CUBAN CHEF CHARMS CHAMBLEE Dino Thompson-Sarmiento

A new restaurant and bar has opened up in the heart of Chamblee and it’s all the rave according to local foodies. Union Hill Kitchen, with Chef Alexis Hernandez at the helm, is now serving lunch and dinner in addition to hosting a hot happy hour! The menu is an eclectic variety of delicious foods ranging from a scrumptious fried chicken to savory ribs and plenty on the menu for vegetarians. The look is industrial chic as the restaurant is located in a refurbished gas station, upgraded by Chef Alexis. Yes, Chef Alexis is talented, not only can he build walls—literally the inside of the restaurant; but he can tantalize your taste buds. My vote is in and it’s a screaming YES – a must visit! You may recognize Chef Alexis as the handsome Cuban from the Food Network show “The Next Food Network Star” and

14 : December 19, 2013

CNN’s “Café CNN”. He is no stranger to the television world. Today, the local networks and celebrities are flocking to his restaurant to get a taste of his unique culinary style. In fact, on any given day you may run into local anchors and celebrity’s as the word around town is the food is awesome. Another little known fact is that Chef Alexis has been supporting the LGBT community by contributing his skills in support of our local charities. He and his partner of 10 years, Marty Dean, have made it a point to support causes dear to their heart. They are committed to the fight for equality and helping those affected by HIV/AIDS. Chances are that you’ve had his fabulous food if you have attended local fundraisers over the last year and half. Originally from Chicago, the couple moved to Atlanta years ago. Chef Alexis honed

his cooking skills in learning agriculture on his family's 65-acre farm. Just 2 years after graduating from Culinary School, Chef Alexis became a finalist on the Food Network show. From there he has been a sought out celebrity chef in Atlanta, Miami and New York, coaching clients on healthier food concepts. Chef Alexis had been searching for a restaurant space as an outlet for his passion for food. They have been watching the culinary growth of the Brookhaven area when this location became available. Just off Peachtree Road, tucked in the Chamblee community now seems to be the perfect place for Chef Alexis’ creative menu offerings. I am told Chef Alexis is still refurbishing parts of the restaurant—a charcuterie will be added after the new year. These evolving creations at Union Hill Kitchen will undoubtedly entice diners to visit Chamblee. So set your GPS to Union Hill Kitchen and treat yourself to the newest and hottest eatery in town. It is a 5-minute drive from the heart of Buckhead—well worth it.

Located in the heart of downtown Chamblee. Union Hill Kitchen 5336 Peachtree Rd, Chamblee, GA 30341 (770) 458-6252

ConfidenceOF A VIXEN Anne Clarke Associate Publisher “According to 'Webster's Dictionary' a vixen is a female fox,” LeeAnn Maxwell told FENUXE Magazine in a recent interview. As CEO of Vixen Vodka, she knows a bit about that word. “To me it embodies confidence,” which is what LeeAnn and her girlfriend wanted the Vixen brand to connote. "Flirty, sexy and sassy, but not slutty," she says. The brand was conceived during a St. Simon’s beach vacation when LeeAnn and friend, Carrie King, just decided to just "go for it!" LeeAnn then reached out to Eddie Snyder, whom she has known since high school. “Let me tell the story,” Eddie interrupts. He and LeeAnn were high school sweethearts—love at first sight for both. They even got married, but Eddie later realized he was gay. But they are still best friends, “kind of like brother and sister without the incest,” Eddie quips. As the Creative Director of the Vixen brand, Eddie’s input has given the brand a direct LGBT representation. In the first year, since the launch of the brand, Vixen sponsored the Drag Queen Bingo and the P.A.L.S. float in the Atlanta Pride parade.

