Matthew McConaughey Tackles AIDS Stigma In 1981 doctors didn’t know what was happening to gay men in America. In June of that year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) first reported finding rare infections in five gay men from Los Angeles. The men were all suffering from an uncommon lung infection called Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and other rare infections. Before the CDC could publish its findings two of the men had already died. The CDC had no idea that it was reporting the start of the AIDS epidemic. News outlets on the West Coast picked up the story that same day and “within days doctors from across the U.S. flood[ed the] CDC with reports of similar cases,” AIDS.gov details. The CDC quickly began receiving reports of other gay men with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, opportunistic infections, and a rare form of cancer called Kaposi’s Sarcoma.

In less than a month the New York Times wrote an article called “Rare Cancer Seen In 41 Homosexuals” that read: “Doctors in New York and California have diagnosed among homosexual men 41 cases of a rare and often rapidly fatal form of cancer. Eight of the victims died less than twenty-four months after the diagnosis was made. The cause of the outbreak is unknown, and there is as yet no evidence of contagion. But the doctors who have made the diagnoses, mostly in New York City and the San Francisco Bay area, are alerting other physicians who treat large numbers of homosexual men to the problem in an effort to help identify more cases and to reduce the delay in offering chemotherapy treatment.”

The initial focus was concentrated on the Kaposi’s Sarcoma because the HIV virus had not been identified. However, news outlets and doctors alike continued to look for other explanations. “Many of the patients have also been treated for viral infections such as herpes, cytomegalovirus and hepatitis B as well as parasitic infections such as amebiasis and giardiasis. Many patients also reported that they had used drugs such as amyl nitrite and LSD to heighten sexual pleasure,” the New York Times wrote in 1981. Why were gay men throughout the country developing Kaposi’s Sarcoma and uncommon opportunistic infections? The CDC had no

idea so they formed the Task Force on Kaposi’s Sarcoma and Opportunistic Infections to figure it out. “By year-end, there [was] a cumulative total of 270 reported cases of severe immune deficiency among gay men, and 121 of those individuals [had] died,” AIDS.gov says. However, it wasn’t until September of 1982 that Congress introduced legislation to fund more advanced research. Congressmen Henry Waxman and Phillip Burton drafted and introduced legislation that earmarked five million in funds to the CDC and ten million to the National Institutes of Health for AIDS research. With AIDS still poorly understood and frequent media reports hawking the gay link, AIDS quickly became known as a ‘gay disease’. “Early media reports referred to it variously as a gay disease, gay cancer, or gay plague, and some health care providers and researchers informally labeled it ‘gay-related immune deficiency’ (GIRD), reflecting an initial assumption that it struck only gay men,” Gregory Herek and John Capitanio wrote in the American Behavioral Scientist, “Given the disproportionate impact of AIDS on the gay community, along with the prevalence of widespread negative attitudes toward homosexuality at the time, it was perhaps inevitable that AIDS would be defined in political and cultural terms as well as medically, and that many heterosexuals’ reactions to AIDS would reflect their attitudes toward homosexuality.” The ensuing stigma surrounding AIDS was detrimental to those living with HIV and many believe it initially slowed efforts to treat it and find a cure. “Dallas Buyers Club,” starring Matthew McConaughey, explores the stigma of the “gay disease” and the struggle to find life saving HIV medication in the 1980s.

McConaughey plays the role of Ron Woodroof, a real-life vehemently homophobic Texas rodeo cowboy and electrician, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1985. McConaughey’s character was told he had 30 days to live after his diagnosis. In addition to dealing with this devastating news he was also forced to deal with the powerful stigma of the “gay disease.” The movie doesn't shy from showing Woodroof’s old friends rejecting him because of his diagnosis and forcing him out of the life he once knew. Woodroof’s diagnosis came at the same time the FDA green lit Avonex’s AZT human drug trials. In the movie Woodroof tried to become a test patient; however, he wasn't selected. He saw it as a death sentence because he would only be granted access to the medication after it obtained FDA approval—which could take a decade. In true “Breaking Bad” anti-hero style, Woodroof refused to accept defeat and he took matters into his own hands by circumventing the laws. He found a disgraced American doctor living and practicing in Mexico that was willing to supply him with the medication cocktail he was searching for. However, he got more medication than he needed and he returned to America to sell the pills to other people not allowed in the AZT drug trial. Eventually Woodroof created the Dallas Buyers Club and sold memberships to people with HIV who were denied the experimental drug. According to the Dr. Ronald Valdiserri, Director of Health Human Services’ Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy, “Since those first five cases were reported in early June 1981, nearly 600,000 men, women, and children have died in the United States as a result of HIV disease, and globally, an estimated 30 million people have died of HIV-related causes.” However, HIV prevention, diagnosis, and treatment continues to exponentially

