married. We aren’t allowed to go through the standard, sacred religious ceremony, stating our vows in the presence of our family and loved ones. But we do have the right to have imagination. With imagination comes innovation, equaling some pretty unique expressions of love. Some couples celebrate their love through a style that closely resembles a traditional wedding. Others prefer traveling to far off destinations and building memories together that will last a lifetime. Some prefer to not celebrate their love at all. Simply being together, day after day, is enough. Our celebratory ceremonies are as diverse as our community, which is just wonderful. Every different style of our love is a direct reflection of the variety of people who make up the gay community. In this issue of Fenuxe we offer ideas and tips to assist in your big day, whether you want a formal wedding with all the frills or a completely unconventional consecration.

Worst Lines From A Best Man Speech

We’ve all seen it. It’s the best man’s turn to give his speech and he’s had a bit too much to drink. Or being inappropriate is just part of his charm. Bottom line is, something embarrassing is about to be said, and it ain’t pretty. Here are seven ceremony sayings to avoid at all costs.

“One fine day, I hope to see you two beco me the first gay coup le in Geor gia to legal ly divor ce.” “Som e peop le say bring ing a loade d gun to a weddi ng is tacky , but that’ s just how I roll .” “I coul dn’t be more prou d of my gay son right now. ..wel l, I’d prob ably be more prou d if his husb and was a woma n. But hey, cong rats boys !” “...an d that was a list of all the men John has slept with. ” “Tren t and Bobb y tell peop le their first date was at Zoca lo, which conf used me becau se I had no idea Zoca lo open ed a loca tion insid e Flex. ” “So after I get done clean ing the vomit off him, I’m all like ‘Hey! It’s four hour s till your weddi ng and we haven ’t even paid the dwar f yet!’ But he clean s up well , does n’t he folks ? Give him a hand !” “I have to admit the famil y didn’t take it well when we foun d out Gabe was marr ying anot her dude. But we were wron g. Now come over here and give your big brot her a hug, ya littl e homo !”

Tuxedo Tips

SO THERE’S THE whole tuxedo dilemma weighing down on you. And by the way, the only time you’ve ever even approached the idea of wearing a tux was for last month’s HRC Dinner. But now the big day’s arriving and you’ve got to get it together. So how do you pull off your outfit with the style and trend you are accustomed to sporting? We spoke to Kate Donachy of the fabulous Rik Dukar formal-wear boutique, located in Virginia-Highland. She gave Fenuxe five great tips on what to wear, and how to wear it. 1.WEAR FOR THE OCCASION, NOT THE COLLABORATION: Instead of dressing

the groom based off of a bride’s attire, the gentlemen have the opportunity to determine formality of dress based off the event location, time of day, or if it’s a seated/ buffet dinner.

2. BASICS ALWAYS WIN: For black tie

formal, you can never go wrong with the basics – nicely tailored black tuxedo, white shirt and a black bow-tie. This is the classic formal dress for gentleman, appropriate for any evening – elegant, simple and sexy. Also, make sure your suit is perfectly tailored, otherwise nothing will look good.

3. STEP OUTSIDE THE WORSTED WOOL BOX: For other formal options, play

around with separates and dinner jackets. Halston is one of the most innovative brands in menswear right now. They were big in the 70’s and have recently relaunched some really cool dinner jacket ideas – sequined lapels, midnight blue fabric, highly roped shoulders. Tom Ford also designs some really innovative jackets using velvet and paisleys.

4. YOUR JACKET WILL TAKE YOU FAR: For after-the-event try styling a dinner

jacket casually. For date night pair the dinner jacket with dark jeans. For a cocktail formal throw a pocket square on the jacket and wear with an open collar shirt, you’ll have a great look.

5. MAKE IT POP!: For less formal ceremonies, play with color or metallics a bit. Stick with a similar color palette for your jacket and pants but throw in an unexpected pop – say a standard midnight blue paired with a large-print paisley pink dress shirt and a cream pocket square. Or accent your tailored charcoal suit with lilac accessories and rose-gold. 16 FENUXE.COM

Possums East Point Party Is Back! STONEWALL WEEK KICKS off, appropriately enough, with a “riot” of

a great time as a huge troupe of queens hit the stage for the 14th Annual East Point Possums Show. The benefit is free but every dollar thrown on stage from the audience goes directly to Atlanta Pride and M.I.S.T.E.R., Positive Impact’s HIV education and prevention program.

