a Toast To equality IF THere IS ever an excuse to stay in town, don a tux and spring for a limo, it’s at the Marriott Marquis on Saturday, May 14 as the Human Rights Campaign Atlanta presents the 24th Annual Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner & Auction. And this year, the LGBT equality seekers have some “precious” starpower lined up.
Openly gay director Lee Daniels will present the Ally For Equality Award to actress Mo’Nique. The actress won an Academy Award for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire, directed by Daniels. “We think this is a grand slam,” HRC Atlanta co-chair Julie Wood told Fenuxe. Daniels, who received the Visibility Award at last year’s national HRC dinner, was more than happy to stand by his friend Mo’Nique. “Lee specifically asked to speak for Mo’Nique because of the special relationship they have,” said HRC Atlanta co-chair Matthew Garrett. “I think the duo is going to be really impactful to the attendees.” HRC national president Joe Solmonese will also be addressing the audience, but it’s not all about the star power. Two local men will be singled out for their accomplishments as well. Jeff Cleghorn will be honored for his efforts in the successful fight against Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Also, Positive Impact founder and CEO Paul Plate will receive recognition for his role in the success of the HIV/AIDS outreach organization.
18 FENUXE.COM
This year’s HRC dinner will give everyone a chance to celebrate the successes of the past year including the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal and the reintroduction of an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act in the Senate. But as always, there will be a focus on the work ahead. A significant part of the work involves getting our personal stories out there, which HRC is encouraging with the “Our Stories” dinner theme. Five videos will be shown of LGBT community members and allies talking about their experiences. “It’s a big step beyond being just visible because it’s those stories that change the hearts and minds of lawmakers and our neighbors and people in our workplace,” says HRC’s Wood. And with that message in mind, attendees will walk away from the night of glitz, glam and good deeds with a goal to tell their own stories and celebrate even more successes next year. 24th Annual Atlanta HRC Gala Dinner & Auction Saturday, May 14, 2011 Atlanta Marriott Marquis VIP Reception: 5PM | Silent Auction: 6PM Dinner: 7:30PM Tickets available at www.atlantahrcdinner.org

Take Yo Mama Out All Night! Everyone always pays attention to the guy who brings his mom to the gay bar. But better than the attention is the bonding experience you can have by showing your mom a night she won’t forget. And with Mother’s Day approaching on May 8, there’s no better time to plan the proper Mom-centric gay night out. You don’t want to scare her off by starting the night doing body shots off of an oiled up go-go boy named Brock. Hit up Mixx for a martini and some early evening relaxation courtesy of pianist David Reeb. Once hunger hits, you need to take her to a place that’s a) fun, b) gayer than Disney on Ice and c) run by a gay guy and his mama. Bingo! You’re taking her to Las Margaritas. Once Oscar and Mama have bid you goodbye from their table up front, the porch at Joe’s is calling your names. Grab drinks and have her guess which waiter is the straight one. This is how all sons bond with their mothers. Then it’s time for some homosexual book learnin’. And the only thing better than having her tell that guy at Joe’s that she liked his broach is bringing your half-sloshed mother into Outwrite.
20 FENUXE.COM
It’s almost 11PM and it’s time for your mom’s first drag show, so off to Blake’s you go. Grab a spot near the front because Kitty LeClaw will surely point you both out. And your mother will have the story to tell at your wedding about getting tore up from the floor up while being interrogated by the lovely Ms. Kitty. If mom is still standing and the Medic Alert people haven’t been notified yet, the VIP booth at Jungle is in order. Because there’s no reason your mom shouldn’t know every word to “S&M.” After you’re done explaining “sex in the air,” and why Rihanna loves the smell of it, it’s time to call it a night. The next day on the phone, she’ll claim she was “overserved” and you’ll tell her about laying her head on that bear’s chest. Just be prepared for some lingering questions before she hangs up. Like why all the women were so tall and wore so much makeup.
