Happy Valentine’s Month!

Diageo

FENUXE 2.9.2012 This Valentine’s Day regardless of your relationship status spend a little time tending to your personal love affair with you. Have you shown you lately how much you love you? Did you find love with yourself in a hopeless place? If your gift is your song, have you given one to you? Time to demonstrate a little love for yourself. I know, we hear it all the time, “You need to love yourself before you can love someone else.” Let’s just forget the second part of that proclamation and focus on the first. During the upcoming holiday of hearts and candy, pressure is on to be partnered. The objective always becomes work on yourself so it will work with someone else. But what about just spending time devoted to you? You are the most important person to you. No one can take better care of you. No one can treat you with the most respect. We shouldn’t be so focused on finding that special someone. The real goal should be discovering amazing things about yourself. So let’s have the proclamation reworded: You need to love yourself so you can...love yourself. After all, you don’t want to become the one that got away. Happy Valentine’s Day!

INTERVIEW

Shannon Jenkins, Associate Writer

Happy Endings

Damon Suede became a gay romance novelist on a dare. He was helping a friend with story holes in her romance novel when she suggested Damon, who earns most of his money scripting for theater and film, write one of his own. She wagered he could finish a novel in two months; he wrote one in six weeks. “She said I was a ‘lazy asshole’ if I didn’t at least give it a shot,” the New Yorker said. Dreamspinner Press published his novel “Hot Head” in June 2011, and Damon’s journey within the romance industry officially began. His interest in gay tales, however, began in his youth. “I grew up reading gay fiction, everything from serious literature to pulp trash,” Damon said. “I remember being a gay teenager and wanting to find a book in which bitter gay characters didn’t commit suicide or suffer through coming out. I could understand the seriousness of the LGBT issues, but at 15 years old, I wanted something a little more hopeful, more emotionally satisfying.” Now, he writes for the adolescent in himself who wants “heat, humor and hope in a romantic story that doesn’t require an airsick bag.” The original seed for his first novel was a true story about a straight

14 : FEBRUARY 9, 2012

firefighter he knew who lost his best friend in the World Trade Center attack. “Though married, though he’d never confessed anything, this fireman realized he had been in love with his friend but only after the man had died on 9/11,” Damon said. “I couldn’t shake the tragedy and irony of that and I thought, ‘I’m gonna give these two mooks the happy ending they deserved.’” The “happy ending” is what sets his romances apart from his other works. “That’s a huge difference and not one that’s easy to earn,” he said. “How do you create emotion without sliding into sentimentality? How do you write intimacy without tipping over into flat-out erotica? This genre is all about connections: between characters,

between readers, and between tropes. Romance has a certain formal rigidity. That’s not to say there’s a formula to romantic fiction, but there’s definitely a form: an intimate relationship that comes to a positive resolution. It sounds pretty simple, but in truth describing intimacy and giving guys a happy ending that feels believable is no joke. So in some ways gay romance challenges me to keep things simple and look for the humanity in ways that I might not when I’m on a mass-market screenwriting gig.” Like many writers, Damon finds those bits of humanity within his own life. “Tiny slivers of my personal experience work their way onto the page: the sound of skin, the smell of a room, or the way light falls,” he said. “Some of the most visceral writing I’ve done comes from those little specifics. I’ve had friendships and problems that turn up in my writing, usually when I want to dig around in them, make sense of them. Strange snippets of conversation and intriguing visuals I’ve stumbled across turn up, too.”

Perhaps some of his personal life will leak into his almost completed novel “Hard Head,” which will be a sequel to “Hot Head” and centers on a self-destructive, sexually compulsive paramedic who appeared in the first book. “Hot Head” gained plenty of attention from readers, peers and critics. His gay romance won a slew of awards including Best Book, Best Debut and Best Contemporary. Thriving on his recent success, Damon has several projects in the works. He’s about two-thirds of the way through a steampunk novel called “Spring Eternal,” and he’s headwriting a free gay soap opera titled “Boxer Falls” being posted at Goodreads. com. Later in the year, he will potentially be tacking a sci-fi sequel to his novella “Grown Men” and then a book about the gay rodeo circuit. “I never would have dreamed of calling myself a romance writer a few years back,” he said. “Now I cannot imagine my writing life without romance fiction being a fat, sweet slice of it!”