Last year’s show attracted a crowd of nearly 1,000 and raised $18,000. The Possums are stepping it up even more this year to continue the momentum. They’ve lined up over 30 performers on the bill for a night heavy on performance and light on banter. “Some drag queens just love to hear themselves talk, but we don’t do that,” says East Point Possums Matriarch and co-founder Rick Westbrook, aka Shenitta Lott. “We give you full entertainment the whole time.” The first few shows were nothing like its current incarnation though. “It started off in a backyard and people started throwing money at the stage, and that wasn’t the intent of the show to start with,” Westbrook says. “It was just a celebration of peoples’ creativity. But it grew to the point that we could no longer donate a large amount of money anonymously.” So the show moved to downtown East Point, where the Possums had to be creative to get the permit from the city. The first year in East Point they told the city it was a Shakespearean variety show. “Now I just walk in and say ‘Hey it’s me, I’m ready to have my drag show!’ And they all just laugh and sign off on it,” says Westbrook.

18 FENUXE.COM

No one’s happier they sign off on it than Atlanta Pride and M.I.S.T.E.R. “With the community center up and running, we’ve got basic expenses that we need to cover,” says M.I.S.T.E.R.’s Community Outreach Prevention Specialist Chandler Bearden. “We’re also looking at bringing in additional facilitators and classes to provide for the community.” This is in addition to the free HIV tests and STD screenings they offer, so the show will help keep those services free for the community. The East Point setting provides a unique backdrop for a drag show this big. Gay couples mingle with straight couples with kids and with little blue-haired ladies. It adds up to an unforgettable night of entertainment and community, says Westbrook. “It’s just a magical night. There’s so much fun that goes on and so much good that’s done.”

A New Affair

By Lucas Mills

IT SEEMS THE first assumption the community makes about “married” couples is they disappear, settle down, quit going out, and let themselves go. For this reason, we are hesitant to partner-up. There’s a little voice in the back of all our minds saying, “Wait a minute, you may want to hold off for now on all this settling down, after all, you aren’t getting any younger, so you better live up what you can while you can.” Okay. Maybe it isn’t so specific but you gotta admit, there’s a little hesitancy in everyone’s mind. Take for example your average night out at the clubs – where are all the couples? No, the real couples, the one’s that have been together longer than a week. Well, if they aren’t out with you, then they must be home, watching reruns of GLEE. Not necessarily, we asked around and found quite the contrary. Furthermore, not only is it healthy to expand your nightlife activities, it also helps the longevity of your partnership. We all know that getting together is easy, staying together is the real challenge.

One such couple (middle aged, partnered, one son, three dogs) said “What do we really like to do? Cook, have friends over for board game nights once a week, drink good beer and occasionally have a cigar.” Predictable... right? Well, what about going out? “Dinner someplace yummy and unusual, Vietnamese, Korean or ‘Holeman & Finch’ after 10 P.M., one of our fav late night spots.” Hmm, diversifying your cuisine, trying the new and unusual sounds pretty spontaneous. The more we learn about settling down the more we see it isn’t settling at all, in fact it seems to be the opposite, allowing you a partner-in-crime to try out new cuisine and discover new entertainment outlets.

We dug around and found some great options to make this summer the season to step out and experience new ventures:

AT GAY GROUND ZERO

SAYING TWELVE IS A GOOD PLACE TO GO FOR FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS IS LIKE SAYING THE POOL IS A GOOD PLACE TO GO TO GET WET. EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. THE BOUTIQUE OWNED BY COMMUNITY MEMBER JOHN MCDONALD HAS PILED UP “BEST FLORIST” AND “TOP FLORIST” AWARDS OVER THE YEARS. BUT IT’S ALSO ONE OF THE BEST GIFT SHOPS IN THE CITY, AND THE PERFECT PLACE TO FIND A WEDDING GIFT THIS SUMMER. TWELVE’s beginnings go back to 1996 in a 12 X 12 foot room in a now vacant house next to Einstein’s. There was a small table of flowers, a card line, some incense and whatever treasures McDonald found in the city’s thrift stores. Six months later he made the move around the corner to a space currently occupied by The Pet Set. This is when the flower business exploded, but they remained a destination for fine gifts. “We just started evolving,” McDonald says. The years and the solid reputation piled up and it was time to expand again, and in 2004, they made the move to their current location at 10th and Piedmont. McDonald’s vision has always been to support artists, and the vision becomes clear once you escape the hustle and bustle of the popular intersection and enter the comforting confines of TWELVE. Unique home décor items in all manner of colors and materials abound throughout the store, with beautiful glassware standing out the most.

