FENUXE 11.29.2012 if you’re a shopaholic like me, Black Friday was one of the best days of the year (and the most expensive), but don’t forget to add a few extra toys to your shopping list! For the Kid in All of Us is holding their annual Toy Party at The America’s Mart 3 building downtown where toy donations will be collected to brighten the holidays of Georgia’s disadvantaged youth. If you’ve never been to the Toy Party you’re in for a wonderful holiday treat! It’s one of the highlights of the holiday season and when I see the thousands of presents and the massive support from our community, I get goosebumps every year. I haven’t had a visit from Santa in quite a few years, but I can still remember the thrill and joy of waking up Christmas morning and seeing the shiny presents under the tree. The Toy Party makes this a reality for thousands of children throughout our area and they can’t do it without great toy donations! Join us at the festivities December 2 at 5pm. I’ll see you there!

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO THE MAKING OF A WHITE HOUSE SEX SCANDAL:

PROPER ATTIRE REQUIRED Tony Davenport, Fashion Contributor

A

ccording to a recent survey conducted by the condom company, Durex, 31% of American men say the place they would most like to make love is the White House. (Dr. Freud, where are you?) Couple this with Thomas Fuller’s observation, “Good clothes open all doors,” and it becomes abundantly clear that we have got to get shopping for this fantasy to come true. After all, it is very unlikely that Michelle and Barack will be opening their home to couples wanting to sex it up in the White House anytime soon. So, until they do, the majority of us will have to sneak our way in like the Salahis — a couple who purportedly skirted security by dressing the part in a tux and red sari.

Not being a big fan of men wearing saris, I recommend building your look around an amazing topcoat. Not only are they sexy as hell, they are incredibly practical. Who doesn’t love a coat that can

be worn with a suit one day and jeans the next? At the top of my list are the military-inspired coats from Bottega Veneta. (Thank you, Tomas Maier.) Next in line is Nigel Cabourn’s wool topcoat that makes my heart skip a beat. And for those with an edgier side, check out the layered leather and wool topcoat from Givenchy ... a clear standout. Now you’re probably asking what a stealth intruder such as yourself should wear under such amazing outerwear? Might I suggest one of the patterned sport coats that have taken off in popularity since their runway debuts for Fall? Personally, I have several favorites. At the top of my list is the Raven Print Blazer by Alexander McQueen. Take a trip to the men’s department at Neiman Marcus to fall in love with this beauty in person. And while you are there, check out my next three favorites: DSquared2’s Tokyo Velvet Jacket, Etro’s Paisley Jacket, and Michael Bastian’s Plaid

Dinner Jacket. You may just want to wear one of these babies home. If subtlety is your thing, consider Maison Martin Margiela’s three piece camel suit at Barney’s. Then make your way over to Ralph Lauren to admire the Black Label double breasted suit in charcoal. And if you’re comfortable amping up the sex appeal, slip on a black two button wool suit at Dolce & Gabbana. (Like a glove, I tell you! Like a glove!) Please note that if you DO choose a suit over a patterned jacket, be sure to pair it with a shirt and tie in complementing patterns for a modern take on a classic look. Inarguably, the item that can make or break any outfit (or covert operation) are the shoes! Think about it: How many of us are guilty of writing off a guy just because his shoes were too square ... or too pointy ... or just too plain ugly? (Be honest. I won’t tell.) So to avoid being turned away at the gate, invest in the monk strap - a

shoe that transitions effortlessly from suits to jeans and pairs perfectly will all of the above-mentioned fashion. Make a trail to Gucci, John Lobb, and Florsheim to find the variation best for you. Finally, we each have to consider what our partners in crime will be wearing in this scenario, and since I can only answer for myself, I feel no shame in telling you that I imagine my guy wearing head to toe Tom Ford in white, white, and more white. (Underneath it all will be a pair of 2(x)ist camouflage briefs that just may come in handy during a quick getaway across the Rose Garden.) In fact, he will be so dazzling that Michelle will have no choice but to wave us in from the second-floor balcony. Now, if getting all dolled up seems like way too much work to gain entrance into the White House, allow me to make another suggestion. Rumor has it that a 100K donation will earn you a night in the Lincoln Bedroom. (Sex and a write off !) All said and done, I ultimately hope that this article helps a vast number of men get that much closer to realizing their fantasy of having sex in the White House... and to earning bragging rights to some of the best Facebook posts, EVER! 2(x)ist Shipley & Halmos

an you think of a better combination of “feelgood” words? Oh yeah - forgot to throw “cocktails” in there, too. If this sounds like the sugar plum dreams you’ll be enjoying later this holiday season, then be advised that it is, in fact, a reality. Back for its fourth year, the 2012 Atlanta Santa Speedo Run will benefit CURE Childhood Cancer and has set a fundraising

This will also mark the second year I have participated in this particular fundraising event. You may remember last year’s Santa Speedo Run that benefitted “Bert’s Big Adventure,” an organization that provides allexpense-paid trips to Disney World for financially-challenged families with children who have terminal illnesses. As excited as I was to be a part of that fundraiser, I’m even more excited about the fact that the Santa Speedo Run changes its beneficiary each year, allowing us to spread awareness about even more great organizations and causes while making an impact in the lives of those less fortunate.