Cuddling Up to

ROBEAR

Little is private when it comes to Robear Chinosiʼs private life. At least, that will be the case once all the episodes of NY INK air on TLC. In its second season, the show focuses on the love lives of its cast members who work at the Soho tattoo parlor, the Wooster St. Social Club, where Robear serves as manager. Fenuxe spoke with the hunky Brooklyn native about his love for fashion and tattoos. Of course, we asked him about his feelings on love as well. Below youʼll find a few highlights from our chat with Robear. For the full interview, visit Fenuxe.com. Fenuxe: What do you love about fashion? Robear: I really love textiles in fabrics. I actually do some fashion styling and interior design when I’m not managing the tattoo shop. Those are my two other passions in life. Fenuxe: What do you love about tattoos? Robear: Tattoos represent a timeline of milestones in my life when things were good, bad or different. I marked my body according to how I was feeling at the time Fenuxe: How’s the whole dating thing going for you? Robear: I’m a single gay guy living in New York. I live in the best city in the whole world but I think it’s either feast or famine. Fenuxe: On a first date, what turns you off ? Robear: When men talk too much about their ex-boyfriends or how bitter they are. Also if the guy is overly aggressive. I’m in my thirties, and I’m not out there to hook up or have one-night stands. Fenuxe: What do you find romantic? Robear: Romance to me can be as simple as cooking each other dinner, hanging out, cuddling on the couch watching a movie. I don’t have to be in a fancy restaurant. Fenuxe: What do you look for in a guy? Robear: I just need him to make me laugh. I love a guy who has a sense of humor because I’m usually the funny one. If you can make me laugh that’s a major turn on to me.

18 : FEBRUARY 9, 2012

Fenuxe: What type of guy do you find attractive? Robear: Looks are absolutely secondary and I mean that with all my heart. Looks fade and what you need is good conversation, chemistry and that spark to be together. So that’s what I’m looking for.

Love on the Rocks A Night of Cocktails and Fundraising

Helping raise funds for a worthy charity should make you feel good. Adding cocktails to the mix should make you feel even better. Joining Heartsʼ fifth annual fund-raiser Love on the Rocks will be offering such a scenario. Planned for February 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Bed Down, the Valentine’s cocktail party offers potential corporate sponsors the opportunity to experience what Joining Hearts is all about. The organization has raised funds to help maintain a home for people living with HIV/AIDS in Atlanta for the past 25 years. Over that time, Joining Hearts grew from one main event each year to six. Love on the Rocks now serves as the charity’s second largest fund-raising event with between 300 and 500 guests typically in attendance. “As our only open invitation cocktail party of the year, Love on the Rocks gives us a chance to show the community how we have grown over the last 25 years from a one-event summer dance party to a yearround organization producing six quality events and donating more than $1,339,500,” said President Kerry Loftis, who suggested festive Valentine’s cocktail party attire. Last year, Joining Hearts raised more than $15,000 from ticket sales, donations, tips and silent auction, said Loftis, who hopes to raise 30 percent more this year. “This year’s event will be very similar to last, but we are adding a few twists that our guests will certainly enjoy,” Loftis said. “We have upgraded our VIP experience and have worked hard to add value to our general admission area as well, while keeping our ticket prices the same from last year.” For those guests who fancy VIP treatment, the $50 admission includes express entrance and private bar, specialty cocktails compliments of Ketel One, a VIP Swag bag, Joining Hearts Heart Throbs, specialty coffee drinks by Starbucks and a meet

and greet with local celebrities. If the holidays were tough on your bank account general admission is only $25 and includes complimentary cocktails and bites by Bridge Catering. Loftis said the board of directors and a host committee have been hard at work planning this event since November of last year. “We have devoted lots of thought and effort to make this Love on the Rocks our best yet,” he said. “This being our 25th year of fund raising, we are sharply focused on trying to raise another record breaking donation amount.”