If the wedding gift search continues, take a look at the photo albums – always a safe bet for the couple starting their lives together. There is also a variety of keepsake boxes perfect to house the many wedding cards the couple is bound to receive. If you’re a groom looking for a unique gift for your five gay groomsmen, TWELVE’s handmade cufflinks are the pick. Bridal jewelry for that lovely lesbian lady is also an in-demand product courtesy of skilled artists handpicked by McDonald. But aside from the exquisite and affordable inventory, what’s up with the name TWELVE? It comes from a recurring number in McDonald’s life – family birthdays on the 12th of the month, his birth date adding up to 12, number of letters in his name and of course, the number of flowers in a dozen. And it must be about how TWELVE provides some of the best gift items (oh and flowers too) twelve months a year. TWELVE Boutique

Cape Town

By Lucas Mills

FLYING INTO CAPE TOWN, the first thing you notice is the color of the para-gliders against the ruggedness of Table Rock. The primitive magnificence of the natural landmark combined with the man made entertainment is a hint of what is to come.

The first stop, wanting to experience the feel of historic Cape Town when it was rough and ready filled with plenty of romance and brawny men, I opted to follow the cobblestones to the quaint De Waterkant Village. A period village that transports the occupants to the historic past while offering modern entertainments such as tapas bars, spas, art galleries, and boutique hotels. Cape Town dressed and pressed itself in preparation for the recent Football World Series. The extra amenities are still available and ready to be enjoyed.

When you’re ready to hit the nightlife scene, the Bronx Action Bar in De Waterkant village is a gay-friendly dance club. Moving body and soul, this popular club provides the latest sounds and beats. For a more laid-back atmosphere, Cafe’ Manhattan offers fine wines and creative cocktails, along with art exhibitions and live music on Thursdays.

When you’re in the mood for a light lunch nothing can compare to Vanilla’s for fresh sushi. The contemporary décor gleams in the warm Cape Town sun.

For day trips away from the city, I recommend the Aquila Game Preserve. Located only two hours from Cape Town, it offers a true safari feel with all the usual lions and alligators and zebras, oh my. For those of us interested in more calorie burning activities on the preserve try everything from horseback riding to trout fishing to cherry picking.

For a romantic dining experience, Anatolia’s Turkish restaurant offers savory tastings of Turkish mezze and lamb dishes. The authenticity of Turkey is evident with the friendly waitstaff, flaming shish kabobs, and enchanting belly dancers. Rosewater infused chocolate hot pot will wrap up the evening on a sweet note.

Before heading back to the northern hemisphere, be sure to shop at Cape Quarter. The shopping village offers everything from furniture to fashion, art to aromatherapy. Just the place to find that special souvenir to remind you of Cape Town and memories you will cherish for the rest of your life.

risotto Parmigianoreggiano Wheel Takes the Cake Back fat cleavage, lime green shoes and geeky, pimply cousin Hugh as a date… The season of summer weddings is here. As guests we think we own all the challenges – we give up our weekends to mingle with loony Aunt Bella (who is out of the home for the celebratory weekend) and seriously rack up debt on our credit cards paying for tricky travel, questionable outfits and outlandish wedding gifts. Meanwhile, truth is, the oath takers have upped their dosage of Xanax and quit AA. With the countless decisions they need to make; from where to sit divorced, hating family members and what color TP should be in the restrooms – it is amazing to me they actually show up to the nuptials! Steve Moore, Senior Social Account Executive from A Divine Event Catering assures me they can make the special day stress free and reduce the Xanax consumption to a minimum. Steve, what can be done in advance to make the execution easier? Having a realistic budget is crucial. Have a general idea of what your expectations are as a couple and what you want guests to remember as they leave the event. What trends are we seeing currently? Family Style dining (large tables seating 12 or more with shared dishes) and chef stations are high in demand as are the colors Black and White with accents of Reds, Purples and Turquoise. 26 FENUXE.COM

Are there more LGBT wedding requests? If so, what are the challenges? Definitely! The LGBT community is no longer afraid to celebrate their commitments and to make their moment their very own with large and festive events. The only challenge is the ice breaker. I think folks are a little unsure how they will be perceived but at A Divine Event we have a welcoming and diversified staff. Ultimately, they are looking for all the same factors and are we are thrilled to help. What is your favorite dish at Divine Event Catering? Our signature 100 pound Chef attended Risotto Parmigiano-Reggiano wheel filled with warm wild mushrooms, Leeks, Roasted tomatoes, Sun dried tomatoes, truffle oil and roasted garlic. To my vow seeking folk, I say check out A Divine Event Catering and I will get to calling Cousin Hugh because no matter how much I complain I do want to witness the magic moment when you say “I do”.

