ANDYCOHEN THE FENUXE INTERVIEW

B

ravo’s Andy Cohen is coming to town and he’s looking forward to one thing in particular. “Every time I meet a guy from Atlanta he’s really cute, so I’m excited,” Cohen says.

The dashing host of “Watch What Happens: Live” and the “Real Housewives” reunion shows will be here May 1 to accept a National Visibility Award at the Human Rights Campaign’s 2010 Gala Dinner & Auction. [See “Party for the Cause” on page 15].

10

FENUXEMAGAZINE

Cohen is also Bravo’s senior vice president of programming and development and has overseen all the gay faves including the “Real Housewives” series, “Top Chef,” “Project Runway,” “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List” and “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” Fenuxe spoke with the charming bachelor about the importance of LGBT visibility, outing celebrities, Kathy Griffin, “Real Housewives” and a moment of rebirth in his own life. Fenuxe: Since you’re accepting an award about visibility in the gay community, can you talk about the importance of gay people in positions of high visibility? Cohen: I think it’s crazy important. I look back on being a teenager in St. Louis and having the only gay people on TV being Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde. Then being in college and being obsessed when “The Real World” came on and I was like, “Oh my God, Norman from ‘The Real World’ is gay and there’s a gay guy living with these people and what do they think of him? And wait a minute, they’re not beating him up, it’s okay!” I just can’t underestimate the power of positive images of gay people. Even gay people just being out there in society, they don’t even need to be talking about being gay. Jeff Lewis [“Flipping Out”] doesn’t talk about being gay much. You don’t see him dating, but he is. Brad on “The Rachel Zoe Project” and on and on and on... They are just people who are good at what they do and they’re living their lives. And I just think that’s important. It’s still as important as it was back then. There are just so many hate cases that come out every day. Fenuxe: There have been a lot of celebrities coming out lately---Sean Hayes, Ricky Martin, Anna Paquin. What do you think about the pressure on LGBT celebrities to come out? Cohen: Look, you can’t out people. I don’t want to out people. But I do think that it’s still as important as it ever was to come out of the closet. And I think Ricky Martin coming out of the closet 10 years after “La Vida Loca” is still important. And sometimes you wish that it had happened at the height of all the attention, but he did his own thing and I respect him doing it in his own time. And ya know, he never came out and said “I am NOT gay.” And there are people that have done that. It irks me when people do that who are gay. Fenuxe: Can you tell us something about Kathy Griffin that we don’t know? Cohen: [laughs] Ummm…she’s hilarious, you know that. She had a bit in her act about how cross-eyed I am and when I talk to the housewives, no one knows what direction to look. She’s great. I will tell you that Levi [Johnston] appears next season on her show, that should be hilarious. She’s got a lot of great guests coming on this year. What else about her? Ummm…she’s a pussycat. Fenuxe: You’ve got the new castmates coming on “Real Housewives” [attorney Phaedra Parks and model Cynthia Bailey]. Is it in production now, and when does it premiere?

Cohen: All we did was announce Season 3 so beyond that, I can’t announce anything else about when it’s coming on or production on “Real Housewives.” Fenuxe: Have there been any thoughts about a spinoff for one of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” castmembers? Cohen: No I haven’t heard that. I don’t know, it’s taken us four cities and a total of like 28 housewives to do one spinoff [Bethany Frankel of “Real Housewives of New York]. So I think that we will be smart about it however we do it. We’re not rushing to do thousands of spinoffs. We care about the mothership! Fenuxe: Kim’s got a bit of a music background, any chance that the “Real Housewives” theme song can be reworked? Cohen: I used “Tardy for the Party” as the “Watch What Happens: Live” theme song for the whole first season, which was 25 episodes. So I don’t know, if she comes out with something great in Season 3, you know that I’m going to be whipping that out on “Watch What Happens: Live.” Fenuxe: What else should we be looking out for coming up on Bravo? Cohen: We’ve got this great show “9 By Design” premiering, it’s about this really groovy couple in New York City with seven kids and they have these unbelievable spaces and turn them around. We have “Top Chef Masters” Season 2, which is so great. We have “ Housewives of New Jersey” which is off the chain, premiering May 3rd. “Housewives of New York” just gets better and better every week. So that’s our slate for the next two months, that’s four nights of programming. And then a lot of fun stuff coming up on “Watch What Happens: Live.” Fenuxe: Our first issue is about rebirth and renewal. Was there a significant moment of rebirth or renewal in your life or career, something where everything totally changed? Cohen: Yeah! I’m going through one right now! I was behind the camera for 17 of my 20 years in the TV business, so I think over this past year getting this “Watch What Happens: Live” show, it certainly renewed my passion for TV in a totally different direction. I’m really getting to do what I originally wanted to do at the beginning of my career while also hanging onto what I consider to be the greatest job in TV. It’s definitely a renewal as new layers of my job are being peeled off. Fenuxe: Thank you Andy! Watch Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” Every Thursday at Midnight FENUXEMAGAZINE

