the festival presents artistic expression from the Nordic countries, but is primarily a meeting place for artists from all over the world. Here they can come together to exchange ideas and to make an impression on audiences. The Bergen International Festival’s Diamond Jubilee programme contains numerous exciting encounters. In 2012 we aim to emphasise how the local, the national and the international are connected by highlighting the extensive European collaboration of Nordic artists. In Bergen we will present the international projects of some of Norway’s most highly profiled musicians and stage artists with the festivals or institutions for which they work. For instance, the conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen will give concerts with NDR Radiophilharmonie and the pianist Leif Ove Andsnes brings the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

Opera director Stefan Herheim presents his performance of Xerxes from the Komische Oper in Berlin, and the Danish/Norwegian artistic duo Elmgreen & Dragset stage their play Happy Days in the Art World, a new production in collaboration with the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. Last year we entered into a long-term collaboration with the music education programme El Sistema in Venezuela, and this year we are proud to be able to present a bi-national orchestra with Norwegian and Venezuelan musicians sitting side by side. The brass ensemble of El Sistema also visits the festival to share a concert with the Norwegian National Brass Band. At this Diamond Jubilee it is a youthful 60-year-old that wishes you welcome, hoping to thrill and inspire everyone in the audience.

high-level politics. Instead we are presented with a typical baroque love drama, with a small twist. Stefan Herheim’s productions have been well received by both audiences and critics. “He is successful in making the innermost nerve threads of the baroque opera come alive”, wrote the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter about Herheim’s production of the Handel opera Julius Cæsar. Xerxes is performed in German and Italian, with surtitles in English and Norwegian.

In the course of the next three years the celebrated Norwegian pianist will perform and record all of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. This ensemble comprises some forty top-rate musicians from twenty countries, and was established by the conductor Claudio Abbado and the musicians themselves. The project, entitled Beethoven – a journey, starts with the presentation of Concertos 1 and 3 at the 2012 Bergen International Festival. Leif Ove Andsnes and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra will subsequently tour widely in North America, Europe and Asia with the Beethoven cycle.

the venezuelan brass Ensemble plays a combination of classical works and South American repertoire, and does so with a swing that makes it difficult for audiences to sit still. Many of the 43 members of the ensemble come from the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra, one of the best known orchestras to emerge from El Sistema, Venezuela’s unique music education programme for young persons. The Venezuelan Brass Ensemble, whose performance venues include the BBC Proms and the Salzburg Festival, has been received enthusiastically by full houses worldwide. wegian National Brass Band, which consists of some thirty musicians aged between 18 and 25, selected from wind bands and music colleges throughout the country. The band has performed at Olavsfestdagene and a festival concert in Stavanger, and has been on tour to South Africa. ‘For the Norwegian National Brass Band it is an honour and an artistic stimulus to meet the legendary Venezuelan Brass Ensemble. El Sistema is a model for anyone who works with music education of young persons,’ says Berit Handegard, national producer with the Norwegian Band Federation.

Tchaikovsky is known as a master of melody, and his works are among the most performed classical music.

in the course of two evenings in Grieghallen the conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen and NDR Radiophilharmonie dive deep into Tchaikovsky’s works. At these two concerts they perform the composer’s three last symphonies, the Rococo Variations and the D major Violin Concerto. Soloists are the Grammy-winning cellist Truls Mørk and the French violinist Renaud Capuçon. ‘Tchaikovsky’s last symphonies are amongst the most personal of all Romantic symphonies. I want to dive into the subjective content of the music and bring out what is irrational in

Eivind Gullberg Jensen and the German Radio Orchestra delighted critics when they visited the Bergen International Festival in 2010: ‘His facial expression and stage presence are full of energy and dramaturgical awareness … the youthful freshness and charm of this man from Stord combined with his technical elegance as a conductor has a highly infectious effect on the orchestra,’ wrote a Bergen newspaper.

the 2012 Bergen International Festival is the sixtieth of its kind, and we could not celebrate this Diamond Jubilee without one of the festival’s oldest and most important partners, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. The evening will be spent in Edvard Grieg’s universe, with works that more than any other Norwegian music still captivate people worldwide. The concert opens with Grieg’s A minor Concerto, which has been a signature work for the festival since its inception in 1953. The concerto is followed by excerpts from Peer Gynt, performed by top-rate artists: Emil Johnsen, Randi Stene, Lisa Larsson and Kari Simonsen. The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra received glowing reviews for its CD series of Edvard Grieg’s orchestral music. Grieg himself was for a period the principal conductor of the orchestra, which is one of the oldest in the world.

