FENUXE 5.3.2012 Very recently I overheard a conversation between two

gay men who vehemently agreed all Atlanta gay men do not dare go OTP (Outside the Perimeter). There is an old joke in Atlanta’s gay community that the Midtown gays don’t venture out of the city, never experiencing what Georgia has to offer. Even here in our office we playfully tease the sole employee who courageously makes shelter in Mableton, far beyond the security of 10th and Piedmont.

Later that day I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed spotting posts upon posts of vacation photos of my fellow gay friends. But how can this be? I thought the gays never leave Atlanta. Why would they venture off to the Georgia mountains, Florida beaches, or worse, Europe? Don’t they know to stubbornly stay put in Midtown?

Though we joke about OTP, truth be told, our community is a very adventurous bunch. We are adventurous because of more than just the obvious reasons—we’re often childless and possess ample free time. We also understand risktaking. We took a risk when we came out, and we take risks each day we demand full equality. So what’s new about charting off on an unfamiliar destination? We love to travel and look forward to experiencing a new culture at any opportunity.

CRIB CHATTER Making Home Ownership A Zipity Duda day!

Funny the discussions that come up on the balcony of the Georgian Terrace during Change of Seasons t-dance! Chatting with another host committee member, I was pointing to the building where one of my cheap government foreclosures is located and he asked what closing costs run these days. The topic of title insurance came up and I mentioned he better make sure he gets his own title insurance to protect his interest and that not all title insurance is the same. Hopefully, you will find the following real life example helpful. One of the most important things a buyer should do is make certain that clear title is conveyed at closing. The best way to do this is to work with an attorney that renders a title opinion that reviews at least 30 – 50 years of documents in the chain of title. Today, many foreclosure law firms are using title examinations provided by the foreclosing banks. Most often these titles only go back in the chain of title to the date the borrower

being foreclosed upon took title. This could be a title examination that is only 3-5 years back in the chain of title. This can be extremely problematic for purchasers. Often the prior title insurance company that insured title for the lender’s loan that is being foreclosed will insure over the title defect. However, this does not mean that the title defect cannot cause problems in the future. Recently, my real estate attorney Amee Davis had a closing transaction where she was handling the resale of a property that the seller purchased from a bank that had foreclosed on the property. The Seller had purchased a title insurance policy. When Amee completed her title she found an open Home Equity Line of Credit that predated the loan which was foreclosed upon. The prior law firm was unaware of the open Line of Credit because the title examination they completed did not date back far enough to find this issue. When Amee tried to obtain a release for the open line of credit that was reflected on title, she was informed that the line of credit was still open and had a remaining balance. The seller’s title insurance policy was responsible for insuring and handling the claim to clear the title but his closing was delayed for several weeks.

Student Leader Was Not Ousted Over Gay Prom

Supporting a more gay-inclusive prom at Alpharetta High School did not cost Reuben Lack his position as student body president, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Story ruled Monday. Rather, it was Lack’s poor leadership and unwillingness to cooperate with other students and faculty that led to his dismissal, Story said as he dismissed Lack’s First Amendment lawsuit against the school.

Gay ‘Godfather’ Runs for State House Seat Ken Britt, a 2010 Fenuxe 50 honoree who has been a pillar of gay Atlanta for decades, is running for the state House of Representatives seat for District 56, which runs from Ansley Park, through Midtown and to the Capitol View neighborhood. Britt has been a tireless champion of LGBT issues, from being instrumental in the early days of AIDS activism to recently chairing the national board of the Human Rights Campaign. He has lent his passion and generosity to organizations from Georgia Equality to YouthPride, and as the executive director of one of the most powerful law firms in Atlanta, Britt defied the notion that you could not be openly gay while excelling professionally.

Atlanta Falcon Wide Reciever Roddy White apologized after a rhetorical question he posed on Twitter (“Would u rather be gay or straight”) was considered by some to be homophobic. “OK people I apologize for saying the word gay I know it’s a sensitive subject and a athlete of my stature should not use it,” the egotistical athlete tweeted the next day. He added “#foruhatersmiddlefinger.”

