Matt Kane from GLAAD seconds that notion saying: “LGBT representation has advanced tremendously in the last 10 years or so, though we're only beginning to collect data in a comparable way for mainstream film. But we've found they appear far more infrequently there," Kane notes and adds: “The Hollywood film industry has a lot of catching up to do when compared to television and independent cinema.” This fact was highlighted during the recent search for the male romantic lead for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film series where out gay actor Matt Bomer was a favorite among fans, but wasn't chosen by the studio to play the sexual demi-god Christain Grey. Whether or not it was because his homosexuality is of course entirely up to individual

Either way the future of LGBT characters in entertainment media seems painted in hopeful hues of the rainbow – especially when it comes to television. For Komara, TV is also his medium of choice: “I love doing movies, but TV is what I love and really relate to. I would love to be in a place like Sean Hayes who has his own show ("Sean Hayes Saves The World"). Sitcoms are really super fast and super funny, and it would be so much freer and you could bring so much more of yourself to your character.” With the way change is happening in television right now, chances are that Joe Komara, and many other out gay actors like himself, will continue to become a bigger and bigger part of the entertainment industry through well-written and diverse LGBT characters. So stay tuned!

Leslie

Jordan

D. David Kinney, Digital Editor

to do an appearance and that’s really difficult with that eleven hour flight. But you’ll get no sympathy. I called my friend up last summer and I said, ‘Oh, I’m just exhausted. I had to go to Brazil and do a gay cruise, then I went to New York, and now I've got to go up to San Luis Obispo.’ He said ‘f*** you’ and hung up the phone. I called him back and I asked, ‘Why did you hang up on me?’ He said, ‘I can’t even get a job here in LA and you’re complaining about all this,” Jordan laughed. Jordan is quick to joke about this hectic schedule, but it’s the life he’s always wanted. “I can remember sitting in Chattanooga, Tennessee just knowing that I was bound for bigger and better things. Even as a kid. The only time I would ever get out of Tennessee was when we would go to Panama City, Florida when I was real little. Then as I got older we swapped over to Daytona Beach. I would get in the back of the station wagon and stare out the window as we left Dayton to come home and just cry. I didn't want to go back. I just knew there was a bigger world out there,” Jordan remembered.

Leslie Jordan and Del Shores are teaming up for a special night of comedy called “A Sordid Soiree” benefiting AID Atlanta at the 14th Street Playhouse. Jordan is no stranger to Atlanta and has a large gay following here. Whether you've seen him in “Southern Baptist Sissies,” which was part of this year’s Out On Film and won “Best Men’s Feature,” or his recurring guest roles on TV shows like “Will & Grace,” you’re probably already familiar with the hilarious comedian and storyteller extraordinaire. FENUXE caught up with Jordan to get a sneak peek at what to expect from the show later this month. “Both of us on stage? We don’t do this very often. I don’t think we've ever done it. It’s pretty historic,” Jordan said, “You shouldn't miss it.” So, why are Jordan and Shores getting together? “I was in New Orleans doing ‘American Horror Story’ and the head of AID Atlanta came and took me to dinner and sold me on it,” he explained. Jordan is a busy entertainer, but the timing of AID Atlanta’s event allowed everything to work out perfectly. “I do about forty-four venues a year and I get so many requests, 34 : November 7, 2013

but it worked out beautifully because that’s the week before Thanksgiving and it’s kind of like a free trip home—to be a little selfish,” Jordan quipped, “I’m from Chattanooga and I’m going to go home and spend three days. Then my twin sisters, who are two years younger than me, and I are flying to Miami and getting on a cruise.” It may sound like the perfect time for a fun beach getaway, but Jordan is going on the cruise to work. “It sounds like a lot of fun and I’m sure it will be, but it’s exhausting at my age. I’m sort of traveled out right now,” Jordan joked, “I just got back from London