El Sistema and young Norwegian musicians

Orchestra NoVe 160 young musicians from Norway and Venezuela form a new symphony orchestra.

the caracas symphony Youth Orchestra raised the roof at the 2011 Bergen International Festival. It is one of several orchestras to have emerged from El Sistema, the programme which provides music tuition free of charge to several hundred thousand children in Venezuela. The visit to Bergen heralded the start of a long-term collaboration between Venezuela and Norway. One result is Orchestra NoVe, a bi-national orchestra consisting of 160 musicians from the two countries. The Norwegian contingent consists of young professional musicians and aspiring talent from the Norwegian Academy of Music and the Barratt Due Institute of Music. The

In Bergen they present a concert version of the work. Berlioz has been called the wizard of orchestration. In Grieghallen the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra led by Sir Andrew Davis will present the finest nuances of the work.

in the performance of Happy Days in the Art World, the internationally well-known contemporary artists Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset are portrayed by actors. The play looks at the challenges inherent in close collaboration and the phenomena of artist’s block and career panic, and expounds the duo’s witty and perceptive view of contemporary art. Elmgreen and Dragset are also responsible for the set design. Michael Elmgreen from Denmark and Ingar Dragset from Norway have worked together since 1995. For the Venice Biennale three years ago the duo curated the exhibitions in the

neighbouring Danish and Nordic Pavilions, and in 2008 they staged an animated version of the opera L’amour de loin by Kaija Saariaho. In Happy Days in the Art World they present a performance that looks under the covers of contemporary art, with clear reference to Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days and Waiting for Godot. It premiered in New York in November, and the Bergen International Festival will be the world premiere of the Nordic version. Happy Days in the Art World will be performed in Norwegian and Danish with English titles. Meet the artists after the performance on Friday 25 May.

Peer Gynt

A controversial, vital, nightmarish version of one of the world’s most performed plays.

this version of Peer Gynt is subtitled ‘A disturbing odyssey into the heart of darkness’. This central part of theatrical history is shown from a completely new angle – you can expect to see a quilted anorak, a shell suit and line dancing. ‘When Ibsen was interred, someone should have had the presence of mind to place the coffin in a kind of rotating mount. It would have made it easier for him to turn in his grave’, suggested a reader in a Stavanger newspaper. the play relevant to us today – in a highly surprising and successful way. ‘What does it mean to be oneself?’ asks Peer, confronting us with the most difficult question in the world. Peer’s wild, exciting journey around the world is also a desperate journey into Peer’s own interior. He tries to find himself, but gets lost in the labyrinths of his mind. berthold brecht described his writings on ‘the Egotist Johann Fatzer’ as among the finest he created, but the play remains unfinished. Director Tore Vagn Lid has done something about that. Brecht left five hundred pages of stage directions, a commenting chorus and texts about how the quest for individual gratification is a threat to collaboration and solidarity. The setting for the Fatzer story, or rather stories, is the end of World War I. Led by the charismatic Johann Fatzer a group of soldiers has deserted from the desperately losing front line. From their cramped hideout the outlaw soldiers await a revolution – which never arrives. The wait becomes a struggle for life. ‘This is one of Brecht’s most

brutal and potent sketches, created in a time of existential transition, between political commitment and individual self-realisation, between gratification and responsibility and between sexuality and solidarity. Brecht’s play may also be used to diagnose the front lines at the close of the postmodern era’, claims Tore Vagn Lid. Tore Vagn Lid’s performance of Brecht’s The Measures Taken (Die Maßnahme) for the 2008 Bergen International Festival enjoyed international attention. He has also directed several other performances for the Bergen International Festival and for Norwegian institutional theatres. The performance is titled in English.