Obama Balks on Workplace Protections for Gays President Barack Obama’s administration recently informed gay rights leaders that he would not sign an executive order banning LGBT discrimination among federal contractors, instead opting to focus on passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. “We are extremely disappointed with this decision,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “The unfortunate truth is that hard-working Americans can be fired simply for being gay or transgender. 14 : MAY 3, 2012

INSIDE LOOK

GLAAD is Glad with New President Herndon Graddick Dino Thompson-Sarmiento, Fenuxe Contributor

In mid-April, the board of directors of GLAAD—the nation’s LGBT media advocacy and watchdog group—named Herndon Graddick as its new leader. A GLAAD veteran, Herndon has served as the organization’s deputy director of media programs. He has worked fervently to create an LGBT-inclusive media landscape and share stories that nurture acceptance of LGBT people and build support for equality. Shortly after being named president, Herndon graciously accepted an interview with Fenuxe. Dino: Herndon, we congratulate you on your new role with GLAAD and thank you for taking a few moments to engage with our Fenuxe readers. I hear you’re a Southerner. Where are you from? Herndon: Thank you, Dino and Fenuxe. I am happy to chat with you and your many readers in the South. I am originally from Mobile Bay and grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. I then attended UCLA and currently live in New York City. Dino: Before you began your path within GLAAD, what was your work history? Herndon: Previously, I was a producer within CNN [Graddick contributed to the creation of daily primetime news and current events programming such as “Paula Zahn Now,” “Anderson Cooper 360” and “Live From the Headlines”]. I also worked for CURRENT TV, the youth-oriented news and entertainment network created by former Vice President Al Gore. And I served as a supervising producer at E! Networks. Dino: In what direction would you like to take G L A A D under your watch?

Herndon: I would like to see GLAAD continue to do its good work and support the LGBT community through effective campaigns promoting equality. Equality would be inclusive of employment, family, healthcare, etc. GLAAD is about culture change and fighting defamation and ensuring fair and accurate representation of the LGBT community—getting what we deserve. Dino: Being a Southerner, you understand the challenges LGBT folks face within their families and community. What can GLAAD to do help? Herndon: Providing effective national media opportunities—other than just the local angles to these areas—is important. I welcome feedback from these communities as to how we can help. Dino: The “Stand Up For Ellen” campaign was extraordinary and reflects the power of the LGBT community. This example illustrates what we as a minority group can accomplish by uniting. Do you see this as a trend in having our voices heard? Herndon: Yes. We at GLAAD have the resources and the platform to educate the country and our voices will be heard! Dino: As the Latino community continues to grow nationally, LGBT issues within this group are becoming more and more visible. One example is the alarmingly high number of HIV/ AIDS cases. What can GLAAD do to bring light to this concerning issue? Herndon: Excellent question. GLAAD is about culture change. We think it is important to tell the story of all groups and be all inclusive. Currently we have programs in place to target the Spanishspeaking population, and we will continue to develop campaigns to bring attention to these issues. Dino: Herndon, thank you. We look forward to you visiting us in the South. Anything else you’d like to share with Fenuxe readers? Herndon: I would like to thank everyone for their support, and I would like to let everyone know that I welcome the community’s feedback on how we can embrace change and head in a new direction together.

A Quarter

Century

of Success

Ryan Lee, Associate Writer, News & Current Events

When the first Atlanta Human Rights Campaign Dinner was held in 1988, gay Americans were in the throes of an unchecked plague, had recently been declared criminals by the U.S. Supreme Court, and remained shunned by much of society. Still, the theme for that first Atlanta HRC dinner implored gay Atlantans to “Dare to Dream, Dare to Be.” The lofty theme crystallized into a more explicit goal at the next year’s dinner: “In Our Lifetime.” In the two-and-a-half decades since those early dinners the world – politics, entertainment, social acceptance – has evolved at a rate that would have been hard to envision in the late 1980s. From taming HIV/AIDS to becoming a cultural constituency, we have experienced a lifetime of change in less than a quarter century. The theme for this year’s Atlanta HRC Dinner & Silent Auction, “Be Part of Equality,” invites us to absorb the successes we’ve achieved, and enlists us in the push to achieve full equality. While there is surely work that is left to be done, the Atlanta HRC dinner’s silver jubilee is about celebrating how remarkably far we’ve come in a relatively short time. The keynote speaker for this year’s dinner, which takes place May 5 at the Hyatt Regency downtown, is U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), who has a chance to take our movement to another historic height this fall. Baldwin, who was the first openly gay person elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, is hoping to break another barrier by 20 : MAY 3, 2012

