CONCEIÇÃO APARTMENT RENOVATION (2019) a 54sq meter apartment renovation on a building from the 1960’s, small scale renovation executive project, furniture design, interior design, group project with one more architect
The renovation evolves mainly around the passions of our client: books, plants and cooking. With this in mind we managed to circumscribe many perks in this one bedroom apartment. By demolishing the wall that enclosed the kitchen we created a more fluid interface between seating and dining areas. We used the structural wall as an accent wall and a space for hanging plants, as our client had requested. We also used the former space of the access door to the kitchen to house a double face cupboard/linen closet that serves both the kitchen and the living room. This cupboard/linen closet, having its upper quadrant being transparent, also helps to propagate luminosity amongst corridor and laundry room.
D
Our client wanted to use the living room as a workspace and leave the bedroom as bare as possible, reinforcing a separation between work and downtime. Thus the shelf space is concentrated on the southwest wall of the living room away from the afternoon sun (section AA). Sections BB and DD show the window from the laundry room peeking through the cupboard/linen closet, whilst Section CC shows the opening of the kitchen allowing the living room windows to shine through and the other face of the accent wall that integrates into the cupboard.

Ladeira da Memória: Urban Stratigraphy and Preservation (2018) Ladeira da Memória, São Paulo - SP graduation thesis on a historical site, iconographic and bibliographic research to explore and understand the formation and preservation of the site called Ladeira da Memória
In the the city center of São Paulo there is a granite obelisk measuring 8m high and a very faded inscription that brings about the year 1814. My graduation thesis is a quest to comprehend under what circumstances this urban historical site was formed, how it survived more than two centuries and what is happening with it now. Through exploring the existing elements and all the information available I came as close as I could to an urban archeology research, compiling all the information in one place enabling the remembrance of the abandoned and forsaken Ladeira da Memória (roughly translates as Memory Hill).
8m
To consolidate the information and as an organizational tool I created 6 illustrations that divide the monument’s history into periods according to changes in its conformation, surroundings and uses. Three of these are shown here corresponding to: pre 1810 period (1) with the newly constructed bridge (1794) and surrounding farms; first quarter of the XX Century (2) with the Obelisk, water tank, some urban growth and after 1982 (3) with the construction of the adjacent subway station, massive urban growth and the current conformation of the obelisk into a public square (1919). The thesis is available in Portuguese on issuu: https://issuu.com/fernandabittencourt93/docs/issuu

This public commission project rehabilitated this abandoned building into a modern police station and training center. Our office incumbency was the main pavilion (bellow in yellow). This section shows the extent of the construction with the new pavilions as well like the Shooting Range (far right lower corner), developed by the partner office ‘Barrossi Nakamura e Arquitetos Associados’. PROJETO EXECUTIVO DE RESTAURAÇÃO DO COMPLEXO "QUARTEL DO TABATINGUERA" A thorough historic background showed us that the building traced back to the D. PEDRO II - SÃO PAULO 1700 and hadPARQUE many different additions and uses during its life. The information obtained in theRUAhistoric research oriented us to a minimally invasive route, that FREDERICO ALVARENGA, S/Nº - CENTRO - SÃO PAULO/SP for instance meant modernizing the electrical system without embedding it in the walls or, more critically, establishing single standing new foundations for the fire ANTONIO CARLOS BAROSSI escapes (section on the left). OBSERVATORY HOUSES_Young Architects Competition (2017) Roccascalegna, Chieti, Italy historic site intervention, architecture competition developed at the HASAA office as a team project
The YAC proposal entailed a diffuse hotel with emphasis on the site’s innate quality for star gazing. Thus, we proposed a series of accommodations communicating with pathways to other uses. Balancing the soothing isolation of astronomical observation with the cozy countryside village in the Chieti region. The interaction with the castle was vital, but the castle itself should not be the target of major changes. Nonetheless new uses were to be installed.
My attribution on this competition was to design the intervention in the existing castle. A non-invasive approach was key in order to avoid any aggression towards the ancient structure. The new uses are independent structural modules. The library is a good example of the project’s principles: it creates an elevated surface that encompasses heating, electrical and electronic installations with minimal damage to the original flooring. The library table and reading space constitutes themselves as a maxi-furniture just resting on the old altar and the ancient stone floor.
ORION_MULTIFUNCTION COMPLEX (2017) São Paulo, SP - Brazil Large scale landscaping and site adaptive renovation, homeless transitory housing, academic team project 1
Among a series of other possible abandoned areas to work with, we chose the ‘ORION’ site due to its size and its strong character. Originally an industry that processed cow horns into combs and buttons, it grew adding to the original brick buildings of the 1920’s. The bigger sheds built in the 60’s with open plans permitted us to perform an adaptive re-use turning them into social housing. This 14.000 sq meter site encompasses many social utility uses, as site bellow. 1- transitory housing and social center for the homeless 2- district office 3-community school 4- subsidized restaurant 5-resident’s association 6- social housing 7-day care 8-mini museum and maintenance office