I AM BOLD. “The brand is about confidence, empowerment and acceptance of who you are,” says LeeAnn. The response from the LGBT community has been supportive because Vixen promotes acceptance and has a hands-on marketing approach. “We say Sara Blakely (Spanx creator) used panty hose to get her point across, we use vodka," the duo says. While it is true that Vixen was originally created for a women’s palate, the taste is smooth, gluten free and perfect for crafting a cocktail at 80 proof. It's definitely vodka you can sip on! And that may be why men have also gravitated to the brand. “Vixen goes both ways,” expresses Eddie. It could also

16 : December 19, 2013

be the sexy legs on the logo that catches men's eyes. But either way Eddie certainly knows about going both ways as he now resides in New Orleans, a place he believes blurs lines —"what used to be gay is now more mainstream there," he explains, "Sexuality is less of an issue in New Orleans." When starting Vixen the founders discovered that big alcohol brands largely ignore the female market. They typically push the flavored concoctions on women. “The big companies don’t speak to the women or gay market directly,” expresses LeeAnn. Vixen, as a brand, fixes that and focuses on acceptance, she adds. When asked what celebrity would embody the Vixen brand, Eddie says Rita Hayworth would be "an amazing vixen." The team behind Vixen are so passionate about vodka if they were trapped on a deserted island (or hunkering down in Atlanta in "The Walking Dead") the 3 things they would take with them "are the 3 ingredients for a cosmo," Eddie joked, "add the ice." Don't worry Eddie! We'll bring the ice and we'll share a toast to this delicious vodka.

Vixen has planned to expand to 5 states in 2014 with a firm base in Atlanta. For recipes or to find retail stores with Vixen, visit VixenVodka.com.

Atlanta is a foodie heaven. You won't find us on many national "Top Ten Foodie Cities In America" lists, but our thriving culinary scene is a Southern secret worth sharing. Forget about fine dining in New York City and skip the jetlag from a gastronomic jaunt to San Francisco. Atlanta and its surrounding areas have fantastic foodie spots and odds are there is a great local gem near you. When we started doing research for our Atlanta Foodie Issue we were floored by the sheer number of amazing eateries located both ITP and OTP. It's a testament to Atlanta's foodie culture and the quality of restaurants we have that so many new restaurants continue to open and keep a steady business. For a restaurant to survive in Atlanta it’s got to rise above the rest by offering diners not only tasty food, but also a comfortable atmosphere and stellar service, too. Because restaurant competition is fierce in Atlanta it keeps chefs and restaurant owners on their toes creating new recipes, trying out different flavors, and experimenting with creative new cooking techniques. This competition also keeps restaurant prices in Atlanta relatively low when compared to other cities our size. Finally, this is the South. We know good food and we'll come up with any reason for a social gathering over a great meal. Included in our Atlanta Foodie Issue is a snapshot of what our city's foodie scene looks like today. However, it isn't an exhaustive list. There are scores of amazing restaurants that we weren't able to talk about this year, but we look forward to highlighting them in our regular "Eats" section in the magazine. Do you have a favorite foodie spot in Atlanta? Share it with us at FENUXE.com!

Favorite Dish: Seared yellowfin tuna with fingerling potatoes

THE OPTIMIST THE WORLD IS THEIR OYSTER There is a reason why The Optimist was voted “2012 Restaurant of the Year” by Esquire magazine—step into the hangar-style and subtly nautically themed eatery and you instinctively sense that this is American food culture at its best. The menu is centered mainly around seafood, but there are plenty of options for meat lovers to enjoy a first-rate meal.

“I find Atlanta's food and dining scene interesting because I believe that the local consu mers are really becoming aware of what is good and what is not. Part of that stems from coming out of an economic downturn. Service is extremely important right now, people want to be appreciated. Also so many chefs have realized that local food is important and you see local and regional ingredients on many menus now. It's nice to see that happening, we've got a lot of growers and ranchers and dairies out there that want to increase their business and what better way than to partner with a restaurant.” - Steven Satterfield, Owner of Miller Union 20 : December 19, 2013

MILLER UN ION FLAVORFUL SIMPLICITY The dining space exudes an almost Scandinavian vibe with cool simplicity and cosy nooks. Their menu is created around the availability of seasonal and local produce. This often puts a delicious spin on regular restaurant staples making them far from ordinary. Simple, rustic and full of flavor.