Sharing Our

Ceremony

Marriage is a public testament of love and even though we are still denied the right to join together in Georgia, that hasn’t stopped our affection. We were recently given the opportunity to discuss in great detail the joyous day five couples experienced when they chose to express their undying vows to each other. They have proven that our unions can and do work for the long haul. Their passion is stronger today than it ever has been. These are true stories of commitment and we delight in sharing them with you.

Cleo & Donna Meyer Nothing quite says romance like an intimate wedding aboard a private sailboat. Atlantans Cleo and Donna Meyer embraced the romantic wedding in 2002 when they cast off in their sailboat toward a golden-orange sunset on the peaceful azure waters of Key West, Florida and took their vows. In light of the couple’s parents not supporting the marriage at the time, the two decided it would be best not to invite any other guests and share the experience with only their best friend who officiated the ceremony. Two years later their lives were forever blessed when they had a son named Connor via donor insemination. “Every moment with Connor is a proud and delightful moment for both of us,” says Cleo. Donna legally adopted Connor so that both of them could be listed as parents on his birth certificate. ““It’s very difficult or impossible to make that happen here in Georgia if you live outside of Fulton or Dekalb County. We did a ton of research and hired an awesome attorney that made that process very easy” says Cleo. Cleo is an agent for State Farm and because the company now offers same-sex marriage benefits Cleo and Donna are planning to be legally married in a state that recognizes samesex unions. However, they worry about how they will be treated while seeking a marriage certificate in another state. They hope that they will not be mistreated in front of Connor who is now 7 and are making sure to do their research before they legally tie the knot.

Karla Kreitner & Donna Grindle Twenty years later and their love still burns strong. Karla Kreitner and Donna Grindle remember that wonderful day in 1998 when 15 of their closest friends and family gathered to witness their union. They point out that the State of Georgia didn’t recognize it then and still doesn’t recognize it today. It all happened at the beautiful courtyard garden at Mansion Restaurant which is now SCAD Ivy Hall. Up until the wedding day it had been very cold and rainy, but suddenly that morning the weather turned bright, sunny, and hot. Nothing could have been more perfect. They entered the courtyard each carrying long stemmed orchid bouquets and put them in a large vase at the base of the gazebo. Donna’s brother stood up and started the ceremony by saying “We are all here to witness something Karla swore she would never do again and, frankly, none of us ever expected my sister to ever do.” Then, he asked if anyone that wanted to share to take a iris from a small vase, speak and show their commitment to Karla and Donna and add it to the flower arrangement with their orchids. The irises surrounded their flowers which symbolized their support and the union. Surprisingly every person there stood up and said something. Both Karla and Donna were a teary messes by the time all the flowers were in place.

Donna’s vows created the same emotional struggle, but the pinnacle of emotion came when Donna reminded Karla what happened when Donna originally declared interest in her 7 years earlier. Karla responded by saying “Whatever you do don’t buy me flowers and don’t kiss me”. At that point, Donna reached for a hidden bouquet of roses and friends and family got up with additional arrangements and placed them all around Karla’s feet. Then, Donna kissed her. Once Karla stopped crying, Donna’s brother read the Commitment Contract aloud and everyone present signed it as a declaration of their support. Still very much in love, they celebrated their 20th anniversary June 11th and went back to Savannah where Karla first fell in love with Donna.

Karla really struggled to get through the vows with some level of composure. She knew she would be overwhelmed with emotion before she heard everyone speak. She had already declared she had to go first because she wouldn’t be able to get through her vows after Donna read her vows. Karla’s vows meant so much to her because just a few years earlier she was absolutely certain she would never do this again. She went to the top of Stone Mountain alone to write them. Her heart was always guarded and this day she exposed it all to everyone around. She made it through with a few pauses, deep breathes and sniffles.