A-TOWN FOODIE FRENZY LUCKY FOR US
, sometimes the best things the world has to offer come to Atlanta instead of us having to travel to find them. Case in point is the Atlanta Food & Wine Festival taking place throughout Midtown on May 19 to May 22, a weekend of culinary pampering unlike any in the country. The festival focuses on the food and beverage traditions of the South as well as other “Souths” around the world, from south of the border to the south of Italy. And when we say it takes place throughout Midtown, we mean everywhere in the gay playground – the Loews Hotel, W Atlanta Midtown, Margaret Mitchell House, Four Seasons, numerous restaurants and even scattered throughout our streets. It will be like if Top Chef All-Stars were filmed in Midtown, had over 50 contestants and only lasted 3 days. “I think it’s just great for Atlanta,” says chef and festival participant Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun’s, Kevin Rathbun Steak and Krog Bar. “It’s the biggest thing that Atlanta’s seen in awhile.” The activities were expertly designed by the Festival Founders Council, a who’s who of the region’s culinary rock stars. After an opening reception at a secret location (festival organizers, talent and $2,500 ticket buyers only!) on Thursday night, the taste bud debauchery begins the following morning.
22 FENUXE.COM
The festival’s offerings reflect three themes – Old Traditions, New Traditions and Imports & Inspirations. Old Traditions covers anything from Sunday suppers to distilling moonshine. New Traditions involves the chefs, mixologists and growers leading the way forward in areas like food carts and molecular cocktails. Wines and spirits from southern regions around the world will be featured as part of the Imports & Innovations track. Ticket prices vary from $75 for a couple of hours in the tasting tents and street carts all up the way up to the $2,500 “Connoisseur Package.” This biggie includes access to the aforementioned opening reception, the chance to cook, shake, stir and toast with the pros and a laundry list of other indulgences. It’s shaping up to be a culinary weekend without rival and another reason why our fair city is inching up the list of the world’s acclaimed foodie destinations. The Day Trip:
North Georgia WHAT SHOPPING DESTINATION
is within driving distance and includes Aeropostale, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Kenneth Cole, Michael Kors, Saks Fifth Avenue and Aldo? Is it Lenox? Phipps? Try Dawsonville. It’s the day trip treasure known as the North Georgia Premium Outlets. The outlets are the perfect place to snag deals on some of the hottest summer fashions. They’re just a one-hour zip up 400 then Dahlonega Highway and you’re there and ready to explore. Over 140 stores are packed into the massive complex, all buzzing with shoppers humming around high on bargains. In addition to the other stores mentioned, you’ve also got Brooks Brothers, Polo Ralph Lauren, Cole Haan and a brand new DKNY store to satisfy your fashion fix. And don’t worry too much about feeling unwelcome or uncomfortable seeing as you’re a big old homo in North Georgia. “Family” visits are common at the outlets and there’s a larger gay community in the region than you would think. If you’re not sure about someone being gay or not, just test them with our secret handshake (we have one of those right?). While you’re up there, you might as well take advantage of the natural beauty right around the corner. Amicalola Falls State Park is just 20 minutes north of the outlets and worth every minute. The falls are the tallest cascade in the Southeast and you don’t need a sherpa to get up there. There’s an easy pathway or a more challenging trail with staircases to choose from if you’re feeling daring. If by some miracle you still have time to kill on your day trip, make the half-hour drive east to Dahlonega and visit the gorgeous Blackstock Vineyards & Winery and Three Sisters Vineyards. There’s no reason you can’t add some vino to the carload of apparel you picked up. As you drive back down 400 with your haul of goodies, you’ll be happy knowing the sun hasn’t even set yet and – after a glass of your new wine of course – there will still be time to go out in the city showing off your latest fashion finds. The Overnight:
Savannah
By B.Tidwell
IN THE LAND of Spanish moss and
the southern charm of the Georgia coast, Savannah is located a pleasant fourhour drive away, making it perfect for an overnight excursion. If you leave first thing in the morning, you can be in Savannah in time for a late lunch at one of the cafes along the river walk.
