AT A RECENT cocktail affair I had an opportunity to speak with an old-school graphic designer / industry guru. She told me of an ancient time when personal computers didn’t exist and each page of a magazine was manually placed together using adhesives, sprinkling in pieces of graphics, texts and images. What a nightmare. What a tedious, daily, unrelenting nightmare! Funny enough the ancient time she spoke of wasn’t that long ago. Take a step back from your groupon hunting for just a second. Can you believe how far technology has advanced in 15 years? Even more exciting, and thrilling, is where we will go in the next 15 years.

Wearable Widgets DO YOU REMEMBER the time when cells phones were bigger than bricks and video cameras needed things called “tapes”? Luckily, those days are long gone and a lot of the hottest technology can now be worn as an accessory. We did the research and found the hottest wearable widgets!

Fun: Looxcie 2 The Looxcie 2 is perfect for all you creepers. This nifty little item is a camera that slips around your ear and records everything you look at while keeping your hands free for more important things like holding a cocktail at the pool. Think of all the hotness you’ll capture on camera. Word of advice; use sparingly it is addictive. Fashion: Lady Gaga GL30 Sunglasses A few months back, Polaroid named Lady Gaga as their Creative Director. One of her first inventions is a pair of sunglasses that doubles as a camera. The wearer can snap a pic which will instantly display on the lens, or mini screens, of the glasses. The product is scheduled to be released later this year. Be sure to grab yours so you can live even more like Mother Monster! Function: nPowerPeg One of the worst things that can happen to a gay boy is to run out of juice in the middle of a call with the new fling. Thankfully to products like the nPowerPeg by Tremont Electrics you will never need to drop a call again. This cool gadget sits in your manny-pack and creates energy while you walk. It can recharge nearly anything with a plug, except maybe your love life. Friends: LiveView In a world of constant tweets and updates it seems like all you do is pull our phones in and out of your pocket. I am sure y’all have better things to do with our hands. The Bluetooth enabled Sony LiveView Android phone remote will display new tweets and status updates and alert you when they arrive. It even lets you control your phone’s music player and other apps! The best part is it is small enough to clip on any area of your body. Fitness: FitBit According to the gay handbook we must constantly count calories and stay in shape, but we all know that gets tiresome. Now we have a way to be lazy when working out thanks to the FitBit! The wearable widget reads your daily movements (including sleep patterns) in 3D with the same technology found in the Wii and converts it into useable data which includes: calories burned, hardness of activities throughout the day and even how many times your partner’s snoring woke you up.

Joining Hearts 24

An Affair to Remember EVERY GAY BOY in Atlanta knows the hottest party this and every summer

is the Joining Hearts party held at the Piedmont Park pool on July 23. If you have never attended you have no idea what you are missing. Imagine hundreds of hot guys enjoying a summer cocktail in the sun, dancing to the music of DJs Mike Pope and Seth Cooper in nothing more than a bathing suit all for a good cause. Is there any better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?

This is the must attend event of the summer! This year’s event is already sold out, but you don’t worry your soon-to-be-perfectly-toned and trimmed body one little bit because you can still get in on the action by becoming a Joining Hearts 24 patron. Simply go to www. joinghearts.com and fill-out the online form for your ticket to paradise.

of twelve friends who pitched in 100 bucks each so they could throw a party to help people with HIV/AIDS. They threw Joining Hearts 1 at the Gold Key Club as a black tie event and raked in more than $10,000. More importantly though, especially for 1987, they were able to bring awareness to a problem that was being ignored in Atlanta.

For those of you out of the loop; Joining Hearts is a non-profit that raises money and filters it to AID Atlanta and Jerusalem House. They pride themselves on being able to give 100% of the money raised at the pool party and other events directly to their benefiting organizations.

As the organization got larger so did the party. Loftis says, “We have found the need to explore a variety of venues to host our main event over the past 24 years, including an airplane hangar at PDK, the Atlanta Zoo, Atlanta Civic Center and of course the heart of midtown...Piedmont Park.” Last year’s party raised more than $125,000 and overall Joining Hearts has raised and distributed over $1,000,000!

Current JH President, Kerry Loftis, explains, “Funds raised by Joining Hearts make up a significant portion of the budgets of our beneficiaries and are specifically designated to provide clients with housing assistance needs such as assistance with rent, a house payment, a utility bill or temporary shelter.” Joining Hearts was started in 1987 by a group

We look forward to seeing y’all prancing around the pool. And don’t worry we won’t tell anyone we saw you getting a spray tan right before the party!