jeppe is just a poor peasant farmer. In his words and John Lennon’s, a ‘working-class hero’. Bullied both by his wife and by the count’s bailiff. She sends Jeppe out to buy soap so she can sleep with the butcher. Jeppe spends the money on drink and passes out. He wakes up somewhere else, clothed in a tailored suit. Is this heaven? Or has he been waylaid? Stockholm Stadsteater’s version of Ludvig Holberg’s classic play is set in a Nordic winter landscape in the shadow of the welfare state. The Loneliness Trilogy six actors from Cuba move into three apartments on the Bergen slopes and fill them with Fosse’s universe. They call the project the ‘Loneliness Trilogy’. Young directors living in Cuba have fallen for Fosse, and have over the past year presented several of his plays in their home country. The trilogy shown during the Bergen International Festival consists of Someone is Going to Come, The Name and Death Variations. The scene is set in ordinary

apartments, and the audience is both guest and gatecrasher. The plays may all be seen consecutively in one evening, but it is also possible to choose one or two. The trilogy was first performed during the Havana Theatre Festival in autumn 2011. ‘The fact that three young Cuban directors choose to work on my scripts naturally makes an impression and pleases me’, says Jon Fosse. The Apology of Socrates with Toralv Maurstad socrates challenged established authorities and was sentenced to death. The trial is considered the world’s first miscarriage of justice. In the spring of 399 BC Socrates, aged 70, was on trial in Athens, accused of blasphemy and corrupting young persons. The jury consisted of 501 citizens selected by lot, and Socrates led his own defence. The speech he made in his defence, notated by Plato, is a legendary manifesto and masterpiece of rhetoric that to this day highlights important political and moral issues.

Socrates was found guilty and emptied the poisoned chalice. For him it was unthinkable to live without continuing his search for the truth. He did not fear death. Toralv Maurstad, a legend of the Norwegian theatre, appeared at the Bergen International Festival for the first time in the late 1950s, and may now be seen at Logen Theatre as the philosopher with a death sentence. The concept of ethnoporn has been adopted in Sweden in recent years as immigration has increased. The play of the same name by America Vera-Zavalas, activist, commentator and politician, is a modern story written as a monologue. It has become a groundbreaking drama about everything from sexuality to terrorism, touching on forbidden thoughts and topics. It attacks the concept of multi-culture and is a corrective to people who think they know what it means. The performance will not be titled.

Truls Mørk has invited Khatia Buniatishvili and Marianne Thorsen to join him for his two concerts in Håkonshallen. Together they present the most emotional and most dramatic Russian chamber music.

the first soirée features Rachmaninov’s and Shostakovich’s cello sonatas from 1901 and 1934 respectively. Both works are rooted in the Russian tradition melodically and harmonically, but while Rachmaninov’s work is still in the pre-revolution, pre-world war late Romantic style, Shostakovich’s bears the signs of the almost inhuman conditions he experienced under Stalin. The cellist Truls Mørk impressed audiences and critics alike in last year’s Bergen International Festival, and went on to win the Critics’ Prize for 2011–12. He has also received many other awards, including a

Grammy. In the first concert he performs alongside the Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, who made her debut at the BBC Proms and the Bergen International Festival in 2011. The second soirée presents two of the most powerful piano trios ever composed, written by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. To complete the trio Mørk and Buniatishvili are joined by the Norwegian violinist Marianne Thorsen, who in addition to leading the Nash Ensemble in the UK is active as a soloist in Norway and abroad.

per nørgård, born 1932, who has written over 300 works – symphonies, chamber music, choral music, opera, electronic music and film music – is considered an example and inspiration for an entire generation of Danish composers. He is the central figure in these two Bergen International Festival concerts. a major part of this concert is devoted to Edvard Grieg. Trine Wilsberg Lund has chosen songs in which he sets music to texts by great lyricists: Ibsen, Goethe and Hans Christian Andersen. This somewhat continental Grieg makes an exciting complement to the music before the interval – Finnish and Swedish songs from the generation after Grieg. Sibelius, Stenhammar and Alfvén were all great orchestral composers looking for a Nordic sound, and the sound they found for the orchestra is reflected in the smaller format of voice and piano.