Why stay in a boring hotel when you can check into one of the many gay friendly bed and breakfast houses? Notable among them are the Victorian mansions in the historic district like Park Avenue Manor and Azalea Inn & Gardens. When it’s time for dinner, choose one of the many top notch restaurants the city has to offer. You probably already know about Lady & Sons, celebrity chef Paula Deen’s flagship restaurant. But make sure to try the gay friendly 606 East Café, conveniently located downtown. After dinner, brace yourself for a ghost tour. You can board an actual hearse and ride through the streets of Savannah while your driver details horrific stories of murder, mayhem and the Civil War. You’ll learn there are enough skeletons in Savannah to populate every closet south of Macon. Then shake off the chills with a few cocktails and dancing at Club One, a gay bar one block from the river. They also have drag shows and occasional theater productions in the early evening. Or for a quieter atmosphere in a gay setting to end your night, stop by Blaine’s Back Door, a cozy laid back bar with a neighborhood feel to it. Upon an early rise the next morning and breakfast at your B&B, ride out to Tybee Island to find some white sand and breakers. The beaches are beautiful and the water is refreshing. Lunch will surely beckon after your morning on the beach and some shopping at the many souvenir shops and galleries on the island. Café Loco, located just after you cross the bridge onto the island, is excellent. The shrimp boats bring their catch straight to their private dock and the crab cakes are to die for. If you don’t give in to the temptation to stay another night – and you will certainly want to – you can be back in Atlanta in time for the Armorettes at Burkhart’s.
28 FENUXE.COM
The Long Weekend:
Las Vegas
IF YOU’VE GOT some off days to burn coming up, the time is right to book a long weekend trip to Las Vegas – home of just the right amount of debauchery and excess for a blowout gay weekend. With just over a four-hour flight to make and a threehour time change, you can be wheels up after a relaxing breakfast in Atlanta then be checked in and on the prowl for a party in Vegas by noon. It’s a laid back atmosphere for gay visitors to Vegas, so you won’t have to worry much about booking your stay in a non-gay-friendly hotel. “Come as you are” is the overall way of the city. But if you prefer accommodations specifically for us, try the Blue Moon Resort just off the strip. It’s the city’s only hotel exclusively for gay men and features a can’t-miss lagoon style pool and cascading waterfall. The summer gay party season is in full swing at the city’s seemingly unlimited number of opulent hotels. Hit up the luxury-laden Bare Pool Lounge for Heaven, their gay dance party going down on the last Saturday of each month. Everyone wakes up and does it all over again on Sunday, with popular pool parties at the Rumor Boutique Hotel and the Luxor drawing the gays their way. And a massive gay dance fest called Matinee Las Vegas comes to the city on 4th of July weekend. You won’t find anything resembling a Vegas gayborhood, but the closest thing to it would be an area of town nicknamed The Fruit Loop. It’s populated by a gay bookstore and gay clubs including the swanky Piranha Nightclub. If you like your edges a little more rough, visit the collection of bars in The Commercial Center District – just keep your wits about you. Don’t forget the shows in residence including Celine Dion, Elton John, The Lion King and several different Cirque du Soliel productions to choose from. So the opportunities available for an unforgettable three or four-day gay stay in Vegas are clearly abundant. The trick is fitting all the clubs, parties and shows in before you board the flight back home to Atlanta. Oh yeah, and we hear people gamble there too.

Cabo San Lucas FOR YOUR WEEKLONG getaway,
you want a place to stretch your legs, be pampered and not think about anything that doesn’t have to do with sparkling sun, crystal clear blue ocean, tan skin and frozen drinks containing tiny umbrellas. Grab your passport and some SPF 30 and get out of the country for a week of unbridled luxury at the gay hotspot Cabo San Lucas.