improve." Unlike Woodroof's experience in 1985, there is FDA approval of life saving medication today. But it can't help you if you don't have access to care or know your status. “In the industrialized nations of the world, including the U.S., survival following an HIV diagnosis has improved considerably with the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the mid 1990s. Between 1995 and 1998, AIDS deaths decreased sixty-three percent in the United States. Analysis of surveillance data from twenty-five U.S. states found that the average life expectancy after HIV diagnosis increased from 10.5 to 22.5 years between 1996 and 2005. But it’s not only in the treatment realm where we have seen remarkable advances in knowledge. Prevention science has, likewise, logged very impressive gains in the past three decades,” Dr. Valdiserri wrote in “Thirty Years of AIDS in America: A Story of Infinite Hope,” “Despite declines in reported AIDS cases and deaths since the first decade of the epidemic, CDC estimates that close to 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV, including some 230,000 with undiagnosed infection. And every year in America, nearly 17,500 persons with HIV die.” That means one in five people don’t know they have HIV. Our knowledge of HIV/AIDS has dramatically improved since 1981; however, we have to use this knowledge for it to benefit us. With the availability of rapid HIV testing and free HIV testing throughout Atlanta there is no reason not to get tested and to know your status. FENUXE suggests visiting Dr. John P. Ouderkirk or AbsoluteCARE in Atlanta. Dr. Ouderkirk has been serving our community for over twelve years and provides free HIV testing at Piedmont Avenue Health & Wellness (404.588.4680—735 Piedmont Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30308). AbsoluteCARE Medical Center and Pharmacy also provides HIV testing (404.231.4431—2140 Peachtree Road Northwest, Suite 232, Atlanta, GA, 30309). Honor World AIDS Day this Dec. 1 by learning your status.

eVent donating toys. General admission this year is a new unwrapped toy worth $20 or more plus a $5 donation to For the Kid, but most guests bring presents of far greater value—even bikes, iPods, and gaming consoles—and additional gift cards and toys. Some guests show up carrying bags of presents, which explains the 'mis-match' between the number of guests and the number of presents. Last year around 4,000 people attended the annual event; however, there were more than 5,000 toys donated.

The 11th Annual

TOY PARTY

TOYS WITH IMPACT Since 2003 the Annual Toy Party by For The Kid in All of Us has marked the commencement of the Christmas holiday season in Atlanta. Although the theme of the party varies from year-to-year, the all defining main attraction of the party remains intact: to watch the thousands of toys pile up into veritable mountain of toys. This sight continues to be a beautiful, touching, and above all, a humbling experience for all attendees. There is something deeply gratifying about the fact that the toy you bring will literally end up in the hands of a child from a struggling family bringing a little holiday spirit and joy into their life. “Our goal is to provide holiday cheer in the form of toys and gift cards to 5,000 children

this year," says Alison Hall, president of For the Kid In All of Us, “We have raised the bar significantly and we hope supporters will come out on December 8th with their toys to help us achieve this goal.” No doubt, the biggest strength and motivator for the party and for all those attending is the direct impact of this incredible toy drive. “There are 21 beneficiary organizations who serve the needs of children depending on us as a group to bring cheer to children in need who might not otherwise receive holiday gifts," explains Alison Hall. It's also clear every year that guests at the Toy Party go above and beyond when it comes to

About For The Kid

Founded in 2003, the 100% volunteer organization For the Kid in All of Us has helped struggling families, caregivers, and children during the winter holiday season. Initially the Toy Party was a LGBT house party that grew over the years. Then in 2006 the organization started Backpack in the Park which helps to collect much needed school supplies for struggling families. The Annual Toy Party event has donated more than 38,000 toys and more than $474,000 to charity since its inception in 2003. The toys, gift cards and donations from this year’s Toy Party will benefit over a dozen charitable organizations including CHRIS Kids, Lost-n-Found, Aid Atlanta Women & Pediatrics, Atlanta Children’s Shelter and Jerusalem House to name a few. For more updates on the Toy Party go to forthekid.org.

