FEN
Two things are
certain to happen whenever Logo looks for the next drag superstar on Rupaul’s Drag Race: boatloads of drama and major Atlanta representation. Season 3, premiering January 24, will be no exception, with local gals Mariah and Phoenix putting their best stiletto forward in their chase for the tiara. These outspoken queens might come from the same city but they work completely different scenes, with Mariah having made her mark in ballroom drag and Phoenix being a weekly fixture at bars like Blake’s on the Park and Jungle. They got together with Fenuxe for a joint interview to talk about learning from past Atlanta contestants’ mistakes, what the world should know about drag, and well…pushing girls down steps.
14 FENUXE.COM
It’s interesting having two contestants from Atlanta coming from totally different drag scenes. Did you play that difference up on the show? Mariah: I think that we actually touched more on a lot of our commonalities than our differences. We mostly talked about where we were from and how it was growing up and the gay scene in Atlanta. That’s usually what most of our conversations centered around. And of course kiki-ing it with the other girls. [laughs] Phoenix: Uh-huh! Uh-huh! [laughs]
the contestants if I was shady. I’m not shady at all. I’m a very honest, upfront person. If you don’t want a very honest, upfront answer then do not look at me, look at someone else. So there was a time or two where I had to be honest with someone.
Mariah: Yeah Phoenix definitely ruffled some feathers. [laughs] Phoenix: [laughs] I mean if someone asks
for my honest opinion about things, and I say to you, “Do you want me to be honest?” That right there should be a clue to say, “You’re seriously about to let me have it.” So there’s a little bit of drama on the show but who wants a bunch of nice queens? That’s just a part of drag, there’s always a little drama.
Previous Atlanta contestants on “Drag Race” haven’t gotten very far on the show. Did you learn anything from their mistakes in strategizing how to handle this season? What are your ultimate goals on the show? Whenever you walk out that door and you’re Phoenix: Well people need to keep in mind done with it, what do you want to have shown the that however far you get on the show should world? be on the backburner. We beat out thousands upon thousands of girls who wanted to be on the show, so people make comments but they gotta realize that this is a television show. You really don’t know why you get kicked off. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not as good as someone else on the show.
Mariah: Well for myself, I definitely studied everything from the start to the afterparties to the behind-the-scenes, the bonus stories, to the Interior Illusions Lounge, I studied the other girls. I went there with a solid strategy in mind and I didn’t go there for a sprint, I went for a marathon. You gotta know your opponent and figure out how to take ‘em out one by one. But of course, all while maintaining yourself.
So what kind of drama can we expect on the show this season? Mariah: I know at the party I’m pushing a couple girls down some steps. [laughs] Phoenix: [laughs] Mariah: That’s all I can guarantee you! Phoenix: Yeah it should be really interesting you know? I was asked on the show by one of
Phoenix: For me one of the reasons why I
really wanted to be on this show was to change peoples’ viewpoints on drag. You know, a lot of people have this mindset that we all are confused about our sexual identity and blah, blah, blah and I want people to realize that
this is an art. I am every day a boy and very happy being a boy. Drag, or performance art, is my job. It’s a career. So when I leave the show, I’m really hoping people see the art of drag and realize this is an art form just like music or theater.
Mariah: Same thing. I’m a hairstylist and I deal with a lot of women and regular people every day and they are constantly surprised because I don’t seem like the “type” of person that would do drag. A lot of mainstream gay people have the misconception that drag necessarily equates to flamboyance which it completely does not. A straight man can be flamboyant. What I do is a craft and I take it very seriously and I like to be good at. The show is not to go and learn on, but to get sharper. As soon as you get to a level that you think you’ve plateaued, there’s a whole other level waiting for you that you haven’t seen yet. And the Drag Race is it. FENUXE.COM

