BY THE SEA Living by the sea has a special mood and trends related to the ocean keep coming back. With focus on materials from nature driftwood is a perfect dĂŠcor material. Nothing beats nice walks by the sea in spring to collect treasures drifted to land from the fall storms. That has been hidden under ice and snow through a cold winter. Seashells and starfish are beautiful combined with fabric figures with mother of pearl buttons, pearls and sparkling sequins. In this chapter you will find ideas for dĂŠcor inspired by life at sea for the upcoming spring and summer.

SMALL WHALE

B

Small whale is too small to stuff between seams on the tail fin and flippers. Sew the seam that is marking the mouth by hand after stuffing the figure. Sew the whale the same way as large and medium whale, without the seams. Stuff the body lightly, and iron to flat out a little. Mark where that marks the mouth is supposed to be with a disappearing ink pen or similar, and sew the mouth by hand. Tighten by each stitch to make a curve inwards, see figure B. When the mouth is done, stuff the body a bit more to make it firmer. Attach the flippers as described in large and medium whale. The eyes on the small whale can be made with the Tilda eye tool or a small pin.

CEILING MOBILE A piece of driftwood from the beach, a few sea shells, starfish and a few small sewn whales can easily become e decorative ceiling mobile. Make two holes in the piece of driftwood to attach a hanger. Rope for the decorations can be attached on the backside with a stapler or similar. Attach the whales with basting stitches and seashells and starfish can be attached with craft glue or a glue gun. It is important to avoid elements that are too heavy.

JELLYFISH

Fabric

Lace, rope, fabric strips, buttons and pearls for decorations.

Wadding

Pattern is on page 41.

YOU WILL NEED

HOW TO MAKE Fold a piece of fabric that holds six times the width and twice the height, wrong side to wrong side. Cut a piece of wadding that is half the width and put it in between the layers of fabric. Place the templates against the folded edge, and trace the pattern six times close to each other. Cut out with seam allowance as shown in figure A. Sew the parts together as shown in figure B. Turn the jellyfish inside out to have the right side out. Fold a piece of fabric right side to right side and trace a circle equal to the large sea urchin on page 40. Sew all the way around, cut, make a reverse opening through one of the layers of fabric and reverse the circle. Stuff the circle firmly and attach it inside the jellyfish with basting stitches or a glue gun. Attach a piece of a rope or string as a hanger. Baste buttons and pearls by following the seams, this way you will get a star pattern. See picture to the left. Cut strips of fabric, rope and lace and baste them to the circle cushion inside the jellyfish as tentacles. Baste buttons and pearls to the tentacles if you wish.

SEA URCHINS

YOU WILL NEED

HOW TO MAKE

Embroidery yarn

At the pattern page there are patterns for both large and small sea urchin. Fold a piece of fabric right side to right side and trace a circle from the pattern. Leave a reverse opening in the seam. Cut out, reverse and iron the circle. Use enough wadding to make sure it’s round. Close the opening with basting stitches.

Wadding

Fabric

Doll needle Sequins or similar Pattern is on page 40.

Sew through the middle of the sea urchin with a doll needle and embroidery yarn. Let the yarn go around on the outside and put the needle in at the same spot. Tighten to make a dent. Begin with four rounds with equal distance in between, as shown in figure A. Continue with two rounds in each space, see figure B. Tighten the embroidery yarn after each round. Attach the embroidery yarn thoroughly at the end.

FISHER GIRL

YOU WILL NEED

HOW TO MAKE

Fabric for clothes and boots

Body:

Hair

Sew together a strip of skin fabric and a strip of the fabric for the boots. Fold the strip right side to right side, and trace two “legs with boots” from the pattern, so the border between the fabrics is approximately where it’s marked with a dotted line. Sew around the legs. Fold fabrics for body and arms right side to right side, trace the pattern and sew around. Cut out all parts.

Wadding

Fabric for skin

Knitted cardigan, see page 28. The flower in the hair is from Tilda paper assortment. Pattern is on page 34 and 35.

