“Color Splash: Miami” with David Bromstad Saturdays at 10 PM
David Bromstad is easy on the eyes. Let's get that out of the way now. Need a second?
Okay good, let's continue. David Bromstad is also the talented, charismatic ball of energy known as the host of HGTV's hit show “Color Splash: Miami.” And he's family. The openly gay designer and his top notch team help transform homes from ordinary to extraordinary. He made the “Splash” landing by beating out the competition in the inaugural season of HGTV's “Design Star,” therefore securing his own show. Bromstad ducked out of the Miami sun for a spell to talk to Fenuxe about being HGTV's first openly gay television personality, the hottest colors of the season, the biggest design mistake to watch out for, and what it's like living in the public eye. 10
FENUXEMAGAZINE
Fenuxe: Thanks for joining us David! So before you went on “Design Star,” did you ever consider not being out on the show? Bromstad: Yeah of course, that was one of the things where I was like “Hmm, I'm not the most masculine of people, but I could pull it off.” But, did I want to live that life? Did I want to be that guy that all the gays are talking about like “He's a big 'mo! I know it!” [laughs] I just needed to be myself and I was proud of who I was and proud to be gay, so I made the decision probably about a week or two before and it was all uphill from there. Fenuxe: And how was the response to it? Bromstad: Everyone has been so supportive. The audience has been supportive, HGTV has been amazingly supportive. I'm their first openly out person on the network. They just embraced it as much as I have and I think that's incredible. And my castmates were just like, “Of course you're gay! You're way too sensitive not to be!” [laughs] Fenuxe: How is “Color Splash: Miami” going? What can we expect coming up? Bromstad: I'm so proud of my team. It's so colorful and so different, and so not what you usually see at HGTV. We're taking the traditional and making it really vibrant and doing really interesting concepts, which is really fun. You're going to see a lot of different designs and different colors—more vibrant, more fabulous, really high-end stuff. Fenuxe: Fenuxe has themes for every issue, just like you weave a theme into the rooms you design. Why do you find that to be a successful approach and what do you get out of it? Bromstad: Because it becomes an environment instead of just a decorative space. When you make sure you're carrying an idea through and you're being consistent, it becomes such a really well-developed room. And what I get out of it? Pure satisfaction. [laughs] I do it for the after pictures, I do it for the homeowners, I just want America to look at my designs and go, “I never would have thought of that. How cool.” It's about inspiring people to use color that they're afraid of. Fenuxe: What's the biggest mistake someone can make when they want to redecorate? Bromstad: They just don't finish their idea, they don't finish their thought process. They might get stuck on a little thing like, “I need a chair here.” Well figure out your color scheme before you go in and buy things. People don't seem to do that. They go purchase by purchase.
Fenuxe: What are the hot colors right now? Bromstad: Purples and magentas are really, really hot right now and those are going to continue to be hot through the fall. Yellow is a really hot color this year. Turquoise is a really hot color this year, it was named color of the year by Pantone. We'll see through the pinks and the purples into next year and after that there will be another hot color. Then the cycle starts all over again! Fenuxe: Does that constant change spur on your creative energy? Bromstad: I love it! Change is necessary for the world to go around and for color and fashion and home, it just keeps evolving. If we didn't have any changes in colors then everything would look the same forever and it would be really boring and you wouldn't be inspired. Fenuxe: What's your favorite thing about designing? Is it the creative process? The final product? Helping people see what's possible? Bromstad: It's all of the above, it really is. I'm working with my team to create a really interesting and beautiful concept for the homeowner. We want to change their lives through design. And then since it's a television show, I'm doing it for my fans. It makes me equally excited too. Fenuxe: Are you used to being in the public eye? When people stop you on the street, what do they ask you for: a design tip, your autograph, or your phone number? Bromstad: All of the above. [laughs] No, it usually starts with a scream or an, “Oh my God, there's that color guy!” Am I used to it? I don't know if I could ever get used to it. I think it's a huge compliment. All my fans are so excited and so appreciative and always have good things to say. If it were the opposite where I was a hated character then I would think it would be awful, but right now I think it's pretty cool. Fenuxe: So do you have a longterm plan for your career? Bromstad: Yes, I would love to take over the world. [laughs] No, we're starting to develop the whole product and merchandising aspect of it and that's really exciting to me. That's part of the reason why I got into this business because I've always wanted a product line, I just didn't know how to go about doing it, ya know? And now it's finally starting to happen, so hopefully you'll see me in stores soon! FENUXEMAGAZINE

