ediTor’s noTe When We launChed Fenuxe one year ago we never could have dreamed of what was to come. This year has been the most exciting, challenging and beneficial year for all of us. Thank you for your support and contributions this year. Fenuxe Magazine is an evolving entity where change is natural and expected. When done thoughtfully and methodically, change can be exciting and refreshing. So with the creation of our twenty-seventh issue, and the first issue of our second year, we listened to you and made some great changes! One of those exciting changes is the addition of Ultra - Atlanta’s new Nightlife Guide: Beyond the ordinary. In addition to our regular run
of interviews, fashion tips, travel columns and food reviews, we give you this portion of the magazine completely devoted to in-depth nightlife coverage. Ultra has more pictures of you and your friends out around town. It has a thorough run down of happenings on any given night of the week. It also lists the best parties and events to attend. One of the best new additions is a much more useful and interactive map for visitors and locals alike. Thank you for being a part of our lives this year. We look forward to sharing many more with you.

Can you believe it’s already
been one year? They say time flies when you’re having fun and it must be true, because this year has gone by in a flash! If I have learned anything this year it is the fact I have the best staff in the world. I am so proud of them – and they work tirelessly to provide a magazine worthy of Atlanta’s gay community. I often get asked three questions: Why did you start a magazine, Why did you start a gay magazine, and the third is almost always, What’s up with the name Fenuxe? Magazines are very special – they fill us with joy, amazement, excitement and allow you to take a break in this crazy chaotic world in which we live. They are full of love and care and when you open the cover of a magazine it loves you back. Magazine readership is growing and it’s still the number one medium for getting consumers to act (yes, even better than the Internet!) But why a gay magazine? This is my community – and my passion. I grew up here...well, if you can count Gwinnett as here. We have one goal as a company – to build a
sense of our community and culture throughout Atlanta and beyond. I believe that the backbone of every community is its independent business owners and artists. They’re the ones who fuel our local economy, create vibrancy and instigate change. With this idea in mind, Fenuxe is the vehicle that allows every local gay owned and gay-friendly business to market their goods or services to a diverse community of loyal readers. I can’t thank the business community enough for their strong support. Over this past year Fenuxe has helped develop, support and encourage the community we love, and it is our hope that we will do so for many years to come. So, what’s up with the name Fenuxe? We’ve heard everything from “Fenooocksee”and “Fenwah” to “Fenough” and “Fenzune” and you know what – I admit, we do have a unique name, but being gay is in and of itself unique and special. Just like our name, each member of our community is unique and different. Fenuxe (aka Phoenix) is an acronym and it stands for Fashion, Events, Nightlife, Urban Culture, X-plore (Travel) and Eats (Dining), but it’s much more than that. With the recent 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Atlanta remembers its storied past as it was
“Fenuxe is a symbol of our community – constantly evolving, changing and growing."
burned to the ground and from those ashes, a new city was born. This is why Atlanta’s crest bears the noble Phoenix bird – a mythological creature of great beauty that is reborn from its ashes. Fenuxe is a symbol of our community – constantly evolving, changing and growing. We pour our hearts into every page ensuring that you have a beautiful magazine that you are proud to hold and read. As human beings we’re only given one chance in life to make a difference. This is my challenge to you – don’t be consumed with apathy. We’ve come a long way since the first Pride march in Atlanta 40 years ago, but we’re still not there yet. Putting an HRC sticker on your bumper is great – but it doesn’t make you a community activist or an active participant of the community. Being an active participant means that you positively represent our community each and every day – at work or at play. We still live in a state that refuses to see us as equal human beings. I still live in a city where there are places I feel afraid to hold my partner’s hand walking down the street. This must change and it starts with you. Atlanta has one of the biggest gay populations in the country and yet our community is still very segregated. How well do you know your fellow gay brothers and sisters? How often do
you go out of your way to connect with someone who may not look or act just like you? We only have strength in numbers and power only comes when we stand together as one. We are able to publish Fenuxe today because of what many of you have done in the past. We stand on your shoulders – you who have protected our community, fought for our rights and instigated change for the past 40 years. We honor your sacrifices and your willingness to stand up for what is right and we follow in your footsteps. Now is the time to finish what they started, pick up the torch and make the flame brighter and hotter than ever before. I personally invite each and every one of you to The Fire Party – our one year anniversary celebration at the beautiful Bill Lowe Art Gallery on April 29th. Thank you Atlanta for an amazing first year and a toast to many more to come!