becoming the first openly gay person to serve in the U.S. Senate. In addition to offering a motivational pep rally for Baldwin during her historic bid, the Atlanta HRC dinner will feature actor Sean Hayes, best known for his role as Jack on “Will & Grace.” The Emmy Award-winning funnyman, who came out as gay in 2010, will be receiving the HRC Visibility Award. Local heroes who have advanced LGBT equality in Atlanta will also be honored. This year’s Leon Allen & Winston Johnson Community Leadership Award will be presented to the Rev. Phillip Thomason, the minister of outreach and pastoral care at St. Mark United Methodist Church, who has guided the congregation’s LGBT-welcoming efforts since 1990. The Health Initiative, an organization that started in 1996 and has continuously expanded its mission to address the evolving health concerns of Atlanta’s LGBT community, will be honored with the Dan Bradley Humanitarian Award at the dinner. The non-profit was originally known as the Atlanta Lesbian Cancer Initiative, then broadened its scope and changed its name to the Atlanta Lesbian Health Initiative in 2006. In the last year, the group underwent a new name change to The Health Initiative, which reflects its goal of addressing health concerns among all sectors of the LGBT community. Also during the dinner, “American Idol” alumna Frenchie Davis will take the stage to entertain the crowd, which usually draws more than one thousand attendees and raises more than a quartermillion dollars.

As a Mississippi native I’m well aware of the bad rap often awarded my home state. So I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me to jump off a shrimp boat after I suggested vacationing there. But trust me, the Mississippi Gulf Coast serves as both a relaxing getaway and an entertainment hot spot. I recommend staying in Biloxi, which allows you easy access to other Gulf Coast towns and is only a one-hour drive to New Orleans and Mobile. Check into one of the city’s many casino resorts—perhaps the elegant Beau Rivage or the hip Hard Rock. Aside from gambling, the casinos feature fine-dining restaurants, endless buffets and top-notch entertainment. In fact, the summer lineup includes Melissa Etheridge, Barenaked Ladies, Wynonna Judd, Daughtry, Joan Rivers, Vicki Lawrence and Duran Duran, just to name a few. Once you’ve had your feel of concerts and comedy, take a picturesque drive along Beach Boulevard with its antebellum homes, artsy shops and popular eateries. On the west coast, stop by The Buttercup or Trapani’s in Bay St. Louis (my favorite coastal town) for a delicious meal. Other notable restaurants include Shaggy’s in Pass Christian and Hula’s in Diamondhead; both overlook a marina and are perfect for sipping cocktails at sunset. In Gulfport, I suggest the Half Shell Oyster House and Lookout 49. One of my favorite aspects of the coast is its thriving arts community. A few popular shops include Clay Creations and Gallery 220 in Bay St. Louis, Negrotto’s in Biloxi and Moran’s Art Studio in Ocean Springs. It’s been eight years since I lived on the Gulf Coast and I still miss its serenity and easy-going vibe. I don’t visit as often as I like, but when I do, I return to Atlanta refreshed and relaxed.

Hands down, one of the best advantages about Atlanta is our pride festival. Because our pride occurs each year in October, we get the awesome opportunity to visit Pride in other cities without missing a beat back home. That being said, it’s time to start thinking about which out-of-town pride you’ll partake in this June. How about New York? Since legalizing gay marriage last summer, the city has become even more of a destination for our community. This year won’t be any different with an amazing Pride march planned for June 24. And where should you stay? A destination within a destination—YOTEL New York, the swankiest and most stylish brand-new hotel the city has to offer.

recommend the Passion Plantation Punch. If a gay brunch is in order try out Eat Yo Brunch, which takes place each Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Dohyo on FOUR. This is a great way to relieve your post-party hangover. For more information and to plan your stay, visit www.yotel.com

