EDITORS ORS' NOTE

ABOUT THE COVER Bigger, better, and bolder the second time around. As most people say, everything is sweeter the second time around. I have to nod with the cliché. Named as the Features Editor of the FEU Advocate for two consecutive years, I have primarily thought that being in the same position twice will only drag me into a tedious and tiresome pit since I am only expected to execute just the same tasks over again. But then, I was choked by my own sentiments for I have proven myself wrong.

Time--it may be a n illusion but it sets the path a nd creates the outline of a travelling soul. Looking back into the past of the Green-a nd-Gold University, it is evident that cha nge continues to exist. Time passes by a nd we see improve ments not just in the University but also in its students which eventually affects the latter’s experiences while staying in the Ta maraws’ lair. As the ha nds of the clock tick, the structure of fixed past, immediate present, a nd open future gets carried forward in time.

In my second year as an Editorial Board member, the pressure keeps on boiling. More questioning eyes are staring sharply on how I perform. In the Filipino childhood game bahay-bahayan, children assume roles as husbands and wives. But what if the cast list is no longer dress-up-doll-players and water gun shooters? Some people find sheer happiness and plain love despite the absence of a ring, vows and veils or simply put, marriage. First of the many Every parent wants the best for his/her child, but at the end of the day, it is the soon-to-grow up child who would choose his/her future. Nicole (not her real name), a Tourism Management student of Far Eastern University, came home from abroad where her family established a business, and decided to stay in the Philippines to continue her studies for good. This is in turn, leaves her living in the Metro solitarily. As Nicole breathes the new environment, she admits that her boyfriend Bryan (not his real name) was the first person she got along with since her arrival from the airport. “Well kasi, galing akong abroad… Hanggang sa nasanay kaming lagi kaming magkasama pati pagtulog (I came from abroad… Here in the Philippines, I don’t have someone to live with. We were only sleeping together at first then we would go home, until we got so used to being together even when sleeping,” she narrated. With the ruling out of role playing in the ‘game of love’, decision arises, Nicole and Bryan decided to live under the same roof. But these young adults, now living as a real-life couple, knew from the start what they are casting themselves into. (Yes, we both know that it was wrong, but this is what we wanted. We wished that we were always together and pushed it, until it happened. Our parents then accepted it),” she shared. Without the existence of the holy matrimony, what Nicole and Bryan decided to pursue is something that society abhors. Exposition In a ‘bahay-bahayan’ everything sis about pleasure and enjoyment, but in adult relationships, up and downs, conflicts and clashes in situations are inevitable. “Number one worry mo pa, p’wede ka mabuntis kasi lagi kayo magkasama. Ayun ‘yung risk eh. Pero nasa tao naman ‘yan. ‘Di porke’t live-in, masasabi na ng iba, ay mabubuntis na ‘yan sooner or later. Nag-live in lang naman kami kasi d’un kami masaya. S’yempre, we love each other (My number one worry is getting pregnant because we’re always together. That’s the risk; but it really depends upon the person. Just because you live together, doesn’t others give the right to judge and say you’ll get pregnant sooner or later. We just lived together because it was where we drew our happiness from, because we loved each other),” Nicole added. Kasi, sinasabi nila , Well, on his side as well for his parents we’re questioning why we were living together. (Conflict rose when I began to question why we were living together. Our parents were asking why we are doing that),” Nicole admitted. Though the parent-issue has been present in the relationship, friends-issues stirred up as well. So kung wala isa sa amin, walang pupunta (For example, when I could not go out with my friends, unless we go together),” she furthered. The negative view from both parties that was pictured in the relationship is reasonably comparable to cat fights that arise from children who play the game of bahay-bahayan. These cat fights, no matter how little may either make or break the ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ scene – one may tighten the connection or loosen up the bond. “Happy” ending “Well, ‘di ko masasabi (I can’t tell), who knows? In the end kami pa rin pala (it will still be the both us). Pero (but) as of now, (this is) okay na ito, na (that we’re) good kami,” was Nicole’s last hit of optimism towards her unsuccessful yet heartfelt, and a year and a half long relationship with her former live-in partner, Bryan. After accepting the fact that “it’s over,” Nicole did not run out of positive atmosphere. She also disclosed that anticipating their future together was part of their plans as real-life partners and confessed that breaking up was nowhere to be felt at those moments they were together as a couple. I didn’t expect that we will break up because we know each other very well. We even know the things that our parents don’t know about us).” Like every seriously taken relationships, every little change is an adjustment after the never-thoughtof break up. “Sobrang malaking (It was really a big) adjustment. Una sa lahat, gigising ka sa umaga wala kang katabi, (First of all, you’ll wake up in the morning with no one beside you). You’re all alone. You sleep alone, you eat alone.” We just agreed to end our relationship. We are not kids anymore. Because even though it happened, there are still more good things that happened between us),” Nicole proudly shares with a smile on her face. Even though it is not the typical “happy ending,” Nicole found it by seeing her past relationship with Bryan as exceptional memories worth coming back to—a happy ending of her own. Entering in a not so childlike game called love, despite all the fairy-tale words of vows, the ring, symbol for eternity, and all sorts, at the end of the day, Nicole knew that tying her own knot is what matters most—finding bliss in her life with the mindfulness that she was once fond of combing dolls’ hair but she’s now doing it with her own crowning glory.