REDECORATIONS FASHION
VINTAGE OR MODERN? Neutrals or a color overdose? A few key pieces or accessories galore? You're left with a whirlwind of questions when the desire to redecorate your home grabs hold. But what are the latest trends in home decor fashion? Help is here in the form of Ryan Hughes, owner of R Hughes Showroom, a 4,000 square foot haven exclusively for the top architects and interior designers in Atlanta. Let's start in the kitchen. Striving for more than the simple, overused IKEA renovation? Keep one thing in mind: it's all about the details. Add touches like unique knobs, pulls, and finishes in your cabinet hardware. You'll be surprised how much difference it makes. As we pass through the kitchen, we notice the most intimidating overhaul is typically the largest—the living room. If you've got the space, Hughes suggests multiple seating and conversation areas to spice things up. Don't bother yourself with loads of accessories though. Just focus on a few key pieces that are striking—overscaled light fixtures are a hot item. And a sustained classic rule for the living room? “Good art is always a must,” Hughes says. If you're feeling let down in the bedroom—design-wise that is—you could take some cues from The W. “People are really into hotel chic,” says Hughes. Upholstered beds and headboards are a way to reflect the calm, serene environment without sacrificing style. Don't forget the bathroom, where we go back to basics. Currently, the hot look is vintage, vintage, vintage with a spa-like feel. “White marble is always a classic and never dated,” says Hughes. If you're thinking big picture when it comes to color, neutrals are out and vibrancy is back in. Just use the colors that make you feel most at home. Paint is an economic solution for your walls, but not the only trendy option out there. “Wall coverings are making a huge comeback and being used in fresh and exciting ways,” says Hughes.

TILL YOU DROP
hOW-tO VideOs have one fatal flaw—you can't
talk to them and ask questions. Unless you're 14 kinds of crazy. Luckily Home Depot has a whole slate of instore workshops to get you on the path to the perfect pad. Here's a sampling of free, one-hour workshops at the Midtown store. If you're living your life in the closet, why not make it a skoach more festive? Learn about decor coordination and function at the Storage and Closet Organization workshop (Aug. 28th @ 1PM). You can even learn how to design and install a closet all on your own. What is sure to draw a line out the door: Home Depot presents the Fall Face Lift workshop (Sept. 4th @ 10AM). You might be saying, “But I just got my face lift last year!” No worries, this is actually an interior and exterior painting class. Patching, prep, maintenance— all the tools and tricks to give your space a refresh and your mood a recharge. it's what we walk on all the time and can't do without— no, not your interns, your floor. Thankfully, there's a class for Decorative Flooring Solutions (Aug. 28th @ 11AM, Sept. 4th @ 11AM) to give you a jumpstart on the redo. There's a wide range of colors and textures so you can “floor” your visitors with style. When you see a workshop called Small Bath Updates (Aug. 28th @ 1PM), don't think it's just for little people. The updates are small and manageable. Replacing showerheads, faucets, sinks, toilets, and vanities are easier than you think, and the experts will show you how to do it safely.
eVENTS
Save Energy, Save Money (Sept. 4th @ 1PM). The answers are as simple as the name. Find out the easyto-install product and weatherizing options to lower those water and electricity bills and give you some extra cash to spend in the community. These drag queens aren't going to tip themselves, people!

