FAsHIOn // Haute Halloween
IT’S THE ONE night of the year to act out your wildest fantasies—well,
one of the nights depending on who you are. But deciding on what to wear on All Hallows Eve can be more stressful than choosing a surrogate. We spoke to the managers of two of the city’s most popular costume shops, Jimmy Gough at Costumes, Etc. and Darlene Majewski at Norcostco, to find out what all the city’s boys and girls are stepping out in for Halloween 2010.
As expected, the True Blood and Twilight effect will be in full swing. “Twilight has totally changed the way people think about vampires,” says Gough. So whether it’s Bon Temps’ hottest vamp Eric or Twilight twinkwolf Jacob, expect to see some seriously sexy creatures on the prowl.
Switching to high maintenance (but a higher payoff), you can always dare to drag. Norcostco’s Majewski loves to watch the transformation. “It’s so sweet to see these boys walk in who are so shy and then they walk out 8-feet tall and wearing lashes,” she says.
Of course everyone’s always holding out for a hero, and this year will be no different. Iron Man, Thor, and Superman are huge this year if you judge by what the visitors to Costumes, Etc. are walking out with.
Another big pick this year is to go as the woman who treats every day like Halloween: Lady Gaga. The fashion daredevil gives you plenty to work with, whether you want to rock the bubble dress or the lobster hat. But for the big risk taker in the group, try the Halloween look with the shortest shelf life: “We haven’t had any requests for the meat dress yet,” says Majewski.
But who doesn’t like a half-naked undead guy? With the success of the annual Little 5 Points Zombie Walk and the buzz surrounding AMC’s upcoming locally filmed series The Walking Dead [see “AMC’s Southern Style Apocalypse” page 16], it’s official: there’s a zombie movement going on in Atlanta. And zombie life is low maintenance. “They’re great because they’re easy to do,” says Gough. “It’s just makeup and old clothes.”
14 FENUXE.COM
You can be political (Obama, Tea Party rally goer), you can honor celebrities who died this year (Rue McClanahan, Dixie Carter), you can go GTL in the ATL (Jersey Shore). Whatever you decide, go all out. Halloween in Atlanta is a time to embrace the bloodsucking, bullet-stopping, brain-eating, veal cutlet-covered queen inside all of us.

AMC'S SOUTHERN STYLE APOCALYPSE SHERIFF RICK GRIMES wakes up in an empty hospital after weeks in a coma. He stumbles out into the corridor to find the place in ruins. Hospital equipment tossed aside, the ceiling in tatters...and blood smears on the walls. He makes it outside to find hundreds of dead bodies lining the pavement. His family is missing. Everyone and everything is gone. A survivor tells him that the dead are walking among them. And if he wants to find his family, he needs to make it to one place: Atlanta. So goes the grim introduction to the epic new television series shot on location in Atlanta this past spring, The Walking Dead. The series premieres Halloween night at 10PM on AMC, a network with a record of groundbreaking shows including Mad Men and Breaking Bad. The Walking Dead is based on a popular graphic novel and is brought to the small screen by Frank Darabont, the Oscarnominated writer-director of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. The cast and crew made Atlanta their playground during shooting, so if you thought you saw zombies skulking around Grant Park or swarming a military tank downtown, you weren't mistaken. Local residents were recruited to fill the roles of the brain connoisseurs, and they were put through “zombie school” to learn the deadly (slow) moves. But the show isn't just about the blood and gore. The zombies are a terrifying backdrop to the main characters, a small group of survivors of the apocalypse who
16 FENUXE.COM
start to buckle under the pressure of fighting off death day after day. It's about survival, about holding on when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. It's about the fear of death. As actress Emma Bell, who plays the character of Amy, says in an AMC interview, “It's a story about love and humanity and community”— all themes that will resonate with gay audiences in particular. The graphic novel delves into gay territory, so gay storylines and characters might be in the works for the series as well. As one character says after learning that our fair city has (supposedly?) become a place of military protection, shelter, and food, “Atlanta seems like a good deal.” For the fan of survival stories and Halloween fright from the pros—or if you just want to spot all the Atlanta landmarks—The Walking Dead is a pretty damn good deal too. The Walking Dead series premiere Sunday, October 31st at 10PM ET on AMC