IN A CITY full of activities for gay football fans, gay swimmers, gay volleyball players and more, it’s borderline shocking no one thought of gay rollerskating. Next thing you know, you’ll tell us there’s no gay drill team (Hey, wait a minute...).
Lucky for the tube sock wearing quad-skater in all of us, Brad Williams, Jungle, and The Heretic are presenting a rollerskating extravaganza. Lucky for homeless LGBT youth, it’s a benefit for CHRIS Kids called Love Skate.
The January 16 event being held at SkateA-Long USA in Lilburn is no ordinary spin around the rink with a “Hokey Pokey” break. This is a gay rollerskating event, and you can’t have gay rollerskating without a drag roller derby race. It just wouldn’t be natural.
development Beth Keller tells Fenuxe. “Brad Williams is so creative and a strong supporter of the community.” Williams was motivated by two factors – to help those in need and to create an event that didn’t require staying out all night. “I hate to admit it but I’m getting older and find the late hours of going out to clubs sometimes wears me out,” Williams says. “Realizing that but also still wanting to have some fun, I came up with an event where people of all ages can come out, have a great time, and still get home early enough to get up and be productive the next day.”
Rollerskating games and contests are on the agenda as well, including a wig snatch. Bring a wig, put it on, and when the organizers say go, everyone skates around and tries to snatch the wigs off one another. The last one wearing their wig wins – just like in life. Also, if you’re into the group thing, be sure to participate in opportunities to make new friends during If Love Skate goes well enough, Williams plans to make it a quarterly event benefiting Group Skates. a different charity each time. ALTHOUGH A COMMON
misconception, libido is not that Puerto Rican boy band from the 80s. It’s sex drive, baby. The pure, unadulterated desire to get. it. on. But what happens when the desire to get it on is too low to make you want to get off, or even get it up? First know that libido is highly subjective. “The definition of low libido is only a problem when the desire falls outside an individual’s – or their partner’s – expectation,” says Rodney Fox, an adult nurse practitioner at Pride Medical. Our libidos are affected by our mental, physical, and chemical well-being – think of it as The Trick’s Triad. Stressed out? Having identity issues? Intimacy issues? These are all mental cock blockers (to use the proper medical terminology). Physical factors turning your sex drive into a traffic jam on the connector include illness, drug and alcohol abuse, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. If we’re talking chemical, it could be a low testosterone issue or it could be just plain old bad chemistry between partners. There are libido issues more common to the gay community. Sorry ladies, you get the raw end of the deal on this one. “Libido does seem to be more of an issue between female partners because low libido affects women more than men,” says Fox. “The odds are stacked against them.” But the gay boys don’t get off the hook so fast either, thanks to a higher likelihood of body image issues versus the straight guys. So now that we’ve sufficiently killed the

mood, how do you get back “up” to the task at hand? Pride Medical’s Fox clears two paths to the sexual promised land, and they don’t involve pills. Medications can help with erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, but that won’t cure the overall issue. We’re talking exercise and communication. “Being fit – not perfect – does improve physical and mental vitality,” he says. “Exercise alone can increase testosterone for both men and women, thereby increasing sexual interest.” It also makes you look hotter and feel less stressed, putting you in a better mental state leading to a broken headboard or two if you’re lucky. Speaking up is the other key to a healthy libido. “Communicate issues or concerns with your partner. Be frank about desires and hang-ups,” Fox says. “Remember libido occurs mostly in the mind, and the mind can be very creative, if engaged.” So go forth. Get fit. Get talking. And get some. Gym culture is more synonymous with the gay community than rainbows and rock gardens. So we turned the floor over to three of Atlanta's most popular certified (and certifiably gay) personal trainers to answer your burning questions about workout myths, pickup lines, and ass-tastic exercises.
Chase Zabernowsky Manager, Gravity Fitness What’s the biggest workout myth? That just doing cardio will make you lose weight. What exercises can you do to make your butt look hotter? SQUATS, SQUATS, and did I mention SQUATS? What’s the worst pickup line a client has given you? Can you make me look like you, so that I would have a shot at going out with you?
Kevin DeLoach
Troy Meyers
Owner, FitYourLife.com
Owner, JockBoyLocker.com
What’s the biggest workout myth? Guys think heavier weight equals bigger muscles – the reality is that 65% of guys in the gym are lifting too much weight, causing them to lose form and do the exercise incorrectly.
What’s the biggest workout myth? That doing crunches or situps is going to get rid of abdominal fat. The only way to get rid of belly fat is proper diet and working hard.
What exercises can you do to make your butt look hotter? Old school squats and lunges are the best exercises for a butt you can bounce a quarter off of. What’s the worst pickup line a client has given you? “Would you show me that exercise with your shirt off? I am having a hard time understanding which muscle I am supposed to be using.”
22 FENUXE.COM
What exercises can you do to make your butt look hotter? The squat is the best exercise to make your butt look hotter and lunges are a very close second. Add both of these to your workout and watch your bubble butt grow and tighten. What’s the worst pickup line a client has given you? “I wanna lick your calves and suck your toes, you interested?” “Do you have any Italian in you? [No] Want some?” Sadly I could go on and on with this.