Everyone present at the ceremony signed this contract to show their support of their union. Commitment Contract

On April 25, 1998 Karla Kreitner and Donna Grindle have agreed to commit to each other for life. Their intention is that this commitment holds the same emotional, physical, financial and spiritual implications as those sanctioned by the State of Georgia and United States governments for heterosexual couples who sign a marriage contract. They also expect others to respect this union in the same manner as they would any married couple. This ceremony serves as a method of announcing this intent and sharing their love and commitment with their friends and family. By your signature in witness of this ceremony you confirm that you support this union as stated above and understand this to be the intention of both Donna and Karla.

Del & Jason Shores When we think of fiery love we aren't usually thinking about real flames. However, Jason and Del's first ceremony took place in Malibu, California on the beach with forest fires and smoke as a very real backdrop. The ceremony was even occasionally paused when helicopters carrying water would fly overhead toward the burning forests. The good-natured couple merely smiled and pretended they were being hounded by persistent paparazzi. Jason and Del had a small ceremony with only sixty people in attendance because many of their family members back home refused to attend. Yet, Jason's mother and seventy year old grandmother were both in attendance and shared in the couple's happiness and pride. Fun Fact: Del and Jason's first dance was was Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me" and Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man".

When no one in Del's family even acknowledged his wedding invitation it was quickly confirmed who his real family was. The only person who did respond to his wedding invitation was his best friend from high school who explained her stance against gay people and declined to come. "I have a great family who are in my life, they just aren't my blood," Del explains. After the ceremony the new couple's attention turned to Del's best friend Sharyn who was dying of pancreatic cancer. Since her condition was their number one priortiy, they delayed their honeymoon until she passed. After her passing, they finally booked their long-awaited honeymoon: a fabulous trip to the Canary Islands off the coast of Northern Africa where they spent seven sun-drenched days and followed it with a three day stay in Madrid.

38 FENUXE.COM

Celebrities in Attendance: Leslie Jordan, Ian Somerhalder (Vampire Diaries), Beth Grant, Kevin Williamson (creator of Scream, Dawson's Creek, Vampire Diaries), Debby Holiday and Tony-winning singer Levi Kreis.

Eight years later to the day, Del and Jason became legally married and were part of the 18,000 gay couples who remain married in California after Prop 8 passed. It was a "sordid" affair because Del's two daughters, Ann Walker (LaVonda), Emerson Collins (their producing partner and "Max" in the Sordid Lives series), Del's ex-wife Kelley and her parents, who officiated, Newell Alexander (Wardell), and Rosemary Alexander (Dr. Eve) were the only ones in attendance. While happy they were able to marry in California before Prop 8 ended that legal right, they remain conflicted about having "marriage" when their fellow gay brothers and sisters cannot. But, for them, it fuels the fire and helps them continue to fight for equality!

Jason & His Grandmother Jessie Tip: If you're going to honeymoon in Madrid, Jason recommends that you "watch out for gypsies." Del had to literally push a young thief away who tried to steal his camcorder while the thief's female cohorts threw newspapers over the couple's belongings as a distraction. Jason explained that "this was in broad daylight in front of a Starbucks! Luckily, for all his queer nature, Del was able to handle the 7-year old little thief."

Maggie Lopez & Patt Cianciullo When Patt and Maggie met neither expected to find true love. In fact, when the duo first met in Connecticut they were both brokenhearted from previous relationships. Patt’s first partner of 25 years died of ovarian cancer in 2004. Maggie had spend 12 years supporting her first partner through medical school, internship, residency and a specialty fellowship only to have her partner leave during her first year of private practice. However, fate always has a way of bringing people together. While staying at her beach home one summer Maggie decided to find some new friends. She used an online service where she eventually met Patt. From the very first moment they met, they knew that they would spend their lives together. They were married that same year. The couple didn’t want a big wedding and instead chose a quiet ceremony with only a justice of the peace and two strangers as witnesses. The happy pair even skipped the big jewelry stores and ordered plain gold bands from HRC. Before their wedding day began to unfold they made two crucial stops before the ceremony. The first stop was at the Catholic church to pray for a long life together. Their second stop was at the gravesite of Patt’s first partner, to honor the first chapter of her life, before she embarked on the next.

Patt came over to move Maggie with the two moving trucks (because one truck wasn't enough!)