In ReVIeW// A Peculiar Tribe of People
“Macon knew it but Macon didn't talk about it.” “It” would be the sex life of Chester Burge, the scandalous, scheming central figure in Richard Jay Hutto's intriguing new true crime tale “A Peculiar Tribe of People.”
The book opens with the May 12, 1960 discovery of the body of socialite Chester Burge's wife Mary, found in her bed strangled and with a finger nearly ripped off. Chester meanwhile was at the local hospital recovering from a recent operation, but speculation soon centered on his role in the killing and weeks later he was officially charged with his wife's murder. It was the second charge however which blew the doors off middle Georgia's high society: Chester was also indicted for committing sodomy with his black chauffeur. Hutto goes on to describe in great detail the fascinatingly twisted life of Burge and those around him—often in too much detail. The book veers off onto so many branches of the family trees of Macon's upper echelon that it becomes confusing keeping everyone straight. The author also reverts to the first person, which wouldn't be problematic if it was done consistently, but Hutto utilizes it so randomly that it becomes a distraction. Other asides
and footnotes often seem to have no connection to the story. But otherwise, Hutto effectively packs the book with ample amounts of Southern drama. Chester's mother commits him to an insane asylum at 18 and later testifies against him at his murder trial. The Ku Klux Klan are mentioned in a possible connection to Mary Burge's murder. Family members file lawsuits against each other like it's tradition. But the heart of the story is Chester Burge, and he's no sympathetic closet case being framed for crimes due to his “deviant” lifestyle. He comes off as a famously conniving, hateful man. Worming his way into the will of a dying socialite, becoming a notorious slumlord, deviously seducing (or trying to seduce) every pretty young man in town—not the type of guy to take to your annual Halloween gala. But “A Peculiar Tribe of People” isn't about sympathy. It's a true story about when race, sexuality, power, and murder collide to force a Georgia town to face What Isn't Talked About—and to see who makes it out alive.
"A Peculiar Tribe of People" by Richard Jay Hutto was released this week through Globe Pequot Press

On THe LIsT of top shelf international destinations for the gays— London, Paris, Abiza—you don’t often run across Romania. But the storied Eastern European nation is sneaking up on people with its unique architecture, scenic beauty, and changing attitudes on sexuality. And some ties to a certain famous vampire haven’t hurt either. Your 12-hour flight across the Atlantic ends in the capital city of Bucharest, a bustling metropolis to settle into for the stay. The 4-star Le Boutique Hotel Moxa loves its’ gay guests and you’ll adore the avant garde design and ideal location in the city center. Day trips to roam the rest of Romania are a must, so plan your Bucharest agenda wisely if you’re only staying the week. For your culture fix, skip the National Museum of Contemporary Art—it’s housed behind armed guards in the Palace of Parliament and not worth the trip. Opt instead for the National Museum of Art of Romania in the former royal palace in Revolution Square. The works of modern Romanian artists mingle with those of international artists like Monet. Don’t miss the “Dracula, Voivode and Vampire” exhibition running now.

Continue your vamping with a day trip to Transylvania, the setting of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” The home most often linked to the famous fanged villian is Bran Castle, a spectacularly eerie 600-year old fortress with secret passageways and a dark, rich history. This place truly sucks. After your wits are scared back to Bucharest, lighten the mood with a gay night out at The Office. This crystal chandelier and black leather sofa laden gay club has the best beats that go bump-bump-bump in the night. Recover, re-energize and make the morning drive through rustic Romanian towns and villages to Mamaia, a gorgeous resort on a five-mile strip of pure white sand between Lake Siutghiol and the Black Sea. A casual beach stroll or a ride on the gondola will fill the day and before you know it, you’re back in Bucharest and ready for the trip home to Atlanta. The memories of the dark and dazzling display of artistic and cultural treasures hidden in Romania will stay with you. Especially those nights when an unfamiliar sound invades your sleep and images of Dracula’s quarters come flooding back into your mind...