It is said that the higher being dwells in the ‘seventh heaven,’ term which also mean as an extreme state of happiness. But another seven counterparts the heaven; this time it is deadly, for it is the seven deadly sins: Lust, sloth, pride, envy, greed, wrath and gluttony. If God lives in seventh heaven, then who resides at the other far end? A random interview was conducted to some students of Far Eastern University and professional interview with Psychologist Jeanette Sabater to share the societal perspective, to see if a viewpoint gap exists between the young and ‘aged’ residents of the norm.

When boredom : meets erotic itch

Up and down. Left and right. Normal words that pollute the mind when someone plays the porn-button on. According to the MerriamWebster dictionary, pornography is the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement, but between the representatives of the youth and aged, is watching pornography a sinful act or a simple form of visual pleasure?

What college students says

“ confessed Seiji Vasquez, 3 year Psychology student.

Lazy song:

According to Sabater, “Pornography is the explicit portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal. It is made accessible even in the comforts of our home with the use of modern gadgets Pornography is harmful to our society for they see pornography as harm to our basic respect humanity. ”

Bruno Mars once sang, “Today I don’t feel like doing anything, I just wanna lay in my bed…” and just like a typical pop song, it immediately went all over the world hitting billions of teenage and feeling-teenage boys and girls. A study from the American Academy of Pediatrics tapped down that gadget appeal is one of the leading causes of the lacking of physical activity among youngsters which begs the question: To overindulge in an all-day gadget activity, is it all bad?

: Narcissistic virus

What the society sees

“Society does not view it as a hindrance because advantages outweigh the disadvantages. For the society, it is bad if overused, but as long as it is controlled then, using gadgets will be just fine.”

To be conceited is either positive or negative. If a self-inflated image blocks the whole view, then the negative pride is the one flying up-high. One dilemma, is when a person is taking too much of ‘selfies’ and posting them online, flaunting every single item and occasion in life.

“It is somewhat a form of improving self-esteem and building of self-image, but too much of everything is bad. That is why society becomes unease with some young people who overdo taking self-pictures, like posting irrelevant selfies loses the substance of online sharing.”

Gadgets make lives easier and for some, happier. But what if one does not have the capacity to avail expensive-high-technology Poison Envy: gadgets? Is it okay to push parents to buy such material?

“Students should understand that their parents are working for their studies and for important needs, not for buying expensive things, gadgets etc., students should be able to differentiate wants from needs.” Stood Kat Rosario, 3rd year Tourism Management student.

Fame whores:

“Forcing your parents to buy such pleasures despite financial insecurity is seen as a ‘brat’ attitude and somewhat enclosing in the Filipino concept of ‘pasikat’ where people would like to flaunt that they are in the trend.”

Greed does not only come in the form of money. It is always the excess of everything. And life, there are those who wants to be famous, already famous and still… wanting to be the fame-est?

According to 2nd year International Studies student “There is nothing wrong with wanting to be known for something, or Mark Reyes, “I think that society has no qualms with wanting to be popular. It is a common human dream to be unique and fame. It’s perfectly fine for me (that) everyone, not just known for oneself. If the person isn’t projecting himself in a humble manner, then it will be bashed but if not, then it will be widely accepted and people the youth, to elevate their own ego. ” will be fond of them.”

Anger games:

No, anger isn’t a trilogy but yes, it comes in many forms. Nowadays when infatuation explodes and two people in a relationship combusts in a passionate yet short-lived commitment, one way or another some falls in to the hands of Wrath, a deadly sin that when both are so mad at each other they tend to curse each other’s back. Forgetting their once love relationship and now remembering the hate part of the course. Ever had a friend like this?

