Nico: “How do you come up with your look? Ursula: “Ursula is ALL about sparkle, so there will always be some glitter, sequins, and rhinestones! Today, for instance, we’re working for the ‘Pink Cadets’ Softball Team to help raise money for Breast Cancer research, so I’ve used pink throughout my outfit. Fully professed Sisters can change their look based on the occasion. Novices and other younger members have a more strict dress code.”

Nico: What are some of the craziest things people have said to you or asked you because of your outfits? Ursula: “Well, we get a lot of ‘what are y’all doing?’ At last year’s Pride Parade one of the TV Commentators said: ‘Is that Santa Claus in Drag?!’ However, the most common question we get is ‘can I get my picture taken with y’all?’ Regardless, every question leads to an interesting discussion about our organization.”

Nico: What do each of your looks mean to you? Ursula: “There may be other Sisters who have a more esoteric philosophy, but I use my look to get attention so I can spread the word about our work and the charities we are promoting. However, in 1979 the original Order of Sisters from the Castro were more focused on using the shock-factor and ‘gender-f@%king’ to bring awareness to their community.”

Nico: Do you do your own makeup? How long does it take? Ursula: “Actually a few Sister’s boyfriends do their makeup, but I’d say on the whole most of us do our own and we each have our own style. For me it takes between 1 ½ - 2 hours. Our Abbess [Rapture Divine Cocks] can do hers in as little as 30 minutes, though!” Nico: How often do you come out ‘manifested’ (in full dress)? Ursula: “I’ve been called a ‘manifestation whore’ because I manifest as much as 5 times a week, but generally it is once or twice a week.” Nico: What are your favorite charities? How do you choose? Ursula: “My primary charity is Lost-n-Found Youth. I have tons of fun with the Big Gay Game Show - which, if you haven’t been, is great. Once a year there’s the ‘East Point Possums’ show, which is phenomenal, and I love ‘Power 2 Endure’ who help struggling gay people with a broad network of services to improve their quality of life.” Nico: Why is dressing up the way you do NOT drag? “Well, as RuPaul said “We’re born naked, the rest

ATLANTA Julia and Susanne Sugarbaker inspired the Atlanta Sisters [Flaming Sugarbakers], and they regard Dixie Carter as one of their Saints.

is drag.” So being a Sister is a form of drag, but falls outside the traditional realms of classic/ glam and camp . . . and then there’s the thought that drag and performing go hand in hand but only a small percentage of Sisters would be called performers.” Nico: What is the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you while dressed up? Ursula: “Well, we were out on a condom ministry and there was one really cute (drunk) boy who kept asking me for a piggy-back ride. I declined but as we were making our final pass through the bar, he had climbed up on a ledge, of sorts, and jumped on my back as I went by. Needless to say, it wasn’t graceful and I ended up with back problems and the boy dislocated his shoulder.” Nico: Have you ever had sex while still in full face? Ursula: “That’s known within the Sisters as a “clown f@%k” . . . and I haven’t participated (and know better than to repeat any of the stories I know about this!)” Nico: How does your family feel about the Sisters? People at work? Ursula: “My parents have passed and I’m an only child, so there’s really no family to voice opinions (though I doubt they’d be very supportive). I’ve always been out at work and have introduced Ursula to them over the last 3 years . . . and they are incredibly supportive!” Nico: What do you like most about Atlanta’s gay community? Ursula: “We’re a very diverse community and our willingness to step up and help out is amazing.” Nico: What do you find most annoying about Atlanta’s gay community? Ursula: “This was easy to answer - the cliquesystem that so prevalent throughout Atlanta . . . bears here, twinks there, fetish somewhere else, etc . . . However, having said that, the Sisters have been very well received where-ever we go (if after some discussion about who/what we are).”

“Come on in,

Precious!” Nico Stoerner, Staff Writer

Many people will accidentally wander in and stop dead in their tracks when they see everything inside. It’s actually fabulous because it filters the people who come here and we don’t get all the judgmental, self-righteous people who can ruin the atmosphere. We even call our clientele “parishioners”. It’s fabulous. Although we had an issue with a particular priest for a while in the beginning it has been great since then. Nico: Can you explain your fascination with Sister Louisa? Who is she? Sister Louisa: She’s my alter ego. I made her up about 17 years ago when friends of mine were having an art show here in town and I wanted to participate. At the time I had an antique shop and I had lots of religious “paint by number” paintings in the show and decided to do similar work to what I do now, writing different sayings on them. I didn’t want to use my own name so I came up with Sister Louisa. Even the prices on my art came from important numbers from the Bible. Most of my art is conceptual and utilizes wordplay.