WAYS TO START FRESH

Fenuxe is about rebirth and renewal, about letting go, pushing forward and breaking through. What can you do to get over the hump and flourish in Atlanta?

Let Go, Let Dog. Sometimes when you’re so caught up in your own drama, caring for someone (or something) else levels you out. And thousands of the cutest four-legged friends you can find are available for adoption across the city. Check out PAWS Atlanta and spread the love. So Fresh and So Clean. Dirty boys and girls have their charm, but nothing’s better for a recharge than a spa day. Whether it’s a rubdown, a facial, a detox or botox, Blue MedSpa is ready for you at 10th and Piedmont. Get Aligned. We’re all looking to feel our best. And be the healthiest we can be, right? A great way to do that is to go see Dr.Cohen at Cohen Chiropractic. Dr.Cohen and his team care for thousands who suffer from headaches, neck pain, back aches, and other health related issues. Volunteers are Sexy. Nothing says “husband material” like a volunteer. It’s free, it’s fun and it makes you feel good---it’s like sex without the chance of getting herpes. Try AID Atlanta, CHRIS Kids and Project Open Hand. Let’s Get Soaking Wet! When the dating scene has run dry, it’s time to get wet. The Atlanta Rainbow Trout are super gay and super fun, but they’re not the only LGBT-friendly sporting clubs in town. There are clubs for rugby, tennis, soccer, football, etc. Check out AtlantaGaySports.com for a change of pace. School Is In. Whether you’ve lost your job, hate the one you’re in or are just wanting to shake things up, going back to school is all the rage in 2010. And Atlanta is a haven for the gay academic, from Emory, Agnes Scott and the Art Institute of Atlanta to GA Tech and GA State. There are also LGBT-specific scholarships available, take a look at the Human Rights Campaign’s website for more details and get your learn on. New Do, New ‘Tude. Can achieving a fresh start be as simple as getting a new haircut? We say yes. From buzzing it all off to going all blond, a new haircut is a visual and emotional transformation that will make you leave the past in the past and focus completely on what’s next. And Atlanta isn’t lacking for hair stylists, from the crews at Axiom and Helmet to Richie Arpino’s digs on Paces Ferry. Shop It Up. Spent emotionally? Then spend freely. There’s no denying that endorphin boost you get as you walk out of H&M with a new wardrobe, or drive off from Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta in a new Benz. Set a limit that you can handle and see what a few sessions of retail therapy will do for your outlook on things. Work It Out, Honey. From the crowd at Colony Square Athletic Club to the secluded Gravity Fitness behind Jungle to traditional gay fave L.A. Fitness at Ansley, LGBT Atlantans aren’t lacking for opportunities to break a sweat. Plug in the iPod, throw some weight on the bar and feel the stress (and the pounds) melt away---it’s time to move! The Only Network Gayer Than Logo. If you’re stuck in a rut career-wise and aren’t up for the school route, there are plenty of LGBT networking and career groups in town. Atlanta Executive Network, Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and Out & Equal Atlanta are just a few of them. No more excuses, get out there and get what’s yours.

e started designing clothes because what he wanted to wear wasn’t out there. A lot of people might have that same feeling, but few teach themselves how to sew and actually create what’s missing.