n NIGHTLIFE
YOu CAN haVe a night out in Atlanta without losing
out on the comforts of home. Lounges and clubs with warm atmospheres, strong drinks, and comfy couches (minus the cat’s claw marks) dot the city. Ditch the remote and the Bon Bons and make it a night at one of these three fitting finds. Too often, “upscale” is just another word for “stuffy.” Park 75 Lounge & Terrace at The Four Seasons embodies the former without a hint of the latter. Seasonal cocktails are mixed behind the mahogany bar and delivered to you and your companion’s sofa as the pianist scores the night’s soundtrack. A move to the terrace brings a garden tranquility, with giant ficus trees sheltering you in teak furniture underneath the vibrant city sky. Amidst a typically straight Virginia-Highlands nightlife scene, in a turn-of-the-century building, through a random door, and up several flights of stairs lies a private club attracting the attention of some in-the-know gays. The Warren City Club is a members-only restaurant/lounge with a comfy, cozy main room awash in dark reds and browns, lit sparingly with the help of five fireplaces. Skyline views are a step away on the plush garden balcony, giving you full reign of the night at this reclusive nightspot.
X-PLORE
You can get it sweet or with a buzz at The Chocolate Bar in Decatur. The sweets come courtesy of the on-site chocolatier and the buzz arrives from the eager yet laid back bar staff. The vibe is about relaxation and celebrating the joys of some of life’s greatest indulgences—sugar and libations—in a warm, comforting environment. Exposed brick and dark wood surround you as the drinks are perfected. A Fenuxe favorite is the Mississippi Sidehand Martini with vanilla vodka, crème de cacao, and butterscotch schnapps. Slide in and stay awhile.

for your visit—this is the transcendent structure known as The Palace of Versailles. Stroll through the immaculate gardens with heavenly waterfalls, statues, groves, and canals—a little side project designed by Andre Le Notre that took 40 years to complete. If you’ve arrived before summer’s end, you’ll be lucky enough to witness the various musicals, concerts, and fireworks displays. Head for the central gallery for one of the most famous rooms in the world—The Hall of Mirrors. This is the inspiration you need to figure out what to do with your pesky spare room. This space is so sacred, French Prime Minister Clemenceau chose it as the spot to sign The Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I. 17 arches adorned with marble pilasters with gilded bronze capitals contain mirrors reflecting the 17 windows overlooking the garden. Each individual arch has 21 mirrors— that’s 357 pristine mirrors opening your mind to the potential for even more ideas for practical changes to your home.

Upon landing, leave Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport behind and hop on the RER for the train ride to VersaillesRive Gauche Station. A step off the train and there’s good news—your stay for the week is only 3 blocks from the station, and just about anything else worth seeing in Versailles. To Mercure Versailles Chateau! Take the cobblestone streets, round the corner and...well of course you’re staying in the hotel with the hot pink sign out front! It’s also a sign that you’re staying in gay-friendly confines. Located on the northern side of the park, this peaceful 60-room hotel has refined charm that wraps you into its fold immediately after you cross the threshold. Manager Laurent Ropars will greet you warmly as you enter the lobby then gracefully hand you over to the bellhop to guide you upstairs. Drop your things and head out! A mile from your hotel sits the center of France’s political power from the late 17th century to the late 18th century. After creation, additions, and restoration, the cost of this preeminent piece of French architecture has been estimated at over $2 billion in modern dollars. Half a million square feet large—that’s over five Wal-Marts to you American folks. The opulence, the grandeur, the reason
Louis XIV wanted a place at the palace to escape the rigidity of court life, so he built The Grand Trianon. It’s a single-story structure full of splendor yet cozy at the same time. The Grand Trianon is superbly proportioned, with multiple columns and regal pink marble adorning the exterior. Thousands of tuberoses and perennials fill the Trianon’s gardens, creating an overwhelming burst of fragrance which wafts through the architectural wonder. While many Queens resided at the Palace of Versailles throughout the years, none was more famous than Marie Antoinette. Just like Louis XIV, she desired a safe haven from the pomp of royal life—a desire exhibited by the simplicity and originality of the exterior of her chateau, The Petit Trianon. The interior is an intimate space, with mirrored panels that rise and lower as needed to obscure the windows. This was Antoinette’s place to call home. Enjoy the theater and a look inside the secrets of home decor shortcuts? Enter The Royal Opera. For all its stunning grace and magnificence, the marble-encased theater house is surprisingly faux marble—ordinary, albeit spectacular, wood carvings painted to resemble real marble. Shortcuts aside, the opera remains a stunning display of decadent decor and pitch-perfect acoustics. A burst out to the courtyard will leave you catching your breath as you continue to absorb all you’ve seen. You’ll stumble out of the front gates as you make your way down Rue Colbert with the Palace over your shoulder. Be inspired. Remember what you saw in Versailles. Rethink the placement of that sconce. Reconsider the layout you were dead-set on. Reimagine paint schemes. Start working on your palace away from the Palace of Versailles. FENUXEMAGAZINE