Representing Fenuxe Magazine, I will be running in the Atlanta Santa Speedo Run and hope you can do the same, but if you can’t, please consider skipping that morning latte or dinner out and donate toward our fundraising page (the link is at the end of this article). With your help we can raise money for research, education, and support for children with cancer. Come out, watch us all sprint down Peachtree in our Speedos and festive costumes, and have a cocktail with the great and courageous guys and gals who are participating. It’s always an awesome party and with a strong gay following, who knows?! Maybe you’ll even find a stocking stuffer to take home.

URBAN CULTURE

Holiday Nights, garden Lights Nico Stoerner -Staff Writer

A sparkling spectacle in the heart of Midtown, the Atlanta Botanical Garden has once again turned into a wonderland blanketed with glowing lights and dazzling displays. Working to be an example in the community, all of their lights - more than one million of them - are LED bulbs or low-energy consuming products and is considered the largest light show in the country to “go all green.” Covering 30 acres in all the colors of the rainbow, this has quickly become an urban holiday tradition. “This year’s show is going to be bigger, brighter, and better than ever,” says the Garden’s Executive Director Mary Pat Matheson.

The display also includes many new attractions. Stroll through the Cascades Garden which will include the new “Liquid Lights” installment featuring blue and white lighted fountain sprays and water curtains. From there, move on to the “Starry Night Walk,” inspired by Van Gogh’s famous painting, which sparkles with dozens of swirling stars twinkling along a camellia-lined walkway. If you have a special someone you’d like to bring along, this is the perfect place to steal a kiss. You’ll also have the pleasure of some beautiful high-tech displays indoors throughout the conservatories. On your way to the Fuqua Orchid Center, stop at the Great Lawn and enjoy the musical installation of “Orchestral Orbs,” a frenetic topiary light show choreographed to

festive holiday music which you may have seen last year. Other displays include the “Glittery Galaxy,” the “Funky Forest,” and the Edible Garden’s “Brilliant Bugs,” along with the tropical laser lights in the conservatory. Keep an eye out for the “frelves,” the frog-elves which will be hidden along the paths for visitors to find. Also check out the amazing floriculture displays like the 30-foot-long wall of live poinsettias and orchids as well as an 18-foot-tall poinsettia tree. Sate your thirst at the new Glow Bar, roast some s’mores in a fire, or check out the delicious dinner menu from MetroFresh. TICKETS: Adults $20 ($17 w/ garden membership), Children $14 ($11 w/ garden membership)

PRANCING POOCHES PARADE AT THE GARDEN Finally! The Reindog Parade, literally the only day of the year when you can bring your dog to the Botanical Gardens. Beginning at 11 A.M. on Dec. 8, packs of pooches and puppies alike will parade across the stage in their finest holiday attire. A panel of local celebrity judges will dole out prizes for Best Puppy, Best Adult, Best Botanical, Best Dog-Owner Dress-Alike, Best Dog Pack, and finally - Best in Show. In addition there will be a Doggie Expo offering canine-specific products, services,

and information as well as refreshments available under the Pup Tent. You may also want to take a photo of your darling doggy with Botanical Saint Nick. THE CATCH: All dogs must be preregistered and forms are available on the Garden’s website or via reindog@ atlantabotanicalgarden.org. The cost, in addition to regular Garden admission, is $15 per dog, or $18 at the door (max two dogs per owner).

How Far Away is

Serenity? (A Quarter of a Tank) Berlin Sylvestre - Staff Writer

A

mere hour and a half north of Atlanta lies a quaint, clean, picturesque mountain town filled with tasteful boutiques, inviting eateries, riveting flora, and best of all: long, winding roads that lead to rustic, tranquil cabins high atop the darling little hamlet of Blue Ridge, Ga. The trip to Blue Ridge is remarkably bereft of the stress that travel can sometimes present. Heading out, we aimed our car north on 575 and literally made zero turns until we pulled into Mountain Top Cabin Rentals’ office to grab our keys. Leaves smacked into our windshield as we closed in on the town, like fliers from the mountains themselves advertising a winsome wilderness just up the road.