URBAN CULTURE

Dino Thompson-Sarmiento, Fenuxe Contributor

The Power of Two Atlantaʼs LGBT A-list without a doubt includes power couple Seth Woodard Persily and Nathan Woodard-Persily. Together they have accomplished many feats both professionally and community-wise but none greater than becoming parents to their twin daughters. So how do they manage careers, business, home, charities and twin toddlers and still manage to keep love alive? Nathan giggles at my question but without missing a beat he answers, “Help and lots of it.” Both Nathan and Seth have been blessed with supportive families who have played key roles in helping bring up the twins. In addition, they have the support of many “uncles” like David Wilson and Ricky Hobbs and a fabulous nanny. “The key word in the beginning was ‘shifts,’” explains Seth. “Without a firm schedule it would have been nearly impossible to care for two babies and still manage sleep.” Nathan is an active member of GLAAD in Atlanta, along with me, and I can vouch that he rarely misses a meeting, event or retreat. I bump into both the boys at various social gatherings, and I have often wondered how they do it. I have trouble planning a dinner out without thinking ahead for my four-legged children. Both answered it was important to continue to lead their lives as usual. They plan around the girls’ schedules and bed times. They take turns attending functions, but they both agreed that balance at home and socially was key to their success. They rely on their friends and families so they can continue to live full lives and still give the girls a loving stable home. The journey of becoming parents was challenging, and the efforts of both parties making this happen remains admirable. It was not an easy task to find the right egg donor and

Seth and Nathan surrogate and then navigate the complex laws. They did seek assistance from an agency and invested well over six figures and several years to achieve their miracles. I asked them why they chose this route rather than adopting. Both wanted a newborn, which can be difficult; most overseas agencies frown upon gay adoptions, and legally they felt safer having their own blood-related children. It became crystal clear to me that we have a long way to go in facilitating an easy gay adoption in our country. Seth pointed out that many states in the U.S. have laws in place making it illegal for a gay person to adopt a child. Hence, their commitments to various charities to continue the movement of equal rights are at the forefront. Seth is a Harvard law graduate and founder of Penn Multimedia Online Marketing Solutions, and Nathan is an accountant by trade and co-owner of Look Young Spa in Midtown. Look Young Spa recently opened its trendy doors and is a one-stop shop providing hair care, botox, medical weight loss, laser hair removal, laser therapy, photo facials and B-12 shot therapy. Look Young hit the ground running and supports the LGBT community by sponsoring thousands of dollars to GLAAD, AID Atlanta, GA Equality, AIDS Walk, The FENUXE 50, and many others. These two men have found love within each other and continue their journey generously giving to their children and community. The power of two in this case is infinite.

Fancy restaurants intimidate me. I'm still a simple country boy from rural Mississippi at heart, so I've always felt more at ease at those “regular” eateries like a momand-pop diner or IHOP. When the assignment to eat at the newly opened STK arose I was naturally nervous. Arriving at the swanky steakhouse at the corner of Peachtree and Twelfth didn't help. The elegantly modern interior and welldressed clientele seemed to question my presence, but I'd realize within thirty minutes those thoughts were unwarranted. Slipping into a comfy booth that encircled a round table, I had an unobstructed view of the bar lounge and dining area. Everyone else seemed comfortable and no one appeared to be suspiciously eyeing me so I soon relaxed. A bus boy arrived and asked what type of water my table would like, which threw me off temporarily. I perused the menu of steak, chicken, lamb and fish options and their complementary sauces and toppings. A variety of sides included mac and cheese, creamed spinach and brocollini. Nothing seemed too out of the ordinary, but I found several items particularly appealing, which I'll get to in a moment. First, let's talk about prices. A three-course meal at STK easily costs $100 to $150 a person with menu items ranging from $14 for select appetizers to $67 for the 34 ounce cowboy rib steak. So, we began our meal with a beautifully baked bread. A member of our party said it was from the devil, and it certainly proved