Nico: Is it true that Lady Gaga tried to purchase a piece from you that you wouldn’t sell? Sister Louisa: She didn’t try to purchase a piece of art but the plaster Virgin Mary that’s underneath the Elvis painting at the main bar. She said she would pay any price for it… it was a Monday night before we had a really strong following and it was a little slow, so walking in and seeing her in her thigh-high boots on the couch upstairs was just fantastic. Looking back I wish I asked her for something like ‘$66,666.66’ but my reason for not selling it to her when she asked was ‘well if I sell her Jesus will be motherless’.

I went to Presbyterian seminary in the 80’s and ended up not getting ordained because I couldn’t commit to all of their beliefs. Ironically, the reason I couldn’t become ordained was because I couldn’t repeat everything they wanted me to and they kept telling me that “they’re just words…” so now I “just put words” on these paintings. In fact, I even learned to bartend as a hobby and ended up doing it for 10 years. I also got a BA in hospitality much earlier, which brought everything together. It’s all been a great journey.

Nico: We all heard about your recent issue with vandalism – what happened? Sister Louisa: I just got a call at 5AM from my security service: the four front windows were busted out, the taps were flowing and all the liquor was busted and poured onto the floor… but the vandalism backfired because with all the press and community support as a result of it business has never been better. I faced it head-on and started posting commentary and pictures on Facebook because I just didn’t want people to think that it’s dangerous out here when it’s really just a developing area. It ended up really building the community rather than tearing it down.

Nico: What are some of the craziest responses you have gotten from your art? Sister Louisa: EVERYBODY in here in here is going to HELL… My Daddy is going to come in here and get every one of you!” Some people will just rant and rave when they come in but on the whole people love it. 18 : SEPTEMBER AUGUST 23,20, 6,2012 2012 2012

Nico: What about your life? How did you go from a married priest to Sister Louisa? Sister Louisa: I followed THE PATH that many people from the Fifties followed; schooling, job, marriage, kids, and community.

In my early twenties I married a woman in her mid-thirties with two teenage kids, then we had our own child when I was 25. It was a downtown Marietta storybook life. I was a Father, the PTA President, a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church, founded a still thriving neighborhood association, was on Boards of The United Way, and The Cobb Landmark Association, etc. …I was in deep… Beginning my search for truth, we divorced after 9 years, was single for 5 years, then married again for another 5 years… Divorced again, then love through me a curve and I fell for an Episcopal Priest… a man. Today, I like both woman and men, but men leave before morning (and I do enjoy waking up alone), so I’ve stuck with the men. I love the life that I’ve led, the journey that it has taken me on, the child that it blessed me with. Through it all I realize that, if there is a God, there is nothing that I can say or do that would diminish the love that He or She has for me. All I do know is that HELL IS HOT, and I had to learn to F@%K FEAR to get through the darkness and into the light. Grant Henry/Sister Louisa The Happiest Man Alive!

“A Heretic’s

You’ve been around. We all know it – and you’ve got some great stories to tell as a result… but now those stories are old. SOLUTION: You could stand for some 100-proof Amsterdam fun. Whether for the “café” scene, the hot boys, the bars, the variety of hallucinogenic adventures to be had or even – dare we say it – the Red Light District; Amsterdam has something to offer each and every one of us. As this holiday season approaches cabin fever sets in among many, if not most gays; but with a brisk bacchanalian dose of heresy you, too, can face the holidays with a little extra cheer. Upon arriving at the Centraal Station make your way into the Red Light District to check in at your favorite boutique hotel (Hotel CC – trust us: it will make the commute back that much easier). and freshen up – it’s going to be a long and (hopefully) bumpy ride. Cross the street and head down to “The Greenhouse” for some of the world’s finest green (Lemon and Amnesia Haze are the best as they let you remain energetic, or if you want to indulge in some serious relaxation try White Widow), or walk a little farther to the hip café “BaBa” where a life-size statue of the Indian God Ganesh (the remover of obstacles) will help you overcome your inhibitions long enough to down an amazing cosmic brownie. From there take a walk along the canals, or rent a bike to take in the scenery, and eventually find yourself at one of the world’s most illustri-