According to Xela Leona Laqui, 3rd year Legal Management, “Relief sa amin ‘yun eh, sa aming mga nasa relationship after mag break-up kasi parang nawawala ‘yung sakit na naramdaman mo after niyong mag-break tapos nakakatulong siya kahit nakasasama. Nakakatulong para makapag-move on agad.”

: Food trippin’ 101

The bell rings and the stomach growls. Hunger is again activated in the system then there’s Mcdonalds, KFC, milk tea, siomai with rice, hilaw na mangga with bagoong roaming around the vicinity, can’t decide? Decided to eat every single thing despite fullness? Gluttony? Hmmm…

“The society takes it negatively when they see people who are excessively eating because they tend to forget what the reason of that person is into eating excessively. For example, a student did not pass subject, so she eats a lot of food to facilitate depression so I stsee that eating excessively as an outlet for depression,” said Carissa Canlas, 1 Year Medical technology student.

7 8

“It is perceived as absurd and it will be easy to say that the act is absurd, but people wouldn’t be able to understand and tell unless they’ve been in the relationship. The couple may have experienced abuse and many conflicts that contribute to their hateful break-up drama.”

“Gluttony isn’t a form of a healthy diet; people around us may see those who eat much as people who cannot hold back, therefore matakaw. ”

Nina Ma. Karlota S. Jamoralin at Daniel V. Miaga

SEPTEMBER By Angelica R. Porciuncula

Drama, thrill, romance and comedy intensify the FEU Auditorium as they perform. Warm applause and mixed reactions resound. Entertainment at its best, all eyes lead on to the stage as the set readies for the next act. A six-month preparation to be showcased in six performances with no cuts… is just raw action. The beauty of live shows is packaged in one bundle of unique experiences. Sweat and blood may pour but the Far Eastern University (FEU) Theater Guild (FTG), the official theater organization of FEU, always prepares for more.

Behind the scenes

FTG was established in 1934 by Sarah Joaquin in what was once the Cultural Center of The Philippines, now the FEU Auditorium. “Itong (This) Auditorium is really dedicated to the FEU Theater Guild because Sarah Joaquin noon (back then) is nagpe-perform sa (performing in) Azcarraga Street or Recto, tapos meron siyang grupo doon, then sabi ni Nicanor Reyes, ‘gagawa ako ng theater for your group’ (she has a group there, Nicanor Reyes said that he would make a theater for your group),” Dudz Teraña, FTG artistic director, said. Famous for making outstanding plays tackling young people’s issues, FTG brings students closer to reinventing themselves. Behind every scripts and scenes, the art of theater has always been alive in the land of the green-and-gold. “There has always been a theater scene in FEU. Theater has always been alive and there have been years, maybe even decades when theater was not as active but it was never removed from the FEU environment,” Martin Lopez, chairman of the President’s Committee on Culture, said. May it be a heart-wrenching drama or a fun-filled play, stage plays are fueled by students’ tastes and imagination to keep up with what is current and what needs attention in today’s society. “We want to educate our audience. We want to inspire them. We want to give them something that they can bring sa anumang field or anumang balakin nila sa buhay (into different fields or goals in their life). Learning is very important; we want to deliver a message. The main objective is to educate and entertain of course our audience,” Teraña expounded. The core purpose of each stage play is to enhance student’s participation and their ability to comprehend the moral of each story. Spectators are also open to come with feedbacks – may it be negative or positive. “The audiences were able to make those decisions and they are able to come to those decisions on their own. So slowly we are training their critical thinking, they are able to assess what makes one production better than the other;” Lopez stated. As FTG opens its curtains for a performance, an atmosphere of entertainment and knowledge is created. Scenes captivate the hearts of the viewers, they instill learning, but also leave a mark in the lives of the viewers with the stories they portrayed.