And even fewer jump from Moline, IL to sewing the nights away in their cramped studio apartment in Minneapolis to hobnobbing with celebrities as they launch their clothing line at the Sundance Film Festival. But Jeremy Wiborg did. And his Jeromy Allen line of luxury sportswear is taking off in a big way. The shirts, the hoodies and the button-ups are blanketing backs from coast-to-coast and word is spreading internationally about the Atlanta-based designer. The path from Moline to Minneapolis to Sundance and beyond was forged thanks in part to a supportive mother and Wiborg’s own punk rock sensibilities. Coming out of the closet in 7th grade will prepare a person early for societal pressures, and how not to pay attention to them. He would make those three-hour drives from Moline to Chicago all through his late teens to hit up the clubs, fake ID in hand and The Clash blasting the whole way there. That freedom combined with a mother’s support allowed him to be an individual

and take chances that others couldn’t. “I felt like I could do anything,” he says. “I could wear anything, I could listen to any type of music, I could be who I wanted to be.” Cut to that sewing machine in Minneapolis. The beginnings of the Jeromy Allen line were taking shape but Wiborg needed a bigger stage, so it was off to Atlanta. He developed the line, networked like crazy, never forgot a face and found himself in the good graces of the owners of the popular Blue Jeans boutique. It was through that connection that he landed the spot at Sundance in 2007. “It was confirmation that I was on the right track,” says Wiborg. So now Wiborg’s on his way, spreading the word farther and wider about Jeromy Allen. Every piece is one-of-a-kind, which speaks to that punk sensibility and individualism that he still carries with him from his Moline days. Fashion and creativity is what drives him and helps him keep a sense of identity. “If I wasn’t creative in some aspect, I wouldn’t be happy,” he says. “That gets me through.” And through Jeromy Allen, he’s able to pass on that independent spirit to others, one shirt at a time. You can find the Jeromy Allen line at www.jeromyallen.com and at Kitson boutique in Los Angeles, CA.

hat do gays love more than watching Bravo’s Andy Cohen decipher the madness on Real Housewives of Atlanta? How about dressing to the nines and having dinner with Andy for starters! The Atlanta chapter of the HRC always attracts the best and brightest of our city’s gay glitterati. This year don’t be surprised to rub elbows with a politician or two (or twelve) as we approach an election season where the LGBT community is in the political spotlight. Last year’s HRC event was a fantastic evening where 900 guests raised $400,000 to benefit the work that HRC does for our community. Last year’s guests were treated to an appearance by Cybill Shepherd who accepted the Ally for Equality Award. Also in attendance is Rep. Simone Bell, the nation’s first African-American lesbian to serve in a state legislature, who is accepting the Dan Bradley Humanitarian Award. Transgender activist Vandy Beth Glenn will also take the mic to accept the Leon Allen and Winston Johnson Community Service Award. HRC President Joe Solmonese will also be flying in from D.C. to take part in the festivities for the evening. Atlanta’s gay community will be out in full fierce force on May 1st to support the HRC and reenergize (with a cocktail or two) for the fight for gay rights! Meeting a cute guy or gal (and perhaps future spouse after we gain equal rights) will be the icing on the HRC cake! *Tickets range from $75-$200 and can be purchased through www.AtlantaHRCDinner.com

n the middle of a music scene known more for hip-hop and indie rock, there is a growing artist collective of gay musicians who are packing in clubs all over town. And they are ready to break through. One of the main players in this burgeoning scene has been electropop artist Barry Brandon. Brandon roped in several up-and-coming gay musicians last December for a rousing showcase at Bellissima, including piano man Guyton Maurice, singer Juan Cezar, singer-songwriter Lucas Mire and electropop artist Kyle Strahl. For Brandon it’s about forming a support network in Atlanta modeled on the exploding Brooklyn music scene. “That’s why those artists are getting jobs, that’s why they’re getting booked up, that’s why they’re getting more popular,” says Brandon. “It’s because they’re working together.” Plans are in the works now for a monthly artists showcase at My Sister’s Room in East Atlanta, with the first lineup including host and performer Brandon, the madmen and women of electro-rap group Le Sexoflex (“the sexiest band in the whole mothaf****n world!”) and Vira, a veteran Backstreet performer making his return to the scene.