Meet Team Fenuxe IF we trIeD to include the names of everybody who helps make Fenuxe possible, it would take more than a hundred pages. So we’re taking this opportunity to give you a glimpse into the core Fenuxe team. We will see all of you around town through 2011 and for years to come! Tyler Calkins, pUBLIsHer As publisher, Tyler oversees the Fenuxe operation as well as takes a hands-on role in planning our multiple events throughout the year. He loves to get outdoors and hike or rollerblade, listen to Beyoncé and clean his house with some gospel music on full blast. Raising $6,000 for AID Atlanta at the Best Bachelor Party has been his most rewarding Fenuxe moment and he can’t wait to continue helping the community through future events.
William duffee-braun, eDItOr William is Fenuxe’s jack of all trades, from building business, to revising editorial, to distributing the magazine and planning our next big event. He’s a major Madonna fan with a special place in his heart for Piedmont Park – and for the publisher of Fenuxe. William’s most rewarding moment at Fenuxe was marching in the Atlanta Pride parade and celebrating with 200,000 fellow members of the LGBT community.
Christopher barker, GrapHIC art DIreCtOr Chris creates the visual element of Fenuxe. This faithful “Gleek” loves Atlanta’s restaurant scene and is never far from his favorite music, be it Janelle Monae, Adele or John Legend. Chris vividly remembers the day the first issue of Fenuxe arrived and the staff flipped through the pages in silence, amazed that the hard work had materialized into something tangible that would soon be all over Atlanta.
Patrick saunders, seNIOr wrIter Patrick writes the majority of the content in Fenuxe and coordinates with other fresh voices who contribute to the magazine. The Atlanta native loves going to Falcons games and hitting the city’s restaurants with his friends. His most memorable moments at Fenuxe were interviewing Bishop Gene Robinson and marching in the Atlanta Pride parade as people cheered and yelled out the magazine’s name.
Jeff anderson, sOLUtIONs CONsULtaNt Jeff sells advertising and provides marketing solutions to those who want to reach the gay community. He loves spending time with his partner and friends in his East Atlanta neighborhood and other areas around the city that have a small town feel. Jeff values working for a publication focused on his community and it drives him to see Fenuxe grow and flourish as new ideas keep coming.

Melissa
Carter
Atlanta’s most high profile gay public figure takes a look back as she moves on from The Bert Show.
