Jake Shears calls us as he’s driving down I-5 from L.A. to San Diego, just hours from opening up for the biggest pop star in the world. He and his band, Scissor Sisters, are closing out the West Coast swing of Lady Gaga’s never ending Monster Ball Tour. “It’s been pretty incredible,” he tells Fenuxe. “I’m kind of sad it’s coming to a close.” The band moves back to headliner status with a trek through the South bringing them through Atlanta on Friday, April 8 for a show at The Tabernacle. It’ll be a double-dose of Shears as he comes to Outwrite Bookstore with photographer Tim Hailand the afternoon of the show to discuss Hailand’s book One Day in the Life of Jake Shears. Shears opens up to Fenuxe about why he strips down onstage, what makes him feel worthless, vanity and what’s next for Scissor Sisters.

Fenuxe: Jake, tell me how you got involved in the “One Day in the Life of...” project with photographer Tim Hailand. Jake Shears: Well, Tim’s an old friend of mine. He originally shot me for a “Day in the Life” piece for VMAN a few years ago. He’s just super talented and such a great guy and very ambitious and I’m super happy with it. It’s such a cool thing to have. Fenuxe: This was a friend of yours shooting you, so there’s a level of trust there, but at the same time you’re still opening yourself up. Were you nervous about letting people get that intimate of a look into your life?

14

FENUXE.COM

Shears: Oh God, no [laughs]. No, not at all. You know, the trust is there and I’m super comfortable with him. I definitely have an element of privacy I like to keep in my life, but I’m an 85% open person and so no, I don’t get really uncomfortable. Like for instance, if you’re ever in my dressing room, I don’t care if there’s guests around, I don’t care if somebody’s mom is in there – if I’m changing my clothes I’m gonna get naked. And that’s just the way it goes. I’m not really ashamed of anything. I don’t mind having my picture taken. Although, I don’t consider myself a very photogenic person. Fenuxe: Really? Shears: Some people might think that I’m vain and I’m definitely…umm, I’m definitely not a vain person. [Shears asks a passenger in the car, “What would you say? I’m not vain, but what would I be?”]. Sorry, I’m asking my trainer here. [Trainer responds, “I would say you’re not vain but like…you wanna look good.”] I wanna look good, but I’m not scared of looking ugly.

Fenuxe: Wait, you’re asking your trainer whether you’re vain or not?

time. So it’s got its practical reasons too and that’s kind of how it’s always been.

Shears: [laughs] But no no, I’m a really super athletic performer and very sweaty and I’ve got buggy eyes and my veins pop out of my head and you know, if you’re taking pictures of me performing I look very frightening sometimes. So I don’t think I’m a photogenic person but it doesn’t really bother me.

I guess the older I get the slower I’ll go onstage, so you never know. I guess Morrissey’s still pulling his shirt off though. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing [laughs]. But I hope to be doing this for a long time.

Fenuxe: So you talk about the energy and the workout you get during shows, plus you also have your hands in so many different projects. In the foreword to the book, Elton John calls it the “Energizer Bunny in your DNA.” What is it that motivates you?

Shears: We’ve been writing new songs when we can, a little bit on the road. We’ve got some new stuff I really love. I think we’re going to pop out some new music pretty fast. I don’t think it’s going to take as long as it has in the past, which I’m really excited about. Also we’re in an age now where you can be more experimental with the way you release things and you don’t necessarily have to do everything by the book anymore, which is kind of exciting and a bit freeing. So who knows how we’ll be releasing music?

Shears: I’ve just always got dreams upon dreams of creative things I’ve always wanted to do and things that I’ve wanted to achieve, and I love working. So I try as hard as I can to live a laid back life but I’m not very successful at it. I just love working. And even though I get worn out and frazzled, if I’m not working on something I feel worthless. Performing makes me really happy. I’m happy that I’m somebody that can do things on either side, because I love writing in general, and I love performing and I think that I’m pretty good at both. So it’s nice to be able to jump back and forth between things. Fenuxe: During shows, you gradually strip down to where by the end, you’re in next-tonothing. Is that an exposure thing? Is it about shedding your skin as the show goes on? Shears: I do love wearing super skintight stuff. I like feeling like I don’t have shit hanging off of me. I also get super overheated – I get really really hot. And I know the day is going to come where I’m, you know, I’m going to collapse at some point. I mean, I also love feeling sexy, I’m definitely an exhibitionist and whatnot. But it’s kind of a 50-50 thing. I just get dripping wet and I need to cool off half the

Fenuxe: So what’s next for Scissor Sisters?

