Peppermint

Werqs

Atlanta By William Cooke

A

fter selling out all of Europe on their WERQ THE WORLD TOUR, the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race are unleashing their hilarity and hijinks all over the USA this fall. Produced by Voss Events in collaboration with VH1 and World of Wonder, the tour hits the Opera Atlanta Event Center on Sunday, October 22nd. Michelle Visage will host. Alyssa Edwards, Detox, Latrice Royale, Violet Chachki, Kim Chi, Valentina and the deliciously fabulous Peppermint will perform. “It’s been a year since the last American tour, and these queens are coming with fierce new looks, never-before-seen theatrics and over the top production numbers that will leave fans gagging,” promises producer Brandon Voss. “It will be especially interesting to witness how the season nine queens stack up against the veterans. The show is a collaborative effort with all the queens coming together on some unbelievably creative numbers.” We spoke with Peppermint to see how she planned to werq the peach state. Would you agree that season 9 was the best season yet? Peppermint: Season 9 had some of the most historic moments, extremely complex and difficult challenges, Emmy nominations and it is the highest-rated season

to date, plus we had Lady Gaga. So Boom! What was the biggest lesson you learned from being on the show? Peppermint: How to apply white eyeliner and wear stone tights. Thanks Valentina. Is there anything you wish you could do over? Peppermint: It’s a tossup between the naughty nighty and faux fur. I’d probably do Mr.T instead of NeNe Leakes. Have things gotten easier for you after the show or does a queen still have to work hard to make a living? Peppermint: I think I work just as hard but I’m able to pay my bills now. What inspired you to join the Werq The World tour? Peppermint: I wanted to perform alongside girls from other seasons. We had a great time on the European leg. I can’t wait to werq the USA! This will be my first time touring America.

Absolutely. I’ve met most of them and they are all fantastic. It’s great being a part of a huge sisterhood. I’ve got 113 sisters now! Of all the queens from all the seasons, who, in your mind, reigns supreme? Peppermint: (Laughing) Me, of course. Have you kept in touch with the Season 9 queens? Peppermint: I’ve seen most of the girls since the finale. Many of us talk every week online. Sasha and I are still pretty close. We’re working on a college speaking tour together. I do miss my girls, though. Werq The World will be a great excuse to kiki together and act totally wild. What’s the first thing you’ll say to judge - turned - Werq The World host Michelle Visage when you see her? Peppermint: Hey, bitch, I brought you a pink skirt!

See Peppermint live in RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE WERQ THE WORLD TOUR taking place Sunday, October 22nd at Opera Atlanta Event Center (1150 B Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta). $49 - $69 tickets on sale now at www.werqtheworld.com.

Are you friendly with queens from other seasons? Peppermint:

REVIEW

By: Terri Schlichenmeyer

BOOK REVIEW:

“YOUR OWN TWO HANDS.”

That’s what it took – plus a bit of paint, pencil or pen, rouge and ribbon and rickrack – to make that of which you are proud. You did that. You made it with your own two hands. As in the new book “Self-Made Woman” by Denise Chanterelle DuBois, it takes a lot to craft a new life. It began near a lakeside cabin in Wisconsin. DuBois says she was four then, a curious little boy who loved the water – until he fell in and nearly drowned. Once fished out, he was dressed in girl’s clothing while his dried, and he was enchanted. He fought his mother’s demands that he give the clothing up. That was the beginning of DuBois’ lifetime journey toward womanhood. Though his parents were both alcoholics, and abusive, Catholic school nuns were the ones who showed DuBois that sexual stimulation could come from humiliation. In grade school, he preferred playing with girls because he was a girl himself, but teachers and nuns forbade it. When embarrassed in class, he felt stirrings; he asked playmates to spank him, and he learned to welcome negative attention. This led to petty theft and a secret life: DuBois began sneaking into his sister’s closet to wear her clothing. He broke into random buildings to steal panties from strangers, and he lost a babysitting job when his client’s child caught him wearing his client’s lingerie; the ensuing humiliation only enhanced the experience. He dabbled in domination by being a slave to women who wanted his money. He experimented with drugs and alcohol; there were run-ins with the law. He became suicidal.

26: September 22, 2017

And yet – there were bright moments in his life. DuBois fell in love with a woman who went along with fetishes that had grown into full-blown obsessions. He made friends

- albeit, friends who were into drugs. He got married. And he started learning what it would take to be the woman he always knew he really was… “Self-Made Woman” is a lot of things. It’s sad. Poignant. Scary. It’s also TMI sometimes and, at just over 200 pages, it’s a bit too long. From Wisconsin childhood to womanhood in Bangkok, author Denise Chanterelle DuBois tells readers of a multi-city, lifetime self-search, in an account that feels overly detailed and overstuffed. Reading it is akin to being held captive by someone who really needs to tell all, including unabashed details about the world of submission and female domination. Those details are titillating for those who share DuBois’ fetishes, but cruelty and graphicness make them wince-worthy. Add in memories of drug and alcohol abuse and an account of imprisonment that seemed rushed and you could have a mess of unreadablility, were it not for the overall uniqueness, vulnerability, and the truthfulness in this tale. When the story itself lags, those are the things that redeem it. They’re what make this matterof-factly-told memoir one that sets itself apart by its brutal honesty. It’s what will make you want to put “Self-Made Woman” in your hands. By: Always Overbooked... Terri Schlichenmeyer The Bookworm Sez, LLC bookwormsez@ gmail.com