sterilitY Can maKe for an unhappy home. It can do likewise for an unhappy restaurant. When we want cozy, when we want loungy, when we don’t want to light up the grill and wash the dishes ourselves, we want Truva. The Mediterranean fusion hotspot’s main dining room sinks down a step, creating a needed separation from the bustle outside on Andrew Young International Boulevard. Home for the evening could be the creamcolored wraparound leather banquette, or maybe the booths bathed in orange and green. The banquette’s the choice if you’re feeling social, the booths if you want your own space.

Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Mix flour, salt, pepper, and coriander together. Dredge lamb shanks in mixture. Add cooking oil into medium-sized cooking pan. Sear lamb shanks, turning occasionally until lightly browned. Remove and transfer lamb into a roasting pan. Add celery, onions, and carrots to pan and saute. Add red wine, mint, and bay leaf. Reduce mixture by half. Add water and tomato paste and bring to boil. Pour mixture on top of lamb and loosely cover with foil. Ventilate with small hole and place in oven for 4 hours (or until internal temperature of lamb is 155 degrees). Remove shanks and strain au jus. Correct seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Who wants a drink? The wine list at Truva is simple and to the point, much like your wine list at home. But if nothing grabs you, the large, fully-stocked bar will. Fenuxe loves the cigar shaped meat pastry to start. No, seriously. It’s a hearty mixture of beef, lamb, and herbs in phyllo dough. A look at Truva’s entrees gives you the answer to why Mary had a little lamb—Truva apparently killed them all. From chops to shanks, roasted to stuffed, you get all the variations on lamb you can imagine. The shank beats them all. The lamb is tender as expected but the coriander and mint braising is the uncommon touch we look for. Like the rest of Truva’s entrees, the portions are HUGE so make room in the fridge for leftovers. Our favorite dessert is something we would never try in our kitchen—kazan dibi. It’s a rich, creamy flan-like dish with a cinammon bite. With the last bite you can lean back and keep relaxing because there are no dishes to do tonight. It’s a lovely night out at Truva, where you get the satisfying flavors you crave with an at-home appeal.
LABOR'S LOST LOVE IOR DESIGN
GAY MEN AND THE WORLD OF INTER
Gay men populate the fields of teaching, construction, medicine, real estate, and a whole host of other occupations along with the rest of the LGBT community and the straight community. But they tend to dominate other fields, like interior design. Or do they? With Labor Day approaching, it's a fitting time to look into what many gay men appear to consider a labor of love.
FENUXEMAGAZINE
25
Mild Guess “I don't know how you quantify that there are more gay designers than not,” says Taylor Yarbrough, an openly gay Atlanta interior designer and owner of G. Taylor Design + Consulting. Regardless, Yarbrough estimated a figure, saying that in his experience, the field has been “something like 2/3 women and 1/3 men, and of those men it was about 50/50 gay vs. straight.” Of course he pointed out that these are estimates with no scientific basis behind them, besides good old-fashioned gaydar of course. But that 50/50 figure is much higher than most estimates of the percentage of gay people in the general population, which usually varies between 10 and 20 percent. If you look into subgroups of the design world however, like residential vs. commercial, many in the field find a different result: higher percentages of straight men in commercial design. “The distinction there is accreditation versus nonaccreditation,” says Yarbrough. “For instance, if you go to the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center, it's predominantly gay. 80% of the work that comes out of there is residential.”
“
[Interior design] was innate in my character,” says Yarbrough. “I don't know if it had anything to do with me being gay or not.
”
Why would I trust a chef to remodel my kitchen? “With 10 years experience as a chef working for restaurants such as Pano’s & Paul’s and 14 years experience of home remodeling I have the knowledge to tailor a kitchen to fit your lifestyle.”

