CASHING IN Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director Along with your phone and keys, your wallet is part of the ‘holy trinity’ of personal belongings – no matter where you go it is always with you. And whether you are into a traditional pocketbook, a designer bi-fold or a simple leather bill-fold, it always gives a great first impression if you whip out a wallet, which is not over-stuffed and is in overall good shape. After all, some of your most important documents and cards are contained in your wallet so why shouldn’t they be both protected and presented in the best possible way?

HOW TO LOSE THE BULGE

A stuffed wallet is a good thing if it’s stuffed with cash and not coins, oodles of loyalty cards and receipts dating back to that drunken fast food frenzy in 2005. An over-stuffed wallet will not only damage your important IDs and credit cards, but it will also ruin your clothes and your silhouette. Wear it in your back pocket and your ass will be magnified. In the front it will more than likely transcend your actual bulge - and you wouldn’t want that, would you? 10 : January 16, 2014

SEPARATE CARDS

NO RECEIPT STORAGE

Don’t use your wallet for coin storage where they will bend and scratch cards. Instead keep (a little) change in your pocket, in your bag or in your car where you actually might need it. Maybe even make a change jar at home, which in no time becomes a good little stash of cash. Or tip more generously.

Split up your cards so those that you use daily get a separate slot and those you use infrequently are stacked in one slot. And lose all those loyalty cards that you almost never use.

You don’t need to store all of your receipts in your wallet. You can either take them out and store them, or you can snap a photo of them with your phone which is perfectly fine for refunds or warranties.

STYLE DRIVEN Mikkel Hyldebrandt, Fashion Director

A car is a means of transportation that takes you from point A to point B. Sounds pretty simple but as you know almost nothing in life is simple. Your car is in reality so much more and it says so much about who you are. Which is why it's so important to inhabit your car in style. Because as a wise man once said; sometimes it's not about the destination, but the journey itself.

SAVVY FOCUS : THE BETSY HOTEL Dino Thompson-Sarmiento and Christopher Daniel

THOUGH THERE ARE NUMEROUS FOUR STAR, FOUR DIAMOND HOTELS THAT SPAN THE GLOBE, SPENDING A FEW, DAYS AND NIGHTS AT MIAMI’S EXQUISITE, COLONIAL-STYLED BETSY HOTEL IS THE MOST EXQUISITE RETREAT ANYONE CAN WISH FOR. The Betsy is conveniently located on Ocean Drive amidst South Beach’s tropical landscape. The staff rolls out the red carpet for everyone that walks through the doors and across the fabulous terrazzo tiles. It’s the type of place where every ice bucket comes delivered to the rooms filled to the rim and the fruit trays are always fresh and extravagant. The Betsy’s staff waits on guests hand and foot, so expect to live like a king or queen. The plush king-size poster beds are draped with bright white soft pillows and the 14 : January 16, 2014

finest linens available. The staff even places a poetry bookmark made with wildflower seeds on the pillows every night and waiters constantly refill water glasses after only a few sips. Don’t even think about lifting a finger or blinking an eye because The Betsy has its guests covered. Let’s say a couple decides to take a walk along the white sandy beach and enjoy a cool breeze by the palm trees. The Betsy’s concierges will supply two padded beach chairs, a hut, fresh towels and a complimentary tote bag for carrying books. The Betsy knows how to provide everything without question, whether it’s an umbrella, snuggly robe or a Sherpa. The luxury retreat boasts 61 rooms and is known for its lively, captivating details and feature areas that will pamper you in paradise. There’s a state-of-the-art 24 hour fitness center, a courtyard pool and

a Wellness Garden and Spa equipped with private cabanas for deep massages. And don’t miss a chance to visit The Betsy’s rooftop wooden deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, where a cool ocean mist lightly showers over the bar area. The Betsy – restored as a boutique hotel in 2006 – is the Southeast’s singular literary hotel noted for its awardwinning, studio-savvy Writer’s Room. The tranquil second floor hideaway and best kept secret has hosted some of the most creative minds and thinkers of our time: Poet Laureate Billy Collins, President Obama’s 2013 Inaugural poet Richard Blanco, NPR’s Scott Blakenship, Project Runway’s Emilio Sosa and NYU professor Thomas Healy. The Writer’s Room was unveiled in April 2012 during National Poetry Month to ensure the arts are preserved and regarded as cultural necessities. On any

during their stay and a journal as a token of appreciation.

given night throughout The Betsy, there is live music, art exhibits, poetry readings or book signings going on simultaneously.

