THere IS nO greater country on earth today than the one in which we live. As Americans, we enjoy many freedoms, rights, and conveniences that citizens of other nations literally die trying to obtain. As we watch fireworks, eat hot dogs, and celebrate being American this July 4th, let’s not forget the many sacrifices of our ancestors who paved the path for our way of life.

It is in that spirit we must remember we are still fighting for equality as a community. As they fought with guns and cannons, let us fight with our voices and actions. We have made great headway in the past couple of years and we celebrate those accomplishments and the courage of those organizations, legislators and judges who have made equality a reality. Now, it is our job to continue this momentum, put aside our differences and stand together as one to achieve equality all over this great nation and especially here at home. Happy Independence Day!

A transparent interview with CNN's Out Anchor

DON LEMON By Dino Thompson-Sarmiento

Emmy award winning CNN anchor Don Lemon acknowledges publicly that he

is gay and a victim of child molestation in his new memoir Transparent. I have known Don for a few years and while doing this interview, I detected a happier and wiser man ... I applaud his bravery and hope telling his story not only brings him peace, but also enlightens the many readers of his new book.

Don, why this book and why now? I was approached to do a book about success and, after careful consideration; I thought to myself “why not do a book the makes a difference?” I wanted to write the truth about my life; I wanted to share who I was and where I came from. You share your experiences of being a victim of child molestation. Who did this to you? How did you cope? How did you recover? It was a friend of the family. I dealt with each incident individually; I healed in between each of the molestations. I believe grace healed me I was luckier than most that I could disconnect and let it be the past. I have had the pleasure of meeting your lovely Southern mother. How did she and the family deal withall that was revealed? The toughest part has been answering questions about my personal life. My mother has always been accepting but now she has had to face public questioning – and it’s tough for a parent. She is strong but I feel for her. Other members of the family don’t understand why I am “airing my dirty laundry.” 14

FENUXE.COM

Despite all of these challenges, I want to encourage folks to live their truth. Those who have the question, “is it ok to come out” I say YES it is ok. What have been the positives/negatives of sharing your personal story? I have had people reach out to me and say that they found the courage to come out and live their authentic lives because I came out publicly – that’s intense feedback. On the other hand I hate that my family has to live through it, too. The title of the book is “Transparent.” To what does that refer? There is no question off limits. This book has been liberating and freeing. I hope my candor can help people who are looking for authenticity. As a man who grew up in the South, I understand the challenges facing a gay man, a gay African- American man. I don’t want anyone to harm themselves because of these issues – I feel that as an adult man, I have to help however I can and this is my way. Don Lemon’s revealing book can be found at Outwrite Bookstore and Brushstrokes.

Pretty/Active By Carl Arbogast

SINCE JOHN SULLIVAN opened Boy Next Door in 1980 at the same Piedmont Avenue location where it sits today the store has had an impact on the community around them. While making all the 80s gays look, oh so, pretty they were also making a positive impact on the community as a whole. The owner became very active in the Midtown/LGBT community by getting involved in things like early versions of Atlanta Pride and other civic activities. Since John Sullivan opened Boy Next Door in 1980 on Piedmont Avenue the store has had a positive impact on the surrounding community. In the 80s, they were making us gays look oh so pretty while also having a wonderful impact on the community as a whole by getting involved in Atlanta Pride and other civic activities. John passed away in 1994, but the store has remained at the original location and in the family ever since. First his mother, Pauline, made sure the store stayed relevant and active. Now, the shop is owned by John’s uncle, Jim Smith, who took over in 2008. Jim has brought in Richard Shadix to revamp the store while still staying true to styles that have graced their racks since its inception.

The good news is there will now be something for every budget.

Richard says his main goal is to, “Make the store more unique with the same style and a mix of prices that are a little more accessible.” He is bringing in new, hot designers like Smith’s Sunglasses, Park & Ronen, and United Kingdom of Luke, but don’t worry, he is maintaining many of your favorite brands.

In addition to the new brands be on the lookout for new additions, remodels and updates which will make shopping for those sexy bathing suits even more fun. And for you boys who don’t have time to get out and shop they will be launching an e-commerce site in the very near future.