22 : No vember 15, 2012

The depth of relaxation that settles around you as the traffic and noise disappear can’t be overstated. Lanes get bigger and the claustrophobic choke of city congestion falls away as a languid company of trees sway lazily alongside your car. To locals, the changing of the leaves is considered a color show, but it could be more of a color competition with bursts of vermillion and sienna dominating the terrain while orange and canary grapple for second — a complaisant marigold affair. We wound up the mountain, anticipation sky-high, and pulled into a rocky driveway lined with Herculean evergreens. Trying to stay in the car long enough to park was an immediate challenge, but we managed not to botch that. To step out into the neighboring hinterland of Blue Ridge and hear no honking, no sirens, no ringtones, no barking, no engines, no loudspeakers, nothing but the whispering of thousands of trees and the concession of gravel crunching underfoot effects an instant mental

massage for the weary. Achievement unlocked: Tranquility. The moment we stepped into the cabin, our mouths fell open at how beautiful the place was. Every corner was masterfully crafted from hardwoods with spruce frames and white pine siding, as though the mountain itself fashioned us a nest from its stores. Our gasps echoed through the vaulted ceiling as we opened door after door of suites filled with expertly arranged furnishings and pre-emptively heated bathrooms. We marveled at the grandiosity of the landscape that unrolled before us from the balcony as one blue peak overtook the next in endless rounds, leaving no mystery to the town’s namesake. Being in the city for so long, we almost forgot what clean air smelled like. With amenities that transients won’t find in a hotel, the cabins are stocked in the most thoughtful of ways that grants guests the luxury of packing light. Every cabinet in the kitchen was filled with all the necessary tools

to entertain a full house for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pots, pans, spatulas, flatware, mugs, saucers, plates, strainers, pot holders — all items a kitchen aficionado appreciates, well-organized and at the ready. So accommodating are Mountain Top’s cabins, that they left food and water bowls for our animals. (Many of their properties are pet-friendly, which makes planning that much easier.) Interestingly enough, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s most recent census shows Fannin County (wherein Blue Ridge resides) is home to the third-largest population of gay couples in Georgia. As such, you don’t need to bring the “family” — they’re already there. I have to admit: Having never been to the mountains for any longer than it took to drive over them on the way elsewhere, I was initially apprehensive that we’d have bears, raccoons, and possums barging onto the property to terrorize the camp. Not so. In fact, when we did hear the occasional rustle in the leaves

XPLORE

far below the balcony, we all got a little giddy taking guesses as to what it could be. The place is just too gorgeous for anything but exhilaration. Without exaggeration, it’s one of the best ways to decompress a month’s worth of strife in a single weekend. Contrary to life in the city, daybreak in the high country is worth waking for. The sun somehow rises gently in the mountains, its softened rays dipping down into the valleys and climbing sleepily up autumnal hillsides to slip quietly, courteously through cabin windows. The brisk mountain breeze ushers in more of those leafy fliers, the thrum of them on the porch like a ceremonious reminder that you’re still in heaven. To wake revived and realize there’s a whole new day of revelation ahead is something we lose, being the busy people in the big city that we are — but we can have that back. Right up the road in Blue Ridge, Ga. lies the majesty of nature, rest, and (perhaps best of all) silence.

BLUE RIDGE OLIVE OIL COMPANY You may not be aware of this, but the olive oil with which you’ve been cooking is swill. For those of you familiar with great cooking and even better nutrition, you may also be aware of an astounding fact: 70% of the extra virgin olive oil sold is adulterated - cut with cheaper oils. With lots of oil options that have high polyphenols (these help lower your low density lipoprotein “LDL” levels and help ensure a long, healthy life) as well as delicious balsamic vinegar infusions like “Blood Orange,” “Dark Chocolate,” “Persian Lime,” and “Coconut” among many others, you’ll be more than impressed. Want a great gift for a friend or for yourself? Get a sampler pack of your favorites for an amazing $29.99 - made to order.

TASTINGS of BLUE RIDGE A “must see and do” when visiting North Georgia, this fantastic little eatery offers some of the best of Georgia’s local wines paired with great service and delicious bites. Raise a glass of 100% Georgia-grown Chardonnay, or take a taste of great local wines like the Wolf Mountain white “Plenitude” or the reds “Instinct” or “Howling Wolf Red.” With tastings ranging from $15-$20 and artisan cheese boards as low as $14, you’ll be sure to enjoy a long afternoon here.