Ria Pell In Memoria m: The chef with a larger-than-life personality, Ria Pell, died of natural causes this month at just 44 years old. Ria’s Bluebird Café, comfortably nestled in an industrial area, truly revitalized the entire neighborhood around Grant Park. She also opened a second restaurant, Sauced, in the area. As the winner of Food Network’s “Chopped”, Ria’s star was on the rise as the world fell in love with her food like Atlanta did! Her signature dishes included many ‘comfort food’ favorites and ranged from handsifted pancakes to her a mazing slow cooked brisket. In addition to her culinary achievements many remember Ria’s compassion for people, fa mily and friends. She often provided food for local charities like the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Fighting Hunger. Ria is survived by her wife Kiki Slaystana. Atlanta has lost a foodie icon and a truly wonderful woman.

with the audience and—as always—her outfit was incredibly cute. But Angelica D’Paige wasn’t always the confident entertainer that rocked the stage at LIPS Atlanta. “I stumbled upon entertaining at the beginning of my transition. I was 21 years old and I met some friends at Blake’s on the Park. I saw a drag show and I fell in love. It was a place where everyone could be themselves and people just came alive when they stepped on stage. I wanted to be a part of it,” Angelica said. Angelica still remembers the first drag show she ever saw like it was just yesterday. “The first performer I saw was Shawnna Brooks. The second was Charlie Brown and then I saw Martina D’Amante. When I saw her for the first time it was like I was watching one of those fairy-tales and seeing a make believe princess. That was her. This little woman with this big beautiful headdress and gown. I was like… I’m going to be one of those girls!” Angelica recounted.

ATLANTA'S QUEEN OF QUEENS

Angelica D'Paige

ATLANTA HAS AN INCREDIBLY TALENTED DRAG COMMUNITY! FROM THE ARMORETTES TO NATIONAL CELEBRITIES LIKE NICOLE PAIGE BROOKS, PHOENIX, MARIAH PARIS BALENCIAGA, SONIQUE AND OTHERS THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. THIS YEAR FENUXE INVITED ATLANTA’S DRAG ENTERTAINERS TO COMPETE IN THE FIRST EVER DRAG WARS COMPETITION. THOUSANDS OF VOTES WERE CAST ONLINE AND THE ENTERTAINERS WHO RECEIVED THE MOST VOTES WERE INVITED TO PERFORM IN THE LIVE “QUEEN OF QUEENS” COMPETITION AT LIPS ATLANTA ON DECEMBER 10TH. The competition was exciting because all of the performers were truly top-notch and at the top of their game. It was the beautiful and accomplished Angelica D’Paige, however, that was crowned the 2013 “Queen of Queens!” FENUXE caught up with Angelica after she was crowned to see what it felt like to be named 2013’s “Queen of Queens.” “It means the world to me!,” Angelica said. However, Angelica wasn’t sure if she would be able to win the crown before the show started. “An hour before we had to arrive at LIPS Atlanta I went into crisis mode. 34 : December 19, 2013

The things I chose to do [for the Drag Wars “Queen of Queens”] I wasn’t able to do because something came up. I almost called to say that I couldn’t make it. But I thought about it and it hit me. Country is my thing. I’m a little black country girl and I love country music. So I thought, wait a minute, I’ll just go out there and be myself. I can just go out there and be my happy, bubbly, countrygirl self and that’s exactly what my outfit, if you looked at it, showed: a little countrygirl, with little boobs, blond hair, curls, and just being happy,” Angelica explained. And indeed her country performance was a hit