So what makes YOTEL New York so special? Well, for starters, your check-in is conducted through airline style kiosks, ensuring very little wait time. Also, if you’ve got places to visit before check-in hours you can store your luggage with YOBOT, the world’s first robotic luggage concierge. Aside from the hi-tech check in, YOTEL offers comfortable “premium” cabins, a great place to rest after a long day of festivities. The cabins include motorized moving beds, monsoon showers, free WiFi and unlimited complimentary coffee, tea and other hot drinks, all in under 200 square feet of space. Before you head out on the town take a look around the hotel, as you may find everything you need within the walls of YOTEL. Level FOUR is where you’ll find food, drinks and even a nightclub. Napa Valley Succumbing to peer pressure isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We basically do anything celebrities tell us anyway, so why shouldn’t we listen to Arnold, Betty and the Jonas Brothers when they recommend visiting California? Dang those effective commercials.

(Not So Gay) Nightlife

So, if you want to be one of the cool gays, you’ll need to visit the wine country. All the popular homos stay at gay-owned Chateau de Vie or the gay-friendly Meadowlark Country House, both in the city of Calistoga. Oh, FYI, Meadowlark doesn’t oppose nudity in select areas of its 20-acre estate, so you can pack light if you’re feeling adventurous.

But, if you prefer your thrill-seeking fully clothed, Napa Valley offers plenty of activities for those who consider themselves “simply outdoorsy.” Experience the Russian River from a unique perspective as you kayak down the river and enjoy a picnic on the river bank with the Healdsburg Kayak Tour. For a bird’s-eye view of Napa, you’ll need to hop in a hot air balloon—unlike Dorothy, who missed her chance. Thanks to Calistoga Hot Air Balloons, you can float over vineyards, wineries, the Palisade Cliffs, Mount Saint Helena and California’s Old Faithful Geyser.

When you’re ready to mellow out, visit Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga or Pride Mountain Vineyards in St. Helena. We got excited about the latter one, too. “Pride” is the family name, but go visit them anyway. Can’t make it through a vacation without gaying it up? Sadly, there are no listings for Napa gay establishments. However, there is a not-for-profit social group called Napa Guerilla Gay Bar that turns selected venues “gay for a day.” You can also visit the Napa Valley Opera House between June 22-July 1 to see a production of “Cabaret.” Or just fly into San Francisco, wave your gay flag and then drive an hour-and-a-half north to Napa Valley.

Well, maybe you can teach life a lesson. The next time you chat with a sexy man from—let’s say, Cologne, Germany— you should book the next nine-hour flight to Europe and travel the 4,500 miles to see him. Check into your room at the Barcelo Cologne City Center, which offers free Wi-Fi and spa facilities. Now, arrange a romantic first encounter with your potential foreign husband at Hahnentorburg Castle, located conveniently near your hotel. You two instantly connect, so you head off with your handsome guide to tour Germany’s fourth-largest city. Home to more than 30 museums and tons of galleries, Cologne provides plenty of opportunities for you to soak up the local culture with—let’s call him—Niklas. If you’d like to surprise Niklas with a gift, head to Schildergasse, the busiest shopping street in Europe. Goodness! All that walking and shopping left you ravenous. Grab a seat at Café Bastard for an intimate rooftop lunch. With a full belly, take a walk along the Rhine River or bask in the sun along the banks of Aachener Weiher, a pond popular with the local gays. In fact, you’ve noticed quite a bit of “family” while touring the city. Did we forget to mention the city is the gay and lesbian capital of Germany? Oh, the temptation! Look at all those burly bears going into the club named Cox. And there’s Station 2b, a leather and fetish bar. You may just want to pop in to see what all the fuss is about. Yes, there are a lot of hot Germans here. Wait. Where are you going? What about Niklas? Well, it is your vacation. Better luck next time, Niklas.