! P U

The buzz continues at the singer-songwriter showcase at Kat’s Cafe at 10th and Piedmont, where a gay following is growing thanks in no small part to handsome singer-guitarist Kyle Kirkland. Kirkland is a preacher’s son who came to Atlanta after the double whammy of losing his job writing songs for Christian artists at Sony/BMG shortly after coming out, and then getting his house wiped out by Hurricane Ike. But so far it’s been smooth sailing for Kirkland in Atlanta with gigs at Sambuca, The Blue Frog in East Atlanta and the biweekly Tuesday night spot at Kat’s Cafe. He’s blown away by all the support he’s been getting and admires the “many gay musicians that have legitimate talent that are really pursuing their dreams.” But Kirkland is quick to point out that it’s not just about sexual orientation, but that “they have passion and they don’t care what anyone says.” Kirkland is in preparations to record his debut album.

It’s a broad spectrum of gay talent whose Strahl has already seen the benefit from his appear- skills, confidence and name recognition are growing daily, and a few of them just might be ance at the Bellissima showcase. on the brink of breaking through. “At the beginning of my career I was afraid to be out and gay and singing, but when I see people trying to “I hope all of our musicians here in Atlanta do the same thing it inspires me,” he says. Strahl’s are recognized for what they do,” Brandon debut album is about to be released on iTunes and says. “And we are ready to take it to the next level.” Amazon and live dates are in the works. 16

LIVINGTHELIFE

DUBAI By Ernesto Francisco

T

he word is out: Dubai is the world’s playground, and the gays are flocking to take part in the fun.

The sheer opulence and pure ambition of Dubai is astounding. Skyscrapers shoot up into the clouds and the beaches stretch for miles upon miles amidst the warmest, bluest water in the world. The signature Burj Khalifa (Dubai Tower) surpassed Taiwan’s Taipei 101 to become the world’s tallest building at an astounding 160 stories….with more still to be constructed. The final height and number of stories is a secret, which just adds to the mystique. Landing at Dubai International Airport is simply breathtaking. Make sure you get a window seat on your Delta flight over so you can take it all in. (Delta Air Lines flies non-stop, Atlanta to Dubai, U.A.E, five times weekly, www.delta.com). FENUXEMAGAZINE

The airport is a snap to get around and you’ll be in the car on the way to your hotel in no time. For those who like to go green, there’s a gleaming new metro system which can take you from the airport to numerous points all over the city.

TRIPHIGHLIGHTS

Hotel accommodations are numerous, but for the ultimate luxury getaway, head straight to the five-star Mövenpick Hotel Bur Dubai (19th Street, Oud Metha, Dubai, U.A.E., tel. +971 4 336 60 00). The rooms are splendidly appointed and the staff at the hotel is nothing less than exceptional. After checking in, have an early afternoon cocktail at the hotel’s English pub (Somerset’s, ext. 330) or Lebanese bar (Fakhreldine ext. 353).

TRAVEL

Dubai is meant to be seen, so it’s time to step out and check the scene. Jumeira Beach is the playground for the masses in Dubai. And with some careful searching, you’ll find two relatively gay beaches: Jumeira Open Beach 1 and Jumeira Beach Park. The pale-blue water is crystal clear and is a refreshing break from the 109 degree summer sun. Be sure to also visit the lovely gardens right next door.

The opulent five-star Mövenpick Hotel Bur Dubai is the spot. A massive staircase leads to an immaculate lobby and even more pristine rooms.