One of their main goals is to continue to support the community by holding more fashion shows at places like Blake’s, being more active in Atlanta Pride, and sponsoring charitable events with sexy boys prancing around in designer clothes. (Who doesn’t love that?!) There is no way John Sullivan knew that his store would still be thriving in 2011, but it just goes to show that when retail establishments support the community who support them, everything is possible. So, the next time you’re looking for that new summer look, check out Boy Next Door, cruise the new styles available, and say hello to Richard for us!

Independence Day Entertainment FINALLY, A PAID day off from work, so you sleep in late, real late, like 1:00 P.M. late. Then you somehow find the composure to grab a beach towel, mix a vodka-cran and stumble down to the pool. A couple hours pass and you're finally alert enough to reintroduce yourself to society. After many patios, sunshine, and a day full of your favorite libations, you drag your ass to bed, wishing the next day wouldn't come so early. Same old same old, year after year. Why not mix it up a little? We found three unique celebratory stellar ideas for this Independence Day.

Red, White, and Brew

For spectacular viewing of Centennial Olympic Park's Fireworks Show and a partaking of Jim and Nick's Barbecue, head to the top level of The Georgia Aquarium parking deck. Live music provided by The Yacht Rock Revue and beer highlighting various local and national brews will provide fun and relaxing 4th of July celebrations.

Georgia Aquarium (parking deck rooftop) 357 Luckie Street NW Atlanta, GA 30313 6:00 – 10:30PM

Sway to the Symphony

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will open their 4th season at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre with a Fourth of July Celebration at 8:00PM. The performance will include guest conductor Rob Fisher leading the Orchestra and the very sexy U.S. Army Chorus in an All-American celebration with the lovely Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. So sway away.

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre 2200 Encore Parkway Alpharetta, GA 30009 8:00PM – 12AM

Baby, Your a Firework

There are a number of firework displays and shows occurring around the city after dusk on July fourth. Can't decide which show to attend? Base your decision on location, surrounding activities, after-works events, and number of spectators. Here are our best bets for a good show:

Centennial Olympic Park Lenox Square Buckhead

The all day festival includes great food, live entertainment and music followed by the Airtran Airways Fireworks Spectacular. Festivities begin around 2:30PM, Fireworks show starts after 9PM. Marta is strongly encouraged for transportation.

18

FENUXE.COM

This year the 4th of July fireworks show at Lenox Square will feature over 4,000 shots, making it one of the largest shows in the country. Shop till you drop, then hop outside for an amazing spectacal of illuminating pops! Show scheduled to start at 9:40PM

Decatur Square

For those of you living in our neighboring city, this is definitely one not to miss. The Decatur celebration kicks off with a Pied Piper Parade at 6PM, followed by a Callanwolde Concert Band performance at 7PM at the Courthouse. Fireworks begin just after dark.

GREAt things are coming to atlanta (GREAT Board Members from left to right: Don Hunnewell, Chip O'Kelley, Paul Swicord, Brad Williams, Alan Collins, Philip Rafshoon, and Tyler Calkins)

By Carl Arbogast

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN all the gay nightclubs, bars, restaurants, retail establishments, and tourism industries all come together? GREAT things! That’s exactly what’s taking place right here in our city. A new organization called GREAT Atlanta has been formed with a primary objective of helping our local LGBT community thrive. “With America’s ongoing economic crisis we can not just sit back,” states Don Hunnewell, President of GREAT Atlanta, owner of Holey Glass and former gay bar owner, “Our [LGBT] business community is struggling to survive and we can’t continue to complain with more and more of our doors closing. Our business and community leaders must come together with energy and fresh ideas and that is exactly what’s happening with GREAT Atlanta.” GREAT stands for Gay Retail, Entertainment, and Tourism and has evolved from previous organization called BOA (Bar Owners Association). BOA was instrumental in the late 90s in working with the city to make Atlanta’s nightlife scene more vibrant. The time has now come for a multi-industry coalition to join forces to not only restore Atlanta’s nightlife scene, but to attract and retain more LGBT individuals and encourage those individuals to shop within the community. One of the key components to GREAT is education. “The great & open lifestyle that we have in Atlanta is made possible from the many open LGBT businesses.” says Philip Rafshoon, the owner of Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse and Vice President of GREAT, “It is important [that we] educate & remind our community of the role those businesses play in the community. Education is a key component of our alliance & will remain a big part of it to ensure that our community doesn’t take us for granted.” Look for amazing changes and exciting ideas coming to our community as we continue to solidify Atlanta as one of the go-to gay destinations. 20 FENUXE.COM