It’s a crisp spring day at Tavern at Phipps and Melissa Carter is getting a free lunch. The waiter has just informed us the meal is on them, because he says they like to “take care of their famous faces.” “I’ll miss that,” Carter tells us laughing. At the time of our conversation, Carter was on the eve of her mid-April departure from Q100’s The Bert Show after 10 years as co-host and as Atlanta’s most high profile gay public figure. Her career in radio began in 1995 as a member of 99X’s The Morning X before she moved on to help make The Bert Show one of the most successful radio shows in the country. The Fenuxe 50 member sat down with us to talk about being out on the radio, the void she’s leaving for gay representation, how the gay community has gotten lazy and what her plans are for the future. Fenuxe: Was there a discussion with your co-workers or management before you came out on The Morning X? Melissa Carter: I did have a discussion but it’s not what you think. MTV at the time had a show called Singled Out and they had a gay man on there to find a date, and it was the first time they had done a gay-themed episode of the show. On The Morning X we were doing a version of Singled Out with our listeners and I made a joke to Barnes asking, “Well, are we going to do a gay version because they have?” And Barnes said, “Well, are you volunteering?” And I said, “Well, if that gets a gay person to do this, I’ll do it.” And they said, “Great.” And that was the end of the discussion. Fenuxe: So it wasn’t planned at all? Carter: No, it was very spontaneous and it was not awkward at all. And I can honestly say this – in fifteen years of being on the radio since that day, I’ve never received a piece of hate mail. I have received far more complaints for having strong opinions as a woman than I ever have about being gay. That certainly doesn’t mean that no listeners have a problem with my sexuality. When they’ve approached me with it,
they just want to throw that in as a dagger on top of it. So my sexuality has never been the point of contention. And I think the reason for that is also because Bert has created such an environment that we are able to be three dimensional to our listeners and not just these characters. Not just, “Well she’s the gay girl.” It’s, “kidney transplant, she’s gay, she thinks babies are ugly...”. That helps in that it’s taught me a lesson and hopefully it’s taught some of our listeners a lesson that they can absolutely not agree with me on my sexuality but we can find common ground on something else. Fenuxe: So was there ever a discussion about your sexuality with anyone from The Bert Show before they hired you on as a co-host in 2001? Carter: There was, because Bert was not from here and so he had not listened to The Morning X and he didn’t know me as well. We were riding in his jeep along 400 when he was interviewing me and he said, “Well, is there anything that you want to ask me?” And I flat-out told him, “Well, I’m gay and I’m not one to not talk about it on the radio and I’m not going to hide it.” And Bert’s response was, “Well, I don’t want you to be anything other than who you are.” And that was the end of the conversation, so I accepted the job based on that. Fenuxe: So how much do you think your sexuality has affected your career? Carter: If I had really thought about it and I had gone in to somebody and I said, “I want to be a top morning show DJ in the middle of Georgia but I’m going to talk about my sexuality,” there’s not one person that would have said I was smart. I just did it. And fortunately I’ve had success from that. If anything, my sexuality has probably helped in the success that I’ve had. FENUXE.CoM

“If you had told me at 20 that I would be doing what I’ve done, and talking about myself and my girlfriend and my embryos in the freezer, I would have thrown up. There’s no way.” What concerns me is the lack of representation after I’m gone. Because there have been gay men and women in media in this town and there still are, but they’re not willing to put themselves out there. Somebody’s gotta step up and pick up the slack because I have been proud to be doing what I’m doing for so long, but I never thought I’d be the only one this whole time. There have been other gay men and women on the radio, but they’ve been side characters and caricatures. If you are willing to be a caricature there’s a place for that, but you also have to put other personalities in the field that are out and gay and talking about their lives. I just don’t think we’re at the point yet where we can get lazy as a gay community. If you feel like you’re fighting for something then you’ll get all fired up, but if you feel like there’s not a goal to obtain then you kind of get lazy and I do believe that we’ve gotten lazy as a gay community. Fenuxe: So the void you’re leaving does concern you. Carter: It does. The emails I’ve received since I announced I was leaving have literally brought me to tears because they’re just the sweetest things. Last night I received an email from an African-American Pentecostal preacher, and the subject line of his email was “You were my framework.” So I open it up and he said he had no other reference but me when his son came out to him. And his opinion was, because I stuck my neck out and was proud of who I was, he realized it was more important for him to stick his neck out to his congregation than to just be part of the fold and to make his son feel bad about himself. It brought me to tears. And I didn’t do it – they did it. I’m going on my instinct and I didn’t realize how few people had the same instinct or same comfort or whatever the word is, until I received all these emails. But, I grew up with parents who believed that there is room for sacrifice in one’s life if it’s for a bigger cause. If you had told me at 20 that I would be doing what I’ve done, and talking about myself and