Historic yet contemporary, The Writer’s Room is a breathtaking attraction at The Betsy. The space is replete with authentic black walnut hardwood floors, white wooden shuttered windows and white cabinets. Pulitzer Prize finalist poet Hyam Plutzik’s desk, the main feature, has a mini-library above. The marble bathroom is another dose of dramatic: high definition LCD-TVs with a Bose sound system in the mirrors, as well as a spacious walk-in rain shower. Literature and those that create it are highly revered here: writers are given a daily per diem

If patrons work up an appetite, The Betsy’s BLT Steak features some of the most delectable cuisine, courtesy of Chef Laurent Tourondel. Consider trying a succulent sushi fish taco or the magnificent peekytoe crab with mango. One of the best steak restaurants in South Beach, it’s just wrong not to sink your teeth into a mouth-watering Porterhouse for two or a juicy New York Strip with a side of creamed spinach or grilled asparagus. The Betsy is also one of the few hotels in the world that reaches out to diverse communities. Since reopening in 2009, The Betsy has actively partnered with over 200 service organizations onsite. The American Black Film Festival (ABFF), the Jewish American and Holocaust Literature Association National Conference and the John

Lennon Educational Tour Bus are some of the programs and festivals that selected The Betsy as their host hotel. Among the many other fine touches: all of The Betsy’s rooms each carry MALIN+GOETZ bath products, Sferra linens and Illy coffee (each of the brands support strong community and the environment). Proceeds from purchased tote bags at The Betsy are donated to Zara’s Center, which assists children in Zimbabwe affected by AIDS. The Betsy Hotel’s environment breathes an unprecedented regal attitude and flare to all guests. It’s genuine service that goes beyond exceptional and redefines Southern hospitality. Even after just one night there, it’s quite obvious that The Betsy Hotel’s presentation and experience are everything its motto insists: “Expect no more. This is happiness.” Visit www.betsyhotel.com and book your getaway today.

A lot of gay men and lesbians tend to be fashion forward – even trendsetting – with product selection. Many are willing to pay a high premium for style. When it comes to cars – like most – we want value, as much as comfort and appealing design. It’s true, we may skimp on comfort upon occasion (remember platform shoes and skinny jeans?), but the value and style; including the fun factor and ease of use, are key when choosing our personal ride. And for those hardcore gear heads who rotate their own tires and change their own oil, these wheels will delight you. FENUXE has selected several 2014 cars that we think will fit your taste and lifestyle – to a tee. There’s something here for everyone!

AUDI A7 We like the hatchback – there I said it! The Audi A7 is swoopy, with a ducktail tush and angular metallic front. It comes complete with sexy LED headlamps that are a shining star in car fashion (we do like our shiny things). The sloped cabin roof does create tighter headroom, although the generous cargo hatch area is a big plus. Add the wood interior treatments and luxurious seats and the Audi feels like a $100k car. We would recommend the V-6 engine, which will give you more than enough power and performance but save at the pump. Put the savings into the sound system! Tunes are a must.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLA-CLASS The new CLA-Class from Mercedes is reinventing the U.S. luxury car market with its 4-door coupe design, long sexy lines and a realistic price point. After introducing the new class in late 2013 the company saw a seventeen percent increase in sales with seventy-ďŹ ve percent of buyers new to the brand. And why not? With a starting price of $29,900 the CLA-Class is a great way to wade into the luxury car market without breaking the bank. Check out the all-new 208 horsepower turbo inline-4 engine and the car’s incredibly low drag, when combined will give you performance to spare without being a gas guzzler. Then slide inside the cabin and admire the view from the optional panorama glass roof. This is one sexy machine.

JEEP CHEROKEE Guys, this is not just for your lesbian friends. The 2014 Jeep Cherokee is the all-new smaller brother of the Grand Cherokee. Yes, there is the trademark seven-slot grille, but the front bumper is sleeker, the rump is revised and the headlamps squint. This SUV has the staple Jeep thick body sides and the high arch wheels for ground clearance (perfect for navigating Atlanta’s often bumpy roads). The all-wheel drive system is a much-needed bonus for your in-town, o-road adventures. Honestly, the cabin quality is surprisingly desirable, from the basic to the luxurious addons. Want to tow your boat to the mountain house or the lake? The Jeep Cherokee has the muscle to get you there for all of the fun.