Design Star Vern Yip, Nate Berkus, Thom Filicia. Openly gay celebrity interior designers and decorators are scattered across the media landscape. David Bromstad is one of them. The host of HGTV's “Color Splash: Miami” gave his take on the topic to Fenuxe. “Most of the interior design guys that I've met are gay and if they're straight, they look and act gay!,” he says. Bromstad wavered however on whether gay men have a creative gene that leads them towards these professions. “There's a lot of gay people that don't have that gene but the ones that do really own it and really want to do what makes them happy on a daily basis,” he says.
The Next Shift Regardless of the presence of a creative gene or not, some just knew early on what they liked to do. Yarbrough says his choice in profession had little to do with the field being more welcoming to gay men. “It was innate in my character,” he says. “I don't know if it had anything to do with me being gay or not.” We will probably never know for certain. What we do know
is gay men populate the field of interior design, possibly to a large extent. With the passage of time and the fading away of prejudices, the stereotypes about certain jobs only being fit for certain groups of people will fade as well. Look at nursing, a field in which men previously got involved in only while on the battlefield. In the last 30 years however, male nurses are a common sight thanks to a shortage of nurses, better pay, and changing societal attitudes. And as those tides continue to shift across the entire workforce, our labors of love can all be celebrated without questions about why we love them in the first place.

REASONS TO REMODEL
1
YOU'RE NOT SELLING ANYTIME SOON
It's a buyer's market right now so, like a chicken-hawk at Outwrite, you're probably not going anywhere for a while. So make the most of it. Remodel now to get ready for the sale down the road. Increase your home's value and marketability.

REMODELING IS FUN
Looking at color swatches, deciding which appliance has more options, roaming the aisles of Home Depot—you're piecing together your dream home one choice at a time. Embrace the process and keep picturing that beautiful final product! 28

JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE no longer living in the closet doesn't mean you can't use a bigger one. A nice remodeling job works wonders for your space and your state of mind, but getting started is the hard part. Fenuxe gives you 7 reasons why you need to remodel NOW! LENDERS ARE LENDING... NO, REALLY
Sure, lending standards have risen but you're golden if you've got three things: proof of income, a good credit score, and at least 20 percent equity in your home. If so, go forth, find a great loan officer in the AGLCC member directory, and remodel!
MATERIALS ARE CHEAP
With the falloff in demand, you can get construction materials for cheaper than a lap dance from a girl at Swinging Richard's. And since less people are buying, there's more to go around, so there's no waiting around for just the right stuff.
CONTRACTORS ARE DISCOUNTING
See “Materials are Cheap” above. More contractors equals better, cheaper options for you. It's like that time French Connection accidentally over-ordered all those pea coats and you were all like “OMG!” and French Connection was all like “We know!”
GREEN IS GOOD
In addition to the warm and fuzzy feeling of doing a solid for Mother Earth, you can save money on your taxes (thanks to the energy efficiency tax credits) and your utility bills. Or you can skip the home and go full-on gay and buy a fuchsia smart car.
MAKE YOUR NEIGHBORS JEALOUS
Sure it's petty, but we all need a little confidence boost every now and then. Splurge for those granite countertops and extend that deck, then have a remodeled-housewarming party. Who says you can't keep up with the John and Jeff Joneses?

Dear Mary, I recently purchased my first home. It’s your standard loft in desperate need of a makeover so I want to redecorate to make it more modern and sophisticated. I don’t have the stereotypical eye for interior decorating like many gay guys. Can you lend your straight eye to this queer guy? Signed, Lofty Near Little Five If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail her at mary@fenuxe.com. Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.
Dear Lofty, Boy, do I feel your pain. Southern women, to a slightly lesser degree, are also expected to know how to beautify their surroundings. Personally, I feel my flawless physical appearance is enough, so I’ve never wasted much time with my nose stuck in a decorating book. I describe my home decor as tween girl meets alcoholic meets delusional Francophile—Twilight posters, empty liquor bottles displayed on shelves and posters of the Eiffel Tower cover most surfaces. Clearly, you’ve come to the right person for advice. If this doesn’t appeal to you (and I have no idea why it wouldn’t), may I suggest you survey your three best gay friends? I hate to further stereotypes, I really do, but odds are, one of them will know how to decorate. You can’t throw a rock in a gay bar without hitting an interior design major, and given the current economy, he’s probably an unemployed interior design major with unrequited creative energy oozing from his pores. Lure him to your loft with phrases like “practically a blank canvas,” “open to all your creative suggestions,” and “budget isn’t an issue.”
Love, Mary Makers-McMark 44