In true Angelica spirit she jumped at the opportunity to talk to Martina after the show in hopes that she could learn how to break into Atlanta’s drag community. “I met her and we started talking. Believe it or not when we first started talking she thought I was a lesbian. She had no idea what I was talking about when I asked her if I could do what she did. After that she and I met for lunch, talked about it and she took me under her wing and started to groom me,” she remembered. Even after years of success she’s never forgotten how much it means to help others in the drag community. “A lot of the girls ask questions and I’m always there to help anyone or give advice,” Angelica said. But Angelica also believes that there is something special about Atlanta’s drag community. “Drag in Atlanta is amazing. I won’t say I’ve been everywhere to see every type of drag, but I think our city has the most diversity in drag entertainment. Every type of queen that you can find is here in Atlanta. From outrageous, feminine, to downright campy with beards and everything inbetween that. That’s what makes Atlanta different from everywhere else. We are so diverse and we have every aspect of drag here,” Angelica said. We agree Angelica! Atlanta’s drag community is one of the best in the world! If you’d like to see Angelica D’Paige perform on stage you can see her Monday nights at Burkhart’s Pub, Wednesday nights at LIPS Atlanta, Friday at Burkhart’s Pub, and on Sunday’s at 10th & Piedmont.

HOROSCOPES : 12/19 - 1/2

by Naja Elieva, Your friendly, fabulously costumed, neighborhood Fortune Teller

SAGITTARIUS

FENUXE

[NOV. 23 – dEC. 21] Coal, large sacks of it. Yes, can lead to black lung. Check. Yes, can get on your hands, and make a mess. Check. But you can warm yourself, you can write with it in a pinch, you can use it as a filtration system or even as a type of insulation if need be. Up to you-what do you want to do with your gifts? Miserliness begets loneliness. The lullabies of false gods calm only so long, you will yearn to hear the sirens wail again.

Capricorn [dEC. 22 – JAN. 19] Often times you want to hold onto things, to keep yourself In the same fetid little cocoon that you know and love instead of taking the risk of exploring the great open yonder of Blue Skies, of promises, and fresh air. Holding on to what you have is prudent but there are times when we have to open our hands, our arms and our hearts and let other people attempt to rein us in. You will shine on the 28th!

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEb. 18] Do you have to try to steer everyone into the outcome you expect? Allow the process to unfold of its own volition and not be dictated solely by you. Hunker down, gnaw on a crust of bread, rest, snore , pick your nose--let someone else rule the world on the 12th. They’ll do a fine jos, thank you very muc!

PISCES [FEb. 19 – MAR. 20]

When he asks you what you would like, you are allowed to answer and say it to him. Really. Everything else becomes an exercise in self-defeat, let go, let it be , ask for what you need. The 20th-things go bump in the dark. You figure that one out, sweety-pie.

ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19]

There have been some very trying and difficult circumstances seemingly in a log-jam, a holding pattern. Remember: As enormous as this urgently seems to you right now, in a very short period of time your view of things will have shifted. The feelings you have been trying to keep under lock and cover snuck out at night. They don’t don’t look half as miserable as youdda thunk. Keep your eyes peeled on The 3rd. Kindred spirits lurk.

Taurus [APR. 20 – MAy 20] “What will the New Year bring,” you ask yourself over and over, so besotted with the question and how it feels in your mouth that you nonchalantly forget to keep looking around you in search of an answer. Here it is: Dramatically change your ways or you will be flabbergasted by how much the same things seem to be.