Listen here, Mr. Cranky Pants. Your 2(x)ist underwear is in a wad, and you need to deal with it pronto before you punch a Park Atlanta attendant in the face. You need a healthy dose of sunshine, ocean and Mai Tais. Once you set foot on the welcoming island of Tahiti in the southern Pacific Ocean all your worries of mind-numbing traffic, ridiculous liquor laws and bogus parking tickets will melt away. Go rest up in your overwater bungalow or wash off the smog in one of the freshwater pools at the InterContinental Resort Tahiti in Faa’a. Don’t you feel better? Even that vein in your forehead quit throbbing. With your nerves at ease, you can spend your time finding ways to get wet. Perhaps wake boarding, jet skiing, parasailing, shark and ray feeding, windsurfing, scuba diving or snorkeling? Or maybe you prefer to whet your appetite? Enjoy a meal at the open-air restaurant Pink Coconut or cozy up to your beau for a romantic dinner at Le Cocos. Your hotel also features dining options with Tiare and Le Lotus, an overwater gourmet restaurant. Now you’re relaxed and ready for clubbing. But don’t expect your regular routine of gay-oriented bar hopping. Tahiti’s nightlife is low key, and, because of its antidiscrimination laws and collective sense of unity, the island doesn’t offer gay-specific clubs. However, Le Piano Bar in the capital of Papeete attracts mostly gay patrons with its late-night drag shows and drag queen servers.

If Mexican restaurants were men, I’d be a hoe. I can’t even begin to count how many taquerias and cantinas I’ve gone through since moving to Atlanta nearly eight years ago. Some left a bad taste in my mouth, while others kept me begging for more. Call me what you will, but I simply can’t choose just one, as each of my regulars brings something special to the table. Every time I swing through Castleberry Hill, I can’t help but think of No Mas. Possibly the most handsome of the bunch, No Mas possesses alluring good looks and awakens the voyeur in me. But there’s more to No Mas than just a pretty exterior. I’ve never tasted a better smoky salsa. Another interest of mine is Pure Taqueria. I stumbled into Pure by chance one evening on one of my frequent trips to Inman Park, and I’m seriously thankful for that encounter. Edgy and modern, Pure delivers a unique perspective when it comes to fulfilling my hunger pangs. I can’t resist the corn-masa turnovers stuffed with chicken, three cheeses and sweet onions. And, god, can Pure pour a drink. I doubt there’s a stiffer cocktail in town. The Michele Margarita with El Jimador anejo and Gran Marnier floater really does the trick. Then there’s Bone Garden. The bad boy of the bunch, Bone Garden delivers sex appeal on a plate. My appetite for the Chicharron taco with fried pork rind borders on insatiable, and the Camarone enchilada with garlic-sauteed shrimp is sinfully seductive. My West Midtown fling often makes a pig of me, but I don’t feel guilty enough to end it. Of all my favorites, though, my fondest memories belong to Las Margaritas. Easy-going and welcoming, Las Margaritas shared a special bond with my baby sister and me. We’d indulge in a pitcher-too-many of margaritas while we laughed and bitched about life. Even when I shamelessly (and drunkenly) flirted with a cute bus boy, Las Margaritas didn’t hold it against me. Ah, good times. Now, if I can just decide where to spend Cinco de Mayo…

INTERVIEW

WThe Quicksand orshipping

He Walks On Robert Harling gave us ‘Steel Magnolias’ & ‘GCB’ and we love him for it Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer, Lifestyle & Culture For all the Marks, Ricks and Steves in the world, gay life just wouldn’t be the same without Robert Harling. In 1987, the Louisiana native’s play “Steel Magnolias” hit the stage, with the beloved film version debuting two years later. And the gays have been quoting lines from the movie ever since. Following his mammoth success of “Steel Magnolias,” Robert contributed more gay favorite films with “Soapdish,” “The First Wives Club” and “The Evening Star.” With the new ABC series “GCB,” he’s done it once again. Based on the novel “Good Christian Bitches” by Kim Gatlin, the TV show about a group of wealthy Dallas women is quickly becoming another homo staple. A huge “Steel Magnolias” fan, Fenuxe writer Shannon Jenkins tracked Robert down to discuss his iconic contributions to queer cinema favorites.