28 : FEBRUARY 9, 2012

difficult to resist. Next we indulged in a triad of interesting appetizers—shrimp rice krispies, foie gras french toast and hamachi. The first option, which was simple and delicate, showcased plump, tender shrimp over tiger prawns, lobster bisque and cilantro. Served on a thin slice of cucumber, the hamachi offered bold flavor. My favorite, though, had to be the fluffy French toast accompanied by tart green apple, almond brioche and sherry gastrique. I politely refused the last sliver, but secretly I desperately wanted it. Then we moved on to entrees. I asked our waiter—whose friendly demeanor and attentive, knowledgeable service helped diffuse my nervousness—to pick my meal. He selected the 14-ounce bone-in filet topped with a medallion of truffle butter. I believe I zoned out for about 10 minutes as I meticulously stripped my medium steak to the bone. Our sides of creamed spinach and mac and cheese also demanded much of my attention. Both were creamy and flavorful, and I forced myself to remember portion control. By the end of the night my concerns subsided and I concluded I would happily return to STK for its high-energy dining experience, which features a slew of DJs playing a variety of dance favorites. STK offers the perfect setting for an evening with a small group of close friends or a romantic night out with a handsome fella. Prepare to invest at least two hours for dinner to fully experience STK's welcoming ambiance, courteous wait staff and delicious menu.

Looking For Love? You Have Work To Do

Back in the day when AOL was new and there were only a few websites where one could meet a guy, there were no pictures or videos and you only had the ability to email and then wait a day or two for a response. I talked with a guy online for about two weeks before we decided to meet for a movie. I had given a full description of myself right down to the cast I was wearing courtesy of a car accident. I was immediately recognized, and he approached me. When I laid eyes on him, he was nothing like his description. He had a Billy Ray Cyrus mullet with highlights to boot and a swish that left a trail of fire wherever he walked. When he spoke, his voice was so nasally and loud, Fran Drescher would have been in awe. He was the cliché of just about every gay stereotype that heterosexuals have of our community. To say that I was disappointed was an understatement. I had been bamboozled, hoodwinked and duped all at the same time. I politely decided to see the movie as we had discussed and bought popcorn and drinks. Once inside, I informed him I had to go to the bathroom and never returned. I thought of that incident recently during dinner with friends. They all talked about meeting non-quality guys from websites. I heard Adam for Adam and Grindr and possibly Craigslist—all hook-up sites. I asked the question: “Where else do you go to meet guys?” They said they primarily use the sites. Finding love online isn’t impossible, but we need to be realistic about what the sites really promote. There are guys claiming to be looking for “LTR,” yet their profile pictures showcase their man bits. You are going to have to do a bit more work to find Mr. Right. There are many groups that sponsor gatherings, such as Front Runners Atlanta if you like to run. The Atlanta Gay Social Club offers a way to meet guys and socialize. If you like to partake in Atlanta’s dining scene, the Big Gay Supper Club is a way to have a meal and possibly meet a

special someone. And there’s always work; that’s how I met my partner of 16 years. I hear it all the time—I wish I could find the perfect guy. But I don't see anyone doing much to make that happen. You won’t find the perfect guy because he doesn’t exist. But you can find a guy that is perfect for you if you do the work. It’s time we make a realistic plan for the type of guy we want and get to work on socializing. There is one thing sites cannot help you detect—chemistry. You deserve to find the guy that is perfect for you. I relate the search for a partner much like that of a job; you have to interview, do background checks, check references and qualifications before you decide whether he’s a keeper or not. Keep in mind that you are being interviewed as well. You can’t be a nickel piece looking for a dime. Bring your A game so you find exactly what you are looking for. We’ve heard everything from “love is a many splendored thing” to “love sucks.” The Beatles promised it was all you would need while Pat Benatar proclaimed it a battlefield. Yes, we all share an opinion or two when it comes to this often touchy subject. We asked four Atlantans about love and here’s what they had to say.

Michael

33 Single Ansley Park Have you ever been in love? Yes. I get this diametric mix of feelings of total selflessness and selfishness revolving around the guy, as if I can never give enough of myself but all I care about is being with him more. It's awesome! Do you think it's easy or hard to find love in Atlanta? Hard, no matter what city you’re in. If it wasn't "hard," it wouldn't have the same value once it was "found.” Do you believe in love at first sight? No. Love is far too complex and has too many prerequisites, many of which need time to prove, such as trust, to be instant.