Fenuxe: Well we’re looking forward to the Outwrite appearance and the show at The Tabernacle. The show last August was definitely a highlight. Shears: Oh that was so fun! That show was crazy. The band still talks about it. There was some like, 90-year-old woman like right up front who I think like passed out and had to get carried away. It was bonkers! All of our family was there. I had my mom and dad, and tons of my relatives were there. Babydaddy had tons of family there. So it was a pretty big crew. It was a really fun show so I can’t wait to come back. All In The Presentation

By Cliff Bostock

REMEMBER THE WAY it used to be? You dined in a gigantic space that could be a grand opera set. When your black-clad server dramatically placed your entrée on the table, you looked down to behold a hybrid life form. The meat was twisted unnaturally and set atop a mysterious puree. That was in turn topped by shiny vegetation. Piercing the surface was a pointless sprig of rosemary. The amoebashaped plate was further scattered with microgreens and painted with two livid oils. Those days are mainly over. At their best, such “fusion” plates provided adventure, but their layered construction and spices often muddled flavors. Now, in part because of the depressed economy, diners want comfort more than theatricality. And because of the “green” movement, they want food that’s not radically distorted by factory farming and kitchen tricks. This has inspired what’s called “modernist cuisine,” as Anne Quatrano of Bacchanalia says. Favored ingredients are seasonal, local and organic. So, Quatrano likes “simple white plates arranged with natural ingredients with pure flavors in slightly modified forms.” There’s a bit of comforting nostalgia in such an approach. Paul Luna of Lunacy Black Market creates still-popular small plates that look comfortingly rustic and are magically alive with flavors.

CLIFF BOSTOCK

“I’m a fan of creativity,” he says. “But more ingredients on a plate do not translate to creativity. Also, ‘wow-factor’ doesn’t translate to creativity either.” A recent example of “wow-factor,” Luna says, is the rococo toppings now smothering the natural flavor and look of hamburgers. “Why introduce a ton of shit to a perfectly good dish?” Ron Eyester of Rosebud agrees. He likes to “deconstruct” recipes, separating out the flavors and textures. This allows “the guest to taste the components of the meal in various orders.” Unlike Quatrano, Eyester does like unique, oversized and colorful plates. Hector Santiago of Pura Vida likes his small plates to “look as if they were crafted with care and precision but not rigid and fixed like in the nouvelle cuisine days.” So, if you want to eat fashionably, ditch the culinary bling and go with simplicity that highlights natural form.

But the national childhood hunger non-profit Share Our Strength is offering just such a chance on April 14 at the Georgia Aquarium as they present the 23rd Annual Taste of the Nation.

As attendees enter the Aquarium, they’ll come face-to-face with Atlanta’s elite chefs preparing gourmet samplings from their menus. Fans of Top Chef and Iron Chef America will be happy to see Kevin Gillespie (Woodfire Grill) and Kevin Rathbun (Rathbun’s, Kevin Rathbun Steak, Krog Bar) working their magic. Veni Vidi Vici, Table 1280, Nava, Dogwood, Canoe, Nan, The Livingston, MARKET, 4th & Swift – all will be represented by their executive chefs. And they won’t be microwaving last week’s leftover veal scallopini. “They’re not phoning it in on this event,” says Allison Palestrini, Southeastern Director of Share Our Strength. “They really bring some amazing food items.” In a unique twist, Taste of the Nation attendees will be eating to end hunger. 100% of the net proceeds from the event go to help fund Share Our Strength’s national No Kid Hungry Campaign as well as local organizations like the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Genesis Shelter.