EATS

Dining at the Crossroads of Memories: 10th & Piedmont Berlin Sylvestre - Staff Writer

On the normally tranquil corner of 10th and Piedmont, guys in hard hats carry around nail guns, sledge hammers, drills, levels, and rolls of blueprints while yelling into walkie-talkies, leaving us to wonder: What exactly is going on in the place that used to be Outwrite Books? Sean Yeremyan (pronounced yedda-mee-YAHN) doesn’t mind answering that question. Slated for sometime midDecember, Sean and his brother Gilbert, the entrepreneurial duo behind Gilbert’s and HOBNOB, plan to open the appropriately named 10th & Piedmont, a chic new eatery whose food aims to imbue local (Southern) ingredients into more global dishes. “We want an upscale feel to a restaurant that is also

approachable,” Sean explains of the inspiration behind 10th. “Something that is homey, yet elegant.” Apart from being a highlyanticipated new restaurant, 10th & Piedmont will also serve as a new hotspot for the Midtown crowd, transforming into a late-night vodka bar after the conclusion of dinner. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, 10th & Piedmont will feature a rotating lineup of DJs to match the energy of other beat-centric hangouts. Though the design team has completely gutted the interior of the former bookstore, the Yeremyan brothers wanted to retain the same type of environment that Outwrite espoused.

“This corner is more than just a business venue for us and for our community – It represents equality and diversity.”

“We want to carry on the legacy [of Outwrite],” Sean told Fenuxe. “People will be able to come in, have a seat, and relax.” As with Outwrite, large windows will give guests a familiar view of the bustling corner outside while a relaxed atmosphere with a more open floor plan will facilitate mingling among the crowd. A newly-created rooftop trellis will run the length of the restaurant, giving the place a unique and updated look that locals and visitors can’t miss. Patrons can also expect complimentary valet parking just across the street at Blue MedSpa after 7 P.M. “This corner is more than just a business venue for us and for our community,” Sean said. “It represents equality and diversity.” The restaurant’s cuisine will feature the talents of Executive Chef Brett Ring, a south Florida native who earned his degree at the prestigious Johnson and Wales

University. The busy young chef, whose work can also be seen at HOBNOB and Gilbert’s, aims to entice the culinarily adventurous with dinner options such as lamb meatballs, Southern arancini, and boiled peanut hummus. Chef Brett’s seasonally-inspired dinner productions will be carefully portioned into small, savory bites — perfect for groups to share. At lunch, the restaurant will provide counter service to guests, keeping the menu simple and organic. The Brothers Yeremyan have certainly come along way, both literally and figuratively. Hailing from Turkey, they studied business management in their native country and Brussels before coming to Atlanta and opening Gilbert’s, their first restaurant. “It was originally a sandwich shop,” Sean admits. “But a year later, we promoted it a full-service restaurant.” They later opened HOBNOB, to much acclaim, and saw the creation of their

parent company, Communitas Hospitality. Now, with 10th & Piedmont, Atlantans can expect the welcoming atmosphere and quality of food we’ve always received from the Yeremyan brothers. “We’ve been working on this for quite awhile,” said Sean, a broad smile stretching across his face. He admits that 10th & Piedmont is nearly a year in the making, but the team is excited to roll out Communitas Hospitality’s third installment for the enjoyment of the community. From what we can tell at Fenuxe, the feeling is mutual.

Hey Poodles! I’ve been going to all these holiday parties and all these people insist on handing me drinks as soon as I get off my rascal scooter. As I’ve said before, I don’t drink [much] and I don’t appreciate when some of you inseminate otherwise. I crashed attended a holiday party last night at the home of a dear friend stranger in the exotic locale of Brookhaven Jonesboro. From what I remember of the party, it was a great time had by all. I made my famous chocolate dump cake with peanuts which surprisingly no one touched. Everyone must have been concerned about the peanut recall. I remember dancing grinding with some man until somebody had called me a white elephant and started passing me all these awful gifts. Clearly, I must have been slipped a roofie drank too much because when I woke up was asked to leave or they would call the cops, I was missing a few key articles of clothing in the bathroom. After grabbing a curtain panel and stapler, I vowed was issued a restraining order to never go there again. It just goes to show you never know who you can trust. Even Santa Claus! As a little girl of 21, every time I sat in Santa’s lap at the mall, it felt like he was trying to stick the North Pole up my chimney. Then he wanted to complain about the lump of coal I gave him! Well!? Of course my favorite part of the holiday season is the Christmas music. I just love that new little lesbian’s Christmas album “Under the Mistletoe by Justina Bieber”. She looks just like a boy. Her video of the “Little Drummer Boy” dressed up in leather

72 : No vember 15, 2012

bondage gear brought a tear to my eye and a fart to my butt. Hauntingly beautiful. Finally, what Christmas wouldn’t be complete without the joy drama of family. My great great grandmother Nana Split Pitts will be joining me, my ex-husband Barry Hinden Berg [yes I did take on his name while we were married for that one week-Mary Edith Pitts-Burgh] and my evil sister, Olive Pitts and her 14 adopted children from Africa or Octomom, I can’t keep it straight. Anyway, Nana will be celebrating her 117th birthday during this season so Olive bought her an urn and a match. I guess she’s on Santa’s naughty list. All joking aside--Have a wonderful holiday season and make every moment count! Love and lashes,

Mary Edith Pitts Please send comment and feedback to me at maryedith99@gmail.com