Top 5 Reasons to eat, shop, and drink from local gay-owned or gay-friendly businisses:

1. Shopping local puts three times as much money back into a community versus shopping at a big chain store and that means when you shop, eat, and drink at a local LGBT establishment you are investing in our local LGBT community, in your neighbors, and in yourself. 2. Shopping within the community supports those local businesses which give Atlanta it's unique, gay culture distinguishing us from other cities. 3. The more money we have in the community, the greater the voice we have in political matters. 4. Shopping within the community allows LGBT businesses to create better programming, hire more employees from within the community, and host more events thus attracting more tourists and new residents. 5. Non-profits also receive greater support - studies show that non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses. This means that organizations like Aid Atlanta, For the Kid, CHRIS Kids, Jerusalem House, Atlanta Pride, ALHI, Georgia Equality, PALS, Joining Hearts, and many other great organizations like these can receive more support and continue serving our community.

Join the LemonAIDS for AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run 2011

Get together with your friends, family, church, softball team or co-workers and create your own team to walk or run or join the LemonAIDS – anyone can join their team! Last year the LemonAIDS participated in AIDS Walk Atlanta & 5K Run for the first time and here’s what the team had to say about the experience: “The fundraising was the easy part. We’d ask people to join our team first and if they couldn’t, they’d make a donation without us having to ask for it.” “We had so much fun during the walk. It wasn’t until afterward that I stopped and thought about how proud I was of everyone on our team.” “It’s important for everyone, LGBT, straight, twisted and sideways to register. People living with HIV/AIDS are members of our community and we should all contribute what we can – that being our time or money.

Stonewall Then Stonewall now, 42 Years Young A Hotlanta Perspective By Dave Hayward

SUDDENLY MEN COULD SMOLDER, SING OH SO SEDUCTIVELY (“LOVE ME TENDER”), AND SWIVEL THEIR HIPS WITH ABANDON. THANKS, EL... Officially our lgbt civil and human rights movement began in the 1940s, via Harry Hay and the gay Mattachine Society (named after court jesters, and deliberately non-gay sounding), and Barbara Gittings and the lesbian Daughters of Bilitis (who was Bilitis?!). It was only after the Stonewall Bar riots in late June, 1969 in Greenwich Village that a critical mass of queers came out and started Gay Liberation Fronts, not only in New York but in every major city in the United States. Stonewall was our precursor to our own Independence Day, indeed.

I’m astonished when folks ask about our lgbt history in terms of, do you think Abraham Lincoln was really getting it on with his bunkmate Joshua Speed? As titillating as that may be, Abe and Josh did not then go forth and found Pride. We have to appreciate our own authentic heroes and sheroes for that, like Harry Hay and Barbara Gittings, and here locally Lorraine Fontana (who’s still fighting for our rights at Atlanta’s Lamdba Legal), and Berl At 19 in 1969, coming out openly gay to everyone Boykin, who is one of the few remaining conever occurred to me, or was anything I wanted to founders of Georgia’s Gay Liberation Front in do. Tips for Cheap (But Fun!)Travel By David “Davey Wavey” Jacques, gaytravel.com