CLEAR AWAY ALL
the white noise about supplements, workout routines, and diets and you’re left with one core issue when it comes to health and fitness: personal choice. Do I go to the gym today or drive right past it for a stop at Zesto’s? Do I buy that shake weight even though I would look like I’m trying out for Falcon Studios?
The Real Chow Baby 782 Ponce De Leon Ave. Atlanta, GA 30306
Dine-out choices in particular can make or break our health and fitness goals, and no restaurant in the city gives patrons more power than The Real Chow Baby. A recent stop inside the new Ponce location revealed significant changes from the popular Howell Mill location.
While the cozy red and black color scheme stays intact, co-owner Chip Joyner went for a new wide open layout. The kitchen is so open for viewing you can see every last grain of rice being stir-fried on the 5-footwide flat top grill. But the create-your-own stir fry rules stay the same. A glance at the wall in the beginning of the line reveals a floor-toceiling menu with nutritional info to help guide you along. Chow Baby’s lineup of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and meats is massive and flavorful. The Ponce location has expanded their gluten-free and vegetarian menus. We topped our brown rice with broccoli, cheese, cilantro, garlic, red onions, a boiled egg, green peppers, and mushrooms, then added chicken and sausage in a ginger lime
basil sauce and let it fry. So we tempted ourselves with a cheat option or two. There’s something about selecting every last ingredient of a meal that will satisfy the control freak in all of us. Washing it down with Chow Baby’s gluten-free beer allows for a nice compromise between kicking back while staying health-conscious. Staying in shape doesn’t mean you can never eat dessert again either. Cut down on portions and split Chow Baby’s tangy key lime pie with a graham cracker crust and you won’t feel guilty enough to double your time on the elliptical the next day. It's tough getting and staying in shape with so much temptation out there. Luckily Chow Baby is offering more opportunities to get real in 2011.
THE CHOW GUIDE With so many options on the The Real Chow Baby’s bar, it can be overwhelming if you want to keep it healthy. Here are five foods to focus on courtesy of Dan McGrath, owner of Body Solutions personal training, fitness studio, and nutritional counseling. BROWN RICE - It's natural and gives your body energy. CHICKEN - Chicken is a good lean protein. VEGGIES - They fill you up and they are very low in calories. HOT MUSTARD - Mustard generally has 0 calories. BLACK BEANS - They have fiber, healthy carbs, and protein.

HIV Slumber who have sex with men. MSM. It’s the simple catch-all term used in studies to define gay and bisexual men. The term “MSM” doesn’t conjure up the typical light-hearted stereotypes that are associated with the word “gay.” MSM doesn’t sound fashionable or fun. It’s cold, clinical, and it’s exact. And it’s who we are.
the largest percentage of persons diagnosed with AIDS and persons with an AIDS diagnosis who have died,” reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Nationally, MSM represent 2% of the U.S. population, yet account for more than half of all new HIV infections. MSM are the only risk group for HIV in which new infections have increased steadily since the early 90s.
A CDC report issued in September revealed both encouraging and frightening results for Atlanta’s gay community. In a nationwide study, Atlanta had the lowest HIV rate among MSM versus all other cities in the study, at 6 percent. However, Atlanta was near the top of the list in MSM who did not know they were HIV positive, at a whopping 55 percent.
“Since the beginning of the US epidemic, MSM have consistently represented

"The way that human beings react to risk is that it's got to be pretty immediate before it significantly changes behavior,” Elliott says. “And the risk doesn't seem to be nearly as immediate as it used to be.” “A Renewed Epidemic” Elliott doesn’t hesitate when asked what the barriers are to HIV prevention. “Apathy and indifference,” says the executive director of AID Atlanta. He cites a misguided feeling among many in the community that HIV is no longer a dangerous or deadly disease.
Last December, on the heels of World AIDS Day, a 40-year-old American man in Berlin was classified as cured of HIV. The announcement came three-and-a-half years after Brown underwent a transplant of HIV-resistant stem cells for the treatment of leukemia. Doctors and scientists have been quick to point out that the treatment cannot be applied to the vast majority of HIV patients.
“There’s also a sense of fatigue on the part of people my age who’ve been dealing with this now for close to 30 years and people are tired of it,” he says. “But the danger is still there.”
“We should be clear that this ‘cure’ will in fact have almost no impact on the average HIV-infected patient,” says Bert Jacobs, a professor at Arizona State University at Tempe as reported by EmaxHealth.
Breakthroughs in HIV medication and science have also had the unintended consequence of giving a false sense of security. Those living with HIV/AIDS often take “the cocktail” - a combination of antiretroviral drugs taken to combat the disease.
It’s a combination of seemingly beneficial events that unfortunately lead to riskier behavior like unprotected sex. “The way that human beings react to risk is that it’s got to be pretty immediate before it significantly changes behavior,” Elliott says. “And the risk doesn’t seem to be nearly as immediate as it used to be. It’s still there