Starting Price: $22,995 Gas Mileage: 22/31

FIAT 500C ABARTH This is the ultimate Italian driving experience with top down motoring. The Mini Cooper with power and style, you could say. The Fiat 500c Arbarth features a 1.4 liter multiair 160 horsepower, four-cylinder weighted engine and a five-speed transmission. It may be small, but it drives big. The amenities are unparalleled: leather-covered seats (nothing beats Italian leather), automatic climate control, heated front seats and a TomTom navigation unit. A simple knob controls Fiat’s cloth top roof, allowing for partial adjustments based on sun and passenger comfort. This unique top is quite heavy and is surrounded by rooftop framework completely separated from the side doors and rear window, providing substantial wind buffeting. In other words, it allows you freedom similar to a convertible, without the undesirable impact on a suave hair style!

Starting Price: $22,095 Gas Mileage: 31/40

BMW 3 SERIES SEDAN BMW score points for fuel efficiency and the optional BMW ActiveHybrid system that helps avoid unnecessary fuel consumption. The BMW 3 series sedan standard auto Start Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle is idling, making it perfect for the Atlanta driver navigating traffic jams, road work and long red lights. The integrated camera system is also a great navigation tool that comes standard. The Park Assistant feature can measure the size of the parking space as you drive by, allowing you to determine if it’s a proper fit! Not to be outdone by various SUVs, the BMW 3 series sedan Comfort Access option allows you to open the tailgate with your foot. Of course, BMW has quality interior design, exquisite exterior lines, performance functionality and handling, but you do not have to go big to have the best. Yes, the 3 series truly feels like the 5 series. Sometimes smaller is better.

Starting Price: $32,750 Gas Mileage: 32/45

CORVETTE STINGRAY 2014 Throw back car of the year! We love the newly designed stingray with its quad rectangular LED taillights and removable carbon fiber roof. It feels like a hot rod. The lines are uniquely Corvette and aggressively sleek while the interior features multi-adjustable seat designs (heated and cooled) and impressive material stitching. The Stingray is a V8 engine but with variable-displacement it runs on four cylinders at cruise to conserve fuel. The Corvette is synonymous with power: zero to 60 in four seconds exemplifies just that. For the techies, the touch screen LCD panel allows you to swipe through configurations. Chevorlet’s MyLink InfoTainment provides Bluetooth calling, automatic climate control and 3d navigation. The 2014 Stingray has put Corvette back in style. With design influences reminiscent of the early ‘60s and a touch of ‘80s bad-ass boss, it’s like a ride in a rocket ship.

HOROSCOPES : 1/16 - 1/29

by Naja Elieva, Your friendly, fabulously costumed, neighborhood Fortune Teller

FENUXE

Capricorn [DEC. 22 – JAN. 19]

Venus? Retrograde? How you laugh yourself to the bank and on the way pick yourself up a brand new Hotrod, er, set of wheels. Maserati anyone? You would drive one if they paid for you to drive it AND gave you the car for free. For some, you are a tightwad, for others just frugal, extremely frugal. While the rest of the world sweats this ‘retrograde’ business, you are casually stuffing cash into your ROTH IRAs, your REITS, and figuring out ways to avoid incurring debt going forward. Keep a look out on the 16th. Someone close to you will try to sell you snake oil.

AQUARIUS [JAN. 20 – FEB. 18] You let your car [see:self] go too long without servicing and now it will take you much more time or money to get things running smoothly than if you had just taken heed of those strange noises and smells and jolts, and shudders. You, of ALL the Astrological Signs, should be tuned into this! It takes a lot of avoidance to ignore what is good for you, and to ignore tune ups in favor of racing. Remember: Even the most fabulous paint job will not hide dents. On the 22nd, you will receive a kind word, an offer, maybe help in crossing the street. Accept.

PISCES [FEB. 19 – MAR. 20] Dear one, you have begun to shake yourself free of your ingrained doom and gloom nature. And oh, it is about time! A new you is taking shape, getting ready to emerge from your chrysalis, shimmering, iridescent. Waves of joy, waves of greeting, waves of smiling people. You may believe that savings are not for you, but they are. It is never too late (or too early begin). Because you are unsure of what steps you should take and who you can ask for guidance, look for a fee-only certified financial planner. Watch out for those sudden best friends who will seek you out. January 24th proves that you were right all along. Don’t rub it in, be gracious.

40 : January 16, 2014

after dark

ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19]

The last few months have just been, how should I put it, Oh rambunctious one? You overspent. Everywhere. On everything. All the way. Rein yourself in, stoppppp. That is your first priority. You have it already. You have TWO of them, as well. Plug the leak in the dike. Turn yourself inside out if you must, but stop. Sit tight with that concept, wait for this Retrograde/Renegade nonsense to subside, and then re-enter the fray with a different outlook, composure, rebuild your sentience, enjoy your new-found satiety. You will be approached by one you have always looked up to on the 30th and asked for help. Help this person, but do it with discretion.