This past week, my boyfriend and I wanted to embark on a fun, cheap and all-American getaway. Since Atlanta’s airport is so accessible and easy to navigate, we were sold on the idea of a relatively short flight to Boston, MA with a quick 90 minute ferry out to the very tip of Cape Cod. We gave ourselves a small budget for the adventure—and even with the ferry being an additional 79 bucks per person round trip, we made it happen! Call motels and inns directly. While booking online is super convenient, it’s always helpful to talk to a real person directly. They will also know of any last-minute cancellations or special discounts—which will increase your chance of finding a room in your budget. Travel off-peak. Our motel room was just $87 on a Thursday night. Come Friday—during any major holiday—that same room goes for $150. We saved $63 by taking our trip on an off-peak travel day. Don’t be taken advantage by high airfare costs. Instead be a savvy travelor and compare all your options by using websites like kayak. com and lastminute.com. You can even find good deals directly on sites like airtran.com and delta.com. If you aren’t constrained by dates, sometimes the cheapest way to travel is to use a flexible date search option. Being in Atlanta we have access to one of the busiest airports in the world which can get us great prices when we fly. Use your feet. While Provincetown has some convenient paid parking lots, we were able to find a free parking spot a short walk from downtown for a $10 savings. Some destinations also offer great public transit options—it’s an affordable and fun way to experience a city or town and meet new people.

Take advantage of the free stuff. The best things that Provincetown has to offer are free. Like the sights, sounds and incredible landscape. The beaches and nature trails are free—and absolutely breathtaking. Hanging out in the sand and getting a little sun charges the soul and doesn’t break the bank. Pack your own beverages. Once we arrived, for less than $10, we filled my backpack up with bottled water and beverages. Even better, bring along a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and help save the environment. Cheers! Take advantage of free food. Our motel offered a free continental breakfast. It wasn’t super fancy, but it was a free meal. Before booking your room, ask about any included meals—it can be a real money saver. Ask locals. I always try to befriend locals wherever I go. Friendly locals can be a tremendous resource—they are full of great recommendations and often know of free events (i.e., concerts, festivals, etc). Be friendly and wear your smile.

Dinner Party or TV Dinner? By Dino Thompson-Sarmiento

Matching your belt and shoes to the napkin rings and tablecloth, inviting the pretty one, the smart one, the funny one and hoping the flirty one doesn’t end up in the powder room with the bartender is just the beginning of planning the perfect dinner party. Then you need to wear the right cologne so it doesn’t clash with the aroma in the kitchen, keep an eye on your silverware so it doesn’t get confused as parting gifts and hope your sleepy pills don’t magically disappear from your nightstand.

Now, imagine adding Liza Minnelli, Sandra Bernhard & Raven Symone to the mix. Scared yet? Well, all the above is about to happen to celebrated Chef Rocco DiSpirito. I had the opportunity to chat with him about his new show “Rocco’s Dinner Party”. Rocco, tell me about “Rocco’s Dinner Party” and the purpose behind it? The concept behind the show has never been done before. It’s all about “WHY we cook not HOW we cook”. We are focusing on the celebration of cooking, having real human moments and making guests happy. What can we expect? Each week, three new chefs have one shot at impressing me by cooking their signature dish. The two strongest will advance to the next round, where they are challenged to develop a full menu in competing dinner parties’ for my high-profile guests. In addition, the food is only half the battle. Allowed one consultation with Jes Gordon, celebrity event producer, the chef’s must also design a unique party concept, as décor and ambiance will be judged alongside their food. Each episode will have a theme for which the chef’s must base their meal and dining experience around. High profile guests? Like who? Some of guests include Liza Minnelli , Sandra Bernhard and Christine Ebersole. Tune in to 26 FENUXE.COM

see the many special guests that drop by and the many funny and memorable moments. I’m definitely tuning in; all the elements for fun TV are present. From Chef DiSpirito, named the sexiest chef alive by People magazine, to delicious and exquisite foods and décor and then toss in an eclectic mix of celebrities candidly sharing dinner – for me it is a must watch. Gayin the USA By Michael Vorndran

LGBT Rights 2011: A Light at the End of the Tunnel? Being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender in 2011 means that you are riding a roller coaster of emotions. Some days the news from the front lines of equality is positively buoyant while other days it is downright dreary. You wake up in the morning with good news and go to bed at the end of the day with bad news.