Viewer’s choice

The FEU community is the primary market of FTG plays and other cultural performances in the University. Striving to encourage everyone to participate, different impacts come about as one sits back and relax, unraveling the messages of the art shown before them. It instills so many things to the students like Usapang X, it exposed the students to moral issues, to sex, and the likes, issues that you should not avoid),” Bernadette Sandoval, 3rd year Biology student, said. At the end of a play, spectators have mixed reviews of how effectively the performerswere able to convey the message. Being able to bring the audiences into a differentworld is more than just uttering long linesand strutting best moves in the play. ‘Yung truthfulness n’ung character (I should be able to show the message of the character assigned to me, the character’s truthfulness),” Joseph Priolo, an FTG member, said. Every lineexpressed aims to target the feeling beyond one’s knowing. Each character creates an atmosphere that brings one’s soul deep into the story’s reality. A student’s insight is touched as the group flickers a tiny light from within its viewers. “Nakaka-connect ako sa FTG plays nila kasi karamihan ng show nila true-to-life story, may katatawanan, iyakan, lungkot, at saya na mararamdaman na talagang nangyayari sa totoong buhay (I am able with relate to FTG plays because it is mostly true to life stories, there’s laughter, sadness, and joy.) Makaka-relate ka kasi (You can relate) as a human being you can also feel what the director is trying to say,” Kristine Villanueva, 4th year Tourism Management student, said. Different impacts may come about but each story has affected an individual one way or another. An impact created by the character conveying the colors of the story into the viewer’s reception.

Theater art’s magic

A stage play can deliver different messages in a number of styles. A play’s title can indicate how stories are more likely to unfold. But hidden in these titles are messages thatwill bechanneled throughout thecurious mindsof itsaudiences – a message thatwill be instilled even afterastudent stepsoutof thevenue. Touching sensitivepartsand saying maliciouswords – thoseare just fewof the bold parts of FTG productions. The freedom of successfully staging a scene to catch the viewer’s attention beyond the norm is does not only fuel the hormones of young minds, butalsoenlightens them in adifferentway. “Even if you’re just sitting in theaudience there’s already so much that the Arts can do foryou, it can helpyou to be creative and it’s avery calming experience. Sometimes the production can make you squirm in your seats. You’re not comfortable but that’s why they stage it in such a way so that you can think about the situation. Why are you feeling uncomfortable? I think that’s probably one of the reasons why students come because they can watch things that are uncensored but then they learn from it also,” Lopez briefly stated. FEU has been uplifting the community’s awareness to awaken the once dead practice of watching plays. As spectators clap their hands and actors take their final bow, there is more to recognition thatwill be left in thestudents’ minds. “The Arts do not have to be only in the Auditorium, it can be everywhere and it is foreveryone. It isalso becausewewantpeople tocomeout moreuplifted, inspired and aware that there are so many different kinds of art they can get entertained and educated. Thefactthatitisfree, theypayforitsa (intheir)cultural feepero (but) theydon’thavetopay for itagain,” Lopez added. Throughout history, theater arts have its share of ups and downs. FTG’s play, for one, have numerous rising and falling actions that lead to the end of the story. Conflicts arose as viewers’ perception is twisted by their thoughts. But with the help of important characters uplifting the culture that once died, a resolution always awaits. And that is where F T G ’s curtain open.

Score time: Mostly B’s: The swagger-jagger Mostly C’s: Party Pop Mostly A’s: Good-old Classic Mostly D’s: The rebellious Rock Politically conservative, People who fall under this Hip-hop Contrary to the stereotypes category are born with a creative hand. They have enough doses of creativity and intelligence. New things or experiences are their usual cravings and they are quite confident of what they can give to the world. However, at times, blending with people is a struggle. This is why they are regarded as an introvert. They are a hunter for soothing and relaxing sounds. Also, they are characterized as reflexive and complex.

People who happen to stumble in this genre are synonymous to the word,“confidence”.And when the heavens showered the earth with energy, they carried with them huge buckets just to catch them all. They treat the outdoors as their playground and the ball as their best friend. Making people aware of their feelings is not a problem, for they usually release their emotions through movements. This kind of music lover is sociable or gregarious and liberal-minded.

upbeat, and conventional, are the three adjectives that best distinguish this kind of music enthusiasts. They share the same mastery of confidence with those in the energetic Hip-hop. They are also gifted with a helpful hand. However, they tend to go with the flow and follow trends instead of setting them. It is also said that Pop lovers are extraverted and, wait for it… Honest, hooray!

that Rock fans are aggressive and violent, researchers found that this kind of music lover tends to be gentler and calmer. Good-old Classic and rebellious Rock may differ from the delivery and mood of their song choices but they have a common denominator – they are both creative and intelligent. On the down side, they are introverts and they are most likely to suffer from low self-esteem. They are the type of always wanting to know “what is” and curiosity surely didn’t kill them. Talk about sports and adventure, they can be masters of both!