The 11th annual toy party will also feature a popular silent auction where more than 200 items that were donated by patrons will be auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction will also go to For the Kid. Auction items will include tickets to travel destinations and events both near and far, dining experiences, wellness treatments, and art—you will no doubt be able to find an early Christmas present among the many offerings. Even though the focus is on raising money and providing toys for children in need, For the Kid always makes sure to provide its guests with an extraordinary evening. “Over the last 11 years we have grown from a house party, put on by friends of founder and current Atlanta City Councilman Alex Wan, to the largest holiday cocktail party in our community,” Alison Hall tells FENUXE. This year's event will feature DJ Vicki Powell and DJ Sed who will keep the party going all night long. Plus there will be performance artists, specialty cocktails, and delicious bites to make this year’s party a night of pure merriment. As always the 11th Annual Toy Party will bring Atlantans together for a great night supporting a great cause. Join FENUXE at this year's Toy Party to help bring a little holiday joy to families and most importantly kids in need. Let's create another mountain of toys this year!

HOROSCOPES : 11/21 - 12/5

by Naja Elieva, Your friendly, fabulously costumed, neighborhood Fortune Teller

FENUXE

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

You never cease to amaze! Although one would expect to you to be impatiently tapping your toe, arched eyebrow, waiting to see what you got, you are burrowing groves in the roads finding the perfect presents for the most fabulous friends and the greatest family one could ever wish for. Martini. Gin. Two olives. Dirty. Will definitely get you where you’re going. Out of character, but who cares? Listen carefully to what you are being told on the 7th.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – dEC. 21]

Time to come in out of the cold, dearest one, and in from the dark. Lighten your load by giving cheer and comfort (and a heartfelt gift) to a poor soul. It is the time for fetching brews and potions, whether miraculously smudged across a brow, lifted by a tipped decanter, or blithely spoken over your left shoulder to one whom you desire. Be on the lookout on the 1st, but be sure to sit cross-legged on the floor to gain a new perspective.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Stop drooling! This is a command and not a request. In order to sensibly interact with the world, stop narrowing it down to its least common denominator. There are truly great and wondrous things in and of this world, and you will be absolutely fine if you don’t experience them; you will be enriched, however, by crawling out of your cave, Try something bounteous and unexpected on the 5th. Bubbles just may incite a riot. Take heed—baubles for your dear one will be much appreciated.

after dark

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEb. 18]

Blistering, back-breaking labor is done, appetites are whetted, grindstones disassembled and made ready to support the weight of any and all who would raise a chalice in toast. Down to business, ready to quaff a cherry cordial liquor rooted in a hot, spicy, mulled beverage, stretch, coddle, and linger over the last drop. Get ready to rev up again starting on the 6th.

PISCES [FEb. 19 – MAR. 20] The time for great celebration has come! You have successfully completed those tasks that were set before you, and now you are (shall I say?) prancing, tugging at the bit, and ready to take your head and run free and hard. Just make sure your larder is stocked with silky libations before you set out on your next ‘outing.’ Take the time to meander on the 29th; a garden setting will do just fine for your purposes….a thank you gift will seal the deal.

ARIES [MAR. 21 – ApR. 19]

A little ‘Splash’ will raise your ‘Spirits’—do take some time to create waves—naughty and nice—on the 2nd. Give thanks were due, let it be opulent. Watch out for all the rambunctiousness you seem to be attracting your way. Have a seriously fun party by Naja—can you handle it? Seriously? Take stock of where you’re heading, contemplate whether this will tease you or if maybe THIS one is for the long haul. What looks right is not always so, and vice versa.