Trine Wilsberg Lund from Oslo, who has been a member of the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera, has been involved in numerous recordings, most recently as the soloist in four Schubert Masses with the Leipzig Chamber Orchestra conducted by Morten Schuldt-Jensen. She is joined by the British pianist Alexander Soddy, who in addition to working as a repetiteur for operatic companies and accompanying in prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall has recently received acclaim as a conductor.

In Håkonshallen the vocal ensemble will perform Claudio Monteverdi’s complete third book of madrigals and madrigals by the French-Flemish composer Giaches de Wert. Monteverdi’s Third Book of Madrigals, published in Venice in 1592, was his first major success. It sold so well that it was reprinted five times in ten years. tan longjian’s quartet has specialised in traditional Chinese music, which it strives to perform using the same techniques and interpretations as in olden days. Their Håkonshallen performance includes five pieces for stringed instruments notated by a Mongolian intellectual during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). The leader of the quartet has received this heritage from the great-great-greatgrandson of the Qing emperor Daoguang, who was born in Prince Gong’s Palace in Beijing. Guqin is one of the oldest Chinese stringed instruments, dating from over three thousand years ago. The design of the

instrument, a kind of zither, involves many symbols and guqin music was seen as an expression of harmony between humankind and nature. Being able to play the guqin was one of the Four Arts expected of an enlightened person. There are not many people left who can play the instrument, and professor Li Xiangting is considered the foremost of these. In the second part of the concert he demonstrates why this instrument holds such a prominent position in Chinese culture.

It is this loss that is so masterfully expressed in these works. The Danish curators Anna Berit Asp Christensen and Bent Sørensen join forces with the contemporary music ensemble Scenatet to create intimate house concerts in which the music combines with fragments of lived lives. They have previously invaded artists’ homes in Copenhagen. Two completely new operatic miniatures have been created for the concert installations in Bergen. Home of Edvard Grieg ‘Every single day I take the train to the villa and back. All my ideas get used up there, masses of unborn works are devoured by the soil. When you eventually come to visit, you will only need to dig and Norwegian choirs, orchestras and piano works will come flowing up from the ground.’ Edvard Grieg wrote this to his publisher in Leipzig during the construction of

Troldhaugen in 1885. What was originally conceived as a ‘simple Norwegian farmhouse’ for him and his wife Nina was to turn out as a highly distinctive, richly decorated villa. Grieg wanted this to be a meeting place for his European artist friends, but he received visitors less frequently than he would have liked. At the same time Troldhaugen and its beautiful natural surroundings had already found a place on the sightseeing

list of art-loving tourists. Grieg later built a composing hut at the water’s edge in order to have peace and quiet when he composed. During the Bergen International Festival intimate recitals are held in Grieg’s sitting room.

ragnhild hemsing (born 1988) made her debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of thirteen. Her performances include the Nobel Concert and Spellemannsprisen (the Norwegian Grammy Prize), and in autumn 2011 she released her first solo CD with works by Edvard Grieg, Lasse Thoresen and others.

christian ihle hadland (born 1983) has been a guest at the Bergen International Festival every year since 2004. Last year he was the first Norwegian soloist to be included in the BBC’s prestigious New Generation Artists programme. He will also be the soloist in Grieg’s A minor Piano Concerto in Grieghallen in the 2012 festival.

Winner of the Nor wegian Soloist Prize

ksenija sidorova, born in 1988 in Latvia, is quite a rarity: a classical accordionist. According to a critic she makes ‘this big, unwieldy instrument seem as light and fleet as a dancer’. She performs works from the classical repertoire alongside works written especially for the accordion.

the norwegian soloist Prize is awarded for the seventh time during the 2012 Bergen International Festival, going to the winner of the solo competition Virtuos. The winner will also represent Norway in the EBU Young Musician of the Year Competition in May. Virtuos is broadcast on Norwegian national radio and television.