Taurus [APR. 20 – MAy 20] Nobody knows how many cars you have in your garage. Even more importantly, no one would ever guess how many garages you have. Those around you, even those who have known you for a very long time would be shocked by the passion with which you save not only for a rainy day—more like a monsoon. Splurge on the 21st-23rd (yes, for 3 whole days and nights!) Let down your garrulous guard, look around you, take out a car that you normally only admire, ogle a new trail, go someplace unknown—but enjoy it!

GemIni [MAy 21 – JUN. 22] Most of the time you seem to be pretty cocky and sure of yourself. Not now. You need to be prudent. It matters not a whit if you choose to have a small, gas-sipping beater for the time-being while you perform some financial first aid on yourself, using a tourniquet and your teeth, if necessary. Look at it this way, you have flair, you have style, and you have impressed that upon everyone. If you drive a clunker, than surely that is the next trend, the Shabby Chic of the transportation world, and they will emulate you, you can count on it. Go to that party which you think will be boring. It won’t be, I assure you. A treasure will find you on the 29th.

CANCER [JUN. 21 – JUL. 22] Lo and behold you ran out of gas. And car. And Fuel. “Starting all over again, it’s gonna be rough, ooooh, baby!” No, it’s easy, as easy as you care to make it. I see you swingin’ a leg over a Tangerine-colored Vespa, with someone clinging to you for dear life, following the trail adjacent to the beach, tarry pine scent wafting. Happy New Year, Baby, you gonna go FAST! Check out that almost-roadkill you left in the dust on the 23rd. Definitely worth saving.

LEO [JUL. 23 – AUg. 22] You are an avid student. Those who cast you as carefree are mistaken. However, you do like to take a relaxed posture and survey your well-deserved domain. Thus, you watch and learn, always keeping a keen eye on the leader of the pack, whomever that is for you in that moment. You save, you share, you savor, and you love nothing more than to whisper sweet nothings, crouched in your den. Watch out for an opportunity on the 27th.

virgo [AUg. 23 – SEPT. 22]

You are game, you are nimble, purged, clean, pure, ready to romp, to sully yourself, to act the innocent, then break character and belch. You have thrown all caution to the wind, have stopped planning, stopped saving—how very un-Virgo-esque of you! You will rapidly molt and change back into your usual finely plumed mantel, regal, austere, and cautious. Do run the gamut before then, though. The 18th is your lucky day.

libra [SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22]

You have decided to stop. All of it. Whatever you did, all that you wanted, everything you ignored—you defy your own conventions and wait to see if the Earth will swallow you whole for stopping in mid-stride. You believe that this is freedom that you are tasting, but it is actually nothing but a prolonged sigh. Saving, grappling, and trying are not dirty words. Nor is Chevrolet, come to think of it. Glance long and hard on the 16th, sideways. Take in what you see. Truly take it in. Clamber into a pick-up truck, and be gone to try and discover your true New Year’s Resolution.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22]

Gentle, gentle, now! Don’t bite the hand that tosses you morsels. Take the time for proper introductions and leave-takings, moreover, take the time. It has been more difficult than usual of late to get going and set appointments, whether for fun or pleasure. Not to mention work. Work. Settle in, put in some time, invest the time, reap the dividends, invest the dividends, reap the time—just try to discern when to work and when to play—you know no limits, my dear. That is a most attractive trait—at times. Go easy on the 22nd or your payback will sting.

SAGITTARIUS [NOV. 23 – DEC. 21]

Time to let loose a yodel, a cheer, and a brouhaha, whatever your taste might be at the moment. Cheer and relax, nest, review the kinds of investments that you will actually use—it is all too easy to set a New year’s Resolution only to sigh, brushing your lush locks from your brow, gazing heavenward, and sighing groggily, “Money? What money? I don’t know what you’re talking about!” and then batting those lashes furiously. If you don’t decide what you wish to drive, IF you wish to drive, HOW you want to live, WHAT you need to do to make it happen, well, then someone else may very well decide for you. Again. Agape. That which comes to your attention on the 28th should be held in high esteem and at arm’s length.