“I just have so much respect for the people that put this thing together and really make it happen,” says Taste of the Nation veteran Scott Serpas, executive chef and owner of Serpas in the Old Fourth Ward. “There’s a lot of people out there that are really suffering and really need us – especially in the last couple of years with the economy the way it is,” he says. “So it’s a good way to give back.” The night will also include a wine tasting, live entertainment and both live and silent auctions so there’s ample opportunity for a glitzy gay night out. “Anyone who would be interested in coming, just bring your appetite and be ready to have a great night,” says Palestrini. Bar Food Finds SOMe MIGhT ThInk eating food at a gay bar is about as

common as a drag queen in overalls. But a surprising number of our local watering holes offer up delicious grub. Is it the typical bar fare experience or is it done with a flourish like a gay establishment should? Fenuxe took a peak inside the kitchens of your favorite night spots.

The lowdown: Burgers, sandwiches, salads and “wedgies” (a sandwich on a pizza crust) sure to suit any hungry sports fan. Bonus Points: Sports-related names for courses, like “Pre-Game Warm-Up” for appetizers and “On the Green” for salads. The Gay Touch: The ever popular “More Meat Than You Can

Blake’s

The lowdown: Burgers, sandwiches, wraps and apps. The little-known breakfast menu is a must see. Bonus Points: The Blue Plate Special’s price is listed as “Cheap. Just Like Your Favorite Man.” The Gay Touch: The design of the menu is gayer than a frosted tips convention hosted by Lance Bass.

Burkhart’s

The lowdown: A select group of menu items all done well. Salads, sandwiches, wings, burgers and seafood. Bonus Points: Their New York strip is a community favorite. Also they’re the only gay bar with surf and turf on the menu. The Gay Touch: Their cheesecake comes with a fruit topping... okay it’s a stretch, get off our backs.

The TWO Chefs THE ATLANTA RESTAURANT

scene is a hyper-competitive, cutthroat world full of chefs angling to get on top and stay there for as long as possible. But every now and then, two chefs bond over their shared passion and make a deeper connection. And sometimes, two chefs – like Murphy’s head pastry chef Nick BowanCrawford (above standing) and Parish’s head pastry chef Derek Van Cleve (above sitting) – take it to another level and decide to spend the rest of their lives together.

They met, appropriately enough, in the kitchen. It was four years ago and Derek was interning at Luckie Food Lounge when Nick came in as a consultant. The connection was instant. Nick says they started dating a few days after they met, but Derek remembers it a bit differently. “It was in a matter of hours pretty much [laughs],” he says. Their professional paths veered after Luckie, but their relationship only got stronger, spurred on by a mutual respect and understanding of the demands of the industry they’d chosen. “It’s a really difficult industry to be in,” says Nick. “The hours are demanding, you’re always working holidays.” Having someone alongside for the ride eases the burden. So what about having too many cooks in the kitchen at their Grant Park home? Not even the

22 FENUXE.COM

slightest bit of competition? “When we’re at home, we’re not competing about who cooks the better dinner, it’s about who washes the dishes,” Nick says laughing. “That’s what the arguments are about.” There will be plenty of dishes to do in the future now that they’re engaged – Derek proposed to Nick last December at Two Urban Licks. After a ceremony on the West Coast and a reception back in Atlanta, they’ll continue planning for their next goal – opening up their own restaurant together. “The ultimate goal is for us to be able to collaborate together again the way we did at Luckie,” says Derek. From one kitchen to another, creating food and a life together as they’ve always dreamed.

A

Delicacy Situation

One of the

luxuries of traveling to other countries is getting a taste of the local culture. And after you get done visiting their gay bar, you get to try their culinary delicacies. So let’s scour the world together to find the most exotic foods across six different continents.