Use a flower stick or similar to help you reverse the parts inside out. To reverse the skinny legs and arms push the blunt end of the stick against the tip of the arm/leg, see figure A. Start close to the foot/ hand and drag the leg/arm down over the wooden stick, see figure B. Grab the foot/hand and pull at the same time as you hold at the bottom so the leg/ arm will be reversed, see figure C. Iron the parts, and iron the seam allowance inwards by the openings for body and arms. Stuff the body, legs and arms. Place the legs inside the body and attach with basting stitches. Baste the arms close to the body on each side, see figure D.

AT THE BEACH Many of us have spent summers at the beach and have endless memories. The countryside surrounding the sea is filled with lavish nature, with all kinds of insects and animals, sweet strawberries and treat yourself with an ice-lolly a day throughout the whole summer. Here are a few pages filled with sweet ideas inspired by holidays at the beach.

SUMMER SCARF

YOU WILL NEED

HOW TO MAKE

Flowers see page 26. You can use a brooch to attach the flower.

Scarf: The scarf is 180 cm long and 26 cm wide. If you use a fabric where the pattern has an obvious direction, or you have limited with fabrics, you should sew together two parts of 90 x 26 cm. The parts can then be sewn together so both parts have the pattern in the right direction by the ends when they hang down. The scarf is lined with another fabric, so you need an equal piece or pieces for lining. Add seam allowance to the measurements. Place lining and fabric right side to right side and sew around. Leave a reverse opening at the middle of the scarf. Reverse and iron the scarf, and close the reverse opening with stitches. Flounces: The scarf will look prettier with more flounces, but for many it's probably more than enough romance with one at each end of the scarf. Cut a piece of fabric to each of the flounces of approximately 18 x 55 cm, add seam allowance.

26

Various fabrics.

Fold and iron the seam allowance inwards on all sides and iron the flounces twice so it will be about 9 x 55 cm. Sew a seam to close each short end of the flounces. Sew with large stitches on a sewing machine or by hand along the open long side, and pucker the length of the flounces until it equals the width of the scarf. Continue with as many flounces as you wish.

SUMMER GIRLS Sew summer girls the same way as the fisher girl on page 14, but here you use "legs with shoes" on page 35 in the pattern. Sew skin fabric and shoe fabric together, fold right side to right side and trace the legs so the border between the skin and shoe is about where it's marked in the pattern. Reverse, iron, stuff and attach the legs as described on page 14. Cut a 14 mm wide strip of fabric, fold the edges inwards so it will be 5 mm wide. Attach the strip around the legs, approximately where it’s marked in the pattern, as a shoestring. Sew the dress as described on page 16. KNITTED CARDIGAN YOU WILL NEED: 20 to 25 g of wool yarn and needle number 3. Trunk: Cast on 48 stitches. Knit 2 needles of moss stitches (1 right side, 1 wrong side) for the edge at the bottom. Then knit 16 needles of stockinette stitches. On the 17th needle (wrong side) knit 11 stitches, cast off 4 (for the sleeve), knit 18, cast off 2 stitches in each side. Knit together:

sleeve, knit 18 stitches, knit in the other sleeve and knit the last 11 stitches. Knit a reverse needle. Round 2: The raglan cast starts this round. Knit 8 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 7 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 11 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 2 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit 7 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, knit the last 8 stitches. Knit a reverse needle. Round 3 and 4: Like round 2 (less stitches) Round 5: Like previous rounds by the sleeves, but because it’s only one stitch left between the casts on the sleeves, put 3 stitches together on top of each sleeve (instead of 2 times 2 together). Knit a reverse needle. Round 6: Cast off the first 3 stitches, knit the remaining and cast off the last 3 –this is to make a small neck circle. Knit a reverse needle. Round 7: Cast off the rest of the stitches (20). Attach the threads, sew the jacket together and damp it well. Use a thread of the jacket’s yarn and sew with basting stitches around the neck to be able to close the jacket by tying a bow.

Round 1: knit the first 11 stitches, knit in the first