Shannon: What interested you in bringing “GCB” to television? Robert: I love characters who are struggling to be good and fighting against everything that happens in our world today—the choices we make and how we try to make amends for the things we do wrong. Also, I like comedy. I like women. I love the women in the South and Texas. That’s what attracted me—the chance to work with a fabulous ensemble of talented women. The GC Boys, as I call them, are also great. It was irresistible. It’s not any kind of satire send-up. It’s a humorous and affectionate look at how the one percent might live. Shannon: The relationship between Cricket (Miriam Shor) and Blake (Mark Delkin) is particularly interesting. They’re married, he’s gay, she’s straight and they fulfill their sexual needs elsewhere. Robert: The network really became enamored with that in the very early days and became protective and supportive of that relationship because we’d never seen it before. I’ve always been fascinated—because I know this for a fact—I have friends who are married couples and the 40 : MAY 3, 2012

husband is gay and the wife isn’t. They always generally have the best relationships and marriages in the room. I just found that really fascinating. The Cricket and Blake story line has given me the opportunity to explore that. It’s really been one of the most popular aspects of the show. Where it’s going, I don’t know because it’s an exploration. Shannon: What were you looking for when you casted Cricket and Blake? Robert: With this show in particular, when the right person walks in, you say, “That’s it. We got , em.” When Miriam Shor walked in for Cricket I said, “There is no one else who can do this role.” On top of it she’s just an extraordinary person. She’s a joy to be with and Mark, too. As a side note, they have become such good friends offscreen and I try to always listen to their banter because it can be very useful in the script. One day they were doing a “Spartacus” scene for no reason at all, and I thought it was so hysterical. It was in the script within 12 hours. Shannon: The show is full of eye candy. What were you expecting from the male cast members beside good looks? Robert: We needed men who were really strong

INTERVIEW because our women are incredibly strong. So we needed the GC Boys to be the perfect foils for them. They had to be Texas guys and be able to pretend they’re in relationships with these women who are so outrageous. You want somebody who can stand up to the women and be as strong as they can be and be as funny as they can be and also have that Texas swagger. They have to be believable Texas men. And they all had to be comic. Also, these women are beautiful, and they married beautiful men. Shannon: It’s a fabulous cast. So, what attracted you to the female leads? Robert: Their unbelievable talent for one thing. Actually, Annie [Potts] who plays GiGi, is someone I’ve known for 26 years, and I’ve always wanted to work with her but never had the chance. I think she’s extraordinary. Annie, in her career, doesn’t have the tradition of playing very glamorous characters. But I thought, “This woman is a zillionaire. She’s going to wear lots of jewels. Annie’s gonna love this.” So, when I created the character, Annie was speaking in my head, and we were lucky enough to get her. We weren’t able to really secure [Kristin Chenoweth] to play the role of Carlene until almost the night before we shot the pilot. When I found out we got her, I said, “With that voice we’ve got to put her in the choir. She’s gotta sing in the pilot.” So I rewrote all that the night before we shot it to incorporate Kristen’s talents. Then we find out Miriam sings. She’s been a Broadway star. What drew them to me was the fact that they were so talented and so right for the roles. Now what makes me obsessed with them is finding out how much talent they have and being able to use as much of it as we can in the show.

Shannon: Another brilliant cast! So, what is your favorite Steel Magnolias quote? Robert: You know it’s funny because playwrights always have weird ones. They’re not things you would think. The one I like the best is one Truvy says, “I should have known Louie had problems when his imaginary playmates wouldn’t play with him.” I love that one. Shannon: I love all the quotes and the strong female characters. What is it about strong women that inspires you so much? Robert: I was lucky while growing up to be surrounded by both men and women who really defined themselves by humor. But, the thing about women, especially Southern women, they’re not afraid to show their emotions. It allows you as a writer to really go for it. If you look at the history of the characters I’ve created they are all people who really are about displaying their emotions, which is so fun to write. Men tend to be more reserved; they don’t divulge as much. Great women characters tend to express more, and that gives me more tools to work with. My life has been shaped by extraordinary women—my sister, my mother, my aunts, my neighbors. They sort of gave me my career.