26 FENUXE.CoM
my girlfriend and my embryos in the freezer and talking about how hot I think Diane Lane is, I would have thrown up. There’s no way. I think that’s the thing, whether you’re straight or gay, it’s just living within yourself. Whether you’re a Tea Partyer or a conservative Republican or a liberal Democrat, we’re all trying to get acceptance from somebody. Fenuxe: After you announced you were leaving, you said there was no one reason – you just had this instinctual feeling that it was time to move on. Have you ever had an instinctual feeling about something else in your life that was this big of a decision? Carter: Honestly, no. Because everything else I could see it. When I got sick with kidney disease and was on dialasis for a year, there was a tangible goal there. When I left Turner, I took a paycut, but that’s still not the same thing because I was just 22 years old. Here I am already established and potentially at the height of my career, and walking away from it. Cold turkey. And people cannot believe that I have nothing else to go to. I really have no job lined up, I’m not talking or interviewing with anybody. Even Cumulus and Bert were like, “Really?” But they’ve been so respectful and so gracious to me. Fenuxe: Do you picture it being something in the public eye? Carter: I would like it to be. My love of news and my need for expression – I’d like for it to be something that fits into that. Fenuxe: And health-wise everything’s good? Carter: That’s another thing that I wanted to make clear. I’m perfectly healthy. I just had my eight-year anniversary of my transplant. So I’ve been very fortunate. Yeah, everything’s perfect. Fenuxe: So what are you going to do now between 5:30 and 10 in the morning? Carter: Sleep! [laughs]

TALE
By Dino Thompson-Sarmiento
you arrive fashionably late to the first party of the spring wearing Ferragamo’s new line, and your refined palette demands lobster and shrimp. But instead, you find yourself in front of a table with tiny versions of lobster sitting atop potatoes, sausages, corn, onions and garlic. The Southern Boil has arrived, so you best take off that Ferragamo because it’s going to get messy. But it’s going to be good. Local crawfish daddy Michael Blackstock and his wife, Tara, serve up the best boils in the South through their company Cajun Crawlers. Lucky for us he brings this delicious bayou favorite to the heart of Atlanta. B-stock, what is a guy from Atlanta doing in the crawfish biz? As a fraternity pledge in college in New Orleans, I learned to make a good crawfish boil. Later, as I continued the boils for alumni here in Atlanta, I was getting many additional requests. Hence, the business was born. How does a crawfish compare to its cousin the lobster in nutrition and taste? Crawfish has more protein per ounce. However, it is also higher in cholesterol. The taste is amazing due to the many cajun spices we use to season the food. What do most people not know about crawfish?
30 FENUXE.CoM
Most folks are shocked to find out that crawfish were not affected by the Gulf oil spill. They are a freshwater creature usually farm raised way off the coast. On average, 98 percent of crawfish come from Louisiana and 70 percent of them are consumed in that same state. Do you suck the heads? Definitely! That’s where most of the flavor resides. Do you put together public events where everyone can come? We cater to several events at local bars and restaurants around the state. You can check out upcoming events on our website at cajuncrawlers.com or our fan page on Facebook. I flew down to the Gulf and had some amazing crawfish étouffée at Schooners in Biloxi. I then flew back in time for the big boil at Kramer’s in Buckhead. The 600 in attendance were loving the massive boil and were definitely sucking the heads.

The mighty Aphrodite on playing the States and her gay love affair.
It was at Sydney Mardi Gras in the late 80s when Kylie Minogue first saw a Kylie drag queen. “I was very touched, very excited, very curious as to what it was,” she told Fenuxe. “And it’s been a love affair ever since.” The love affair between Minogue and the gay community will be on full display as she brings her Aphrodite tour through 17 exclusive North American cities. She lands at The Fox Theatre on May 6 for a show that’s got Atlanta’s gays buzzing like a swarm of rainbowcolored bees.
34 FENUXE.CoM
“ We're bringing everything that we can squeeze into the venue. It's a massive spectacle.”