Did Jordan expect to be famous one day? You bet he did! And he worked for years to get where he is. “My success has not really surprised me because it’s not like I was some overnight success. I've worked really, really hard. I watch TV and there are all these new reality shows now and kids just want to be famous, you know? They just want to go to the clubs, show off, and be famous. They have no idea what it really entails—the hard work,” Jordan pointed out. Luckily, hard work isn't something that Jordan is afraid of in life. “When I was in New Orleans about a month ago we were doing fourteen hour days because on ‘American Horror Story’ FX only gives them eight days to shoot each episode. And each episode is like a feature film,” Jordan said. You may hear grumbling from other actors about long days on the set, but Jordan lives for the opportunity to entertain. This became obvious as he explained more about working on “American Horror Story.” He couldn't hide the pure excitement in his voice as he recounted stories from the set. “It’s pretty amazing with Jessica Lange and my favorite new actress whose name is Frances Conroy. She was the mother on ‘Six Feet Under’ and I’m telling you the three of us shot a scene that took almost fourteen hours,” Jordan gleefully detailed. That’s fourteen hours after the screenwriters whittled it down. “It was nine pages of dialogue and Ms. Lange came in, she’s so

smart and she’s done it for so long, and she said: ‘Guys this is nine pages of dialogue that you could get down to four. I’m just not going to memorize all of this. I’m sorry. It’s just not necessary.’ Sure enough we came back after lunch and it was down to four pages of dialogue. But even with that, you put Frances Conroy and Jessica Lange… boy I had to step up to the plate. I was just ducking Emmys. Emmys were just flying everywhere,” Jordan chuckled. Jordan is obviously thrilled to be working on great shows like “American Horror Story,” but he has his sights set on landing the gig that’s always eluded him. “What I really, really want is a steady gig. I’m so envious of all of the kids on ‘American Horror Story’ that work every week. I was guaranteed three [episodes] with a possibility of four and I’ve been doing that for years. That’s even how it was on ‘Will & Grace.’ I never made a salary. It was always at my availability and they would just call me. Any time my manager would say, “Well, why don’t you guarantee him seven out of thirteen?’ they would say, ‘No, no, we’re paying the kids way too much. We can’t afford all that. We’ll just use him at his availability.’ And that’s when you don’t make a lot of money,” Jordan said in a somber tone. Jordan’s been very close to getting a steady gig in Hollywood, but the rug always gets pulled out from under him at the last minute. “I had a pilot this year that was written for me. CBS brought over Rupert Grint, the red-haired kid from ‘Harry Potter,’ and all of the sudden they didn't think I was a good fit. I didn't even get in my own pilot that was written for me. I kind of thought that I was just going to give up on TV. I’d had it,” Jordan said in a soft voice. But Jordan has been knocked down before and he always finds a way to keep fighting. “Then I got this great gig with ‘American Horror Story’ so you just keep plugging. But I really wish I could get a steady gig. I have not had a steady job since 1992. That was my last series regular role twenty-one years ago,” Jordan said. Helping Jordan fight his way higher in the entertainment industry is his unique background which includes his time living in Atlanta. “I was kind of the black sheep in my family--the little gay boy who ran off to Atlanta. I've been arrested five times and I've been sober for seventeen years. There were some rough years there,” Jordan explained. By turning his life around he found the strength to turn his career around as well. “A year after winning my Emmy I called my agent and said, “Honey, I can’t eat this Emmy.” I thought that when you won an Emmy everything was set from there on out. But it didn't happen for me. It just didn't happen. So I had to reinvent myself. I called a friend of mine who does marketing—big marketing like ‘Harry Potter’ openings—and I said, ‘Bitch, market me!’ And that’s how all of this travelling stated. I do stand up comedy and I’m listed with some speaking agencies where i go into a company and give a talk at breakfast about diversity in the workplace. It’s all the same act! You know what I mean? I fell out of the womb, landed in my mother’s high heels, and honey here I am gay, la la la. It’s all the same, we just give it different names,” Jordan explained. Despite the bright lights and fans, Jordan still loves Atlanta. “When you go out in LA or West Hollywood everyone has an agenda. Everybody is an actor. Everybody is looking for a break. Everybody wants to hand you a script. If you go to Atlanta and go to Blake’s it’s just boys in flip-flops and shorts and they’re just out to have a good time. I love that about Atlanta. The gay community is so unlike the gay community here where I am,” Jordan said. You can see Leslie Jordan and Del Shores live at the 14th Street Playhouse on November 23rd at 7 p.m. For tickets and additional information visit 14thstplayhouse.org.