Fashion in Dubai is all over the place. You’ll see everything from women in full burqa outfits to men and women alike in nothing but a thong. Just be aware that open homosexual acts are forbidden in Dubai, but in a society where men kissing men is a common greeting, take notice of the men whose glances linger a bit long. To complete your Arabian adventure, check out Jules, a quasi-Mexican cantina in the Le Meridien Hotel Dubai (Airport Road, +971 4 282 40 40, open 1100-0300). Don’t be surprised to run into some of the same guys from the beach here at night. Be mindful that Friday and Saturday is the Arabian weekend, so Thursday night is a big night in Dubai. The beats rock all night at club IBO (Millennium Airport Hotel, Airport Road, +971 4 282 18 44 open 1100-0300) where you’ll find sizzling hot locals dancing the night away. So get up, get out, and get moving. There’s a desert oasis waiting to give you the break you deserve. Dubai is your adventure waiting to happen.

Catch a window seat on your Delta flight over. Take advantage of the gleaming new Emirati metro system.

ACCOMMODATIONS

RESTAURANTS Blue Elephant (Al Garhoud Rd, Al Bustan Rotana Hotel) has the best Thai food in Dubai, but if it’s a view of the city you want with your meal then head to Vu’s (Sheik Zayed Rd, Jumeirah Emirates Tower).

ATTRACTIONS Visit Jumeira Open Beach 1 and Jumeira Beach Park where the water is warm and the boys are hot!

NIGHTLIFE Start the night at Jules, a quasiMexican cantina in the Le Meridien Hotel Dubai. Then hit up club IBO for a night you’ll never forget.

TRAVELTIP Be sure to check with the Secretary of State to see if there are any travel advisories for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before you travel (www.state.gov). Please be sure to register with the American Embassy to let them know when you are arriving and how long you are staying.

1. 2. 3.

Pre-heat oven to 375 °. 30 minutes prior to roasting, unwrap chicken and remove innards and any excess fat.

4.

Place chicken on a rack over a foil-lined pan. Sprinkle skin with remaining salt and roast at 375 ° for 1 hour and 15 minutes (internal temperature of 165 °)-- you can check the temperature in the leg near the bone and in the thick part of the breast near the bone.

5.

Rinse Chicken under warm water, pat dry inside and out, and place in bowl. Combine all ingredients, except salt and rosemary, and coat chicken evenly with the mixture. Season cavity with half of the salt and place fresh rosemary and garlic cloves inside. Put skewers through drumsticks so the legs don’t flop or use strings to tie. Tuck the wing tips under the bird.

Allow chicken to rest for 15 minutes before serving with a vegetable medley of your choice.

ry opening up a restaurant in the middle of a recession with a menu devoid of fried foods, trans fats or butter and guaranteeing that every dish is under 475 calories AND make it taste good.

People might think that’s a tad crazy. People would be wrong.

Seasons 52 is shredding the rules and serving up portion after portion of delicious, healthy cuisine---and they’re doing it all in a gay-friendly way. A non-discrimination policy, domestic partner benefits, diversity training and donations to LGBT organizations earned them a high score on the Human Rights Campaign’s equality index. So Seasons 52 loves their gays, but so does Kathy Griffin---and she can’t cook. So what about the food? As Buckhead managing partner Bryan Farkas says, “We’re not a health food restaurant, we just serve healthy food.” They’re able to skip the fryer, trans fats and buttery-goodness and still deliver tasty treats by using natural cooking techniques. Wood-fire grilling, brick-oven cooking and caramelizing vegetables brings the flavor to the forefront. And as the name implies, their menu changes with the season, so you always get your dishes when they are at peak flavor. You’ll find peak flavor in abundance if you order their house specialty flatbreads. We like the Spice Chipotle Shrimp Flatbread with grilled pineapple, feta cheese and roasted poblano peppers. And you can never go wrong with the Fenuxe favorite Garlic Chicken Flatbread, with balsamic red onions, roasted red peppers and mozzarella cheese. If flatbreads aren’t your thing, take a shot at the Cedar Plank Atlantic Salmon or the Char Crust Filet Mignon. Subtle, savory and when paired with the right wine from Seasons 52’s expansive wine list = Spectacular. So if you looking for a fresh start, explore what’s being served at Peachtree and West Paces. Season’s 52 is hearty, healthy, gay-friendly and ready to serve! For more information on Seasons 52 go to www.seasons52.com