APPS TO INDULGE By Eric Chavez

It’s a small wonder what technology can do for you these days. Not only can you get the up-to-date news on Lady Gaga’s outrageous outfit, you can also manage your money, get instant cocktail recipes, and decorate your entire home with a touch of your finger. It’s like the only thing these apps don’t do for you (yet) is instill common sense. There are ton of famous apps like Facebook, Pandora and CNN, but there are also a few lesser-known apps that can help make a gay man’s nightlife a little bit easier and maybe even more fun. Here are the top five apps every gay guy needs on his smart phone for finding food, fun or both for a fabulous night on the town: Gay Cities: No matter where you are, start the quest for the perfect night out with Gay Cities. It will hook you up with the chicest, hippest, gay-oriented clubs, restaurants and more. You can read user reviews of each place to ensure the restaurant you’re hitting on your date is a romantic hot spot and not an underground S&M club, unless that’s your dig. Around Me: Whether you’re looking for the nearest coffee shop to continue your date or the closest novelty store because the date was a bust. Around Me will show you the way to go. The app is linked with GPS which will help you safely arrive wherever your heart desires.

Google Goggles: Looking to make small talk? Impress your date with your vast knowledge of everything, even if you have no clue what it is. Just snap a photo of the item and the app will give you a complete rundown on the object and link you to even more info. Google Goggles will help you impress your friends with everything from the history of the Marquis De Sade to Sade’s latest album notes. Shazam: Imagine standing in the middle of a crowded dance floor and knowing the name of each song that played. Stop imagining sister, because the time has come. Gone are the days of hearing an amazing song and stumbling around the club asking every bartender for the details. Shazam will listen to the song, give you the artist info, track name, and even a link to to purchase. Grindr: This app has revolutionized the way gays come together. Whether you’re looking for friends (yeah right) or a quick hook-up (more likely), Grindr will show you all the members in your vicinity. You can check out their profile, communicate and even send seductive images. If it is a “match” you can use your navigation to find them. Pretty much the only thing it doesn’t do is take off their clothes. Sounds like a great climax to a perfectly app-elicious night out, if that’s your dig. 22 FENUXE.COM

The Power in Everyone's Hands

HE’S TALKING ABOUT it, he’s touched it, she’s seen it, he’s holding it now, and you want it. With so many choices, sizes, and colors, how can you pick the best mobile device for you or your company? What?! What did you think we were referring to? The power of the Internet is being delivered to the palm of your hand with apps for that, this and everything in between. Your phone can now watch connect, click, and even scan. Too much? Not there yet? You may not be ready for what the 21st Century has to offer in the world of technology, but you can be thanks to companies like Atlanta’s gay-owned Kardon Technology. The techies over at Kardon can get you up to speed before you know it. They specialize in helping small businesses leverage the technology accessible to them so they can get connected and mobile. It isn’t always quick, and is rarely easy, but it is important to get it done. Kardon Technology will help make a small fish look and feel like a big fish. Live and Click Local: Many of your local gay owned and gay friendly businesses and organizations survive in part because of the loyalty of the their patrons. It is important to routinely visit these websites to help build these companies and non-profits so they continue to be successful members of your community. Sassy Security: Would you ever imagine leaving your wallet sitting in the middle of a crowded coffee shop while you went to use the restroom? Of course not! So, why do you think it is okay to walk around with your apps all flapping in the wireless breeze? Make sure you use only secure websites and develop a hard to crack password system. That means no birth dates or pets names. Smart Phones: You have a laptop to keep your status updates current, you have a Wii to play your games and an out-dated GPS to get you around town. You may be connected, but you are also behind the times. Time to step-up and get a smart phone and do all those things with one toy. Android and Apple have apps for pretty much everything under the sun. Brilliant Tablets: Laptops serve their purpose, but they are either too bulky to use in confined places or too small to be truly functional. This is why all the with it gays and lesbians are snatching up the latest tables like the iPad2, HP Touchpad and the Motorola Zoom. These modern marvels can help keep you entertained and also serve functional purposes for the business people of the community. Witty Websites: Always be one app ahead of our friends by visiting websites like Mashable, Pocketlint, App of the Day, App Appeal and Wired. These websites will help keep you up-to-date on important apps that can help you track all the trends in fashion and entertainment. After all you can’t be a gay trendsetter if you are a day late and a dollar short.