Shannon: Well, I love “GCB” but I have to talk a little about Steel Magnolias if you don’t mind. Robert: Oh please! I love my Magnolias! Shannon: Are you involved in the TV remake filming in Atlanta? Robert: No. But, it actually stems out of Atlanta. Several years ago Kenny Leon [who founded the True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta] did a [mixed-race] version of the show. I kept hearing how brilliant it was. Even the New York Times wrote about it. But I was traveling and wasn’t able to get there. That’s always stuck in my head. I just would have loved to have seen Kenny Leon’s production. So the 25th anniversary of the play is this year. Lifetime came to me and said, “We’d like to make it an event.” I was thinking the movie exists so why do that unless you’re going to do something really fresh and look at it in a whole new way. So I told them about this production Kenny Leon did and they just thought it was great. Within two weeks they had put together this cast of Phylicia Rashad, Queen Latifah, Jill Scott and Alfre Woodard, and I was like, “Wow!” FENUXE.COM : 41

Dear Mary,

Dear M.O.M.,

My best friend and I take a trip every year for Memorial Day weekend, and we always have a blast. However, I’m interested in visiting Pensacola to experience all the gay debauchery. My buddy would never go for this. He’s a bit of a prude, and I’m hankering for drunk, slutty beach bums. I love him to death but I need a vacation that involves less sight-seeing and more man action. What to do?

Let me answer your question with a question: do you have a twin willing to pretend to be you for the weekend?

Signed, Men Over Museums

No? Well that does complicate things. Can’t gay debauchery and pleasant sight-seeing peacefully coexist? Why don’t you go out trolling for sloppy beach booty (ew) one night by your lonesome and bring one back with you to drag along on all the sightseeing? Your friend can gaze at true beauty and you can gaze at the red thread-like lines on your new beau’s eyeballs and become aware, in the harsh light of the morning, that your surfer dude is probably closer to 45 than 19. While your bud is drinking in the rich culture and scenery of America’s oldest city (or something…isn’t it…something like that? Who even knows) you can grow more and more concerned that vacation boyfriend might actually be a meth addict and not just a fun party boy and oh God where’s your watch? He took it right off your wrist! That was a gift!

If you’ve got a problem for Mary to solve, e-mail mary@fenuxe.com Mary is in no way qualified to give advice to others, and that is why we love her.

Holler Poodles. I’m so excited to announce that Blake’s on the Park has asked me to host “Brain Freeze Trivia” every Monday night at 11. We’re giving away $250 to the winning team, so come early and sign up your team! Prizes will also be awarded to the winner of each of four rounds. You don’t want to miss out on this! It’s gonna be so much fun with all the hot boys and trivia and girls and hot boys and prizes and hot boys and liquor and hot boys. Plus they’re gonna have hot boys and great prizes. I hope you’ll come out to support us. BTW, what are your summer travel plans? So many places to go, so many sights to see, and so many men to do meet. Since I have to stay out of the sun and maintain my Robert Pattinson moon glow, sunny beach destinations rarely show up on my travel radar. However, I must admit, my favorite summer travel trips have often included cruise ships. I’ve been on about six or seven cruises, and I have to say it’s about the most relaxing vacation I can think of taking. There’s always something going on but you can do things when you want to or don’t want to. Food is always available and is included in your ticket price—girls did you hear that? —it’s FREE!!! Most cruise lines also have nicer restaurants on board that you can pay a little extra to get a gourmet meal. We went to an Italian restaurant and were served a 15-course meal. No kidding. We waddled back to our cabins, and I’m sure the boat was tipping all the way. The best part about cruising to me is your destination comes to you. You leave San Juan one day, and the next day you’re in an exotic

locale. Fabulous! No packing/re-packing suitcases and all that mess. And then there are the men! When I got on the ship in San Juan, I thought I had entered gay heaven—gay men as far as the eye can see. Or at least that’s what I thought. No one bothered to tell me that straight men in San Juan enjoy waxing their eyebrows within an inch of their life! Everywhere I looked their eyebrows were staring back at me. Daddies were holding their children and embracing their wives yet still giving me that “look.” Boy was I confused. Only after a conversation with a local woman was I informed of the cultural grooming habits of these hot men. Damn! I looked more masculine than they did! [Well, in all honesty, I didn’t but it’s a fantasy I’m holding on to!] I will say this, Puerto Rican steak is much more tender and flavorful than I expected. Mmmmmmmmm. Happy cruising y’all! Love and lashes,

Mary Edith Pitts Please send your comments and feedback to me at maryedith99@gmail.com