These results are formulated to four categories namely: Good-old Classic,The energetic Hip-hop, Party Pop, and The rebellious Rock, based on the research made by Jason Rentfrow and Sam Gosling entitled,“The Do-Re-Mi’s of Everyday life”.

-Frances Marie Tenerife at Joy Q. Batang

What if archaeologists unexpectedly swarm over the lively streets of Recto-Morayta and found out there is a time capsule buried underneath the paved grounds of Far Eastern University (FEU)? A container with the words of its founder, Dr. Nicanor Reyes, where he listed all his aspirations and desires for FEU in its 86th year. As the time capsule opens, a scrolled parchment gets unfolded. And as the scroll was read, the pressure all boils down to the inhabitants of our dear Alma Mater. What could the University founder be possibly saying?

“Students will be more free and lax (relaxed)… mas maluwag at open tayo to do anything we could do,” salaysay nito. Ito ay lalong napagtibay ng katagang binitiwan ng manunulat na si Gerald R. Ford, “History and experience tells us that moral progress comes not in comfortable and complacent times but out of trial and confusion.” “Kasi once na naging komportable ang tao sa isang bagay ng matagal.. they will unconsciously stretch that boundary which will eventually lead to something that would grow worse over time…to stop that from happening, kailangan din mag-adjust ng rules to fortify the growth of chaos,” dagdag nito.

“I think we have better students before... maybe because everything is already given to students [now]... if you want to learn, mamaya lang pwede mo na i-Google ‘yun e,” salaysay ni del Rosario. “Parang ngayon… it’s just normal (for students) to be dropping subjects,” ani del Rosario. “…We cannot cling on to the past, the past will not make us change if we hold on to it... your future, your goals, your dreams will direct your behavior, ‘yung past natin tapos na ‘yun eh. There will be so much things to do if we accept that there is so much the future has to offer,” saad nito.

Page 1 to 86 It all started out as a dream, born out of the founder’s head. Looking at FEU today, a lot has improved in its physical attributes. Higher buildings continue to be erected to cater more students. Moreover, enhanced facilities and equipment are provided to further hone their potential. “FEU has improved in terms of facilities; we used to have electric fans in the classroom, ngayon air-conditioned na. I like the idea of improving physical structures and facilities kasi kailangan ng estudyante ‘yun eh,” says Rosemarie Tiongson, Bachelor of Science in Education alumna of FEU and also a current professor in the University, as she reminisced her college days. After embarking on a massive expansion program of physical plant and facilities to accommodate its growing student population and to cope with the demands of modern, relevant education for a developing country, FEU also gears towards elevating the level of academic excellence by improving instruction. “A c a d e m i c c hanges, the focus on ensuring the teac her’s qualification is good. We have now in FEU what we call cluster head. Kasi, halimbawa, s a i s a n g department, isa lang ang chair, pag-i-oobserve niya lahat ng teachers, usually there are too many of us, it will be too tiring for him/her but with the cluster head, I welcome the evaluation of cluster head tsaka ng mga ano, kasi it challenges the teacher kasi ano, nagta-try siya na maging maayos ang kaniyang pagtuturo.” recall Edmund Ojimba, a professor in the Department of Communication for twenty years.

Since 1928 FEU has had a long and ric h history in education, culture, arts and sports and though it went through some drastic c hanges, several remnants of the past are still tangible and are carefully preser ved. “The consistency of FEU could be seen in its sports development programs, student leadership enhancement, topnotc h performance in licensure exams and competitions,” stirred Mark Pitoc, a graduate of and professor in FEU. As regards to athletics, if FEU had always been listed as the top-ranking University in Sports before, its athletes now still manage to surprise the nation by getting better eac h year. “Mas nakilala ang sports ngayon dahil mas mahuhusay ang mga athletes,” claimed Anne Therese Zynette Arong, a former member of the woman’s basketball team, batc h 2005. The tranquil atmosphere and the impressive 360-degree landscape framework within the green-and-gold campus is also commendable for it was preser ved for a long period of time despite the fumes whic h the city emits. “The environment of FEU, almost nothing c hanged in terms of the greenery and the art deco design/sculptures sa quadrangle, etc.” enthuses Damian Velasquez III, a product of FEU, batc h 1996. For the past years since its founding, FEU has produced so many people with stories of success in different fields of expertise whic h makes one exclaims: “I’m so proud that I am a Tamaraw and that my Alma Mater shines as the day goes by,” concluded Rabano. Hands of the clock have rotated, leaves have fallen and sprouted, hourglasses were tossed upside-down, calendar pages were flipped away, pages of the books were turned and here, FEU is standing still as the oasis of R ecto. The founder must have foreseen all these transformations and consistencies but unquestionably, FEU seems to have gone way beyond what he figured and expected. FEU rigidly thriving throughout the years despite series of occurrences, it didn’t falter, it managed to rise up on higher grounds whic h substantiate one rationale: FEU continues to fulfill the brand whic h the founder has left during his time, still imbued with the core values of Fortitude, Excellence, and Uprightness.