Have you ever been in love? I got the opportunity to experience this feeling with a great guy I dated back in Charlotte. Because of his work, we saw each other during the weekend, and I realized I was head over heels when I started doing stuff that I wasn't used to or didn't know I enjoyed or understood, such as watching football or going to Lowe's. I was having a blast; it was the company that I loved. I looked forward to the weekends to do those little things that before him I didn't care for.

Do you think it's easy or hard to find love in Atlanta? Atlanta is one difficult city to find it but not impossible. It seems like everybody has an eye on the door waiting to see who will walk through. They always seem to be looking for something better. But when you are not looking for it that's when it might happen. Do you believe in love at first sight? No. I believe there might be an attraction to one person. You might even develop a crush based on looks, but there has to be some sort of chemistry to it. 40 : FEBRUARY 9, 2012

34 Single Grant Park Have you ever been in love? Yes, very much so with a wonderful man. I don't remember the specifics of when I came to realize I had fallen in love, but I distinctly remember it happened very soon after meeting him. Everything just clicked; we had a good relationship, which lasted nearly eight years. Do you think it's easy or hard to find love in Atlanta? I think it's offensively difficult, but not impossible. We all meet people who spark our interest. More often than not there is a realization that personalities don't quite complement each other, so you move on. That's normal and to be expected. What I have seen and experienced in Atlanta among gay men, however, is disheartening. In general it seems most lack the self-esteem, courage and character needed for romantic love to blossom. I wish there were fewer scared boys who foolishly toil over “what if's” and sophomoric checklists of “must haves”; and more men who just go for it when another man makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside—despite the risks. Do you believe in love at first sight? I believe it can happen, but it's not something that I think could likely happen to me. I'm far too pragmatic to spontaneously fall in love with a total stranger.

angelique

Late 30s Partnered East Point Have you ever been in love? Yes, I’m sure I have been, but I’m learning and practicing the difference between “romantic love” and “real/sustained love.” I know I’m in romantic love when I feel that undeniable high that makes me feel like I can go for days with nothing else besides that other person’s presence and when just thinking of touching catches my breath and makes me tingle. But, being in real/sustained love is only known through seeing the other person through or being seen through to the other side of real life challenges such as a loss of a job, physical illness or the family drama a holiday dinner can bring. Do you think it's easy or hard to find love in Atlanta? It’s not easy to find real/sustained love, well anywhere really, because we are so trained to be afraid of it and of our true selves. But Atlanta is one of the best and easiest places to find fun, entertainment, and someone to just kick it with because we have so many people here and so many amazing things to do from theater to night clubs; and everybody’s looking for something. Do you believe in love at first sight? No, I don’t, but I do believe in “lust at first sight,” and I believe that lust can lead to love because it is what draws us in; a hook to make us take a second or third look.

ALL IN ONE PLACE

HOMME SUPPLIES THE GOODS Wife and mother of three, Sandra Vincent-Martinez decided, after turning 40, it was time to focus her attention on giving back. As a school teacher she realized quickly giving back on a grand magnitude would prove to be quite difficult. What is a girl to do? Start an online men's underwear company, of course. Through HOMME, www.hommeunderwear.com, and with the help of business partner and West Coast agent Nir Zilberman an outlet for giving was born.

Available at HommeUnderwear.com

“We created Homme because we believe that today’s men want to dress in a way that makes them feel sexy,” says Sandra. Because one of their main objectives is to carry brands that are not currently offered in Atlanta’s conventional retail market and that are sold exclusively through Homme, the shopper can feel sexy with a very-one-of-a-kind twist. But beyond the sexiness lies the desire and ultimate goal to give back. Homme has recently started a “one for one” campaign in which for each pair of underwear sold, one pair will be donated to a homeless organization in need. The opportunity for donations will be even more prevalent after their rumored physical store opens in Midtown. Until then, for more information and to view their full selection, check them out online.