There the incredible Xavier Bouterse will show you all the latest toys, clothes, and experience-enhancing products you could have ever imagined… many of which are available only in Europe. Take a peek upstairs, check out a video, meet a friend… and give him a ride (or a f@%k) that will

build your own stir-fry based on your diet and take it with you as you go to your next destination. Finally, make your way to Club Church – the aptly named gay cruising bar with 2 floors of play and dance areas. With a variety of dj’s, slings, condoms, a St. Andrew’s cross, and plenty of toys, you’ll probably be there the better part of the night… Here’s to your new experiences and stories…

Soul Food,

or Food for the Soul?

Nico Stoerner, Staff Writer

WE’RE ALL FAMILIAR with “soul food”: fried chicken, potatoes, cake, cornbread, BBQ, ice cream… anything with butter… However, have we really learned what it means to feed the soul? The reason we like “soul food” is obvious: humans are built to like salty, fatty, and sugary foods because they are nutrient-rich and rarely occur in nature. In our modern world, however, they can be found in the check out aisle at nearly any place of business.

IF

only feeding your soul was so easy.

Many different desires and cravings can be explained as the result of a deeper need for something far more important. The desire to eat to excess could be caused by boredom, emotional distress, or a fear of being without. The desire to over-achieve could be a reaction to feeling “less than” because of your sexuality/family relationships/etc. In my case I believe my obsession with luxury items and working out are directly related to feeling second-best. Especially in the gay community, we all feel have felt intimidated by someone with a better build/income/lifestyle/ car/wardrobe… well, you get the picture. Furthermore, our culture allows for obsessing over people we find attractive. For example: I was sitting with some coupled friends in the park the other day and one of the coupled guys exclaimed “oh GAWD! Look at that runner. Look at that bulge! LAWD he’s so hot… I mean, the things I would DO!” … this went on for awhile and some awkward glances were exchanged between the rest of us; empathetic glances which affirmed that we have all had a boyfriend who’s done this before. Speaking from personal experience, it isn’t the simple

act of commenting on another attractive male that can hurt, but the often extreme – and graphic – nature of the commentary. I’ve discussed this subject with many people from a variety of different age groups and literally every one has referenced a past boyfriend or a time when their present partner would drool over other guys. They also unanimously admitted that these experiences did little to strengthen their bond and only made them feel bad about themselves. After some thought this led me to the obvious conclusion that these similar experiences and struggles are evidence of a greater problem: the collective gay culture leaves much to be desired when it comes to developing the skills, attentiveness, and sensitivity to cultivate a healthy and respectful relationship. We, as a community, have a tendency to only look at the most attractive, successful, and accomplished men… who (if you haven’t noticed) comprise a very small portion of our population. These guys weren’t always established – they were once young/students/skinny/fat/ etc., and while it’s great to celebrate the accomplished, our tendency to look for an “upgrade” or a “better model” is evidence of our insecurity about ourselves and may result in making our loved ones suffer. FENUXE.COM : 25

{ e a t s }

E

Unfortunately this can result in some serious distress, distrust, and insecurity on the other side of the relationship. As the person saying these things it’s important to realize the potential effects of your words and actions. If you’re the other half, however, it’s important to realize that your imperfection (and the imperfection of your inconsiderate boyfriend) can be a great thing. Although it’s contrary to

healthier/better built/more accomplished/more whole individual make us that much sexier. This is because it speaks to your willingness and capacity for change, adaptation, and ultimately – improvement. It shows that although things may not come easily to you, your ambition and drive is strong enough that you will eventually succeed

I argue that we should celebrate the flaw, rather than perfection. the culture we have grown up with, I believe that what makes people interesting, exciting, and admirable is their ability to overcome the challenges they face; their shortcomings, and the pain of past experiences.