Even the enrollment process has been systematically improving through the years. Gone are the days when long queues and manual course registration existed. “From a horrible and indescribable system of enrollment to online enrollment which is highly convenient, it is a structural development that catches the eyes of enrollees alongside the advance and competitive method of teaching in FEU today,” expounded by an FEU alumna, Rosenie Rabano, BA Political Science batch 1989. From chalkboards to whiteboards. Poor-ventilated rooms to fully air-conditioned. Wooden sliding windows now turned to glass. From a small institution to a prominent university, FEU has proven to be true to its mission: to become “a university of choice i Asia.”

The ‘evil’ eye: looking through the daunting hollow By Lensey N. Etcubañas

Do ghosts really exist? A man is born with five senses: sound, touch, taste, smell, and sight. And within the four walls of Far Eastern University’s are people gifted with an ‘extra’ – an extra that gives them the power to peek into the holes of the spirits’ domain.

If their eyes can catch souls, their ears can hear what society thinks. (I know it’s hard for others to believe that ghosts exist because they don’t experience it. It’s a little annoying when you tell those stories and all they will say is, ‘it’s just your imagination!’),” Ocampo shared. Dreading verdicts are often the response to Ocampo’s and

Trick-or-truth Horror stories spread through wind and fly even across the walls, but how can one unbridle the mysteries behind such questionable existence of the haunted? Seymour Sanchez, an FEU Mass Communication professor, lives in the principle ‘seeing is believing.’ He said, “Hindi ako naniniwala sa third eye. Ang tingin ko baka psychological… baka ini-interpret nalang s’ya as existence [of ghosts] (I don’t believe in third eye. Although I have friends claiming they have one. Maybe this is because I don’t see ghosts. So I don’t believe what I don’t see… I think it has something to do with psychology… Maybe they just interpret it as existence of ghosts).” Shadows walking along narrow dark roads and feet-freezing dead woman looking through a mirror are all in the mind… or are they? Paranormal expert and founder of Mysterium Philippines Robert Rubin, justifies that there are spirits who refuse to leave the surface. He said, “Ghosts basically represent residual energy and emotion of a person who is left behind. Not all the time a person becomes a ghost, sometimes they just proceed on. In other cases, they linger behind because of numerous reasons.” However, in spite of such explanation and phenomenon experienced by an ‘evil’ eye, the route towards the discovery of its validity is still dark and blurry. According to FEU Psychology professor TJ Peralta, “There are things in life that are very mysterious, that Science has a hard time explaining… ESP is one of those because you cannot measure that scientifically… as of now.” Refusal to agree doesn’t guarantee a good night. Thus, when the moon takes over the sky and makes the room pitch-black, hold on to that blanket – make sure that closet is closed – someone… or maybe, ‘something’ is out there to get you.

Pajudpod’s unique ability, since, their heart-pounding testimonies on unearthly things are not enough to make others believe them. “Actually, parang nakaka-down kasi parang sinasabi nila na sinungaling ka (Actually, it’s a bit depressing because it’s like they’re saying that I’m a liar),” Pajudpod opened up. While others shut their minds in understanding what these third eye bearers have, there are also some who can fully accept their kind. “Seeing people with psychic abilities fascinates me. It is amazing how they are able to see things science can’t explain,” said Ann Marjorie Magpayo, a 3 rd year Psychology student. Humans are not the only dwellers in this material universe. Some have already felt and seen their invisible neighbors. Dale Asuncion, 3 rd year Hotel and Restaurant Management, agrees that ghosts do exist. “I do believe on that kind of ability… and while some believe that having a third eye is a burden, I believe it is a gift, a gift to communicate with the spirits, to understand what they want to say and help them find their way out to this physical world,” he said. May it be positive or negative; those scary judgments from the common people will not suffice to close the inner portals of the gifted.