he charming guy behind the register says hello before the door has even closed behind you, making the traffic noise from 10th and Piedmont all but disappear. As you walk past the lounge and photography books, the owner Philip Rafshoon buzzes by with a smile and a hello. The smell of various sweets and brewing coffee tantalizes your senses as you walk past two gals exchanging digits. You’re in Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse, and by picking a gay-owned business over one who doesn’t support us, you’re not just making a simple purchase, you’re answering a call to action. The Outwrite purchase will help to expand a collection of books by LGBT authors, giving them shelf space they might not get anywhere else. It brings LGBT authors to Atlanta for in-store appearances. It also allows them to hire more LGBT and LGBT-supportive employees from around Atlanta. There’s also a direct link from the dollar spent at Outwrite to LGBT causes around town. “We’re supporting the LGBT organizations, we’re supporting sports teams, we’re supporting AIDS service organizations,” says Rafshoon. “We’re support-

ing political organizations by helping get the word out on their activities and by connecting people.”

brands to put their money behind. (Hint: stopping by Chevron in your VW Jetta is better for our community than gassing up your Altima at Exxon.)

The Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce calls it “Advocacy through Economics”. Their mission statement emphasizes the importance of supporting LGBT-owned and LGBT-friendly businesses.

It’s an ongoing process that helps our community become better informed about where our money is going, and how we spend it in the future.

“It’s about supporting your own,” says AGLCC board member Glen Paul Freedman. “We have a choice.”

“The success of one of us is the success of all of us,” says AGLC Immediate Past President Sheila Merritt. “Not just for our LGBT constituency but certainly for our allies.”

Freedman decries the act of funneling money into businesses that are antigay: “Why do I need to give them my hard earned money if they don’t support me?” Groups like the AGLCC and Out & Equal Atlanta help generate support for LGBT businesses and non-profits as well as work with corporations to help them adopt a more LGBT-inclusive employment policy. Organizations like these work to make positive changes within the businesses in our community. But not all businesses have a rainbow flag hanging outside their door, so how do we make sure our money is not going to those who discriminate against us? A recent AGLCC project involves assisting and encouraging corporations in completing the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Index, which provides yearly ratings of businesses based on their policies relating to LGBT employees. In its eighth year, the Equality Index includes nearly 600 corporations and has a “Buying for Equality” iPhone app so LGBT consumers will know which

Merritt looks at supporting LGBT-owned and LGBTfriendly businesses like Outwrite and others as a group mission, one that none of us can afford to miss out on. “If our family and our friends and supporters are successful, they will in turn be able to support us as well,” she says. “The power of speaking with your purse strings is really important.” Download the Equality Index from HRC’s website or get the iPhone app and you will find some surprising results. Just a few tweaks here and there in your spending habits can make a world of difference in the fight for equality. Take the next two weeks, alter your spending habits and write us at info@fenuxe.com with what you did and we will include you in an upcoming issue. PERSPECTIVES

lder and gay never worked well together. Gay culture has always been notoriously youth-driven and lines on the face were a visible death knell to the romantic life of the gentleman bearing them. In fact, given the youth-focus of traditional gay culture, it’s something of a miracle that herds of older gay men were not herded onto ice floes and pushed off into an arctic sunset in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. No longer. Middle-aged and gay is a great place to be these days, thanks to changing mindsets and cultural behaviors. And Atlanta, Southern metropolis reborn from the ashes of history, is both perfectly situated to accommodate and encourage all the new mentalities. Look at online gay activity - the demographic has

radically shifted and all the boys in their twenties are shoulder-to-shoulder with men twice their age. What was once a marginalization within a marginalization has become something damn near mainstream. Sex, dating, friendships, even the blue rose of the long-term relationship – everyone’s got a place at the table, online and off. Why? To what arcane shifts in popular mentalities do we owe this liberating of the older gay man? Moreover – what’s Atlanta got to do with it? First, the Southern mentality regarding all gay men is and always has been marked by a striking dichotomy. Although southerners are famously slow to enact legislation favorable to gays, there is an extraordinary level of open-mindedness, even within the most Confederate of Georgians, with regard to gays… On a personal level. FENUXEMAGAZINE