After corn is grilled, cover entire cob in mayonnaise, sprinkle with cheese and dust with chile powder to taste. Squeeze lime on corn before eating, serving more wedges on the side if desired. This traditional Mexican dish can also be served off the cob, otherwise known as Esquite. Just cut the corn off the cob, serve in a bowl topped with mayonnaise, chile powder and cheese. Serves one.
DIA DE LOS MUERTOS
(“Day of the Dead”) is typically celebrated in Mexico on November 1 and 2nd, but the celebration goes on year-round in an industrial pocket on the west side of Midtown at Bone Garden Cantina. st
Bone Garden’s owners based the décor of their space entirely around the morbid yet joyous holiday. A mural full of dancing, boozing skeletons in what appears to be a hootenanny dominates the dining room, while the color of choice throughout seems awfully close to blood red. Halloween dinner anyone? You won’t be lacking for liquor. Choose from over 40 tequilas in the stocked bar along with the requisite Mexican and American beer selections. Spice up your beer of choice by making it a “Michelada”— pour it over ice in a salt-rimmed glass with hot sauce, spices, and a splash of fresh lime juice. Don’t be scared off by the tequila either. The tamarindo margarita is a refreshing standout. The tartness of the tamarind pulp mixes with El Jimador Reposado tequila, grand marnier, cointreau, and lime juice to deliver a supple blast of sabor fresco. It’s not a Mexican night out without cheese dip and, true to form, Bone Garden’s got their own deadly delicious spin on it. The
queso fundido is a bowl of melted Oaxaca cheese joined by grilled onions and bell peppers, chorizo, and fresh jalapenos. It’s spiced just right so get your fill. A la carte is the Bone Garden way, creating the perfect atmosphere for sharing—always a plus for dates or group visits. The choices are hard to narrow down but it’s a happy dilemma. The barbacoa de chivo taco jumped to the top of the list, with the tender, juicy goat topped off with onion, avocado, cilantro, and salsa verde. Make the adobo steak quesadilla a part of the feast as well, and add a side of nopalitos—where else will you get fresh sliced cactus? Dessert after a large Mexican meal isn’t advised, but if you must, sample the almond flan with a Mexican liqueur twist. It beats the typical sopapilla retread served at most Mexican haunts. What better company could you have around Halloween than the dancing dead, and what better place to join them than at Bone Garden Cantina?

Halloween is a celebration where the dead return to their earthly existence for one day, much like that Hugo Boss black pima cotton mock turtleneck you refuse to get rid of. Burning a candle inside a jack o’ lantern is said to keep demons, evil spirits, and middle school productions of “Fame” at bay. If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween night, don’t turn around because it may be Death itself. And by “Death” we mean “that ex who never gave you back your Williams-Sonoma measuring cup set.” You loved those damn cups. If a bat flies around your house three times, it’s considered a death omen. If a drag queen flies around your house three times, you obviously forgot to tip her last night. The tradition of giving candy out on Halloween was started as a 16th century socially acceptable chickenhawk courting gesture. According to polls, 48% of Americans believe in ghosts. However, only 7% of Americans believe you have a Robert Pattinson poster on your bedroom wall. I mean, seriously? 3.7% of Atlantans will be surprised when you dress up as a Disney princess for Halloween this year.