Two naked eyes can describe how empty an abandoned house is. But someone will shout out of terror and shock when he sees what lies beyond – that one can never be alone in an empty house. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, Extrasensory Perception (ESP) involves awareness of information about events external to the self. These ‘external’ things were first encountered by Bronson Pajudpod, 4th year Mass Communication student, during his freshmen year in high school. “Nag-CR ako no’n. ‘Yung pinto namin, may life-sized mirror do’n.. Ang sama ng tingin n’ya sa’kin (I was in the comfort room. There was a life-sized mirror on the door… when I looked at it, someone was in the mirror when in fact, I was alone in the comfort room. He was staring back at me sternly,” Pajudpod narrated. It took several years for Pajudpod’s third eye to develop, unlike Alvin Dave Ocampo, a 4th year Tourism Management student, who was only four years old during his first encounter. “We were moving into our new house in Palmera. We were riding a truck, then suddenly, I saw a lady under a tree, and she was waving at me… She was wearing a long white dress with a long hair, and the face was blurry,” traced Ocampo. Since Pajudpod and Ocampo’s first encounter, they were not left alone by phantoms. Their gifted eyes didn’t escape the shadows wandering along hallways, rooms, and buildings. “Kitang-kita ‘yon ng mga first year college friends ko na sinapian ako sa bahay namin (My first year college friends saw it, I was possessed in our own house),” Pajudpod said. It was not only his eyes that were conquered, but his physical body, too, was owned by the spirits. Tapos takbo ako sa sala, do’n na ‘ko tumumba (There was an old Japanese man… I saw him running after me… It was as if he was tearing me apart to enter my body… I went to my mother’s room, I saw him there, too, and he was looking at me. I was on hysteria but he was just laughing at me. Then I ran to the living room, and there I fell on the ground),” he narrated. Person in the mirror, woman on a white dress, and lost souls pleading for help, are the typical companions of these sixth sense carriers. It may sound frightening or creepy for some, but it is the norm they consider as a part of their so-called reality.

Christmas is indeed the season of forgiving and forgetting. But to some Tamaraws, however, forgiving and forgetting will only happen after giving people what they deserve—sweet revenge wrapped in a box with a nice red ribbon on it. “Rosary and rosary guide. Para matuto naman siyang “It would be lots of candies. So all of his would hit him for all the things he does against me).” bitterness will be replaced by sweetness).” – Mary Rose Lirio, 3rd year BS Medical Technology – Lei Villa, 3rd yr BFA major in Advertising Arts "Pillow. Para ‘pag KO, derecho tulog na siya (So when we meet each other, I will give him a pillow then I’ll punch him. So when he gets knocked out, he goes to sleep straight ahead)." - Arres Dane Sese, 3rd Year BS Hotel and Restaurant Management.

“Just drinks. A bottle of champagne would do. We should just celebrate the happy moments. It's the best gift I could give to a friend. It would be a good time to talk about the negative vibes.” – Ehrran Montoya, 3rd year, BFA major in Advertising Arts "Salamin. Para tignan niya muna sarili niya bago niya ako awayin (A mirror. So he would see himself first before he fights me)." - Paul John Guzman, 3rd Year BS Hotel and Restaurant Management “Ballpen… Then ask her or him to write a letter why he or she hates me or why we became enemies so that we can understand each other. A pen is mightier than a sword, means that words can bring peace than actions.” – Vangelo Racela, 4th year BS Tourism Management Gifts do not always come from your family and friends, not even from Santa Claus. Because for these Tamaraws, giving people what they deserve weighs more. Indeed, if given the chance, who would not mind giving his enemy a kind of Christmas present that he truly deserves?

Paglalarawan pa niya, “Christmas caroling is the time of giving what you can and not what you should.”

In harmony with its 86th year, Far Eastern University (FEU) chose to celebrate with solemn vows and jeering shouts; a feast which stamped a feeling of pride in the heart of the Tamaraw community.

Quiet salute Dr. Nicanor Reyes Sr, founder of FEU, once said, “So let us all work together, keep faith together. And out of our common hardships and out of our common achievements, we shall build greatness and create loyalty for our alma mater.” Eyes closed all at once as our founder was remembered. He is the heart, he is the soul, and he is the spirit of the FEU community. Without this man, there wouldn’t have been any ‘Piyu’, ‘Tayuman’ and most of all, Tamaraws. As a sign of utmost respect and gratitude for pursuing the Morayta-based campus, a wreath-laying ceremony at the Founder’s marker was attended by University officials and some students who uttered silent prayers to officially start the Feast of the green and gold.