Holler Poodles!! I hope your New Year is off to a great start! I know some of you have been in the market to buy a new car and as your intrepid reporter willing to go the extra mile to find those hard to find items, I present to you the most interesting new finds. We’ve talked before how big business is realizing the cash cow (not me) that gay people represent. Now it seems they are marketing cars specifically to its gay clientele. In fact, I was approached to test drive a new car made for the big-hipped drag queen type. FORD and AMC have collaborated on a new model combining the wide bodied (read “big hips”) roominess of the AMC Pacer and rear end safety (read “you touch my back end and I’m gonna let you have it!) of a Ford Pinto . The Ford model PU is designed with safety in mind, automatically detecting when volatile organic compounds are present. Through a sophisticated network of micro tubing, these compounds are filtered away from the passenger compartment and combusted in the tail pipes in a beautiful light show big fart. Sure to be the envy of every drag queen. After test driving this new car, my breath was taken away when I farted when they offered to let me be the spokesperson for the Ford PU. I was still breathless with acceptance. A new collaboration between Bose and luxury car makers provides the discerning music lover an experience like no other. As the youth of today are always clamoring for the ultimate immersive sound experience while driving, Bose has introduced “Body Beats” an anally inserted speaker which extends from the drivers seat into the driver. No bluetooth connectivity needed here. This connection is truly immersive in that the driver feels every bass note, every drum beat and every vocal, pounding you to new heights. Bounce with Beyonce, Gag with GaGa and feel Royal with Lorde. Known for going one step further, they have also collaborated with specifically gay musicians so the internal pounding of music you receive is an authentic immersive experience. Rumors have it Adam Lambert is fully satisfying but leaves a little makeup residue on your seat. The Elton John model is a bit fussy but still provides comfort like a queen. And quite puzzling was the George Michael model which comes with an optional urinal cake. Finally, Clay Aiken was contacted by the manufacturers to see if he could insert anything into the equation but declined. Love and lashes,

General Muir 4th & Swift

621 North Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30308 (678) 904-0160 www.4thandSwift.com Classic, classy and tasty would be our best description. Jay Swift serves up a modern, locally sourced menu with wood-grilled shrimp, braised pheasant and Berkshire pork loin. It’s all presented with fivestar service in an speakeasy feeling interior, which boasts exposed brick and high ceilings. 4th and Swift offers a fabulous Sunday brunch and creative cocktails nightly at the bar. It’s a must-see in the Old Fourth Ward area off North Avenue.

1540 Avenue Place 678-927-9131 www.TheGeneralMuir.com From the family of West Egg Cafe, this is a hot destination for breakfast – bagels, lox and coffee. Can you say Jewish Deli? Lunch can be crowded with lots of customers from nearby CDC and Emory University, but don’t let that stop you from dropping in; the house corned beef Rueben sandwich is fabulous. Of course, they have kept the southern tradition of fried chicken on Fridays (get there early). Belly up to the deli bar for Matzo Ball soup or enjoy the Brisket with shitake mushrooms. Visit them in Decatur at Emory Point

CampagnolO Chai Pani

406 W Ponce De Leon Ave, Decatur, GA 30030 (404) 378-4030 www.chaiPaniDecatur.com There’s nothing old-style about this delightful Indian restaurant. By far the old Watershed restaurant in Decatur has been transformed into a stylish Indian street food eatery. In fact, it’s classic dining at it’s finest. The cuisine of Chaat (Indian street food) features Bombay Chili Cheese Fries alongside the flavorful Sloppy Jai and Kale Pakoras. Don’t miss this flavorful experience in downtown Decatur.

980 Piedmont Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30309 (404) 343-2446 www.campagnoloATL.com This is in the gay Mecca of Atlanta, but chef James Campagnolo makes you feel as though you are visiting the Amalfi coast. The menu of fresh, locally sourced ingredients is simply exquisite. In fact, they serve non-typical Italian fare like to-die-for burgers, a sausage frittata and a Brussels sprout Panini. They’ve transformed the space into a cozy, classic bistro and stepped up the style of the large outside patio. Big bonus: the drinks are perfectly priced for a thirsty gay crowd.

Umi Sushi Bar

3050 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30305 (404) 841-0040 www.umiAtlanta.com With Fuyuhiko Ito creating masterful sushi, Umi is the go to spot in town for some of Atlanta’s ery best sushi. You may remember Ito from MF Sushi – now he’s a partner at this swank Buckhead restaurant. The stylish interior includes charred cypress walls and comforting white oak flooring with sepiatoned photos on the walls. Add the high-end chopsticks (disposable) and you will feel satiated with the various sushi concoctions melting in your mouth. Stop by Umi in the heart of Buckhead.