40 FENUXE.COM

Maggie and Patt are fierce advocates for Marriage Equality and recently spoke at the 2011 HRC Atlanta Dinner

“We don’t take a second of our lives together for granted” The blissful newlyweds took a week off to honeymoon in Provincetown, MA and then had post-nuptial receptions in several states where they had many friends. Their reception in Atlanta was held at Roxx. “To find such deep love when we least expected it, has been a miracle. We don’t take a second of our lives together for granted.” said Maggie in reflection.

Jeff Goelz & Colin Wright When Jeff Goelz and Colin Wright decided to tie the knot they wanted a wedding that they would always remember. So, the couple decided to take their vows at picturesque Duval Beach Club in Key West and shared the day with their overwhelmingly supportive immediate and extended families. The only hold-out was Jeff’s father who has since come around to supporting his son’s marriage. After the ceremony, the wedding party took a high-speed catamaran approximately sixty miles into the beautiful Gulf of Mexico to Fort Jefferson - Dry Tortugas National Park. Beyond the natural beauty of the island and its famous bird life, Dry Tortugas has a colorful history including legends of swashbuckling pirates, sunken gold and military pursuits (the island sits directly above Havana). The party then traveled back to Key West for a scrumptious dinner reception and karaoke at Camille’s Restaurant.

After their east coast wedding festivities, the newlyweds jetted off for a romantic honeymoon in Hawaii. Colin grew up in Oahu and the happy couple arrived just in time to make an appearance at his high school reunion. Four years later when California momentarily legalized civil unions, Jeff and Colin flew to Santa Barbara County to obtain a legally recognized marriage certificate. “We’ve been very fortunate that we’ve not had any significant challenges as a married couple related to our sexuality except for a disapproving look from the Court Clerk at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse when we applied for our Marriage License on August 8, 2008, but the officiating Judge was fantastic - even showing us his chambers after our ceremony,” remembers Jeff. Fun Fact: Jeff and Colin never had a first dance in light of a “toe-stepping experience” several years prior at what was then Hoedowns where both agreed then that dancing “just wasn’t our thing.”

Dear ILOL,

Dear Mary, My partner and I have been together for five years. Everything is just about perfect between us, but now he wants to make it official and get married in Massachusetts. I don’t believe in the concept of marriage – it’s a straight institution in my opinion. He’s picking flower arrangements already. What can I do to get him to back off about it? Signed,

In Love Off Lavista

A “straight” institution? Really? Couples wearing matching wind suits is a straight institution, eHarmony is a straight institution, heterosexual sex is a straight institution. Marriage is a tax break, my friend. Are you 100% certain of his motivation here? Is he feeling insecure about losing you for any reason? You mentioned flower arrangements; is it possible that he just wants to have a gorgeous party where he is the center of attention and has figured out, like so many straight women before him, that a wedding is the way to go? If that’s the case, I feel like you guys could come to some sort of compromise – have a “celebrating our love” party or something. Or maybe he’s still just hanging on to that image of a big, traditional wedding with the white dress and everything, even though he’s rapidly approaching 40 and is a single mom and knows it’s probably never going to happen for her. Him. I meant him, we’re talking about him! Letting go of such a deeply ingrained imagined eventuality is a long, hard process. I think this is all about whether you’re committed more to this ideology or to your guy. I mean if this is huge to you, well, he should probably have known that all along and it isn’t fair for him to push. If it’s something you sort of passively believe, then maybe it’s worth making a sacrifice to make him happy, or at least compromising with a hippie-love-fest commitment ceremony.

Kay

Haven’t you heard, she’s M.a.j.o.r. and you will be

hearing her name quite a lot in the near-future. Kay is a young artist who is part of a new generation of females about to take over the charts bringing a fresh new sound to the music industry. She has a cutting edge appeal with hints of funk, pop, hip hop and retro vibes. Yes, funk, pop, hip hop and retro, blended together to form a deliciously refreshing smooth style. Hailing from Los Angeles by way of Nova Scotia, she has already been privileged to work with huge names such as Tiesto, Ryan Tedder (of One Republic), Evan Bogart, Dr Rosen Rosen (Beyonce, Britney Spears, Adam Lambert) and Bangladesh. She describes herself to be a mixture of “Outkast, Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliot”. We can’t wait to get our hands on her “My Name Is Kay/M.A.J.O.R” EP, which will be released this summer in the US. Shortly before she begins a leg opening for Ke$ha’s Canadian tour, we sat down with her to discuss her music, the industry in general, and her thoughts on them gays.