We start in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, where the weather is cold and the seals are dinner. Much like our tradition of apple pie, except not at all, the good people of Newfoundland go crazy for flipper pie. It’s a dish made of seal flippers, carrots and turnips blended in thick gravy. Heading south to Peru, you’ll find the Christmas dinner rituals are slightly different from ours. Instead of a plump, juicy turkey on the platter in the center of the table, Peruvians dig into the Christmas guinea pig. If you cross the Atlantic and ask a waiter in Morocco for some blue cheese on your wedge salad, you might get a quizzical look. But ask them for goat dung oil instead and you’ll be squared away. Goats eat the fruits of the argan tree and excrete the nuts, which are then washed and roasted to get the oil. Those sexy Italians don’t have any weird, exotic culinary quirks, except for maggot cheese. The fly deposits its eggs on the cheese, the eggs turn into maggots and excrete their enzymes and

24 FENUXE.COM

badabing! You got yourself some fresh maggot cheese. If you’re looking for a high protein, low fat meat to consume (or if you just really hate the Crocodile Dundee franchise), go to Australia and kill a kangaroo. It’s known for being a tender, flavorful meat. All those hot Australian surfer boys didn’t get their bods eating burgers after all! Asia always gets a bad rap for having bizarre delicacies and it’s undeserved. They have many simple dishes – Did somebody say rooster testicles?! Taiwan wins this battle of exotic foods. Rooster testicles are larger than you would imagine, if one were to spend their time contemplating the nut size of barnyard animals. They’re even known to increase male fertility and stamina. So just remember – if you meet a hot guy in Taiwan with an insatiable sex drive, it’s not the Viagra. It’s the rooster testicle.

You didn't really think we would stick with a one page Eats section did you? No no no, you deserve better for our first annual Food Issue. You deserve a supersized version of Eats filled with pages of profiles on select Atlanta restaurants. Some restaurants are new kids on the block and some are popular veterans of the city's dining scene – one has even been around since before Rock Hudson was every woman's fantasy. Some you might not have noticed and one you pass by several times a week without going in – and we'll tell you why you should. From contemporary southern to classic southern to Thai to Italian to Mexican to a flat-out killer steak – we've got you covered. You'll also find out how pricey, how organic and how gay each spot is. And just because a restaurant scores low on the gay quotient doesn't mean you should pass it up – sometimes we all need a break from the scene. So without further ado – and in no particular order – here's Fenuxe's Restaurant Roundup.

Parish Part market, part restaurant and all class. This Inman Park eatery popular with the gays serves up Southern inspired dishes with a modern spin. Hit up the market for their delectable pastries, coffees, juices, sandwiches and salads. The upstairs opens for a supper highlighted by cast iron mountain trout and the Coca-Cola braised shortribs. And don’t miss the vegeterian fave Bella’s omelette at the weekend brunch.

Parish gets high grades for décor and ambience thanks to classic touches like red murano chandeliers and antique Parisian sconces. And they drove their gay quotient up a notch by hosting a recent Big Gay Supper Club dinner and incorporating a drag show into another recent event. A cute staff doesn’t hurt either. Parish won’t be perishing anytime soon in our book.

No Mas is in a deceptively large space with vibrant purples, golds and reds mixed among your occasional lush greenery. It’s like being in an upscale Tijuana cantina, except without the threat of getting kidnapped by drug lords. It’s a must-have experience to knock back one of their signature margaritas on the patio along with their killer salsa and a burrito or five. No Mas loves its gays, too. If you haven’t got one of their $5 off bracelets from the Pride parade sitting around the house somewhere, you’re probably straight.

Restaurant To Consider Marriage Between A Man & A Cinnamon Roll

4th & Swift The new hotspot for Sunday brunch is in the Old 4th Ward. It’s a farm-to-table delight that marries your traditional brunch with the southern fried instincts of chef/owner Jay Swift. A basket of biscuits and muffins is the starter of choice highlighted by cinnamon rolls so gooey and moist you almost need a spoon to eat them. The “red flannel” hash is a winner of an entree, with a 48-hour brisket laid atop a bed of fresh beets and fingerlings and topped with a fried farm egg. Oh hells yes. On-point servers work well as a team as they navigate the clean, white warehouse-style industrial space with a gorgeous bar anchoring the center. The gays who brunch are heading to 4th & Swift.