The homes of Ole Bull If you have heard of the violin virtuoso Ole Bull, you have probably heard tales of women fainting, Bull soap, his stint as the manager of the Manhattan opera or Oleana, his colony project. As a superstar of his time he drew audiences in their thousands to outdoor concerts in Paris and on his tours in the USA. Occasionally he relaxed at home at

Valestrand near Bergen. Later in his life Lysøen was the place where he took a breather from his hectic life. During the Bergen International Festival you have the opportunity to acquaint yourself with the two buildings that in many ways sum up Ole Bull’s eventful life. The house at Lysøen, with its Russian minarets, Moorish columns and Nordic traditional wood-carvings, was built for Ole Bull’s

second wife. He is said to have been obliged to buy the idyllic island because it was unthinkable for a sixty-year-old to take his twenty-year-old bride to his family home at Valestrand. And just like Ole Bull the talent scout, we invite musicians and audiences to take a weekend trip into the countryside.

ole bull concerts with Arve Tellefsen and Håvard Gimse have become a popular Bergen International Festival tradition. The ‘Ole Bull of our time’ presents the nineteenth century violinist-composer in words and music.

knut hamre and Benedicte Maurseth have commissioned composer-fiddler Nils Økland to write the work 5736 for old Hardanger fiddles alongside other instruments from the same era. Come and hear the oldest extant Norwegian-built violin too. It was made by Trond Botnen in 1746.

MARIANNE HEIER FESTIVAL EXHIBITION 2012 marianne heier (born 1969) is the 2012 Festival Exhibitor. The Festival Exhibition has been produced in Bergen Kunsthall since 1953, annually highlighting a contemporary Norwegian artist. The exhibition is well established as one of Norway’s foremost individual expositions.

GIFT TABLE – The people’s gifts to Haakon and Maud in 1905–06 the new royal couple was highly appreciated. Both for the queen’s birthday in 1905 and for the coronation in 1906 many gifts were the result of public collections, not only in Norway but also in England, Scotland and Denmark. The exhibition, which displays magnificent silverware, terrines, candelabras and pictorial art, is part of the government’s gift celebrating the 75th birthdays of King Harald and Queen Sonja in 2012. The gift in its entirety consists of six exhibitions based on a selection from the royal collection.

54 Programme Bergen International Festival 2012

The Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation was established in 2009 in honour of Kristian Gerhard Jebsen and his contribution to Norwegian and international shipping and business. A common denominator for the foundation’s engagement is a vision of contributing to the realisation of projects on the highest international level. Having previously directed our support towards medical and maritime research, we now also reach out to the arts, providing financial support for the Bergen International Festival, for Leif Ove Andsnes’s project Beethoven – a Journey, and for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra as it approaches its 250th anniversary in 2015.

The Bergen International Festival is something we look forward to with delight and excitement every year. We think it is an important cultural event that opens the horizons of the city and challenges audiences.

The Grieg Foundation has given financial support to the Bergen International Festival for many years, with a total donation of 11 million kroner to date. In 2012 we directly support the festival’s collaboration with El Sistema from Venezuela and the establishment of the binational orchestra NoVe. This collaboration binds two worlds – Norway and Venezuela – together in a musical encounter. El Sistema develops talented young musicians, giving them opportunities for a better future. The Bergen International Festival is an important annual event for Bergen and the cultural activity of the city, and we are proud to be among its patrons.

The purpose of the Savings Bank Foundation DnB NOR is to perpetuate the saving bank tradition by contributing to worthy public causes. We donate to efforts that give pleasure to many. Through our subsidiary company Dextra Musica we purchase valuable stringed instruments, which we lend to Norwegian musicians. Our aim is for talented musicians to have the best possible tools to practise their art, affording us all maximum pleasure. In 2012 we support the festival’s collaboration with El Sistema from Venezuela and the formation of a bi-national orchestra. The project is a valuable contribution to lifting our own arts schools to greater heights in the years to come. We additionally support the Bergen International Festival’s young persons’ programme in the music pavilion.

Over the years we have invested many million kroner in the Bergen International Festival because we believe in the festival’s long-term international ambitions. Its international impact benefits everyone working in the arts throughout Norway. The festival’s investment in own productions is exciting, and we note with pleasure how it is making its mark in the arts throughout Europe.