Shine of Shekinah No two persons are alike. At some point, people tend to be different from each other, in appearance, ways and language. But sometimes what binds everyone is the belief of the Divine Being. And in line with the Foundation feast, Korean tamaraws raised their cups, and showcased their culture on the FEU grandstand. From dances opening the heavens to playing traditional instruments, the crowd stayed under the charm of marvel and curiosity. “As a Tourism Management student, this event interested me because what we usually see in television in terms of culture is so limited. In Shekinah, we saw a different side aside from the K-pop part; here we saw dances that are considered religious. Using this as a part of the foundation week is really a twist,” shared the fascinated 3rd year student Kathleen Rosario.

Unconventional learning Another way of highlighting the Foundation celebration is not only through the usual rejoicing but also bringing twist in the academes. That is why the Alternative Classes were born, where students signed up for the topic of their choice under a speaker; this in turn will serve as the class attendance.

Although many complained regarding not being able to sign up in the student portal, students were still allowed entry to the classrooms where the AC’s were held. “The class we attended was fun, even though we were more than 60 inside the room, many still stayed despite the heat. We attended the graphology class and it was really full, but we learned so many things. I think it should be continued on for the next celebrations,” shared 3rd year Psychology student JC Victorino.

Praise to the workforce A university cannot stand without its staff. Just like a tree, it cannot grow without its root. The workforce equates to the root, without it, a campus would not have any life or any soul. That is why the University dedicated half a day to recognize the hardships and efforts of deserving faculty members for their loyalty and in service and for their excellence is teaching performance. The outstanding employees were awarded with trophies, merits, certificates and even cash incentives; and were even applauded by their colleagues which resounded throughout the FEU Auditorium last January 27,2014.

FEU Concert for a cause In the past, FEU ended the year with ‘Concierto Piyu’ where students experience rock-on concerts with celebrity guests serenading and crumping their way. But this year, the Green and Gold decided to bring the Tamaraw spirit in a whole new stage dubbed as FEU Concert 2014, A Show For a Cause: HIV Awareness and Prevention. The cause of the event centered on the rise against awareness and prevention of HIV or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndome (AIDS). The activity was led by the student leaders; they paraded themselves dressed with the illusion of nudity, covered by pieces of card board with a red ribbon, the symbol against the disease. The concert wrapped up the two-week celebration with a show that will be remembered not only for its bright lights and also for the awareness it had created.

For the record, mag-7 months na rin akong walang yosi.

Ni Charisse L. Vitto By Katrina C. Surla

It’s the time of the year when news feeds start to pop with the trendiest summer hashtags. Gearing up for the summer vacay, preppin’ up for the latest #OOTD that is in for the heat wave can all be found in one’s closet.

For a not-so summery vibe this summer, a plain white button-down sleeveless top with a patterned but violently mild leather shorts and killer heels is something one can opt for. Knee-high socks would also compliment the look as it gives a very unique get-up. Adding gold and metallic accessories to top it off creates balance suited for the tropic weather. Now, who says the typical black and white combination can be as boring as ever?

Summer and flowers always go hand in hand like any bread and butter good for a scorching hotness that greets from the sun in a summer morning. To keep the bloom from withering, make use of artificial flowers to flatter the look and make an instant connection with the atmosphere. To add, giving emphasis on bright colors might also make the outfit more alluring for the solstice season. For the flower crown: 1.Measure the head with a floral wire 2.After getting the measurement of the head, mount the size of the wire with the flower stem 3.Twine them together 4.Connect both ends and twine again 5.Seal the ends with a floral tape 6.Cover the spaces of the floral wire with the floral tape

Not because it is summer, the season will always require making the most out of the vibrant and neon colors stuck in the wardrobe. Brown and neutral colors will always be on top of trend. Brown-shaded color garments have this pull good for any occasion that’s why they can also create a suitable pair for the sunny time of the year. For flower cap: 1.Measure the length of the visor 2.Put mighty bond on the back part of the flowers 3.Attach each flower to the lace with a mighty bond 4.Arrange them according to preferred style 5.Place the arranged lace with flower on the visor

One can instantly transform an outfit in their wardrobe by adding a twist on a simple look and easily make a “lazy” outfit more prep py and interesting. But remember, the season’s trends are always in, but confi dence never wears out.