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] Two rounds. You lasted a mere two rounds and you’re ready to throw in the sponge? Nay, grab your pool cue, and prepare to hit some hole-in-ones. I mean scratch. No, make that SCORE! Don’t be a sore loser on the 12th. It is essential that you offer guidance and protection to someone who comes to you as a total unknown.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Everyone has forgotten your transgressions in the interim, except you. There are not many ways to go but forward, and you, my darling, are a survivor. You are loved, you are ensconced in love, and it is time to choose apparel to let your dreamy side emerge. Soft, shimmery, translucent, swirly, even if just a scarf, will give you the softness you crave and deserve. The 13th is like a dream. Stay sharp enough to register the beauty that surrounds you. Gratitude is warranted.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] You are learning quiet and stealth—unheard of traits for you, but yes, you can learn to take a backseat for a while. Work at developing your compassionate side--it is the singularly most potent weapon you possess, and my dear, you have an enormous arsenal. Those traits you exercise are the ones you master, and you are learning a softer, kinder way. Sure, there are those who will try to take the opportunity to squish you in what they perceive as weak moments, but your are unsquishable by your very nature. Revel in your crown, your headdress, your jewels and your inner glow on the 7th. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you, though nibbles are appropriate.

virgo

[AUg. 23 – SEPT. 22] Presents? For you? Just say Thank You. You are entering a phase of receiving; use the time to grow your inner resources, to enrich your skills, and to bring order to the chaos you have allowed to get out of control. Accept the help that is offered to you on the 5th--there is no shame to learning a better way to handle things. The 8th, for you, can be a miraculous milestone in your evolution. Wear something structured, but nice. Winter Whites set off your beautiful complexion.

libra

[SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] Like the Phoenix, you, too, will rise again from that shattered heap of ashes that formerly went by the name of Ego. There is No warranty. there are No replacement parts, but steely, unrelenting grit is the essence of your persona. Know that you are loved, but until you love yourself, it is for naught. This may seem totally out of character, but somehow plaids, wool, and cashmere seem to be calling. Go forth into the night heavily swaddled on the 9th.

scorpio

[OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] You are currently deluding yourself; you need to remove your blinders, throw open the portals, rub your eyes and try to truly take in your surroundings. They have changed n’est-ce pas? Will you continue to delude yourself? A naked eye, a straight back + cool composure will aid you greatly in achieving your aim, though you do not want to believe it is even possible. It is. You will make marked, measurable progress on the 10th. Crepe-soled shoes and a cape are good friends.

Holler Poodles!! With the new year upon us, resolutions abound. I don’t know about you but I’ve made so many resolutions in the past (and failed miserably) that I’ve decided I’m not making any more regarding my body. I am continuing with my program sponsored by Fenuxe Magazine which is a comprehensive program providing a nutritionist/trainer and therapist. As of this writing, I’ve lost 45 lbs and 6 inches off my waist. I’ve been consistently losing 1-1.5 lbs. a week and am not in any hurry to lose it any faster. I’m told when you lose it slowly, it doesn’t come back. I have so much more energy but most importantly I feel “centered.” While I recognize the fact I’ve “done” the work to achieve these results, I could not have gotten this far without my nutritionist and trainer Kayt Wolfe (info@pulsebykaytwolfe.com) and my therapist Allison 404.332.8880. If you’re looking to transform your life, I’d recommend these two ladies without reservation. As I’ve said before, all three areas have been critical to my success thus far but if you were to take one away, I don’t think I would be as successful. I hope whatever your plan for the new year is, it includes taking care of yourself, friends and family. Be safe and have a Happy New Year! Love and lashes,

NORCOSTCO ATLANTA COSTUME DRAG TIP: Aren’t you tired of your lipstick bleeding and not lasting? I’ve tried out two new products at Norcostco Atlanta Costume which are the “bomb!” Girls, run into Atlanta Costume and try out Face Atelier’s Lip Putty and Lip Lock. Face Atelier’s Lip Putty is used under your lipstick. Lip Putty fills in those pesky fine lines in and around the lips, eliminating colour bleeding, blurring and blotching. It also moisturizes and hydrates the lips because of its singular combination of essential oils and vitamins. And it also provides organic ultra-violet protection and is fragrance free. Lip Lock acts as a sealer that will not change the color of lip product, lengthens lip color wear time, feels weightless on the lips and is synthetic fragrance free and color free. Girls, you’ll love these products. Norstco Atlanta Costume is located at 2089 Monroe Drive. 404.874.7511 www.norcostco.com