39

The Southerner who will vote down marriage rights is often completely welcoming to his gay cousin’s partner. He or she may strenuously disapprove of gay culture on a large scale but will, think nothing of catching a drag show downtown featuring that same cousin. This is a particular form of Southern pride at play – we can handle it just fine in our homes and neighborhoods. Just don’t tell us how we should think about it, if you please. Enter the new Atlanta. The native becomes the rarer citizen and Northern ideas are infused into the city, infiltrating and changing perspectives in a way so subtle, it can hardly be discerned. Meanwhile, something else is happening as well: generations of young gay man who were so dismissive of their middle-aged brethren are now...middle-aged. It was in the 70’s and 80’s that gay youth was permitted to be assertive, at least relatively so. Bars and bathhouses flourished and, in and outside of these environs, the young gay man was heard. His preferences centered on the gay goals of the day - fast gratifications with the best-looking and youngest men available. Then... the boys got older. We still felt entitled and we still wanted action. So we worked on our appearances and fitness, establishing new parameters for what was gay and older. And we discovered that we weren’t only out to get the hot young boys we had traditionally sought; we were looking

40

FENUXEMAGAZINE

at each other as well. With longing and great interest. Into this mix add the rise of personhood in the gay community. It’s very chicken-and-egg. Which came first - our increased freedoms in the larger world, or our demands for them because we weren’t just a bunch of sex-hungry gay boys anymore? Impossible to say. But one definitely fueled the other. In growing up, the gay generations of the 70’s and 80’s realized that there is more to be had than fifteen minutes of fun. Upon this realization came the need to exercise all the freedoms the straight world has so long enjoyed in an unencumbered way. To a large extent, we parted company with what had been our own kind. Mature now, we still court what is hot. Make no mistake: there is ageism built into every sexual orientation known to man. The most meaningful relationship in the world has within it a component of physical attraction and most of us are genetically encoded to find desirable that which is not especially old. Yet the times have changed. Heads turn on 10th Street as the hot 45 year-old shirtless jogger runs past. Would a man that age have turned heads thirty years ago? Maybe. But the difference is, he wouldn’t have been running shirtless.

Call to RSVP for our next free dinner! Limited to first 30 people.

Dear Mary, I have been with my boyfriend for a little over 3 weeks. Since we’ve been together for so long I think I have fallen in love with him and I am ready to have sex. Problem is, he says that he is a top and will only top. I’m not much of a bottom, but I want to make him happy. What should I do? Thank you for your help! Frustrated from the Fourth Ward Dear Frustrated, First of all, let’s tackle the most serious problem: investing this much time in someone without having sex with them is never acceptable. Think of the hours you can never get back---the tears, the laughter, all those times you broke up at the bar and made up in the parking lot. Anyway, you get the point. Don’t let it happen again. Take it from me, don’t forget that there are plenty of straight, married women who are “bottoming” even though they hate it---and married straight people are completely happy all of the time! So you should do what they do: bottle up your displeasure with the situation and let off steam by making passiveaggressive comments to him at horribly inappropriate times. At his office Christmas party or when meeting his ultra-conservative mother, bring up that one time he did cocaine. “Accidentally” out him by showing up at his high school reunion and insisting he keep his hand in your back pocket. If he refuses, engage him in a screaming match. This is how mature relationships work. No matter what you do, DO NOT attempt to discuss this matter with him. If you show him how you really feel about something, he might not agree with you. If he disagrees with you on something, he might leave you. Better to bottom unhappily than have no one ask you to bottom at all.

Love, Mary Makers-McMark