Minogue is looking forward to playing the U.S. again after her electric 2009 For You, For Me tour. “The energy and the passion of the audience was just out of control,” she says. The thought of trying to match and exceed that energy and passion with an extravagant, grand live show can be stressful. A pre-show shot of scotch helps, she jokes. The moments backstage before facing her audience are transformative. “Those last few minutes before it’s time to make the walk to the stage are like walking through the Narnia closet,” she says. “You change from being the person you woke up as to the person that people are expecting to see.” Minogue is looking forward to her time in America for several reasons besides the rabid fans. One reason is a bit unexpected. “I love a good, crappy American diner,” she says. “I don’t know why. I’m not really a junk food consumer. Something just makes you want a stack of pancakes when you’re in the States.”
She also appreciates having a little more anonymity here so she can walk around without being recognized all the time. Minogue will be playing smaller venues in the U.S., so it won’t be the same production as on her European tour, but not to worry. “We’re bringing everything that we can squeeze into the venue. It’s a massive spectacle,” she says. So the spirit of the shows will stay the same, including plenty for her gay fans to appreciate. While she says she doesn’t segregate her gay audience from her straight audience when planning her shows, she does admit some conscious decisions. “If we’re talking about boys in little tiny toga outfits and sequins and hot pants, we make an allowance and say, ‘Okay, I think the boys are going to like that,’” she says. Note: The author of this first person account chose to remain anonymous. We decided to publish it regardless. While she writes about how she came out three years ago as transgendered, this highlights the struggle many trans people face with being completely “out.
I am transgendered.
I have an identity and self perception that is at odds with the genitalia I was born with. My birth certificate is marked with the letter “M,” but my heart and soul is marked with the letter “F.” What is it like from the inside of a transgendered person? I could tell you of the years of confusion, of the mixed signals my brain and body had to contend with, of the difficulty puberty brought with it, of the years of wondering if I was just weird or insane. Of the years I spent avoiding photographs of myself and mirrors as the image I saw clashed with the image I felt I should have. Somehow I coped – at times not very well, at times quite well. I could put on a good show of being a family man, a reliable and sensible gentlemen. The Roman poet Horace said “Who can travel to a foreign land and escape himself?” In the end, there is a reckoning with the price you have to pay for living in denial. Three years ago, I broke the silence and had the coming out experience that all of us in the LGBT community must go through. I have had the great blessing of an understanding family and supportive friends. Most trans people don’t get that. In a very real sense, we are pariahs.
In a way, I envy gender stable people, gay and straight. Their orientation or status can remain as stealthy or as open as they wish. Trans people are generally quite visible, and while things are improving, we cause unease wherever we are. I suppose it’s a problem of classifying those of us with gender identities that conflict with the “factory installed” equipment. Are we gay? Straight? Then too, we get lumped in with folks that while they may look similar, they are not us. As a MTF (male to female) transwoman, I am not a drag queen, cross dresser or transvestite. And I am no shemale. Those folks are members of our broader community and I have nothing against them. It’s just that I am a woman born with a birth defect – the Y-chromosome and all that it brought with it.