_GROUND FLOOR I was responsible for both the Transitory Housing for the homeless and the entire area’s landscape design. My research about homeless resocialization made me realize that the needs of this demographic are very complex and varied, which resulted in a very broad program of uses. In the render above (view B) we see the Transitory Housing on the right, next to the district office (left), some landscaping elements and a side exit. The Transitory Housing Plans on the right show how many uses this program encompasses.
houses the social center: documentation services, showers, lockers, veterinarian, psychological and health care, break room, library and laundry room.
_FIRST FLOOR
houses the restaurant, social areas, laundry rooms and 21 units
_SECOND FLOOR
houses several social areas, laundry rooms and 23 units
_BASIC UNITS
These are special housing units. They cater to the best possible adaptation out of homelessness. That includes a private bathroom to encourage a hygiene routine, tall ceiling and broad circulation space to avoid the sensation of closed quarters.

The landscape design was challenging due to the sheer size of the area and the multitude of uses comprised in it. I chose a few elements to help articulate this enormous square harmoniously. Organic shaped grass patches mold the paved ways among the building whilst wooden shelters and log playgrounds punctuate the space. Next to the day care center (upper left side corner) there`s also a free-court (a space measuring up to a multi-sportive court, but without markings). A very special feature is a ‘ruin garden’ (upper right side): a playful take on the binomial of destruction and renovation, present and past. The garden is actually partially demolished parts of a small brick pavilion original to the site.
KEULE RESIDENCE (2016) Naunhof, Saxony - Germany Adaptive reuse in historical site, solo basic project of residential annex to early 20th century Goldene Kugel Hotel This feasibility study and project draft objective was to convert 2 houses adjacent to the Hotel (yellow outline top right image) into a multi-familiar residence for the hotel proprietor and his family. The proposal of harmonious coexistence, transformed scattered volumes into a coherent piece that compliments the beautiful 1900’s Goldene Kugel Hotel. The Residential Annex comprises 4 separate units that commune onto a social patio with living room and dining hall (section CC). An aesthetic connection between both constructions is made by applying a color pallet derived from the exiting structure and interpretation of similar elements and rhythms. The brick arches are key compositional elements as their function is not just aesthetic, making the former bare facades dynamic but also functional. As a structural element the arches create sheltered entryways and balconies, enabling the view to the Biergarden (section CC). The were also used to create connections between the previously separate houses, integrating them with minor changes. Avoiding extensive demolitions and contributing to the project’s feasibility.

RESIDENTIAL GARDEN (2014) SĂŁo Paulo,SP- Brazil Small scale landscaping solo executive project and construction using recycled stone slabs and concrete benches molded on site
The photos (taken in 2018) show the vegetation’s progress and the additions made by the proprietor. The re-used stone slabs are in the western part of the garden. Some of them measure up to 2m x 1m and, as a quality material, it would be a waste to cast them away. The other pavements used are permeable concrete blocks in two shades of terracotta and concrete mixed with river stones. The modular concrete benches and counter were molded in loco using two wood plank molds.

Although this is a small scale garden with plenty of odd angles, it was possible to turn this seemly bad attributes into perks, creating separate ambiances and functions. The garden also has different light intakes which permits the presence of many different species, both native and exotic.