MUSIC

T

he Hounds’ music video for his new single, “Can’t Let You Go,” was banned on Instagram for being too sexually explicit. It features choreography by Andrew Pearson and some incredible dance moves by gay adult film star, Adam Ramzi. “I really can’t wrap my head around why the video was banned,” says The Hound. “I’ve watched it so many times to see if there was a shot that could be considered too sexual, but it’s not there. Our kiss? Our modest briefs? The hair on our chest?” The song is electronic pop with a passionate, heartfelt message about the dangers of a toxic love. “My songs are about my life and the lessons I’ve learned,” The Hound continues. “In ‘Can’t Let You Go,’ I explore how whether it’s with a lover, a friend, or family, relationships define us. Sometimes it’s the people who have been in our lives the longest that we need to walk away from. The change can be difficult, and we struggle with who we are without them. The worst relationships can be impossible to let go of.” The Hound explains more. What is it about troubled guys

that make them so attractive? The Hound: To be completely honest, I’m a troubled guy and just as much as opposites attract, so does crazy. Of course there’s the cliche of the danger and excitement of a bad boy, and I often fall for it, but I also think people like to fix or be fixed. Both roles turn into a vicious cycle and both enable the other. What were some of the first signs that made you realize your ex was no good? The Hound: I still have a lot of respect for him, so I can’t go into specifics. We all know the red flags, ones we either take into consideration or ignore. What prevented you from breaking free from him? The Hound: My heart wins over my head. Every time. Is love addictive? The Hound: When it turns into codependency, yes. How do you know that your current relationship is a healthy one? The Hound: Communication, trust, and honesty. All three of those things need consistent work to have a healthy relationship. Also, therapy.

BY WILLIAM COOKE

How did he react to seeing some of the intimate scenes with Adam Ramzi in the music video? The Hound: He’s an incredible photographer, so he helped out with the shoot and was there during most of the intimate scenes. It probably turned him on. It had to be a fun day. The Hound: Everyone on the shoot is friends, so we all had a kiki in between scenes. I think it also allowed us to be vulnerable and comfortable. My favorite scenes to film were the hallway shots. When it was me and Adam, each shot kept getting more and more intense. We both were like, “sorry, was that too rough?” and the answer was always “no, no let’s go for it.” Were you surprised when the video

was banned from Instagram? The Hound: I’ve seen it happen before. Queer art is more restricted than straight. Personally, I think my video is pretty vanilla. Its intimate, loving, and a little sensual. Meanwhile, you have other companies selling bacon burgers with women in lingerie licking off the sauce that’s dripping down the burger, obviously simulating sex, cocks, and cum - and Instagram and Facebook allow that. Pure (straight) sex is ok, but loving, meaningful, queer intimacy is deemed as too sexual? It makes me upset. I mean, if these platforms censor two cis gay men, imagine what our whole community goes through. We still have a long way to go. The ban doesn’t seem to be hurting the popularity of the video online. The Hound: Personally, I think it was just one employee that reviewed the video for advertising and felt adverse feelings about two men together. Simple as that. It happens all the time on Facebook. I see a lot of my performer friends get reported for stuff that is less threatening than anything you see in mainstream media. It’s a shame because it’s an important song with an important lesson. The Hound: Thanks for saying that. “Can’t let You Go” is meant to be honest and bittersweet. I’m not out for revenge. I don’t meant to paint my ex as a villain because people aren’t just good and bad. We all have both sides. What was the most important thing you learned from the relationship? The Hound: A few things… First of all, a healthy relationship is more than just having a good time. It’s usually the bad times that really show you how strong the relationship is. Also, never underestimate a person’s crazy, including your own. If your relationship is “us against the world,” it’s going to fall apart. Take Eryka Badu’s advice and say, “I’ll see you next lifetime.” In the end, it changed my life in some really incredible ways. I started performing again, and it woke me out of hibernation. EDITH WINDSOR, PLAINTIFF IN 2013 SAME-SEX MARRIAGE CASE, DEAD AT 88 Edith Windsor, the plaintiff in the 2013 United States Supreme Court case that struck down a federal law defining marriage as between a man and a woman, has died at 88, according to her lawyer. Windsor’s death was first reported by The New York Times. As the lead plaintiff in the legal challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013, Windsor was a hero to supporters of LGBT rights, who credited the SCOTUS ruling in her case as being the first step to an eventual ruling two years later that

cleared the way for same-sex marriage nationwide. Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said that with Windsor’s death, “we lost one of this country’s great civil rights pioneers.” “The wheels of progress turn forward because of people like Edie, who are willing to stand up in the face of injustice,” Romero said in a statement. “One simply cannot write the history of the gay rights movement without reserving immense credit and gratitude for Edie Windsor.” Former President Bill Clinton, who had signed DOMA into law, also tweeted about Windsor’s death. “In standing up for herself, Edie also stood up for millions of Americans and their rights. May she rest in peace,” Clinton tweeted. Former President Barack Obama also offered his condolences, and said he had a conversation with her a few days ago, in which he told

Kate McKinnon’s portrayal of Hillary Clinton on “Saturday Night Live” won her an Emmy Award Sunday night and a shoutout in the former Democratic nominee’s new book about the 2016 presidential election. As McKinnon took to the stage to accept her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, ABC News’ Chris Donovan tweeted a page from Clinton’s recently released memoir, What Happened, that mentioned McKinnon’s award-winning portrayal. “She sat at a grand piano and played ‘Hallelujah,’ the hauntingly beautiful song by Leonard Cohen, who had died a few days before,”

Clinton wrote of McKinnon’s cold open on “Saturday Night Live’s” first show after the Nov. 8 election. “As she sang, it seemed like she was fighting back tears,” Clinton added. “Listening, so was I.” Clinton included her reaction to McKinnon’s portrayal in the chapter titled “Grit and Gratitude.” In her acceptance speech, McKinnon took a moment to thank Clinton for those same qualities. “On a very personal note, I want to say thank you to Hillary Clinton for your grace and grit,”