56 FENUXE.COM

Fenuxe: First of all, congrats on your E.P. release in Canada! When will we be seeing a release in the U.S.? Kay: Thank you so much, I’m really excited about it! As far as a release in the States, it should be out this Summer so watch for it.

Fenuxe: You are finishing up your album right now. Is it difficult to choose a select amount of songs from your entire repertoire?

Fenuxe: What mainstream female artists

inspire you?

Kay: I think all female artists inspire me

in different ways. Like Katy Perry; I love watching her perform. That inspires me... they all do!

Fenuxe: How do you feel about other up

and coming artists that are about to breakout?

Kay: Extremely difficult! I like to think

Kay: I really like The Weeknd and Frank Ocean. I have both of those albums on repeat on my iTunes. I’m really enjoying Odd Future right now too.

Fenuxe: Taking the step from struggling

Fenuxe: We love you down here in Atlanta. Have you ever been to Atlanta or the south and do you have any tour plans coming up?

songs are kind of like babies so if that’s the case, I’ve had tons of them! A few have to get cut out of the deal, right? It’s tough.

artist to being able to work with huge music makers like Tiesto, Ryan Tedder, and Dr Rosen Rosen is a dream come true! What was the turning point in your career when you began to realize these dreams?

Kay: Getting a record deal really helped.

Finally people would work with me! It really is amazing. They’re all outstanding. I still don’t think I’ve fully realized it yet.

Fenuxe: You’ve been compared to a mixture of Nelly Furtado, Nicki Minaj, Timberlake, and Andre3000. With the music industry currently being dominated by huge female artists, do you feel a sense of pressure to compete or do you feel you have your own truly unique category? Kay: Wow, those are amazing comparisons...

thank you. I don’t feel pressured to compete whatsoever. There’s only one Nicki Minaj, there’s only one Beyonce, and we’re all different. Hopefully people love my music but, regardless, I’m just going to be myself.

Kay: Some of my favourite people in the world come from Atlanta. Everybody that comes from there just seems so legit! Hopefully I can tour the ATL soon. Fenuxe: Atlanta has a huge gay population, one of the largest in the Southeast. How do you feel about your gay audience? Kay: I love my gay fans and really love

going to gay clubs! I’m so happy to have anybody supporting me really; it means a lot and is a huge honour.

Fenuxe: You’re opening for Ke$ha this

summer in Toronto. Are you prepared for tour life?

Kay: I’m extremely excited. Touring is one

of my favourite things. I love songwriting and being in the studio but I’m the happiest when I’m on tour so I can’t wait!

HEy Girl HEy

What’s up y’all? Hollllerrrrr! I'm so excited I was asked to write for Fenuxe Magazine. Tyler and William are two great guys who not only have a great vision for the magazine, but they also have a great vision for working in our diverse community to make a difference. I'm excited to work with them for my birthday fundraiser for Jerusalem House, as well as other projects, so be sure to support Fenuxe magazine and the creative team behind the magazine! Speaking of Jerusalem House, I joined the Board of Directors back in January, and I need your help. Please go to www.facebook.com/ homedepotfoundation and vote for Jerusalem House once a day until June 30th. With your votes, Jerusalem House could win $25,000. Just a few clicks could make a huge impact. I had an amazing Memorial Day weekend performing at Lumberjacks Campground. I was really impacted by the complete and total acceptance for everyone. There was something for everyone, men, women, twinks, otters and bears, smooth and hairy, young and old, black and white...and every descriptor you can think of in between. The campgrounds are great too! They have a beautiful pool with an enclosed bar, and a huge nightclub with full bar and dance floor. They also have the cleanest tent sites with electric hook ups, RV sites, and cabins. You owe it to yourself to get away for a relaxing weekend at Lumberjacks Campground. Tell them Mary Edith sent you!

So here’s my rant for the week... Do you ever see gay people making disparaging comments about other gay people in our community? For example: making fun of an effeminate or flamboyant guy, a guy in leather chaps, a ‘bull’ dyke, a transvestite or transgendered person, or just being generally catty? Maybe its just me, or maybe I’m getting older, but it really pisses me off. When did being different equal being wrong or laughable? I just wonder, if we don’t accept ourselves in all of our glorious diversity, then we can’t expect others to accept us either. Our own insecurities fuel our fear of others. The next time you hear someone making nasty comments, I challenge you to take a stand. Defending those who are different in our community is defending our community as a whole. Don’t forget, there is beauty and value in everyone, sometimes you have to take the time to discover it.

Love and lashes,