Taurus [ApR. 20 – MAy 20] You animal, you! Just out to pasture for barely a minute, and your already ogling the other livestock! Graze, doll baby, lightly, with nourishment as your goal. Canapés, sparkling wines, Naja + Guests--keep the talk small, but pepper it with a grandiose gesture or two. Be nimble and quick on the 27th, to avoid a pratfall.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] He got your goat, AND your fatted calf, AND your bantam rooster…. Ah, the injustice of it all. How much time do you ant to spend counting beans? Isn’t it time to GET ON WITH IT? Have a simple, casual single malt scotch whiskey soiree, an excellent jazz combo in the background, and Naja Elieva giving LipReadings. Un, deux, trois, and presto! Magic on the 30th!

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] You did WHAT? You belched, you farted, you said what you wanted, and no, it was NOT a White Russian! It is time to twitch sistuh, get your Naja on, LipReadings will kindle relationships that have been dormant far too long. A lustrous, heavy, shiny gift is what is called for this time. Don’t stint on the 26th.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] Have a seat, girl, for a change. Lean in, pull someone close to you even closer. Whisper, ask questions—but don’t ask for information you don’t really want. Tell them Naja made you do it. Have a fastidiously organized, incredibly soothing, yet exciting party. The 6th is the day to count your blessings and pour yourself a stiff drink.

virgo

[AUg. 23 – SEpT. 22] Yes, you can gift yourself. Though you have been mostly naughty—it might act as an incentive, it might serve as a gift to those who adore you. Let’s face it—there are many. Be wary, watch your step on the 24th. You are being watched closely, both as a role model, and also to see if you flinch when prodded. A gift with strength, character, and endurance is what the times call for.

libra

[SEpT. 23 – OCT. 22] Ready to call it quits? don’t just yet. Deep breathe. Then sputter, spew, shout invective. Feel better? You would, if you could allow yourself to do it. YOU will receive some very, very nice gifts. Know that their true cost is incalculable. You have never encountered generosity like this before. Say “thank you.” Grace lies in receiving. Calvados is not bad either. Hunker down with your very good people on the 28th.

Holler Poodles!!

Can you believe Christmas is right around the corner? It seems like only yesterday I was sunning my ample boobs in my micro pink thong at the beach and carwash over there in Midtown. Now it’s gotten so cold my hoo ha has shrunk up inside me like a bear hibernating for the winter. But I must confess the holidays are very romantical (especially when its cold outside). Yes, I’m also one of those geeks who loves Christmas music, the season and oh yeah, the gifts. Speaking of gifts, FENUXE Magazine once again sent me to the premiere consumer products showcase for the gays to report on the latest gift giving necessities. Located at the Buford Highway Flea Market and Beauty Barn, it was a visual feast to behold. So in the spirit of “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” I present Mary Edith’s Gayest Things. From the makers of “Sham Wow” and “Snuggie” comes their new product Sham-Moo. Designed to keep you warm and comfortable, Sham-Moo offers style while protecting you from embarrassing spills. With Sham-Moo, 64 oz. soda spills are no problem. Sham-Moo is guaranteed to keep you dry as it absorbs over 2 gallons of warm liquid. www.sham-moowatersports.com (34.95) Those familiar with Summer’s Eve are excited about a product generating buzz from their new division called Winter’s Bone. Marketing products designed for the discerning gay man, Menema is the manly enema for the gay man whose sewer is about to be laid with some serious pipe. Formulated with micro anal beads, it is designed to be inserted anally and then shaken vigorously. Included with your kit is a dvd on how to twerk so you get the maximum friction necessary for a good cleaning. With Menema, not only will you smell nice, you’ll look nice with custom formulated blends. “Fem” has just a touch of perfume oil plus added shimmer to make your 64 : November 21, 2013

mussy sparkle. “Manly” has added pheromones and microfibers that resemble hair. Finally, “Piggy” smells like bacon, has a squiggly nozzle and can be filled with latex to later be used as a butt plug. www.menema.com (6 pk @ 19.99) From the makers of Rascal Scooters come the latest greatest scooter. You don’t ever have to worry about what’s coming down your chimney this Christmas. With the Pooper Scooter, all your worries are over. After bathing, simply sit on the ergonomically designed butt nozzle and seat and you are hermaphraditcallly sealed in. You can go about your daily business while you do your daily business. www.rascalscooters.com/pooperscooter ($979 if you mention Mary Edith Pitts). Love and lashes,

In the wake of a local tragedy, single mother Elizabeth Miller and her withdrawn son Bailey try to jump-start their relationship across the breakfast table.
