ORGANIC PRESTRESSING SYSTEM (OPS)
DIGITAL OTOSCOPE
Inspired by the way natural structures work (Biomimicry), specifically human muscle, the OPS System is a set of cables, hydraulic jacks, sensors and other components that are attached to self-launching gantries, compensating for the weight of the metallic structure. OPS enables the design of lighter and more slender structures with the same structural materials. This technology was developed at the Civil Eng. Department and formed the basis of a FEUP spin-off - BERD - created in 2006 - and has now been patented and applied in several countries.
Otitis is a common sickness on children that cause a major stress of parents. This device intends to help parents and doctors in the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of otitis in a more accurate manner, using color measuring technology. This technology was licensed to FEUP’ spin-off Metablue Solution, Lda.

WALKINSENSE
DYE-SENSITIZED SOLAR CELLS (DSC) Dye-sensitized Solar Cells developed at the Department of Chemical Engineering, in partnership with EFACEC, is a project based on the production of energy through photovoltaic panels, installed in the windows of buildings, with a unique configuration of double glazing. The project is aimed at developing a new sealing process which dramatically increases the longevity of solar cells as well as providing a more efficient and less expensive solution for collecting the energy produced by the cells.
WalkinSense is a unique device to monitor lower human limb movement, with a wide range of applications: orthopedics, neurology, cardiology and podiatry. The wireless information provided by WalkinSense, together with its simple installation and robustness, allows athletes to monitor and assess their exercise, preventing injuries. Developed by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, this project formed the basis of the FEUP spin-off Tomorrow Options.

R&D AND INNOVATION SUPPORT AND SERVICES
FEUP promotes the participation of its scientific community in projects, programmes and networks, as well as the development of knowledge production and its transfer to companies. It supports the protection of intellectual property and trade application, and the creation of technology-based companies. FEUP, through the Cooperation Office - R&D and Innovation, has a wide range of services provided to professors and researchers, but also for companies.
CONNECTION UNIVERSITY-INDUSTRY Promotes interactions between FEUP and companies/ institutions, ensuring not only an answer to immediate needs, but also a solid partnership with new types of cooperation, and support in the establishment of protocols for collaboration in R&D and Innovation. FEUP helps companies to secure financing opportunities for their R&D and Innovation activities, and encourages the establishment of partnerships with their scientific community, aiming to develop projects in consortium.
RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATION OF FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FEUP’s R&D and Innovation Office not only selects the most appropriate funding opportunities for FEUP’s scientific community, but also identifies funding alternatives for participation in scientific events; equipping laboratories with scientific equipment; PhD and Post-doctoral scholarships, among others. The R&D and Innovation Office is the interface between those responsible for making funding applications and the Offices for Financing Programmes.
PROMOTION OF R&D AND INNOVATION ACTIVITIES Disseminates R&D and Innovation activities at FEUP through the organization of events, identifying external research partners, and supporting the mobility of researchers in international cooperation activities.

EXPLOITATION AND VALUATION OF KNOWLEDGE PRODUCED AT FEUP Support is given for the development of activities to promote research and the protection of knowledge produced at FEUP, as well as for the promotion of outcomes resulting from the transfer of this knowledge to the wider public. The ongoing and extensive application of the scientific community’s skills (researchers, research units, associated laboratories, departments) and emerging technologies has two objectives: • technology-push approach: to inform companies of the knowledge produced at FEUP so they can incorporate it in their activities and innovation processes; • demand-pull approach: to provide an appropriate response to any research problems/needs and technological development that companies may have.
INNOVATION NETWORKS The promotion of innovations and entrepreneurship at FEUP is still visible through the international networks of which it is part, as is the case with the Business and Innovation Network (BIN@TM). The main aim of this networking platform it is to cultivate relations of trust and to develop international partnerships that foment the establishment of R&D consortia, the transfer of technology and the creation of technology-based companies.