The celebrated city at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula is just a four-hour flight away from Atlanta. It’s quickly overtaking Cancun and Puerto Vallarta as the gay Mexico destination of choice. Beauty is in the name and in the air at the elite Villa Bellissima. The immaculate hillside villa is welcoming to all, including the occasional celebrity. Gaze out on the Pacific from the terrace or allow the bright Baja light to shine in on you through the large expanses of glass surrounding you in your roomy paradise. Just make sure to soak in the sun down by the infinity swimming pools. While the temptation to lounge all day in the sun getting girl-drink-drunk will be hard to resist, there are sights to see outside of your villa – specifically where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. El Arco de Cabo San Lucas is the calling card of the city, welcoming all who arrive. The uniquely stunning rock formation is a must-see and is frequented not only by sightseers but sea lions and other marine life as well. Cabo nightlife doesn’t get going until late, so rest up and relax for awhile before venturing out into the night. Look for the rainbow flag in the window of Hangover Bar and stop in for a drink at the laidback locale, then follow the sound of the pumping music a few blocks down the street at Los Jarros for some classic gay dance beats. If you’re looking for a more upscale night out, check out Friday nights at Passion Club at the ME Cabo resort. It’s an unofficial gay night but one which attracts a sizable crowd of chic partygoers. After a week of sun, sand and unforgettable sights, you’ll be well rested and ready to revel your Atlanta family with your tales from Cabo.

The 10-day:
Tasmania FOR YOUR EXTRA long excursion, you need more time to plan so it’s the trip you’ll never forget. Lucky for you, Australia’s summers are from December to February, so the time is right to start arranging your once-in-a-lifetime trip to the island of Tasmania. Distant locales call for more effort on your travels, so be prepared for a full 24 hours of flying before you get to Hobart International Airport. But don’t worry, the payoff is worth it. Like most places in the world, “Tassie” was not always gay-friendly. But locals have turned a corner in recent years and have made the island a welcome place for gay residents and travelers alike. You’ll be traveling all over the island during your stay but check into the Henry Jones Art Hotel during your stay in the capitol city of Hobart. This former jam factory-turned-first class hotel is right on the waterfront overlooking Sullivan’s Cove and is Australia’s first dedicated art hotel. Nightlife is within walking distance of the Henry Jones, like the Hope & Anchor Tavern, who host a gay night on Sundays. Just a few blocks away is the dance club Lalaland, who are always welcoming of anyone but have specific gay nights every other Saturday. But there’s more to Tasmania’s charm than nightlife – there’s the wildlife. Freycinet National Park is a twoand-a-half hour drive up the coast from Hobart and is famous for the turquoise water and white sandy beaches of Wineglass Bay. There are also award-winning wineries up and down the east coast of Tasmania. Tasmania offers all you can imagine for the adventurous gay soul who is ready for the trip of a lifetime. As you make your way back to Hobart at the tail end of your trip, your camera full of unforgettable memories, it will become quickly apparent – the world is changing, and Tasmania’s beauty is matched only by its efforts at opening their arms to us.

Fit & Fabulous With Chef lala!
By Dino Thompson-Sarmiento
ZIPPInG THrOUGH MIdTOWn
trying to avoid the potholes, you feel something bouncing on your lap – to your horror, you realize it’s your stomach! Time to re-think eating choices. A call to my friend Chef Lala was in order. She is an award-winning Chef and graduate of the famed Le Cordon Bleu. You can often watch her featured on The Today Show, CNN or on The Martha Stewart Show. She is also the spokesperson for the ADA and will soon be starring in a new cooking TV show.
My wok and I have become good friends. I toss some protein (chicken, lean beef or firm tofu) on high smoke point oil (peanut oil or canola) for two minutes. Add fresh veggies. Toss for two minutes; add peanuts, light soy sauce and sirarcha hot sauce. Serve over instant brown rice. Dinner is ready in fewer than 10 minutes.
Lala, what helpful hints can you give us to stay healthy and fit?
I’ve often heard that bread and pasta are the enemies to achieve and maintain a flat stomach?
I am glad you asked about healthy, because it is about a life, not a diet. Choose foods that nourish your body and provide you with vitamins and nutrients. Avoid saturated fats, go easy on the salt, have portion control and drink plenty of water. What about snacking? How can we beat the urges to down a bag of chips or a gallon of chocolate ice cream? Choose snacks that are high in nutrients and satiety. One of my personal favorites is peanuts with spicy chili powder and lime. What is a quick, healthy meal to eat when you get home from a long day at work?