A MEAL WITHOUT A FACE By Dino Thompson-Sarmiento

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I “LOVE” a good piece of meat so when the invitation to Café Sunflower came along I was a bit apprehensive. The restaurant features vegetarian cuisine with flavors from Asia, the Mediterranean, American South West and Caribbean. I did some research on what exactly it means to be vegetarian. The essential rule is to eat plant based foods sometimes including dairy and eggs but never meat, seafood or poultry. Within the vegetarian culture there are also vegans who do not eat any animal products such as dairy, eggs and honey (will not eat anything that has a face) the ovo-vegetarians include eggs, the lacto-vegetarian includes dairy and the ovo-lacto-vegetarian include both eggs and dairy. The reasons for this style of eating are wide and complex. Some folks follow religious sanctions, others do it for political, economic, ethical, health, environmental, cultural or a combination of these. With the clearer understanding of what I was getting in to I headed to Café Sunflower with an open mind and nostalgia for my meat. I was greeted by an attentive staff who was happy to walk me through the menu step by step. I started with the Pita Pizza, Fried Green Tomatoes and Vegan Artichoke and Spinach dip. It was DELICIOUS; I’m still craving the Pita Pizza which was filled with exquisite flavors and unique textures. I followed up with their version of meatloaf called the “Garden Loaf ” a supremely hearty soy veggie loaf and herb mashed potatoes with miso mushroom gravy accompanied with grilled asparagus and spring rolls. It is a beautiful plate nicknamed the “Volcano” because of its resemblance to Mount Vesuvius as it is plated vertically and wonderfully colorful. As a grand finale I had the Carrot Cake and 28 FENUXE.COM

Chocolate Raspberry Mousse Cake. The Carrot Cake was the best I’ve tasted in my life. I wondered how many sit ups I would have to add to my gym session that week but I was assured that because of the lack of processed ingredients I would be fine. Kudos to Jim Shumake at Café Sunflower for expanding my horizons and inviting my taste the wonders of the meatless cuisine. I say 2 thumbs up and 3 Fenuxe birds. Tech Guide

When us gays think of technology we usually think of things like web-based innovations or clean energy, however it is so much more personal; it is the clothes we wear, the floors we walk on and even the food we eat. Do you think low-carb energy bars and vacuums that don’t lose suction fell out of the sky like just like Dorothy and Toto? Technology is so prevalent in our daily lives; it can be downright confusing to figure out what advancements are worth the time and effort. Don’t you worry; the Fenuxe team has created a technology day planner to guide you through your tech-filled daily lives. Sit back and relax as Fenuxe takes you on a journey through the best technology from your coffee first thing to your night cap at the end.

Wakey Wakey

Ivee Flex: This sexy little unit is voice activated so you don't even have to move your tired little head to check the time, temp and/or turn on the digital radio. Nespresso Citiz & Milk: No need to worry about counting scoops this early in the day. All you have to do is slip a pod in place and bam; espresso faster than you can say “what's his name again?” ($350) Urban Detox by Function Drinks: Espresso not enough? Help ease the pain of hangovers with this tasty little number. ($2)

Tempur-Pedic ComfortSlipper: These may not look as good as the latest Prada slip-on, but they sure feel better. This is the time of day when comfort is more important than fashion. ($115) 40 FENUXE.COM

CTA Shower iPod Speaker: Before you hit the shower, grab your iPod and slide it into a shower (and pool) safe gadget so you can lather, dance and repeat. ($20)

Spritz, Sparkle & Shave

Alterna Bamboo Shampoo and Conditioner: This product uses rare oils to help make your hair finger-running soft. Alterna currently offers the bamboo line for both boys and girls, but our sources tell us they are releasing a men's only bamboo product line this fall. ($20)

Braun cruZer Body: No more sweeping, no more weeping. This nifty little trimmer can scape all 2,000 of your body parts while you are still in the shower! ($60) Art of Shaving Classic Razor: If you have to shave you might as well do it with the best razor around. This old-school razor sports a perfectly weighted handle and fits the Gillette Fusion blades for a smooth shave every time. Your face is safe with this razor. ($150)

Jack Black Beard Lubes: These shaving lubes are revelationary to us boys who have to shave every day. They help condition, shave and protect your face all in one shot. Once you go with Jack you will never go back. ($19)

The Lunch Pot has two containers; one can hold your BF’s famous chili and the other can hold the salad you made for yourself. After lunch the two pots reduce down to one for an easier ride home. It also comes with a cute little spork that attaches to the side. ($22)

Dear Mary, I have been single for a few months after getting out of a v-e-r-y long term relationship, but I am having a hard time meeting men. One guy asked me to tweet him, but when I tried he slapped me and walked away. Can you please give me some pointers for dating in the modern world of full of technology? Signed,