The Past Over the last twelve months we have seen the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, President Obama has instructed the Department of Justice to stop defending the DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act) in court, more states passed pro-same-sex marriage laws and Home Depot stood their ground against the anti-LGBT American Family Associations. Ahh, it felt good basking in the glow of acceptance. It all seemed too good to be true. And sadly, thanks to a small, vocal faction of America, it was. 28 FENUXE.COM

The enveloping glow of acceptance diminished when Speaker of the House John Boehner vowed to defend DOMA in the face of the President's refusal to do so. Then antigay rhetoric got darker with horrible debates on the floor of several state legislatures and the light went completely dark when a rash of anti-gay-bullying related suicides sadly moved across the nation.

With all that said; where does it leave the state of gay America, is there a light at the end of the tunnel that will never go out? The answer is a resounding maybe. As of this writing the light gets brighter with five states plus the District of Columbia offering full marriage equality, seven states offering a form of relationship protection similar to marriage and three other states with some form of relationship protections. And of course the light gets dimmer with the fact that there are now 29 states that have some form of constitutional ban on same-sex marriages. A spotlight should be given to California for a second because in 2008 California voters banned same-sex marriage with the passing of Proposition 8. That law has since been ruled unconstitutional under U.S. law paving the way for a battle that could lead all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States. If Prop 8 is proven to be unconstitutional under the US Constitution that could mean all the other state bans would not be valid.

The Present

The important thing to remember is each member of the LGBT community has the ability of keep the world of LGBT rights in a happy place by supporting legislators who support the cause. Sadly, in the 2010 midterm election the House had a net loss of 22 pro-LGBT representatives, which means there are now 22 less people helping the community achieve equality.

very good sign given the fact that some polls as recent as 2005 had acceptance at about 45% or less.

The Future Overall the state of gay American in 2011 is good, not great, but good. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and thankfully it is a reflection from a drag queens favorite tiara and not the oppressive light of an anti-equality train. A lot of positive steps have been made over the last twelve months to help to bring the LGBT community out from the shadows, but there is still plenty to be done before the community can rest. The road to equality is not a sprint, it is a marathon or at least a 5k. So, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to sit on your bar stool and order another Godiva Chocolate Pomegranate Twist or are you going to get out there and do your part to protect your rights?

NOW WHAT?

Be Informed Get Involved Stay Interested

Equality is not the only fight in this battle. There is also the fight to be certain sexual orientation and gender identity is included in all anti-discrimination acts at both the federal and state level. Also make sure it is included in anti-bullying pieces of legislation as well. Here in Georgia Jeff Graham, Executive Director for Georgia Equality, points out “Our main focus right now is to get GA House Bill 630 passed.” The bill will prohibit discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Graham also believes, “That we are headed in the right track, but it is going to take a lot of work. It isn't easy. It isn't quick, but if the LGBT community works together equality is only a matter of time.” Another positive sign for Georgia: there has not been a single piece of anti-LGBT legislation put up for a vote in over 3 years. The brightest news off all is the tolerance and acceptance of gays and lesbians is on the rise. According to a recent Pew Research study 58% of Americans believe homosexuality should be accepted. Those numbers are a FENUXE.COM

Dear Mary, So, I’ve always kind of kept to myself and did my own thing. I am kind of the all-American type. I was born in Cobb County and after graduating from Kennesaw State I landed a job in downtown Atlanta. I rented an apartment in midtown and I am trying to get involved in the local scene. I guess this is my problem: I am excited to live in town, but I feel kind of isolated. Since I was born and raised in the suburbs I don’t immediately come across as gay. When people finally find out they either think I have been hiding it or they think I am trying to be someone I’m not. I like your column and the wacko advice you give people. Give me some crazy advice of how to fit in and it might just work! Signed,

Awaiting a response on Argonne

Dear Aragorn (the LOTR guy?): Are you telling me that people make judgments about how you live your life based on the way you dress, talk and present yourself without bothering to get to know the real you? What kind of place is it that you live in?! Just normal middle America you say? Oh yeah, that is what we do here. So, it is your responsibility to straighten…er…clear up any areas of misconception. You can easily work into conversation the fact that you’re gay without it being awkward. For example, when a coworker asks you what you did this weekend, simply reply “the boyfriend and I did some yard work, played video games, hung out. And then we had hot gay sex.” Or, if you’re single, you might tell them “I slept in, then went for a long run and took a shower, meditating on how I am attracted solely to males and not females.” Totally normal conversation nuggets! Thank me later. Or just make the “interested in males” portion of your Facebook public. Every new person you meet is going to go look at it anyway. Much love, mo’ thugs, holla atcha girl,