Dear Mary, When it comes to love, I fall fast and hard. Often I’m ready to commit after the first date, and if a guy is interested in me I focus all my attention on him. It never works out. My friends have begged me for years to date around, but I just can’t force myself to think about more than one guy at a time. Clearly my approach isn’t working, but I don’t know how to change the way I think. Please help! Sincerely,

Instantly Head Over Heels

askMARY Dear IHOH,

Two words: serial dating. This is not to be confused with the more popular “serial monogamy,” where one participates in a string of committed relationships, or the less popular but just as irrelevant “cereal monogamy,” where one pledges life-long devotion to a specific breakfast grain (a vow I took many years ago—no one will ever separate me from my Honey Grahams, better or worse). No, I mean you should schedule yourself a series of dates on the same night. Make the schedule depending on how quickly you adhere to a new guy—if an hour-long date leaves you ready to commit, schedule five back-to-back half-hour dates with five different guys. At the end of the night, you’ll be so confused and exhausted there’s no way you’ll be able to fall in love! Obviously, this answer presents some challenges, but I think you can make it work. Employ a cell phone timer and observe your schedule strictly. I wouldn’t volunteer the information that you have four other dates scheduled after the first guy, but honesty is important, so if he asks why you keep checking your watch, let him know you have to get away from him before 6:15 to meet another guy so you don’t fall in love with him. I’m sure when he hears that he’ll think to himself, “Wow. This guy really knows what’s what.” You might inspire a new trend—everyone will have multiple dates in the same night! You’ll fall into bed on Saturday evening wondering if the name of the guy you really felt a connection with was Peter or Zeke and then realizing that you just don’t care. After all, you’re not looking to fall in love. Dating is just so fun, maybe you’ll be able to do it forever!

Awww, love is in the air, and I am bloated with acceptance. VD is upon us (Valentine’s Day y’all), and it occurs to me so many of you poodles need some updated advice on dating in this technomological age. What qualifies me to talk about this? Well I did have a 16-year relationship (with my cat) and I have an iPhone. Enough said. Navigating the dating scene can be difficult; so pull them big girl panties up, and I’m gonna tell it to you straight! Mary Edith Pitts’ Dating Do’s and Don’ts 1. DO set up a Grindr, Scruff or online profile. If you ain’t a pretty girl, use somebody else’s picture cause everybody needs love. If you ain’t got no iPhone, yo ass is screwed! 2. This is a game, so never ever show your true feelings! When you see a guy you like, DO NOT initiate contact. Stand in a corner all meek and mild—this gives the impression you are shy, pristine and virginal. If you are too forward, he’ll know you is a slut!

5. DO have 1, 2 or 7 drinks before your date, ‘cause girl, even I can smell your ass! If you’re drunk, you won’t care. But damn! 6. When you go on your first date to Cowtippers, Joe’s or Roxx1, DO make sure you tell your date you forgot your wallet cause a lady ain’t supposed to pay. Keep drinking! 7. After your date is done, DO text and call him frequently to tell him you loved your date. If he doesn’t return your calls, he’s just playing a game. Show up at his door to let him know you mean business! ________________________ 1 Pitts, M.E. (2002). Atlanta’s Gay Rules of Dating. pp. 22-23.

3. When your man approaches you to speak, remember, you is a lady! DO let the purse fall out yo mouth, and let the sibilant ‘SSSSS’ run free. He knows you is a lady and likes it!

I hope this help you poodles!

4. DO NOT shower before your date. That way if things start getting heated, you’ll remember yo ass is stank and is off limits. Remember poodles, it is an outright sin to go butt bumpin’ on a first date!