XP needing X-Perience

Dear soon to be XXX-P, Actually, this sounds like a really great conversation starter. First, buy yourself a laptop. For reference, I like to walk into Good Purchase or MP3 Shed and ask them to point me to a computer that will let me simultaneously G-Chat, play Angry Birds and look up Kim Kardashian’s measurements. Apparently almost any machine can do that these days (like, any machine, not just computers; phones, dishwashers, lamps, etc). Now, take your lovely new PC purchase to anyplace featuring a “We have WiFi!” sticker on the door. Er, well, take it to a coffee shop. I do not understand the appeal of WiFi in a restaurant…I mean really...you’re there to eat. If your social life is such that you need an Internet connection to have a dining companion, you are beyond my help. I should have mentioned earlier to look super hot, but I figured you already are. So, computer in hand. Perch your booty in a high-traffic area, maybe right by the organic wooden stirrers and raw sugars, and shake your head in annoyance. Sigh, if need be. Continue to look frustrated until you land a tech-savvy cutie. Ta da! One thing though: your definition of tweeting is clearly far more interesting than what the word actually means, so I suggest you stick with it forever. Never Change,

THE LGBT COMMUNITY is just as diverse as the rest of

the America, we come in different shapes, sizes and we are from different backgrounds, ethnicities and religions. However there is one type in the gay world that seems to be harder to find than a tan line on a nude beach... THE RARE GAY NERD! But we all know you are out there. Answer the following questions to see where you fall into this rare category of gay geekdom.

1. You are checking out headphones at Radio Shack and the clerk asks “Are you an early adopter?” You reply...

A. No, honey, I don’t have any kids. B. Are you kidding me? I still listen to all my hits on my C.D. Player. C. Of course! you can find me at Apple before Steve Jobs makes his announcements.

2. You are asked to explain the big bang theory to a group of kids. Your first reaction would be...

A. Like a volcano erupting! No, but really I’m not talking about sex in front of children. B. It’s a show about a bunch of nerds who wear bad clothes and tell bad jokes. C. There is no way a bunch of children can understand the complexities of this theory. Let’s wait to see if they make it to college first.

3. You overhear two guys at a bar discussing who would win in a fight; Havoc or Cyclops? Your first reaction is to...

A. Feel sad that they are not talking about the new Tom Ford sunglasses. B. Really? They discuss this in a gay bar? C. Walk over and explain they should not be pitting two of the good guys against each other because they need to stay united. Then ask for both their numbers.

4. Your friend tells you to check in with foursquare when you get to the club so he knows to come look for you. When you get to the door you...

A. Ask the bouncer where you can find the foursquare game and if it is too late to get in on the action. B. Tell him that you don’t use foursquare because it is just another way for the government to track all your activities. C. Check in on foursquare, Yelp, Facebook, GoWalla update your profile pic and download the latest app for the club all while waiting for your friend to find you.

A. Tell him that you will play with his Xbox, but you prefer to do it the old fashion way not standing up. B. Let him know you find it refreshing to meet someone who still admits to playing video games, but maybe dinner first? C. Tell him that Kinect is so old school, but he is more than welcome to come to your house and play Halo Reach 2.0 on your life-sized 3D Computer.

Quiz Key Give Yourself The Corresponding Points For Each Answer: 1 point for every “A” 3 points for every “B” 5 points for every “C”

Now find out if you are the rare gay geek

5. You meet a really cute guy at the Joining Hearts Pools Party who invites you over to play with his Xbox Kinect? Do you...

1-7 Points: You are not a gay geek and you my be just a tad bit out of touch. You might want to get out of the bedroom house a little more often. 7-16 Points: You are aware of technology and the world around you, but you would rather discuss New York Fashion Week than Comic Con, Dragon Con or your emoticons. 17-25 Points: Congratulations you are a needle in a haystack, the tan line on a nude beach, you are the rare GAY GEEK! Bathe in your knowledge of electronics. Lather in your silicon fortress of solitude.

ARE YOU THE RARE GAY GEEK?

RuPaul

Queen of the Glamazon

USUALLY WHEN ONE thinks of drag queens, the word “diva” comes

to mind, but that ain’t always a good thing, baby! RuPaul has made a name for himself as the crème de la crème of drag queens. He has conquered the drag world and with a history of hit songs that include collaborations with legends such as Diana Ross, one might think he would be the biggest diva of them all. Ru, however, keeps it real with a humbleness and sweetness that is lacking in most divas, drag or not.