Restaurant Worth Selling Your P'Town Timeshare For

BLT Steak BLT Steak is all class. The upscale steakhouse in the lobby of The W Downtown has got a classic charm with a steady eye on the future of fine dining. Deep, dark woods dominate the wide open floor plan including ample seating with room to stretch out and breathe. Servers buzz about in a cool, calm manner bringing out dish after dish. But we must get to the meat of the matter and that’s their naturally aged beef. The filet and New York strip topped with herb butter will make you forget your own name. The brussel sprouts and chestnuts come with bacon and are a wise side choice. You’ll spot the occasional gay couple or staff member at BLT but don’t expect a game of Crazy Bitch Bingo to break out.

Pricci Pricci is Italian to its very core. They’ve even got a Milan native at the helm in executive chef Piero Premoli, who makes regular visits to the home country for the latest finds and brings them back to Pricci to keep the food red, white and green.

STATs Price

The much-heralded Buckhead spot has a playful, flashy atmosphere perfect for a Friday night with the boys before the Midtown roam. The open kitchen gives a nice glimpse into what’s to come. Pricci’s menu is diverse yet precise. They know you don’t have to say a lot to get your point across. And the point is a modern take on the classic Italian dishes you know and love – think prosciutto with summer melon, yellow fin tuna carpaccio or beef short rib ravioli. Don’t forgetaboudit.

Restaurant That Started All This Burger Crap

Flip Burger Burger “boutiques” have become a

four-letter word lately. Yeah. Five. Farm. But it all goes back to the one that started it all – Flip. Richard Blais’ concept captured all the buzz after its 2008 debut off Howell Mill on the Westside. A Buckhead location recently followed, and while the buzz has leveled off, the impact hasn’t. Yes there’s the liquid nitrogen Krispy Kreme milkshakes and buffalo sweetbreads with blue cheese foam, but the essence of Flip is still the burger, and they’re among the best in the city at it.

The pimento cheeseburger is a gluttenous gift to burgerdom and the lamb burger with goat cheese and citrus yogurt is always a welcome treat. With hot décor and a welcome home for its gay clientele, Flip will continue to serve up the goods for a welcome audience for some time to come.

Floataway Cafe If you see confused, old white people with

canes and walkers wandering around a parking lot on Zonolite Road after 5PM, they’re bound to be looking for Floataway Cafe. We could base the restaurant’s inclusion on this list solely on the entertainment value it brings to the Fenuxe team, but we won’t. It happens to be a killer restaurant. Floataway gives off a bit of an oasis feel once you manage to find it. Everything is bright, calm and cool inside and the view of a quiet rustling forest just adds to the serenity. The menu is about constant change – whatever is freshest and in-season while reflecting a European flair makes it to your table that night. The pizza and pasta are always a hit, but don’t forget the wood oven roasted Georgia white shrimp. If you can find the place.

Restaurant That Made You Book A Trip For Thailand Pride

Nan When you remember how beautiful a restaurant’s bathrooms are, it’s usually a good sign about the rest of the place. And Nan has some gorgeous bathrooms. The top-notch Thai restaurant at 17th and Spring has beauty to go around, from the elegant space, to the staff, to the presentation of the food. Oh yeah, the food. Nan is high-end Thai worth every baht. The smooth masaman curry with tender beef short ribs and the panang chicken curry will make you weep. Pair either with Nan’s brilliant mango mai-tai and you’re set. If you value authenticity in your Thai food, class in the way it’s presented and have a special occasion to celebrate (like a Wednesday), Nan is your place right in the heart of the Midtown playground.

Tea

Party Photo By Dan Lax

Time! Everyone celebrates the beginning of spring in different ways. Some clean their homes. Some O.D. on Claritin. But gay people in Atlanta? We have a tea dance. And we can thank Joining Hearts for it, as they present The 2011 Change of Seasons Tea Dance on April 14 at The Georgian Terrace Hotel.

This is Joining Hearts’ third year putting on the event, which has moved to a larger space each year from Amsterdam in 2009 to Shout last year and now to The Georgian Terrace. The money raised goes to the organization’s larger mission of providing housing support to those in Atlanta living with HIV/AIDS.

Change of Seasons slowly faded away soon afterwards but was not forgotten. Joining Hearts resurrected it as a Sunday Tea Dance and fundraiser and it’s now a vital member of the organization’s slate of six annual fundraisers.