Dia Frampton Malcolm Montgomery,

As we sat with Dia Frampton in her tour bus, crew members hustled outside to set up for the concert. The first-season “Voice” runner-up would be opening for country star Blake Shelton in a few hours, yet she sat next to us completely relaxed. Despite her recent success with the musical reality show and the Well Lit & Amplified Tour, the petite 24-year-old remains humble and sweet, and she certainly didn’t put on false airs for us. Dia, who usually performs shoeless and who doesn’t like wearing make-up, spoke with honesty and sincerity about her career and life. Here’s what she had to say. FENUXE: Do people ever think you are related to Peter Frampton? DIA: Sometimes, and sometimes I just let them believe it, and say, “Yeah, he's my uncle.” I did watch him play once, and it was awesome. That's about as far as it gets. FENUXE: How did you get involved with music? What inspired you? DIA: My inspiring first moment was listening to “Cowboy’s Sweetheart” by LeAnn Rimes. I had always listened to music, and my Dad used to be a DJ in Korea. So there was always lots of music going on in the house, but it was all like Queen, Chicago and the Beach Boys. I enjoyed that stuff but it never really connected with me as much, but when

64 : FEBRUARY 9, 2012

my dad brought the LeAnn Rimes CD home it really connected with me because she was a little girl—almost my age: I was nine. FENUXE: What was the “big break”? DIA: I've had a lot of “big breaks” in my life. And that’s kind of the funny thing about the music industry is that you feel like this is my big break and then it's not. But even now, with all the stuff that's going on, I still don't feel like it's my big break. I feel like music is so fickle, and I could honestly just float away in the wind because Season 2 of the Voice is coming up and people could forget my name in literally a month. So even still I feel kind of scared and hesitant and wouldn't call myself successful right now because I think success in the music industry is longevity.

FENUXE: Your manager urged you to try out, but what was happening with your band, Meg and Dia at the time? DIA: I chose to try out for the Voice because there wasn't anything happening with Meg and Dia. We put our last album out and it sold some copies, but it had kind of run its course. People have this weird misconception about bands. They thought that if you were on MTV for a second that you live in million dollar mansions, where in reality I was in New York working at a cupcake shop and Meg was working at a Kay Jewelers. Nick was at an auto body shop; we still had normal jobs and still are working to do things. And that's why on the Voice some people said you don't deserve to do this, you are already famous or this or that and that was frustrating in my eyes because I thought, “Who is it more fair to be able to try out: someone who is going to college who just decided to do it on a whim or someone who has been bending over backwards for seven years to do this?” FENUXE: When I first saw you on the Voice, my first thoughts were where is Meg, your sister who you had been in a band with for so long. DIA: She is on tour with me. It was kind of weird for her at first with me being the face of the band now. It's been a weird transition, but with the Voice I never really thought I would go very far, and I thought if anything came of it, it would be people Googling me and finding Meg and Dia. It was never my intention to be this solo artist, but I feel like I can relate it to this really weird metaphor: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” I feel like I had this basket waiting for me with Meg and Dia. All of a sudden there was a garbage can next to me filled up with lemons, and I could have ignored it and said, “I really wanted my lemons to fall in this basket.” But I couldn't turn it down. I thought 11 million people watch me on the show as Dia Frampton, and it would be stupid to peruse Meg and Dia still. It's basically about rolling with the punches, and I brought the Meg and Dia band along with me and we have been having a good time. FENUXE: So your album "Red" just came out a couple of months ago, why is it called “Red”? DIA: When I was a little kid my mother told me on the first day of school that if I wore red everyone would like me and I wouldn't be nervous or scared. It was kind of like Dumbo's magic feather. It just kind of worked out that way.

FENUXE: Who are your favorite artists right now? DIA: Tom Petty I love. I really enjoy Modest Mouse. Blake Shelton is a given. I've always liked him, but being on tour with him, I sing all the lyrics to all of his songs. I'm also a big Miranda Lambert fan, Blake's wife. FENUXE: If someone was doing a movie about your life, who would you want to play you? DIA: I think I would want to play myself! I have been taking acting classes. I really like Helena Bonham Carter, but I can't see her as me. Oh I know, Marion Cotillard from “Inception” and “Midnight in Paris.” FENUXE: If you won the lottery tomorrow what would you do? DIA: I think I would put it in a savings account. I think I would take like 20 of my friends on a crazy vacation to Paris and eat crazy food and have great hotel rooms and flights and go nuts.