36 FENUXE.COM
Information can often lead to misinformation. When it comes to pasta, select semolina pasta and don’t overcook it. Wheat pasta is high in fiber and best when served with red sauce. Whole grain breads provide high fiber and nutrients. What is the one thing you want our readers to remember about food and eating healthy? If you don’t have enough time to eat right and work out – make a lot of time for disease in the future. Great choices today will lead to a better life tomorrow.

Dear Mary, My best friend has feelings for me, but the feeling isn’t mutual. More and more frequently he’s been mentioning my good looks or my personality and while I know he’s right, I try to steer the conversation away from that. I try and suggest other guys to him to give him a hint but he just gets mad. Should I just tell him he has no shot at me?
Signed,
Looking Elsewhere
Dear L.E., Wait…you steer the conversation away from compliments to you? I would like to advise you but I fear we are not of the same species. We do this all the time. We have male “friends” who are totally into us, we know it, and we keep them around for the “just-in-case.” What if you turn into an ogre one day? This guy isn’t going to care. You may want to consider keeping him around, really, just in case you turn into an ogre and you need help relocating to a stinky-ogre-swamp. Besides, if he’s really that into you, just being near you and being allowed to bask in your ogre presence should be a treat, with or without the possibility of a relationship. I hear you calling me cruel. Fine. Here’s what you do: sit him down and explain the reality of the situation. Let him know there’s no hope, you view him solely as a friend who you value and want to keep, but there is no future for the two of you and he deserves to know it. In almost all cases, he will accept this information gracefully. He will then rededicate himself to the gym, start seeing new people, and become a fascinating person now that he’s concentrating all that energy he was wasting on you on more productive endeavors. You will then proceed to fall in love with him, and he will spurn your advances. So, really, it’s just better to keep him hanging on.

YOU CAN FIND out a lot about yourself by taking a weeklong
vacation. What are you like out of your element? Are you okay kicking back on the beach with a Corona all week? Or are you the neurotic tourist wiping down every surface and taking hundreds of pictures? Take this quiz so ya know before you go!
1. How far in advance do you pack?
A. Depends on what time the plane takes off. Duh. B. I start a couple of days beforehand and finish up the night before. C. I took two weeks off for a reason. And the reason is spending the first week packing. 2. How relaxed are you on the plane?
A. Sleeping like a baby on three martinis and a double dose of Xanax. B. I don’t like takeoffs and landings but otherwise I’m fine. C. As relaxed as a howler monkey on Red Bull. 3. You’ve landed and checked into your hotel room. What’s the first thing you do?
A. Throw the bags on the bed and don’t let the door hit us on the way out. B. We’ve traveled all day, let’s grab dinner somewhere close and call it an early night. C. I took two weeks off for another reason. And that reason is spending my first two days decompressing in the hotel room. 4. Your boyfriend caught the flu and is bedridden. What do you do?
A. What boyfriend? B. Take care of him until he feels better and we can enjoy the trip together. C. It’s obviously the plague. I call his parents and his personal trainer back home to break the bad news. 5. It’s your last day. What kind of souvenir are you taking back with you?
A. Herpes. B. A t-shirt and that vase we saw the first day when we went shopping in town. C. Nothing too over the top. A t-shirt, a polo, the set of wine glasses from the hotel gift shop, a timeshare and a baby boy.

Now Find Out What Kind Of Traveler You Are 1 – 7 points: Sometimes your devil-may-care attititude affects your fellow travelers. And by “sometimes,” we mean “always.” You’re the reason everyone has to sign a waiver before leaving. 8 – 16 points: If you were a cereal, they’d call you Moral Fiber. Never too low, never too high. But you might have more fun if you listened to the devil on your shoulder every now and then. 17 – 25 points: You’re kind of a mess, girl. Remember, nothing’s ever going to go exactly the way you planned. So dial it down a notch or twelve.