but it doesn’t seem to be as in our faces as it once was.” The numbers of young MSM unaware of their positive HIV status are skyrocketing as well, which doesn’t bode well for the future. “You just think about how many people are unaware of their status, and of course those people are much more likely to spread HIV as statistically shown by the CDC,” Elliott says. “You have on your hands a renewed epidemic in a sense. It’s a different kind of epidemic, but it’s still shocking and alarming.”
Eyes Wide Open the excuses people find for not getting tested, the fact remains we’re still losing each other. We’re not losing a generation of gay men overnight like we were in the 80s and 90s, but we’re still losing each other. “I had a friend in Indianapolis die over the weekend of HIV/AIDS,” says Elliott. “He was under 35 years of age, so this is still a disease that claims young and vital lives. This was an amazing musician who just had an amazing zest for life.” The death has rocked Indianapolis’ gay community out of a peaceful slumber regarding HIV/AIDS. “Unfortunately it takes something like that to get us to recognize that this is still a very dangerous situation,” Elliott says.
MSM doesn't sound fashionable or fun. It's cold, clinical, and it's exact. And it's who we are.
The way to keeping something like that from happening in Atlanta is clear. Getting tested, asking a potential sexual partner’s status, and practicing safe sex are basic adult decisions. “You’ve got to take responsibility for yourself and not depend on anyone to protect you,” Elliott says. A GLANCE BACKWARD IN TIME TO APPRECIATE THE FUTURE The New Year always serves as a time to reflect on the past as well as a time of optimism for the future. Nowhere is that more apparent than in regards to HIV infection. 2011 will mark the 30th anniversary of the first case report in 1981. In those three decades, we have seen more scientific advances in the field of HIV research including the discovery of the causative virus, the manner of transmission, how it can be prevented, how it works against the immune system, and most importantly, ways to effectively treat the infection so that those infected can lead a long, productive, and fulfilled life.
Get Tested But the struggle is far from over. The CDC estimates that there are 56,000 new infections yearly in the United States. Currently there are approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. who are infected with HIV and one quarter of them remain unaware they are infected. It is up to you to know your status. Get tested. Protect your health and the health of your partners. If tested in the past, get retested annually and stay up to date. Then, if you test positive, seek out an empathetic and caring HIV practice that fits your lifestyle to meet with you and provide you with the critical care and follow-up you need.
Center of Excellence AbsoluteCARE Medical Center and Pharmacy is one of those excellent practices. AbsoluteCARE recently relocated to 2140 Peachtree Road, Suite 232, just north of Piedmont Hospital. The experienced caregivers at AbsoluteCARE, led by Dr. Joel Rosenstock, have over 100 years of cumulative experience in treating HIV infection. They provide a patient-centered medical home environment that utilizes

physicians, PA’s, NP’s, and nurses to provide the primary treatment and care; social workers and care managers to help clients navigate the healthcare system; health educators to explain the disease and the therapies; mental health counselors and peer educators to help with the stresses related to being positive; a full service pharmacy to help with adherence to therapies; and massage therapy and chiropractic services. AbsoluteCARE has been treating HIV in the Atlanta community for over 10 years and is one of only 2 sites in Georgia designated as a Center of Excellence for HIV. Let’s look ahead to the future as a community. Get Tested, Access Care, Stay Healthy. Happy 2011!

Congratulations! You almost made it to MLK Day. The new year’s resolution is broken and so are our hearts. But fear not – you’re not the only one to drop the ball. Here are the biggest resolution-breaking excuses going around the gayborhood.

Dear Mary, I have a friend who’s not always participating in proper etiquette for a gay bar (if there really is such a thing). He always tips based on the price of the drink, i.e. if a drink costs $4.75, he only tips 25 cents. He rounds up to the nearest dollar, unless the change is over 50 cents. I always just assumed you should tip at least $1.00 on any drink even if it’s just soda. Are all queens that cheap, or am I over-tipping? Could you give a lesson in gay bar tip etiquette? Signed, Liquored UP in the ATL
Dear Licker, Miss Manners and I hang out a lot. I’ve been to the bar with her countless times and I cannot begin to tell you how much that woman can drink – but even when she’s eight shots of Jaeger into the evening, she tips a dollar a drink. She also sends thank you notes to all the guys she goes home with, no more than six weeks after the night. She’s classy like that. Personally, I think of this as a sliding scale thing. I’m a straight woman who almost exclusively goes to gay bars so if there just happens to be a bartender who will actually give me the time of day over the 300 men waving money at him, well, that man deserves a big tip. If it’s your run-of-the-mill, hadto-shout-him-down-and-then-he-got-my-drink-wrong scenario, I’ll tip 20%, even if that is only a quarter. To be fair, though, if I only tip a quarter, I can buy more drinks and then I’m far more likely to do something like tell him he’s so fantastic he deserves my watch or phone or car as a special tip. I think the most important thing to do is give your friend a really judgmental side-eye every time they leave a shitty tip. That way, the bartender will know you don’t approve and will be more likely to pay attention to you, and it’s a passive aggressive way to comment on your friend’s behavior, which is the only kind of aggression I’m comfortable with. Cheers, y’all!