With two hit shows under his Gucci belt, Ru has gone back to his roots with Glamazon; which could very well be the best album in RuPaul’s impressive musical repertoire. RuPaul has come along way from his first hit single “Supermodel”. Even after all these years, RuPaul is still one red hot foxy lady and proves it takes one hell of a man to fill a woman’s shoes. Fenuxe: We heard your new album and we think it’s amazing! We just wanted to ask what inspires you as an artist? RuPaul: Well, the show Drag U and Drag Race inspired the new album. All the “glamazons” I’m around on a daily basis. All of the kids on the show embody the “glamazon” spirit. Even on Drag U [Season 2 is currently airing on Logo]. We are teaching up-and-coming’s, or “glamazons” who have lost their flame to re-ignite it. Fenuxe: We’ve actually been a fan of yours since The RuPaul Show, which premiered in 1996. You had amazing divas on there. We really loved your interviews. RuPaul: I loved it too! I have a great time. I’m naturally inquisitive. Fenuxe: We know you love La Toya Jackson, have you ever performed a song of hers? RuPaul: Actually, no. In the late 80’s, in NYC, I used to lip sync to Cher, Jody Watley, and a few others. Never did a La Toya song. I think I’m actually too big for her voice. It would never be believable! Fenuxe: LaToya was great on your show. We loved it! 64 FENUXE.COM

RuPaul: Twice! Fenuxe: Yeah, hopefully you guys can do something together. RuPaul: She’s always on the top of my list. Fenuxe: You’ve had so many albums and songs through the years, but we’re curious, which song do you feel represents “RuPaul” the most? RuPaul: I think it would be “Responsitrannity,” from the Glamazon album. I’ve been listening to this album non-stop for the last

two months, and that isn’t always the case [to listen to my own records]. But the song that really stands out is “Responsitrannity.” It’s the dialog that’s always going on in my head. It says “remember who you really are and what you’re doing here, and that it’s important to be mindful of keeping a balance between your ego and your spirit.” Fenuxe: We love the positive message you’ve always conveyed in your books and music. Speaking of your latest book, Workin’ It, we adored your humble reference to Judge Judy! Are there any other new things you’ve learned from her? RuPaul: Well, I love that she’s able to stay on topic without getting distracted by emotions...That’s a real art! And she keeps it classy! Fenuxe: That’s a good point! One more question, do you think you’ll do a concert tour for your new album? RuPaul: Because of both shows, I only have a month between them, so I haven’t been able to tour. I’ll probably tour in the fall, when we finish up Drag Race 4. But I haven’t done it [tour] in a year in a half. Fenuxe: Well, we hope you come to Atlanta! RuPaul: I usually do. What club would I play down there? Fenuxe: Jungle is definitely be the main one. It has a stage, not just a floor! {Laughs} RuPaul: You know that whole “floor” phenomenon is a new thing in the past ten years, and we just got to change that shit! How can you put a queen on the floor with no lights?

HEy Girl HEy What’s up y’all? It’s that time of year again, my birthday! That means it’s time to mark your calendars Saturday, August 20, 2011 for my annual birthday fundraiser from 7:00pm to 9:30pm. Last year, we raised over $37,000 for Jerusalem House and the Grady Infectious Disease Program! I’m hoping to push it even further this year. I’m so excited; I can’t wait to tell everyone all of the details so keep reading! If you’re looking for fun, games, and prizes during the week, come check out “Mary Edith Pitts’ Music Mash-Up,” my new game show 8:00pm every Wednesday at Joe’s on Juniper. It will be challenging and fun, so bring your friends and register your team to play and win! The evening’s first, second, and third place winners will receive $50, 25, 10 gift cards respectively. Be sure you and your team arrive early to reserve a table. I also want to talk about a journey I’m ready to take. For some time now, I’ve been neglecting my health. My weight is close to the heaviest it’s ever been, and every time I lose a lot and get on the right track - I find myself slowly gaining it all back. I can’t help but wonder, “Are there underlying issues?”

I know I have some medical problems that contribute, for which I take medication, but I know I am an over eater as well. It may not be surprising to some, but it’s important for me to state the truth and to take responsibility for my actions. I’ve had a love affair with food all of my life, but as I get older, my body can’t keep up with the late night calories and my bad habits. I share all of this for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I must be held accountable. Secondly, I hope that by sharing my struggles with others that I might help anyone else who is going through this as well. Maybe my life experiences will make a difference for another person. I recognize I need help and am not afraid to ask for it. I also need to be clear about my goal. I do not want to be a certain size or specific weight. My goal is to be healthy. I’m not looking to be anything other than the best I can be, I just want to be a better me. At this moment, I know the image staring me back in the mirror doesn’t represent my best living, and that is what I am going to change. I’m starting a blog so I can track my progress, and so that anyone else can follow it as well. It will be an honest, and probably an emotional account with plenty of ups and downs. “Hey world, this is me facing my fear head on!”

Love and lashes,

Mary Edith Pitts 66 FENUXE.COM