Trans people often remain caught in a perpetual limbo. A “neither” in a binary world that insists on classifying a person as “male” or “female.” Some opt to argue for a third gender, or an alternative orientation – “gender queer” it’s sometimes called. After all, no matter who we are intimate with, we are simultaneously being straight and gay on some level. But while this is the niche you often have to accept as a transperson, what we really want is the world to join in recognizing us in our native gender and not the marker assigned to us at birth. Of all the needs we have, that is the most critical and it is the most elusive. Finally, the greatest price we pay is the difficulty in finding love. It takes a special person to fall in love, or remain with, a transgendered partner. There is a special loneliness known to the transgendered. It comes from holding back, from uncertainty in the most basic concept of self identity. Those of us who have begun the transition process later in life have built private places into which we withdraw from the world – protective but lonely places. Those private places can vex those who would share our lives. Those who choose to fall in love with us, or remain in a relationship when we begin to transition, usually say the same thing – no
matter what gender they are, that they are in love with the person, not the package. What can you say of a woman that always thought of herself as straight who, in choosing to remain with her transitioning partner must now face the world viewing her as a lesbian, or stark raving mad, or both? Or of the lesbian whose partner’s voice is deepening and must now shave? I think the process is probably more difficult for them than for us. After all, we get to begin to live the life we always wanted and they must face a life they never dreamt of. Such is life through the transgendered looking glass, now where did the Queen of Hearts get to? FENUXE.CoM

Bill Lowe - Owner, The Bill Lowe Gallery “I am delighted to host the anniversary celebration of the Atlanta gay community’s premier arts and culture guide. The Fire Party promises to ignite a new era of celebration of the immense contributions of the gay community to art, culture and philosophy in American and global culture. This event acknowledges Atlanta’s position as a cultural capitol. For over a half century our city has been the regional center of gay aspiration and the momentum continues to build. The leadership of Fenuxe shares my gallery’s mandate to assert a southern template on issues and considerations that are universal and timeless. Bill Lowe Gallery’s twenty-five year history of proud support for our community reaches a crescendo on April 29th when Fenuxe presents the most sizzling party of the season in our magnificent space.”

Party With Impact 2011
Positive Impact can finally vote. The essential HIV mental health service organization is turning 18 and they’re celebrating in style at their annual signature event Party With Impact on Saturday, April 30.
Positive Impact served over 5,000 clients last year alone. Since opening they’ve expanded to include prevention services, a substance abuse treatment program, HIV testing and STD screenings.
Party With Impact was previously a series of individually hosted parties which converged at a gala dessert reception. This year, Dr. Russell Tippins and Randy New will now host one elegant party at their home.
But for one night it’s time to kick back and celebrate their successes.
“It’s really going to let people enjoy the evening a lot more,” says Michael Baker, Positive Impact’s director of advancement.

Dear Mary, My best friend in the world is a straight girl. I love her to pieces and she’s been there for me when others wouldn’t, but she’s getting clingy. She wants to go everywhere with me and I don’t know how to get her to lay off without hurting her feelings. Since you’re a Hall of Fame member of the hag club, I figured you could help. Signed,
Gimme A Break
Dear Gay Break, Oh, this brings back so many suppressed pleasant memories of spending hour after hour in a loud, crowded gay bar with only a strobe light for illumination while my best friend was the center of everyone’s attention and no one in the room could keep my name straight. The problem is, she’s in love with you. Not in any kind of deluded, “maybe I can change him!” way, but at this moment, she just thinks you’re the perfect man for her and she’s considering going sexless forever so she can be with you. By the way, she thinks you will automatically like this idea. The short answer is you need to get her laid. I know this from years of experience. Nothing starts me questioning whether or not I really love my boyfriend so much as a fantastic romp with someone else’s boyfriend. If she’s really embraced this “sexless” happily ever after, you might just want to hire a prostitute, but that’s a judgment call I can’t make for you. A decent one-nighter ought to remind her that there are boys out there who like her for more than her bags, shoes and ability to wear clearly visible makeup to work without anyone finding it offensive. There are boys out there who like her for her boobs and willingness to have sex with them. Once she sees that, I feel sure she’ll loosen her vice-like grip on you and your time.

Now Find Out What Kind Of Partygoer You Are 1 – 7 points: the clubs don’t thrill you. tiki torches on the back patio with friends and libations are enough to get your game going. 8 – 16 points: You enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. Community participation isn’t a must, but definitely something you’ll go for if the mood strikes. 17 – 25 points: You’re never tardy for the party. You would torch your best friend’s Audi A4 to stay on the gAy-List. And you’d blame it on your boyfriend.
IF yOU HaDN’t HearD – or in other words if you haven’t driven through Midtown or logged onto the internet in the last month – Fenuxe is celebrating our one year anniversary with The Fire Party on April 29. In the spirit of the event, it’s time to find out what kind of partygoer you are!