G ou s, Gob s & Gays: Why The LGBT Community Has Taken Over Halloween
30 FENUXE.COM
are packed with costume contests and big name DJs. House party hosts battle it out year after year for whose party is the grandest. We overtake Midtown dressed in our scariest and most scandalous. It's what lesbian scholar and poet Judy Grahn once called “the great gay holiday. Halloween. It's a holiday the straight community celebrates too, but often with less fanfare than the LGBT community does. Most of them treat it primarily as a day for the children. But we take it to another level, and it's not difficult to see the reasons why.
The Extreme & The Fantastical Halloween is about transformation. It's about stepping outside one's comfort zone and expanding boundaries. About not being afraid to step into another world. Who has more experience in such things than gay people? We're all veterans of the coming out process, some having less difficulty than others, but regardless we all know what it's like to embrace a side that might not be considered “normal” in some social circles. With a few hiccups along the way, the LGBT community is getting closer to acceptance every day. But our unique sexual orientation and/or gender identity does come with a certain outsider status. Whether we embrace this outsider role with begrudging acceptance or with total relish, the fact remains LGBT people are accustomed to being judged differently—and no night of the year has as many double-takes as Halloween.
Additionally, the LGBT community is desensitized to the act of cross-dressing and gender-bending. If we're not doing it ourselves, we're friends with those who do, or we're frequenting fundraisers or bars where it's happening. If you've lived in Atlanta for more than six months and still aren't comfortable around a man in a dress, it's time to turn in your gay card. So the desensitization allows for more experimentation come Halloween night.
Light Within The Darkness An ever-present thread running through Halloween is the theme of death. Ghosts, serial killers, zombies—the day is practically dedicated to making light of death and misfortune. The LGBT community has a unique ability to find humor in such misfortune, to pull a laugh out of the madness that may surround us.
Safety In Numbers
So many of us grew up being bullied and called “fag” or “dyke” on the playground. Oftentimes a quick wit was the best way to deal with such situations. We have to shake our heads and laugh at those outside our community who don't understand why we should get the same legal protections as them. Why we should be allowed to fight for our country without hiding who we are. A generation of gay men were surrounded by death every day due to the AIDS crisis. It's still rare for someone not to have at least one person in their social circle who is HIV positive.
The holiday also serves a practical purpose for an often-overlooked segment—the transgender community.
“If you don't laugh, you'll cry” is the old saying. If we weren't able to laugh at all that lunacy, we'd go insane. Halloween is a natural extension of our propensity to find the light within all the darkness.
All Hallows Eve is also a night for taking things over the top, and nobody's better at the extreme and the fantastical than the gays. One look around at Pride a few weeks back will attest to that. It's a lesson Lady Gaga has mastered to help cement her status as an obscenely rich worldwide icon—an icon you'll see many of us dressed up as on the 31st.
Dressing up in drag for Halloween serves no other purpose than getting a good laugh for anyone else, but it can be a lifeline for trans people, in particular those who are closeted. Historically, it's been the one night of the year a trans person can feel safe being who they are.
Halloween is upon us. So we roleplay. We camp it up. We take it farther than anyone else. We utilize our inherent capacity to have fun. We say, “You think we're freaks? Well, get a load of this.”

Dear Mary, Halloween is always a huge event so I'm looking for costume ideas. I'll be going to a party and then maybe hitting the bars. I need something that's versatile (heh...), unique, and memorable. Should I just wear an open button-down, put glitter on my chest and call myself a character from Twilight? Sincerely, Stumped on Spring Street
Dear Stumped, As someone who has actually read Twilight, let me just put this out there: you’re making some big assumptions if you go that route. Do you have any idea how many times Steph Myers describes Edward as being “carved from stone?” Like, a million. So the question, of course, is do you look like you were carved from alabaster stone when you take your shirt off? If you have even a moment’s hesitation in your response, the answer is no, and you need to go a less demanding route. Which obviously brings me to Santa Claus. Come on, it’s perfect! All night long, strangers will sit on your lap and tell you they’ve been naughty. I learned this trick as I was sitting on some guy's lap at a Halloween party telling him I’d been naughty before realizing I’d very neatly fallen into his trap—I then watched 50 other girls do the same damn thing. Yes, it’s brilliant. You’re welcome.
If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail her at mary@fenuxe.com. Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.