No other color has been so perpetually color-coded toward men as blue. So it may come as no surprise that blue hues are influencing this fall's menswear, but this season blue has been elevated as the go-to color for fall and winter. This is great news for guys because it's an easy color to pull off and chances are you already own a lot of great blue clothing. If you want to introduce more blue to your wardrobe, go for deeper and darker blues and wear them monochromatically with different shades of blue from head to toe.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

You are genuinely one of the most generous people on the planet. Let them see your your kindness, people will not think anything less of you for it. It is that self-same vulnerability that feeds your passions and cravings for more. Give more, the returns are incalculable. Positive Impact is a great match for your Spirit right now. The 20th is a very evocative time for you. Mind your p’s and q’s!

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21]

You are a great provider, and have a sense of largesse. Use your indomitable will and your organizational skills to secretly help those who never dare speak up, the ones you understand so very well. Project Open Hand could make good use your brilliant skills. Your time, talent, and generosity will be acknowledged by one in-the-know on the 16th. Don’t be shy. Hrrrmppphhh!

Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JaN. 19] Soften your heart. It is not that you are hardened, it is that you have so much empathy, power , and deep, endless love, that your heart is about to burst and you hold it in check, to avoid drenching others. Do for Joining Hearts what you can. Kindness is contagious. Set the world on fire. Try to rest the day before though, on the 15th.

AQUARIUS [JaN. 20 – FEB. 18]

It is time for you, of all people, to speak out. Surmount your desire to work incognito, you must come forward now and teach people how to give. Out and Equal. The 15th is a day of repose. Down, girl!

PISCES [FEB. 19 – maR. 20] You have a bleeding heart, you are soft and kind and give money to squeegee guys, without even checking what they do with it. This is a good time to express your gratitude, to open your eyes and heart to the gifts others wish to give you. If receiving makes you uncomfortable, give it on up, give it away, but give it! A donation to MISTER (mistercenter.org) is a great way to start. The 22nd will find you eyeballing someone who is best left to their own ‘devices.’ Ahem.

ARIES [maR. 21 – aPR. 19]

You are not the kind of person to avert your gaze. Ever. You are the one that is there, through thick and thin. Aid Alanta needs your help. Make a change in your schedule, your spending habits--whatever. The good you will do will come back to delight you. You develop an enticingly awkward way with words on the 8th. Coy? You? You betcha!

Taurus [aPR. 20 – may 20] A lover. Yes, a lover of all things, fine, fun, woolly warm, and soft, the place to fill someone else’s cup is Pets are Loving Support. Do you have any idea of how many people have been DISCOVERED while out walking their dogs? The 17th is a day for peeking behind curtains, a day of surprises.

GemIni [may 21 – JUN. 22] You DEFINITELY need a new diversion, a pastime, a place to put your soaring energy. Give back to AEN, there is so much they have done for you. Besides, can you imagine a world without Speed Networking by, for, and with Family? On the 14th, hon’, stop staring and if you don’t shut your mouth, you’re gonna’ catch you some flies.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Go on, Cancer, admit it, ‘fess up-you ADORE your Chamber. Remember when there was a time that people couldn’t ask the receptionist where the Gay Chamber meeting was being held? Go to the Business Builder luncheons, the Wow Wednesdays, Fourth Fridays, advertise, donate, and support your Chamber. They support you, and you are it. Besides, when you finally decide to get serious, the stars will shine bright on you. The 9th will be an eyeopener, honey, hold tight.

LEO [JUL. 23 – aUG. 22] For the Kid in all of us. Another opportunity for you to do do good by just being yourself, your most generous, outrageous self. People watch you, note what you do, and emulate you. Lead them on. Goad them. Avoid messy conflict on the 17th by either being virtuous, or very discreet.

virgo [aUG. 23 – SEPT. 22] The days of solely ‘looking out for moi’ are no longer quite as enthralling If, by chance, you find yourself searching for a raison d’etre, a cause, Jerusalem House is it. Touchy, touchy on the 18th, hold your breath and count to 15,000. Remember, she doesn’t have a single thing on you!

libra

[SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] Pride is your Baby, ATLANTA Pride! Dress it up, deck it out, let it shine. Sometimes moolah is better than elbow grease. On the 15-17th, parlay your gains into a long-term endowment. Know that even in your moments of perceived lacks, there is an entire team routing for you.