So, the next time you begin questioning yourself, staring down other men, or craving those ‘soul foods’ - take a moment to ask why you might be feeling this way and be kind enough to forgive yourself – you’re only human… …but you’re beautiful, flaws & all.

BUDDHISM Although monastic followers are banned from all sexual activity, Buddhists do not place a sexual stigma on homosexuality. Rather, they stress that sensual enjoyment and desire in general is a hindrance to enlightenment. Most Buddhists are not working to reach enlightenment, however, and generally aim to lead a pleasant life and a pleasant rebirth after death. In fact – Buddhists don’t bar transsexual people from ordination and if an ordained person changes sexes they simply change orders! As well they generally practice yoga for meditative and introspective exercise. To you great Buddhists we say “namaste” (I bow to you)!

SPIRITUALITY & NATURE RELIGIONS Believing in an ultimate power that cannot be fathomed, practicing meditation, and using life experience and reflection to develop their spiritual connections, people who practice Spirituality often appreciate myths and practices of a multitude of religions. Also they frequently define themselves as “spiritual, but not religious”, and believe in the existence of different spiritual paths for everyone. Members of the Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta with whom we have spoken are more than welcoming, so be sure to check them out when you can – no matter your present practice.

Spiritual Living Center of Atlanta

Richard Rich Auditorium-Woodruff Arts Center 1280 Peachtree St | Atlanta, GA 30306 404.417.0008 SERVICES SUNDAYS AT 10 AND 11:30AM

Nature Religions (including Wicca, Druidism, Paganism, etc) are religious practices which consider nature to be the manifestation of divinity, sacredness, transcendence, or spiritual power. They cover a wide range of religious movements, groups, and social networks that may or may not have developed from ancient religious practices. Although there are groups of practitioners of these religions around Atlanta, there are also many solitary practitioners. As a result, we advise you to visit a great website called “The Witches’ Voice” which hosts a vast archive of information on groups, news, and information for contemporary pagans. If you feel the call of the wild, give one of these groups a try.

HOROSCOPES : 9/20 - 10/3 own the night

virgo [Aug. 23 to Sept. 22] Career opportunities and your potential to change jobs remain high. You’re busier than your usual “very busy” schedule and may be experiencing shifts in romance… take time to reflect on your feelings and sort them out.

libra [SEPT. 23 – OCT. 22] “Character is destiny”, dear Libra. Rid yourself of excess baggage at this time and reflect on the past. Surprising events may occur now promoting big changes in your life.

scorpio [OCT. 23 – NOV. 22] Stress and tension may be a little high at the end of this month, but your magnetic personality will help you remain pleasant. Avoid pushing and strong-arming near the end of the month and exercise patience!

SAGITTARIUS [Nov. 23 to Dec. 21] “Et tu, Brute?” Take a page from Julius Caesar and watch out for your “frenemies” – you are a prime target for betrayal at this time.

Capricorn [Dec. 22 to Jan. 19] You’re facing many obstacles, constraints, and challenges right now. Manage money wisely and face challenges head on. Avoid excesses and take care of yourself.

AQUARIUS [Jan. 20 – Feb. 18] Your particularly fantastic month is going swimmingly – especially on the 20th. However, don’t let your successes inflate your ego.

PISCES [Feb. 19 – Mar. 20] Travel plans or a vacation is particularly enticing right now, but financial worries may lead to some stress at the end of this month.

ARIES [MAR. 21 – APR. 19] You’ll be finishing up the end of the month with a bang – potential for surprises, advancements and relationships is high.

Taurus [Apr. 20 – May 20] The end of the month may bring some volatile days, but your emotional energy can be harnessed for great success in the workplace.

GemIni [May 21 – Jun. 22] Jupiter is keeping you in great spirits all month, but there is potential friendship drama between the 28th and 30th. Stay positive and keep looking forward.

CANCER [Jun. 21 – Jul. 22] You’re feeling more confident about life altogether this month. You have a stronger taste for risky sexuality, but also crave security and comfort. Take care with your actions and reactions this month and protect your relationships.

LEO [Jul. 23- Aug. 22] 60 : SEPTEMBER 20, 2012

Avoid the temptation to over-commit yourself to too much both socially and professionally this month. Although you’ve been particularly successful lately overworking might lead you to illness or fatigue. Take time to relax.
