53).' /52 +./7,%$'% &/2 4(% '2%!4%2 '//$ &5.#4)/.!, 4%84),%3 4(!4 7/2+ Prevention is better than cure. This maxim coined by the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460 –377 BC) is more relevant than ever in today’s world. In the healthcare sector, a welcoming atmosphere not only plays an important role in preventing health problems – it can even enhance the healing process. Création Baumann has developed fabrics for clinics, rehabilitation centres, care facilities, doctors’ surgeries and old people’s homes that satisfy the constantly rising demands for functionality without making any compromises in terms of textile design.

Good health is mankind’s most valuable asset. As our society undergoes demographic changes, we are faced with new and significant challenges when it comes to maintaining our health. The way we build the healthcare facilities of today and tomorrow is therefore becoming an increasingly important issue.

FORM AND FUNCTION AT THEIR VERY BEST: TEXTILES IN HEALING ARCHITECTURE Whether they are clinics, rehabilitation centres, care facilities, doctors’ surgeries or old people’s homes, the infrastructure of modern healthcare facilities needs to be based on the latest scientific knowledge just as much as the medical care provided. Changes are already underway: there is now an entire research area dedicated to investigating health-promoting construction – “healing architecture”.

The Swiss textile company Création Baumann has developed a wide range of functional textiles with healthcare specifically in mind. The fabric specialists have focused particularly on the positive, fresh and natural shape and colour schemes that are so important in healing architecture. The range of fabrics on offer covers all kinds of interior spaces, from patients’ rooms, recreation rooms and waiting rooms to dining rooms, cafeterias, reception areas and nursing care facilities. The materials leave nothing to be desired in terms of application either: they can be used as light shades, privacy screens, dividing curtains or furniture coverings.

ADVANCED TEXTILE DEVELOPMENT: INNOVATION AND INSPIRATION Création Baumann is constantly developing its healthcare collection. As a result, the UNIMENTO and BASIC IV UN fabrics, for example, both come with an antimicrobial finish as standard. This improves hygiene and prevents the build-up of odours. The antimicrobial finish can also be applied to most other materials from Création Baumann on request.

INTERVIEW WITH ANTJE SCHULZGEBEL, INTERIOR DESIGNER FOR THE VIVANTES KOMFORTKLINIK On the topic of the catchword “healing architecture”, can good design boost health? We measure the quality of design for healthcare facilities based on our knowledge of patients’ requirements and perceptions. These requirements vary considerably depending on the patients’ condition, so the design varies too. Designers who also have a strong affinity with welfare and healing can only develop the right concept in close consultation with doctors and care professionals. What role do textiles play in healing architecture? We know that people who are ill, in particular, associate warmth and privacy with textile materials through their sensitive, tactile experiences with them. Fabric-covered surfaces improve the acoustics within a room and convey a sense of discretion at the same time. You have designed interiors for places such as the Vivantes Komfortklinik. What did you particularly focus on in this case? The interdisciplinary nature of the clinic made it difficult to pinpoint the greatest common factor in terms of patient needs. We felt it was important to create a sense of order in the design of the space and thus create clarity to help patients find their way around. We can avoid any unnecessary visual stimuli by keeping contrasts to a minimum. Our aim was to incorporate technical medical components into the interior design in an inconspicuous way while also ensuring that they are intuitive to use.

The aim of healing architecture is to avoid attributes that have a negative impact on health. Technical equipment, for example, should be integrated as unobtrusively as possible into the surrounding environment as its presence can make people with health problems anxious. Interiors should be designed to enhance people’s sense of wellbeing wherever possible. Fabrics play two key roles in this respect: as functional textiles they fulfil important practical requirements and as design elements they are effective in creating a cheerful atmosphere.