But Joining Hearts wasn’t the originator of the Change of Seasons party. It began in 1998 when local man Glen Kinnard came up with the idea to create an event celebrating the arrival of spring, mirroring the White Party in Palm Springs.

Resident DJs Mike Pope and David Knapp will be back for the latest version of the party. The Joining Hearts team is excited to be at The Georgian Terrace. “The architecture of the grand ballroom and outdoor terraces create the perfect setting for what we expect to be a fun filled event,” says Loftis.

Word quickly spread and visitors came from around the southeast for the annual bash. Change of Seasons veterans are quick to cite the party in 2000 as the pinnacle. It was held on the top parking deck of the Nike Pavilion and featured DJ David Knapp with a performance by Martha Wash.

Change of Seasons will give everyone a taste of what’s in store for one of gay Atlanta’s most talked about events of the year – the Joining Hearts pool party at Piedmont Park Pool on July 23. But until then, we can toast the new season by dancing the day away at The Georgian Terrace.

“At the height of the party, a very fine mist of rain started coming down to cool the crowd off and created one of those surreal moments that everyone talks about to this day,” says Joining Hearts president Kerry Loftis.

Joining Hearts Presents The 2011 Change of Seasons Tea Dance Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 4PM-9PM The Georgian Terrace Hotel $20 in advance/$25 at the door Tickets available at www.joininghearts.org

Leo

March 20 - April 19 Slow down and appreciate the experience, whether it is a fine meal or a fine wine. And don’t forget to be thankful for your fine companion as well.

Taurus Many are the times you have said you would “see to that.” Well now is the time to finish this chore.

The secret to buying a good wine is not in the price or even the label. It’s what your taste buds tell you. Drink responsibly and buy accordingly.

Virgo Use hot spices to combat your spring allergies while picnicking in Piedmont Park. Think habanero on those wings.

Sagittarius Compatibility doesn’t just reveal your relationship with others. It reveals your relationship with yourself. What have you done for you lately?

Capricorn Use your imagination to discover the hidden meaning behind your dreams about you know who. Delve deep, so to speak.

Libra Gemini Get off the scale and get on the treadmill. You won’t burn calories staring at that spinning dial.

Food is like friends. Even though some are not so good for you, most are worth the heartache once in a while…Pepcid, please.

Aquarius Chocolate is best consumed with others and strawberries are in season. Throw a fondu party!

SCORPIO

Cancer Time to clean out the pantry of all those old herbs and spices. Fresh is best.

Time to back down off the extra effort for a while. Your journey’s end is approaching and you will need to be energetic for the rewards.

Pisces Stand your ground firmly. You’re doing great. Don’t let Ben OR Jerry lead you from your goal.

Dear Mary, I’ve got this great new friend I met at the dog park. I love hanging out with him but not when it involves eating. He chews with his mouth open. It’s worse when he laughs – I almost brought a tarp with me to Joe’s last week. We just started hanging out so I don’t feel comfortable addressing it yet. How soon before you can tell a new friend he’s making you sick? Signed,

Covered Up in Candler Park

Dear Cover Up, Wow, he sounds really charming. What a prince. You could chalk this up to “we all have quirks” or whatever, but I think this is begging for some social experimentation. He needs to get back what he’s giving. Suggest a picnic in the park and pack yourself an egg salad sandwich, mimic his table manners, and see what happens. Or drag him out to eat somewhere where he would be forced to eat in front of a mirror…like maybe have a picnic in the crazy mirror room in a funhouse at the fair. Can you imagine his overflowing, wide open mouth reflected all bendy and blown up in 300 or so mirrors? I secretly suspect this is a beauty-and-the-beast situation, and he must find someone to be his friend in spite of the fact that no one could ever possibly stomach sharing a meal with him; when he does, the curse will break and he will transform into the prince he actually is. The next time you see your new friend, ask him flat out: what, exactly, are the parameters the evil magic queen put on your curse and/or just how hot were you before you unknowingly insulted her? Yeah, that sounds like a good way to start a conversation.