FIREWORKS, BBQ COOKOUTS,

and furniture sales, Independence Day is just around the corner. But for this 4th of July it’s time to contemplate your involvement in our patriotic process. Do you prefer to take a back seat ride and let your politicians do the work? Are you a radical screaming your for the Land-of-TheFree from the street corners? Or are you somewhere in between, taking your red-white-and-blue in moderate doses? Take a second, answer these five questions. It may provide some insight into your patriotic status.

1.Independence Day falls on a Monday this year, you: A. Knew that already! I scheduled the day off weeks ago. Bring on the fireworks! B. Well, since my company honors the paid holiday I might head up to the mountains for the weekend for some much needed R&R. C. Oh, I take off every Monday. That’s when they offer an additional 50% off all clearance at my favorite clothing boutique.

2. Red, White and Blue means to you: A. Duh, those are the colors we live, breathe, and die for. U.S.A., U.S.A.! B. You know, when you say the colors out of order, they totally lose their connotation, blue, white, red. C. O.M.G. How did you know the colors of my Louis Vuitton Monogram Stars Beach Towel?!

3. Sarah Palin: A. Don’t get me started on this mockery of our entire political system! B. She’s got a year and a half to prove herself – GO! C. She’s so haute. Any woman in a steel blue power suit has my vote! Palin/Gingrich 2012!

4. What will you be serving at this year’s July 4th Cookout? A. American Food. American Burgers with American Fries, and American Corn on the Cob grown by American Farmers who drive American Chevy’s! B. I will not be serving anything because if the weather cooperates you can find me on the patio at Joes, takin’ in some sun with all my favorite patriots. C. The worst thing about a cookout is the paper plates. Why won’t they start making disposable fine china?

5. You’re at Burkharts and this sexy Russian fella keeps eying you from across the bar, you:

I absolutely love other cultures. One time I met someone from South Georgia – he was absolutely intriguing!

1 – 7 points: Easy tiger, you may want to chill just a bit. Someone once told you to shout your love for this country from the rooftops. You took their advice to a new level. Like a stiff martini, red white and blue is def the way-to-go, but sometimes just in moderation. 8 – 16 Points: Did you remember Flag Day this year? Probably not. While you aren’t the type to attend every Pro-USA Function known, you do enjoy and celebrate the freedoms you get being a citizen of the greatest country on Earth. 17 – 25 points: There, there puddin’. Sometimes understanding what the masses already know is beneath you. You prefer to look at things in a different light, a material light. And think about it like this, some say your material attitude is the American way!

HEy Girl HEy Hey y’alllll! I hope everyone is enjoying my new column. I’m glad to have the flexibility to talk about whatever is on my mind. It’s great to have a place to share my thoughts with everyone. Last week a friend who was going through some drama called to ask me for some advice. He was so upset about what one of his ‘friends’ was saying about him behind his back that he was literally losing sleep over it. He asked me “How do you deal with people like that?” I replied “Why do you care about what they say?” I realize now more than ever, it’s a self-esteem issue when you care so much about what others think of you. There is a great quote that says “What other people think of me is none of my business.” I love it because it’s true! People will always talk about each other… it’s a given. But when you’re confident in who you are, you care less about what other people may think. When you think about it, we really want people to hate us for who we are, not like us for who they think we are.

I shared with him “The Paradoxical Commandments” by Kent M. Keith which basically says don’t stop being who you are because of someone else. Here are a few of my favorites quotes: “People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.” Powerful words! I said to him “Don’t waste the rest of your life giving energy to people or things that don’t matter”. “Instead, be the best you know how to be!” And that’s fabulous!

Love and lashes,

Mary Edith Pitts
