INITIAL STEPS -Metric Survey - Layout Studies - Client Participation The beginning of the project is measuring the space and drawing a base plan. There were no original plans to this 1950’s apartment. The client was very participative and the layout evolved through my understanding her needs: separation of workspace from sleep/relax area; no TV; maximize shelf space and accommodate a dinning set she inherited. This public commission project rehabilitated this abandoned building into a modern police station and training center. Our office incumbency was the main pavilion (bellow in yellow). This section shows the extent of the historic construction and the new pavilions as well, like the Shooting Range (far right lower corner), developed by the partner office ‘Barrossi Nakamura e Arquitetos Associados’. A thorough historic background showed us that the building DE RESTAURAÇÃO DO COMPLEXO "QUARTEL DO TABATINGUERA" traced back toPROJETO theEXECUTIVO 1700 and had many different additions and uses during its life. LADEIRA DA MEMÓRIA: URBAN STRATIGRAPHY AND PRESERVATION (2018) Location: Ladeira da Memória, City center, São Paulo, SP - Brazil Individual Bachelor Thesis carried out fro August of 2017 to June 2018 Supervising Advisor: Professor Beatriz Mugayar Kühl Phd bmk@usp.br
In the the city center of São Paulo there is a granite obelisk measuring 8m high and a very faded inscription that brings about the year 1814. My graduation thesis is a research to investigate under which circumstances this urban historical site was formed, how it survived more than two centuries and what is happening to it now. Through exploring the existing elements and all the information available in iconographic and bibliographic archives available. I came as close as I could to an urban archeology research, compiling all the information in one place enabling a through analysis of the forsaken Ladeira da Memória (roughly translates as Memory Hill).

Maps from São Paulo State Archive
The bibliographic research included not only reuniting a nd articulating existing bibliographic references, but also analyzing primary sources such as the 19th century official letter State Archive; the Private Works construction permits from 1880-1920 in the Municipal Archives; and the scheduling processes in the preservation institutions. All these informations were cross referenced with photographic and map archives to trace the history of the site`s morphology and elements. The photos helped immensely with defining uses were they were impossible to trace otherwise. And the georeferenced basis provided by the Municipality facilitated analyzing the current urban space, which was key to establish mobility, institutional and other resources that might be factors to work with in proposing actions towards site’s preservation. This thesis was the basis for the article “Contradictions of the memory at “Ladeira da Memória”: urban stratigraphy and conservation challenges of São Paulo’s oldest monument” to be presented in the Bienalle di Restauro BRAU5 in April, 2021.

To consolidate the information and as an organizational tool I created 6 illustrations that divide the monument’s history into periods according to changes in its conformation, constructive elements, surroundings and uses. Three of these are shown here corresponding to: _1 pre 1810 period with the newly constructed bridge (1794) and surrounding farms; _2 around 1862 with the Obelisk (1814), water tank, some urban growth _3 the construction of the adjacent subway station (1982), massive urban growth and the current conformation of the obelisk into a public square (inaugurated in 1921). ORION_MULTIFUNCTION COMPLEX (2017) Location: Rua Behring, 145 - São Paulo, SP - Brazil Type of Project: Academic Team Project - Large scale landscaping and site adaptive renovation My Scope in Project: development of homeless transitory housing and landscape design Supervisor Information: rosanamiranda@usp.br Section A
Among a series of other possible abandoned areas to work with, we chose the ‘ORION’ site due to its size and its strong character. Originally an industry that processed cow horns into combs and buttons, it grew adding to the original brick buildings of the 1920’s. The bigger sheds built in the 60’s with open plans permitted us to perform an adaptive re-use turning them into social housing. This 14.000 sq meter site encompasses many social utility uses, as site bellow.

_GROUND FLOOR I was responsible for both the Transitory Housing for the homeless and the entire area’s landscape design. My research about homeless resocialization made me realize that the needs of this demographic are very complex and varied, which resulted in a very broad program of uses. In the render above (view B) we see the Transitory Housing on the right, next to the district office (left), some landscaping elements and a side exit. The Transitory Housing Plans on the right show how many uses this program encompasses.

_BASIC UNITS
These are special housing units. They cater to the best possible adaptation out of homelessness. That includes a private bathroom to encourage a hygiene routine, tall ceiling and broad circulation space to avoid the sensation of closed quarters.

View C _ Towards the Main Entrance The landscape design was challenging due to the sheer size of the area and the multitude of uses comprised in it. I chose a few elements to help articulate this enormous square harmoniously. Organic shaped grass patches mold the paved ways among the building whilst wooden shelters and log playgrounds punctuate the space. Next to the day care center (upper left side corner) there`s also a free-court (a space measuring up to a multi-sportive court, but without markings). A very special feature is a ‘ruin garden’ (upper right side): a playful take on the binomial of destruction and renovation, present and past. The garden is actually partially demolished parts of a small brick pavilion original to the site.

Location: Rua Major Diogo, 153 - São Paulo, SP - Brazil Type of Project: Academic Project Group: Fernanda Bittencourt, Giulia Patitucci and Luíza Nadalucci My Scope in Project: general design decisions and specifically structure solution development and project drawings Supervisor Information: Professor Antonio Carlos Barossi - barossi@barossi.net; Assistant Professor Silvio Oksman - silvio@oksman.com.br
This project was developed as a proposal of the subject “Design Subsdies and Investigative Subsidies for the Preservation of FAU-USP’s Built Heritage - AUI - 1601105”. An interdepartmental collaboration led by all three departments (Technical, History and Aesthetics and Project). The scope was the election of a site amongst the buildings owned by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU-USP). We, as a group, chose the Center for Cultural Preservation “Casa Dona Yaya”. This building has a long and complex history and today hopes to develop an ever growing part in the Cultural Life and Cultural Heritage Activities on its immediate and neighboring areas. Located in the founding district of São Paulo (1), the intervention site (2) was once a small rural property just outside São Paulo’s historic city center (3). The building underwent a series of expansions under different proprietors, as shown in the Building Chronology. Also, with continuous urbanization the estate’s lands were gradually sold off for private developments. In 1920 began the cycle of its last tenant. The medical tutors of Sebastiana de Melo Freire (aka Dona Yayá - 4 ) rented and later bought the Estate as an appropriate site for private hospice care and treatment of the young woman’s “paranoid schizophrenia”. On the event of her death, as per São Paulo Law, her estate was transferred to the University of São Paulo, due to her not having any next of kin. Today the building houses the Center for Cultural Preservation of the University of São Paulo, a Museum and research site of gender studies, mental illness and a Community Center.

The Exercise: Plan an Annex observing the discussion of theories for intervention in historical sites discussed in class. The Project directives included harmonious relation with the site and in this case the institution running at Casa de Dona Yayá had three main needs: an auditorium with minimum occupancy of 30 people; a small library space/ reading and Internet access room; a multi purpose classroom. Other than that, our function as investigators was to discover potentialities and problems on site that could be mitigated or solved by the Annex.

Invetigating the auxiliary Structure The prime site for intervention included an auxiliary structure that despite its age, does not display vital characteristics for the sites memory. Also the site presented a chronic problem of humidity (due to being the lowest point of the terrain) that disturbed it’s uses. Our decision was to parcially demolish the structure, making the soil around it permeable to soak all the water direct there, but leaving traces of the walls as contemporary “ruins”. The decision to demolish prompted the necessity of measuring, cataloging it, investigating and understanding its current uses. Visiting and talking to the users we identified two main current uses: _Break room for cleaning staff (need to add an adjoining bathroom) _Locker room for cleaning staff
